(00:00):
It's Erica DeLong for the Carolina PodcastNetwork All Things Carolina's and today we sit
down with doctor Rollie Wright with Lanein Associates Family Dentistry. They are the
official dentist for the Carolina Hurricanes. What is that like, Doctor Wright?
Yeah, it's it's meat. Imean, it's interesting, it's also stressful.
I mean, you know, obviously, you know when I used to
watch hockey and I'm not I mean, don't well, I guess everybody's gonna

(00:23):
hear this, but I wasn't ahuge hockey fan before, right, But
when I would watch hockey games before, I like the fighting. And now
when they start fighting, I'm like, don't hit him in the face.
Don't hit him in the face. How did Lane and Associates become the official
dentists for the Carolina Hurricanes. Soour marketing team with Stephanie, She's like,
whoo, whoo, I'm at studio. We were already sponsors with the

(00:44):
Hurricanes, and they kind of approachedus and we hit it off. I
know you had said that there wasmultiple meetings to prove that you were professional,
you know, confidentiality with the players. Did they see you not only
on the ice but off the icetoo. Right, as they've gotten to
know us and we get to knowthem more, they feel more comfortable and
so they you know, see familymembers. We also see you know,
the other hillaries, the trainers. Are you Are you working on Don Waldell?

(01:07):
Yeah, I say, but hewould be an awesome patient to have.
I'm sure means shower nice guy.I'm gonna say he is a very
very nice guy. He really is. And see that's one of the reasons
why Lanin Associates is the official dentistfor the Carolina Hurricanes. You keep your
promise, you stay professional. Compidentialityis super important. Now, one thing
about hockey players. At some pointin their career, they are going to

(01:30):
lose a tooth, badge of honorfor them, you know, the mine
missing teeth. My wife saw oneof the players who's missing quite a few
teeth on one of the ads andshe said, you got to get him
some teeth in there. That's badadvertisement for Lana and so so I told
him that. He just laughed aboutit. So did they ever get veneers
or say their teeth are knocked outpermanently? So there are some things that

(01:51):
we've done for some of the playersand we have made it's called a snap
on smiles. It's like a littlething that you can kind of design and
make it as well as you want, or you know, make the teeth
the shapes you want. It's kindof a temporary fix until most of the
players are going to wait till theyretire to get permanent you know, implants
and full restorations. But yeah,we can do temporary things like that to

(02:13):
make them normal, I guess, but hockey players normal is missing teeth.
So, right, do you havea favorite player? Well, so does
your family have a favorite player?Mentioned? That might be a question,
and I thought about you know,I really I really like most of the
players, and it's really interesting toget to know them and to talk to
them in the locker room and stuff. And you know, I love Jarvis.

(02:35):
I mean, who can't love Jarvis. I mean, his his personality.
He's he's like a little kid runningaround. He's so playful and so
friendly. You know, you havethe players like Aho and my favorite,
yeah, especially Coff. I meanthey're just very, very nice and down
to earth people. But I wouldsay, if I had if you twisted
my arm and said, who's yourvery very favorite, I would have to

(02:55):
say Anti Ronta. Oh, yes, in the stand people love he has
little kids, and anytime Without'm talkingto him in the locker room something,
I'll bring up his kids and hiswife and stuff, and his eyes lightening
up and you can tell he's justa he's a great dad and he loves
his kids and his wife. Andso I appreciate that because I have four
children, so I understand where he'scoming from. And he loves his kids.

(03:19):
So you see a different side thanthose that are watching at PNC Arena,
you know, you get to seethe normalcy of these guys. They're
just like us. They just play, you know, a sport that makes
him a lot of money, havea lot more money. Yeah, right,
right, So are there times thatyou'll service other people? Maybe there's
other emergencies that happen outside of theplayers. Yeah, so well, And

(03:39):
one time one of the officials inthe game got hit in the mouth and
doctor Lane had to help him outa little bit, okay. And then
we had one time that there wasprior to the game during the tailgating,
and all the kids play in theparking lot and stuff, and I guess
they play with the little fake pucksand stuff, and one little kid got
hit in the mouth with the puckand Doctor Bailey was at that game and

(04:00):
he actually brought him into the operatorythere we and he kind of patched him
up and then we saw him andfixed his teeth later that week. So
how cool though you were like, yeah, I was in the official dentist
office of the Canes because I'm notto tooth out. That's like a little
honor to get that. What isyour favorite thing about being the official dentist
for the Canes? You know,it's just fun being part of the whole,

(04:23):
you know, especially during playoffs andstuff. And I mean it's so
exciting. And I mean, youknow, you walk out on you know,
near the ice, you know,we're kind of in the tunnel area
and you walk out there and yousee the fans that are just so excited,
and you know, you drive upon game day and you know everybody's
out, you know, doing tailgatingand stuff. And I'm so proud of
North Carolina, you know, forsupporting the team like that. And it's

(04:44):
just a lot of fun. Imean, it's just the fun of it
and just being a part of it. No, wait, what time do
you get there because the traffic isnuts before and after, So do you
have to get there early and doyou leave super late? We're usually a
couple of hours before the game.We meet in the locker room in case
there's anything that needs to be adres before the game, and then we
have to stay after because sometimes they'llget elbowed or something during the game.

(05:05):
They don't really pay much attention toit because they're in the throes of battle.
So they're out there fighting and stuff. So they get in the locker
room, take a shower and they'relike, oh, yeah, by the
way, I knocked this tooth loose, and so we did say we say
an hour or so after the game. Usually, do you have a dentist
kit that you travel with? Like, how do you have all the things
that you need on hand? Wehave everything there, you know, all

(05:25):
their instruments and hand piece and everythingthat we need to do any anything we
need to do. Lanin Associates FamilyDentistry, the official dentists for the Carolina
or Hurricanes. But we have doctorRaleigh Wright, which I love your name.
What inspired just to talk about youa little bit? What inspired your
name? Because this is one ofthe coolest names ever, especially living here.
Well, I'm a third and somy grandfather was the first Raleigh and

(05:46):
in our family, I guess, and my father was junior, and so
it's a family name, and Iguess back in the nineteen early nineteen hundreds
it was a normal name for Raleigh. Yeah, yeah, name So doctor
Wright in studio with Lanin Associates FamilyDentistry. What got you started in dentistry?
Well, my father in law isa retired dentist and okay, and
so he he was kind of amentor to me. He actually told me

(06:10):
not to go into dentistry because inthe early eighties and mid eighties when I
was in school, there were alot of things going on in dentistry changeing,
and that was a change for him. But I saw that he was
in a nice house and played golfthree or four days a week, and
I was like, that's a prettycool life. You know, I might
want to Yeah, I don't getto play GoF But you said your father
in law, So you were withyour wife? What through college? We

(06:32):
met in college? Okay, allright, through her brother. Very cool.
What has been your favorite part aboutbeing a dentist in this area just
helping people. You know, it'sa it's a job where you can every
day you get to help a person, you know, whether it's someone in
pain or someone that you know, make their smile prettier or you know,
I mean you really just it's apeople's occupation. I mean, you get

(06:55):
to do stuff for people all thetime. And doctor Lane was in here
not long ago talking about gen rationalpatients. Grandmas and the green kids are
all there. That's a lot offun too. And to watch little bit
of kids that you see when they'relittle and they scream and wiggle in the
chair and they don't want to bethere, and then they grow up and
they get married and they have theirown little kids. And so, not
to tell my age, I'm alittle younger than doctor Lane, but yes,

(07:15):
I do have some families that reallylove seeing too. And you have
four kids. You said, sodo they allow you to work on their
teeth or no, Dad can't touchtheir teeth. They prefer for me not
to. Actually, yeah, mostof my kids they've all had orthodonic treatment
through doctor Cren who's one of ourorthodonists, and they want him to do
all of their dental work, eventhough he doesn't do general dentistry, but

(07:38):
they're like, can't doctor Crenn domy feeling? You know? And so
no, but yeah, I've donesome work on them, but they would
prefer somebody else. I mean,it's just kind of weird. I guess
for your dad to be working onit, right, I love that all
right? So Lane in Associates Familydentistry locations serving all over North Carolina started
as a local family dentist that justexploded, what office are you at to

(07:58):
get your teeth cleaned? Wherever I'mat? Okay, you're like, hey,
sweeze me in. I trust andappreciate all of our staff members because
we hired them. So I mean, you know, anybody wherever, whoever's
available. What makes Lane different thanall the other dentists because there's a lot
of them out there, But whatmakes y'all different? You know? For
me, because I've been with doctorLane for twenty nine years, I think
it's the it's the family dentistry. It's you know, treating everything. You

(08:22):
know, we do everything from generaldentistry all the way through orthodonics, taking
out wisdom teeths. I mean,we have endodonas and just the camaraderie.
We have over one hundred dentists inour practice now, and we all are
like brothers and sisters. We allget along, and we all trust each
other, and we all appreciate eachother. And you've been there for a
long time, which is remarkable becauseyou don't hear about that anymore. Nine

(08:43):
years now. So you started whenyou were a baby, Yeah, I
was twenty six. Yeah, everybodysays that you were the nicest because I
was talking about Oh, I meteverybody over, you know, at an
awards thing that we had because y'allare always winning for best Dentists and the
triangle and stuff and all over. What is something that maybe not everybody would

(09:05):
know about you because they're like afun fact about you not related to dentistry.
Yeah, anything. I have apet tortoise. Oh okay, did
you know that stuffine? What's hisname? He or she? It's mister
T. Mister T. I hada boyfriend named mister T once. What
are some of your favorite things thatthat Lane and Associates has done in the
community. Big sponsors with KL andthat's a chaossation and they have a great

(09:28):
golf tournament. We don't win theGoF tournament ever because we're terrible, but
we enjoy playing in the golf tournamentand it's supporting a great cause and and
everybody there is so dedicated and we'dlove supporting them. You are also doing
stuff a bus with us this year, which toys for kids that we go
three days and you're gonna help usstuff the bus that goes to kids right
here in the triangle. That's alot of fun too, and it involves

(09:50):
our staff as well as the patients. Let our patients get involved and they
enjoy that. You know, it'sit's given back to the community. Of
course, Thank you, doctor right, what a treat Doctor Raleigh Wright with
Lane and Associates Family d Industry forthe Carolina podcast network All Things Carolina.
