Speaker 1 (00:02):
On the Bulldogs Sports Network from Learfield. This is the
Bulldog Football Hour, brought to you by Table Mountain Casino.
Welcome to the Table, Pepsi, official soft drink of Fresno
State Athletics, Seed Geek, the official ticketing partner of Fresno
State Athletics, EECU Smarter Banking since nineteen thirty four, and
(00:24):
by bud Late, Easy to Drink, Easy to Enjoy. Now
live from the Point Patio barring Bistro, here's your host,
the Voice of the Bulldogs, Paul Leffler.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Well, it's a lovely evening out here at the Point
Patio Bar and Bistro, where we've got a roof over
our heads. So that's a good start. But it's not
raining right now either. Who knows if it's going to
rain Saturday night. What I know is the Bulldogs are
playing at Valley Children Stadium Saturday night at seven thirty,
and it's the first chance for the Red Wave to
watch them after that thirty to seven beat down in
(01:00):
Boise of the Broncos. So we're here till six thirty tonight.
Coach matt Ens is here. Now we're gonna have linebackers
Jaden Pearson and Kveon Thunderbird join us at the top
of the hour. We have prizes to give away. Two
red seats We're gonna give away tonight for Saturday's game
a pair of the bobbleheads. The first seventy five hundred
(01:21):
fans through the gates get these limited edition Native American
themed bobbleheads with time out playing a Native American drum.
It is Native American Heritage Night on Saturday Night. By
the way, you can get two free kids tickets with
each adult ticket if you go to go Bulldogs dot
com right now if you don't have your tickets yet.
And there is some pretty big breaking news tonight. The
(01:43):
MVP of the American League for the third time, none
other than Fresno State alum Aaron Judge. How about that?
We all know it should have been his fourth, but
we'll take three. And we have the head coach of
your Fresno State Bulldogs, Matt Nts, right here. Coach, I've
got to ask you, how many people are you keeping count?
Of all the people who've congratulated you on that win
(02:04):
over Boise State.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
I haven't cut the track of it. Shoot, I was
twelve days ago. We're ready to move on.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
I know you're ready to move on, but the rest
of us can slap you on the back a little
bit because that was a really big deal, right. Fresno
State had never won a regular season game on the
blue turf. Boise State had never been held to that
low of a point total in its FBS era at home,
and your team did everything it needed to do to
put that game away and dominate. And I know every week,
(02:34):
even when you've won, you've said, our best football still
ahead of us, our best football still ahead of us.
What does a game like that, a victory like that,
the satisfaction you see your players feeling, What does that
do on that trajectory that you're chasing to become that
finished product?
Speaker 3 (02:52):
Well, I think you know, a big win like that
on the road just elevates the standard the things that
you can demand from your team. Sometimes talk about like
today's compromises, tomorrow standard. Well, you know, when we got
back to the Fresno I kind of told them, like,
you guys screwed up. Now I get to hold you
do a even higher standard because of the way you played.
(03:12):
And they all kind of looked at me like yep,
typical coach that sounds like him, but we're going to
try to continue to push the envelope. We got a
special group of kids that have really worked hard about end.
This is an exciting time of the year right now.
Being able to play meaningful football in the month of
November doesn't matter if you're at the high school ranks
or the professional ranks, or the collegiate ranks. That's that's
(03:33):
something to be said. That's an exciting time for us
right now. We're kind of in the middle of a
three game stand here or getting ready to crank it up,
and we're looking forward.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
To it, including the next two at home and the
reality that you don't leave the state for the rest
of the regular season. I don't know if you would
remember how old you were the first time you heard
that that cliche now, but every cliche has a kernel
of truth at the core that the games you remember
are the games in November.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
I don't remember probably when probably college, maybe high school playoffs.
You know, kind of had a veteran high school coach
that probably had said something like that at one point.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
And you've got a lot of experience, not just in November,
but in December. I mean, all your years at North
Dakota State as a coordinator or the head coach. Yep,
pretty much both of those months were packed.
Speaker 4 (04:20):
Huh they were?
Speaker 3 (04:20):
They weren't. Has it created kind of a unique holiday
flow because you're always prepared for games. There was very
very few Christmases or or I don't think there's any
Thanksgivings ever really spent with extended family because you were
always preparing for a game here or there.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
How are you handling that this year?
Speaker 3 (04:42):
We are, Well, I know it's it's down the road
a little bit, but you know, we have a game
on Thanksgiving Thanksgiving weekend, so we will celebrate with the
team on Wednesday night with a Thanksgiving dinner and then
practice some Thanksgiving Day, try to give some of our
local guys the opportunity to get home. Hopefully they take
a he mate with them as well. And I'm sure
a number of our coaches will have kids over too,
(05:03):
so they may not get to spend time with their
immediate family, but with their football family for sure.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
And I think everyone's probably on the same page with this.
But just in case anyone was confused, No, we will
not have a show here on Thanksgiving Day. Yes, we
do Thursdays at five thirties, but not on Thanksgiving. We
will be here next Thursday from five thirty to six
thirty before that game against Utah State, which is going
to be the white out game. Those uniforms are unveiled
this week. We'll talk about that. I've got a lot
(05:30):
of questions for you, coach, but the fans have even
more questions and they've been flooding in on the x
app with that hashtag ask fs. Here's one from Thomas Holt.
He says, Now, this may not be a fair assumption
he's making here. He says, I know coach wants to
run the ball sixty to forty of the time, sixty percent.
He's saying, how are the coaches going to improve the
(05:51):
passing game and be less predictable? I mean, I thought
the game plan worked pretty well against Boise State, but
you want to be un predict it?
Speaker 4 (06:00):
Did it? Did you know?
Speaker 3 (06:01):
I don't know if a percentage of sixty forty is
what we're shooting for. I think I've told you before
that our magic number is fifty five number of completions
and number of rushing tempts. If we can hit that
number in a game, I think we've won like eighty
percent of them or I have over you know, my
time as being a head football coach. So you know,
my point is, let's just take what the defense gives us.
(06:23):
And you know, every game you go into it's a
little bit different. You know, I think we're hopefully hitting
a little bit of a home stretch here, hitting a
stretch where Carson continues to feel more and more comfortable.
It's had a really good week, good bye week, looking
forward to it. But at the same time, we need
to help him. We can protect him a little bit
as play callers. We can keep him out of those
(06:44):
third and long situations. That's always a benefit. So there's
a lot of things that go into it, but of
course we want to and having a guy like Zeke
Abbott back, you know, we're gonna have a full compliment
of receivers this week. So excited about our ability to
push the ball down the field but also take advantage
of maybe some single high defense.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
And you know, the big difference maker to me, the
biggest difference in the game in Boise was the way
your team dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
We did, uh, and that's something that we you know,
that's a staple that we want Fresno State football to
when people think about, you know, who they're about to play,
we want them to think about a line of scrimmage.
Speaker 4 (07:23):
Based football team.
Speaker 3 (07:24):
Again, if you can, if you can dominate the line
of scrimmage offensively, you're gonna be able to run, You're
gonna be able to protect your quarterback. And uh then
on the other side, I thought our guys did a
really good job of applying pressure. You know, going into
the game, I think boise had only given up maybe
ten sacks and I think would be maybe again it's
a while before, maybe during the course of the game,
(07:45):
had good pressure on the quarterback and those those created
some some long, long situations for Boisey, some negative plays
again and then you know, creating the turnovers, more negative
places and so just being an opportuni opportunistic playing really hard,
you know, I think all the things that we want
to be recognized as.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
And you know, when you're talking about a line of
scrimmage focused game, one of the stats that comes into
play is that top time of possession. But I've heard
you refer to it a different way this week.
Speaker 3 (08:16):
Well, well, we've we talk about time of physicality, just
again with the ability to be able to run the football,
dominate the line of scrimmage, create some knock back. You know,
if the run games you don't getting four or five
yards a clip early in the game, you hope by
being physical, by staying on the field, those those runs
(08:37):
turn into maybe seven or eight yards later in the
game and when you're starting to put the game away.
Speaker 2 (08:42):
The Bulldogs put it away against Boise State. They'll try
to do that against Wyoming Saturday. A seven thirty kick.
One more question before we take the break. This one
comes from Classy Chris on the x app with that
hashtag ask fs. He wants to know, coach, what's the
most exciting or motivating aspect of your time with the
program so far?
Speaker 3 (09:04):
I think you know, really, to me, it's the unknown
you went into it. Every day has been a new
day for me. I haven't been the head football coach
at Fresno State for over a year yet, so I'm
still learning. I'm still growing as well, figuring out the
red wave, figuring out just how things operate here. But
that's probably been the most exciting thing. Is just that
(09:25):
the newness, the just and and the relationships being created
with the football with the current for football team, there's
some really, you know, outstanding young men on that football team.
We have twenty plus seniors that are going to play
their last home game here in a couple of weeks,
and just to be able to have an opportunity to
work with them, to get to know them and their families,
I think is is pretty special. Again, this this game's
(09:49):
we try to be transformational. That's who we want to
be as a football program. And hopefully we've created a
valued experience for every single one of our players.
Speaker 2 (09:57):
And as I see some good smelling and looking food
come out here at the point, maybe this isn't fair
to ask you without a menu in front of you,
because we didn't have a show last week. Do you
remember what you ordered the last time we were here?
Speaker 4 (10:08):
Oh? I do.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
I had the Patty Mont How was it? It was good,
really good, And I'll be doing the exact same thing tonight.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
I had a feeling you might say that he's Coach
matt Enz. We're here at the Point Patti Obaran Bistro,
northwest corner of Willow and Knees, here till six thirty.
Coach will be here till six o'clock. Then we've got
players coming in Jaden Pearson and kve On Thunderbird. Come

night's game. You might win one of these bobbleheads that'll

Go Dogs, Welcome back to the Bulldog Football Hour the
Fresno State Bulldogs.
Speaker 2 (13:50):
The Bowl eligible Fresno State Bulldogs hosts the Wyoming Cowboys
Saturday night at seven thirtyeth Valley Children's Stadium. How many
of you who are here at the point tonight listen
to our last broadcast against Boise's day? How many of
you enjoyed Pat Hill's horse impression? Anyone to get to
kick out of that. We had a lot of fun
(14:10):
and Boise the Bulldogs had even more fun and they
look to get win number seven and stay in the
conference title game race Saturday night, seven point thirty against
the Cowboys. Coach, is that something you talk about with
your guys, the potential to maybe reach a Mountain West
championship game this year? Wow?
Speaker 4 (14:29):
Not really.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
We just talked about let's just win and let's control
whatever we can control, and that's the opportunity to win
this weekend and then how things fall out fall together
late in the year, they'll all take care of themselves.
Speaker 2 (14:42):
I like it. Got some more questions coming in on
the x app for coach. If you've got a question,
you can center it our way with that hashtag, ask
fs this is justin. He's part of that Green V
section at the home games, and he wants to know
what's the loudest environment you've ever experienced and how can
a home crowd affect the game the best?
Speaker 3 (15:04):
Boy, there's there's been a couple I can think of,
probably a handful of ones that jump out. As a
defensive coordinator, we played the University of Iowa, beat them
in their rank thirteenth in the country.
Speaker 4 (15:18):
That was a really loud venue that day.
Speaker 3 (15:23):
When I was at USC playing when we beat l
s U in the Allegiant Dome over in in Vegas.
Speaker 10 (15:32):
UH.
Speaker 3 (15:32):
That and everyone says, even in the NFL coaches that
I know in that league said that's probably one of
the loudest venues in the NFL.
Speaker 4 (15:39):
UH. And then you know we were We were fortunate.
Speaker 3 (15:41):
When I was at the head coach at NDSU, we
had numerous games, but I know we UH. In twenty fifteen,
we got to play Montana as a kind of a
they beat his first game of the year. UH in
in Missoula. We got to play them in the playoffs
again and it was unbelievably loud that game. And UH,
you know, any I'm third downs become unbelievably difficult to communicate.
(16:05):
I've seen games where you know, your opponents had five
or six different fallse starts, you know, just bad communication, turnovers,
and so you know, I think sometimes the crowd minimizes
the impact they can have, but if they're relentless on
your opponent, they can have a huge impact over the
over the long you know, the course of the whole game,
you know, the long game. Especially just a misstep here
(16:28):
or a penalty there, you never know how that can
impact the game. Or it definitely impacts play calling during
the course of the game.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
Yeah, and if they make an impact early in the game,
that can change the rest of the games. So be
in those seats early on Saturday night. Another reason to
be there early is the first seventy five hundred fans
through the gates get a limited edition bobblehead courtesy of
Table Mountain Casino Resort. That is time out playing a
Native American drum. It'll be Native American Heritage Night. We're
going to talk with kve On Thunderbird about that a
(16:56):
little bit later because he has some of that heritage himself.
More questions coming in online But I've got another one
for you, coach, just thinking about the big news in
baseball today. And I know you're a baseball guy. You've
got a son playing college baseball right now. Aaron Judge
gets his third MVP. By the way, the Mountain West
Tournament champion Diamond Dogs from this past school year will
(17:17):
be honored at the football game on Saturday nights. If
you want to see Murph Gray and Jack anchoring those guys,
they'll be out there Saturday. But Aaron Judge, does his
name ever come up in football recruiting for you guys, Not.
Speaker 3 (17:30):
That I've ever heard. Doesn't mean that it dn't at
one point, but I haven't heard. I mean, why once you?
I mean from a frame standpoint and a physique standpoint.
You know, I know he's been a professional for a
number of years, but I'm sure that the high school
ranks you as an imposing figure he was.
Speaker 2 (17:49):
And I'm just wondering if you know if that means
something to the young men you're recruiting to play football here,
that this is the alma mater of not just guys
like Devontae Adams and the car Brothers and all that,
but the best baseball player on the planet.
Speaker 4 (18:00):
Well, I think just the.
Speaker 3 (18:02):
Level of the level of athlete that comes out of
the valley here, you know. And again love seeing multi
sport athletes too, and that's one of the things that
I think people will see with our recruiting class this year.
It's not just guys who are just uber focused on football,
but they're great track athletes, basketball, baseball, well rounded. I
think there's a when you recruit individuals like that, the
(18:26):
ceiling is just a little bit higher. You don't know
where it's going to be where if you recruit someone
who's just played football, you're probably maxing them out.
Speaker 4 (18:33):
Already, maybe a little bit at the high school ranks.
Speaker 3 (18:35):
And so we have some tremendously talented young men that
are great leaders in their own institutions right now. We're
going to actually have probably a half dozen of them
join us in January as early enrollees, and so that'll
be fun to be able to get our claws into
them and really get them indoctrinated into what it's like
to be a Bulldog.
Speaker 2 (18:52):
And it's interesting you mentioned the multi sport thing, because
that's actually a big emphasis that Aaron Judge has with
his foundation, with the young people that he mentors because
he played in a you know, real small town in Lyndon.
It's a great basketball and baseball player in addition to
football for the Lions. And you know, the specialization may
take you away from what your real strength is exactly.
(19:14):
Here's a recruiting question that came from Anthony on the
X app. He said, when recruiting, which would you rather
see skill or toughness? And why?
Speaker 3 (19:25):
But I'm gonna I'm gonna get really I'm gonna be
really gray with this answer. I'm gonna say a little
bit of both. I think that's part of both. Those
characteristics are are ones that we put a high priority
on with our recruiting. You know, of course we want
young men that have football IQ and athleticism, but you know,
(19:48):
having that toughness, to willingness to be face tough, to
be physical in a game. Understand that, you know, preparation
for football every day of the year and you only
get to play a small window. It's it's unlike many
other sports out there. But you know, if we do
a good job as coaches, then we'll teach him the skill.
So I guess I would probably say I'd prefer to
have more of the toughness and let us you know,
(20:09):
that's why they call you coach. We'll get them squared
away with the skill and the fundamentals that they're needed
to play and be successful.
Speaker 2 (20:16):
And you know, I've got to say, it's refreshing to
hear you say that, because in the nil transfer portal era,
there's so much purchasing and the idea of if I
have enough money, I'll just buy a finished product, as
opposed to the guys who say, you know what, I
want to change this person's life and actually make them
better when they're done here than they were when they
came in here. Because it used to be all about that, right.
Speaker 3 (20:37):
It was probably part of the reason why I'm in
the game. Why I coach is I had a great
high school coach. I had a great college coach that
was transformational and probably tolerated a little bit of poor
decision making from matt Ense at times and gave me
the tools to be successful. And so I wanted to
get into the profession and do the same thing he did.
(20:58):
And that's what we want to be. We want to
be a a premier development program. We want to recruit
high school kids. Doesn't necessarily mean, we won't dabble with
the junior college ranks and or the transfer portal, but
it has to be the right person. They got, they
got to be wired the right way. They've got to
understand that what's required to be a bulldog, and we're
going to be very protective of that.
Speaker 2 (21:18):
He's coach Matt Ads. We're here at the point Patti
Obar and Bistro, northwest corner of Willow and Knees. It's
not rainy, but this question is about rain. One more
question here before the break. This comes from Greg Lopez
is part of the Quarterback Club. He wants to congratulate
you on that way at Boise State, and Greg asked,
with the possibility of rain this Saturday, will that change
(21:39):
the game plan at all?
Speaker 3 (21:40):
Potentially We've talked a little bit about it, you know.
Unfortunately the rain can impact the game on a lot
of other levels too, So like today and our Thursday practice. Offensively,
we had a wet ball for every snap, just preparing
what ifs and if we can get through it. Today
it was probably the football was probably wetter than it's
(22:00):
like a bucket of water got poured on it before
every snap, so it probably wasn't quite accurate, but they
got the understanding that the ball security is going to
be an issue in a game like this. We got
to make sure we take care of it and so
being able to you know court, you know center quarterback
exchange is going to be critical to get the play started.
Speaker 2 (22:19):
Looking forward to it. Seven thirty Saturday night at Fresno
State and Wyoming at Valley Children Stadium. Only two home
games left these next two Saturdays. Don't miss it. And again,
if you buy an adult ticket, you can get a
kid's ticket free. In fact, you could get two kids
tickets free with each adult ticket you buy at Go

we'll talk about the opponent, the Wyoming Cowboys when we
(22:42):
come back, and then at the top of the hour
we'll have kve On Thunderbird and Jayden Pearson Bulldog linebackers
with us. Here at the Point Patti o'baran bistro for

No matter how large or small your digging project may be,
always call a eight one one before you dig. Eight
one one is the national phone number that notifies your
local utility companies to come out and mark the location
of their buried lines. Damaging buried utility lines can lead
to injury, service outages, and expensive repair costs. This free

service helps you to avoid hitting underground lines in your area,
so before you do any digging, make sure you call
eight one one.

Welcome back to the Bulldog Football Hour with you till
six thirty to night. Here at the Point Patti Obarr
and Bistro, we're hanging out. We've got shelter over our head.
You're not gonna get rained on. It's not raining anyway.
Maybe it will today, Maybe the weather men were wrong
for a change. You never know, but we're joining it
out here at the Point. Coach Ens is here a
couple Bulldog linebackers, Jaden Pearson and kve On Thunderbird will
(26:27):
join us shortly. We're giving away two red seats for
Saturday night, seven thirty kickoff against Wyoming. We also have
a pair of these bobbleheads that'll be giving away at
the gates, seventy five hundred of them Saturday night, So
make sure you're one of those seventy five hundred. Coach,
let's talk about your opponent before we run out of time.
Wyoming comes in with a record of four and five.
The Poks have three games left. They're here, then they
(26:49):
host Nevada, then they have to go to Hawaii, another
team that's still in the mix for a conference title game.
They know they need to win two of those three
to go to a bowl game. They also know this
the last time two teams will be playing each other
in the Mountain West, as Presido State moves on to
the PAC twelve next year. So I'm sure they're going
to be motivated, and they've shown a little more potency
this year. It's certainly a lot of variety on offense.
(27:12):
When you look at Wyoming offensively, what jumps off the
tape for you?
Speaker 3 (27:16):
Well, I think, you know, the solid offensive line, well coached.
They got three running backs that I think all have
a huge upside, and they use them all during the
course of the game. Kind of very similar probably to us,
very similar structure, you know, but they've kind of gone
through a little bit of a play calling change here.
(27:39):
I believe it was pre Colorado State they made a
change at offensive coordinators. So this will only be the
third game that we'll see, so I'm sure there'll be
some nuances, some changes with the new play caller putting
a little bit of his own, you know, personality on
the on the game. But you know, our guys will
be well prepared. I know we've done a really good
job of trying to attack all the areas that we
(27:59):
maybe have struggle defensively during the course of the year
and try to just continually rep those things because as
I've said before, Paul, it becomes a little bit of
a copycat. You know, if someone has success doing this,
someone else is going to try it until they you
prove that you can take it away.
Speaker 2 (28:16):
Yeah, and similar on the other side of the ball
in terms of the parallels between Fresno State and Wyoming.
Wyoming also one of the top three teams in the league.
When it comes to scoring defense, your squad's got a
tremendous job of that as well as taking the football away.
Are there some things that concern you a little bit
when you watch Wyoming's defense?
Speaker 3 (28:33):
I think you know, you know, one of the characteristics
of Wyoming, and again having known I know Jay no
Craig Bowl for a number of years, is that you
know they're going to play really hard. Effort and energy
are going to be two things that they bring to
the table every game. And so I think they do
a really good job of the structure and the defense
(28:56):
that they play. They know the they know the problems
that it creates, they know the answers that if someone
tries to counter with something else. So they're very thorough
in their approach. They don't run it. They don't have
a lot of defense, but what they do they just
do really well. And so we're gonna have to do
a really good job. I think the strength of their
defense is probably their front seven. We've got to do
(29:16):
a really good job of kind of battling that and
trying to get ahead of the chains, and hopefully we
can get into some third shorts. And continue to stack
first downs during the course of the game.
Speaker 2 (29:25):
Saturday at seven thirty is when it kicks off. The
Bulldogs will be wearing special helmets honoring the great Native
American heritage here in the San Joaquin Valley. You've seen
those helmets before with the feather beneath in the red,
white and blue theme. We'll talk more about that in
a bit, and we'll talk more about this topic next week.
But I want to ask you real quick because the
news came out this week. The images came out of
(29:47):
the really unique jerseys that you'll wear on Senior Day
against Utah State that integrate a whole lot of things,
including the agricultural riches of the San Joaquin Valley. I
know you've got priority and you're focused on Wyoming, but
have you picked up a little bit of the buzz
about those white out jerseys with the green numbers and
the different crops interlaid with them.
Speaker 4 (30:07):
Well, I hope there's a buzz.
Speaker 3 (30:08):
I remember when we were kind of going through the
process and putting some ideas together, and I believe all
of the digits zero through nine all kind of have
their own little theme, uh, you know, regarding the ag
in the in the area.
Speaker 4 (30:22):
But I think it's a neat deal.
Speaker 3 (30:24):
You know, I've been, I've been, you know, growing up
being a native of Iowa. Remember when Hayden Fry started
the a n F. When I was at North Dakota State,
we had a Harvest Bowl game where instead of a
normal stripe down the middle.
Speaker 4 (30:37):
It was a wheat. It was a piece of wheat.
Speaker 3 (30:40):
And so I think this is a neat deal to
be able to celebrate the ag not just in this region,
but you know, being one of the premier agricultural schools
in the country. Again, I think, just another big shot
in the arm and people being proud of where we're
from and in the valley and our toughness and grit
and blue collar ment.
Speaker 4 (31:00):
We have here.
Speaker 2 (31:01):
And I haven't seen, you know, every digit zero through
nine to see every crop that's featured. But hearing you
say that, I'm just wondering, do you know if the
crop that Iowa was most famous for that there's a
variety grown up on the Fresno State campus that people
line up around the block to get every year.
Speaker 4 (31:18):
This week, I do.
Speaker 3 (31:19):
I went to the the what is it, the the
store on campus, the Gibson Farm market. Yep, and there
was people men surrounding, you know, getting the right.
Speaker 4 (31:31):
Ears and being very selective. So it was fun to see.
Speaker 2 (31:36):
So do you know if there's an ear of corn
on one of those numbers?
Speaker 4 (31:38):
I believe there is.
Speaker 2 (31:39):
All right, Sorry for the courting question, Coach, anything else
that you want the Red Wave to hear before things
fire up Saturday night.
Speaker 3 (31:48):
Show up, be loud, get involved in the game. Bring
your energy, because that's what we're telling our guys is
bring your energy. We've you know, I know you you've
asked me about it a little bit, same same policy
this week. Get it corrected on the sideline, get our
guys engaged, Red Wave, get off your phone, let's get
get involved in the game, and let's let's do this together.
Speaker 2 (32:09):
Maybe we should have Pat Hill record a video get
off your phone, like shut up and hit somebody. Remember that.
Maybe it would have worked well. Coach, congrats again on
the big win and Boysey, good luck get number seven
on Saturday.
Speaker 4 (32:20):
I appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (32:21):
That's Matt ads with us here the Bulldog Football Hour

And yeah, we're dry, we're comfortable. They even have the

They look pretty toasty? Boy, the Bulldogs were better than
warm and boise. They were red hot and that thirty
(36:09):
to seven dominating victory on the Blue over the Broncos
to become Bowl eligible and put themselves right back in
the thick of the conference title race. We're going to
talk to a couple of those Bulldogs right now. Thanks
again to coach An's for coming out. He'll be here
next week. That'll be our final regular season show next Thursday,
November twentieth, from five thirty to six thirty here at
(36:30):
the Point Pattio Bar and Bistro. So we have Jayden
Pearson and kve On Thunderbird with us. Now, guys, you
eating here a time or two before? No, I've never
been here, so first time try it?
Speaker 4 (36:41):
Yeah? First time?
Speaker 2 (36:41):
Did you already order?
Speaker 4 (36:42):
I did?
Speaker 2 (36:43):
I got some salmon, salmon New New York stay, good choice.
Everything here is really good. Hope you guys enjoy it. Jayden,
let's start with you because you played in that game,
and Boyse, you played really well in that game in Boise,
leading tackler for the team on the season. We talked
about you guys playing for each other in that game.
(37:03):
Did it feel any different than the rest of the
games you've played in for Fresnos Day.
Speaker 23 (37:09):
I don't think we really did anything that much different,
except I think we demanded more from each other. You know,
have those uncomfortable conversations throughout the week, like Hey, I
need you in this spot, I need you in that spot.
So I think when you hashed that out throughout the week,
you're able to play a lot faster on Saturdays.
Speaker 2 (37:26):
And I want to come back to that Boise game
with you, But I want you to tell me what
you've appreciated about the young man sitting next to you here, Kveon.
He hasn't been able to play the last couple weeks
after the arm injury, but you guys terrorized a lot
of teams together there for a while. How much fun
has it been getting to know him and watch them
do his thing? Yeah, you know, we both came in
at the same time. Ironically, we were both one of
(37:47):
like the last people clears, so we were lifting on
our own together and that's kind of how the relationship started.
But it's been a tremendous journey, you know, throughout spring
and fall camp and then actually getting those game reps together.
So you know, as the games went on, we just
kept clicking a lot more. You know, it's unfortunate what happened.
Speaker 23 (38:05):
I wish we could, you know, you know, keep playing
every single week, but that's just not the way the
cards were dealt.
Speaker 2 (38:11):
But yeah, it's been It's been.
Speaker 23 (38:14):
Just really nice to have someone that I can truly
depend on every single snap to handle that side of
the field.
Speaker 2 (38:21):
And Kveon, let's hear from you. What has Jaden meant
to you and the team? What have you appreciated about
number thirty nine over here?
Speaker 24 (38:29):
He's a He's definitely a great leader on the team.
I feel like me and him bit a bomb when
we first came in lifting together. Once again, it was
least to get clear, manft just get it going. We
just push each other every day, make sure each other
on top of the game. We wake up in the
morning and some one of us tired. We just push
(38:49):
each other every day. So yeah, I appreciate him for
that for sure.
Speaker 2 (38:52):
And I know you're from Chicago, but you were playing
the last couple of years at a school in Jaden's
backyard there in Arizona. You guys, figure out any small
world connections you have or anything.
Speaker 24 (39:02):
Yeah, we was talking about food the other day. I
practice restaurants and stuff, these things like that. Yeah, we
definitely familiar with everything. He stay close by.
Speaker 2 (39:11):
So, yeah, what's what's your go to restaurant in Phoenix.
Speaker 24 (39:14):
Uh, I'm from Chicago, so I like Portillo's. Yeah, Portillo's
out there. I'll be going there a lot. Portillo's.
Speaker 2 (39:21):
Every friend I have from Chicago just swears by Portillo's.
That one right by Disneyland too. I don't know if
you know that.
Speaker 24 (39:27):
I don't try.
Speaker 2 (39:28):
When you go to Disneyland. I guess you know what
to do. You have a favorite spot back home, Jayden?
Uh No, not really. I kind of just like when
my mom cooks. Well, I'm glad you brought up your
mom because yeah, it's a good answer. Yeah, and hopefully
the point tastes like home cooking tonight for you guys.
You brought up your mom and I saw you with
your mom after the Boise State game posing for pictures
(39:49):
with that milk can trophy. You and I have talked
about this before, what your mom has meant to you
and what your father's memory means to you, And I
think that's another bond that you two share, that you
can identify with each other about. For people who don't
know this story, can you tell us why you wear
that number thirty nine?
Speaker 23 (40:08):
Yeah, So, in February of two thousand and eight, my
father passed away from leukemia, and he was the number
one driving force for me starting the game of football. Like,
I wasn't really watching cartoons. I was watching NFL Network
with him, and we put on you know, ray Lewis Dave.
I was watching Larry Johnson, that running back, you know,
just just those figures. At a young age, that's what
(40:30):
propelled my love for the game. So as soon as
I was old enough, you kind of hit like nine,
ten years old, you start kind of gravitorying toward a
number you want to wear.
Speaker 2 (40:38):
I really wanted to war thirty nine to honor him
because he was thirty nine when he died. Yes, yes,
I forgot that keithing tail.
Speaker 10 (40:45):
No.
Speaker 2 (40:45):
I mean some people may have known already, but I
mean that's that's not a small detail. My father died
when he was fifty one, and his memory inspires me.
So I can see that in the way you play.
And you've shared with me too. Your mom, who's a
track coach I believe, has been so one who pushes
you pretty hard too.
Speaker 23 (41:01):
Oh yeah, she was actually my track coach in high school.
She's still coaching in my high school to this day.
So huh yeah, she's She's not the lovey w coach.
Speaker 2 (41:08):
I tell you that she didn't take it easy on you.
Oh never.
Speaker 23 (41:11):
I probably got the I probably got it the worst,
the highest expectations.
Speaker 2 (41:15):
That's usually how it works out. We can talk to
Kevin Sweeney about that. It's a Bulldog football reference. We
have Jaden Pearson and Kvean Thunderbird, two Bulldog linebackers. And
speaking of family, Cavean, you shared something with me earlier
this year that's relevant to the theme. This Saturday Night,
it's Native American Heritage Night. Even though you don't get
to playing this game, you can still have a helmet
(41:36):
with a Native American feather on there, and you can
get one of these bubbleheads we're giving away tonight. Tell
everybody what your connection to the Native American community is yep.
Speaker 24 (41:47):
So my last name is Thunderberry is Native America. My
grandmother heard your father her father, he was Native American
from talk Tak Tak Tak tribe. So yeah, I'm not
really sure much about like background, like where he came
from and things like that. She was actually separated at
a young age from him, So I'm not really sure.
(42:07):
But that's definitely what let us named Thunderbergh came from.
Speaker 2 (42:11):
Yeah, And you know that's one of those things that
even if you don't know all the details, it sounds
like you take some pride in that.
Speaker 4 (42:17):
Yeah, definitely.
Speaker 2 (42:21):
And for people who don't know how you got hurt,
why don't you walk us through that injury and and
how you've been handling it in the week since it happened.
Speaker 4 (42:29):
Man so u Colorado State.
Speaker 24 (42:32):
I was running down the sideline, made a tackle then
like my arm got caught, got caught like in a turf,
and I got up. I was feeling like I don't
know my arm, I felt numbnous, tat to run, couldn't run,
went down and that was that. But I definitely been
trying to get back. Just had surgery. Everything went great,
so thank God for that. Just been trying to get
(42:55):
back treatment, just trying to get everything moving, everything back.
Speaker 2 (42:58):
So I bet so well we will look forward to
that and yeah, you play for that, Jade, and I'm
just gonna go out on a limb and guess that
even though Kveon can't go out on the field, he's
still making some contributions to the defense.
Speaker 4 (43:16):
You know.
Speaker 23 (43:16):
Uh, whenever he's at Praice, he's helped with the young
linebackers like Titus Kjavi and Logan Steell getting into that
mic position. So you know, that's always essential to have
essentially a whole other coach right then and there.
Speaker 2 (43:30):
And then now that it's.
Speaker 23 (43:32):
A home game this weekend, that's just someone else that
can deliver the same message a little bit differently than
how our coach went on Saturdays, you know, so that
that's extremely crucial to.
Speaker 2 (43:43):
What we need to win for in the linebacker room.
I've got another question coming in from the X app
for both of you, if I find it again. This
was Chris X and he says, how is the team's
morale at this point in the season and what is
the driving force to finish strong.
Speaker 23 (44:07):
I'll definitely say that our team's morale is pretty high
right now. You know, we have a great opportunity to
compete for the Mountain Wins Championship right now, but you know,
right now we're focused on our on this next opponent,
uh Wyoming coach benedetto our defensive coordinator. Starting with the
boys a week we had you know, round one, round
(44:27):
two and so on, and so right now it's all
it's been all about round two. How are we gonna
get better within this week? How are we going to
be able to show up on Saturday and do our
jobs to the best of our ability. So you know,
everyone's been doing their their due diligence. You know, we're
all in as the back end, the back seven. We're
(44:48):
in the film room together a lot, and you know
we're we're just starting that that communication up now for Saturday.
So I think it's really really well right now, kV.
Speaker 2 (45:00):
And you have anything you want to add to that
about how the team's feeling and where the focus is.
Speaker 24 (45:03):
Yeah, definitely, I feel like our team around is very
high right now. I just see guys come in every day,
try to watch extra film, getting with coaches, even guys
I'm sidline asking me questions, what's this fear how do
I fit this up? And I think that's real good
guys just asking questions late, knowing the position that we
in right now, So I definitely think it's very.
Speaker 2 (45:23):
D And how do you see your role on the
team the rest of the way, or at least for now,
when you can't go out there and hit somebody or
get a pick or cause havoc between the lines, how
do you see your way of contributing?
Speaker 24 (45:36):
Just been there for the guys, been there for my team,
those guys held it down. Was there my bad days
and my good days. So I'm just it's just correct
to be there for them and just show the same
appreciation for them through whatever, coaching them up or just
helping them out, just showing them love for making a
good play, bad play.
Speaker 4 (45:55):
Things like that.
Speaker 2 (45:57):
And one more for you before before we take the break.
Watching your teammates do what they did on that blue turf?
What was that like for you?
Speaker 4 (46:07):
Man? That was great? I was yelling at the TV
a TV. They was doing good though.
Speaker 24 (46:12):
My boy's out there bating, Tita's got a peak, JP
was out there, ballin, Logan gouss some playing time. Everybody
on defense, bought out on the offense did great, So yeah,
I was definitely don't want TV for No.
Speaker 8 (46:23):
You weren't alone. I think some of the people here
were yelling at their TVs too.
Speaker 2 (46:27):
I want to talk to you guys about Presno State's
offense when we come back, because who knows the bulldog

It's a cris clear burst of lemon love flavor and
it's caffeine free.

Between us, one of you must be a little more
important to story than the other. Who is it? We're
both important, so we could just as easily be Starry
lime lemon soda.
Speaker 7 (49:17):
No, that doesn't sound right. Oh, I like it so
you saying hip hop could be hop hit works for me.
Speaker 6 (49:22):
Storry lemon lime soda, Storry Kit's different.
Speaker 10 (49:25):

Speaker 12 (50:00):
Welcome back to Bulldog Football Hour.
Speaker 2 (50:01):
About ten minutes left here at the Point patti Obaran Bistro,
northwest corner of Willow and Knees. They've got some good food.
Jaden Pearson and Kveon Thunderbird are gonna taste it in
a little bit their first time here, so I'm sure
they take recommendations, but I think they already ordered, and
I know the Point will show up for you guys,
like the Red Wave is going to show up Saturday
night at seven point thirty Native American Heritage Night special
(50:25):
giveaways seventy five hundred bobble heads. The first seventy of
five hundred through the gates. We've got two of them
to give away here tonight. If you buy an adult ticket,
you can get up to two kids tickets free. We
talked with Kaveon, who has a little Choktaw heritage and
his lineage about Native American Heritage Night. I got to
ask you guys not to get ahead. We're not getting
(50:45):
ahead of the opponent. It's all about Wyoming. But we
can get ahead with uniforms because there was this little
uniform drop I think is how they call it these days.
Yesterday with the whiteout jerseys for Senior Day against a
team that Jayden knows a little bit about your first
reaction when you guys saw those wide out ag themed
Senior Day jerseys for the first time.
Speaker 23 (51:07):
My thought is is that I'm never really Warren Green
ever so Ever, I've never been on a team that's
ever had Green on it, So that was like the
first thought. I love the idea behind it, you know,
the value is such a big part of our program
and our university, so I think it's a great way
to showcase that.
Speaker 2 (51:23):
Have you checked out? Like, what's on your numbers yet?
Speaker 4 (51:26):
No?
Speaker 2 (51:26):
I haven't. I'm kind of trying to keep that a
surprise for myself. All right, wait till next week. Sorry
for putting it the thought in your head. I'm sure
you have some self disciplined in patience to wait till
next week. Kevian, what about for you? Have you ever
wearing green before?
Speaker 3 (51:39):
No?
Speaker 24 (51:39):
I actually never wear green, no green uniforms. This is
my first time. So when I first into jerseys, I
was like, Wow, they pretty cool. Different color, they definitely different,
but yeah, they definitely nice. I think it definitely represents
the greenvie for sure.
Speaker 2 (51:54):
So yeah, and I promised I was going to ask
you guys about your teammates on the offensive side of
the but there's some news today and we want to
be timely too. A guy named Aaron Judge just won
his third most Valuable Player in Major League Baseball. Came on,
you told me you were a pretty good baseball player
back in the day. Yeah, do you play some baseball too, Jayden?
Speaker 23 (52:15):
I played baseball long enough to know that I can't
hit a curveball, and I got on the track, so
not that long I was probably in like sixth grade
when I stopped playing.
Speaker 2 (52:23):
But all right, great sport, though it's not my sport.
So I was talking to coach Ance. You know, do
recruits talk about that? What about for you guys, especially
not being from here, they haven't. Family and other parts
of the country. Have they figured out yet that you
go to the school that produced Aaron Judge?
Speaker 24 (52:37):
I don't think everybody more of family knows that. Actually,
I know my younger brother does. He actually played baseball,
so yeah, he's a big fan of Aaron Judge.
Speaker 2 (52:45):
Yes, I don't think so.
Speaker 23 (52:48):
My family Actually, I think my aunt and cousin might
because they're huge baseball fans. I haven't really spoken to
them about it, but I wouldn't be surprised if they
knew that at all. But my but my immediate family
is like football and track. That's our entire family's focus.
Speaker 2 (53:05):
So and what was your best track event? Jane? Uh,
the one ten high hurdles? That was my best event?
Did you see that hurdle in the Was that the
Monday night game?
Speaker 4 (53:15):
The other night?
Speaker 2 (53:17):
Jalen Warren in the Steelers game? I didn't. I did
not see that. He had some pretty good hurdling form.
I think your mom would approve. He had that, you know,
the front leg out and the knee bent clearing a
guy's helmet. Hey, right there, it was. It was something
So I wanted to ask you by guys about the
offense and coach Ens and I were talking earlier how
there's a parallel here between Wyoming and Fresno State. Wyoming
(53:38):
has three running backs who share the load there and
lately it's kind of turned into that between Bryce and
Donaldson and Speedy Luke and of course Brandon Sanchez, Brandon Ramirez.
That's another player, Brandon Ramirez. And then we still get
Elijah Gilliam in there. He scored a touchdown in Boise State.
I was wondering for you guys, maybe you can put
in perspective for us the challenges that versatility in Fresno
(54:03):
State's run game poses for defenses, because you guys have
to figure it out when you're going on eleven on eleven. So,
could you guys give me a breakdown of how different
and unique those backs are and what makes them so
hard to bring down?
Speaker 23 (54:17):
Yeah, I would definitely say is when you get the
call and you line up and you're talking to the
next man, like i'd be talking to Kat. You really
want to know who's in the backfield and you want
to know the situation. So you know, there's a bunch
of different approaches to the variety of running backs we have.
So that's kind of the thought process that you have
(54:38):
to take and just apply your skill set to how
can you win against them?
Speaker 2 (54:44):
Got something to add to that.
Speaker 24 (54:45):
Uh yeah, same thing what he said, Just depending on
what back then we just communicate it, just to communicate
how we got align in certain ways depending on who's in.
Speedy's in might just aliant, like align wider or something
because he's pretty fast. It's different, different for all the backs,
but yeah, they definitely come out and compete with us
all the year alone.
Speaker 2 (55:07):
What about if you see the quarterback under center and
ram man seven yards deep, what do you embrace them
for with that?
Speaker 23 (55:14):
I'm thinking run, get ready to engage with a big
old lineman and get off the block past.
Speaker 2 (55:21):
There might be a bit of a collision in there somewhere.
Speaker 4 (55:23):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (55:24):
Best part of the game.
Speaker 4 (55:26):
Best part.
Speaker 2 (55:28):
What if you I mean, you guys are brand new
to this program, but you seem so comfortable already and Jade,
and you were even voted team captain when you had
barely gotten it. You guys even said your.
Speaker 8 (55:37):
Last two what have you appreciated the most about your
teammates and what are some of the things that have
made you feel like family?
Speaker 2 (55:46):
So quickly?
Speaker 23 (55:47):
Yeah, uh, transferring in. I knew I wanted to come
to Presdent State for the pride and tradition. You know,
this school has a lot of tradition to it. You know,
they win, they win championships, they send dues to the
league on a consistent basis, and I knew that I
wanted to become a part of a winning program. And
(56:07):
when I got here, I just felt like the guys
really just really just took me in. There was no animosity,
you know, in the position room, in the unit, it
was it was super seamless. And once we actually got
on the football field, that's when it really felt like, Yeah,
this was a great decision because now these are some
of the best friends I have.
Speaker 2 (56:29):
Yeah, I guess one of them's right here. One more
question on that for you, Jayden, before we go on
to k T you played a year at Ridley College
at that time, playing for the Tigers. Did you soak
up a little bit of the red wave and how
big a deal Fresno State is in the valley.
Speaker 23 (56:46):
Oh yeah, I actually remember the first time I drove
into Fresno. The only way I knew Fresne State was
because of Derek Carr. And my best friend was a
Raiders fan and he was always talking about Derek Carr.
Speaker 2 (56:57):
So I was like, Okay, this is.
Speaker 23 (56:59):
You know, the home that Derek cart built, essentially and
DeVante Adams And so when I got to Redley, I
was I was immediately shook by the amount of fog
that happens all the time out here. I have never
driven in fog a day in my life, so that
was very different. But you know, just living so close
to Fresno and you know, I would go to a
(57:21):
couple of games. I went to their spring game and
I saw how many fans were there, and I saw
how big of a deal that the football team was.
That's that was like my first and that was my
first introduction into what Fresno State football was all about.
Speaker 2 (57:34):
And since you brought up the fog, I've got to
ask you, since you're from Phoenix, how does the fog
compare to one of those famous giant monumental dust storms
they call haboobs out there.
Speaker 4 (57:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 23 (57:44):
Hey, Katine knows a little bit about haboobs too, being
an Arizona.
Speaker 2 (57:47):
I guess so.
Speaker 23 (57:48):
Yeah, But you know, I would rather be in a
haboob than fog, because fogg seems it's like there for
a while. Sometimes that's anywhere where the hoboob, you know,
it's five to ten minutes and then you just get
back to what you were doing.
Speaker 2 (58:01):
So, KT, what did you despise more of the haboob
or the blizzard in Chicago?
Speaker 4 (58:05):
Uh?
Speaker 24 (58:06):
I think the haboob we had was like, look crazy.
I think Chicago definitely, we get like snowstorms and stuff
like that, so they get real cold in Chicago.
Speaker 2 (58:15):
And I want to come back to that idea of
what has made you feel like families so fast here?
Is there something the coaches have done that your teammates
have done, or maybe the red Wave has done. It's
made you feel so welcome and in the right place.
Speaker 4 (58:27):
Yeah, definitely.
Speaker 24 (58:27):
When I came in, everybody just showed me love, just
welcomed me with open arms. When I came in, everybody,
I just got to know everybody, just know everybody's background,
and like where everybody come from. Just get to know everybody,
and that's how I feel like we all just vibe
as a teams, like connect with the offense, the defense.
That's why I think we're such a good team, just
connecting with each other.
Speaker 2 (58:48):
And we're getting short on time here, and the season
has the sand running out of the hour glass for Jaden,
and the sand in your career hour glass in college
is starting to run real thin. Three games left in
the regular season, and we'll see what else follows, whether
it's a conference championship game, before the bowl game or not.
In the last minute here, what do you guys think
is going to make the difference to try to make
(59:09):
this a championship team.
Speaker 23 (59:12):
I think when you align correctly, you put your eyes
in the right place, and you just play with a
relentless passion for the game, like that'll cover up a
lot of errors and it'll make you a lot of
plays too. So you know, I think as a team,
when we try to focus a little bit more on
the details throughout the practice week, that'll translate to Saturday
(59:35):
a lot more seamless, and I think that that'll help
the outcome overall.
Speaker 2 (59:41):
And I guess you get to help them stay focused
on those details in practice.
Speaker 4 (59:44):
Huh yep, definitely.
Speaker 2 (59:45):
Coach Thunderbird hard at work. Jade and Kveon, thanks so much,
good luck Saturday Night. Thanks for sure, Jayden Pearson, kve
