Well from Crowing Wolf Cap Room inClovis. Here's your host, the Boys
some the Bulldogs, Paul Leffler, and welcome to Crowlan Wolf five twenty six
Bruce Avenue here in Clovis. I'mMad Norble, the voice of Fresno State
Women's basketball. Is the Bulldog BasketballHour by Proper Defense Law. Proper Defense
Laws. The expert you need inyour legal defense needs big city results with
(00:24):
small town care and attention. Letthe Bulldog alums at Proper Defense to make
sure you have all you need andto win your case. I'm Mad Norville
talking with head coach Jamie White.Got a couple of players here as well
that we'll be chatting with shortly acoach. Last time we were here,
we were talking about how Mountain Westplay just got underway. Now you're a
little over a third of the waythrough. Just kind of talk me through
(00:44):
what's been going on the last coupleof weeks. Yeah, I mean we've
had a great start. We haven'tquite played everybody once yet, so we're
you know, obviously a couple winsunder our belt. We're on a little
bit of a streak right here, though we have had a close one.
We had a close one with Nevadalast week and then we fell to New
Mexico last night. Both of them, we had leads both of them.
(01:08):
You know, opportunities to win.So hopeful. I mean, the road
is hard in the Mountain West, and we've been filling that a little bit.
Although we've given ourselves a chance towin. We've scored pretty well,
as we talked about earlier, butjust on the defensive end, have come
a little bit short. Yeah, let's talk about that for the listening audience.
(01:29):
We were talking about it off theyear. But you guys are a
top three and a few statistical categoriesin the Mountain West. Your team offensive
offensively this season has been outstanding.Your number two win scoring, your averaging
almost sixty nine points a game, your number three and three point shooting in
terms of percentage, your number oneand three point makes you guys make almost
nine threes a game, and yournumber two internover margin. So you guys
(01:53):
don't turn over the basketball and youforce turnovers. You take a look at
those numbers and you stay on theoffensive end. I mean, you guys
are as good as anyone. Yeah, I mean, I think obviously,
to talk to the turnovers. Youknow, we've had an influx of guards,
new guards to our system, toour team. It's been nice that
(02:15):
they've been able to take care ofthe ball, Tajia Santa Maria being one
that's just been able to take careof it, get us into good offense,
which then creates the good scoring. And also I think our transition is
a little bit of a part ofthat. I mean Diagenet, who we
had on the show a little bitago. She's been able to push tempo
(02:36):
and get downhill and do some differentthings. And then I thought we had
some great some great minutes from MalayaLassour at North or Sorry at New Mexico
last night where she was able tojust you know, get downhill, take
people one on one and she hada layup. She had a pull up.
(02:57):
I thought she may have got foundon one layup. I thought for
sure, But you can say thatI can't. But it's just been really,
really fun to see so many differentparts. I think we played eleven
kids last night, to be honest, the last time our team consistently played
you know, eleven kids was along time ago or maybe never. You
(03:23):
know, we've usually played only seveneight kids and one of the things that
I've really liked about our team iswe're very deep, We're very diverse,
different things that we can do andadd and I think that's added to the
offensive end. Yeah, it's kindof continue on the offensive end. And
take a look at last season. We were talking about this. You had
only three games that you scored seventypoints or more and one of them was
(03:45):
against u Seemer said, the otherwas Wyoming in a double overtime, and
then Utah State. You guys havehad more than half your games where you
scored seventy points or more and inthose games, guys are eight three.
So that kind of tells you justwhat you can do offensively. We're going
to talk to me at Jacobs, who's as good as anyone in the Mountain
West Conference. He's a big timeplayer. But you guys got a nice
balance as well. Yeah. Ithink the diversity of different types of players
(04:09):
being able to do different types ofthings causes teams have to guard us in
a multiple of ways. I believeone of the other aspects of that is
just sharing the ball. I thinkour assists are way better than we were
last year, and not only that, but setting up the right kids for
(04:30):
the right situations. And one thingI always tell our players is that this
year's team actually runs offense better thanI mean, I would say maybe in
the last five years. Just executessets, good screens, knows where to
find you know, knows where tofind the flow, knows where the right
(04:53):
shot is, just does a lotof good things in that way. And
it really does start from the transition, starts from the point guard spot.
And it's been nice to have acouple different point guards, different types of
point guards that are able to runthose those spots. Me and Jacobs,
she's, uh, I hate tosay this, but she's somewhat of a
bucket at times. Yeah, no, she is. You know, she
(05:13):
can pop to hit a three.I thought she did a great job of
attacking the basket against New Mexico whenthey when they filled out on her.
She gets out in transition and canget into you know, kind of that
trail spot, got a garter whichopens up the rest of the floor.
You know, it's just really cominginto her own. But if you give
(05:34):
her a little bit of space, she's gonna knock it down. Yeah.
She's actually statistically now just a littlebit better than Kilee from three points.
She said forty one percent. Atforty percent for three, that's that's amazing.
I wanted to kind of talk abouta little bit of it last night
because New Mexico for people that haven'tbeen there, the pit's kind of a
fun atmosphere with the crowd and everything. And for whatever reason, tell people
(05:55):
this all the time when I'm broadcasting. My favorite game to broadcast every year
is when you guys played New Mexicobecause your styles match up and it's such
an entertaining game, usually comes downto the wire. You've won a bunch,
they've won a bunch, and it'sjust a fun basketball game to watch.
And for the neutral yesterday, Ithought it was just an entertaining basketball
game. What's it about when youtake on a team like New Mexico that
(06:17):
that kind of brings out the bestin both teams? Well, I think,
you know, there they are uptempo. They have actually Augment is
from our area, from the BayArea, and we've seen her over the
years. Nice speed is able toget to the rim. I think he
you know, he wants to getto the rim as quickly as he can,
(06:40):
and they did it at times. In fact, that kind of was
our achilles heel at the end ofthe of the day. But you know,
just the ability to get up anddown. I do think they have
some some you know, players thatcan step out and shoot. I thought
Mia had a good match up withRuss and did a good job there.
Also, the pit is one ofmy favorite places, preferably to win,
(07:03):
but it is hard to play there. Their fans are great. They they
boo on que They know what toyell about and and when to cheer and
when to be quiet. They justthey they're very seasoned fans and and that's
that's fun to play in that youknow, you have to walk down the
long ramp. We were counting. This is kind of funny. We were
(07:26):
counting how many times as coaches wehad to go up and down and I
don't come out and tell the game, and then I don't, and then
I go up and down with thehalf court and then out right and uh.
It was funny because the assistants theygo up and down with the girls,
so they they inform me they goup and down about seven times during
the during the game. In fact, I did radio with you because I
(07:47):
didn't want to walk up and thenwalk back down. So I was just
like, you know what, Ithink I'll stay down here and do this.
So but it is a fun placeto play, like I said,
And we had some fans there. There's always a crazy New Mexico fan that
meets me at the top of theramp before we came down. He and
his mom. He's a nice guy, but he always is. He's funny,
(08:09):
he said, I'm He said, you know you're my favorite. You're
my favorite coach besides Stacey and Ryan. So I said, I'll take it.
That is always a fun place tobe. We've got a couple of
players going to be talking to hereat just a couple of moments. I
want to get your thought on thetwo players we're going to talk about.
(08:30):
Not to put her, I don'twant to put her on a spot maybe
embarrass her, but like, honestly, you've coached players of the Year at
the Mountain West Conference and Mea Jacobsjust has that kind of g man she
can play. And then to me, I thought yesterday that was the best
to me has looked since coming backfrom the knee injury. I thought she
showed her experience being used to thatcrowd in that atmosphere, and I thought
she looked good as she kind ofworks her way back, but just kind
(08:52):
of talk to me a little bitabout those two players before we chat with
them after the break. Yeah.Well, so excited to see to me
returning to play. It's been along haul for her and very unfortunate,
you know, when any player getshurt. So excited to have her back.
And then she's not only back, but she is consistently getting into the
(09:13):
lineup and giving us production. Andthat's been really exciting, I think for
her and for us. Last night, you know, everybody wants to play
in front of that crowd and atthe pit, and so I think I
could see that energy and excitement inher, and she came in and really
helped us, did a great job, boxed out real hard, was able
to score plays multiple positions. We'regoing to really be able to put her
(09:37):
into some different situations to be successful. So I'm really excited about that.
Mia has done a great job obviouslythe core of our scoring, and we
also have been able to, alongwith her teammates, put her in situations
where she can be successful. Hergetting her space at the three, and
(10:00):
then I think she's done a reallygood job of continuing to read defenders and
understand how to beat them so theyfly out, she's attacking secondary comes over,
she's able to step through and thenI think I saw she had four
assists last night too. So that'sgoing to be another part of her game
that she's going to develop and we'regoing to help her with as we move
(10:24):
forward, because people are going tokey on her and she's going to be
able to get her teammates wide open. This is the Bulldog Basketball hour.
We are at Curling Wolf in Clovis, So I'll take our first break come

Five twenty six Bruce Avenue Here inKlovis, I'm Matt Norville talking with
head coach Jamie White of women's basketballFresno Stadium. We've got a couple of
athletes as well, Samia Strickland andMia Jacobs who are alongside. We've been
talking to Coach White guys about acouple of statistical categories about how you guys
been doing offensively. Mia, I'mgoing to start with you real quickly.
(14:11):
What do you like about playing inthe style that you guys play? In
because you guys are able to kindof free flow on offense. Yeah.
I think we have a lot offun and we know our roles within the
free flowing pretty much like we knowwhich shots suit ourselves, We know what
(14:31):
shots we should be taking, andwe swinging around. We get to play
really fun, move the ball, really get to play with each other,
which is really nice to me.What about you, because obviously you've been
here a few seasons now, you'veplayed in it before, So what do
you What do you like about thisstyle? I really like recently us playing
five. Oh, I think itreally spreads the core out and especially you
know when we go in a biglineup or small line up, you know
(14:52):
people off to guard Sid Mia meas well. So I think when we
get to screen away, you knowthey gotta make a decision where they're going
to with one of our guards orleave us out for a kick out.
Talk about you to me. Youhad an unfortunate injury last season, missed
all of last season not playing ball, but now you're back to hoop and
yesterday you played twenty minutes, dida nice job at the pit in New
(15:13):
Mexico. Just talk to me.What the grind was like to get yourself
back on the court, and nowthat you're playing again, how you feel.
Yeah, No, it was definitelya journey. Wasn't definitely the ideal
way I wanted to, you know, have have my you know, year
ago. But I think I justyou know, how to be super resilient
and you know, put in thework every single day. So I think
every day I'm like playing, I'mjust grateful that I get to do what
(15:35):
I love because you know, itwas taken away from me last year.
So every day I'm grateful. Maylet's talk about you. You've had five
games of twenty points or more ofthis season. You scored thirty one against
Arizona State. You're top five andscoring top ten and rebounding in the Mountain
West Conference. Just talk to meabout your game for maybe someone that hasn't
seen you play because you're a bigtime player. Yeah. I think I
(15:58):
try and control what I can,so obviously my rebounding and then trying to
see what the defense gives me.So recently it's been the three point er,
but well, at the start ofthe season was driving and then getting
some other bullets kind of get itgoing through that trying to get my teammates
going as well. I think knowingwhen to go, when to pull it
out, when to swing it around. I think being able to post up
(16:22):
as well as go inside out, outside in is really beneficial for me to
coach. Talk to me about coachingthese too. I mean, obviously you
can tell good kids, I meanI know them sorready know that. But
talk to me about what it's likecoaching them and pushing them to just continue
to get better. Yeah, well, it's it's been fun obviously me as
new to our program, and thetransition I think was somewhat seamless. It's
(16:45):
it's kind of fun to be ableto work with her skill set, her
ability to play inside and outside, and there's moments of true physicality that I
love to see. Also, therebounding has been great to have. But
it's been fun to be able toput her in different positions where she can
develop her game, where she canbe successful, where she can really help
(17:06):
the team. But also you know, just looking out and seeing a plan
that we can really work around whatshe has, and that's exciting as a
coach. Obviously, I do thinkif I were to compare her to a
player that we've had. I wouldcompare her to Alex Sheety Alex she was
a player of the Year my firstor second year, and she's also from
(17:29):
Australia, but could play inside andoutside, great form, great shot,
and just led our team like reallynew when to score when we needed a
score, and was capable of doingthat. And so it's been fun to
see the newness now with Tamiya. We knew what she she had when she
came as a freshman. I thinkshe was averaging thirty minutes a game and
(17:52):
was really really a huge part ofour core coming back, and then when
she had her injury, we weresomewhat devastated to a just at that time.
But it's been really great to seeher coming back. And I actually
think she's developed her game and inmultiple ways even more than you know her
freshman year. So we're really excitedabout that these two can work alongside each
(18:15):
other, they can give each giveeach other a break. I think they
really help each other to be successful. I saw them passing to each other
a little high low. So Iam too excited about being able to spread
the floor a little bit and playfive out and me, I'm gonna go
to you here sophomore. He playedlast year at LaSalle. What made you
(18:36):
choose a Fresno State? What madeyou want to come out play for coach
White? Yeah, I think whenI got the text message from coach Shannon
and I was pretty pretty shocked,to be honest. I think before coming
in my freshman year, obviously Ihad a look at a few schools and
I kind of had my eye onthem before even moving or my sisters even
(18:57):
came across. But obviously when Imessaged me, I was pretty excited.
Obviously, the program that they've hadand built throughout the years, a championship
obviously background that really brought me inas well. And then coming on my
visit, the people, the coaches, obviously, the weather it's and then
(19:22):
the style of play is really Ithink that's something that suits me, suits
me really well, and I thinkI found a really really good fit.
Well, I know they're happy tohave you, and we are to me.
I know that was a couple ofseasons ago. But what about you.
What came to your decision? Becauseyou were a player of the Year
in the State of Washington, Talkto me about what made you decide to
come to President State. I woulddefinitely say the coaching staff and you know,
(19:44):
the girls. I feel like theywere really welcoming. And I really
like the you know, small townbut kind of big filling, especially you
know, like a football games that'sa really really fun to go to.
But I would say the community isreally great here. You know, everywhere
you go. You could be ina grocery store and they're like, oh
my gosh, here are you anapplee? Are you one basketball team?
So I think that's really cool theatmosphere. This is the Bulldog Basketball Hour

by Proper Defense Law. I amat Matt Orble talking with the Fresosa women's
(23:27):
basketball coach Jamie White, got acouple of student athletes and Tamia Strickland and
Mia Jacobs before we take a lookand start talking about academics, because we
want to find out obviously what youguys are majoring in, how school going
and all that good stuff. Mehad talked me through last week. A
lot of emotions. You're on theroad, got to play against your older
sister. I know you already didan interview for the Mountain West Network,
(23:47):
but what was it like actually gettingout there having a game, And I
mean you had a game. Youdropped twenty five against your older sister.
So what was it like seeing Claireand playing against her for the first time
in your life. Yeah, itwas kind of cool. Obviously ever done
that before. It's pretty different andjust a new experience. I think going
into it, I didn't. Ididn't really think about it too much.
(24:10):
I think when I get in myhead, it's it's not good, So
I kind of I kind of triednot to think about anything that much when
I am playing, so I didn'treally realize while I was playing that I
was actually playing her. It wasmore so on the bench when I It
was a few times where I likeyelled out or tried to get in their
head. But it was kind ofcool. Obviously, having a good game,
(24:33):
it was kind of nice. Butunfortunately we didn't get the win.
But next time, next time yougot the points, she got the win.
Yeah, hopefully we can get bothnext time. There you go,
Well, they'll be coming to witha Save Art Center coming up later this
season to me and talked me throughwhat it's like playing on the road in
the Mountain West Conference. Is therea gym you like playing obviously besides the
Save Art Center where you kind oflook forward to that arena because Obviously you've
(24:56):
been through, You've seen all theall the gyms. Now is there specific
spot you're like, Man, Ihave a lot of fun when I play
there. Honestly, it's New Mexico. I think it's a great atmosphere.
There's a lot of fans, alot of elders, but I think it's
still I think it's a great atmosphere. They've got a lot of you know,
fans there, so I think Ilove playing there. I haven't been
to Wyoming yet or Colorado State.A few teammates said that they like playing
(25:18):
there, so that'll be interesting, but I would say New Mexico's my favorite.
They had a pay which is whereyou guys were yesterday, and we've
talked about how knowledgeable they are asfans and what it's like, and obviously,
coach, we were able to seewhat Tomia did yesterday coming in giving
you twenty minutes. Yeah, yeah, I thought she did have great energy
and was excited to get in there. I thought she blocks out really hard,
(25:38):
finished shots, made great passes.Just really I think, just a
step in the direction that she wants, that we want and moving forward.
Really great as a coach to beable to start to mix her in to
everything we're doing. All right, let's transition guys to some academics, because
(25:59):
I'm so your student athletes are notathlete students, even though a lot of
us like to believe that's actually whatyou are. Nia Talk to me about
education. What's it been like atFresno State? If you have decided what
your major is and what school's like. Yeah, so I'm a business marketing
major so far, gonna keep itthat way. But it's been really good.
(26:22):
I've had to take a summer anda winter class just to get my
transfer and credits over. But theclasses itself have been really good. I
think the teacher has been amazing.Obviously, the school work has been pretty
good too, which I'm I'm happyabout. But yeah, it's been a
It's really good overall. To me. What about you, it's been it's
(26:42):
been good. I'm an education major. Liberal liberal studies is the term,
but not some people don't know thatalways. I really like it. I
was a biology major wasn't for me, and once I made a transition,
it was great. I've done aninternship over the summer that I was able
to get through Fresno State Athletics Sothat was amazing and I really love where
(27:03):
I'm at and I'm excited for thefuture of that. So what are you
trying to do? You think whenit's all said done, what are you
trying to be? Just a teacher? Like an elementary, middle school,
high school? So I'm going tostart off as an elementary teacher, which
still take a lot of patience, but my end goal is to be a
superintendent. Oh okay, yeah, okay, Mia, What are you trying
to end up with with your degree? I want to do something in sports,
(27:26):
whether it's like a within the sportsmarketing I kind of I want to
guess start getting into photography, sosports photography, mostly basketball, but kind
of add that in and I thinkthat'll grow pretty good with my marketing major.
If not that my own business willhelp my dad out with his coach.
Talk to me about your team,we talk at all the time.
You got such a smart, goodacademic group, but it's also a lot
(27:49):
of variety when you talk to them. Different athletes are doing different things.
So what's it like when you gotto me over there that wants to be
a teacher, and then you gotKeiale Brown doing what she's doing. He
had Jata, who You're like, what in the world are you even doing?
You know, so, what's it? What's it like with all the
different variety on your team. Ithink it's really fun. It is great
to see young kids trying to figureout what they want to study and then
(28:15):
what they want to be and howthose two things work together, and a
hundred percent, almost one hundred percentchange their mind at some point, and
that's okay. I think we havea great support or a system for support
in our in our athletic department.I can't take a lot of credit for
it, but I do think ouradministration does a great job. We have
(28:37):
a girl named Carly who helps ourgirls with resumes and it's the job internships
and and even career testing and differentthings that is so helpful because when you're
young, you just really don't know, and sometimes the wrong things shape you,
such as maybe want to make alot of money or you know,
(29:00):
just don't not realization of time, commitment and different things like that. So
I think our our administration and thedepartment has done a really good job of
giving our kids resources and help forthem to you know, kind of cultivate
that and really make good decisions I'mproud of. To me, I know
she has been on the biology routeand then did a little bit of work,
(29:23):
took the career test, and kindof you know, opened her mind
to some different things. I thinkthe internship helped. And that's another thing
that we love in our community. We have so many people alumni or even
just community members that are so willingto, you know, be open to
some kind of internship for our players, and that's great. It usually happens
(29:45):
over the summer, and it usuallyalso happens kind of between that junior and
senior year, or maybe sophomore andjunior year, so most kids start to
look for those during that time.Yeah's talk to me about time management as
an athlete for you guys. Ihave asked this question every single one that
(30:06):
we've had at the Bulldog Basketball Hour, and it's interesting to hear every one's
perspective of time management. You've gotjob who says she has three planners.
And then I so, so what'sit like for you guys individually with you
to have school in basketball which takeup such a chunk of your life.
Go ahead, miya, Okay,I'm a plan first, So I either
(30:27):
whether it's for the day, I'llplan out what I'm going to do,
or it's on a Sunday night, and I'll plan out my week when everything's
gonna happen, when I'm gonna getmy extra shots up, when I'm going
to do my homework, when I'mkind of going to try and fit everything
in my lone time, when I'mgoing to hang out with people, kind
of just figure it out all onthe Sunday or the day of is really
(30:51):
helpful for planning out when I needto do things and make sure I don't
fall behind or miss anything. Well, to me, I know you've got
a whiteboard because that's what Sid toldme. So, so what about you,
what's it like for you time managementwise? Yeah, I know the
calendar has been a game changer forme. I didn't use in my freshman
year. Wasn't really anything big,and I figured it out. I'm a
(31:11):
big person. I really like tosee things. I'm a visual learner,
So just having it out with theweek sets I can see like when we're
traveling, when we're not traveling, that kind of really helps me writing,
when I have my rehab, whenI have meetings, I think that really
helps me just you know, haveanything under control or I feel like we
get a little stressed out. Ithink another thing that everybody has is we
use TeamWorks. TeamWorks is a greatway for us to see in our rehab
(31:34):
schedule, when we have practice, when we have film, when we're getting
fed that day, which everyone looksforward to. So I think that's another
thing that has been we've been usingthis year, which is TeamWorks. So
I think that's been really helpful forall all of us. Family is important,
obviously, they're sometimes your biggest cheerleaders. Sometimes they're also your biggest critic
at the same time. Ania foryou with your family in Australia, what's
(31:56):
it like time difference wise talking tothem? How much? So are they
able to watch your games? Andwhen are they going to be able to
come over and see you play?Yeah, so Mum, Dad and Amy
are always up for the games,no matter what time, so they always
set their alarm. It's been atprettycent pretty decent times this year with the
fifteen hours instead of twelve, soit's better for our two o'clock games,
(32:20):
so it's only five and issue inthe morning, which is okay. But
yeah, I pretty much talk tothem every day, whether it's on text
or FaceTime, one of those threeor even Claire, she's available. But
yeah, I think being able totalk to them and get their feedback and
positivity and things like that has beenreally helpful. They're hoping to come over
(32:44):
in February for the President of Nevadagame, but a lot of stuff in
the air, so not sure rightnow. But yeah, Samir, what
about you with your family? Youtalk to them often. They watch a
lot of your games. Here. Are they able to make it down and
see you play? What about that? Yeah? We tried to come down
probably every once every month just tocome down and see me. They like
coming to home games. They're realspot where they like to go, do
(33:07):
to stay and get everything like that. I love. I probably talked to
them every other day. It's reallygood just to hear their voices. I
think just hearing their support and loveis probably the best you could ever get.
So, Coach, how important isit you hear coach all the time
talk about hey are teams of family, because obviously they're away from their actual
families. How important is it forthem to actually have family time with their
(33:28):
families? Oh? Yeah, Ithink it's really really important. It's too
bad we don't have more of it, because it is. It is really
hard. And I think for ourkids when they're when their families come that
you know, because they're they're onright, they're playing, they're practicing,
they're getting rehab, they have ahave to list and you know, and
(33:49):
then family shows up and that's kindof it's hard to fit it in,
although I know they're grateful for it, and and we are too. We
have great we have great parents,we have great families. Obviously, we
have great kids and they came fromgreat parents and families, and so we
we love for that to happen. It's just it's it's still the season is
going, and I know they alwayswant to do so well when their families
(34:12):
are here, and you know that'sthat's a little bit hard at times to
just turn it on like that, but you know, families just want to
support them and be around them andsee what the environment's like. And I
think that's really fun, especially familiesthat have never been here like me as
mom just came and saw it forthe first time, and you know,
(34:34):
that's kind of fun to see them, Oh, this is where you do
this and this is where you dothis and oh my gosh, look at
the gym and some of those thingsare really funny. And it's also nice
for the families to check in withthe fans. I mean, we have
great fans and great great Hoop Clubmembers and stuff, and so I'm sure
that all the families kind of gethit up by the fans and they want
(34:54):
to always say hi and be supportive. So that's fun. Guys talk to
me about this. The Save MartCenters coaches kind of brought it up with
the fans and to me, andyou've gone through it a few years now,
and me, it's your first time. What's it like playing in the
arena first of all, because it'sdifferent than any other place in the Mountain
West Conference because it's an actual bigtime arena that you're playing it. And
then with the fans the red Wave, what's like to help me? Yeah,
(35:17):
it's pretty exciting. I'm getting tocome play. The fans are awesome.
They're always really positive. Always lovewhen they come and yell my name
and I can hear them. Ilove when we have our our school kids
come. That's always really fun, especially like the young basketball teams. I
think that having them there getting tosee what we do, and then we
(35:42):
do autographs and stuff after we getto physically meet them, have some chats
with them, which is really nice. Kind of feel like a little celebrity
when I'm out there because everyone knowsmy name and it's really cool. What
about you, Tamya, I wouldjust say the unwavering love, like no
matter the when the last, they'restill showing up up, which I think
is we can all appreciate going up. You know, those are true fans,
(36:04):
like you know, they're there throughthe good times at the bad times.
So I think that's super important andI love, you know, seeing
those same fans. So you kindof, like you know said, feel
like a little bit like of acelebrity. So I think that's really cool.
In playing in the atmosphere, Yeah, they definitely show up every game
because where I sit there next tome and they are bo every seat.
Ever, it doesn't matter, theyare there every game. This is the
Bulldog Basketball Hour. Rick Roll andWolf will take a break, We'll come

Snag of Presno State Athletics. That'sa game and welcome back to crowin Wolf
at five twenty six Bruce Avenue inClovis. It's Bulldog Basketball Hour, presented
by Proper Defense Law. We're herefor about another twenty minutes or so.
I'm at Noorable talking with Presno Statewomen's basketball coach Jamie White. I and
(39:49):
a couple of players as well tome, A Strickland who's from Brenton,
Washington, and Mia Jacobs from Perth, Australia. Guys, talk to me
a little bit about your background.Mia, you came from Australia. What
got you into the game of basketballand was it something obviously your your tire
family basically plays, your sisters playand everything as we had a random person
walk up here real quickly. Sotell me how you got into the ball
(40:10):
and why you like it so muchbecause you even mentioned that's something you kind
of want to do when it's allsaid none, Yeah, I think growing
up watching my sisters, we wereall really put into every and any sport
growing up. So we're all inathletics. I played netball, everyone was
in basketball. We played soccer, and I think when my sisters decided that
(40:32):
the basketball was a sport that theywanted to play, I was kind of
like, well, I'm going tofollow that and kind of see how that
would go. Dad played AFL,Mom was netble, so neither of them
really were into basketball. I wasvery grateful that my dad kind of as
soon as we took a pretty goodinterest in basketball, he was like Okay,
(40:54):
let me figure out how this isand help and try and help us
as much as we can. Sonow he's become to good coach himself,
which is sad. Well, Bay'sthree D one athletes, so it pops
to him. But yeah, Ithink growing up being able to have both
my sisters with me, obviously thembeing older, I think I developed a
bit more than they were because Istarted a little earlier. But being able
(41:17):
to play them and play bigger buddiesas I grew up really helps me.
What about you to mea what gotyou into the ball and why do you
like it so much? Kind oflike me out I played all different type
of sports. It was like volleyball, soccer, and basketball probably the main
three. I think it was alittle bit of a process of elimination,
especially being in Washington it rains alot, so soccer was out for me
(41:39):
too much outdoors. I think volleyballwas a little bit slow placed, not
a lot of contact. So thenthen basketball kind of you know, came
into my arms and I fell inlove with it ever since. I think
I really enjoyed it, especially youknow, playing as a team. I
think I really enjoyed that aspect.Especially you know, in being tearing my
(41:59):
ace. I think that kind ofrechanged the game for me of how much
I really love basketball. So ever, since it's kind of been for me,
guys, let's I want to askyou a question about basketball. So,
if someone's never seen you play, how would you describe your game?
I know how I describe your game. Coach knows how she describes a game.
But how do you see yourself whenyou play the game? To me,
a you star on this one,I would say probably, I would
(42:22):
want to say versatile. I wouldsay that I could probably shoot the ball.
And I'm speaking a little bit forme too. I think she's also
very versatile, shoot the ball, able to you know, score inside.
So I would say that that's simpleversatile. Okay, you got to pick
a different word than versatile. Howwould you describe your game? I think
(42:43):
that it's a good one. Iwas literally I think, wow, that's
a tough one, right, Ireally just took the words out of basically,
So I don't let's not give oneword then, just just describe your
game. I think that I'm playthat tries to play every possession, tries
to go off to the bowl.I think being able to rebound helps me
(43:07):
bring other aspects of my game through. So trying to not do it all
but kind of feel the SATs.So try and bring my teammates in.
I think I try and use mysize that I can shoot the ball and
then be able to drive on thoselittle players as well. When I get
a mismatch coach that talk to meabout it. You got two really good
(43:29):
players sit next to you. What'sit like coaching? And you get players
in of all different abilities and yougot to fit them and you sometimes you
have to adjust your system. Sometimesyou got to fit them into your system.
I know that's coaching. But what'sit like when you get players that
they've got a lot of talent, they can play multiple positions. Yeah,
I mean it's it's really everything. It helps with the creativity that we are
able to bring and to and tomanage. I mean, I think it's
(43:53):
really important that all players develop, and I do think our staff and our
program has always developed players. SoI'm really proud of our coaches for that.
They do a lot of that, and I know our players know that
as well, whether they're doing filmor doing shooting and workouts with them.
(44:13):
I think that's really important, youknow. I think, especially for these
two, if I were to givethem a word or a description, I
would say that, to me,is a great leader. She's a great
leader. She's one of our captains. She has a great voice, a
calm voice. I don't think sheever comes at people in any kind of
(44:34):
way, and I think they listenand hear her and they want to do
better for her. I think Miahas a great basketball IQ for the game
and really understands basketball is very competitive. She said to me after a game
that maybe she didn't play the bestthat she wanted to play, but she's
like, you know, I'm gladwe won. Yeah, you know,
(44:55):
and sometimes that's that's you know, but that's also part of the game.
You're not going to have the bestgame every every night in and night out,
but you do what you can tohelp the team win. And so
just really proud of both of themfor what they bring and and also just
their their loyalty and commitment and determinationnot only for their team, but for
(45:16):
Fresno State and and for themselves. It's it's I'm really proud of of what
I've seen so far. Let meask you a question, Guys, it's
not basketball related. But what doyou do in your free time when you're
you're not studying, you're not playingball, So what do you do just
to kind of relax? Is therea show you watch? Is there somewhere
you go maybe in Presno, whatdo you do when you're just relaxing?
(45:37):
To me, I would say,I when we have our off days,
I really like to take advantage of, you know, just being in my
bed. I love. I'm abaker who loves to sleep, so I
love doing that. I think myroommates said, and I try to go
to church on our off days ifwe can, and just you know,
take that time in just you know, to recenter ourselves. But I would
(46:00):
say those are the main too,not karaoke in the freshman freshman year,
that was freshman year. I've grown, We've changed karaoke. He all right,
all right, they do it.They do it here at sometimes.
All right, bea what about you. I'm a big cafe you girl.
(46:22):
I like growing in the cafe, sweating out my weight, whether it's just
like sitting outside, have a littlecoffee, just sit with myself, music,
that type of stuff. Like Isaid before, I'm trying to get
to photography, so a bit moreresearch on that and then I love my
aunts and cross I'm a big, like creative kind of person that whether it's
(46:44):
trying to get my mind out ofbasketball, so trying to scrap book journal
all about stuff that's always important tohave that time away from hoops, which
I always think is important. Well, guys, hey, thanks for spending
some time with us in a chatwith coach for the final segment and it's
painless, see very easy. Thankyou. That's to me a Strickling and
mea Jacobs. Stay with us.We've got more on the Bulldog Basketball Hour.

ninth. That'll be our final women'sbasketball show coming up a little bit more
than a month from now. Weare at five twenty six Bruce Avenue here
in Clovis. I'm Matt Orble talkingwith President State women's basketball coach Jamie White
(50:35):
before the final ten minutes or so. Coach, we wanted to touch on
a couple of games coming up.Obviously you've got Wyoming on Saturday at one
o'clock. But the big one wewere talking about Rally in the Valley on
February tenth, when you guys takeon UNLV, who was top twenty five
in the country. They're now receivingvotes. That'll be a big time game
and another chance for the fans tocome on out and cheering. Yeah,
I mean, that's going to bea really fun game. We have a
(50:58):
lot of giveaways. They are givinga like three pairs of air Pod pros
brand new. They're giving away iPads. They're giving away two iPhones, so
they're gonna do a bunch of giveaways. We also are up to if if
no one hits the half quarter bythe UNLV game, it'll be up to
a three thousand dollars half court shot. Also, the it's kind of rally
(51:22):
in the Valley two point zero, but uh, it's just gonna be really
fun. I think I think we'rehaving like the the hundreds of cheerleaders come
at halftime. Yep. Yeah, yeah, it's cheerleading day, so you
want to come and come and supportthat. But yeah, it's really exciting.
(51:42):
Obviously you and LV has done well. They're the leader in our league
right now. They did just loseto a New Mexico, so hopefully we
can uh give them a run fortheir money and knock them off at our
place. But we need lots offans, so we're really excited about as
many fans coming as possible, loudones preferably. That again is February tenth
(52:02):
at the Save Mart Center. Thatis a Saturday that is rally in the
Valley's at two point zero because thefirst one was against Sacramento State earlier this
year. You got a game comingup against Wyoming on Saturday. That's the
most recent game a place you know, well, another good team. They're
actually tied with you and l Viatop the Mountain West Conference. They've got
a big player inside in for TIG. Just talk to me a little bit
about that game this Saturday. Andit's a doubleheader because the men play after
(52:27):
you guys at four o'clock when theytake on air Force. Yeah, that's
right. Well, Wyoming last yearwe had a double overtime with them.
I should have beaten them. Itold our players we should have beaten them
three times. But you know, they do have a nice player in for
TIG. They've lost a couple oftheir super seniors, so that's going to
(52:49):
allow us to probably get in therea little bit better. I think we
can beat them. I mean,we got to play our game. We've
got to run the floor, shootthe ball well. But really excited about
it. You've got something coming upin a February coach where you're going to
be doing stuff to help basketball playersin the area. It's a skills camp
that begins. Your first one isa Sunday, February fourth, eleven am
(53:12):
to now, talk to me abouthow that came to be and what the
skills camp is all about, Well, you know, we were seeing a
lot of people number one, wantingmore opportunities to develop their skills. Number
two different age groups. Basketball isyear round now and a lot of the
schools are done with their basketball seasonright about the end of January, and
so we are excited to offer youknow, four Sundays an hour each Sunday,
(53:38):
grades one through eight. And we'vehad quite a few sign up,
but we're we're leaving it open andtrying to get as many as we can
because we just really want to wewant to develop the local talent, but
also we want to give some ofthese local kids opportunities to rub shoulders with
our players. Are so are theyaccepting walk ups? So if some one
(54:00):
was not able to sign up,but they want to show up that day,
are you guys accepting it? Andthen how do you sign up?
If you want to sign up online? Yeah, so you would just go
to Jamie White Women's Basketball Camp,Okay, and it is advertised right there.
Yes we are. We are signingup for walk ups. In fact,
even if kids can't make all four, if they come and talk to
(54:23):
us, we'll make sure they canget into however many that they want to
attend. And again I can stressenough just how great it is to be
with kids like Mia and Tamiya andbe able to be around them and use
them for role models. And thenalso just the development of skills, I
mean really ball handling, shooting, like developing skills that are gonna you know,
(54:47):
create habits and be successful over time. And final one for you,
as we're wrapping this one up,we had a couple more minutes talk to
me about You've got a couple ofhome games yet Wyoming Saturday, easy state
to follow, but the Mountain WestConference as a whole, it's got so
much better over the years. Whereyou've got you look at it, it's
so balanced from the top with rightnow you have you know, b and
(55:08):
Wyoming, but everything is so buncheda lot to be decided still in conference.
Just how far this conference has comein women's basketball. Yeah, I
agree. You know, we amgoing on my tenth year, so I've
seen it all. We've lots oflots of competitive teams that you know,
over time it grows. One andnumber two, I think Mountain West has
(55:32):
done a really good job to supporttheir women's basketball and put them maybe in
the limelight a little bit more orkey games. This year, we had
five games in the Mountain West ontelevision national television, which is huge.
Also, I think have great playersand great coaches in our league, and
so it's been fun to see that. I do think it's funny. I
(55:55):
told our team today, we couldhave beaten anybody that we've played so far,
and we've got to, you know, really take advantage of that.
And I also told him, youknow, you don't know how good you
are. We've we've you know,we've got to continue to push and and
play to our potential. And andI think every every night we go out
(56:15):
and play another mount West team,we're we're challenged and uh we we have
to challenge ourselves to get better everynight. So it's it's fun, it's
exciting, it's a great game. It's great atmosphere at Save Mart. Love
to have anybody, anybody wants tocome, We need them. That's one
