basketball for the next hour. We'rehere at Crowing Wall right off for hernon
(00:45):

man, so nice. They've openedup those big rolling doors, so the
outside tables are hopping. They've gotfood trucks here tonight. Get baked five
five nine about potatoes there by theway, Got potatoes. Mad Duck Craft

Seven o'clock, and I've got alittle trivia I'm gonna throw at you
if you want to win some ticketsto Saturday Nights show Down with nineteen Franks
(01:32):
San Diego State. But let mefirst introduce our guest tonight, the head
coach of your Fresno State Bulldogs, coach Justin Hudson. Coach. How you
doing, Paul Hey, Happy tobe here, man, and I'm always
It's been a crazy, crazy season, right and you've had to the last
(01:53):
couple of games, You've had todo some things you probably never expected to
do. Play extremely un play adifferent fashion. You almost knocked off a
really good UNLV team, had achance to win that at the Buzzer.
Then you had to go up toBoise very shorthanded. And now you get
your old squad, San Diego Statecoming in here, a nationally ranked team
(02:14):
at the Save Mart Center. Whatare you looking forward to Saturday night at
seven o'clock? Uh? You know, At first, it's all you know,
all the coaches that I know, you know, say hello to they
don't want to talk to him today. But then after that, just the
competition. You know, you hopehe not could be back. Not sure
if that's gonna happen or not,but you know, looking forward to the
(02:36):
competition. And what does it mean? I mean, you opened conference play
against these guys down there at vAHAs and if anyone's paid attention to Mountain
West basketball, they know playing SanDiego State on the road is a little
different from playing them at home. And you've beaten them here at the Save
Mart Center when they were nationally rankedlike they are now. You might have
(02:58):
had a little more depth at thetime that you beat, didn't have so
many guys missing it. What doesthat mean to have a nationally ranked team
and a team that played in thenational championship game last year and several of
those same players coming to your place. What kind of opportunity is that for
your team? It's a great opportunity. You know, we are some really
good teams in this conference, andit's a it's a great opportunity to play
(03:22):
a nationally ranked team at home. That's always great, and to play your
old team, that's always fun.And just to compete, you know,
go out there and compete, andno matter who you have, you know,
no excuses, go out there anddo the best you can, you
know, try to make some adjustments. You know. Again, we need
to have a big fellow, youknow, because they got a big fellow
(03:43):
that's really good, so we needsomebody to match up with him. But
uh, you know, here northere. It is exciting. And I
think the first time we played them, I think the crowd got us a
little bit, you know, andyou didn't recognize that because I've been in
that place so long, but eightnew guys, you didn't recognize that the
crowd might get us a tad bit, and it did. I think it
got us at BYU and at SDSU. I think both those games, I
(04:08):
think once the avalanche hit and thecrowd got going, I don't I think
our inexperience creeped in. I thinkwe've been better on the road since then,
you know, of holding our composure. We just didn't have enough against
Boise, I mean that was true. And you also didn't have enough free
throws that I mean when the otherteam shoots seventeen free throws before you get
(04:30):
your first. That doesn't happen everyday now. I mean it was a
twenty four point loss. I'm notmaking an excuse, but that the momentum
of the game, I saw youget pretty upset, and I thought you
might even get it technical because youwere fighting for your guys. I mean
that you were attacking the basket andcouldn't buy a free throw. I think
how many technicals have I gotten onesince we've been here? I remember one?
(04:50):
I think Chris Rastat or TGF onetime, right, I believe so.
Yeah, And I was trying toget one at Poison, but the
the experienced referee came over and spoketo me. And it doesn't take much
to calm me down in the gameat least, and so I calmed down
and continue to coach the game. It's like you say, that's not reason
why we lost. However, itdid hurt at the start, and most
(05:14):
of ours were fouls. We wereundersize and they we got out the way
and slapped down. Most of themwere fouls, but we thought we got
fouled a few times too. Butthat's the way it goes all the time.
I mean, that's I don't haveany problem with the referees, very
true. I mean, it's it'sa subjective science and it is not an
easy job. And I was watchingSan Diego State and Utah State the other
night. Those are the next twoteams are going to play, and I
(05:35):
was thinking how hard that game wasto officiate the way Ladie and ausibor banging
underneath. And you mentioned San DiegoState's got a really good big guy in
Jayden Ledee, And it was veryinteresting to watch their run of the tournament
last year because he came on sostrong and in the regular season last year,
especially when you saw him in theregular season, he wasn't standing out
(05:56):
the way he is now. Howmuch of their offense runs through him now,
I mean you almost never see theirguards handling the ball. The possessions
are going through the big men.You know, guys get better, right,
I mean, I think you've seenthat here. You know that we've
had a couple of years where you'veknown exactly where the ball was going to
go and it stayed that way veryconsistently from the start to the finish.
But you know, some of theother years you've seen guys step up and
(06:17):
get better, and that's what heis. He did last year and he
carried it over to this year, and it goes through him quite often.
You know. They do run andshoot it pretty fast. They're better offensively
than they've been, you know, but when they need a basket, I
tell you, he's running straight downthat middle of the floor and he's gonna
hit you and turn around and tryto score. And they're going to try
to enter that ball in from uptop and get him the ball. And
(06:40):
you know, it's unfortunate that we'vewere playing. We got the three biggest
teams, you know, with Boisehe Sentio State in Utah State with the
ben big men. Without our bigyou know, it's one thing to lose
at Guardo. He was hampered allyear, you know, and we definitely
needed him, but he was hamperedall year. But Enoch was coming along
and playing pretty well, and wewere still a little being on the bench.
(07:00):
But at least you can start offand say keep him out of foul
trouble, you know, putting Leoin their guard and their five man gets
really tough. Well. I mean, you guys are creative coaches, and
the collective experience of your staff, and you got three assistant coaches who have
been head coaches at this level thatare part of your staff. So I
know all you guys have gotten creativea lot over the years, and we're
(07:23):
looking forward to seeing what kind ofcreativity you can bust out. We'll be
creative. I'll tell you that we'llbe creative. And I'll tell you Leo
will give you all his all.And that's one thing that we know he
will do is he's he will giveyou his all. He will be ready
to compete. He will have amotor. We got to keep that sucker
out of foul trouble. Amen tothat. And the last time Leo Colomario
(07:43):
the Senior played in the same martCenter, he busted out with a career
high thirty points against UNLV. Sothat's where he'll be Saturday night, seven
o'clock to tip against San Diego State. If you go online right now at
go Bulldogs dot com, you cantake advantage of a two for twenty two
dollars ticket deal for that show downwith San Diego State. The nineteenth ranked
Aztecs here Saturday night, seven o'clockand don't go to the concession stand at
(08:07):
halftime because that's going to be veryspecial. Coach. I know you'll be
in the locker room at halftime talkingto your team. But it's not too
often that a player gets his numberretired. And you got to experience this
couple of years ago when Paul Georgecame back for his honor. And now
Rod Higgins, and where would thisprogram be without Rod Higgins? His number
twenty two is gonna get hung fromthe rafters Saturday night. Your players are
(08:31):
so young, are you gonna haveto explain to them a little bit who
Rod Higgins is. Yeah, we'lltalk to him about it tomorrow. They
definitely will. And that's no knockon Rod. I know who Roddy is,
and I know what Rod has done, and it's an honor to be
here. Why Rod's going to behonored? You know, Well, probably
we'll have to explain a little bitto the young fellas. Rod Higgins will
be here Saturday night. He's actuallygoing to join our show via the phone
(08:54):
at about six thirty tonight, sowe'll have a chance to ask a few
questions of Rod Higgins. If you'vegot a question for him or for Coach
Hut, you can send it ourway. On Twitter or the x app.
Use that hashtag ask fs and here'sa little trivia question for you if
you're listening. If you're the firstperson to give me the right answer on
Twitter, we'll send you some ticketsto Saturday night's game. I asked Rod
(09:16):
coach on the phone, and hewasn't sure what school record he still held.
It's four consecutive free throws. Doyou remember the most you ever made
in a row? Most foul shotsthere made? It wasn't in the game,
you know, a while you're practice. I didn't get fouled a whole
lot. You know. I wasa guy who passed the ball a lot.
I didn't take the ball to thebasket and drew a lot of contact.
(09:39):
But I remember at a basketball campwhen I just finished college at cal
State Bakersfield, I was demonstrating freethrows and the assistant coach was running the
camp and he put me he wantedme to switch them, and I think
I came through pretty good in frontof the camper. So that's my only
free throw story I necessarily have, besides hitting a couple at the end of
the game. But how many youthink that was at the camp? Probably
(10:01):
eighteen nineteen. So huh huh, okay, pretty good. Ol Rod Higgins
has the school record still forty twoyears after his last game, twenty eight
consecutive foul shots made. How aboutthat at Fresno State. So we already
had a Twitter winner get some ticketsbecause they guess that. But here's the
other piece. In his NBA career, thirteen year NBA career, eighty one
(10:24):
percent career foul shooter. Do Iguess he was a pretty good frit thow
shooter? I think he was,and we'll have to ask him why.
But one time he went a perfectfourteen for fourteen in a game in the
NBA. So, if you're outthere listening or you're following us on Twitter,
if you tell me what NBA teamthat was against, you'll win tickets
(10:46):
to Saturday Night's game. I'll giveyou a hint. It was in nineteen
eighty seven when Rod was playing forthe Warriors. He went fourteen for fourteen
from the line. So who wasthat against? If you get it right,
we'll give you tickets to Saturday Nightsgame. And when we come back
more with Tutson, we'll talk aboutthe matchup with the Aztecs. Come join

You can get two tickets for twentytwo dollars. If you go to go
(15:16):

Higgins trivia question. We asked youwhich NBA team did Rod go a perfect
fourteen for fourteen from the line againstback in nineteen eighty seven. Here's a
little hint if you know your yourcollege basketball too. The best player on
the other team that night actually playedfor Saturday night's opponent, San Diego State,
(15:37):
so that may be a giveaway.I won't get into hairstyles. That
would help you too. But we'rehere at Crow and Wolf until seven o'clock
talking to coach Justin Hudson. Ifyou've got a question, you can send
it in on Twitter with the hashtagask fs coach. For your guys,
when they go through a stretch likethis where Eduardo Andre gets hurt, he's
out for the year. Donovan Yappgets hurt, he's out for the year.
(15:58):
Chukes was already out for the year, Mike kel never got to play.
Now he's been, you know, out with an ankle injury, and
and that the bad news starts mounting. How do you keep them focused?
How do you keep them encouraged andwhat makes the difference with having them focused
and dialed in for the challenge infront of them. We talked about that
(16:21):
today after practice, and uh,it's a team. It's a team thing.
It's it's about I told them theywere good guys and all of them
have gotten better, you know,They've all worked hard. And it's sometimes
it gets tough when you're when you'redropping games and you're dropping players. And
I said it was twofold. Isaid, if I was a lesser man,
(16:41):
you might not be playing as well. I said, if you guys
weren't good men like you are,you probably wouldn't be listening to me.
I said, it's just like anythingelse that we're doing, it's all about
the team. I have to demandit and show them love, and I
kick them when they're down, youknow, and no when to pick them
up, and no when to patthem on the back and when to tell
them they can do better. Andthat's what every coach's job is. And
(17:03):
it gets tougher in these times, these times when you're traveling and you're not
winning as many games as you wouldlike and the season didn't go how you
would like. I have to leadbut just because I lead doesn't mean they
will follow. So I told themI appreciate how they followed too, and
I appreciate their efforts and their character, and I'm not going to expect anything
different on the on the remainder ofthis year, no matter if any somebody
(17:26):
else goes down. And we gotto play with five six guys, We've
all had some dreams and of howthis season was gonna go. We knew
our room for air. We knewwe had a pretty good team, but
our room for air was small. We knew that going in. We knew
everybody had to be good, andeverybody had and we weren't early. But
with seven or eight new guys,we got better and an injury bug heard
(17:47):
us and it doesn't matter. Nobodycares, And we talk about that a
lot too. Nobody cares. Sobesides their parents and the people that were
in the gym, and obviously thetimeout club and the starting five, they
stand. But you know, itdoesn't matter, is what we're trying to
say. It's no excuses. It'stime to put up and come out and
(18:07):
play and have a good attitude, practice right, be a good teammate,
and you're learning life lessons through someof this stuff, not only them,
us coaches also well, there issome good news as far as player availability
that we'll touch on here as well, and that'll be very welcome. But
the schedule, now, I knowyou have to take one game at a
(18:27):
time, and with San Diego State, you're taking one possession at the time.
I mean, that's how you approachevery game. But you look,
if a fan, you know, looks at the big picture, they say,
the next four games are these teamsright now that are projected to play
in the NC two A tournament, right San Diego State, Utah State,
Nevada, New Mexico to the firsttwo at home, the next two on
(18:48):
the road. When you know that'swhat you're going to be up against,
is there some value in that toknow the quality of the competition and maybe
the opportunity it provides your guys orwhat it might win if if you're competitive
or win one of those games peopledon't expect you to. You definitely looked
at it. I think I'll giveyou this answer. At the start of
the season, we loved it becausewe said, hey, you know,
(19:11):
we do have seven eight new guys. We had a very tough preseason schedule.
Yeah, we said we'll be seasonedby the time we play these four
teams. That I mean, wepretty much knew these four teams were gonna
be pretty good. Yeah, youknow, you always have some surprises,
your Utah station. Surprise that hewas able to take those guys within him
from Montana State and they were ableto perform the way they are. Yeah,
you know, and that happens allover the country. But it also
(19:33):
doesn't happen right, you know,He's not the first one that's made that
happen, But at the same pointin time does not make sure that's easy.
He's done a heck of a jobwith those guys. But we looked
at that at the start of theseason and said, perfect, we're gonna
play some of the top teams laterwhile while we will be better to be
seasoned, we'll have a chance toget some resume wins. It just hasn't
(19:53):
worked out that way for us withthe injuries, and we were hitting on
some of the injuries a moment go. But on top of the injuries,
you had a young man who probablywould have played a lot the last couple
of games who wasn't here because hehad a death in the family. Isaac
Tavaris's grandmother who raised him and theDominican Republic passed away, so he went
back home. What's the latest onIsaac and will he be able to help
(20:17):
you Saturday night against the Aztechs. He will. What a wonderful spirit that
young man has and he you know, he did have a death in the
family. You know, he wastorn. He wanted to be here,
but obviously he needed to get backand we were very supportive. Obviously,
no no cookies for that. Imean, go ahead and get back as
much as you can. And heand we expected him maybe back for Boise,
but he couldn't make it. Sohe'll be back, you know,
(20:40):
for the San Diego State game, and his opportunities will be there now.
You know, with Donovan out,his opportunities will be there now, and
he'll bring some athleticism, he'll getto the basket. He brings energy.
You know, he's very exciting. And we talked about everybody getting better this
year and this is the opportunity inthe next five six games for him to
get better. Well, that leadsme right into my next question, because
(21:03):
you know there are some years whereyou don't know what's going to happen the
last couple of weeks. Just theway the cookie has crumbled this year,
and the way the standings are,and the fact that you've beaten the two
teams below you twice and you owna tiebreaker over both of them. It's
highly unlikely that you're going to bein any you know, tournament opener other
than the eight nine game, right, so your seating is probably not going
(21:26):
to change too much. I mean, that would be a surprise that would
take a lot of other things happening. Tell you the truth, I don't
really look at that stuff. Youknow. Sorry for running and I hate
to tell you, but I'm gonnalet you educate me in a minute.
I mean, I've been a NCAAtournaments. Yeah, so you know I'm
a poor loser. I'm not RickPatino. I'm not gonna sit and talk
about my guys right now, andthen I have to apologize that that was
(21:48):
rough, right, But we alldon't like it. Losing sucks, So
I mean, I'm not the yearswe're fourth, we were fourth, we
were third. Yeah, you know, you know, if you're not playing
for first, it's tough. Ifyou're not in the instant a tournament conversation
on the bubble was tough. Thisis something that I you know, I
was there seven eighth straight. You'retwo years at UNOV, Yeah, you
(22:08):
know, the years at SDSU,and you're gonna have to educate me because
when it's that way, I'm definitelya poor lose. I don't look at
the standings. I don't know who'sin first. To tell you the truth,
I know they're all jumbled up.Yeah this year most understand they're all
jumbled up. But I can't standto look at it because then I'm gonna
look where FREDLM State's at now,and I'm disappointed. So where are we
(22:30):
where it gonna be an eight nine? It looks that way, okay,
And that was just my question isyou know, if you don't have an
opportunity to change your seating much, what else are you playing for? Is
it momentum? Is it individual playerdevelopment? Is it trying to be you
know better? Is it's playing tobetter and win the game. I mean
we're trying to win the games nowwith Enoch and out that. I mean,
(22:52):
it gets really tough. I'm justgonna be honest. That's the way
I've always been this six years here. We can strategize all you want,
you know, but you know,we're playing the three three teams with the
We played three teams with the bestbig men without a big man, right,
and it's kind of how it's going. And but we can definitely get
better. We can definitely compete. You saw that versus UNLV. So there's
(23:15):
no we don't We don't come inany different. We're not preparing any different.
We're not talking about not winning. We're coming in to try to win
the game. And we're giving ourselvesa game plan and we're telling the young
men, this is how we're gonnawin it. If we're gonna win it,
we have to do this. Thisis how we have to play.
These are the things that have tohappen, and on both ends of the
(23:37):
floor, and I'll keep them toourselves. You know, it's prob where
(25:47):
he is on the floor might bethrown it from the opposite side of the
floor. And it's getting through. We got a couple more minutes before we
take a break, and we're goingto bring Rod Higgins on to take us
down memory lane a little bit, recalling Grant's tomb in the Glory days of
the early nineteen eighties when Fresno's datemade it all the way to the sweet
sixteen, and that era will behonored. Rod Higgins will be honored with
(26:08):
his number retired Saturday night, seveno'clock at the same mart Center. If
you don't have your tickets yet,go Bulldogs dot com right now. You
can get two for twenty two,or you can win a pair maybe more
than that by answering our trivia questionon Twitter. One thing that Coach Q's
brought up on the last couple broadcasts, as you've been playing shorthanded and you
(26:30):
don't have a lot of options onthe bench, right, I mean,
there's a downside to that. Ifa guy really isn't playing well, you
don't have that many options for holdingthem accountable. But on the side,
there are guys that maybe are gettinglonger stretches of playing time and having an
opportunity to play through their mistakes andmaybe smooth things out. Have you seen
(26:51):
a guy or two you think hasreally benefited from more extended playing time because
of the situation you're in. Ithink they all have, you know,
I think you know, I don'tsee anybody that has done anything so out
of the ordinary. You know, maybe Leo that time. I think Leo
playing the five at times gives himan offensive advantage. So that's why you
(27:12):
see a breakout of thirty points. You know that one game there's I think
he might be the one that youwould say he got longer stretches at a
different position, right, you know, I mean you can point to all.
I thought it was gonna be Isaac, to tell you the truth.
I thought, Isaac, you mightsee him play a little bit more and
be able to play through some ofthose mistakes that we all see him make.
(27:34):
They're definitely aggressive mistakes, aren't they. And I think when you look
at it, maybe him in thenext four or five games, maybe starting
Saturday night against San Diego State. We'll talk more about that when we come
back. The Bulldog Legend Rod Higginsgonna join us on the phone when we
return. It's the Bulldog Basketball Hour. We're here at Crowing Wolf Herndon A
one sixty eight. Some great foodtrucks here tonight. The Baked Potatoes,
(27:57):
the Mad Duck truck, and theCraft ninety nine Craft pizza. That stuff's
good. I'm smelling it. Imight be ordering some too, come join

the Bulldog Basketball Our here at CrownWolf just off of Hernon in one sixty
eight, just a couple exits awayfrom the Save Mart Center, and that's
the place to be. Saturday night, seven o'clock tip for Fresno State hosting
nineteenth ranked San Diego State. Andthat's the one and only time, the
only night you can ever see what'sgonna happen Saturday night at halftime, that'll
(31:37):
be the number twenty two being revealedin the rafters in honor of the great
Rod Higgins. What a legendary bulldog. And we have Rod Higgins joining us
now. And Rod, you saidsomething to me yesterday, you know,
because a lot of the fans havesaid, hey, this is overdue.
We've been waiting for this, anda lot of the fans have and sounds
(31:59):
for you, you weren't even thinkingabout it, wasn't on your radar.
What did this mean to you tofind out that your number twenty two was
going up in the Save Mart Center. It's just it's a celebratory time for
me and you know, in myfamily. So it's it's always good to
be recognized, you know. It'sit's it's all what I was trying to
(32:24):
express the other day, you know, with the you know, I've heard
the comments, you know, alongOverdow, but you know, I don't
see it like that. I seeit that the due date is two twenty
four, twenty four. That's Imean, that's what it is. And
I'm going to enjoy it. I'llhelp my family with me. So look
(32:44):
forward to the evening. Well,I know a ton of people are looking
forward to seeing you and celebrating everythingyou did for the program and for this
community and and there's so much ofthat that we won't have time to cover
it all, but we'll talk alittle little bit about it. And I've
got coach Justin Hudson here sitting withme at Crowing Wolf, and he'd like
(33:05):
to say loo as well, Coachgo ahead, yes, just to honor
that we'll be able to be there. Why he gets this secretory night because
I was definitely he's very humble, because I was thinking, boy, it
took a while because I've known aboutRod. I didn't know Rod very well,
but I've known about Rod for along time and have been a big
fan from AFAR and I'm just honoredthat I'll be able to be there that
(33:25):
Saturday night to see that. Also, Well, I appreciate that. How
often do you get I'm sorry,I didn't mean a step on you there,
go ahead, no, good,No, you are welcome. Well,
I was going to ask, youknow, how often you get a
chance to be around the college gamethese days, because both of your sons
(33:47):
played college ball. Rick was itcal Poly for a while then joined Corey
there at Colorado where he set thefree throw record just like you did here.
But in the last ten years orso, how often do you get
to hang out around college players.Well, you know, when I was
in the profession working I would geta chance to go and through some scouting
(34:08):
and you know, you always haveto keep your eye on the young talent
that it's coming up in the collegeranks. I mean as as late I
see, you know, I seesome games on TV. You know,
try to watch as much as Ipossibly can, but it's you know,
it's it's a little the games isso different, Like you know, coming
(34:30):
from an NBA you know scenario andwatching the NBA players a lot and watch
the college game. It's a differentgame, probably because of the popularity of
the players in the NBA compared tosome of the kids that are just trying
to make their names in college andstyle of players different. So answer you,
(34:54):
but your part, I probably don'tsee as much as I would like
to. But I'm looking for justthat of his game for sure. But
we're gonna junk it up for youride. We lost both of our bigs
and were playing a beast inside. So you gonna see all kinds of defenses.
You're gonna try to figure which oneof them out a whole bunch of
illegal defenses. And there's no suchthing as a little bit defense in college,
(35:17):
right, Yeah, exactly. Wemight try to put six guys out
there looking to get a technical. But I don't know if you guys know
I recruited Rod's sons when I wasat cal Poly. I believe it was
after my first year there. You'rea college coach, and then I got
an honor to meet them. Andyou know, we all know how great
a basketball player he is, andwe've heard the stories about a great man.
(35:40):
But what a great family. Iappreciate that man, and the whole
family is going to be here Saturday. We're looking forward to that. And
coach, I bet you would loveto borrow some of that Boy Grant style
defense from the early nineteen ten.Stick stick back in those day was a
(36:00):
shot clock not being in place, you know it. It was a different
style of playback in those days, for sure, Yes it was. Did
you ever get bored out there?I mean in baseball you know sometimes the
right field or fall asleep when youguys didn't have the shot clock and you're
holding it four corner style. Whereyou ever nodding off out there on the
(36:22):
floor. Not when you have coachboy Grant staring you down. No way,
Jose coaches attempting to particularly on thedefensive end, every every situation.
Defensively, we knew where our visionwas supposed to be. We knew where
(36:45):
our feet was supposed to be,We knew where our hands were supposed to
be. So all of those things. Coach it was no, it was
no guessing games, particularly on thedefensive end. You know, Coach hut
has had a chance to coach afew NBA players, and I know there
are times where they draw on thethings they learned in college, right.
(37:08):
I mean, I'm sure you andKawhi Leonard have had a few conversations about
defensive priorities and stuff. Coach Mancow I didn't talk. Come on,
man, I mean you know theydid. I mean, he played for
US for two years and I'm themain recruiter of it and probably got about
five words out of him for threeyears. But you know, one good
(37:30):
thing he you know, they dida. I think they did a TV
special on me when I was downthere, right before I left, and
why I was there, and theyasked him some questions, and he asked,
he spoke, and the only thinghe said that I've ever heard him
say positive about me is he said, well, Coach said, you're gonna
be here for two and a halfhours, so you might as well work
hard for the whole two and ahalf hour. He said, So I'm
gonna decide to do it. Andthat's the last thing I remember him saying,
(37:52):
besides what's up, hut, youknow he ain't gonna give you a
whole lot. Now, Well, that's a little more recent history from what
I'm about to ask Rod Higgins about. We've got Higgins on the phone.
Coach Hutter is here at Crow andWolf just off of Herndon in one sixty
eight. Rod, I'm thinking aboutall the baseball players that I've talked to
at Fresno State over the years, whether they've played for Pete Biden or Bob
(38:12):
Bennett. It was this common refrainyou'd hear that once they got to the
pros, everybody knew they were fromFresno State because their fundamentals were so solid,
they did everything the way they weresupposed to be done. And I'm
wondering for you if there was alittle bit of that flavor, because i
mean, the Bulls draft you inthe second round and you're there starting games.
I mean, you had a gameyour rookie year you blocked five shots.
(38:34):
Who does that when they're six seven. I'm just wondering if there were
times in your NBA career where youlook back on your time at Fresno State
you said, you know, I'mreally glad I had that coaching staff in
college. Uh Man, that's absolutelycorrect in that statement, because what happens,
you know, certain things travel.Defense travels. You know, it's
(38:59):
kind of like to see you likewhen you're a good rebounder in college,
it's your NBA prospect that in carryto the next level. So for sure,
learning that end of the court helpedme to the next level. You
know, I was able to feelcomfortable and guarden certain people and me.
(39:20):
And sometimes it didn't matter what kindof defensive knowledge you thought you had,
you're gonna get cooked because it's stillthe NBA. You're gonna be difficult to
stop players. So yeah, Imean absolutely coach Staff when he started recruiting
me as a seventeen year old highschool player. I mean an ultimately come
(39:40):
in there with he and Coach Grant. You know, I couldn't have wrote
it of written it any better thanhow it stayed out. Yeah, I
mean, there's so many things thatyou've done, the first Presno State grad
to be a GM in the NBA. I run into people all the time,
(40:00):
so they're still talking about those campsyou had, which nobody does any
more the way you did them. Then with your buddies Bobby Anderson and Tyrone
Bradley and bringing Michael Jordan here tothe valley every single year, and that
changed the childhoods of so many peoplein our valley and really open their eyes
to different possibilities. So I knowthere are a lot of people who want
(40:21):
to thank you for that. ButI'm just thinking, since we're talking a
little hoops here and we were talkingabout what coach Hudson's team is dealing with
being undersized against San Diego State. You saw their big man, Jayden Ledie.
You know how he likes to playand how big he is. I'm
wondering if you think back on thirteenyears in the NBA, What was the
toughest mismatch you ever had to dealwith? Who was the guy that you
(40:43):
got stuck trying to guard that youreally had to summon everything you had to
hold your own against. Yeah.I've been asked that question quite a few
times over my career. And theguy that with the nightmare, absolute nightmare
for me, was Charles Barkley. You know Charles, could you know he's
(41:08):
fit for He's stronger than you,he's weighs thirty more pounds or whatever.
His weight was quicker than you.And it was just a fantastic player he
was. He was a matchup problemat least you got him on the golf
(41:30):
course, right. You know. It's funny though, when I played with
him a long time ago and theswing that he has, you know,
formed over the years where he hada serious hits in his swing. When
(41:50):
when I played with him one timein santam Bob, I think we were
at Michael's camp and he had noneof that. His swing was just as
fluid. And then I guess see, probably got into his own head and
it was tough for him to getout of it. I think he's changed
to swing it back where he's morefluid now, I hope. So that's
a terrific game right there. Oh, there are so many stories that we
(42:20):
could tell and so many questions wecould ask. And I know we'll have
a brief chance in front of theRed Wave on Saturday night to talk to
you in a real special moment, but while we've got you on the radio,
you know, and just a couplemore minutes here, Who are the
unsung heroes in your life that haveallowed you to do what you've done?
I mean, the record breaking careerhere at Fresno State, thirteen years in
(42:43):
the league, NBA general manager, all the other things that you've done,
really, you know, leading yoursons into their careers which are related to
the game that you love. Whoare the people that you would say have
been instrumental in everything you've done. That's a great question. You know,
the two guys that I mentioned earlier, obviously coach Brand and Coach Strash,
(43:07):
who obviously aren't with us anymore. You know, missed those guys of you
know, the my two friends therein in the fact, you know you
mentioned Bobby and just and I'm sorry, doctor Robert Anderson and Tyrone Bradley those
(43:28):
were on my point guards, sothey were they're part of this as well
because they passed me the bot andknowing the way my game was had I
was not a you know, anindividual type player. I had to rely
I was to catch a shoe player, which I had to have good point
(43:49):
guards next to me, you know, whether that's Tyrone and Bobby, whether
that's you know, Tim Hardaway whenI was in the pros. You know,
those kind of point guards that cancreate for you. So it's obviously
important to have, you know,a bunch of guys around you. And
(44:12):
I think that was one of thebenefits of also in the era that we
played in because that was pre cellphone, so you really had to communicate
in different ways with your teammates. You know, you guys had to rely
on each other a lot more thanprobably the current players doing, you know,
in basketball, in college basketball andprofessional basketball just the way of the
(44:36):
world now, So it was agood time to bond with your teammates,
and a lot of them my teammateswere big factor in my success. Well
hopefully we're going to see a wholelot of them on Saturday night as well.
(44:57):
Seven o'clock is when the game tipsoff halftime is when the great Rod
Higgins will have his number twenty tworetired. If Coach Hudson has anything else,
I'll let him get a last wordin. But your comment there,
Rod brought up a question in mymind. Well, in one thought too,
you're talking about all your great pointguards. I guess that means you're
gonna give Winston Garland all the creditfor your career high forty one points against
(45:19):
Dale Ellis and the Sonics in nineteeneighty eight. But I'm wondering if there
is one play you made in yourNBA career that, if it were the
social media cell phone age we're livingin now, that would have gone viral,
that everybody would have been sharing andtalking about and your phone would have
been blown up about Is there somethingthat comes to mind? Oh? Wow,
(45:40):
that really right? Not really offthe top of my head. Probably
some jumps that I might have had, you know, that's the kind of
stuff that pops up on ESPN andthings like the Highlight fil the Highlight reel.
But yeah, yeah, that's that'sa tough one. I can't really
put my finger on something on thatone. All right, Well, if
(46:04):
you think of it by Saturday night, we'll let you share it with the
whole crowd at the Save Mart Center. Thanks so much for taking some time
for us tonight. Safe travels toFresno. We look forward to seeing you
and your wife and your whole family. I appreciate that, guys, and
I appreciate you having me on allright. That is the one and only

Saturday, of course, is BulldogBasketball the Saint Mart Center. Thanks
again to the great Rod Higgins fortaking some time with us. You'll hear
more from him on Saturday, especiallyif you're there, because he'll be taking
the floor at halftime with his family. As his number twenty two joins Paul
(53:53):
George's number twenty four and the tworetired in Jerry Tarkanian's honor hanging from the
rafter at the Save Mart Center.I threw out a trivia question earlier for
you. If you send me theanswer on Twitter, I'll give you some
tickets to the game Saturday night. That one was which team did Rod Higgins
go a perfect fourteen for fourteen aline against from the line against in nineteen
(54:15):
eighty seven for the Golden State Warriors. By the way, I said,
the best player on the other teamplayed for San Diego State, the team
the Bulldogs are playing Saturday night,So maybe that'll give you an idea.
Rod Higgins was the Warriors leading scorerthat night, by the way, with
twenty six points. He once hada thirty point game off the bench against
(54:35):
a team with a star player whohad ended Fresno State season in the NCAA
tournament. Maybe you can figure outhow one is. If you'sen that answer,
I'll give you some tickets as well. Or here's the best one.
If you were listening closely, youalready know the answer. Rod Higgins in
thirteen years in the NBA, thebest game he ever had, the highest
scoring game he ever enjoyed, wason February twenty seventh, nineteen eighty eight,
(54:58):
so that would be the same weekwe're honoring him. In forty two
minutes, he scored forty one pointswhen fourteen of twenty from the floor.
He was the only Warrior that madeany threes in that game. Can you
believe that there's an NBA game theWarriors only made two threes and he was
two for three from three point rangeand hit eleven of his thirteen foul shots
for a career high forty one points. Who was that game against? And
(55:22):
here's a hint, the team nolonger exists. So if you can answer
any of those, we're gonna takesome kits for you for the Save Mart
Center Saturday night. Seven o'clock iswin. It'll all tip off. Coach
Mark Q. Jones will be therewith me. Six thirty is when our
pregame coverage will start. And ifyou are a Fresno State basketball alum,
if if you've ever played for theDogs, they want you back. It's
(55:45):
alumni night, so there'll be someother Bulldogs in the house. Orlando Robinson
is going to be there. It'sgoing to go talk to the guys that
he used to play with, stilla couple of his teammates on this team,
Southpaw. He's going to be backat his alma mater. And I
know several more who made a lotof memories for Bulldog fans over all the
(56:05):
years. They're going to be theirSaturday at the Save Mart Center, and
we hope to see you there aswell. This is the only chance you
have, the only time that you'regoing to see Rod Higgins number twenty two
retired and he and his wife ofthirty nine years are going to be there.
You know, their son, Coreyis still playing professionally in Europe,
but he's trying to make it backfor this mentioned Rod Higgins at Fresno State's
(56:28):
all time consecutive foul shot made recordof twenty eight in a row. There
have been a couple of dogs who'vecome close to beating that nobody has.
But do you know his son Coreyhas the record at the University of Colorado
for consecutive free throws forty five ina row. So Rod Higgins is not
the best free throw shooter in hisfamily. Maybe we should have had him
a basketball and see if he wantsto continue his streak at the Save Mart
(56:51):
Center on Saturday night when that gametips off at seven o'clock. We're almost
out of time here at Crowing WolfTonight again next week you can here Wednesday
night from six to seven for baseball, Thursday night from six to seven for
a women's basketball show, and we'llcontinue with baseball and softball shows throughout the
rest of the school year. TheDiamond Dogs at cal State Fullerton this weekend.
(57:14):
Softball is finally going to hit theroad after playing eleven straight at home
to start the year, and thewater polo team is certainly on fire as
well, ranked number three in thebut the Dogs can pull the upset as
(57:37):
shorthanded as they may be. Ifyou missed the beating for the show,
or at least the earlier half ofthe show, Coach Hudson, they clarify
Isaac Harris, the freshman is tovisit two names for that bereavement. He
is back with the team. He'sone of the few Dogs who's one hundred
(57:57):
percent healthy, and we'll see whathe can do against the San Diego State
Aztecs on Saturday, so we'll continuehis scheek. You know, he's been
a three pointer in twenty consecutive games. He's the last couple of weeks,
we'll see if he dogs in it. And the senior point guard a Zenda
Hill now twenty four assists from becomingonly the third Bulldog in school history for
(58:22):
five hundred in that department seven o'clocktip in the same mart Center Saturday night.
We'll look forward to seeing you then. Thanks to our engineer here,
Eric Auslin for his help tonight andRyan Westernberg on the board at our iHeart
Studios. We'll see at the arenaSaturday, Rod Higgins number twenty two going
to the rafters and we would loveto have you there for it. That's
