(00:00):
Do you want know? I five, it's Erica DeLong sitting down with doctor
Glen Lyle. Lyle Plastic Surgery andAesthetics Center now going on eight months into
the new year with your new practice, and you have everything. This is
a very boutique style practice, fullservice and a beautiful building, very wooded
area. I know that that wasa big for you. Tell us all
about Lyle plastic surgery and aesthetics andwhat we can expect when we visit.
(00:22):
Yeah, you know, well,of course, full service surgical procedures.
I'm you know, obviously do plasticsurgery and cosmetic surgery. I don't do
insurance anymore. But and it's youknow, breast and body and face.
You know, some things I don'tdo. But I you know, that's
been the sort of the mainstay ofmy practice for my whole career. But
(00:45):
I've really wanted to introduce other options, other things. You know, people
say it's a med spa, wecall it the Aesthetics Center, but realistically
it's medical grade treatments and it's reallyYes, there are some sort of MEDSPA
type things. We do have facialsand hydrofacials and some of the more pampering
(01:06):
things. But honestly, we don'thave a lot of the other services to
some medspos you know, we're notdoing. We don't do laser hair removal.
We don't do you know, likebrow waxing and things like that.
Tinting, we don't. We don'tdo some of those things you'll see in
a you know, so when yousay we're full service, there's some things
we don't do. Purposely, we'rea little bit smaller, a little bit
(01:26):
more boutique, but it's more I'mlooking at technology and how can technology help
you look younger, look your agesometimes so, and there are some devices
we don't have that I purposely don'thave. You know, I do a
lot of body contouring. There's allkinds of places to do cool sculpting.
(01:47):
I think cool sculpting is fine. But honestly, if you're coming to me,
you're mostly gonna want or need liposuction. And if you don't, then
I can refer you to good peopleno liposuction real quick? Do you have
different types of liposuction that you offer? Ye? And what are they?
Yeah? So I have, Well, I have one device it's called the
(02:07):
Vaser. It's ultrasonic assisted liposuction. It's a little better for certain parts of
the body that are have like tough, fibrous fatty tissue, male breasts,
that kind of thing. It's goodfor revisional work. It's actually good for
people who have had cool sculpting thathave problems and have tethered areas. It
breaks through that some of that thatsometimes cool sculpting doesn't have a good result.
(02:30):
And you know, so I havethat, and I have what they
call power assisted liposuction, which isuh it's when you do LiPo section.
It's just you, you know, sucking the fat out, but it's a
power system just helps me and itmakes it a little bit more even.
I think there are other types ofliposuction that I don't have. Laser,
which is more of a higher energyheating of the tissue is supposed to shrink
(02:53):
skin. And then I have someadjuncts that go along with that, and
you know, liposuction, I domost of my lip aside with people asleep,
they're having something else, or they'rehaving just a lot of LP assuction.
You can also do small amounts oflight astructions. Some people come in
and say, you know, Ijust have these small areas, and I
can do that under a local anesthesia, maybe with a light sedative. And
(03:15):
some doctors do a lot of lipassuction with people fully awake, and that's
fine. I just prefer to doit when you're asleep because I'm usually doing
something else too. Okay, Soyou do the liposuction and those different types,
and then you have other devices thatpeople in this area do not have,
like Niogen, Well, neogen isone. Neogen is is. You
(03:35):
know a lot of people when theywant to what they call resurface your skin,
you know, they want to blowtorch off. It's a term I
use. It's not really blowtorch, blow torching off the top layer of skin
and letting the new one come in. And it's more rejuvenative. So like
a CO two laser and some ofthe other lasers I used to have that.
I still think it's a great device, but I've traded mine out for
(03:57):
a plasma. It's not a layersplasma device, so it but it creates
energy that does very similar but it'sit's not like you leave and your face
is immediately peeling. It's almost likea delayed effect in it more like it
forms like a leathery surface, andstudies have shown and results from other providers
(04:19):
have shown just a it's almost likea gentler way of doing it in a
way, and I think it justhas a more rejuvenating effect in the long
term at least that's what the advantagesof this. And it hurts about the
same. You still have to benumbed up. But I've had it done
my as an experiment before I evenbought the device, I had it done
on my around my eyes, justto see what it was like on a
(04:41):
lower setting, and it wasn't badat all. Is that a good maintenance
device? Like so say you hadco two years ago or Fraxil years ago,
because you typically have to do itevery couple of years, right,
just keep it maintained. And wedo think that the thing of the neogen.
This is true of almost any device. So you can adjust the settings,
and you can do that with otherdevices as well. But when you
(05:04):
adjust the device, you can dowhat they call low energy. Low energy
is going to be it's going tohave a nice effect, but it's more
cumulative. So if you're going tohave a low energy treatment, you're going
to recover a little quicker. Acouple of days, but you're gonna have
to have it like three times maybethat year where there's high energy or what
we call high low energy, whereit may be a little bit stronger,
(05:28):
and it may be a one timething that you do. When you say
one time, it's not like, hey, that lasts five years. It's
going to last a year, twoyears, but it's going to have a
major improvement in your skin, notonly some textural things pigmentation, but also
what we've seen is a real almosta tightening of the skin. And I
think it's great for people who havehad previous procedures and they say, oh,
(05:51):
you know, I had to seeit too, and that was awful,
and this one's a little bit betterexperience. In my opinion. It's
like little puffs of hot air youas opposed to getting zapped. You still
have to be numbed for it,and you still have to We sometimes offer
an oral sedative if you want, but a lot of people don't. People
(06:11):
just you know, they don't havethey don't have the time to have someone
come in and bring them that kindof thing, and they just want to
be able to leave. And youleave there and you're a little red you're
not like, you know, likepeeling all over the place. So that's
one device. I also have whatthey call soft wave, which is a
high intense energy ultrasound which helps toshrink some of the deeper tissues. So
(06:33):
it's not so much for the skin, the top layer of skin. It's
more for the deeper tissues. Soit's going to be something that's going to
tighten. It's going to tighten likeyour face a little bit and your neck.
Now some of these devices overlap, like Neogen does that too to an
extent, but this is like gettinga little deeper. It's good for like
necks. Actually just got FDA approvalfor things like your arms, Like,
(06:57):
yeah, going to ask your armswhat it's dangling? No matter how much
weight you lose, right, that'sa problem. Yeah, So soft wave
is one of those devices that justrecently got approval. People were using it
for that reason. But if it'sgoing to shrink and tightened skin, and
why not do it on an armor around a knee or something like that.
Even some people think that it.I haven't used a lot for this,
(07:17):
but for cellulite. Okay, Now, how many treatments are typically required?
If you were to do the arms, the fat under the arms.
I would say that, you know, my hope is that you do it
one treatment. I usually you don'tsee the results right away, So you
don't want to have someone come inand do it and then come back again,
like in a month and do itagain. You want to kind of
(07:38):
give it a good three months andsee how it's done. You know,
ideally it's a one and done, but sometimes a second treatment is necessary and
that. But that's also part ofthe aging process. You know. It's
not like it changes the collagen structureand your body doesn't continue to age.
It does does this last forever?Or it's like when you say it last,
(07:59):
it's good for a year, ayear to two, I would say,
And again that's just being honest.I think a lot of times,
I'm sure the company wants you tosay, hey, do this maybe every
five years. But even facelifts andstuff. You know, you do a
facelift, people say, how longdoes a facelift lasts? Well, I
mean you're going to continue to age. You may want to have a little
(08:20):
tuck in a couple of years, little minor duck or something. So I
think it's I think these things arelike, you get one treatment, you
may need some maintenance treatments, maybea lower energy or something. And then
we also have a device called cytonBBL, which is not the kind of
BBL a lot of people think about. It's broadband light, but it helps
(08:41):
more like pigmentation changes. It bringsout and corrects colors, you know,
change red. It can get outsome vascular things like little blushes on your
face. That's also something you probablyneed to have a few treatments set apart.
But it doesn't really hurt that much, you know. And unfortunately,
almost anything that's going to be goodfor your appearance or skin is going to
(09:03):
hurt to some degree. It's goingto be That's that's how it goes,
right, but you know, andbut you know, things like a facial
hydrofacial is good for your skin. You look great after it. That doesn't
hurt at all. That's more relaxing. And so I'm not talking about every
single thing, but pretty much anythingthat's going to really rejuvenate your face is
(09:24):
going to come with some discomfort. And my hope is that my goal is
to do it with as little discomfortas possible, especially these devices that you
have to do again. So it'slike you may come in for one treatment
and then you're like, I'm neverdoing that again because that hurt too much.
And so it's how we do it. It's it's how we numb you.
It's also providing you with some painmedicine and you know, not necessarily
(09:48):
a narcotic, but things just tomake your experience a good experience. And
you know, my my location isI think a very peaceful location. It's
you know, it's over West rawoff a blue Ridge and it's very light,
airy rooms. I think people feelrelaxed when they go in there.
It's not like a in my opinion, it's not like you're going to a
(10:09):
clinic where you're like in a closedoff room. I mean, all the
rooms are wide open, you can. I think it's it seems private because
a lot of people are very youknow, they're they want to be quiet
about whatever procedures they're getting, right, and it feels very private. Yeah,
it's private, but it's also youknow, what I like about it
is that people when you go inthe room and even with the windows open,
(10:30):
no one can see you. Right, we're on the second floor.
You look at the trees and everything. It's just a lot of people describe
it as just relaxing. So andas somebody that's well known in the area,
a very experienced plastic surgeon, haveyou noticed the devices are getting better?
I mean, obviously they're getting better, but the technology advances over the
years because y'all stay well trained alow plastic surgery and aesthetics. Yeah,
(10:52):
they do. I think sometimes Ithink of it as what's that term they
use about like planned obsolescence. It'salmost like they plan you know, there's
always a new, better device. You know, you get a device,
and this is one of the thingsyou deal with as a as a SPA
or asthetics owner, is that, you know, a company comes out with
(11:13):
this device, Oh, this isthe best thing. You buy it.
They cost a lot of money. You know, you got to, you
know, get a lot of patienceto do it to even pay for it.
And then and then a couple ofyears later, they're like, oh,
We've got this new, improved one, and it's like, what happened
to that good technology? Right? Some of the technologies I have are new,
but some of them are old andtried and true. And when I
(11:33):
say old, I shouldn't say oldbut like right, like Cyton BBL,
it's been a winner and you knowa lot of awards from you know these
new beauty magazine and things like that. Soft Wave is relatively new, but
the technology has been around. Someof these are even like Neogen. That
(11:54):
technology was called something else a whileback and it was sort of made better
and it's a amazing Some of theengineers, and a lot of them are
in foreign you know, our country, but foreign countries, Korea and different
countries where they they really biomechanical engineor biomedical engineers will will create this technology.
It's way above my abilities. Iwas never like that great in physics.
(12:18):
But it's like these guys really knowskin, they know these devices.
But of course they're like, okay, well how do we get it better?
And then that's a frustrating thing. You know, you can't have technology
necessarily that's ten years old, butthe same token you can't buy in brand
new devices does the same thing everyyear too. What is the best way
(12:41):
to get in to have your skin, your body, have yourself evaluated to
see what it is you can dofor yourself. Well, I, you
know, I we recommend appointments withmy my asthetic providers who are either are
in or a physician assistant. Wedo have esthetician, but that's going to
be more more for like facials andthings, and you know that kind of thing.
