Speaker 1 (00:00):
Big weekend baseball series. Texas Rangers will be playing the
Boston Red Sox this weekend, both teams trying to stay
in the thick of the fight of the postseason picture.
And if you look at the standings right now in

(00:24):
the American League, the Orioles are leading the American League East,
the Guardians are leading the Central, and the Asteroids and
Mariners are tied atop the American League West. Here's the
unusual situation for the Rangers in the wild card standings
Cleveland or excuse me, in the I'm just looking here

(00:48):
to make sure that I look at this properly. I
see what Baltimore and the Yankees are tied for first,
So they're listed in both the wild card and the
division league. But one of those teams would win the East.
The other would be right now the top seed in
the Wildcard. The other two teams that would be in

(01:10):
the playoffs if it were to start today in the
America League would be the Royals and the Twins. Behind them.
The Red Sox are two games off the pace of
that final wildcard spot. The Mariners are three and a
half off, the Rays are four and a half off.
The Rangers are eight games out of the wildcard so

(01:31):
the odds of them making up enough ground to get
a wildcard spot are pretty slim. However, they're only four
and a half back in the West from winning the division.
So that's one of those deals where their best shot
is to win the division and not have to deal

(01:53):
hope about getting into the playoffs. See, it's a little
bit different with regard to say the Atlanta Brays. Even
though they've spiked up of late, they're still trailing by
six games in the National League East to the Phillies,
and as a result of that, they would not win
the division. However, they lead the wild card race in

(02:14):
the Nation League. The Braves, the Padres, and the Diamondbacks
would be your three teams going into the wildcard round
if the season ended today, But the Mets are only
a half game out of that third wildcards. About the
Cardinals are two out, the Pirates are just two and
a half out, and Cole Dixon San Francisco Giants not
out of the race four and a half back. Even
though they're two blow of five hundred, they're only four

(02:36):
and a half out of the wildcards. So you're telling
me there's a chance I'm telling you there's a chance,
telling you there's a chance, and that is what makes
the regular season and so much more intriguing when you
go down the stretch of the season with teams that
still have a shot to get into the postseason. And

(02:56):
it was the Rangers themselves who demonstrated that all you
have to do is get in, get into the playoffs,
and if you get into the playoffs, got a chance
to win it.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
And the Rangers did it as a wildcard last year.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
Remember after the whole lead slipped away from them down
the stretch against the Astros and the Rangers ended up
losing out in Seattle, and then the Astros won the
division and you had all that vitriol and the Astros
and I get you know what would have happened if
they won? I guess we'll never know. The Astros did

(03:32):
that and they were kind of yucking it up. And
then when the Rangers won the World Series, coming through
as a wildcard, winning in Tampa Bay the Wildcard Series,
then beating Baltimore, then beating the Astros, then winning the
World Series of the Diamondbacks, she had Corey Seeger going
and guess what would happen if we won the division instead.
I guess we'll never know. Said that it was a

(03:55):
little bit of touchet back to them afterwards. But right
now the Rangers know their best shot is to win
the America League West, and they opened up a pretty
important series with the Red Sox tie. And the Red Sox,
of course, are well back in the division league of
Baltimore and the Yankees in the East, so they're likelihood
not going to win the division title, so their best

(04:16):
shot is to get in as a wildcard. So they
played the night and we'll see how it We'll see
how it goes. That is a seven o'clock start. The
Astros and this long homestand going on. They had three
games with the Dodgers last week and they won two
of those. They have three games with the Pirates and
they lost two of those. So they're three and three

(04:37):
right now in this nine game homestand and they have
Tampa Bay coming in. And the added storyline is Yusai Kikuchi,
whom the Astros got in the trade with the Blue Jays,
and it drew a lot of scrutiny as to whether
the Astros.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
Gave up too much to get them.

Speaker 1 (04:57):
Well, the first chapter of all of that is to
be written to night, as.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
We'll see Konkoochie go to the mound for them.

Speaker 1 (05:07):
Now, I was talking about the Rangers a moment ago,
and you know what they did in you know, turning
it around after the Division League got away from them
late the year and they had to go the hard
way and win the wild Card Series of Tampa Bay.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
Then they had to beat Baltimore.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
Then they beat the Astros, and then of course after
beating the Astros and the alc Yes, they beat the
Diamondbacks to win the World Series. So they won the
world title. And what comes with winning the World title,
the trophy and all that stuff also a trip to
the White House. And the Rangers are getting ready to

(05:48):
make their trip to the White House. It's going to
be on Thursday of next week, on their off day
ahead of their trip to New York and Boston. So
there's gonna be a ceremony on the South Lawn on
Thursday afternoon.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
President Biden will be there.

Speaker 1 (06:03):
The weekly schedule typically announced on Sunday, so they're announcing
that it looked like the schedule was cleared up enough
for the Rangers to visit President Biden. Welcomed the Chiefs
to the White House back at the end of May
when he was still running for reelection. The Rangers had
hoped to visit in mid May head of a trip

(06:24):
to Philadelphia, but they were scheduling conflicts. Will now with
the President no longer seeking reelection, the schedule is cleared
up a little bit, so the Rangers will be there
at the White House to visit with the President on Thursday.
All right, we'll be back to wrap up Hour number
two here on this Friday afternoon on Sports Radio AM
