(00:24):
Here's Matt Norvil.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
And good evening and welcome to Crowl and Wolf were
at five twenty six Bruce Avenue here in Clovis. It
is the Bulldog Basketball Hour. Thanks for listening on a
thirteen forty Fox Sports Radio or on the iHeart Radio
app for the Bulldog app as well. And we've got
three special student athletes as we have the women's basketball
team and for the next hour head coach Jamie White

(00:49):
will be alongside. We've got Danay Powell, the freshman from Vegas,
Aloni Oliver, the local product from Clovis the freshman, and
Taja Santa Maria, the sophomore from Canada. Dogs currently have
won their last three games. They won yesterday at Buy
twenty over Utah Steak. Guys. Thanks for joining us here tonight.

Speaker 3 (01:07):
Thanks for having us.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
So you guys, playing some good basketball. Let's start off
with how you're playing today, start us off as a freshman.
You guys are looking good. You've won seven of your
last ten, You've won three in a row. What's been
clicking and what's been working for you individually?

Speaker 4 (01:23):
Yeah, individually, I think just just effort and just trying hard.
But like all together, I think we're just really coming
together and showing the chemistry that we've been building all summer.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
Tajon, what has it been like for you? Obviously you're
out injured right now, but sitting at what have you noticed,
you know, all freshman team member last season, starting point
guard coming in, what have you seen from the bench.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
Yeah, I think sitting on the bench definitely gives you
a different perspective on the game and you get to
see the game in a different way. So I'm definitely
learning and seeing what they're doing on the court and
then kind of help them out when they come out
or in practice. I think the team's been doing really
well and you can tell that they're really well almost you,
like Danay said, So it's been really cool to see

(02:06):
and I can't wait to hopefully get back.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
We've got the guard group here today. So are you
kind of the quote unquote vocal leader. I know you
guys are all young, but are you kind of the
one that kind of shows in the ropes?

Speaker 5 (02:16):
I tried to.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
All Right, Alani, talk to me about for you. Obviously
you're sitting out this season. What's it been like for you?
What's practice been like, and how's everything been going for you?

Speaker 6 (02:27):
I would say like practice overall has been great. Yeah,
I'm not playing on redshirting and so I am going
against them every single day, and I feel like that
has improved my game since I first came and came
out of high school.

Speaker 7 (02:41):
So I feel like it was a great overall.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
Let's get a little background from you guys, because obviously
you've got two freshmen and a sophomore, so that the
people listening at home and even the people here can
get to know you a little bit. So Dnay, talk
to me. You're from Vegas. What made you decide to
come to Fresno State and give me a little bit
of background about you and your family.

Speaker 4 (03:02):
Well, yeah, I've the past five years I've lived in Vegas,
but I was usually from southern California, but I chose
friends of State Honestly, I just had a good feeling.
And I remember when I went my visit, like the
coaches were all nice, and I really liked the girls,
and I was like, Okay, like if I love it,
I'm gonna I'm gonna just commit, and I did.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
So, yeah, talk to me about your family. Got an
identical twin? We were in Vegas and I was telling
Mariella we were sitting that she walked in and it
said first glance. I was like, d and they already
show up and I was like, wait, that is her
twin sister, So get an identical twin. And what a
couple of brothers as well?

Speaker 7 (03:39):
Yeah, I have two order brothers too.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
So just so you got what for you guys?

Speaker 4 (03:44):
Yep?

Speaker 2 (03:44):
How was it like growing up, you know, with sports
with your identical twin and then your two brothers?

Speaker 7 (03:50):
It was great.

Speaker 4 (03:51):
I mean obviously as an identical twin, like we're just
grouped as like kind of same person. So I think
like us choosing our different sports just really helped, like
just gives her own things. But yeah, she's playing I
mean no, she's running track at Utah Valley.

Speaker 7 (04:08):
So it's just been fun, Saysia.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
Talk to me about your family a little bit. We
talked about it last season and a couple of times
during it broadcast, But your family went to a couple
of games early got to see them talk to me
about your background coming from Canada.

Speaker 3 (04:22):
Yeah, it was pretty cool that my family was able
to come watch the last couple of games that I
played this season. Obviously, my family's big on basketball. My
little sister and my little brother both play, and my
sister's supposed to come here in a couple of years,
which is very exciting. So I think coming from Canada
and moving away so far from my family, being in

(04:43):
California now, the team kind of gives me sisters, and
the coaches give me a little family, and even our
locker sponsors and the daughters and cousins that they have,
they all kind of feel like my family, and my
oh and my and freensdo. Really feels like a homeway
from home for me. So I think when I came
on my visit initially, it really felt like I was
gonna be supported here and I still feel that up

(05:05):
until now, which is a really good.

Speaker 7 (05:06):
Feeling to have.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
Your dad was telling me that you get your basketball
skills not from him, but from your mom. Actually, that's
what he was telling me.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
Yeah, he likes to make that.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
All right, Alani local kid obviously from Clovis. So what
made you decide to come to Fresno State?

Speaker 7 (05:20):
Oh, I just wanted to say local.

Speaker 6 (05:22):
I wanted to say around my family because that's like
a really big part of my life is my family
can always being around them. And I know, like if
I went far away, it was gonna be hard, and
I was gonna get home. It's like real easy, and
I don't think it would have been pretty for me.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
What was it like for you? Obviously coming from Buchanan
High School, that's the high school I went. You played
obviously very well started What did you play since you
were a freshman on the varsita level? I believe right,
you have to talk to me about your background with sports.

Speaker 6 (05:50):
My background was sports. It all started with my brothers
when I was really young. I have five of them,
so it was a battle growing up. But thanks to
them and taught me how to be tough. And I
would say I think I fought my way to be
able to earn a spot my freshman year on varsity.
It wasn't easy, but you know, stayed focused and have

(06:11):
my mindset on my goal and I knew I had
to be focused in a cheap rot.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
You guys answer this, so we're gonna keep it basketball related. Obviously,
we've got guards here, point guards that can You got
to distribute the ball and you gotta keep people happy
at times and at times you got to know they'll
get yours. And just what's it been like learning curve
wise for you at the college level? Go ahead today?

Speaker 4 (06:33):
I mean it's definitely been a jump. Teja has helped
me a lot, even though like like in the beginning
you led by example, I being able to watch you,
like now that you're on the bench, you're just like
a very good vocal leader and you helped me a lot.
But I feel like my high school coach has prepared
me pretty good for college. But it's just like it's

(06:54):
just a different level like everyone else, Like there's nobody
that's just like you have to like it's true, really
try every time. So yeah, that's probably been that the
guests to jump.

Speaker 3 (07:07):
What about you, Taja, I think coming from high school
to college, one of the biggest things was definitely physicality
and pace. Those are the two things that I think
at college level. No matter what level you go at,
it's going to be different. No matter what level you
played at high school, it's going to be different. So
I think I had again a lot of really great
seniors and older teammates to look up to last year.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
That kind of helped me.

Speaker 3 (07:30):
And now I try to share what I've learned last
year with the point guards over here, and I think
it's been really fun.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
Alani was the first thing. You know, as you know,
you step on the floor at practice, you notice it
right away.

Speaker 5 (07:44):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (07:44):
I like what Tay just said. The physicality and pace,
you know, coming from Track six in Clovis, who play fast,
you know, but in college it was like three notches
higher and I was like, oh, I can keep up.
But I realized I had to, you know, be able
to not play fast, but also under control. And I
would say that was probably my biggest jump from high

(08:04):
school to college.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
One question I always like asking, especially younger players, scouting reports,
because when you play in high school there's not I
mean there's a little bit of scouting report, but not much,
and you play au ball there is no scouting report.
You just go play. What's it like in college knowing
you've got a scouting report that you have to do
on defense, but then they also have a scouting report
on you go ahead today.

Speaker 4 (08:25):
I mean honestly, like the first time we did, like
our film Scout, I thought it was crazy because like
you have to like know everything about anybody, like you
have swished on them. So yeah, that was like a
challenge at first. But I feel like as you like it,
as the more games we play, you pick up on
like easier things to like remember all all the stuff.

Speaker 3 (08:48):
So yeah, yeah, I think scout Scout can definitely be
a little bit intimidating, especially since there's a lot of
players on the Scouts. A lot of teams like to
do a lot of different things, and I think I
think coming into conference, we have such quick turnarounds. We're
playing Wednesday Saturday, and the scout just keeps changing and changing,
and those new girls that you have to learn, a

(09:08):
new place that you have to learn, So coming to college,
it's definitely a different level of focus that you come
into with practice, but I think it also makes it
a little more fun, like having an idea of what
the other team's gonna do, so you're not going in
a little blind.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
Yeah, definitely a lotty for you.

Speaker 7 (09:23):
I was in the mpinga.

Speaker 6 (09:24):
Stage, I would say watching scout is just like one
after another, one after another, Like you can't get so
caught up on one, like a turn around and you know,
realize there's another team, you know, and so I'll see
this is.

let's go places.

Speaker 2 (12:49):
You can. Welcome you back to Crowing a Wolf At
five twenty six Frus Avenue here in Clovis, it's the
Bulldog Basketball Hour on AM thirteen forty Fox Sports Radio.
If you're listening on in the iHeartRadio app for the
Bulldog Gap, we thank you for listening to us here
this evening. I am met normal talking with the women's
basketball at coach Jamie White, who's in our eleventh season. Coach.
We just talked to three student athletes for to get

(13:11):
them back here shortly after they finished up eaton. Of course,
talk to me about the last couple of weeks, because
we were here what two weeks ago. Since then, you
guys have won three of your last four. We've won
three in a row, seven of your last ten if
you go all the way back to December, guys are
playing good basketball and you're nine and two at home.
So just talk me through that.

Speaker 16 (13:30):
Yeah, home court, let's play all our games. I think,
you know, we'll start with San Jose. We went on
the road to San Jose.

Speaker 5 (13:38):
Always a hard place to play.

Speaker 16 (13:40):
They've continued to get better over the years, and our players,
they just played tough.

Speaker 5 (13:45):
Came in.

Speaker 16 (13:46):
We had to go against a lot of physicality, and
I think that was MIA's first thirty point game. That
was and she just refused to lose. I thought she
did a great job. It was physical, she finished through physicality,
She got to the freak line. I think that game
made thirteen points on the free throw line. So and
drew a ton of fouls.

Speaker 2 (14:10):
Yeah.

Speaker 16 (14:10):
Yeah, it's really really something that we can hang our
hat on.

Speaker 5 (14:14):
She's been consistent all year.

Speaker 16 (14:15):
Obviously as a coach, that's nice to know, you know,
you know where to go to get a.

Speaker 5 (14:20):
Foul, get a drive, get get a three.

Speaker 16 (14:22):
I mean, you just can't. You can't guard her enough ways.
She's she's really tough to guard. Her reboundings have been
her rebounding has been huge. She's almost averaging ten uh
a game, a double double. I don't think we've had
that for a minute.

Speaker 2 (14:36):
For a while. Not average.

Speaker 16 (14:38):
Yeah, yeah, and so just really proud of her and
all her hard work.

Speaker 5 (14:42):
That she's put in.

Speaker 16 (14:43):
But we're gonna do it without our supporting cast, and
we've had to make shift a little bit without Taja
in the in the mix, people are pressing us.

Speaker 5 (14:52):
We're having to break the press, bring the ball down.

Speaker 16 (14:54):
Saga's jumping in, Dunay's jumping in to play the point.
That's been really important to us. And then we talked
a little bit about Kylie Fox. She she has been
so helpful, can hit down, can hit the three, but
just defensively, she's the glue defensively. So you know, at
San Jose, it was a tough game, but a good

(15:15):
game to win on the road, especially and early in
the in the in the conference. It helps so much
to get those wins on the road, and then coming
back playing a.

Speaker 5 (15:25):
Boise who's solid.

Speaker 16 (15:26):
They had five returners, some fifth years, you know, one
of the I think leading shot blockers in the country. Yeah,
and we knew it was gonna be a tough game,
but man, our kids played really tough at home, and
I think that's that's probably there's you know, two or
three games that have been the bigger games of the year,

(15:49):
and that is one of them, a team that we
matched with. Okay, but you know there was some things
that we were gonna have to do to win the game,
and our kids just again refused to lose, played tough,
played physical, Mia got another thirty point games thirty two
points in that game, and you know, we really struggled
to shoot the three, which was so good to win

(16:11):
a game like that because you're not always going to
hit the three. And we struggled a little bit to
shoot the three, but we the same thing we got.

Speaker 5 (16:19):
I thought, we.

Speaker 16 (16:21):
Uh, we got layups, we broke the press, we were
able to move the ball effectively, and then we just
have had if it's if it's not one person, it's
another person stepping up. We're getting pretty consistently three to
four people in about double digit area, so that's been helpful.
And then last night we played Utah State. The hardest

(16:44):
team to play is.

Speaker 5 (16:45):
The team that hasn't won in the conference yet. That
was UTAs State.

Speaker 16 (16:48):
And then we play another one in Air Force, but uh,
you know, they were in it to win it. I
mean they came in hot and and aggressive, and we
had to break the press.

Speaker 5 (16:57):
Again and and I thought, you know, first probably quarter
and a half.

Speaker 16 (17:02):
It was close, too close for comfort, and at the
end of the game is the hardest twenty point win
we never had.

Speaker 5 (17:07):
So but it's just one of those. We grinded it out.

Speaker 16 (17:10):
It wasn't pretty, but our kids kept playing, playing through
things to Nay came up big, I said. One of
my highlights was her her last second three point or
her shot clock three point shot she made. Yeah, and
then she's been able to help us handle the ball.
We had to break the press and her saga Kylie.

(17:30):
You know, every guard on our bench has got to
go in and do that. So it's been it's been fun.
And you know, Mea had twenty six points, but Mariah
had what sixteen or fourteen last night.

Speaker 2 (17:42):
And fourteen Yeah, you know, it's just.

Speaker 16 (17:45):
It's been nice to be able to have any different
players step up, you know, for the most part.

Speaker 2 (17:51):
Yeah, you guys have been getting three to four players
in double figures the last few games. And Maria Kay
is another one who's been playing really good basketball. Just
the last couple of games, she's been in a little
bit of foul trouble. It's funny, we see you smiling
right now. But in that first quarter, you burned a
time out and you were not happy with how you're
breaking the press. But after that, guys really settled down
and did a much better job.

Speaker 16 (18:11):
Yeah, well we had I think we had seven turnovers
in the first quarter, so not too.

Speaker 5 (18:15):
Happy about that.

Speaker 16 (18:16):
And I told the girls today, like my temperature rises
on turnovers. And I told him, hey, I've meditated three
times today and I still I still got fired up.
So you know, I think I had to get to
the free throw line to call that time out. But
you know, none of the kids are you know, we
just got to settle down, calm down. We tweaked a
few things, made sure the right person's taking the ball out,

(18:38):
people were organized, and then I mean I thought we
broke the press really well. And after that we didn't
turn the ball over nearly as much.

Speaker 2 (18:45):
Yeah, it became a layup throw really after that. You
guys have been so good at home nine and two.
Obviously that's something you've got to love. But when you
look at that, I mean, what do you attribute that to?

Speaker 4 (18:55):
You?

Speaker 2 (18:55):
Red wave shows up. You've had some good crowds already
this season. Boise State was your biggest out this season,
and and really that was probably one of the most
fun games to watch, besides Northern Arizona, which you also want.
What do you attribute that record to.

Speaker 16 (19:08):
Well, obviously, I think we've We've done a good job
in scheduling. We've gotten a lot of home games, and
I think, uh, you know, being able to have.

Speaker 5 (19:20):
Consistency at home is so nice. That's why you get
the home corn advantage.

Speaker 16 (19:25):
Right, you're sleeping in your own bed, You're you're eating
at the right time, you're shooting around, you're doing all
the things, but just being out there.

Speaker 5 (19:32):
I think our girls really feel a pride.

Speaker 16 (19:34):
For you know, the red wave and and honor the
you know, the hard work they've done throughout the week
and and want to showcase that for our fans and
friends and family. And I think we've had to be honest,
I think our attendance is up. I think we've had great,
great attendance. But we've also we have free parking, yes
did I say free parking, and our marketing team has

(19:58):
done a great job of having some different things. In fact,
the Boise game was the Spirit Fester where we had
the cheerleaders, and I think that's always really fun. We've
had the baby race, We're gonna have the Women's in
Sports Day, Yeah, that's coming up, uh huh, and the
rally in the valley. So just just just fun to
have some different things for our community.

Speaker 2 (20:17):
And you guys sign autographs after certain games too, which
has been big. And that Spirit Day. I think that
was also what an autograph session game, wasn't it.

Speaker 5 (20:24):
Yeah, we had a line around the court.

Speaker 2 (20:26):
You had a line around us. And we're doing with
the interview. Huh yeah, I know. Good things happened at
the Save Mart Center. Talk to me about the three
young ladies who were just talking to who we're going
to talk to a little bit more in Janay Powell,
Alani Oliver, Teja Sansa Maria. The Guard group is here.
Three youngsters.

Speaker 5 (20:42):
Well, I'll talk about Taja first.

Speaker 16 (20:44):
I mean, she is such a staple for our for
our team and for taking care of the ball, and
we're really missing her right now. I remember when she
was a freshman or a senior in high school and
we had already signed her and we were talking to
her and I.

Speaker 5 (20:59):
Was like, I just like she could play for us
right now.

Speaker 16 (21:02):
Just her her high basketball IQ, easy to play with,
communicates well, and just really takes care of the ball
and that's just what we didn't have and that's how
she changed our program coming into it. So we're missing
that and hoping that that changes soon. But she's been
I'll put her in the coaching mode once in a
while in practice and and she's been kind of sitting

(21:25):
on the sidelines working hard to get back and we're
excited for that.

Speaker 5 (21:30):
Denay has really.

Speaker 16 (21:32):
Kind of been thrown to the Wolves because of Tasia
being out, and that's been so great to see her
develop and get better. And every minute she's in the game,
she's gotten better. She's handling the ball in that I
think it was the Boise game she got.

Speaker 5 (21:46):
To the rim.

Speaker 2 (21:46):
She did finished.

Speaker 5 (21:49):
Yeah, such so important because there's times.

Speaker 16 (21:51):
When we were hitting our threes, but when we're not,
we've got to get to the rim.

Speaker 5 (21:55):
And I think she's that's one of the.

Speaker 16 (21:59):
Of her strength and her teammates really believe in that,
and so that's really nice to see that. And then
obviously handling the ball and breaking the press and and defending.

Speaker 5 (22:08):
One on one. And then Alanie.

Speaker 16 (22:11):
Oliver, who we call aoh yeah, because there's a lot
of Lonnie Lady, but nice to have her here. And
she's in practice, working hard, making us better every day. Uh,
she decided to red shirt, but really, you know, with
Taesa's injury, I've been tempted to pull her out of it,

(22:32):
but we're being patient and she's just she's really been helpful,
so explosive athletically, can shoot the three, can get to
the rim. I mean, she gives us buckets on days.
So really excited about our our youth at the guard
Spot and hopefully we'll have it for a long time
and and be able to be really successful.

Speaker 2 (22:52):
And you've got a really good youth at the guard Spot,
really good group and good core group. Got to talk
about one young lady. She's not here today, but Mia
Jacobs on the Becky him in mid Major watch lists.
That's I mean, that's such a big honor. You've had
some players obviously that you've coached here at Presno State,
that have been on that list. There's only fifteen finalists
and she's one of the fifteen.

Speaker 5 (23:11):
Yeah.

Speaker 16 (23:12):
Well, I think obviously her stats speak for themselves. To
have as many double doubles as she has and then
to have some back to back thirty point games. I
mean when I was in school, I did have twenty
seven points once and I thought I scored one hundred
when that game was done. But yeah, thirties a lot.

(23:32):
And it's also a lot during a game, during a
big game of Bois where we're depending on her to score,
and she's doing it in so many different ways. I mean,
I can't tell you how many times she's like kind
of broke some ankles, you know, and had some flybys
and just knocked down mid range deep threes. And again
the getting to the rim and getting fouled has just

(23:54):
been so helpful. So I'm really I'm really happy for
she deserves it. She's worked really hard, and you know,
big time players can perform.

Speaker 5 (24:05):
Consistently, and that's what she's she's starting to do.

Speaker 2 (24:08):
Yeah, she's averaging nineteen and just to shaite under ten
rebounds for the season, and she had back to back
thirty point double doubles and only two players did that
last year in mckinnahoff Shield and Caitlin Clark. So geez,
that tells me what me and me has been doing
the last couple of weeks for you guys. So we're
going to take a break. This is the Bulldog Basketball Hour.
When we come back we will have the three student

(24:29):
athletes and talk a little academics as we are crolling
off five twenty six Spruce Avenue and Clovis. This is
the Bulldogs Women's basketball from Deerfield here.

Speaker 11 (24:39):
In the heart of California.

Speaker 14 (24:40):
Traditions are as deeply rooted as the abundant fields that
drap Bar Valley. They link us across generations. They make
us who we are. So what does it mean when
traditions unite? When a beacon of hope beats a source
of pride, When you combine a place that's full of

Back to Crowling Wolf Time twenty six Bruce Avenue here
in Clovis. Thanks for listening on AM thirteen forty Fox
Sports Radio or the iHeartRadio app for the Bulldog app
by Matt Norvil, and we have the present State women's
basketball team alongside. It's the Bulldog Basketball Hour. We got
about a half hour left at chatting with these young
ladies and head coach Jamie White. We've got Dnay pal,
Lalani Oliver, and Taja Santa Maria the three guests of

(28:06):
the show here this evening. Guys, we talked a little
bit about athletics and while you chose to come to
Fresno State, let us talk about the school side. I
call you guys student athletes because obviously there's academics involved.
Talk to me a little bit about how class is
going and if you have a major picked out, what
it is and what do you want to do with it?
Go ahead today?

Speaker 7 (28:26):
Well, last semester went.

Speaker 5 (28:28):
It's good.

Speaker 2 (28:29):
Okay, that's good.

Speaker 4 (28:30):
Yeah, I went up for the most part. My major
right now is criminology. Well, friends, that can be here
with sciences, but I'm hopefully looking.

Speaker 7 (28:43):
To change that, so I'll take some classes this semester
try to change that.

Speaker 2 (28:48):
What was it like as a freshman walking in and
you know you've got basketball you've got academics and that
takes up a lot of your time.

Speaker 4 (28:56):
Yeah, I mean, honestly, I feel like it was not
easier than high school, but like we would be in
school all day and then you have to have practice
and then just like yeah, you wouldn't get home till late.

Speaker 7 (29:08):
So I feel like it was a little easier being
able to have class online and in person.

Speaker 2 (29:14):
But yeah, I think good a asia for you. I
know you're a sophomore, so you already went through it
last season. What a first semester for you? What was
it like and how much easier is it now as
a sophomore. Maybe it's more difficult it is a sophomore
than a freshman.

Speaker 3 (29:26):
Yeah, it's not too difficult yet. I don't think I'm
into my really hard major classes, but last semester went
well for me. I'm a kinesiology sport admin major and
I would like to work in professional sports when I'm
done playing basketball, So yeah, I'm kind of working through it.
But I think having school take up so much time,

(29:49):
it's kind of because you can make your own schedule
in college, so if you know you're good with aight ams,
you can't give yourself an eight am me and today
did that by accident and we're actually in the same class.
We figured that out today. But it's nice having freedom
to you know, choose when you want to go to
class and when do you.

Speaker 2 (30:06):
Guys go back to school? Were you back today? Are
you back? Where you're back today?

Speaker 16 (30:09):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (30:09):
Today's our first day.

Speaker 2 (30:11):
So you had a nice little break and now you're
back to the grind, right, Yeah, all right, Elani, first
semester for you? What was it like walking in and
how how's it going?

Speaker 6 (30:20):
First semester was a little nerve wracking just to like
find my classes. But after that I got on a
groove of things and just you know, go from there.
My major is psychology and I want to get my
LMFT after so I can work with family and children

(30:40):
to help.

Speaker 2 (30:41):
So are you and Saga talking a lot? Because it
isn't her major psychology too?

Speaker 6 (30:44):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (30:46):
Okay, okay, talk to me about academic advisors. How important
is it for you guys? How much does that help
you with your studies? Oh? There she is, Yeah, there is,
she's probably here tonight, right, give her a shout out
of today.

Speaker 7 (31:01):
Hey, Ashley, thank you?

Speaker 2 (31:04):
So what does it mean to you guys, what is
an academic advisor? Maybe if someone's listening and they're not
sure what an acad make advisor is, what do they do.

Speaker 7 (31:14):
For us?

Speaker 3 (31:14):
Our academic advisor is kind of like an outlet.

Speaker 5 (31:17):
She does a lot for us.

Speaker 3 (31:18):
She helps us pick our classes, she helps us find
tutors if we're struggling in a class. She stays on
top of us, making sure we're doing our work. She
is kind of like the person in between us and
our professors and making sure that they know all of
our commitments and when we're gonna be missing class and stuff.
So academic advisors are super duper helpful. I think without her,
I wouldn't know which classes I'd be taking if I'm

(31:40):
on the right track to graduating in four years. And
she works with a lot of us, she works with
a lot of other teams, and I think it's really
great the time that she puts in, And I think,
I hope they know that it helps us a lot.

Speaker 2 (31:52):
For you, Alannie, same kind of thing.

Speaker 6 (31:54):
Yeah, I would say our academic advisors are very important
because I procrastinate and I learned really quickly that that
is not a great idea because.

Speaker 7 (32:06):
They would check you and be like, hey, get on
your work.

Speaker 6 (32:08):
You know, like, that's not good. You run a miss
practice in one of miss practice, please, consequences are not
going to be good.

Speaker 2 (32:15):
That a all? What about you for you today?

Speaker 4 (32:18):
I mean, yeah, all of our academic advisors, they have
a lot on their plate, but just the fact that
they take time to just make sure we're okay education
wise and just in our personal lives and use it
a lot.

Speaker 2 (32:32):
That's been maybe the toughest class for you so far.
Is there one that you've taken and you're just like, man,
this class.

Speaker 7 (32:37):
Is to oh man, I had this.

Speaker 4 (32:41):
I had this computer stats class last semester and it
was a bit of a challenge.

Speaker 2 (32:47):
But you made it through. You made it through. What
about you say it was the toughest class you've had
maybe your first year and a half.

Speaker 5 (32:54):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (32:55):
Last semester I had a biomechanics class and I had
not taken physics throughout high school, so that.

Speaker 7 (33:03):
Was very new to me.

Speaker 3 (33:04):
But I mean I'm pretty good at maths, so once
I got the hang of it, it was it was
a lot of memorizing formulas and stuff, but it wasn't
that bad.

Speaker 2 (33:10):
Is there anyone on the coaching staff that could have
helped you with that. Could coach party have helped you
with that? I don't think. All right, Elani, what's the
sub's class you had for a semester?

Speaker 5 (33:21):
I would say biology.

Speaker 6 (33:22):
It's just I don't have much interest in that, so
that was kind of tough for me to get involved
with it, but I managed.

Speaker 5 (33:30):
To get through it.

Speaker 2 (33:31):
Hey, that's always good to make sure you can get
through it. How important is it for you guys, maybe
individually and for your family, just getting a college diploma,
like in the future. Obviously you're not there yet, but
I mean down the line, you know, walking out saying hey,
I have a college degree.

Speaker 7 (33:47):
I mean it means a lot.

Speaker 4 (33:48):
Of course, it took all of us, took a lot
to get here, and we just want all that hard
work payoff.

Speaker 3 (33:56):
So yeah, obviously having a college degree and having a
diploma opens up a lot of doors for you after
basketball and after school is over. So I think that
just getting this opportunity to kind of get our school
paid for and not having that to be a burden
on top of us after we're trying to find jobs.
I think the connections that you also make here in

(34:18):
Fresno and at school can help you network kind of
after we're done basketball, because I mean, there's only a
couple more years left for us playing pro or not.
So I think looking forward to open the flat of doors.

Speaker 5 (34:32):
I would say the same as stage.

Speaker 6 (34:35):
Basketball, like she said, doesn't last forever. So you need
a plan to fall back on, you know, so you
can live live.

Speaker 2 (34:41):
Yeah, exactly, so you can, you know, maybe become a
broadcaster who knows you know. So you guys, I talk
a lot about time management. You've got basketball, you got academics,
but we also need to talk a little bit about
what you do in your free time. So when you
do have free time, is there somewhere maybe someone you
talk to, or maybe you just kind of sleep that
a lot. I just sleep when I have free time.

(35:02):
Maybe there's a show you binge watch, or maybe you
go to Trader Joe's like Saga does. Is there something
that you do maybe when you when you have free
time that gets you away from basketball and gets you
away from school.

Speaker 7 (35:15):
I like sleeping.

Speaker 3 (35:17):
Obviously we don't get a lot of free time, so
my free time I like to do that, but also
just talking to my sister. Usually I get a lot
of free time during the day, and with the time difference,
it's hard to kind of call my family and call
her at night. So whenever I get a chance, I
like to check in and see how she's doing with
her classes. And it kind of takes me away from
everything that's going on here and I get to focus

(35:37):
on what's going on back home.

Speaker 2 (35:39):
What's the time there versus three hours? Yeah, yeah, that's
because it's East Coast time zone, right, yeah?

Speaker 5 (35:44):
A lot?

Speaker 2 (35:45):
Anyone about you?

Speaker 6 (35:46):
Oh? On my free time, Like I said, love my family,
So whatever time I look with, My parents are only
ten minutes away, So I go over there to their house,
you where they're cooking, eat good food there?

Speaker 2 (35:57):
You go, stay over there, get a home cook meal.

Speaker 6 (35:59):
Yep.

Speaker 2 (36:00):
Today? What about you?

Speaker 4 (36:02):
Well, my family, my family lives a little farther, so
no going over. But in my free time, I like
to cook sometimes. So sometimes if I like, I'll say,
like a meal on TikTok, and I'll try to make it,
and it makes me feel like I accomplish something.

Speaker 2 (36:19):
So what's a good meal that you can make?

Speaker 13 (36:20):
There?

Speaker 2 (36:21):
You feel like you're pretty good at making a meal.

Speaker 4 (36:25):
My sister and I really like to make are Taeketo's
homemade teketos.

Speaker 2 (36:29):
Okay, have you given anyone on the team any of
it to maybe try?

Speaker 16 (36:34):
Or no?

Speaker 7 (36:35):
The teketos? No, but early on I was cooking a
little bit. But it's stopped.

Speaker 2 (36:40):
Now we'll take another break. This is the Bulldog Basketball Hour.
We are a Colnwolf five twenty six Spruce Avenue here
in Clovis. It's is Bulldogs Women's Basketball from Learfield here

Speaker 24 (39:10):
Who is it?

Speaker 6 (39:10):
We're both important, so we could just as easily be
Starry lime lemon Soda.

Speaker 13 (39:14):
No, that doesn't sound right.

Speaker 20 (39:16):
Oh I like it?

Speaker 13 (39:16):
So you saying hip hop could be hop hit works
for me.

Speaker 2 (39:55):
Welcome back to Crow and wolff five twenty sixth Thruce
Avenue here in Clovis. This is the Bulldog Basketball Hour.
Thanks for listening on a thirteen forty Fox Sports Radio,
iHeartRadio app or Bulldog app however it is that you're listening.
Thanks for listening this evening. A reminder for you. One
week from today it'll be the Men's of Bulldog Basketball
Hour with coach Vance Wahlberg and Paul Leffler. That'll be

(40:18):
from six until seven right here at Croll and Wolf.
I've got three student athletes. We've got Dana Powell, Alonie Oliver,
and Taja Santa Maria. I'm Matt Norble as we wrap
things up with the student athletes before we finish with
head coach at Jamie White, asking you guys off the air,
if you've been able to get around and maybe discover
Fresno or Clovis, or if you kind of are just
in your bubble right now with basketball and on campus

(40:40):
and academics and all of that, have you been able
to get out at all and maybe go see the
sites or anything. Maybe not even in Fresno or Clovis's
been California in general.

Speaker 3 (40:48):
Yeah, when we're here, I think in the spring. In
the summer is when we get a lot of our
free time. So Kylie and I have made the La Drive.
We made Monterey Bay.

Speaker 2 (40:58):
That was really nice.

Speaker 3 (40:59):
I think that's one of my favorites. But in the summer,
Kylie and I really like to go to the Farmer's Market. Okay,
I think that's our favorite thing in Clovis every Friday,
get some good fruit, to see some cool performances, the
live music.

Speaker 2 (41:12):
But that's really all we do. Alania, I know you're
from here, So what's your favorite thing to do? Maybe
in this area you gotta have something. You know, you
grew up here, went to Buchanan High School. I asked
you off the air favorite food spot and you're like,
I can't really pick one, So all right, favorite thing
to do maybe in the area.

Speaker 6 (41:30):
Maybe in the summertime, maybe go to like Wall Waters
just like cool off because hot in the summer.

Speaker 2 (41:39):
Okay, okay with family or family. I know you haven't
been here too long. You got here in the summer.
It was camp first time you showed up to President. Yes,
it was. It was that when you guys moved in. Okay. Yeah,
So have you been able to get out and maybe
see anything Infornia? But have you done anything made Yosemite

(42:00):
or anything like that yet?

Speaker 5 (42:02):
Yeah?

Speaker 7 (42:03):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (42:04):
Oh, I think many you didn't know.

Speaker 4 (42:06):
Yeah, like my family and I we went to so many,
like like eight years in a row when we're younger.
Oh really yeah, but I actually love doghouse.

Speaker 2 (42:16):
Yeah, that's a great play. It's a great spot. No,
don't feel bad. I used to eat doghouse before every game,
so that's not a bad spot at all.

Speaker 20 (42:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (42:25):
Josh Mitchell, the old sports information director, is now on
the men's side. He used to bring doghouse for every
single game. So we used to have that before every
women's game. I don't think a coach Wight would like
you guys eating that before a women's game, but hey,
that's what we used to do. And so you guys
kind of mentioned already. You talked about the sponsors that
you know are part of the program. What do they
do and how much do they mean to use Teja.

Speaker 5 (42:48):
I owe a lot of sponsors.

Speaker 3 (42:49):
They help out with the law, not only the money
that they give, but also the support that they give.
I mean, we can look up in the stands and
we know that they're going to be at every single game.

Speaker 2 (43:00):
When we're doing well, when.

Speaker 3 (43:00):
We're not doing well, they're always dinner. We do a
lot of cool things outside of games with them, like
we'll have dinners with them, or we'll have Christmas parties,
and I think it's really nice. Again, They're just like
another second family to us. So I'm really grateful for
our Locker sponsors. They're great people and they give us,
you know, more andful to play for.

Speaker 6 (43:22):
Personally, I really love seeing them being there, like to
the support and I love seeing my sponsors. And one
on nine right, I come out with a little ton
when I look up and I'm like, oh, there they are,
you know, just to really put a smile on my face.

Speaker 2 (43:35):
I love seeing them today.

Speaker 7 (43:38):
Yeah, it needs a lot.

Speaker 4 (43:41):
They truly like adore us and they just support us
and just take a lot of time out of their
lives to just show us that they care. So that yeah,
it helps a lot, especially for some of us who
don't have family here.

Speaker 7 (43:54):
It just gets just like another family away from family.

Speaker 2 (44:00):
Family away from home kind of thing.

Speaker 7 (44:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (44:02):
Now, one thing, and we talked about this to day
when I interviewed you on after a game, but because
we had a lot of little girls lined up behind us.
But what's it like after a game you guys have
those autograph sessions and they are so excited to get
your guys autographs. What's that like, Tage? It starts off.

Speaker 5 (44:18):
I think it's really cool.

Speaker 3 (44:20):
It kind of reminds you that there are people that
enjoy watching our games and kind of look up to
us in a sense. And I mean every time you
step out on the court, you play like it's someone
else's first time watching it.

Speaker 7 (44:30):
You know, you want to be.

Speaker 3 (44:31):
The player that they are excited to watch and that's
fun to watch. And I think that just makes you
always show up every day, try hard, you know, don't
take a game off, because there's like those little girls
and the autographs kind of remind you that you're someone
to them, and that just means.

Speaker 2 (44:46):
A lot to you. Yeah, you're always someone's favorite player.
That is definitely a case allotting for you. First time,
you know, someone came up and said, hey, can you
sign this for me?

Speaker 6 (44:55):
I just think it reminds me or to play, not
just for myself, if not for my famis also like
the little girls that are looking up just.

Speaker 5 (45:02):
To'd be like a positive role model for them and just.

Speaker 7 (45:05):
To show like you can do it as well.

Speaker 4 (45:10):
Yeah, like they said, it just means a lot when
you have like little girls just adoring you and like
wanting you to sign their arms and like their phones.
It's just like, yeah, it just helps you not take
it for granted.

Speaker 2 (45:24):
I know when you were walking over a couple girls
were screaming, you're my favorite player? Like what does that mean?
When someone tells you that you're their favorite player?

Speaker 7 (45:32):
It means a lot.

Speaker 4 (45:33):
It It just reminds me like other people, like other
people view me like on a high pedestal.

Speaker 7 (45:41):
So it just motivates me to just keep on trying.

Speaker 2 (45:44):
Occasion when someone when the first time you heard someone
say hey, you're my favorite player, what did you think?

Speaker 3 (45:51):
I think it meant a lot obviously, just knowing that
again there's people that are out there looking up to
you and that what you're doing kind of people enjoy
watching I think it's motivating honestly, and it again just
reminds you that every time you go out on the court,
it's an opportunity and you can't really take it for granted.

Speaker 2 (46:08):
M h Elani. Has anyone recognize you from camp? Yeah,
I'm gonna say, what's that like when they come up
and they're like, hey, aren't you blah blah blah camp? Oh?

Speaker 6 (46:21):
I think you know, I think it's a really good
experience too, because you know, little girls, little kids, they
always remember you know, your face and especially how you act.
You know, so it's very important to remember that, well,
how you act can.

Speaker 2 (46:35):
Impact their lives definitely. Well said, well, Gay, I see
it as painless. Thanks for joining us here on the

thanks for listening on AM thirteen forty Fox Sports Radio.
iHeartRadio app or the Bulldog Gap as well. I met
Orble talking with head coach Jamie White. Coach, we just
wrapped up with three of your student athletes. We say
it all the time, but well spoken, nice young ladies.

(50:22):
I know that's how you like to recruit, but also
smart academically as well.

Speaker 16 (50:27):
Yeah, they've done a really good job. We had a
great semester and those three, especially TAJA's.

Speaker 5 (50:34):
I think going on back to back to back four
point zero.

Speaker 16 (50:37):
Yeah, yeah, I can say that as long as it's perfect.
And I'm just committed to academics. And you can tell
we get in the middle of the season. We get
in the middle of the year, mid terms are coming.
You can see the stress on their face, but they
really care about that, and I think the main thing
is just to recruit kids with priorities of academics and
basketball and all things turn out.

Speaker 2 (50:57):
Yeah, it's turned out well for you guys over the
last few years, especially for your program. Let's talk about
what's upcoming for you guys at the Save Art Center.
Obviously got UNLV. That's your next home game after this
road trip. To Air Force on Saturday. And then you've
got rally in the Valley and women in Sports talk
about that a little bit.

Speaker 5 (51:14):
Yeah, well, excited to have UNLV at home.

Speaker 16 (51:16):
It seems like we just played them, But it's good news.
We know what they they do, they've they've they're undefeated,
they're the best in the league right now.

Speaker 5 (51:25):
They they beat New Mexico.

Speaker 16 (51:27):
New Mexico is undefeated too, So it'll be nice to
have them on our home court. And as we always say,
you know, anything can happen at home. And uh, you know,
really they're a good team. They don't have one player
that is above the other necessarily.

Speaker 5 (51:42):
I think they have a good starting.

Speaker 16 (51:44):
Corps and uh, we've got to we've got to put
a good game together to to be able to come
out ahead. But they they've got to get on the
road and and I think we've been playing really good here.
We'd love to have a great crowd and and see
what happens. And then we've got the uh rally in
the Valley. We did our first rally in the Valley
game last year, practically gave away thousands of tickets and

(52:08):
again we have free parking, so now that's a truly
free ticket and it was just fun. And we've had
a lot of high school teams, elementary school you know, clubs,
club teams call us and get tickets, and we really
like to support the Fresnel Unified and the Clovist Unified.
So we're hoping to get a lot of people from

(52:28):
those areas and get get our community in the crowd
and give do a lot of giveaways and make make
some noise there. So we always do a local team
like a San Jose or a Bakersfield or one that's
in the valley.

Speaker 5 (52:41):
So we're excited about that.

Speaker 16 (52:42):
And then San Diego State game is gonna be our
Women in Sports Era, which is women in.

Speaker 5 (52:48):
Sports and just you know, showcasing that.

Speaker 16 (52:52):
And then it's also gonna have a Taylor Swift kind
of theme boy and we've got some really fun t
shirts that we're gonna throw out, and we're gonna have
Taylor Swift music all night and bring your bracelets, bring
your singing voices. And I've even heard we're trying to
get a Taylor Swift impersonator.

Speaker 2 (53:12):
Oh okay, I don't know that was the thing that
would add something to it. For definite, that's gonna be
a wild day. I mean we already get screams with
the T shirts to us. Now you throw Taylor Swift
and all that stuff involved. Who knows it's going to be.
Like you got a road trip coming up this week.
It's quick turnaround. You got air Force on Saturday. You
guys are playing really good basketball and you're going in

(53:34):
against a team that it's a tough place to play.
You guys won there last year and it was first
time you'd won on the road at air Force in
quite some time. It's just a tough place to play basketball.
It talks to me about that game on Saturday.

Speaker 5 (53:46):
Yeah, it is tough.

Speaker 16 (53:46):
And we go to Elevation and you know, you gotta
get ready and we've got to so we fly out tomorrow.

Speaker 5 (53:53):
We get there at air Force at.

Speaker 16 (53:55):
Eight pm and we have practice and then we turn
around and it's a one o'clock game. I don't know
for sure if it's a doubleheader, but it's a one
o'clock game, which means it's early, and so you got
to get acclimated fast and get out there. I think
you know, air Force their long term, longtime coach step
down last year and now their assistant has taken over,
so they're still very similar to what they've done, but

(54:18):
they're doing more things offensively. I do think it's gonna
be a good test for us. We will be pressed again.
They like to play fast, they like to get up
and defend, and so we're gonna really have to take
care of the ball.

Speaker 5 (54:32):
If Tasia could dress out for that.

Speaker 2 (54:35):
Game, I feel a little more comfortable.

Speaker 5 (54:37):
But our kids are really doing a good job.

Speaker 16 (54:39):
And like I said, every night, somebody else is stepping
up and we're gonna have to. I think we're gonna
be able to outmatch them inside. But the trick, like
you saw last night, was you got to get the
ball inside, and sometimes with the pressure that they put on,
that's a little bit tough. But our kids have really
again they've been working together well.

Speaker 5 (55:00):
I come to use their voices a little bit more.

Speaker 16 (55:02):
But I'm excited. I think it's a good test. It's
a good test on the road we've only been on.
You know, we've only had the one, two two away games,
but this one will really test us because of elevation.

Speaker 2 (55:14):
Yeah, this would be a different kind of test. Does
it make things a little easier, you know, with the
transfer portal. Now everywhere you go, you're like, hey, there's
new kids. You gotta learn the Air Force. Though you
walk in, they're not transferring. They're not transferring.

Speaker 5 (55:27):
No, you know what happens. I think it's the end
of their sophomore year. It's it. They get a bonus.
And so it's like in IL.

Speaker 16 (55:34):
Now Chris all right or whatever her name is, what
was her name, Chris? Yeah, she'd tell you, oh, we
don't have in I L we don't have that. And
I'm like, oh, yeah, how much do you get the
end of your sophomore year? So if you if you
take that and you're committed, then you stay there. And
so I'm just saying, okay, it's fair. But but no,

(55:54):
they they work hard. You know, you're gonna go against
kids that will not stop working.

Speaker 5 (56:00):
They work hard every day in everything they do.

Speaker 16 (56:03):
Even one time the coach told us, oh, yeah, our
kids on Thursday jumped out of a plane and on
you know, on Friday, they had to do something with guns.
And I was like, oh my gosh, what do you practice.
But they've done a good job there and they are
tough to play and they're gonna beat somebody.

Speaker 5 (56:21):
It just shouldn't be.

Speaker 2 (56:24):
Talk to me about the conference. We talk about this
a lot, but I feel like it's going to be
one of those tight conferences you already see. Already you've
got UNLV unbeaten, but right behind them, you've got Colorado
State New Mexico with one loss, Wyoming with one loss,
and then right behind them that's you guys with a
couple of losses and that's about it. So when you
look at the Mountain West Conference, it's going to be

(56:45):
a battle really for the rest of the season.

Speaker 5 (56:47):
Yeah, it's tough.

Speaker 16 (56:48):
I mean, obviously you saw a Wyoming team with probably
a Player of the Year candidate on their team with
fair tig but the top five are are tough, and
you know that. That's why that made that Boise win
so important. You still got San Diego State, who's real
good and they've just they've played a hard part of

(57:08):
our conference. And then we only play Colorado State one time.

Speaker 5 (57:13):
We're only at Colorado State and will have.

Speaker 16 (57:17):
Played UNLV twice before anybody's I mean, for some people
have played them once.

Speaker 5 (57:21):
So it's it is what it is.

Speaker 16 (57:24):
You know, it's the race for those top five spots,
and then you get to the conference and you gotta win.

Speaker 2 (57:29):
Yeah, right now you guys are in that's hop five.
So like you said, it's a race for it. It's
just gonna be one of those kind of seas, which
makes it a lot of fun. Anything in particular going
on with your program that we talk about. We talk
about locker sponsors a lot, and the kids always talk
to me about how much that means after a game
when their family's not there, but it's a family away
from home.

Speaker 5 (57:49):
Yeah, it's been really good.

Speaker 16 (57:50):
There's a couple of things we've done different this year,
as we've had two of our Hoop Club members be
able to sit courtside oh and recognize them every there's
a spotlight on them.

Speaker 5 (58:02):
And then.

Speaker 16 (58:04):
Our our kids have been able to go out into
the crowd a little bit and connect with their locker sponsors,
but connect with young kids and different people in the crowd.
And then we've been doing autographs on the court. So
that's nice because the kids get to come down and
be a little bit closer to the court. I mean,
I think our girls were there a good hour after
the game.

Speaker 5 (58:22):
Nice.

Speaker 16 (58:23):
Yeah, and just so fun to see the young kids
and how excited they are, and I just think that
means a lot to a young person.

Speaker 5 (58:31):
But it also means a lot our girls to.

Speaker 16 (58:33):
See the energy and the excitement in those young kids
as they come through and get get autographs.

Speaker 2 (58:38):
Yeah, it's such a It's so important we actually talk
to them about what it means, you know, as a
role model and when you have young kids come and
all that stuff, talk to me about this one. You've
got a pasta party? What's that all about. I saw
that they were thrown out flyers and they just handed
me one and so fill us in a little bit
for like maybe in the last minute or so.

Speaker 16 (58:57):
Yeah, our our Hoop Club puts on a party, just
a spaghetti dinner, and it's gonna be after our game
on the first and it just is kind of a
little bit of a fundraiser, but a little of a
friend raiser where they can get closer to our girls,
interact with our team. We'll introduce our team and do

(59:17):
some fun stuff with the fans. But really important that
you know, we have those things and people are able
to come and get a little bit closer connection.

Speaker 2 (59:27):
That's gonna wrap up Bulldog Basketball Hour. Our next the
Women's Basketball Show is January thirtieth. A couple of weeks
from tonight, we are at Crolwolf five twenty six Brooks
Avenue here in Clovis. I'm Matt Norble with head coach
