Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let me bring a couple more comments from Andrew mccooba,
the OLBJ product who had his first interception of the
season as a Longhorn and a first interception overall as
a Texas Longhorn last Saturday. He was asked, among other things,
(00:23):
about since he is transferring, and we're going to ask
Jeff Traylor this, want to get him, want to get
with him about adjustments that all players who go through
the portal have to make to the program of the
coaching staff, things of that nature. Macooba played well at Clemson,
but there are adjustments be made. So how about his
adjustments to have p K Pete Kwakowski as his defensive coordinator.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
My time in Clinton, I played mostly nickelbug.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
Coming here moving to safety, playing a troop position at safety,
I felt like for me, that's kind of what I needed,
being able to show what I can do and not
just be stuck in the slight covering the slot receivers.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
I can move around.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
Sometimes you might see me in the post obviously, sometimes
you might see me done in the box, just doing
kind of different all different kinds of things. I feel
like that kind of put me in the best position
to make players around the ball.
Speaker 1 (01:12):
Yeah, and there's also that adjustment to being a senior
in the locker room, so you'd think automatically a leader
right well with your first year, maybe they're still an adjustment.
So you got to try to find a balance between
all of that.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
I don't really find it hard.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
I mean, I'm one of those guys that are gonna
speak when I feel like I need to speak. And
obviously being a senior playing being in three years started
playing a lot of ball, you know, I feel like
a lot of guys kind of got respect for me
and the knowledge that I have for the game.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
I feel like some guys can learn from me if
they want to. But you know, I don't.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
I speak when I feel I need to speak. Obviously,
I try to kind.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
Of lean lean more and helping the younger.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
Guys that got the questions to guys like Hexen Jordan's
just just sorder those things.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
Players always want to take their game to a higher level,
a next level. So does Macoba feel he's getting there?
Where has he taken his game in that area he started?
Speaker 3 (02:04):
After my junior year, I just felt like my mentality,
my mindset was just different going into that summer and
that spring, and I feel like I improved tremendously in
a lot of areas in my game. And when I
say I took my game to a different player, I
feel like I attacked those areas my weaknesses. I attacked
those those weaknesses over time, and I feel like I improved.
(02:25):
But I feel I used the work to be done,
but better than I was and where I was at.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
Yeah, and think about this, he's really kind of starting
all over again, coming back home and starting up again.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
To be honest, it was for me.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
It was a good thing, and I feel like I
just needed a new start all over again, just started
from scratch, trying to build discipline and good habits in
what I do and just but coming here, obviously nothing
is given. You gotta go out there and go prove yourself.
And I felt I did a good job of coming
in getting the deepest down, going out there making players
(02:57):
and practice and just practicing hard and playing hard. I
feel like, obviously I got where I'm at and nothing
was really given to me.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
I went and got it just like I did when
I came in as a fresh.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
Now, as we mentioned, even though he's playing on a
nationally ranked team, UH and in a nationally based program.
The fact that there's local guys, guys he's known since
middle school on this team.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
That helps.
Speaker 1 (03:21):
He's the transition.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
It feel good because you know.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
Texas.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
Back then, Texas didn't really recruit uh the schools in
the area like that kids in the backyard.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
So people were upset about that.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
But now I feel like they doing a good job
and bringing in guys is from the city, uh and
having those guys on the team is amazing.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
Because that just bring hopes.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
That just brings hope to the city and just let's
let's the younger generation know that, you know, if they
do what they're supposed to do, and then schools like
Texas will come from me. You get to play in
front of your hometown, in front of the crowd. You
got family and friends that being diehard Texas fan that
come to games. So that feeling is just amazing and
just knowing that that's a.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
Good thing, I must admit it is does sound a
little strange, a little odd to hear a guy who
is a senior in college talk about the quote unquote
younger generation. But he's done heck of a job and
it's good to see him and starting in that long
worn secondary of the former LBJ Jaguar. Andrew mccooba, we'll
be back to wrap up Hour number two on Sports
