(00:24):
Here's Matt Norvil.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
And welcome to craln Wolf at five twenty six Spruce
Avenue here in Clovis. It's the Bulldog Basketball Hour. We're
joined by head women's basketball coach Jamie White for Fresno State,
who have won five of their last seven games, playing
good basketball. We just got off the road yesterday from
Renel after you guys have won now back to back
road games. I am at normal. Thanks for joining us
(00:48):
here this evening. Whether you're listening to us on AM
thirteen forty, Fox Sports Radio, the Bulldog app or iHeartRadio,
we thank you for listening and being a part of
this broadcast. Coach talk me through what you guys have
done the couple of games or so a couple of
really tough road games at the pit in New Mexico
with about fifty five hundred fans and then almost eleven
thousand yesterday against Nevada, and those are two good wins
(01:11):
for you guys on the road.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
Yeah, I mean, any any win on the road is good.
New Mexico is fun because we know we're gonna go
to elevation, we're gonna play in the pit, We're gonna
roll the basketball up the tunnel.
Speaker 4 (01:22):
It's true.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
You know, the coaches, we we're good for like one
time down and back at the tunnel. The kids got
to do it every time during a game. So anyway,
it was a fun game. It's we always have a
good crowd there. New Mexico was I think second or
third at that time when we played them, and you
know they have some sharp shooters.
Speaker 5 (01:44):
We were aware of them.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
I thought we played really consecutive solid quarters.
Speaker 5 (01:50):
Third quarter we were.
Speaker 3 (01:51):
Down, we got down I think fifty nine to fifty,
and then came roaring back in the forth. So a
really good game. I thought we had well, really good
performance from all of our kids, you know, rebounding, shooting
the three. Our shooting percentage was good. Our rebounding was
solid and just consistent. We knew we had to play
(02:13):
every minute of every quarter. And we really did all
the way down towards the end, and at the end
we had good, good game management, good clock management.
Speaker 5 (02:21):
The girls just really refused to lose. We had some
big moments.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
Yeah, you guys outscored them in that fourth quarter twenty
seven to seven. You talk about closing games and closing quarters, well, well,
yesterday in Nevada, the way you guys closed in that
fourth quarter is the reason you walked.
Speaker 4 (02:37):
Away with the win.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Saga hits the big jumper and then me and the
step back, but really, that entire quarter from about the
four minute mark on, you guys close.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
Well, yeah, I mean again, another really good team win.
We had a couple people in foul trouble and Holly
Griffiths came in and gave us some big minutes at
the five and altered shots and.
Speaker 5 (02:57):
Made layups and that was huge for us.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
And then I thought, again, that might be the first
time we've out rebounded in Nevada team. They're good rebounders
in general, and we had to rebound to finish that
game off. And that's what I thought. We were really
solid late in the game to rebound. But yeah, I
thought Saga had a great, great game and then Mariah
had double digits and then Mia had the double double.
(03:22):
But I think fifteen rebounds was a little different than
nine or ten, and it really helped us put us
over the top.
Speaker 4 (03:31):
That's a big win.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
And you had a huge atmosphere, good spectacle yesterday with
almost eleven thousand, most attended women's basketball game in Nevada history.
What was it like, you know, coaching, and I know
you're so focused you don't get to hear all the
screams in the yells, But what was it like for
you guys on the bench?
Speaker 3 (03:47):
Yeah, well you could hear it when they started trickling in.
Speaker 5 (03:50):
But you know, I think that's so fun.
Speaker 3 (03:52):
It's great opportunity for the community to support their team
and great to play in that enthusiasm and that energy
that that brings. And even though we told our players, like, look,
they're little kids, they cheer for every casket, but they
they were good.
Speaker 5 (04:08):
They did a good job.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
Booing and cheering and doing all the things that it
was fun to play in that. You know, when I
walked out, I felt like the energy of a championship
game when there's a lot of people there, there's a
lot of you know, build up to it. I feel
like our girls, we had a little bit of a
slow start, but here's the reality is they don't always
play in that either, and so they had to get
(04:32):
used to it along with us. And again the endurance
of our team throughout the entire game to play every
minute to you know, keep plugging away.
Speaker 5 (04:42):
We let them go on runs. There were moments when.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
We were like, well, you know, that was a good try,
but we just kept coming back. And you're right, Saga's
jumper me is three. But everybody put together, I just
thought really had a good home or a good full
team win.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
And this week and you guys got San State, which
is Rally in the Valley, a big game coming up
to try to continue to build a momentum that you
guys have obviously if you did San Jose State the
first time you played. But talk about Saturday with Rally
in the Valley, what you're looking and how you're trying
to get the crowd out for the same art center.
Speaker 5 (05:13):
Yeah, it's just a.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
Game every year that we really want to, you know,
give a lot of tickets out to community. I think
we reached out to the to some of the school
districts in the area, get a lot of kids at
the games, and and I think, you know, for our
players playing somebody local, so it will bring you know
a few people from maybe around the area to Uh,
(05:36):
there's gonna be autographs after the game. Our autograph sessions
are getting bigger and bigger. They're want to have posters.
I think we're doing a special team poster for tomorrow
or for Saturday, and just another.
Speaker 5 (05:48):
Opportunity to meet the girls.
Speaker 3 (05:50):
And rub shoulders with them, get a poster, go down
on the floor a little bit and then and see,
you know, an exciting game and every game as we're
winning and doing better, every game is gonna build more excitement.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
Talk about the autograph sessions getting bigger and bigger. I
think last time you and I did an interview, they
were lined up way behind us and the autographs are
way down the way, so they are definitely getting bigger.
Talk to me about the three student athletes going to
be interviewing after this break, Maria Kay, Malayalist Seer, and
Alana Chatfield. Three student athletes said, have all been a
(06:24):
part of your program now for at least a year plus?
Speaker 3 (06:26):
Yeah, well, you know we're Maria Kay, Maria CONSTANTINEDO.
Speaker 4 (06:31):
Right, correct, Oh you said it correctly. There you go,
not with the.
Speaker 5 (06:36):
Accent I needed. But I'm learning.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
She's been great and starting five for US and has
come on great this year.
Speaker 5 (06:44):
She had some time last year.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
But she's just really had a good off season, worked hard.
I just think every time she plays she gets better.
She had a little foul trouble yesterday, but I said,
when we when we put her back in with four
fouls or defense was even better there was And she said, Coach,
I always play with four thousand high school.
Speaker 5 (07:02):
I said, all right, but yeah, just excited for her.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
She's had great moments, especially with offensive rebounding. She's a
great offensive rebounder. She's been scoring inside, she can face up,
just really really been able to grow her game. I
think over the last probably two months too, done some
different things. And then Malaya, she's from Portland, she's been
with US a couple of years. Just lightning fast, can
(07:29):
get in and score over or through just about anybody
you know.
Speaker 5 (07:34):
Has really been you know, just learning.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
Every time she gets in practice, she gets in and
does some great things. And her ability to you know,
press and defend and get to the rim is uncanny
and then Lonnie, she's our our deep three shooter. You know,
somebody asked us, who's your Caitlin Clark, and everybody's like Lonnie. Lonnie,
she has some logo threes up her slave.
Speaker 5 (07:58):
And been doing a good job.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
Just you know, learning the defense, rotating on on defense
and being able to be in help side at right times.
And then her speed is really picked up. And and
she is very uh smart in our offense, like she
cuts at the right time. She is able to come
off screens and do the things that we need her
to do.
Speaker 5 (08:23):
So really excited about her progress.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
Did you notice against San Jose State you had three
Aussies on the floor at the same time at one point.
Speaker 4 (08:30):
Did you know that?
Speaker 3 (08:33):
I just watched that. Yeah, that's fun.
Speaker 6 (08:36):
You know.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
Obviously Holly Mia and and Lonnie. I think they all have,
you know, a connection there, and they all want a car.
Speaker 5 (08:47):
Wait, Lonnie has a car.
Speaker 3 (08:49):
Drive Lonnie's car, gotcha, But no, they it's been fun
to have them. And I think the other day it
was Australian Day. You'll have to ask Lonnie about that.
It's like their Fourth of July, okay, but anyway, it's
kind of fun. We we tease them about Veggiamite and
all the all the Australian things.
Speaker 5 (09:06):
So that's fun.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
Got a good group of kids, and you're playing some
good basketball before we take our break. Coach, obviously the
Mountain West Conference, you know, halfway through the season, your
spot right now, you guys would have a bye and
you'd be already advanced to the quarterfinal. How do you
keep the momentum and keep continuing what you guys have
been playing some good ball the last couple of weeks.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
Well, you really just play one game at a time.
I mean San Jose has beaten San Diego State. Yes,
it is I think one of the better teams in
our league, and and they beat him there, so I
think that's important. Like we can't overlook anyone. And San
Diego or San Jose gave us everything we could hope
for when we went there. So hopefully we've learned and
(09:48):
we've gotten better since that game.
Speaker 5 (09:50):
But they have They have.
Speaker 3 (09:54):
A girl that was shooting sixteen percent from the three,
and after we played her, she has She's had like
four out of of seven games of twenty plus.
Speaker 4 (10:02):
She's on a tear.
Speaker 5 (10:03):
She we turned her light on.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
I said, today, but we're gonna have to recognize where
she's at. They have a couple of post players that
are solid, So I thought Maria Kay speaking of I
thought she did a great job on their post player
last time we played them, and we got to take
care of the ball. That's the answer. Take care of
the ball, rebound and shoot good. And our shooting percentage
right now, I think in the last couple of games,
(10:25):
we've shot in the forties.
Speaker 5 (10:27):
Yeah, upper forties, and knock down those.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
Threes once in a while. And I think, you know again,
normal things like contest everybody box out every time and
take care of the ball.
Speaker 4 (10:39):
Sounds good.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
We'll take our first break when we come back. We've
got the three student athletes. We'll chat with them. This
is the Bulldog Basketball Hour at Crolnwolf five twenty six,
Bruce Avenue. It's Bulldogs Women's basketball from Learfield.

Speaker 13 (14:13):
Hi.
Speaker 2 (14:13):
Hey, Bleae and Maria have done this a couple of time,
or you guys did that once last season? And Lannie,
is this your first time showing up is okay?
Speaker 4 (14:20):
All right, U.
Speaker 2 (14:22):
First, just talk me through a little bit where you
guys came from and a little bit about your family.
Speaker 4 (14:27):
So go ahead, lay.
Speaker 14 (14:29):
Well, my name is Lee. I'm from Portland, Oregon, and
I have two siblings and two dogs and a cap
and I have my parents.
Speaker 4 (14:40):
Okay, what was it like growing up in Portland?
Speaker 14 (14:43):
I would say it was an It's a nice environment.
I would say really rainy though, that's the only thing
I don't like about it. But I like being here
because it's not that much rain.
Speaker 4 (14:54):
There's not a lot of rain here at all.
Speaker 15 (14:56):
All right, go ahead, Lonnie from Melvinish Uli. I have
three brothers, two a twins, which is just ten twelve. Yesterday,
I was just a kid, mom and dad, a dog.
Speaker 2 (15:09):
And a doctor. What made you decide? Because I know
in your bio you said that you wanted to come
across the world. What made you decide, Hey, you wanted
to come to the States.
Speaker 15 (15:17):
Just a better environment to do both school and basketball.
Speaker 2 (15:22):
Was that very important for you? Yeah? All right, Maria,
go ahead.
Speaker 13 (15:26):
Yeah, So.
Speaker 16 (15:28):
From Greece and Germany. Families in Germany right now, and
we got a dog. His name is Kobe, and now
I have my family, he and Fresno and including a
new dog.
Speaker 4 (15:40):
How long have you had Zuri since July?
Speaker 13 (15:43):
She was supposed to be a foster dog before season.
Speaker 4 (15:45):
Stars and you just can't get rid. Yeah, there's nothing
wrong with that. Talk to me.
Speaker 2 (15:52):
What was it like growing up overseas and then coming
over to the States.
Speaker 13 (15:56):
It was different.
Speaker 16 (15:57):
I mean when I was younger, I didn't play basketball,
so I got to that when I was fourteen fifteen,
And it's similar to Portland. To be honest, it rains
all the time. It doesn't snow, it just rains, and
then there's eyes everywhere. Summers are getting hotter, and yeah,
to be fair, I spent every summer in Greece, so
(16:17):
that's just that's my happy place.
Speaker 13 (16:18):
I love it there.
Speaker 16 (16:19):
Some beats, just the smells, the food, everything is great.
Speaker 13 (16:25):
So yeah, I missed that.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
I think the first time I met you, I think
you had the Greek flag. I think it was at camp.
I think last summer I thought you had the Greek crack.
I think that was the first time I met you.
Speaker 4 (16:35):
Yeah, yeah, nothing wrong with that all.
Speaker 2 (16:38):
Let's talk a little hoops, guys. What you've been really
working on which you work on over the summer, and
what really did you add to your game?
Speaker 4 (16:44):
Go ahead by I.
Speaker 14 (16:46):
Would say what I've been working on is, so I've
been a pretty good mid range shooter, so I've just
been focusing on really my ball handling to get to
the basket. I'm working on three. It's iffy here and there,
but I feel like every time I work on it
gets better and better. So but overall, I would just
say I became more confident this year compared to last year,
(17:09):
And yeah, what about you, Well.
Speaker 15 (17:12):
My offense is one of my better things, so I've
been working a lot on my defense, like helpside, help
my teammates, but line and definitely getting back even if
Maria kay is running at me in practice, getting back there,
but yeah, Sam is like confidence and shooting the.
Speaker 4 (17:29):
Ball in in my opinion, what about you, Maria.
Speaker 16 (17:32):
Unfortunately over the summer I wasn't really able to do
a lot because I was injured before, so I had
to recover and get my body right, and then as
soon as I got here, just getting more confident when
it comes to scoring and then also facing up and
getting used to all that again because there was my
role last year. So I wasn't supposed to drive to
the basket as much, and now I have to get
(17:53):
back into that position and do that.
Speaker 2 (17:55):
Where does your footwork come from? Because you really worked
on that reverse pivot. You've turned in face. Where did
that come from?
Speaker 16 (18:01):
To be honest, I don't know. It just happened. Just
happened the game against San Diego. It just started and
then I never stopped.
Speaker 4 (18:08):
Yeah, it's a nice move. You can turn and face.
Speaker 2 (18:10):
You can do a lot with you can shoot, your
passing and dribble, you can do all that. Talk Talk
to me about yesterday the with all the kids and attendance,
I mean eleven thousand. You guys obviously knew going in
they were gonna have about nine thousand elementary school kids.
But until you walk in and you hear all they see,
all the signs and all that. What was that kind
of like this, the atmosphere and the build up to
the game go ahead by.
Speaker 14 (18:32):
I would say just I never thought I dislike kids more. No,
it was pretty funny and pretty exciting because they're like
also cheering for us as well, So it was kind
of like I was like, you cheered from the wrong team.
But I'll take you, but it was pretty loud. I
think we played through it though, and we got the wins.
Speaker 4 (18:53):
Yeah, you guys played well. Go ahead, Lona, there you go.
Speaker 15 (19:01):
One of the things that we need to work on
is communication. So it actually helped us a lot to
get that win because we had to be so loud.
But yes, I had a headache. I'm not gonna lie.
It was good, great atmosphere.
Speaker 2 (19:13):
That's what the actually assistant coach, Courtney, was telling me
before the games. She's like, hey, we're gonna have to communicate.
We got hand signals, We'll be fine.
Speaker 16 (19:26):
I loved it because there were some kids sitting behind
the bench, and so after I got I think my
third file, I was so mad. I was so mad,
And I always when I get a little mad or frustrated,
I'll walk behind the bench and the stand there for
a second and I turned around and see those little
kids looking at me, and they were so excited. They
wanted a high five, and I was so happy, and
(19:49):
it like changed my mood completely and I was bag
focus on the game. And then the funny part was
that they had like the wolves on their cheeks and
like the shirts and everything cheerful about it. But then
they were so excited to get a high five from me,
and I just loved it.
Speaker 2 (20:03):
Yeah, it was a great atmosphere for basketball yesterday. All Right, guys,
when you obviously you got teammates that you're really tight with,
and you've got teammates that you're even more close with, Like,
so who would you say on your team that that
you're like the closest with?
Speaker 4 (20:16):
Would you say, like.
Speaker 14 (20:19):
I would say probably Ao, Alani, Yeah, Alani and Dnay
And then of course I got my roommates Saga, Laney
and Lannie. But as far as like age wise, I
would say Ao and done.
Speaker 4 (20:34):
Okay, Yeah, I agree.
Speaker 15 (20:36):
With the Romans. But I've become really close with Holly,
which was kind of obvious thing, so he means the same.
But yeah, pretty much get along with everyone, the MK and.
Speaker 4 (20:48):
Zuri and Zuri of course, can't don't leave out Zuri.
All right, Maria, what about you?
Speaker 13 (20:53):
To be honest, I don't have a specific person. I
just love like the team.
Speaker 16 (20:57):
I'll go over to their apartment a lot, which is Laney, Saga, Lammie,
and Late. I just go over there and then haul
Lisa too and we play Uno and then I'll just
get along with everybody on the team.
Speaker 13 (21:09):
So it's pretty good.
Speaker 2 (21:10):
Have you guys had a Saga's cooking yet? She said
that she's really been working on her cooking. What have
had that? That's what she's That's what she said. She said, Hey,
you know, she was excited about Trader Joe. She said,
she's really been working on her cooking. Have you guys
had any of it?
Speaker 4 (21:22):
Yeah?
Speaker 14 (21:23):
No, I would say, ladies.
Speaker 4 (21:28):
Oh okay, she cooked for us last night.
Speaker 15 (21:30):
Oh try tip corn.
Speaker 14 (21:34):
Yeah, we kept home to.
Speaker 4 (21:35):
A good Yeah, all right.
Speaker 14 (21:38):
Most sees Saga make like yogurt bulls.
Speaker 2 (21:43):
This is the Bulldog basketball or will take another break,

Welcome back to Carli Avenue. It's the Bulldog Basketball Hour.
We were with the present State women's basketball team. We've
got three student athletes, Maria kay and the Layla sur
and Alana Chatfield. I am Matt Norble. Thanks for joining us.
Whether you're listening to us on AM thirteen forty, Fox
Sports Radio, the Bulldog Gap or iHeartRadio. Thanks for joining
us here this evening. All right, guys, got to talk academics.
(25:20):
Obviously have to talk to school. We say student athletes
all the time. We talked a little hoops. Let's talk
some at schoolwork. How's it academics going for you in
your first what year and a half or so? Lea
and do you know a major? Do you know what
you want to do? Kind of kind of feeling it out.
Speaker 14 (25:34):
So so in high school I did radio broadcasting for
my major, so then I carried that over to college.
So right now I am a communication journalism and broadcasting major.
So I'm doing a lot of like mobile journalism, like
taking a lot of photos and a lot of journaling,
just a lot of that. But it's pretty pretty decent,
(25:56):
I would say, pretty easy major. But as far as
is after college, so I obviously chose my major to
stick to, like what I know, but as far as
after college, I want to be a luctitian in a
barber So okay, yeah, I kinda kind of not not
really in the same category, but that's what I always
(26:17):
wanted to do. I and yeah, that's just always been
my hobbies.
Speaker 2 (26:20):
So there's actually a referee that does your guys games
a lot during the conference and that's what she does
her free time.
Speaker 4 (26:27):
She talks to She talks to us all the time.
Next time I see her, I'll be like, hey, you know,
that's all I wants to do. Okay, Yeah, that she
talks to us all the time.
Speaker 2 (26:34):
She's down in La Okay, that's where she's based, all right,
go ahead.
Speaker 15 (26:37):
Yeah. So going into college, I business major, and then
after taking all my accounting classes and all my all
those hot classes, I narrawed it down to marketing. So
now I'm just business marketing. And after I don't know yet,
but something in the business area, maybe in maybe in sports,
maybe in media. I don't know yet, but.
Speaker 13 (26:59):
She'd be interested.
Speaker 2 (27:00):
Are you thinking about trying to stay over here in America?
Are you gonna go back to Australia? Do you know
that yet either?
Speaker 15 (27:04):
That is a question everyone seems to ask to me,
especially my parents. I haven't hardly decided yet, but I'm
fifty to fifty.
Speaker 2 (27:12):
I think you've got tons of time on that. Still,
all right, Maria, what are you trying to do?
Speaker 13 (27:17):
So?
Speaker 16 (27:18):
I mean, right now, I'm a pre business major. Haven't
declared what I'm gonna do specifically, but I'm also not
sure if I'm going to use my major. I mean,
it's a broad major, so I can do whatever with it.
But I want to play pro first. I want to
go back home, play in the EuroLeague hopefully, and after
that I'm considering coaching.
Speaker 4 (27:38):
Really, ok, yeah, I want to.
Speaker 16 (27:42):
I mean just influence a player's life kind of and
like help them have a great experience in college or
wherever I'm at.
Speaker 2 (27:49):
So, yeah, what level would you want to coach? Are
we talking a younger level? College level?
Speaker 13 (27:54):
I would love to coach college basketball.
Speaker 16 (27:56):
Yeah, I would love to do that because I think
it's I mean, high school is exhausting.
Speaker 13 (28:01):
I bet kids that you have to teach.
Speaker 16 (28:05):
And then the women's that they're you saying, like the
same age as you. So I don't really want to
do that either. And I would love to have people
my age or like their age to teach him how
to love basketball.
Speaker 4 (28:16):
That's a good idea.
Speaker 2 (28:18):
And you got you got court on staff that could
help you out with that, Mandy, and then you got
Jamie and all of Yeah, that's a good idea coaching
and your guys any in your guys future at all?
Speaker 14 (28:29):
I would say probably. I always wanted to coach high school.
I would say, because I want to like help develop
players so they can go to that next level, and
because that's what my dad was Also, he was coaching
all throughout middle school and high school, so he kind
of inspired me to want to carry on that leg
sy to like teach other kids and help them grow
as well.
Speaker 2 (28:49):
No way, I see you at camp though, but no,
not in my future. I don't think talk to me
about classes. What was what's the most difficult class do
you think you've had your first year and a half
or so. Let is there one that stands out? You're like, man,
that class was tough. And what's your favorite class you've
had so far?
Speaker 14 (29:10):
I would say my hardest class. But trust me, I'm
really really good at math. But this math class I
never it was just hard to grasp. It was like
I never heard of this math before. And all like
half my class was half my classmates they were failing
that class, and I was like, at least I'm not
the only one. But we started out with a low grade.
Then we got it up last minute, we got it up.
(29:31):
There you go, oh, good for that. But I'll say
my favorite class, I would say, even though like a
couple weeks into school, I would say probably my mobile
media class, because we get to like we get like
a whole bunch of equipment and then we get to
like basically just like be like news news anchors or whatever.
So I would say that's pretty interesting.
Speaker 15 (29:53):
My hottest class probably accounting. I found out hot just
to like grass the contepts with the math, and then
my favorite is probably economics. I love learning about like
how to make money, how to keep it?
Speaker 4 (30:08):
What about your Maria?
Speaker 16 (30:11):
My heartest was last semester I usually have really good grades.
The last semester of this computer science class was pretty hard. Yeah,
and this semester of accounting, I don't know how that's
gonna go yet, but I'm trying my hardest.
Speaker 13 (30:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (30:27):
That leads me really into the next point. How important
is the academic advisor for you guys? Like helping you
guys out throughout obviously get not only getting classes, but
helping you and and getting you able so that you
can get better grades.
Speaker 14 (30:40):
I would say having an academic advisor is very, very
very helpful. They help us pick pick what classes that
we need to help us graduate and also like help
us out like tutors and stuff. So I feel like
that was very helpful.
Speaker 16 (30:52):
Long way.
Speaker 15 (30:54):
Yeah, they give us like so many resources that we
can use and as you said, that help us graduate,
so know exactly what we need to tech, what we
don't need to tech, what classes and what professors are
the best two tech to.
Speaker 4 (31:07):
Get where we need to get.
Speaker 15 (31:09):
So, yeah, having an advisor is really really great.
Speaker 16 (31:12):
Yeah, it is amazing because the first semester I got here,
I could.
Speaker 13 (31:17):
Not have figured that all that out for myself.
Speaker 16 (31:19):
I can tell you right now, especially with the Fresno
State potal that we have to choose our classes, I
didn't even know that existed. They helped me with us.
I'm so grateful what we had. The mean, even though
there was a lot of changes. Now they're always on
top of this stuff.
Speaker 2 (31:32):
So do you guys have a teacher that you've had
so far that or your professor that you're like, that's
my favorite professor. Do you have one of those yet
or you still kind of kind of like they're okay.
Speaker 14 (31:44):
I would say my favorite professor would be from my
last semester. His name is Paul. I forgot how to
say his last name, but he was my one of
my MCJ teachers. He was like always like understanding when
it came to work and traveling, and he just like
he was he was like always emailing me like thanks
for turning in your assignment. I'm very grateful for this.
(32:06):
I hope to see you back next semester. Drop in
anytime to say hi, Hello. He's like, he's one of
the nicest people, like well, staff members that I know
at Fresno State.
Speaker 15 (32:15):
So yeah, mama probably be my stats professor last year.
Her name is Amy Jacobs, and yeah, she was so
good at the travel. She understood like that I wouldn't
be in class most most times, but yeah, she allowed
me to pass class with the So yeah, she was
so good.
Speaker 16 (32:35):
Yeah, I'm pretty lucky. I pretty good professors. So I
don't really have a favorite. They're all pretty great. And
to be fair, we also look at the rating, So yeah,
I like them all until now.
Speaker 4 (32:49):
Well that's that's good. That's good. That's good.
Speaker 2 (32:52):
Guys, it talk to me about that. Obviously you're going
to school, you're traveling a lot. I mean, for example,
the last two days you're in you know, so how
is that to be able to pull that balance off
for you having to do work obviously in the hotel
because you're not in the classroom. And how hard and
how difficult was that maybe your freshman year and you've
gotten better now that you guys are older.
Speaker 14 (33:14):
I would say, like dealing with traveling and having the
classes that I have because for my major, my it's
more hands on. So for instance, like I'm taking a
filmmaking class and I'm like, and with our schedule, I'm
not even like I'm probably gonna be there like once
once every blue moon. So I had to sadly drop
the class. It was pretty interesting. But but I would
(33:35):
say it's it's like a it's a big conflict, I
would say, but overall, like I've improved with learning how
to manage work in school at the same time, So.
Speaker 15 (33:47):
Yeah, yeah, it's difficult, but our professors are pretty good
with that. So if we tell them I'm going to
be away, they'll send us what we've missed and then yeah,
Rachel's on top of it. We're doing study hole for
an hour while we're away. But yeah, it's pretty I've
gotten better because I've started to do my homework before
did you date, So I'm not struggling with aroway. So
(34:09):
it's that organization pretty much.
Speaker 16 (34:13):
Yeah, it really is, especially because I went to high
school in Germany and sports was not part of school,
like they were separate things and I had to organize it.
And now it's so easy because I have other people
who organized when I'm lifting, if I have classroom lyft
like I can do it before or after, And it's
just so good to have that support system, including Rachel
and all the coaches and academic advisors and everybody.
Speaker 2 (34:36):
Who's the one that gets any of the most, is
it Rachel? Is she the one that's this on you guys, like, hey,
you gotta get this done, get this done, or or
do you have someone that maybe is always like that
kind of keeps you going if you were to forget
or something.
Speaker 14 (34:47):
I mean, I would say for me, she's more of
like my hypemen because I'm always on top of my
word getting it done early so I don't have to
do it later. So I would just say she's she's
just there.
Speaker 4 (34:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 15 (34:59):
Yeah, we all have a car that's like on top
of it, so man, you'd be bugging me, makes me
send a screen truck to my grades.
Speaker 4 (35:05):
But yeah, she's cool.
Speaker 16 (35:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 13 (35:08):
I have coach Ellen.
Speaker 16 (35:09):
I coach Jazz last year, and thank god, I'm on
top of all my stuff, so I don't really need
anyone to like push me. But he always checks in
and like looks at my grades and tell me, tells
me if I missed something.
Speaker 2 (35:23):
Kind of leads me into talking about the coaches. Obviously
different positions, you're gonna have a different coach that maybe
works with you that you feel a little bit more
comfortable with. Talk about the coach that really works with
you the most in terms of developing your basketball game,
and maybe just someone that you talk to just about
stuff that's outside of basketball goodly.
Speaker 14 (35:41):
I would say, so I work with Coach Courtney the most.
She helps me with like point guard stuff. Even though
I'm not a point guard. We call me like point
guard and a half, like backup point guard for the
backup backups. But I would say she helps me overall,
help me like help She helps me with attacking the basket,
get shooting the ball. But I would say outside of that,
(36:02):
Coach Dre He he's like a big factor in that
because he's like more like me. He's more like a
crappy guard wanting to always go to the hoop and
drive to the basket. So he helps me like countermoves
and stuff on the side and stuff, and he's always
there to talk and so it is coach Agel. They're
always just there to talk and joke around and stuff.
Speaker 15 (36:19):
So for my first two years, I had Coach Courtney
being my main like person to help me, but now
Alan's in that position, so I do all my individuals
with him and we just work on my shooting. I'm
usually in like the great with Maron Kylie, so they'd
be learning some personers. I stay out on the third
point line. But yeah, he's been great and great asset
(36:43):
to the coaching stuff.
Speaker 16 (36:44):
So yeah, I have coach Mandy obviously obviously working with
her on like postal shooting, rebonding and everything. And then
I will also mention coach Dray because he keeps reminding
me of stuff, like in a game. Obviously with the
ahead of huge issues last day, but he keeps reminding me,
(37:06):
like to keep it up and like just correcting me
during the game as well. So is coach ninety two.
We sometimes rewatch Clive Smith game.
Speaker 4 (37:14):
Oh wow, so I can.
Speaker 13 (37:15):
See how to do bet it next time.
Speaker 4 (37:18):
That's good.
Speaker 2 (37:18):
That's it's always very important to get teaching from the
coaching staff. We'll take another break. We're at Crown Wolf
five twenty six, Bruce Avenue. It's the Bulldog Basketball Hour.
It's Bulldogs women's basketball from lear Field. Here in the

Speaker 2 (40:42):
We've got three student athletes alongside. Thanks for listening to
us on AM thirteen forty Fox Sports Radio, The Bulldog
app or iHeartRadio got Maria kay, Malaylasuri, and Alana Chatfield.
As we're wrapping things up, and then we'll have Coach
White for the final ten minutes or so to talk
about what's upcoming for Fresno State basket ball. Let's talk
about guys as sponsors. It's something that I know Coach
(41:03):
White has talked to us about on a number of occasions.
How important that is. What does it mean to you guys?
Do you know have that uh playing basketball here for
this program?
Speaker 14 (41:13):
I would say for me, I have Jim. He's very
he's this is my first year actually because last year
my sponsor was in the hospital, so I didn't really
have a sponsor that year, But this is my first
year having a sponsor. I would say he's very supportive
and talkative, encouraging me to always like, not be down,
do my best. He's basically like a parent that when
my parents aren't there. So I would say, I really,
(41:34):
I'm really appreciative of him.
Speaker 15 (41:37):
So my sponsors Jeff and Cynthia, and I've had them
this my third year with them, and they also supportive.
They send me texts all the time after all games,
just during the week, check me out for dinner, Christmas,
give me a little gifts. So yeah, that's great, great Paopul.
Speaker 16 (41:52):
That Tom and Judy and I love him. Judy gives
me a hug after every game, no matter if you lost,
no matter how play, she gives me a hug. There
are amazing people and I'm so grateful for them.
Speaker 2 (42:06):
I kind of want to talk about that because all
you guys have seen the student athletes, and you're not
from the state of California. Your parents can't be at
every single game. And for you guys across the world,
how important is it to have like kind of a
I won't say maybe necessarily a family member, but it's
it's someone that can take the place of a family
member when your family can't make it.
Speaker 14 (42:24):
I would say in the beginning, it was a little
difficult because I was always so used to, like middle
school and high school, having my parents there at every
single game. Then going into college, I was like, well,
just looking around at nobody. But I would say as
soon as Jim came into the role of being my sponsor,
I would say like I could always like look at
him like like after games, I'm like.
Speaker 13 (42:43):
Looking for him.
Speaker 14 (42:44):
I'm like, where's where's Jim? Just like to say hi
and like a pre like to thank you for coming,
and just have like little conversations with him, like we
talked about his cat. Just random conversation.
Speaker 15 (42:54):
Yeah, my sponsors come up to me after every game,
which is nice. But but yeah, sometimes you just need
a hug, crimonom and that's not possible for us, sir.
Just having them there to be supportive and to help
us out when we need I send them a text
if we just like want to get out of the house,
and that always there.
Speaker 13 (43:14):
So it's been good.
Speaker 16 (43:16):
Yeah, I mean, as I mentioned, the hug after the
game is amazing. Also, they just met my parents, my
mom and my sister, so she also told my mom
she will give me an extra long hug, so it
feels like it's from her and Judy.
Speaker 4 (43:29):
That's so nice.
Speaker 2 (43:31):
You guys, obviously you've got academics, you've got basketball takes
up a ton of time, a ton of time, but
you do get free time. So what do you like
to do to maybe clear your mind and get away
from school and basketball? Is there anything you do you sleep,
you relax, hang out with friends?
Speaker 4 (43:44):
What do you do?
Speaker 14 (43:46):
So my main thing is, well, everybody knows that I
nap for a living. I have to take at least
a two to three hour and a half a day.
I can't live without it. But other than that, I
would say I mostly just talk to my mom, talked
on for my girlfriend, or I play video games. That's
really it. Oh and whoever's listening among us is a
really good game.
Speaker 2 (44:07):
Okay, Yeah, I was just about to ask you what
video games you play?
Speaker 15 (44:11):
Yeah, I don't really take naps, but there's this thing
that keeps happening at our apartment in Lady Saga, Holly MK,
lady ever. You know, we've been playing it every night
for the past like three weeks. It's coming on the
road with us. Has been a big part about like
mental wellness right now?
Speaker 4 (44:29):
So are you super competitive with it? Yeah?
Speaker 15 (44:33):
We gees. We look at each other's hands, get thrown.
Speaker 4 (44:39):
Yeah, you don't want to join the leveled up?
Speaker 13 (44:42):
Now we got? Yeah we got?
Speaker 14 (44:46):
Oh my god, we have to make the first plus four.
Speaker 13 (44:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (44:51):
Geez, you guys are like high tech over there about you, Maura?
Speaker 16 (44:56):
So now I'm going on walks a lot, and I
love it. I just listening to music on nothing at
all and just walking with Zouri. And then also I
love Crushet.
Speaker 4 (45:06):
Really yeah, how did you get into that?
Speaker 16 (45:09):
I've always been a little crafty. I love cooking and
all those things, and so I don't even know how
I got into it, but I just started and now
making like stuffed animals a blankets.
Speaker 13 (45:20):
It's random, but yeah, I love it.
Speaker 2 (45:21):

I'm excited for that. And then I have another product
that I'm more excited for, which is also a blanket,
just with more details. But I made a stuffed animal
for my boyfriend and that was my favorite because it
was just so much fun making it and it actually
worked out pretty good though it was so confused, so

that one was good.

Welcome you back to Crowling Wolf five twenty six Bruce
Avenue here in Clovis. As we wrap up the Bulldog
Basketball Hour, reminder for you that next Thursday will be
the men's basketball team at Presno State with the head coach,
Vance Wahlberg and Paul Leffler will have that for you.
And next Thursday, right here at Crowlingwolf in our last
women's basketball show will be happening Friday, February twenty First,
(49:48):
I'm at Normal talking with Presno State women's basketball head
coach Jamie White. Coach. We talked about this Saturday. You've
got rally in the valley, got a couple of good
marketing things coming up. The next couple of games San
Jose State on Saturday and then on Wednesday Women in
Sports Era against San Diego State. So talk to me
about those two games.
Speaker 3 (50:06):
Well, first off, I mean two really good games that
people could come to and really fun. We've done a
lot of preparation for the marketing the rally in the Valley.
I think they're gonna give out Apple products and some iPads,
some watches and some different things.
Speaker 5 (50:21):
So there's also gonna be a photo booth.
Speaker 3 (50:24):
There's gonna be lots of giveaways and really just kind
of representing our valley and being grateful for everything our
community does.
Speaker 5 (50:33):
It's a it's a great night.
Speaker 3 (50:34):
And then on the Wednesday, February fifth, Women's in Sports Era.
I know it's kind of in Women's in Sports is
a is a big deal and and we we're kind
of having that game be representative of that. But we're
also kind of a spin off on the Taylor Swift stuff,
and so we're we're gonna play all Taylor Swift music.
(50:58):
We're gonna it's gonna be a fun night. So we
hope a lot of people will come out to watch.
Speaker 2 (51:02):
That'll be and that'll definitely be interesting, no doubt about it.
With the rally in the Valley on Saturday, obviously I
get asked this wherever I go with why is there
green for the v and just you obviously have been
with Fresno State for now in your eleventh season. What
does that mean? Every time. On every single jersey you
guys have the green v.
Speaker 3 (51:20):
Yeah, it's just a respect for our valley and everything
they do and the hard working people in this valley.
That and the green color is for the agriculture, and
that was one of the very first things I was
told when I got my job. But it is it
just grows in you, you know, and you think it
should be obvious, But we still get that question too.
(51:40):
And I think it's just us being proud of being
a part of the valley and also representing all those
people that work so hard around us.
Speaker 2 (51:49):
How do you guys go about because in years past,
you guys have worn the green jerseys, which are very,
very smooth. I like the black ones that you guys
have worn a couple of times this season. But when
you picked out the green jersey, there was a time
a couple of years ago that you guys were unbeaten
wearing the green jerseys.
Speaker 5 (52:04):
I know, we haven't imagined we went into the tournament.
Speaker 3 (52:08):
Well, the one year we went into the tournament seventh
place and we won all three games, and we're in
the championship and we wore our greens.
Speaker 5 (52:17):
I think three out of.
Speaker 3 (52:18):
The four games and we wore them in the championship game,
and they flew green T shirts all the way to
Vegas so that everybody in the crowd could wear the
green T shirts. And that that just really started the
you know, the green jerseys. And then since we've changed
from Nike, from Nike to Adidas, we have not gotten
to green jersey. But and okay, and we beat San
(52:42):
Jose State for the Mountain West regular season championship in
the green I was there.
Speaker 5 (52:48):
Yeah, And so we need the green jersey.
Speaker 4 (52:51):
I know they're clean. Man. Was that the last time
that you guys had them that year?
Speaker 5 (52:57):
Yeah, they were Nike.
Speaker 3 (52:58):
In the next year we were Adidas, but we're hoping
to get some next year.
Speaker 5 (53:02):
We we we went with.
Speaker 3 (53:04):
The black because we had a couple doubleheaders with the
men we wanted to match their black they're black or
sweet too. And then we played in the black at
New Mexico. So I think the Black Ones are undefeated.
Speaker 2 (53:15):
Also Black Ones are coach. You've been with the program.
Obviously in your eleventh season, you are nine win shy
of two hundred. Did you know that that's a that's
a gigantic number. I was talking about that actually earlier today.
What does that mean when you think of all the
wins that you've had here at Fresno State.
Speaker 5 (53:32):
Okay, so I'm nine shy of.
Speaker 4 (53:34):
What two hundred wins at Fresno State.
Speaker 5 (53:36):
At Fresno State, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (53:39):
So what does that mean when you when you hear that,
Because that's a that's a big number. I mean, obviously
you coach, you know how big of a number that is.
Speaker 3 (53:44):
Well, let's see the ten games. If we win nine
of them, we're definitely going in the top three.
Speaker 4 (53:49):
Correct.
Speaker 5 (53:50):
If we win.
Speaker 3 (53:51):
Nine over ten, eleven, thirteen games, we're probably in the championship.
Speaker 5 (53:56):
So I'll take nine.
Speaker 4 (53:58):
Let's go for nine.
Speaker 3 (53:58):
That's a good goal, know that. But you know, here's
the thing. Presno State was good before I got here.
They've they've been successful. They were successful in the Whack,
they were successful in the first couple of years in
the Mountain West. I think now you can say that
we have, you know, made it our own and.
Speaker 5 (54:18):
Done it the right way. I feel really good about that.
Speaker 3 (54:21):
Done it with great people, had great support, great great administration.
Just just you can't not be proud of being a
part of Fresno State and being a part of the
women's basketball as we've gone through these years, and so
and so grateful for the job I have and the support.
Speaker 5 (54:40):
I have, and you know, even the salary I.
Speaker 3 (54:43):
Make, and the people that support our program, like our
Hoop Club members there's some here tonight, and you know,
the people that support us in the locker sponsors. Just
just grateful for all of those people. They don't have
to do that. But I think the cool part is
we bring joy to their lives and bring joy into ours,
and so it works well together.
Speaker 2 (55:04):
We got to talk about this young lady. I know
we talk about her a lot every time I'm doing
a broadcast, But coach, you've coached greats obviously at Fresno State.
You've got another one in Mia Jacobs, and the Becky
Hammond a major watch list, and all she keeps doing
is producing.
Speaker 4 (55:18):
She's had ten games.
Speaker 2 (55:19):
Of twenty points or more, three of thirty points or more,
thirteen double doubles, which is top three in the country
in double doubles. You coach great players, and I was
talking about this earlier on another radio show about that
not every coach can coach a great player, but you
somehow always have a great player and you know how
to coach that.
Speaker 4 (55:40):
What has Mia been to you this season?
Speaker 3 (55:42):
Well, I think one part of it is the position, right,
So Alex Shety, Matty Youdy, Mia Jacobs all the same position,
Amya West had we had her a little bit longer,
you know, but that position not only you know, is
able to score, but score in multiple ways. They're a
(56:03):
stretch for you know. The amount of positions, the amount
of ability and different things that that person can do
has really helped them be successful.
Speaker 5 (56:12):
Right.
Speaker 3 (56:13):
I think we've done a really good job putting them
in a position in whether it's their position or the
offense or you know, whatever it is for them to
be successful in that. And so and then I think too,
all those kids very competitive, very competitive. I mean you
throw Hannah or Haley Cavender in there, and I mean
(56:36):
those kids are real, real competitive. So you know that
that is a lot of self determination development over years.
And Mia is showing that because she she was good
last year, but her rebounding is different this year. Her
rebounding and her ability to put the ball on the
ground and her commitment to competing.
Speaker 5 (56:58):
And I'm proud of her.
Speaker 3 (56:59):
I think she is every bit player of the Year candidate,
and she should be, you know, she should be recognized
in that way. And as we keep winning, she will be.
That's part of that.
Speaker 5 (57:10):
And we know that in sports you got to be
on the winning team.
Speaker 4 (57:13):
That is true.
Speaker 2 (57:14):
It's amazing that that is a big factor in that.
I think it's a three horse race actually right now
for player of the Year between her, Fredick and Ron
Sick for Colorado State. I think they've kind of separated themselves. Well,
you've got a game on Saturday against San Jose State, coach,
so we will be there. Thanks again for joining us
here on the Bulldog Basketball Hour here Cronwell, all right,
thank you. That's head coach Jamie whitz Erminder for you.
(57:36):
Next Thursday, we will have the men's basketball show from
six until seven. Our last women's basketball show will be Friday,
February twenty first right here at Cronwall five twenty six
Spruce Avenue here in Clovis. Bulldogs. Our pregame coverage on
Saturday beginning at one point thirty with the tips slated
for two. It is rally in the Valley. And then
(57:56):
on Wednesday, another home game for the Dogs when they
take on the Aztecs. Of San Diego State. That'll be
Women in Sports Era Day, so come to the arena
that day as well. Pregame at five point thirty with
the tips slated for six Dogs playing good basketball. They've
won five of their last seven games. They've won two
in a row on the road, and we will see
(58:16):
what happens on Saturday. Thanks for joining us on AM
thirteen forty Fox Sports Radio, the iHeart App, and the
Bulldog App. I'm Matt Normal, saying so long from Croldwolf.
This is Bulldogs Women's Basketball from Learfield.
