(01:04):
alums at Proper Defense make sure youhave all you need to win at your
case. Coach Hite alongside Mountain West. Play has just begun. I've already
played four games, so kind offill in everybody what's going on so far
in conference. But yeah, wellwe started out with a good win against
air Force at home, and it'sit's playing out to be a really good
(01:25):
win because air Force is doing goodknocking some people off. And then another
win at It's funny, I forgetthe wins, but I sure know a
lot San Jose Stay at San JoseStay. Great win for US, win
on the road, obviously, crossvalley rival and a place where we struggle
sometimes. So it was a reallygood win there. Actually had a thirteen
(01:48):
point deficit going into about last fiveminutes and or a fourteen or something like
that anyway, and made a thirteenand one run and won the game,
so that was nice. And inwe headed down to San Diego State for
a game on national television. Reallygreat to be picked for one of those
games, and you know it,it ended up being a close game.
(02:12):
We uh, we struggle a littlebit in the middle. Uh San Diego
State. What we're finding is we'replaying a lot of fifth year seniors,
sixt year seniors. We're playing alot of older upper classmen, and we
are still really young and really new, so you know, we're getting we're
getting our our work cut out forus. But we're excited to play Utah
(02:36):
State. Then we came home.We played Colorado State on Wednesday and uh
ended up winning, losing by six, but made a run towards the end
and just uh, you know again, we're we're coming up short in the
third quarter mostly and then we're closingit. So if we could fix that
(02:57):
third quarter, that'd be great andwe'd we'd be able to close out and
wins with both those games. Soyou know, our kids are young and
again inexperienced, but I think excitedand energetic and you know, ready for
whatever the conference season brings. Andtomorrow are not tomorrow, but Saturday.
(03:20):
We'll play Utah State. That gamesat two o'clock, yep, and another
really good game. The girls willdo autographs after the game, so we're
excited about that. Well, let'shighlight some of the things that you guys
have been doing well in conference play. Your top five and a few statistical
categories. Three point shooting. That'sa big improvement from the last couple of
seasons for you guys, you've gotreally you've got about four different players that
can shoot the three ball really well. You guys come in thirty five percent,
(03:44):
your top five in that category goinginto yesterday, you're actually third in
conference and three point shooting. Socoach talks to me, what's shooting like
in practice? Yeah, you know, I think not only does our perimeter
shoot the three well, but ourfours and five shoot as good as anybody.
Really hard to guard to a fivethat can step out like Sid Detman
that could step out and shoot thethree. Uh, Mia Jacob's we've seen
(04:09):
what she can do as as shehas on occasion with a couple of different
games. And then also in thatArizona State game where she had thirty points
and uh, you know Kylie Foxx. Uh, you know who's shooting it
really well right now is Keey Brown. She's actually statistically the best three point
shooter on the team. Yeah.Yeah, she has really been working on
(04:29):
her shot. It's real nice,it's real soft, you know, it's
real, it's real pretty. Anduh, you know she's she's been money
from that left side corner, yes, right in front of the other.
So it's been it's been fun tosee her grow and develop and and uh,
obviously we we like to say thatwe develop players, and and that
(04:53):
that's something that we will, youknow, that we like to do with
our incoming kids, our freshman kids. But Keiley now going into her we
can call it third slash fourth year, she's really developed that part of her
game and that's been really helpful forus. Yeah, coach, you're talking
about developing players. I just thinkback yet Candice Whites of the World.
(05:15):
You had a couple of player ofthe years that you developed in Matty Udie
and Hailey Cavender. Just what isit about your style that when you get
a kid that as they progress throughyour program they get so much better?
Well, I think, what theMaybe it's the way we play. We're
able to you know, we doa little bit of his own, a
little bit of man offensively, wecan transition. We pull lots of different
(05:41):
players out, we play different typesof lineups, small lineups, big lineups.
I think we're very diverse in thatway, and I think when you
play in that type of a system, you're bound to get better. The
other thing is just the commitment toindividual workouts, individual shooting, individual you
know, and now we actually getto work with our players all summer,
(06:01):
and so that's even a bigger benefitfor them and for us is to be
able to have them and develop certainskills that we're looking for within the offense.
We'll talk about another statistical category whereyou guys are very good at it.
How about turnover margin. The lastcouple of games, you just haven't
turned the basketball over at all,and you're doing a good job. You
are in the hugely positive you're plusfour and a half in the differential between
(06:25):
you guys turning it over and thenforcing turnovers. What do you think is
the real key, because this isa team that's been overall pretty good at
taking care of the basketball. Yeah, I mean I would say it starts
with our point guard Taja Santa Maria, Yes, and then it kind of,
you know, leaks out into ourother perimeters. Diagenay, who you're
(06:46):
going to talk to a little bitlater. She can take care of the
ball, can help break the press, sees the floor really well. And
then you know everybody, everybody withinthe offense is moving well. They're moving
to the ball there, you know, with pace and and I think too,
we play well together and that isone thing that when you know a
(07:09):
kid's gonna cut and you're able tomake those passes, or you know somebody's
gonna be behind you on a feelbehind, it just gives you a lot
more confidence. And and it helpsyou be a little more aggressive to take
care of the ball. And andand you know the cys too, uh,
you know, to be able toto you gotta you gotta dare to
(07:30):
make those passes sometimes. And Ithink our kids just just really trust each
other. One thing I wanted toask you about with conferences play because they've
changed up to schedule. You usedto be Thursday Saturday. Now you're Wednesday
Saturday. Do you like that better? As a coach having an extra day
to prepare for that Saturday game? You know, I did not like it.
(07:50):
The The Thursday Saturday was just tooquick. We'd done Wednesday Saturday forever
and so that was uh, somethingwe were used to. It also gave
you another day of preparation. Forexample, today we went half court on
most everything, and then tomorrow we'regonna go more full court and just not
(08:11):
not necessarily for a long amount oftime, but enough to feel what the
game is gonna feel like it givesthe coaches a whole day to prepare.
You know, I don't I don'twatch both games. At the beginning of
the week, I watched one gameat a time. I'm only capable of
one game at a time, andso uh, and so it gives us
the opportunity, like today, fora couple hours, coaches sat and did
(08:33):
did film on Utast eight, andthen the players will get to do it
tomorrow and then we'll be able toplay on Saturday. So it is a
good system that we have, andit does give our our players also a
break. And that was what wewere running into and we were going Thursday
Saturday. We were exhausted, notonly physically but mentally. And then I
(08:56):
just didn't think that was And andour travel, Yeah, so you know
it's different if we're you know, going across town and playing like you know,
Clovis West, Clovis North, that'sdifferent. But if you're having to
get on a flight, fly toboys, try to get back and you're
always taking two flights everywhere you go, I mean, it is it is
just really hard. I did notthink it was what was best for our
(09:20):
student athletes, and neither did anycoach in our league and so and I
would I would say that our administratorsand even all the way up to the
presidents did not realize what an impactthat was going to be on our student
athletes. Yeah, definitely. Thisis the Bulldog Basketball Hour. We're at
Crow and Wolf. Stay with us. We've got a couple of athletes to
talk about when we come back. You're listening to Bulldogs Women's basketball Fromlear Field

to UM five twenty six Bruce Avenuein Blowbitch. It is the Bulldog Basketball
Hour presented by Proper Defense Law.I'm at normal talking with Fresno State women's
basketball head coach Jamie Whites. We'vegot a couple of student as plates and
joh Harvey and Beatta Jata alongside.Welcome guys to Cronwolf. Thank you.
(13:07):
Let's start off with Joe. You'vegot an interesting story. We're going to
go into both of your stories becauseboth of you guys have an interesting background.
But John, talk to me aboutyours. You're from San Diego,
California. You were a two timeAll American, you were a two time
CCCA Southern California Player of the Year. But then also you are an active
military member as well, So justgive us background about who you are and
(13:31):
how you chose to be a partof the military while you're playing hoops.
Oh Man, straight out of highschool, I tried to play at the
Jucoe that I actually played for previouslytwo but it just ended up not working
out. It wasn't the right timefor me to continue basketball at that time.
But I found opportunity at school actually, and it was just like join
(13:54):
the Army National Guard. You seethose posts a lot, but I kind
of took it serious, kind ofjust trying to figure out where I was
supposed to, you know, endup in life, just trying to take
a different route. So I endedup joining the Army National Guard a few
years after high school and then justbeing active Army National Guard. I kind
of missed playing, so I justit was like five six years after the
(14:16):
fact, and I was just like, I should probably try to play,
and like kind of just missed thatside of me. I kind of missed
being, you know, waking upearly, having to go to practice,
having to show for teammates, andbeing in that environment. So I kind
of just packed up everything and movedback to California because I was living in
Louisiana at the time. So Ipacked up everything and moved back to California,
(14:37):
just hoping and praying that I couldlike you know, continue on as
long as possible with basketball and mycoaches from my jew COO straight out of
high school kind of like open armsand welcomed me back. So I had
the opportunity to kind of just playfor them, and I just kind of
gave it my all just to seewhere it could take me, and I
ended up here. So that's agreat story. We're going to follow up
(14:58):
with that to still since you're anactive military I remember you still have to
actually still do military stuff while theseason's going on. You missed actually the
cal Poly games to go to SanDiego to So what's that Like, what's
a typical weekend like when you dothat. It's a little difficult just trying
to find a balance. Like Isaid, I've been actively in the Army
National Guard while I've been playing, like even in my juco. But now
(15:22):
being that everything's so like it's kindof scheduled ahead of time, it makes
it a little bit easier for meto kind of adjust with both schedules because
they are both priorities to me.So I'm just you know, it kind
of just works for me. Andjust having an open line of communication with
our coaching staff and then my higherups with the within the military, it
(15:43):
kind of makes it easier on mejust knowing that they can rely on me
to communicate and I could rely onthem to you know, be leaning in
that aspect and where I'm not takenaway from basketball and I'm not taken away
from the military as well. Soit's kind of working out now that I've
adjusted to my scheduling that's going on. And so let's talk to you,
Okay, So you've got You've donea nice little story with you. You're
(16:04):
obviously from Sally, Senegal. Youplayed here, you were an outstanding community
college basketball player. You came toProsno State. But let's talk about twenty
nineteen. You're part of the NBAseventeenth annual Basketball Without Borders Africa Camp,
which you were the MVP of aswell, and you've also played. You've
got dual citizenships, so you actuallycompeted the twenty twenty feet but you eighteen
(16:25):
African Championships. So give me alittle bit about your background, your family
while you're a hooper, because obviouslyyou can play the game. Yeah,
So obviously I come from a familyof basketball players. My mom played,
my dad played, and my auntsplayed. My mom played professionally and my
aunt played out ruggers, like theyall played basketball, so I kind of
had some guidance going into the wholebasketball thing. It was never really like
oh I want to try this newthing. It's not new, right right
(16:48):
right, But yeah, so sothat I know that created a lot of
opportunities and it was just it wasgreat having them just guide me throughout the
whole process and every time like anopportunity arose, they kind of like gave
me some advice and like guidance asto how I should posied with it.
And also just like now my experiencewith college basketball and everything, my mom
kind of walks me through everything whatto expect and like how to you know,
(17:12):
go about certain things. And soit's been great. But yeah,
they obviously present lots of opportunities.Like you said, I played in Egypt
for my U eighteen team and thatwas so much fun. I'm actually very
excited because there's there's gonna be upcomingcompetitions pretty soon, and yeah, I'm
looking forward to participating in those.Coach talking about these two because obviously well
(17:33):
spoken, they've got a great storiesas well, hard workers. But you
how what made you recruit jaw andVinza? Well, I'll start with jaw
we heard through the grapevind how greatshe was and and we saw her stats
as she was putting up phenomenal thenand her junior college ranks, and then
coach Mandy and Coach Shannon and Iall headed over to the Final Four when
(17:57):
when Jo's team was in it tosee if we'd really believe what everybody was
saying. And and we did.I mean, when I walked out of
there that first night, she almosthad a quadruple double and and you know,
you knew that that was gonna relateto our game and and just her
her physical presence, her her athleticism. Uh, she was really a calm
(18:21):
staple for her team, which sheis actually for ours also, and we're
just really excited about her. Andthen I think, you know, coach
Shannon really kind of you know, was took the lead in her recruitment and
really talked to her coach and gotto have a good relationship with her.
And I think, you know, when when we kind of put our cards
(18:42):
out on the table, I thinkJah wanted to just kind of test herself
and challenge herself to the next level, and and that she has and she's
done a great job. She brokeinto the starting lineup the other day,
and it's just been been really helpful, especially in our wins. Both these
guys have been very helpful in ourwins, just bring a different level of
(19:03):
physicality and athleticism with with with Banta, you would you would know this name,
Alex Ferru coach her her first juniorcollege and Alex since then has moved
on. But she called us onher and and we were able to watch
her. I know, coach Mandywas was really the lead on that recruitment
(19:26):
and watched her play and we reallyfelt like she fit into a couple different
situations as far as offense and thendefensively. I think really her her focus
is on rebounding, which is great, and her her ability to run the
floor and offensive rebound has really reallyhelped us and it really creates a problem
(19:47):
for other teams having to having tomatch that. So it's been it's been
great to have both of them. They're great students and very committed to not
only the game, but to theirteammates and and to be and you know,
doing the right thing and being goodpeople. And that's that means a
lot to us too. For youtoo, talk to me about the transition
(20:08):
from JC to playing the Division onebasketball. What's it been like for you
guys? Obviously been very as youmentioned integral parts of the winds. I
think at San Jose State, bothof you guys were huge factors in why
you guys got the dub. Butwhat's it been like, you know,
first season, meet new teammates andplaying ball at this level. Oh,
I guess I'll go for the transition. I feel like is different in the
(20:32):
sense that you get people from allwalks of life, which is kind of
similar to the military. So Ifeel like I adjusted well, but I
didn't expect it as much as playingJUCO. I feel like everyone was kind
of from California, kind of fromthe general area. I'm from North County,
North County, San Diego, sopeople probably went to high school there
or have lived there or heard aboutPalomar from somewhere else in California. Whereas
(20:56):
now like dealing with people from differentcultures and different parts of the world.
Literally, I feel like it's it. I feel like it's growing my aspect
of life in a sense, likeI feel like I'm adjusting to them and
taking that off the court to wherelike I'm learning to communicate with different people.
I'm learning to you know, justbe you know, emostly available to
(21:18):
different types of people. I feellike it's actually helping me, especially because
I'm older, so I'm like,I'm kind of tuned in with myself a
little bit more than you know,an eighteen year old probably, but I
feel like it's really helping me inthat sense. And I feel like just
playing and just understanding them more,I feel like it allows us to be
better on and off the court. So I feel like the adjustment is was
(21:41):
just understanding that they're from different partsof the world and everyone is not gonna
see eye to eye. And Ifeel like, even with our coaching staff,
I feel like because they're all kindof different in their own unique way,
I feel like that's why we're soit's scary how good we could be,
right, and I feel like we'retaking each step towards that. So
(22:03):
I'm excited. I feel like theadjustment it just only means that we can
be so successful. So what aboutyou? Yeah, For me, I
think the transition it's been it's beenvery exciting, I think, especially thinking
back now. I'm here right now, but thinking back to when I was
in junior college, my first year, my second year, everything that was
on my mind. It was justI want to go a place you want,
I want to go, and I'mthinking about the next step always.
(22:25):
But I think the whole process ofit has been really great and very unique.
It's a very unique experience. Obviously, in my first year, I
was in a very small town.Everything was very isolated, and everything's all
day. It was just basketball school, basketball school, basketball school. And
then my second year I transferred toWaco, and that was the experience in
itself, just with like dealing withdifferent types of teammates and everything. But
I feel like that kind of gotme ready for right now, where it's
(22:48):
a very different sort of environment.Everything's very structured, there's lots of everything's
just stuff stepping from stuff right afterthe other, you know, And so
I think that's just been it's been. It's been different, it's been unique,
and I've kind of come to enjoyit. At first, it was
just a lot of you know, this time commitments and then loss of obligations.
But I've come to really enjoy theprocess and I'm kind of enjoying the
(23:10):
grind as we're coming along in ourseason. So yeah, this is the

(26:30):
We're in Clovis. I'm at Normaltalking with Fresno State head coach Jamie White's
a couple of student athletes, JohnHarvey and Vita Jata as well. I
said student athletes, and that meanswe have to talk a little education guys.
So Joe, imagine, hey,you know what you're gonna do.
Bets, I imagine you know whatyou're gonna do. So this let us
know. What's so job? What'syour major and why did you come to
(26:52):
that decision? What are you tryingto do with it. I'm currently majoring
in sociology. I came to termswith it because I I had taken a
few sociology classes at my junior collegeand that seemed to be the one of
the courses well, one of likethe the course selections that kind of I
feel passionate towards. I feel likeI feel differently when I'm studying sociology because
(27:18):
it's about how people respond to society. I feel like everything relates to society
in some way, shape or form. So I feel like that's why I'm
passionate about it, and I feellike that's why I want to kind of
figure out what I want to dowith it as a career choice. So
that's good. Yeah, So I'mcurrently majoring in computer science and I kind
(27:38):
of I didn't start in computer science. I started mechanical engineering, but I
yeah, it was right, that'sright. No, but I started mechanical
engineering, and in my second yearI kind of started to lean towards the
more coding software aside of it ratherthan the hardware. I had taken a
like an engineering programming class and thatkind of opened up the doors and so
(28:00):
this that was in the spring,So I kind of spent the summer learning
all about like the technical aspects ofsoftware engineering and everything related to that,
like coding and stuff, and Ikind of just fell in love with it
very quickly, and so I shiftedmy focus to computer science given that that's
the path that most people take thatwho want to be like software engineers.
So that's what I did, andthat's kind of my goal and eventually I
(28:22):
want to work as a full secondengineer. Wow. So, coach,
we've had a few of your athletescome up here and every single one is
so smart. So is this thesmartest team you've got? I mean,
like academically you don't even have toworry about it. Yeah. Actually,
we just got the highest GPA we'veever had. And we've always had a
high GPA at three point five tofour and we had eight kids get four
(28:45):
point out yea. So absolutely nothingto do with me, ok No.
Our academic advisors on it. Hisname is Jordan, it's his birthday today,
so but he he's done a reallygood job to make sure our players
are in the classes and or outof the classes that they need to be.
(29:08):
And he talks to the teachers ifwe need that, he helps with
them missing class. He sets uptutors, he sets up reading labs and
all the labs that we need, and he you know, he's passionate and
he really believes in our players andand really works hard to help them be
successful. So we also have coachJasmine Jazz Redman on our camp, on
(29:30):
our staff that oversees academics. Andthen each coach actually has a group of
kids that they oversee with academics, just checks in with them, make sure
they're doing okay. I really believethat it is about being smart, although
it's really about being prepared and makingsure you're you're addressing things in a timely
(29:52):
manner. And then we have somany resources, you know, at Fresno
State to help our student athletes besuccess, so we just have to make
sure we take advantage of that. She talked about time, So what's it
been like for you guys with youknow, basketball academics and you obviously military
at top of that, how youmanaged to get a set schedule and have
time maybe for some free time andhaving some thought. Oh my, I
(30:15):
have like four planners for like everyeverything. I write down everything maybe two
to three times, like a week. I have like chalk I have a
chalkboard, a whiteboard, and likethree planners legit. Yeah, just so
I can, like you know, manage my time. And I'm very forgetful,
Like my memory is terrible. Iblame that on social media, but
(30:37):
I feel like just writing things downmakes it a little bit easier. And
then you know, we have likeour scheduling for basketball as well, which
is very helpful because I would probablynot be on time to anything if it
wasn't for having things planned out andit's like weekly, monthly scheduled ahead.
So I feel like that helps alot, just being on top of it
in that way. But yeah,I have to write everything down. Yeah
(30:57):
you're not new to this. Ikind of do the whole like planning thing
and everything. I know, likewhen I got here, everybody kept telling
me, like, time management isgoing to be your like number one thing,
number one thing, and I kindof underestimated it until I got here.
And obviously, you know, Igot off to a little bit of
bumpy start in my contest, youknow, but I think with the help
of the coaches and like helping meget everything planned out. I obviously I
(31:21):
meet with one of my coaches everyweek. We write down everything I have
throughout the week so that nothing surprisesme really, and so that's been really
really helpful this semester. Yeah, but you meet with coach Courtney, right,
Coach Courtney, She's very helpful, and it's been it's been great,
Like seeing that it really made areally big difference. It made a really
big difference. Coach talk to meabout the newcomers when they come in,
(31:41):
you know, new to the program, about time management and scheduling and early
on. So obviously where they arenow, they're they're used to it,
they've gone through a semester of it, but the first couple of months got
to be a little tricky. Yeah, I mean, number one, first
off, our our culture and ourphilosophy from actually us playing and maybe not
(32:04):
having it or having it and beingsuccessful with it or not being successful with
it. So really our philosophy camefrom you know, six different coaches bringing
their expertise and their their thoughts andeverything. And then you know, the
preparedness and the organization I just thinkare our key when when So when here's
(32:25):
the thing. When a freshman comesin, they they're coming from their parents,
so they kind of have that alittle bit of guidance. Right when
our junior college kids come in,they've been on their own from it,
and they've created their own paths andtheir own habits. Yeah, and so
(32:46):
sometimes those are the kids or atransfer that have to readjust a little bit
more than some of the freshmen. Now, as the freshmen you know,
develop and stuff, then they theyget their own plan. But for the
moment fart, if we can allstay you know, at least on a
couple different pages and move forward,we're good to go. Any kid that
(33:07):
we're recruiting really wants to be successful. Any Division one athlete probably wants to
be successful. And so that's reallywhat we're selling is, Hey, this
is going to be the easiest foryou to really focus on these areas school
and basketball and be organized in thoseareas, and that that will allow you
to have some free time and allowyou to have some fun outside of all
(33:30):
these areas. And and really, you know, there's still eighteen to twenty
something years old, and they andeverybody wants that. Everybody wants that.
Everyone wants to be organized and havefun and feel like they're getting better every
day. Talk to me, guysabout your free time. When you do
get free time, what is itthat you like to do, maybe in
(33:51):
present or just maybe on campus.Oh man, I like to eat right
by myself, like night and day, like to just there's actually some cool
places in Presno. Even though peopleassume that there's not much to do in
Fresno, there's so much to doin Presco. There's a lot to do.
I actually went to an underground gardennot too long ago. It's like
(34:13):
forest year. It's like a undergroundgarden. Highly recommend it number ten.
But I feel like I just eat, sleep, like just repeat NonStop.
But when I do, like findtime to like relax, I try to
do so or like just that's whenI choose to talk to my family or
I catch up with with people andmy support group, just to just to
(34:35):
keep them updated with life. Yeah, for me, I definitely say that
any pretime I have, it's alwayslike doing relaxing things. I like to
read a lot. I like totalk to my sister and when I can,
and my brother as well. Butyeah, it's definitely talking to family
and sort of just letting my mindrest a little bit because it's been running
all day and stuff. So yeah, it's definitely not Did we talk about
(34:58):
being having h being a triplet?Oh yeah, we haven't got to that.
Yeah, let's not go right allright, tell you you're one of
three, so talk to me.Yes, I have one of three.
I have one sister and one brother. We are twenty right now. I
got to be twenty one in April. Yeah, and I've been living away
(35:19):
from them since I was like sixteenor so. But yeah, we have
great memories together when we were togetherback at Senegal, of course, and
I get to see them every oncein a while. Like my sister,
I think she's planning on coming outhere pretty soon. She's been deployed for
a minute, but she's finally backand I'm very excited to see her.
Yeah, that's cool. Yeah, one of three. What's it like,
Uh, you know you guys supersuper close. Oh yeah, we're very
(35:40):
very close. Yeah, there's it'slike a special bond really, like you
could we've been apart for so long, but it's like we're so tight.
But yeah, we're very close andnothing can really take us apart at all.
Family and friends are important to talkto me. Guys, when you
when you go into an arena andyou see a friend or a family member
that's going to watch you play, what's your feelings like, Because I know
it's it's tricky at times sometimes whenthey're not at every single game, and
(36:04):
all of a sudden, you're like, they're gonna be at this one.
So what's it like for you too? When I see when I see somebody
like a familiar face in the crowd, I feel like I better play the
best. They're gonna mess about me. They're like, they're gonna tell everybody
that I'm not what I'm all crackedup to me exactly. Sometimes you know
it makes me. It makes mesuper happy though. I mean even when
my family and my my close friendsaren't able to go, I feel like
(36:28):
even seeing familiar faces like someone,Like even the kids who come to our
games, I feel like seeing thosefamiliar faces, they're like number fifty,
Like they have no idea how tosay my first day, They're like number
fifty, like I love you,and I'm like I just had the worst
game ever. But seeing them andknowing that they're consistently there and like clapping
for me and stuff, I feellike that just makes it all worth it.
Like whether it's a good game ora bad game, I feel like
(36:49):
just seeing that familiar faces, seeingfamiliar faces in the crowd just makes it
all worth it. Yeah, andobviously I'm not from this area, so
I don't have a lot of myfamily's not here a lot of the time.
But when I do have friends orfamily come in, it's always like
I'm even more motivated to perform. And just like even if I don't do
my best, like I know thatthey're they're supporting me and everything. And
obviously the fans here that kind offills that that gap a little bit,
(37:14):
knowing that they're always here to supportme, Like I have my locker sponsors
Wes and Linda Quails and who arealways here to support me, Like even
after every game I go up giveher a hug, and it just it's
great. And if my family's nothere, they're probably watching online and they're
like nine hours ahead. My mom'snine hours ahead and she's up watching it
and she's like texting me in thewhatsapper chat like every She's like, do
(37:34):
this is I'm like, no,I can't see this. I'm in the
game. But no, it's great. It's a great feeling seeing those messages
afterwards, knowing that they're watching. So it's funny that you mentioned WhatsApp.
But my sister lives in Madrid. She's lived there for about ten years,
and I had never heard of WhatsApptill she moved over overseas And that's all.
But talk to me about the lockersponsors. We talked about it last
time. But how important that isfor the program? Coach? Oh yeah,
(37:59):
you're asking them well, And numberone, they support us at so
many levels. Obviously financially, theythey're able to donate to our program,
and then they also have a specialrelationship with their player that they sponsor,
So any event that we go towith them will will pair them up and
(38:20):
they'll be able to sit with themand eat with them and talk to them.
Obviously when they come to a gamethey are watching they have the sign
for their for their kid, andand it's just it's it's really fun and
it builds that family environment that we'rereally looking for and that our players need
when they are so far away fromhome, whether they're from San Diego or
(38:45):
Senegal or you know, it justhelps to have that familiar face. And
our Lacker sponsors they love them. They you know, they want to support
them, they want to help them, and they want to cheer for them.
And I think that's just really specialand hopefully it helps our girls feel
like they have family away from awayfrom home. That's very important. This

Defense Law. I'm Matt Orble talkingwith Fresno State Women's basketball at coach Jamie
(42:28):
White and a couple of student athletesin Jah Harvey and Vita Jata. As
we wrap up with the student athletesbefore we get to them, Coach,
you guys are doing something in Februaryevery Sunday for the kids. What is
it? Yeah, we are. This is the first year we're doing a
skill development. We've had a lotof coaches ask about you know, what's
what's out there for young kids, and you know, the schools have it
(42:51):
for a certain amount of time, but then it's over. And so we
decided to put a clinic together. And we're going to have a clinic every
Sunday in February from eleven am totwelve pm at North Gym, and our
players are going to help with it. Our coaches are going to be there
for grades first first grade through theeighth grade and just really try to develop
the basketball in our area and giveback to to the to the community.
(43:16):
It is our favorite thing to helpwith young kids and and to be around
them and give them role models andand so it's it's going to be really
special. I'm excited about it.And how do they get if they have
to sign up or can they justshow up? Yah? Think they can
get online at Jamie White Jamie WhiteWomen's basketball Camps and or on our website
(43:38):
and then you can just go rightto it and it'll be the skill development
one on February and all the Sundaysand you just sign up right there and
we're good to go. That soundslike it's gonna be a lot of fun.
You too, actually work basketball campwith a lot of the young ones
talk to me what it's like obviouslybeing a positive role model, because there's
a lot of young girls out therethat look up to you guys, and
(44:00):
they want to get to where youare. They might want to play some
Division one hoops as well. Sowhat's it like kind of giving back and
working with you. God, it'sthe sociology major part coming out, But
like we talked about, I feellike just giving back to the community,
for one, is a big stepin like growing a community. I feel
(44:21):
like us being present in that mannerfor somebody who might just be trying out
basketball or just doing it just becausetheir friends or their cousins or their brothers
or sisters are doing it can kindof encourage them to, you know,
not even play basketball, but justbe in an environment to where they want
to support somebody else who might playbasketball. So I feel like us being
(44:45):
there and you know, advocating forsmaller kids or boys and girls, because
we had boys and girls at ourcamp, so it's bigger than just us.
And I feel like giving back tosmaller kids and seeing them, like
seeing their faces when we walk inthe gym, like we're like superstars to
them. So I feel like uslike just giving that to them, and
(45:07):
like just giving them, you know, something to look forward to every day
is just is just a miracle tome. And I feel like kids remember
that. I feel like every interaction, even though they're like three or four,
five, six, I feel likethose interactions children remember. So I'm
just happy to be a part ofit. I hadn't worked the camp before,
but I'm very thankful that I didand I got a chance to.
(45:28):
Yeah, definitely, working the campwas very It was a very unique experience.
I've never sort of anything like thatbefore, especially with kids that were
so young, but yeah, itwas. It was so much fun.
It was kind of fun just seeinghow they're their reactions to you know,
them sharing, like us shooing themon and seeing their them doing something correctly,
Like they get so excited about thisthing. It's great. It's great
to see that. But yeah,I love I love working with them.
(45:51):
Obviously. It was just a uniqueexperience and if I kind of if I'm
able to kind of play a rolein them learning to love the game and
becoming better at it, that's whatmakes me happy. So it was great.
You guys gonna be signing autographs afterthe game on Saturday against Utah State.
What's it like signing autographs and someoneup and says, hey, I
want your sick Oh, I haveto make sure my penmanship is like up
(46:14):
to Paul every like consistently. ButI love it. Like I said,
it's it's bigger than basketball at theend of the day. So, like
I said before, like good orbad game, there's a line of kids
who like just love us, AndI feel like that just makes me so
happy, like genuinely like happy, like just to see that it's bigger than
the game. Literally, like youcould, like I said, it probably
(46:36):
had the worst game ever, butthey're like smiling and want to take a
picture with you and like want youto meet their family. I'm like,
this is crazy to me, butlike, its just it's just heartwarming to
see so many people still support you, whether you feel like you didn't play
your best and stuff like that.So yeah, I enjoy it a lot.
Yeah, it's very It's a uniqueexperience. I've never I've never signed
autographs before. That's definitely something newfor me. But it's a great feeling,
(47:00):
like just seeing that kind of supportfor us, Like how do people
support us like that, just sounconditionally, it's like it's only right that
we give back in some sort ofway, whether it's through autographs to like
champs and things like that. Soit's a it's a great feeling. Honestly,
I love having that support. Coach, how is that, you know,
you've got to, obviously, Iimagine, let the players know that,
Hey, you guys are role models. You are pillars of the community,
(47:22):
and there are a lot of youngpeople that come out to watch you
play and they are the superstars. So what's it like just letting people walk
into a situation that maybe they're notused to. Well, I think number
one, our players have to understandyou know, we're we're the show,
and you know we wanna we wantto give back in not only you know,
(47:43):
signing the autographs and shaking hands, but working hard and giving a good
product and preparing you know, forthat moment. And you know, it
took me a while, but after, you know, I've almost been thirty
years coaching, so after about fifteen, I realize we are bringing a lot
(48:04):
of happiness to a lot of people. And whether it's you know, somebody
that's young and admires our players,or it's somebody that's older who doesn't have
a lot to do anymore and theyfollow the team, or it's somebody that
loves basketball, or you know it'sjust or even for our university, representing
(48:25):
our town. All those things areso important, and like Josh said,
they are way above and beyond, you know, basketball. It's bigger than
just you know, putting a ballin a hoop. But it's special too,
and as we do it, wegrow, and so it's yeah,
we want to give back and knowingthat we're growing and we're cultivating a leadership
(48:52):
mentality for the rest of our lives. And I of course as a coach
that's special to me. That's goingto wrap things up with you too.

We wrap things up. It's presentedby a proper Defense Law. We're at
Cohen Wolf five twenty six, BruceAvenue in Clovis. Thanks for joining us
here tonight. I'm Matt Norble talkingwith President State Women's basketball, the coach,
and Jamie White as we get setto close out the show here.
But we want to talk and finishtalking a little Mountain West Conference basketball.
Guys have already played a couple ofgames. When you take a look at
(52:43):
the conference, coach, you've gota team ranked in the top twenty five
and UNLV who's unbeaten, and alsoWyoming who you know very well as well,
they're unbeaten. It's the conference isso much better than it's been the
last few seasons. Just talk aboutthe depth of this conference. Yeah,
I mean we've had, you know, teams that have been ranked not not
only you and LV, and Wyomingdoing well now, but even a Colorado
(53:06):
State who who started with a skidbut is as good as any and has
had a good preseason record. Ido think it's great to see. I
love to see teams knockoff teams.Uh. Boise State beat New Mexico down
at New Mexico. Uh, youknow, San Diego State beat Colorado State
at home. I think it's greatto have the parody in the conference.
(53:30):
And and I do think you knoweven that that that air Force game that
we started with is going to comeback to really I think give us an
advantage in some way. So it'sreally fun, you know, are we
haven't really done a lot of travelingyet. I know our players are going
to be excited. And and anothertransition when you go to a place,
(53:52):
you know, like for example,at San Diego State, you only have
like three players that have ever playedthere before. That's different, and that's
hard, and our players are gettingtougher because of that. But we're going
to go to places like at Wyomingand at Colorado State at the pit in
(54:12):
that place at air Force is oneof the toughest places to play. And
then you know, I feel veryfortunate that we were able to, you
know, go over to San Jose. San Jose's a tough place to play.
In fact, I think you werethere, right, you were there.
Yeah, the fire alarm within andwe were outside. I mean,
(54:34):
thank goodness, it's a warm place, but we were outside, you know,
they were They warmed up for alittle bit and then we had to
go outside and so we had toadd time to to get the rest of
the warm up. But you know, things like that happen a lot,
and you know, you deal withthe weather. It could be freezing,
it could be snowing, it couldbe raining, and it's just you know,
(54:55):
it's part of the the adventure. And honestly, I even talk to
our players tonight about just you knowwhat, let's take one day at a
time. You don't don't think aboutthe next four games, or the next
five games, or the next twomonths. Let's just think about Utah State
and don't worry about it and doone thing at it at a time.
(55:15):
And even like uh Jah and Benhas said, was you know it sometimes
it does. It's so much toschedule. It does help people. Help
to have people to schedule you becauseit gets over overwhelming and school starts next
week, I think, and andI said, guys, right now,
we feel busy and we're not evenin school, and so when this all
(55:38):
starts and we're going to be inschool for the next couple of months,
it does help to take some timeand have a process and have a plan
and you know, just take sometime for themselves and take care of themselves.
All those things add up, anduh, you know, come February,
(55:58):
we want to be rolling. Wedon't want to be you know,
stifled and worried and you know, and behind in school and so really prepared
and organized is important. February tenth, talk to me about that date,
you guys take on un l Vat home. It's another he said,
rally for the valley and that'll bea big game. Yeah, we wanna.
We want to do another, youknow, just rally in the valley
(56:21):
and get as many people out tothe game as we can. Uh.
This is something we're gonna do continually, year after year. Uh U and
LB will be a good game.Uh. Just so one thing is we
only play un LV once. Uh. The second thing is we almost beat
them at their place last year,so we owe them. And the third
(56:42):
thing is there they have a theyhave a nice player in Desi Young,
and I think she's she's you know, she is worth coming out and seeing.
She's she's special in her position andthe way she's rebounding and scores and
and at the same time, we'regonna shut her down, but we do,
we do want you know, it'sgonna be a big game, and
obviously already there at the at thetop of the league, so it'd be
(57:07):
a great game for everybody to comeout and see and support our players,
and hopefully we're gonna do some specialthings that night to have people enjoy their
experience, have a good game.Coach, thanks for the time at the
Bulldog Basketball Hour. We will haveanother one of these in a couple of
weeks a Thursday at January twenty fifth. Bulldogs are back at action this Saturday
(57:29):
when they take on Utah State.Tip off at two o'clock. Our pregame
covers right here on the radio beginsat one point thirty. That's going to
wrap up the Coaches Show from CrollingWolf in five twenty six Spruce Avenue.
Thanks to a couple of our studentathletes, joh Harvey and Pintajata, and
of course head coach Jamie White comingon out, and I'm Matt Normal saying
