to win your case. Talking withthe Fresno eight women's basketball head coaches,
begin our Bulldog Basketball Hour at aCrow and Wolf that is jumping here tonight
on New Year's Week at Coach youguys are heading into conference play, but

(01:08):
let's take a look back to nonconference. How do you think the whole
month in November and most of Decemberwent well. I think we had a
really good schedule. I thought weplayed competitive teams, teams where we could
get most of our lineups in reallyget a good feel for different types of

(01:30):
play and how we would play againstit offensively and defensively. I'm excited.
I think we've played probably more peoplein our in our lineup than most years
with probably playing consistently nine people.Yep, it's been really good to get
you know, get a good rotation. So I'm excited about that. Excited

(01:52):
obviously about our new kids and themgetting their feet wet and getting rolling and
getting going. Uh. Glad thatto me is back in the lineup.
I mean, coming off of lastyear, I think she's really uh done,
done some good things at times, and really been obviously just working hard.
So I'm glad to see her backin the mix. Let's take a

(02:13):
look at it. One game thatwas honestly a cool game. You're part
of the Hall of Fame series, the Jerry Clangel Hall of Fame series,
where you guys took place your gamein Phoenix. You played at the Phoenix
Suns and Phoenix Mercury Arena Footprint Center. You had a big performance from MEA
Jacobs said Deathman as well. Youguys lost a close one at Arizona State.
But overall, what was that experiencelike for your girls? Yeah,
I mean it was. It wasa great venue obviously to play where the

(02:37):
Phoenix Suns play, and uh,just the We had a good crowd because
we played ASU obviously and then Arizonaplayed after, so we had all the
all the crowd. We also hada random crazy Bulldog fan with a with
a flag in the stands, andlots of parents came. So it was
it was a really good experience thatway. It's an easy trip down there.

(02:59):
Other than that, I just thoughtour kids really played hard. I
didn't think they were you know, they played without fear, you know,
just played really solid. I thoughtwe played solid the entire game. Didn't
really have a quarter where we droppedmuch, gave ourselves a chance to win.
Thought Mia was going to hit thatthat eight three point shot at the

(03:20):
end to put it to a onepoint game. But just proud of our
kids and how they played and playedthroughout the forty minutes. Talk about your
team a bit, because one thingthat your team has gotten this non conference
season is a lot of Mountain Westawards. You've got a couple of freshmen
that we're going to talk to thathave won three of the seven Freshmen of
the Week awards. And then Miawho we just talked about, who dropped
a thirty piece on Arizona State. She was the Mountain West Player of the

(03:44):
Week. So it sounds like you'rerecruiting and the incoming players you got and
they're not only joining the team, but they're doing well. Yeah, I'm
really excited about obviously, to havefreshmen do well, it's very encouraging as
a coach. You know that we'relooking at the right places and recruiting the
right types of kids. And inTasia and Kylie, who you'll hear from

(04:09):
later, they both have just workedreally hard. And it's it never fails.
We'll always have at least one freshmanthat plays and seems to do well.
But both these kids are not onlyunderstanding what we want, but playing
hard both ends of the floor defenseand offense. Tajea's handling the ball thirty

(04:30):
to thirty nine minutes a game.Kylie is able to score. Her defense,
she's getting stills. I mean, just very very solid for us and
really has helped us in all waysin all areas. So it's really great
to see them get rewarded in thatway. Mia Jacobs, I mean,
she's had some good games, she'shad some good weeks, but I think

(04:56):
she really put it all together againstASU. She was shooting really well.
Obviously she is seven for eleven fromthe three, and you know, scored
inside and out, and she cando that, so you really have to
guard her. And and then youhave Sid on the other side of that
game, and she was hitting threesand got a double double and I think

(05:18):
twenty two points. Is that whatSid happened? Yeah, And it's really
hard to guard both those kids alongwith Kylie who can shoot. And I
think one of the biggest differences thisyear is just our ability to shoot the
three consistently. We could shoot thethree last year, it wasn't always consistent.
This year, I felt like wecan really hang our hat on the

(05:39):
three point shot. Yeah, youguys are shooting in the mid thirty percentile
range, which is good. It'sone of the top in the Mountain West
Conference. Let's talk about a coupleof more newcomers. You guys have seven
newcomers on this team, and DeagenaHarvey is the one to talk about a
military she's active in the military. It's it's kind of funny. We were
flying the other day, and becauseshe's active in the military, she also

(05:59):
gets to the flights first. Youknow, so exactly, but she missed
a game earlier because the military responsibilities. Just talk about bringing Deageny Harvey onto
this team and then obviously beats Jataanother one in Maria Kay. Yeah.
Well, Deaga, who goes byjaw it's a lot easier to say,
is active National Guard in the Army, and she has certain certain duties that

(06:26):
she has to make sure she doesper year, and so if and she
can, she can put some onpause. Although those add up, and
so in the event where our calPoly game, uh, there was just
a situation where she had to doit, and you can only submit uh

(06:47):
for a pause, and then ifthey say no, you're going or you
get in bad standing. And soobviously we knew that before Jah got to
our team, and we told herwe would suppor order one hundred and ten
percent. She has committed to themas she has committed to us, and
I can't even explain. Hopefully we'llhave her on the show to explain what

(07:12):
she goes through when she does aweekend. I mean she'll do a weekend
or three days. She'll have toget certain assignments done and when she comes
back she's pretty tired, I couldimagine, and she has to go down
to San Diego. Oh wow.And so we're we're working through that.
But I mean, we're proud ofher, and she is very responsible and

(07:32):
mature in that she and also shehas to take care of her classes on
top of that. So there's alot of there's a long list for her,
but she is going to be betterfor it, and you know she's
making us better every day too.Talk to me about Beta Azata, another
newcomer for you guys, young ladyoriginally from Senegal, and she's been playing

(07:53):
more and getting more minutes from youas well. She's a nice addition to
helping the post with Sid and Mia. Well, she's so athletic, long
quick, she probably could be almosteverybody on the court and down and back
except for John. But she's she'sso physical I think she just has all
the pieces to be a great player. It's been a little bit of a
transition from junior college to where we'reat, but she's getting She's gotten better

(08:18):
every game. She is a fiercerebounder, and I think she prides herself
with that, so offensively and defensivelyshe is. She's quick to the ball,
She's quicker than most post players we'regoing to play in our league,
so I'm really excited to see howshe does against our conference. And she
can run the floor, she cansteal the ball, she can rip and

(08:41):
go from like a high post situation, so just pretty versatile. But again,
that transitions taken just a minute. But I was pleased with how she
played against you know, at ASU. And she's really come back this this
holiday season where there's not been schooland she's really done well in practice.

(09:03):
So I'm very hopeful moving forward.Yeah, she had a couple of those
nice moves against Arizona State, therip and go at the fell line where
she went right by the post playerand it talk to me about Maria Kay
played with Franka on the German nationalteam a couple of seasons ago. What
have you liked from her. Yeah, Maria is a little bit older too.
When we get international kids, usuallythey come a year later, and

(09:28):
with COVID we're even getting older thanthat. So Maria just turned twenty one
as a freshman, which is nicebecause again she also has a little bit
of the physicality and just a littlebit more of the savvy. She's been
playing with Franken on her national teamsand been playing you know over there,

(09:50):
you play with thirty year olds. You don't just play with twenty one year
olds or eighteen year olds. Soshe's come with a little bit experience.
I really think she has so muchpotential. She can she can score inside,
she has a nice little half book. She likes to go left.
She can face up, shoot themid range, shoot the shoot the three

(10:11):
pointer. She does have really goodface up actions and and again it's it
is a nice rotation with her sidyou know, benta and then maybe even
you throw me in there. Wehave a good post rotation. So that's
gonna be really once she gets transitionedin and and you know, gets her

(10:31):
feet wet, she's gonna be areally good addition to our program. Well,
that's helping you guys, rebounding becausewe were kind of talking about this
off the air. You're rebounding differential. You guys are a plus three plus
going into the games, which isI was trying to think. I don't
know the last time you guys havebeen that high up. Usually it's been
right around even or maybe one reboundbetter. But three rebounds plus, that's

(10:54):
that's a big strength for your team. I mean, you saw it against
Arizona State. How strong you guysare rebounding? Yeah, especially Sid has
really upped her rebound game a littlebit more. And then Mia Jacobs is
physical and strong inside. When sheis going for those rebounds, it's hard
to get out of her way likeI and obviously with Benta, but then

(11:18):
to Mia has added another element ofrebounding. She was a good rebounder as
a freshman. She's come back andreally, really I think she's thought through
her game and realize like that's anarea where she can be successful and if
she can slow it down, rememberto box out, make sure her hands
are up released to the ball likeshe's she's been been helping us in that

(11:41):
area too, especially on defensive reboundswhere she can box out. This is

(15:01):
hasn't come yet? Yeah, ohtex It's welcome Batitude Brown Wolf at five
twenty six Bruce Avenue in Clovis. It is the Bulldog Basketball Hour, presented
by Proper Defense Law and Matt Norpalong with Fresno State women's basketball coach Jamie
White and a couple of Mount Westfreshmen of the Week this season, Taja
Santa Maria, the Young Lady fromCanada, and Kylie Fox alongside. So

(15:22):
we can chat with both of youguys now after we've been talking to Coach
White, and I'm gonna ask bothof you guys this because your freshman really
something we ask everybody, but whatmade you choose coming to Fresno State?
Why did you want to come tobe a Bulldog? And we'll start with
Taja, the point guard for theDogs, the young lady from Canada.
Yeah, I took my visit reallyearly to Fresno, but I think one

(15:46):
thing that drew me was the relationshipsthat I built with the coaches and coming
and meet the team and seeing thekind of emphasis that there is on family
and culture here. That's something that'sreally important to me. And I think
being here, I've seen like inaction, So I think really just the
opportunity to play in a good conference, competitive conference, good basketball, and
then the family and the team aspectof it is really just all what I

(16:08):
was looking for, Kylie? Whatabout you? Yeah? For me,
it was also like I had agood connection with the coaches as my club
coaches knew them, so that kindof helped. And then also just being
in a good conference, as Tejasaid, and when I on my visit,
I just felt so comfortable here andI felt like it was the place
to be. Coach talked to mea little bit about both of these two

(16:29):
and what made you decide that youwanted them to play for a president State.
Well, it's funny because Kylie's coachdid coach her and we didn't know
him. But the funny thing ishe has three girls and none of them
played for US, but two ofthem played at Boise or just one,
just one, just one of themplayed at Boise. I said, Okay,
wait a minute, how good isshe that? You know? We

(16:52):
were always like, well is shegetting recruited by Boise? But no,
when we saw Kylie in this summer, she was she was everything we wanted.
She was inside outside, could handlethe ball, could defend, good
speed, could shoot the three.Obviously hard worker, that's very important.
And her coach could not say enoughabout her and that that means a lot.

(17:15):
It means a lot, especially whenyou're recruiting and you don't get to
see her that many times. Andthen obviously on her visit and her her
family came with her, and youknow, as a coach, we always
we always get a good feeling initially, not always, but when we get
a good feeling initially, we justwe hope it all comes true. So

(17:36):
it definitely did with Kylie, andthen with Tasa. We actually we have
a Canadian Olympian on our staff,Courtney Philipitus. So I think she's built
a good relationship not only with Taja, but with their her coaches and and
with her family over I mean thepast what year, I guess year and

(17:56):
a half and again same thing comeon. It came on the visit and
as we watched her play with herCanadian team, we just really felt like
she was a point guard we werelooking for and that has come true.
Yes, it has definitely something thatwe've seen with her, and obviously her
being able to not only handle it, take care of it, distribute score.

(18:22):
We've seen all of those things. So we're extremely happy with our decision
and TAJA's decision. Taja talked tome through your youth basketball because you played
for She just mentioned the Canadian nationalteam you played for, the U sixteens
and the U seventeens you played atthe Foeba America's in the FIBA World Cup.
Just talk me through that a bit, and then what does Courtney mean
to you? Yeah, I thinkjust getting the opportunity to be able to

(18:45):
represent your country on like an internationalstage is kind of something that you dream
of, So I think it's areally great thing and it taught me so
much about IQ and kind of justplaying within a system, playing your role,
the importance of that, and Ithink the physicality and the different styles
of play that you get to playagainst in the international game is just something
that you don't really get in highschool. So I think I was really

(19:07):
lucky to be able to do that. And then of course having coach Courtney
with me, she kind of wentthrough the same system team Canada that kind
of stuff and she relates to me, and I think it's just really nice,
even though I'm like halfway across thecountry, having her just to kind
of talk to you and relate backto she really makes helps make this feel
like home. Kylie. For you, you were second team all stayed in
Washington. Talked me through what highschool was like for you playing ball.

(19:30):
Yeah, so a little different fromTajus, but it was just like we
had a close conference all. Likethe teams we played was in the like
small area, really close to eachother, so it's always like those big
rival games, and like we hada big gym, so it was a
big atmosphere and just all the fansthat would come to our games. It
was a really cool experience. Nowyou too. I happen to work camp

(19:52):
with both of you guys over thesummer, so I got to it.
Talk to me about your teammates. What's it like, because when you're new,
when you come in and you haveto meet a new group, it
can be it could be tough attimes and kind of be nerve wracking.
What's been like for you too.I think that first week working camp,
we kind of just got to seewho everyone was. That was the first
week we met everybody there then onour visits. But I think they're a
big part of what makes us feelcomfortable here, kind of just learning the

(20:15):
system, learning how life is here. And I think that they're all really
nice and kind of make this familyfeel like a family. Yeah, for
sure. And they just helped usto open arms when we came in the
first day, and they're just sowelcoming and so nice to all of us.
I don't think any of us havea problem so far. So what

(20:36):
made you guys get into basketball? So was it one of those you played
a lot of different sports you likebasketball the most. Or was it something
that you just got a ball inyour hand it felt right? What got
you into the game? My familyis really big on basketball. My dad
played, my mom played, Sothat's kind of the household that I grew
up in. But as a child, I really liked playing other sports.
I was really I really loved doinggymnastics. Actually it was my first thing.

(21:00):
And then I actually a funny story, I tried to let my parents
try to put me in a basketballcamp and I really did not like it.
I cried, I hated it.But growing up when I saw my
sister try, it kind of mademe want to try to, and I
think that it kind of grew onme, And I think growing up in
a basketball household in basketball culture reallyjust made me love the game even more.
What about you, Kylie? Yeah, for me, I just kind

(21:22):
of got thrown into it with allthe other sports who play as a kid,
but it was just the one thatfelt right and I felt most comfortable
with when I got to that agej of deciding which sport. Now,
talk to me about the college level. You guys obviously were very good at
the youth level. Now you're playingin college Tasia at the point guard position.
What have you notice has been maybethe biggest change that you've seen this
season. I think kind of justthe pace and the physicality of the game.

(21:45):
I'm learning a lot of things. There's a lot of things that you
have to kind of be aware ofas a point guard, and I think
our first couple of games you kindof could see that it was a big
adjustment for me. But the morethat I watch and the more that I
practice, I learned so much andkind of just I think playing helps a
lot, just experiencing it and gettinga big opportunity to fill the role that
I need to play. Has helpedme adjust the most. What about you,

(22:07):
Kylie? Yeah, definitely the paceand that physicality has been the biggest
change. And just like it's justa change from high school. So like
getting more comfortable and just playing moregames and playing with the team has helped
throughout preseason games. Coach, whenyou take a look at these two,
you've coached obviously a lot of freshmen. Every year you got freshmen coming in.
They're playing a lot of minutes foryou. Both of them are starters.

(22:29):
Tages started every game, Kylie startedevery game, but one. Is
there anything specifically that you look totell them, maybe some words of advice
or wisdom that you pass along tothose two when they go into games or
anything like that. I remember leaningover to Taj and say it's I said
it's allowed. But there's not thatmany people we were having you because they
had the lights going and the cheerleadersand the band, but yet there still

(22:52):
wasn't really that many people. Theyhad a smaller gym. So obviously as
a freshman there's a lot of anxietya little bit as you start a game
or as you're playing over some ofthe older kids. But both of these
girls, I couldn't ask for abetter a better two that our team players

(23:15):
that are team first, that willdo whatever I ask and when whenever we
ask, and it always is aboutthe team. And I know their teammates
see that too, And it alsohelps when they're two of the hardest working
players on the floor. And Ithink, you know, they've gotten so
much respect from their teammates because ofthat. And I don't think that just

(23:37):
because their freshmen they're playing has causedany anything with any of our players,
and that's that's really nice. It'sjust it's nice to know. And then
I also think too, if ifthey get taken out and somebody goes in
there, they're that person's biggest fan. So that's that's easy to play with
and fun to play with. Iton a team like that, This is
the Bulldog Basketball Out. We're cronWolf five twenty six Thruce Avenue in Clovis.

(24:02):

or so here at Curl and Wolfand Hey, guys, I wanted to

(27:36):
talk to you about your experience.Last week on December twentieth, you were
playing at the Footprint Center in Phoenix. I know, Teja, you had
your team there tier and you onjust talk to me through what it was
like playing in an arena like thaton with the Phoenix Suns. Yeah.
I think just like as a basketballplayer playing in an NBA arena, you
hear that and you get so excited. It's huge. It was bigger than
I could have ever imagined. Itwas my first time being in the Footprint

(27:59):
Center, and I think having myhigh school teammates there also just made it
the game that much more fun. They had little signs for my name,
and that was really cute just tospot them in the crowd. Because the
arenas was so huge, it kindof gave me a place to look at
and kind of just relax a littlebit. But I think the lights and
the court, it was all justan experience that you really just look around
and take in and just appreciate.Yeah, it's something you always dream of,

(28:22):
just playing an NBA center. Ithink from the moment we parked and
like Devin Booker's spot and it wasjust an amazing experience. Yeah, it
was one of those fun Times lastweek as part of the Jerry Clangel Hall
of Fame series, we can't talkall sports, we got to talk some
academics here. So I was askingyou guys off the air, and you
said, you guys pretty much alreadyknow what your major is going to be.

(28:42):
So so how'd you come up withit? In tasion, what is
it? I'm majoring in kinesiology, but the sports administration side, so it's
kind of science y kind of business, ye, which kind of explains like
what I want to do in orbe when I'm older. I really want
to stay in sports, and Ithink that it's a good route for me
to take. And then yeah, just kind of feel it out still,

(29:06):
Yeah, I want to go intopre health, so I'm looking to go
into communicative sciences to be a speechlanguage pathologist, kind of stay in the
school system, but not a teacher. So kind of on the other side
of that, So, well, what was the first semester like for you
guys walking in? Maybe on andoff the court, because obviously you come
in you're playing basketball, which takesa lot of your time. Then academics

(29:26):
takes a lot of your time.So what's it been like, I mean,
we have eight hours of study hollidaysthat we've got to get done,
so I think that makes it alot easier to kind of just stay on
top of what we have to do. Our check ins with Jordan, our
academic advisor, We're just always beingreminded of what we have to do.
And I think time management is thebiggest thing that I've kind of learned is
something that's so important in your firstsemester. And I think we have so

(29:49):
much support around us that helps withour academics and it makes it a lot
easier. What about you, Kylie, Yeah, it's just it's a lot.
There's one thing after another and they'regetting your hours done and then going
to practice, eating the food. There's just everything one thing after another.
But the our support system is amazingand they just help us stay on track.
Coach, these two obviously have theirhead on straight and very good academically.

(30:12):
I mean, what do you whatdo you gotta say about them in
terms of what they do with theirstudies because your team as a whole,
they do a great job. Yeah, I mean last semester we had a
three point four GPA, and I'msure this semester will have a better one.
I just think it's about our culture. It's about, you know,
holding yourself accountable in those moments whenyou're real tired and you'd rather go to

(30:36):
sleep or go to the movies. And I just think we have a lot
of kids that are They have theirpriorities right. Obviously academic and basketball is
the highest priority for them, andthen it makes our job a lot easier.
But I would say that the waywe recruit is very similar to what
these these two have done. Andthat also makes it easy to hold yourself

(31:00):
accountable when everybody else around you isholding yourself theirselves accountable, so you know
it. To be honest, I'vebeen here ten years. I've tried.
I've finally figured it out. HowI don't need to work so hard is
kids that hold themselves accountable. Itneeds to do a great job. Let's
talk about you guys coming invitation. You're from Canada, you're from Washington.

(31:21):
What's it been like coming to thestate of California, Fresno in particular,
What do you do outside of studiesin basketball? I think being in California
was a big thing for me,just to draw me in being in a
different environment. It's just a lotdifferent I think from home, but I'm
learning and I'm enjoying it, andwe just like to go over and eat

(31:42):
food, kind of find some goodplaces around campus that we enjoy. And
we're still learning. But I thinkthat the juniors and the older upperclassmen have
done a really great job of showingus around, telling us things to do.
I mean, they took us tothe beach, they take us to
the movies, and it kind ofjust makes it a lot easier to find
things when there's people who can showyou the way and have been here.

(32:05):
What about you, Kylie, what'sbeen fun for you? Yeah, I
mean it's hard with the amount oftime like we have for practice and stuff.
But outside we do I mean enjoythe sun sign. We always love
to go to the pool. That'salways a muss on the weekends. And
then, just like Astage just said, the upper class would have done a
good job of just showing us aroundthe town kind of new places to go.
We're still trying to find new placesto eat dinner and just things like

(32:28):
that. So do you guys missthe snow Because I'm originally from the Midwest,
and the first thing I noticed wasthere is no snow here, so
it's kind of nice this time.I mean, what is it sixty degrees
right now? And where is sixtyone? Sixty one degrees and we're a
few days from the new year.It smelled like summer. It's ridiculous.
Yeah, I think going home andthere wasn't any snow actually in Toronto when

(32:50):
I was back home for Christmas, but it was very, very chilly,
So I think, I don't knowif it's something that I miss really,
but it's nice to be here andkind of just be realized in the winter,
no winter jacket and no boots, none of that, you know,
scraping off the cars and all thatgood stuff. Exactly What about you,
Kylie? Yeah, I think Ikind of miss it, just like the
different weathers like from throughout the yearand stuff like as Fresno's just warm,

(33:15):
like there's no anything else. SoI kind of missed that. But I
also don't mind. Did you havesnow at home? No, it didn't.
Actually it was rating, but itdidn't snow. Yeah. Yeah,
Midwest I think just got hit witha lot of snow, but everywhere else
seemed pretty mild this year. Butobviously it's warm here. Sixty one degrees.
I mean, I mean, coach, come on, so I was
the coach talk to me about thesetwo young ladies. We were talking about

(33:37):
a little bit and both of themthey're not going to brag about it.
Potato was Mountain West Freshman of theWeek two times, Kylie was one time.
That's three of the seven awards beengiven out have gone to the two
young ladies sitting next to you.And they play different games. But what
did they knit to your team thisseason? Well, I think it really
all started I think in recruiting andif I did my job, I told

(34:00):
them this would happen. But Ialso think that you have to play.
You have to play to get theaccolades that they've gotten, and and to
play, you've got to you've gotto prepare yourself. And so obviously that
that has happened, you know, for our team to get that, for

(34:21):
our team to have the accolades thatwe've had, I just think it shows
really are hard work from our coaches. It's not only about identifying talent,
but it's about having the relationship. And to be honest, my assistants do
such a great job of being onthe phone and setting up calls and and
getting the information to them so theyknow and understand, and talking to their

(34:44):
parents and then and then saying, hey, this is a kid that's really
gonna do well here, because youcan't always tell, like I said,
with you know, just watching kidsa couple of times, and so,
you know, really grateful for myassistance and how hard they've worked, and
as long as I've been here.Coach Mandy's been here, yes, and
coach Shannon's right behind with seven years. Coach Courtney's done a great job going

(35:07):
into her third year, and youknow, we're just you know, I
hate to say it, but Ithink we're pretty blessed to have a great
coaching staff like that. But Ialso think you attract who you are,
and so as my assistants are buildingthose relationships, they're hard workers and they're
successful, and they're attracting that kindof talent. So this is the Bulldog

(38:51):
Norville talking with the Fresno State women'sbasketball coach Jamie whitees, He'sia Santa Maria,
the freshman point guard in Kylie Fox, the freshman. I guess we'll
see guard slash forward because you playmultiple positions, Kylie. As we're gonna
wrap it up with them here injust a few minutes. But one thing
I had a question for both ofyou guys about coming into playing at Fresno
State and playing college basketball. Wasthere a particular opponent you look forward to

(39:14):
playing because you know the schedule, you know the conference, you know,
maybe a place you wanted to goor at Arena you wanted to see Tayja.
What about you coming in? Wasthere anywhere You're like, I can't
wait to go there? Yeah,I gotta say we play them soon San
Jose because I have a high schoolteammate on her on that Timaya, so
I think I'm just so excited tosee her. And then of course Peter,

(39:36):
that's what I would say that game, by the way, that's coming
up on Wednesday, when you guystravel with San Jose. What about you,
Kylie? Yeah, I think airForce. I have a friend old
teammate on the team, so Ithink that's gonna be a good one.
Air Force, by the way,is this Saturday at the Save Art Center.
Talk to me about playing at theSMC the Save Art Center in front
of the Red Wave. What's itbeen like playing and because it's a different
type of gymnasium, it's an arenaat the Save Art Center compared to some

(39:59):
places are just what's it been likeplaying there, playing whole games? I
think it's super cool. I thinkwe're really lucky to be able to play
in Save mart in a huge arena. It gives a really nice environment and
atmosphere. And I think that weget a lot of regulars there, which
is nice, and we always seethem and talk to them after the game.
So again, it just adds anotherlayer of family. Do what we
do. Yeah, it's just anamazing atmosphere and you go other places and

(40:22):
you're like, wow, I reallymiss Save Mark right now, and so
it's just a really it's a reallynice gym. Coach talk to me about,
you know, the couple of freshmencoming in and they were talking about
the fans that are loyal. Youknow, you got the boosters, you
got the alums, everyone just apart of the program. And what's it
been like for maybe introducing a coupleof them to some of those folks.
Yeah, it's been really good.I think one thing that we have is

(40:45):
a it's called the Locker Sponsor. We have a program where people can sign
up to be a sponsor for themand then they have an opportunity to have
a little bit more of a personalrelationship. They can you know, maybe
have lunch once in a while. It's again, we're trying to get to
that. Taja keeps bringing it up, but that family atmosphere and maybe give

(41:07):
them a little bit of, youknow, a little bit of like outside
of basketball connection. Also, wehave a lot of international obviously with Tasia,
but we have a lot of internationalkids that weren't able to go home
for Christmas. And I do think, you know, that's where maybe a
locker sponsor you know, can recognizethat and you know, just be there

(41:30):
for them a little bit. Andthen also those are the people that they're
seeing after the games, day inand day out, and they the great
part about the locker sponsors is thatthey love them no matter what exactly.
No you play, you don't play, you have a good game, you
have a bad game, it doesn'tmatter. They absolutely want to be a
part of our program. So that'sa really nice program to help with our

(41:52):
players and them being away from home. All right, talk to me all
game day, guys, any superstitions, anything that you do that, you
say, hey, I gotta doX, Y and Z or you just
one of those are like, hey, I don't care what happens. I'm
good because I know every player isa little different. So, Tasia,
what's what's your game day look like? I really like home games and kind
of just the routine that I've builtwith shoot around and then the little time

(42:15):
that we get the meal, thetime in between the game. One superstition
that I have. I don't knowif this counts, but I like to
shower before games. I don't thinkshower. Yeah, usually I'll map and
shower and that's kind of the biggestthing that I do every single game.
What about you, Kylie. Yeah, I'm very routine oriented and so I

(42:35):
always have to get my Dutch bros. In the morning, get the same
thing before shoot around, then goto shoot around. I usually shoot with
Coach Courtney before shoot around and thenhave shoot around and then have the team
meal, and then I'll come homeand I'll have my butter noodles and then
I'm ready to go. All right, Okay, notice how they said it's
not it's the routine out their superstitionthat's there's a big difference between the two.

(42:57):
You know, listen, there's nota superstition, and tell you're on
a street you have superstition. You'relike, Oh, should I wear that?
Should I not? What about thosesocks? What about how do I
tie my feet? Sets? Whatever? So when you get on the streak,
you start it makes you crazy inyour head. Is there any games
you guys like to play for funmaybe in your free time. Is there

(43:19):
something that you do. Maybe it'sa board game, maybe it's a maybe
it's a video game, maybe it'ssomething like that. Is there anything that
you do for fun just to kindof relax yourself a little bit, because
after a game, whether it's agood win or a bad game, whether
it's a stressful situation with maybe academics, Is there anything that you do to
just like make yourself chill. Idon't know if I use it to kind

(43:39):
of chill. But I have alittle brother, so I really like to
play video games with him back home. I don't know, we play Fortnite
a bit, but it's nice tokind of just talk to him and play
with him and just kind of disconnectfrom the basketball and everything that I'm doing.
I don't really have a game thatI do, and I don't really
play video games, but I justlike what after practice game? I really

(44:00):
liked, like once I shower,I just like watch TV, put my
phone down, kind of just relax. It gives me a little bit of
time to debreeth what happened or ifit was good or bad. But yeah,
how important coach is that? Though? For a player? I mean
you played now, obviously you coachjust to get away because you know,
you've got so many ups and downs. Sometimes you're you're feeling great, You've

(44:21):
played wonderful, Sometimes you didn't playso good. Sometimes a team is playing
good, sometimes the team isn't.How important is it just to get away
and get your mind off of basketball? Yeah? I think it's really important
obviously. That's why for for us, it's important our kids go home for
Christmas or they have an extended amountof time for Christmas. We really try
to make sure we're off on theweekends or off on Sundays at least.

(44:44):
That way, everybody's off and we'renot necessarily even going to school where you
know they can they can choose togo for a walk or you know,
do whatever, do their shopping, all those things. I think it's really
important, but I don't think.I do think that us as coaches can
support them in giving them breaks andbeing and being good with their time.

(45:08):
We don't want to have them atthe gym the whole time and wasting their
time and not being organized and notbeing prepared. And so we really try
hard. Hopefully they think we dotoo. We really try hard to get
it done, get them out,let them be normal college kids, go
to the movies, go out toeat together, you know, do some

(45:28):
of those things. And I dothink, again, what we do they
do And so if they see usdisconnecting and being with family or taking a
break, then I think they think, Okay, that's okay to do,
and that really is important, especiallyit's it's a marathon. It is a
long career, and you know, you want to be successful and more successful

(45:51):
every year that you play. Soif you don't take care of yourself,
you're gonna be in trouble. Howimportant is the training room for you guys?
Is have the older have the olderones told you, hey, you
know, take care of your bodies. I know you're freshman right now,
but take care of it. Becausethe amount of minutes and the physicality and
all that. It'll it'll back upand it'll wear out. Yeah. I
think me and Kyler are in thereevery day. We're always in an ice
van after practice. That's kind ofa routine that, again, we just

(46:14):
set and I think it helps us, even if it doesn't physically mentally at
least just thinking that we're getting better. But I think it's something that we
do a great job of kind ofstaying on top of. Do you guys
feel like you're pros now because youdon't have classes going on right now for
the next couple of weeks and it'sjust basketball and that's it. Yeah,
it's so nice. Just basketball,go to practice, go to waits,

(46:37):
and then do treatment, and thenwe're home and have that night. It's
just like no homework. It's justreally relaxing. What are you guys looking
forward to for twenty twenty four?Is there anything? I know a lot
of people talk about New Year's resolutions, but get outside of maybe present state
of women's basketball. What are youlooking forward to in twenty twenty four that
you hope is maybe better or somethingyou want to accomplish compared to last year.

(46:57):
I know it's a tough when toput you in the spots ages,
so you can think about that onea little bit. Kylie, what do
you think? Well, I thinkbasketball is I'll start with basketball, just
going to the Mountain West Conference.I went last year with one of my
friends. We were watching Air Forceand Presno and so just seeing that experience
and just kind of experiencing as aplayer, I'm really excited for that.

(47:19):
And then outside just I'm excited we'regonna I think spring break, go on
some trips. I really want togo out of the country. That's one
of my goals this year. SoI think that's kind of my new So
yeah, like Kylie said, I'mreally excited to go to the tournament and
play in the tournament atmosphere with likethat added pressure almost. And outside of
basketball, I think I want totry to start cooking like a little bit

(47:43):
more extravagant meals. I think, like butter noodles are getting kind of older
in our house. So yeah, that's something that I want to try to
in the new year. One thingI asked to Sid and Keiley about was
just all the different languages being spoken. Obviously a practice. Kylie, I
know you know French team you spokena little bit of camp, a little
bit spoken, a little bit ofcamp. So what's it been like with

(48:05):
all the different languages their language maybeyou've heard you're like, oh, I'd
like to learn that one or anythinglike that, or what's it been like?
Just with so many different people speakingso many different languages from all over
the world. It's really a coolexperience just because I mean there's so many
different languages that like I learned Spanishin high school, but it's it's just

(48:29):
that one more thing, like youhear another like one of them talking,
like oh what are they say?Like are they say something about me?
Or like even the training room otherathletes they're talking different languages and they're like
it's just so cool. I wishso I could do that, but I
can Tasia, So you so youknow English? You know you said a
little bit of French is the tiniestbit. What's what does that mean?
Just basically high hello and you cancount? Sure, yeah, a little

(48:52):
bit. I mean I could probablyput together a couple of bad sentences that
like Maria and Franks would laugh atbefore, but whatever can the Indian Frenches?
That's what I learned. Who knowsthe most languages on the team.
Do you know I think or beno? Yeah, I means yeah, she
knows yeh, she knows quite afew. So what's it what's it like

(49:13):
coach a coaching a point guard?Because last season you've coached some good point
guards throughout your career at Presno State. What's it like now getting another good
one coming in because point guard isyou know, a second coach on the
floor. Yeah, it's everything. It's funny. There was a picture the
other day in the media where I'mcalling a play in TAJA's calling and I

(49:35):
thought, oh, my prayers. So it's been great. It's been great.
I think, you know, it'sso excited that, you know,
just the start of our season andeven though it's it's kind of been up
and down, it's been really hopeful. And also every when when every day

(49:55):
you get better and every day yousee our team getting better and working better
together, and obviously starts at thepoint guard spot, and the communication just
so vital and important to our success. So it's really been it's really been
great, and just really excited forthe future and what the conference season holds.

(50:16):
I don't want to make them embarrassed, but the upside on Taja and
Kylie is pretty high. So let'sjust first start off. We just we're
talking about Taja, let's talk aboutKylie, because she doesn't on both ends
on the floor. She's got somegood length, she can shoot it.
She does a good job of runningdown on a fast break and finding that
corner to knock down the three orthe wing. Just what is the upside

(50:36):
for these two young ladies, Well, both of them. If you ever
watch them play like they are consistent, not only in their play like they
will learn from one possession to theother, like oops, did that,
Won't do that again? Or youknow, hey, found my shot there,
Gonna be there again. So thatconsistency helps not only their coaches,

(50:59):
but their teammates. The other thingis that obviously having I think they both
have really good basketball IQ and sothat helps in a bunch of different ways.
But for example, Kylie, shehas really good she can read passes.
Defensively, she has good timing, she can get out and get steals.

(51:22):
You can't tell she's mad, butsometimes I think she's mad and then
she does get a steal because she'sjust mad enough at the last place.
So I've really liked coaching that, and that's that's obviously easy. And then
they understand our terminology. So thatis part of the transition. Whether you're
a freshman or a junior college comingin, you've got to understand our terminology,

(51:43):
and especially like when most words Idon't even say correctly, so coach
has got her own own language. But they understand that and are able to
play off of that. And thenthe other thing with Tasia is that she
understands not only the offense, butwhat the offense is looking for. And
so if she maybe doesn't get thefirst pass, she'll dribble out, or

(52:06):
if she you know, if somebody'sin the wrong spot, she runs it
anyway, and she's able to helpthe girls understand how to get into it.
And that's really been helpful for oursuccess. Well, ladies, thanks
for joining us here at Curl andWolf. I'm gonna chat with coach White,
but that's going to wrap things upwith Tajeus, Santa Marie and Kylie
Fox. We are a cron Wolf. This is the Bulldog Basketball Hour.

to play them. It's also ourmilitary night, so I think there's probably

(56:28):
a couple promotions that that are goingto be happening. But obviously playing air
Force is special and and what theygo through and what they do is and
so we want to honor that. And then afterwards we'll be up in the
concourse and all the girls will comeup and sign autographs and they'll be posters
to be given out. We alsoare still doing our half court shot.

(56:50):
I don't remember the money. Idon't remember what it's at. It.
I think people are adding to ittoo, so I think it's at least
five hundred dollars. Okay, Okay, So if you feel if you're filling
lucky, you got to sign upright there where you come in on the
concourse and then they pick a nameand then you can shoot the half court
shot. So it's too bad we'renot out there to watch. That's exciting.

(57:13):
It's been fun to watch, butthat's always happening. And then you
know, the start of our seasonobviously has been you know, at the
start of conference is really important talkingto me about San Diego State. It's
going to be on CBS Sports Networkat San Diego State. That's a week
from a Sunday, and it's goingto be one of those nationally televised games
for you guys to get to playin front of a nationally televised audience.

(57:37):
Yeah, we're we're really I mean, I think that's awesome. Last year
we had four or five games onthe national TV in the conference and we
were not able to be one ofthem, and so we're really excited to
be a part of that this year. To play down at San Diego obviously
kind of a cross state rivalry, and so I think our kids are really

(58:00):
excited. We're going down there onSaturday. We'll play Sunday and be back
that night, so really really excitedfor that. I think that's huge for
our conference and we're really looking forwardto being on TV. And then well
that's gonna wrap up the Bulldog BasketballHour from crowin Wolf five twenty six Bruce
Avenue Coach White, thanks for thetime. She will be back out with
