Speaker 1 (00:03):
It's the Craig Way Show with the voice of the
Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame broadcast there Craig Way.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Notre Dame on to attempt a forty eight yard field
goal right now near an end of the first half
between Texas. Sorry, in the first halt between Georgia and
Notre Dame in the All State Sugar Bowl. The College
Football Playoff quarterfinal mitsheet are already success successful from forty three
yards earlier in the game. So now attempting it a
(00:42):
forty eight yarder that would put Notre Dame in front
six to three if he were to make it, and
believe he just did right down the upright, So Notre Dame,
they're first leading this game with thirty eight seconds to
go in the first half, leading six to three over
the Georgia Bulldogs. Again mentioned we had some sound here
from yesterday's postgame show on the Longhorn Radio Network with
(01:05):
Will Matthews and Roger Wallace. Let's get to gunner Hilm
stay on the offense side of the ball. Helm had
these touchdown in the second overtime. The first play twenty
five yards out. Only three catches in this game was
used a lot in running pass blocking situations, but Helm
came up big in the second half, specifically with that
(01:26):
touchdown grab. Here is his postgame conversation with Will Matthews.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
Gunner.
Speaker 4 (01:36):
Can you talk us through this game and what you saw,
especially early in the game, you guys come out to
plays bam, a little bit of a lull and then
turn it back on late in the game.
Speaker 5 (01:46):
Yeah, we stressed the point of jumping on him fast,
and that's exactly what we did, you know, scoring on
the second play of the game.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
So you know, we came out.
Speaker 5 (01:53):
Hot and then we just got to find a way
to keep that fire going into this, you know, the
second quarter, and you know, the.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
Flow of the game was the flow of the game.
Speaker 5 (01:59):
I don't think we got more than twenty five plays
in the first half, so you know, we got to
capitalize on our opportunities when they come. But other than that,
just so proud of these guys persevering through the adversity
and uh, you know, there's a lot of fight in
this team and I can't see what we can't wait
to see what we do next week.
Speaker 6 (02:15):
Yeah, you talk about adversity, the pick and then the
last three times Quinn touches the ball, touchdown, touchdown, two
point conversion.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
What's that say about your quarterback?
Speaker 5 (02:25):
Yeah, I mean it says that, you know, he's a
complete competitor. You know, he's one of my one of
my best friends off the field, and uh, you know,
he's the exact same way off the field, just a competitor,
doesn't like to lose at all. But you know when
when when Quinn gets the ball in his hands, it's
dangerous and we know that, and we know that he
can make these plays and we're just super proud of him.
Speaker 4 (02:43):
When the game starts to change in momentum shifts, it
can feel almost like sinking. But you guys were able
to focus even though that there was adversity.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
Talk us through why.
Speaker 5 (02:54):
You know, I think it's uh speaks volumes on how
coach Star gets us ready for the games. He told
us this was exactly what's going to happen. You know,
we knew that they tried to short the game. They
like to try to short the game, and you know
we're going to have limited opportunities, so we had to
make the most for opportunities. But he got us ready
throughout this whole week. He said we were going to
have adversity, and when it struck, we knew how to
I guess get through it.
Speaker 6 (03:13):
Your view of a fourth and thirteen, entire season on
the line, and Quinn and Matt come up with that touchdown.
Speaker 5 (03:19):
I mean, yeah, it was just heart, heart sank and
just the most relief I've ever felt in my whole life.
But they made a great play. Quinn threw a great
ball and Matt made a great play. He came out complete,
completely clutch for us today and super proud of him
and his efforts.
Speaker 4 (03:34):
Gonna talk about this defense and what they bring. You
guys are really complimentary. They do their thing, you do
their thing. Talk about that connection.
Speaker 5 (03:42):
The Yeah, I don't think that we were very complimentary
early on in the season. I think that we kind
of hung them out to dry a couple times early
on in the season. But just as we grew as
a football team and we started to establish a run
game and getting all of our playmakers to ball in
their hands, you know, I think that we really started
to put the defense in the best situation that we
possibly could because that's our job. We want to keep
them off the field. We need lomb drives, keep them
(04:03):
off the field. Keep them fresh, keep them healthy, keep
them ready.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
Gunner, thank you so much for your time. Enjoy this one.
See you in dat sir, see you guys in Dallas.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
It's two straight games that Gunner Helms had two big
touchdowns on the College Football Playoffs, being the College Football
Playoff Notre Dame forcing another turnover, stripsacking Gunner stocked and
recovered by Notre Dame. First play touchdown, Fighting Irish their
first touchdown of the game. Riley Leonard throwing a touchdown
pass the Collins over the middle, Notre Dame a chance
(04:33):
to go up thirteen to three at the end of
the first half. What a flip in this game.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
It was three to three.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
Georgia with the football and now the Dogs may be
going into halftime yet again trailing in their second member
the Trelligaans Texas in the NCIT title game have not
played since then. Looks like they'll be trailing at halftime
going into this one as the extra point on the
way is good. Thirteen to three, Fighting Irish leading Georgia
in the College Football player Off quarterfinal at the Sugar Bowl. Okay,
(05:02):
I was Gunner helm Now onto the man who had
the game ceiling interception, Andrew mccooba.
Speaker 4 (05:09):
Come and waiting for a lifetime for your fifth interception.
Speaker 7 (05:12):
I mean, this whole thing really started when we was
down and you know, it was getting ready.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
To go out.
Speaker 7 (05:18):
You know, I told jay Ay man you the leader,
bring you the leader of his team, you know, bring
everybody together and pick the defense up man, because the
energy was low. And he got everybody together, taught to everybody,
picked the energy up, and on that on that same on,
that same driver went out. Though obviously we got the
game winning h we got the game winning interception, but
you know it all started with Jaday getting those guys together,
talking to those guys, you know, lifting those guys up
(05:39):
and telling them we got to pick this energy up.
Speaker 3 (05:41):
So he really started with him.
Speaker 6 (05:42):
You say that, and then Jaa gets the defensive player
of the game and the first thing he does is
mentioned you does that kind of sum up that dB room?
Speaker 7 (05:50):
I mean, yeah, and this is just the type of
person that Jada is. He's never really gonna take credit,
but you know he deserved the credit. But you know,
he the type of person that was gonna give everybody
else to credit and not take the credit. So I
just wanted to, you know, give a shot out to
him because he played his hard out and he definitely
deserved that.
Speaker 4 (06:03):
MVP Troth tonight. ASU came out really strong. They kept
coming back, growing and growing.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
What was that? What was the defense?
Speaker 4 (06:13):
What were y'all talking about on the on the sideline
when y'all were going into that, Man?
Speaker 3 (06:19):
What was you telling everybody?
Speaker 1 (06:20):
Man?
Speaker 7 (06:21):
Whatever, whatever it takes, whatever he tells to get this
job done. You don't matter how we do, we're down
or we oh whatever, he tests to finish his game.
So that was just the mentality, man, street fight mentality.
You know, go out there, you know, fight, you fighting
and not stop and not quit and you know you
obviously see the results.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
Man.
Speaker 7 (06:35):
We just kept going.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
That'start. We just believed and kept going.
Speaker 6 (06:38):
Andrew, we asked Matt if you saw your pick? He said, yeah,
of course, that was pretty nice. Did you see his
fourth down catch to keep this season alive?
Speaker 3 (06:45):
Man?
Speaker 7 (06:45):
I seen everything Matt did today. Man, that was that
was really phenomenal. Man. It really he really helped us
obviously win the game. So, you know, shout out to
Matt Man. He was definitely doing this thing today.
Speaker 4 (06:55):
As you really great opponent going against Gataboo and levit.
Can we talk about what the defense brought to that
with that matchup.
Speaker 7 (07:03):
To the oh, I mean, we knew it was gonna
be a physical game, you know, coming in with Scheduble, Uh,
you know, he's definitely one of the best backs in
the country. Uh you know, you know, I'll give credit
what credit is do and respect respect this due. He's
definitely one of the best guys in the country at
that running back position. But we knew it was gonna
be a physical game. So we just we just went
out there. You know, we just had to match physicality
(07:24):
and we had to be the more physical team to
in order to come out on top of this game,
because they are a pretty good physical team. As far
as the quarterback, he a good quarterback, you know, he
went he was having a lot of success at the
beginning of the game, and you know, meg games. So
we just knew we had to make adjustments, you know,
find ways to cause turnovers or get stopped from third
down and get him off the felt.
Speaker 6 (07:44):
Andrew you we talked on Monday, and I said, is
this kind of what you vision when you made the
move back home?
Speaker 3 (07:48):
He said, exactly.
Speaker 6 (07:50):
I want to be one of the pieces they needed
hard to imagine this one though, to help get Texas
to the final four.
Speaker 7 (07:56):
I mean, I've been saying this the whole, the whole. Yeah, man,
this year feel like a movie for me. You know,
ain't the guys in the room and they feel like
this whole thing was scripted for me coming home playing
my basketball, helping the team.
Speaker 3 (08:08):
Uh, you know what happened.
Speaker 7 (08:09):
Today, just everything and everything in general just feel like
a movie. And I'm just thankful for the opportunities I'm
getting and just thankful overall.
Speaker 4 (08:16):
Last quick question, talk about the five one two, all
three of you guys playing at the at the top
two in your thing your fifth interception today talk about.
Speaker 7 (08:25):
Me, and you know, it's amazing to have obviously those
two guys alongside, you know, you know, great great competitors,
good players. Uh, you know, guys is gonna make plays.
But you know, it's it's amazing to really see that
because you know, it's these these are two guys with
three three in total. You know that's going out there,
you know, making plays where there's me making them play
the game, tap making play in this game. J ady't
making it play or we are three making plays. So
(08:46):
you know, it's great to see that, and you know,
I'm happy for those guys, and I'm really proud of
those guys.
Speaker 4 (08:50):
Andrew, thank you so much for your time, Rest up,
get ready for doubts.
Speaker 2 (08:54):
See all in Dallas is saying it felt like a movie.
Everything's been scripted. It's a Texas would not be here
without the play of Andrew mccouba this season. I think
he's walked into the hearts of Texas fans, one of
their favorite players on this defense, plays so hard, deliver
some of the biggest hits we have seen in college football,
and came up with a big interception to clinch the game.
(09:17):
Last postgame interview for you comes from Alfred Collins, a
guy who's been with this program for a couple of
years now, stuck through it has developed into one of
the frontline starters and it has been a big piece of
this defensive line.
Speaker 4 (09:28):
We got out for Collins right here. Alfred talk to
us about those overtimes, especially how you guys are able
to continually focus up and make the play when it
was needed.
Speaker 8 (09:41):
You know, I feel like, like I always say, it's
our preparation, you know, at the end of the day,
you know, we're gonna have to do what we gotta do,
and you know we have to go to two overtimes,
and you know we came out on top.
Speaker 3 (09:52):
Alfred.
Speaker 6 (09:53):
You never know how game's gonna go. You guys had
to dig deep because you were out there a lot.
What was that like? And what was that like down
the stretch to just find every ounce of energy you
had left?
Speaker 8 (10:02):
Man, you know, I owe it to this organization to
start to the defense as an offense to everybody.
Speaker 3 (10:07):
You know, just give it my all, even if even.
Speaker 8 (10:08):
If I'm on one leg, you know, I'm gonna give
it my all with that one leg.
Speaker 4 (10:11):
So yeah, so the game is coming, you guys go
down and then have to fight back. Was there a
rallying cry? What was going on on those sidelines over there?
Speaker 3 (10:21):
Oh?
Speaker 8 (10:22):
You know, we just we just we just came together
as a team, as a defense, as an.
Speaker 3 (10:26):
Offense, as a defense as offense.
Speaker 8 (10:29):
You know, we just regroup. Said like, you know, we
didn't blink. You know what I'm saying. We like, let's
go back out there and do we gotta do.
Speaker 6 (10:35):
You know, give me your view of Andrew's pick and
kind of the emotion going through you.
Speaker 3 (10:39):
Man, it was I have butterflies.
Speaker 8 (10:41):
Man, It's just so happy man, because you know we
don't want to.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
I mean, we went to overtime a game like man,
it was just a special money.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
Man.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
I really don't have words for it. I was just happy.
That says it all, right there. I was just happy.
Definitely says it all.
Speaker 4 (10:58):
And now you guys are going up to Dallas kind
of talk us through. I know you're gonna enjoy this
one tonight. But what's that focus?
Speaker 8 (11:07):
You know, just getting getting healthy tomorrow, you know what
I'm saying, or hitting the training room everybody, and then
just attacking a game, playing attacking practice, being intentional everything
we do and prepare for whoever we got.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
Thinks it's gonna be a tough task against Ohio State.
Caleb Downs one of the best safeties in college football.
They have a fantastic secondary, they have a good front
four that can get pressure on Quinn yours, and they
have probably the most explosive offense in college football. Will
Howard is a capable quarterback, but when you have Travon
Henderson and quinch On Judkins in the backfield, and plus
(11:39):
Jeremiah Smith and Abuco on the outside. It'll be tough
for the Texas defense. They will have their hands full
in this game. And I said it earlier on the show,
said again right now. I don't know if we've seen
a full four quarter game from Texas this year, but
to beat Ohio State, they are going to need a
complete performance from offense, defense, in special teams. I got
(12:00):
a fill in. Winner of this game will win the
national championship. Speaking of other college football payoff games, Notre
Dame a thirteen to three lead at halftime now officially
huge turnover towards the end of the second half or
end of the second quarter from Gunner Stockton, a fumble
recovered by Notre Dame. They would score on the ensuing play.
They go up by ten points and they will take
(12:21):
on Penn State next week. The winner of that game
will take on Penn State, and of course Texas will
take on Ohio State next Friday, six thirty pm. Kickoff
Ohio State in Texas at the Cotton Bowl. Archives will
begin at three thirty until five thirty and then Craig Way,
Will Matthews, Roger Wallace will have the call. The Penn
(12:43):
State versus Notre Dame Georgia winner. That'll be on Thursday
at six thirty pm the Capitol Win Orange Bowl, and
then Texas, Ohio State Friday at six thirty in All
roads lead to Atlanta. January twentieth, we'll be back to
wrap up today's program here on a thirty ten hundred,
the ZEMM
