(00:00):
It's Erica DeLong for the Carolina PodcastNetwork All Things Carolina's and today I am
honored to sit down with doctor Lanewith a Lane and Associates Family Dentistry.
Doctor Lane is so much fun tobe around. So you got to go
into one of their offices because thestaff is the same way. But we're
talking about keeping those pearly whites clean. Doctor Lane welcome. First of all,
(00:21):
hey, thank you very much.Good to be here. So what
is the best way to scrub thoseteeth? And does it have to be
twice a day? The best way, first of all, is not to
scrub them, but to brush themgently. I've been telling my kids the
wrong thing. Up and down parallelto the long axis of the tooth and
not perpendicular, or you'll cut groovesin the very top where the gum and
(00:43):
the tooth sit. Oh, Ididn't realize that. And besides brushing,
I want you to flaws once aday. Okay, So what if you
don't floss every day because I've beentold in the past you need to flyass
and I'm lazy at it. Idon't have any cavities, My teeth are
clean. Lazy. Well, whenyou're forty five or fifty and you have
(01:03):
paradonal disease, come see me,because then I'll be able to charge you
a lot of money to fix theproblems you have because you didn't floss floss
your teeth. See this is thepart people don't listen about prevention. But
somebody, I think Benjamin Franklin orsomebody smart, said announce the prevention's worth
a pound of cure. If peopledid what we told them, we'd be
(01:26):
out of business, and I'd behappy. I'd go do something else.
Floss your teeth because it gets allthe bacteria and gunk out from between the
teeth that the toothbrush doesn't reach, and it prevents paradonal disease, which bacteria
between there byproducts of the bacteria eating, and whatever bacteria do in there causes
tons of inflammation. The inflammation causesgum recession and bone recession, and pretty
(01:52):
soon you have loose teeth. Soin fact, I had a patient one
time ask me, would you ratherbe floss or brush? I said,
oh, no question, I'd ratheryou flaws because when your breath stinks and
your teeth turned green from not brushing, you'll start brushing because everybody'll tell you,
but nobody tells you to floss, floss, flaws loss on' What about
mouthwashed? Is that also important? It's great to use mouthwash for breath and
(02:13):
for killing some bacteria, but youknow the bacteria we kill re establish colonization
within just a little while. Soanything you can do to be an adjunct
to flossing and brushing is great. But one and two Russian floss? Now?
Is there a certain flows? BecauseI've seen the different kinds of thick
kind or the picks. Whatever yourmost comfortable using, Okay, whatever works
(02:36):
best for you. I would notuse waxed floss because some people suggest that
leaves waxy film on the interproximate areasof the teeth and that you know holds
bacteria and holds other food to brisdstuff. So I like the wax floss.
I use the wax lous, butI know how to clean it out,
so I don't care what you use, just do it. I don't
care if you use souls. They'rereally going to have some at work from
here on out, because you've scaredme now, I don't want to come
(02:58):
see for the what that plaks ADonald who paradonal disease. I don't love
that. Don't promise you don't,okay. And also a lot of people
always complain about their teeth not beingwhite. You offer free whitening for life
when you're if you're a patient ofours, we do. Whitening is cool,
it works great. Some people arevery very sensitive, I being one
of them, so I don't whitenmy teeth because I have to go to
(03:20):
bed. It hurts so bad. Some depending upon the porosity of you enamel
and depending upon what's how strong thewhitener you're using is, there's a lot
of issues involved. So, butwhitening does work well, but it's not
a permanent solution. Human beings alwayswant something better than they have. Sometimes
it's not appropriate to whiten teeth ifsome people are white and beautiful and they
just want them whiter. Whitening isfor ninety percent of the people, is
(03:44):
fine, and it works, andit's a great adjunct to dental therapy,
but it really doesn't do a lotfor dental health. It does a lot
for your for your ego and yourpsyche. When you say it's not for
everybody, not everybody can whiten theirteeth. Well, they cannot because some
people it's just too painful. Andsome people really don't need it even though
they think they do, and Idon't. We don't like to do stuff
(04:06):
just to do it or for money, And with our regular patients, we
whiten for free, so it's notfor money. But if you don't need
it, we'll tell you. Somepeople want they have like very shiny,
beautiful enamel and it's porcelain like andit's beautiful, but they want them to
be just a little whiter. Someteeth aren't going to get just a little
whiter, right, you know. And that is another question I've always wondered,
(04:28):
if you whiten your teeth too often, does that take the enamel off
of your teeth? It doesn't takethe enamel off whitening your teeth, but
it can make them very very verysensitive. Okay, And then what about
the store brands, because sometimes we'vealways heard like it would cost not it
lame, but it would cost alot to get them professionally whitened. Our
store brands effective or just as goodunprofessionally. And we have intense light that
(04:51):
we put on our whitening material tofacilitate and expedite the whitening, but it's
way more intense. You probably won'tbe as sensitive with something like Chris strips
or something else, and it won't. But Chris strips won't last as long.
Right, But any whitening is goingto stay with things like blueberries and
tea and coffee and cigarettes and cigarsand tobacco too. Any any whitening is
(05:16):
going to be diminished by those typesof things in your own environment. Lane
In associates Family Dentistry. Sitting downwith doctor Elaine himself and you work with
the entire family. What are yourtop three tips to keep your mouth as
clean and healthy as possible? Lossing, brushing, three, don't eat,
never eat? Okay, So usinga straw is that important because I hate
straws Because I hate straws too, especially those paper ones. They like bread.
(05:42):
I know it's good, but mymouth can't take those paper straws.
Flossing and brushing, and using atopical fluoride for children and people even under
twenty one years old is that importantas an adult or No? I still
do flora treat That's not bad, that's good, that's really good. You
know, fluoride makes tooth and aimlvery resistant to decay much more. It's
(06:06):
the hydroxy appetite becomes floor appetite, and it becomes very much more resistant to
the acid and oral cavity. Soit helps a lot. There's always been
a big debate about any kind ofindicaments. People say oral systemic fluorides are
not good. Don't give your kidsfloor. You know what I gave my
kids fluoride. I'm a scientist too. My kids are okay, they're forty
(06:30):
eight and forty two now, they'restill healthy. The floor. I didn't
give them any you know, geneticabnormality or anything else. So fluoride for
little kids. If you have wellwater tests the well water with the county
Health department, if there's less thanone part per million, give them fluoride.
Thank you so much, doctor Lane, You're welcome. Thank you.
