Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, it's whatever, fifty some odd degrees outside and pouring rain,
it must mean it's baseball season, right or sort of
kind of something like that. Good afternoon, everybody, Welcome to
the program here on AM thirteen hundred the Zone. The
reason why I say baseball as we bring you the
program this afternoon from UFCU dish fog Field, home of
(00:22):
the Texas Long Runs. No, they're not playing a game today.
In fact, their home opener is exactly one week from
the day against the Houston Cougars. But their season opener
is Friday night up in Arlington at Globally Field, home
of the Texas Rangers, as part of the Shriner's College Challenge,
and they will be playing three opponents in three days.
(00:45):
Friday night against the Louisville Cardinals, Saturday evening against the
Old Miss Rebels. Yes, an SEC opponent, but it won't
count as a conference game. In fact, Texas and Old
Miss aren't even on the schedule against one another this year.
In SEC play Sunday evening against Oklahoma States. They have
three games that they will be playing Friday night, Saturday night,
(01:06):
and Sunday night. So today here at UFCU dish falk Field,
was Baseball Media Day, a chance for media come out
and visit with players. Head coach Jim Schlasnegel is meeting
with the media right now, and we'll have his comments
either later in the program or on tomorrow show.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
We will hear from some long worn players.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
Today, a couple of the newbies pitchers Jared Spencer, Rugeriojas.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
We'll hear from a couple of those guys.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
Also, we'll hear from Andre de Plantier, who is back
for another season. And we will also here from Will Gasparino,
long Worn's outfielder as well, So we'll hear from those
guys coming up this afternoon. We've got a lot of
things to get to on the program today. Among the topics, obviously,
there's a long worn basketball game tonight, and a big
(01:59):
one as Texas takes on the number two team in
the country, the Alabama Crimson Tide. And Texas really in
need of a win after dropping back to back games
to Arkansas at home last Tuesday and or last Wednesday,
and then on Saturday in Nashville against Vanderbilt. So they
(02:19):
drop both of those games and they do need a
win tonight. Will update things that are going on in
terms of the bracketological prognostications will do that, and we'll
have a closer look at this matchup with the Alabama
Crimson Tide. Also, we will take a look at pro
basketball the NBA. Now, I'm not sure how many of
(02:44):
you got a chance to watch either of two games
or both of two games, because they were separated by
a time frame. The Dallas Mavericks, for those of you
are Mavericks fans, had a home game against the Sacramento
Kings last night that went overtime.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
The Kings ended up winning a one, nine eight in
overtime last night.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
So it was that and then as as that game
went into overtime, and it was in the late stages
of things, and as it went into that, the other
thing that happened was the Los Angeles Lakers had a
home game against the Utah Jazz, and.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
Of course that.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
Game had a lot of hooplaw and attention surrounding it
with the Lakers debut of Luka Doncic in a Los
Angeles uniform, and it.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
Was rather entertaining to watch.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
There were times that that game for the Lakers to
be what they are, they're thirteen about five hundred and
so they are building things, but I don't think that
they were viewed, certainly going into the season as a
serious contender for the NBA title or even Western Conference
title or whatever. Now with Luke on it, I think
(04:05):
things will be different. And even though he still has
a ways to go in terms of developing his comfort
level in the Lakers system, he still had a very
productive game with LA last night, as did Lebron James.
The two seem to compliment each other well, they seem
to work together well, and we'll give you numbers and
(04:25):
stuff like that on down the line.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
But there was.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
The other thing that came to mind, and I read
some similar things about this today, was that many folks
thought it kind of gave the resemblance of the Showtime Lakers. Now,
you know, the Showtime Lakers had Magic and Kareem and
you know Michael Cooper and James Worthy and Byron Scott
and Norman Nixon before him and so on and so forth.
(04:55):
Kurt Rambus had all those guys that were part of
that part of that Lakers show Time era. And they
aren't to that, but they do have one of the
greatest players of all time in Lebron James. Minifield is
the greatest, certainly one of the greatest players of all time.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
And then obviously now they have Luca so.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
Who could in time become one of the greatest players
of all time in NBA history. And they kind of
played like it last night. They had seventy two points
in the first half of the game. Now you toss
in a complete rebuild, so it's going to take some
time for the Jazz to, you know, to build back
into a contender, but there's the belief that they will
(05:40):
probably get there. They've got good leadership, they've got from
a good front office, all.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
Of those things, and we'll see.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
But anyway, there'll be some thoughts on the Lakers where
they are, the Mavericks where they are, because it.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
Was a pretty ugly scene.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
As I rolled back to talking about the Mavericks, it
was a pretty ugly scene last night at the American
Airlines Center. If you were if you saw it, you'll
know what I'm talking about. But we'll recap it because
I'm actually putting it in inconceivable because as inconceivable as
(06:16):
it might seem that the Dallas Mavericks would trade away
Luka Dancic and watching the games last night. It at
times seemed a little bit surreal. I'm sure it did.
For what do they call them, mffls, mav fans for life.
Although that's taken the hit, there's a lot of people
(06:36):
say that that they should dump that because they've lost
fans by the scores left and right after this trade
toward that end was an example of it last night,
and how things have gotten ugly between the new ownership
and Mavericks fans, as demonstrated at American Airline Center last night.
(06:56):
We'll get into that a little bit later on. That'll
be in our Inconceivable segment, so we'll have that. In
women's college basketball, Texas continues on the uptick up to
number three, and they're going to go to Kentucky. They'll
leave tomorrow for the game that's on Thursday, and they're
going to play a Kentucky team that'll be angry, a
team that had had only one conference loss until last night.
(07:21):
Kentucky kind of fell apart down the stretch and All
Miss won the game in Oxford beat Kentucky, So now
Kentucky has two losses. There's a three way tie atop
the SEC women's standings between number three Texas, number four
South Carolina and number five LSU. All three teams are
ten and one in the league. And this week after
(07:43):
Texas has a difficult road test on Thursday night in
Lexington at Kentucky, they turn around, come home and play
fifth ranked.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
LSU on Sunday afternoon.
Speaker 1 (07:54):
This all coming after, of course, that huge win two
days ago when they beat South Carolina at Moody Center
to split the season series with the game Cocks. It
was very very big there, So we'll have some updated
things there on that as well, and as always we're
more than happy to take your questions, your thoughts, your
(08:14):
comments on it on our text line.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
Our text line is there.
Speaker 1 (08:20):
You have only to text the word Texas follow by
your question or comment to eight one five to three zero.
That's text the word Texas follow by your question or
comment to eight one five to three zero. Standard messaging
and data rates may apply. And if you want to
(08:41):
reach us on the talkback feature via the the brand
new and improved iHeartRadio app, if you don't already have
it downloaded on your phone, that's easy to do as well,
So you download that and then pull up a thirteen
under the zone. Once you pull that up, you'll see
two buttons. One is a white button in the shape
of line, a triangle or an arrow. That's if you
(09:02):
just want to listen to our regular programming that's going on.
But if you want to join in with a comment,
there's a little red button to the right of it
with a white microphone.
Speaker 2 (09:12):
You push that button.
Speaker 1 (09:13):
That's the talkback feature and you can actually leave us
a message of up to thirty seconds. So you can
either texas Texas followed by your question or comments to
eight one, five three zero, or you can leave us
a message on the talkback feature as well, So either
way is fine and we'll get you. I am curious
(09:34):
if there are Maverick fans, and I know there are
some Maverick fans in the here.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
There's a lot of Spurs fans.
Speaker 1 (09:39):
Obviously this is Spurs territory, so there you know, there's
a lot of a lot of Spurs fans out there
as well. So if you want to reach out and
and hit us with your feedback on that, feel freed.
Feel free to do that as well on the text
line or however. So we're glad to take that. So
(10:01):
a lot to get to on the program coming up.
We're gonna hear from Andre du Plantier, you know, who's
a veteran here now at the University of Texas, both
as a pitcher. He's been out there also as an infielder,
but mainly as a pitcher, and his thoughts on playing
for Jim Schlasnegel now and this new culture and the
(10:22):
new environment around the long worn baseball team. It's be
his fourth season in the Longhorn uniform. So we'll hear
from Andre du Plantier coming up. But we'll get to
your text, your questions as well, and a lot more
here on a cold, drippy, rainy Tuesday afternoon where at
UFCU dish fault Field, home of the Longhorn baseball team,
on their baseball media day. We'll get to all that
(10:43):
and more coming up here on sports Radio AM thirteen.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
Hundred the zone. Cold wet, rainy Tuesday afternoon.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
Good thing there isn't a baseball game schedule tonight here
at UFCU dish farg Field or this afternoon, and be
difficult to get this one in because of the cold weather,
but it was media day here and we'll get to
a conversation here in a moment. Well, one other baseball
notes This just came down just a little while ago.
The defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers have agreed
(11:13):
the terms on a new contract with Clayton Kershaw that's
going to bring him back to the Dodgers for an
eighteenth season. It is pending a physical. Kershaw turns thirty
seven next month. He had foot and knee surgeries back
in November after he was limited to just seven games
last season and did not pitch in the postseason. But
of course he's been really a mainstay in the Dodger rotation.
(11:35):
He has spent his entire major league career in Los Angeles.
He's only thirty two strikeout shy of reaching three thousand
for his career, and he had pitched on one year
contracts in twenty twenty two and twenty twenty three.
Speaker 2 (11:50):
He did sign an incentive.
Speaker 1 (11:52):
Laden deal for last year, a five million dollar deal
that included an option for ten million, but he declined
that and with the insis he did pick up seven
and a half million. So he has agreed to terms
pending on physical on the outcome of that physical, on
a new contract with LA that We'll have some other
Major League Baseball notes coming up but about this long
(12:12):
worn baseball team as they start to put things together
for the twenty twenty five season. This team, as you
would imagine, is going to have a lot of brand
new to it, new faces, not only with real young
faces like freshmen, but also through the portal. And we're
going to hear from a couple of those guys a
little bit later on, some attorneys and some real veterans
(12:37):
wh've been here, like Andre Duplantier, who technically is a
six year senior. He redshirted it in twenty twenty one,
remembered as a true freshman in twenty twenty. They only
played seventeen games that year because of the shutdown due
to the pandemic. They had started at fourteen and three,
and he had appeared in a few ballgames that year,
(12:58):
so he's actually in his sixth year in the program.
Last year as a red shirted junior, in twenty nine appearances,
he was two and two with a three point nine ERA.
He had three saves, he had fifty three strikeouts of
our forty three innings, and opposing hitters hit one ninety
two against him. And of course he has had to
(13:18):
battle the injury bug during his career.
Speaker 2 (13:21):
As well.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
But here he is back for his sixth year in
a long worn baseball uniform, in the first under new
head coach Jim Schloasnegele. And that was part of what
the conversation was all about, just a little bit of
go the media availability with the Longhorn sixt years senior
right hander Andre de Plantier Junior.
Speaker 3 (13:42):
We've got right handed pitcher and Andre to plenty At
a second, well jumps trading to questions Stip Lovely an
absolutely nak.
Speaker 4 (13:47):
But there we go, Gray, Why did you decide to
come back for another season?
Speaker 5 (13:53):
It's hard not to want to be a Longhorn.
Speaker 6 (13:57):
And then the opportunity present itself with the new coaching
staff and didn't look back and went for it.
Speaker 7 (14:04):
What were those conversations like with the new staff as
we were trying to pick.
Speaker 8 (14:07):
Up your mind?
Speaker 2 (14:09):
Uh, they were just.
Speaker 6 (14:12):
They they they reassured that they'd be able to help me, uh,
help the help the team.
Speaker 5 (14:20):
Uh. They they thought I could be a big part
of that, and I was. I was bought in from
the drunk there.
Speaker 9 (14:27):
You're realg on this team.
Speaker 8 (14:30):
What does it mean to have a have schlatsnangle here?
Speaker 2 (14:33):
You know, just twenty years since.
Speaker 4 (14:34):
You guys won a national championship.
Speaker 10 (14:36):
This is a guy that lives in Omaha.
Speaker 5 (14:37):
Basically, Uh, it's a it's a blessing.
Speaker 6 (14:43):
I'm grateful for, you know, the last staff getting me
here and what they were able to do. But to
be able to hang around for six years and experience
some of this change with the new staff and Slash
and what he's been able to do. Like, I'm just
so grateful for what he brings, what he brings.
Speaker 5 (15:05):
Cause it's a different it's a different perspective.
Speaker 8 (15:07):
What what did What'd you seen a lot about that?
Speaker 5 (15:10):
What?
Speaker 10 (15:10):
What does he bring? Do you think it's different? The culture?
You know it?
Speaker 6 (15:16):
It's I definitely like we re sparked s that that
energy in in certain areas that that we needed and
it's just been great team bonding the whole time.
Speaker 3 (15:26):
You've seen a lot of these shops in Arlington and
maybe some struggles you guys have had in nine years
past in that stadium. How do you view this to
start the season now as a re any scar tissue
from over years past.
Speaker 6 (15:37):
We get to go one for one, well, game one,
we get to go one for one. We're not We're
not looking to go whatever number for whatever number. We
got one for one and they'll wake up the next
thing and go one.
Speaker 5 (15:49):
For one tree.
Speaker 10 (15:50):
What's it him like?
Speaker 2 (15:50):
Working with Max?
Speaker 5 (15:53):
Incredible. I could go on and on about that, but
what we've been able to.
Speaker 6 (16:01):
Do as a staff, I'm grateful to be a part
of this group.
Speaker 7 (16:05):
Well, I want you on and on, but maybe what's
one thing that stands up that's incredible.
Speaker 6 (16:09):
About, something that's right on top of my mine right now,
is just dominate his own It's it's something we talk
about daily and that's what you'll see from all of
our guys.
Speaker 10 (16:20):
What does it mean though, to dominate the league and fun? Smile? Yeah,
you know, there's a lot of things with that.
Speaker 6 (16:34):
I won't I will say that on the camera, you know,
but we're gonna we're gonna have fun.
Speaker 9 (16:39):
We're gonna play the game the best way you know
how to and smile.
Speaker 8 (16:43):
A couple weeks.
Speaker 11 (16:44):
Ago, Jalen said that you had a bunch of guys
kind of over your place and he was doing burgers,
you were doing wings.
Speaker 10 (16:50):
Purss off, how are your wings?
Speaker 11 (16:51):
And then secondly, how important was it for you older
guys you bet to kind of bring these new guys
in and kind of get everyone together.
Speaker 6 (16:57):
Yes, that was fun. Chef jFlow, he did whip up
some good burgers. That's where un kind of became a name. Uh,
she's just whipping up those wings. I say, they're they're
a plus wings. Anyone's welcome to try those. But yeah,
that's that's always been something that's important to me. Like
(17:19):
when I got here as a freshman, the older guys
took us in. And whenever you come into a place
like Texas, when whenever the older guys can make you
feel like this is your home from from the jump,
that meant a lot to me when I was young.
So talking with some of the older players about that,
like let's let's just have some food, get with the guys, Like,
(17:39):
I know what that did for me. And it's been
good to keep just a team bonding going.
Speaker 12 (17:45):
Playing baseball with your brother at the University of Texas.
Speaker 8 (17:49):
I mean obviously as kids, y'all played together.
Speaker 11 (17:52):
But then to be able to chase your dreams and
come to the University of Texas, what's that.
Speaker 9 (17:56):
Been Like I view it like everything happens for a reason.
Speaker 5 (18:03):
We've been able to go through ups and downs together.
Speaker 10 (18:06):
Uh, be on the same team.
Speaker 5 (18:09):
Uh, it's just it's just good like.
Speaker 6 (18:11):
Uh, I can't I can't complain about that being on
the same team together.
Speaker 8 (18:14):
During this team. This program's from built on pitching. You know,
staff had a Y or a O before last year.
Do you ever like the pitching as kind of the dominant
part of the program that's slipped a little bit? You'll
put that way. As a staff.
Speaker 10 (18:29):
I it was it was tough.
Speaker 6 (18:30):
Uh, but at at the end of the day, Uh,
the Longhorns win and loose, so we're not losing a
game and saying that it was one side of the ball.
We we all understand that by the time the scoreboard's done,
it's the long Horns win or loose.
Speaker 8 (18:49):
What was the flavor of wings?
Speaker 6 (18:51):
Oh we had we had some lemon pepper, and then
we just had the signature.
Speaker 5 (18:56):
Uh, you have to try it, you know, bring the Yeah, yeah,
I gets you, right, I guess you're right.
Speaker 8 (19:02):
Future entrepreneur.
Speaker 9 (19:04):
You know, maybe maybe maybe any any of the newcomers
that jump out of you, they're.
Speaker 8 (19:12):
Gonna make a big splash this year.
Speaker 6 (19:14):
Wow, pitching all of them. You know, we we brought in,
we brought in a lot of people. You know, there's
let's say, Drew, great guy. Everyone I'm thinking of It's
just is just a great human everybody. Drew Hayes around
with Bryce, you know, Connor.
Speaker 5 (19:32):
I could go on and on and on.
Speaker 6 (19:33):
But I'm so excited for everyone who we brought in
because they're really good players.
Speaker 8 (19:42):
Thank you. Right.
Speaker 1 (19:44):
Conversation with Andre Duplantier, the second who's now a sixty
year senior on that long warn baseball team, and he
talked about Max we are the new pitching coach and
what a what a difference he's.
Speaker 2 (19:56):
Made with the stuff.
Speaker 1 (19:57):
You're gonna hear that from a couple of the other
pitchers that we're going to hear from this afternoon on
the program. But by and large, that's been the universal conversation.
And these are guys coming from different backgrounds. Of course,
Duplantier is, as I mentioned, a six year senior, so
he's a returning veteran. But some of a couple of
the other guys you're going to hear from Ruga Riojas
(20:18):
a transfer, Jared Spencer a transfer. Those are guys that
are coming into the program for the first time, and
yet across the board, all of them are in unanimity
and talking about the impact that Wiener has made on
this on this pitching staff, and I'm sure we'll hear
Jim Schlosnegle talk about it and other players as well
(20:41):
in the coming days leading up to the season opener
on Friday night at Globelife Field against Louisville. So it'll
it'll uh, that'll be a big part of it as well.
And we'll also hear from Will Gasparino this afternoon and
talking about it. So there's some some conversation from some
Longhorn from one of the Longhorn pictures.
Speaker 2 (21:01):
Andre to Plante there hoping for good things out of him.
Speaker 1 (21:04):
Of course, he had to be shut down and had
Tommy John surgery when he went through that in twenty
twenty one and was red shirted and had some great
moments like that in the regional in Miami, and had
some good moments last year where he had a couple
of multi inning saves for Texas, and they're going to
need him as well as the other guys who are
(21:24):
a big part of that all right, coming up next.
It would be well inconceivable in the minds of some
Mavericks fans that think their world has turned upside down.
Like this, and that the new ownership has turned on
them as well. You'll hear all of that and more
coming up here on a Tuesday afternoon on Sports Radio
AM thirteen under the Zone in the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (21:43):
Glad to have you with us here this afternoon. My
name is Craig Waite.
Speaker 1 (21:47):
Thanks to Havings Ronald Savage producer this afternoon in the studio.
Cameron Parker, regular producer, will be back into Mark Cam
will be with me tonight across the freeway from where
we are right now at Moody Center. Tonight is Texas
will take on Alabama. More on that in a moment.
I feel compelled because I'm here in the ballpark in
(22:09):
the radio booth, which I always enjoy spending so much
time up here during the course of the season, and
I do always feel compelled whenever there is a ballgame here,
especially if it's a later in the day start, whether
it's late afternoon or early evening, because when I look
over to my left, I look at the upper deck
(22:29):
of I thirty five invariably, especially in the late afternoon starts,
the upper deck of I thirty five and you have
a bird's eye view of it. From where we are
in the broadcast booth is usually a parking lot by
late afternoon.
Speaker 2 (22:43):
It is actually moving at.
Speaker 1 (22:45):
A relative pace.
Speaker 2 (22:49):
I mean it's it's moving. Put it that way.
Speaker 1 (22:52):
It's slow, but it is moving, as opposed to a
lot of times when I look over there and it's
just gridlocked or just bare early crawling on.
Speaker 2 (23:01):
They're doing more than crawling. You're moving.
Speaker 1 (23:03):
I'd say, eh, twenty twenty five miles an hour, maybe
something like that. But I always feel compelled to say,
whenever I'm doing a ballgame here that be careful there
on that upper deck of I thirty five for those
of you listening on your drive home or wherever you're headed,
but to be a little bit careful, and especially on
the day like this because it is raining, but we're
(23:24):
here at the ballpark because today was Texas Baseball Media Day.
The Longhorns open the season Friday evening in Arlington as
they'll take on the Louisville Cardinals in the Shriners College
Baseball Challenge. That is Friday evening scheduled for seven o'clock
(23:46):
first pitch, and Keith Morrelan will join me for the
game broadcast of that on Friday night as Texas will
take on the Louisville Cardinals. They'll play Louisville Friday, they'll
play Ole Miss on Saturday, and Oklahoma State on Sunday.
By the way, you probably if I just give it
a little more boost, you can probably really hear it there.
It is, Yes, siren's there because something's happened. It looks
(24:08):
like it's on the lower deck there. So ambulance and
MS and you know, first responders on their way. Hopefully
everybody's okay there. But so that's so. They had Texas
Baseball Media Day today and we heard from Andre to Planti,
the second in the first hour of the program. Coming
(24:29):
up with a few minutes, we'll hear from another one
of those longhorned pitchers, left handed, Jared Spencer, the transfer
from Indiana State, and we'll hear from him coming up
here in just a few moments. We will also before
the program's done this afternoon here from Ruger Riojas transfer
in and we'll hear from Will Gasparino, a long Ward's
(24:50):
outfielder as well. So we'll hear from from those guys
this afternoon. So we'll look forward to bringing you those
conversations coming up here. Also, as I mentioned, our text
line is open.
Speaker 2 (25:04):
If you have a question.
Speaker 1 (25:05):
We're happy to avail ourselves of your questions, your thoughts,
your comments. It's really easy to reach us. All you
have to do is you text the word texas follow
your question of comments to eight one five to three zero.
(25:28):
You text the word texas followed by your question or
comment to eight one five three zero. Standard messaging and
data rates may apply. Somebody texted us and asked, and
this is a good question, wanted to know when are
the media timeouts in women's basketball. It's a fair question because,
(25:50):
as you know, women's basketball has different timing than the men. Yes,
they play forty minutes, just like the men, but unlike
the men, the women play four to ten minutes at quarters.
They don't play two to twenty minute halves. They play
four minutes four to ten minute quarters. And for those
folks that well, what's the difference, it's still it's It's
kind of like what my parents used to say when
(26:11):
we were, you know, eating, and I did I didn't
want my peas mixed up with my mashed potatoes, and
they would say, what differences and make it's all going
to the same place. But there is a difference. There's
a difference in the way the fouls are adjudicated.
Speaker 2 (26:28):
In the men's game. Of course, when you get to.
Speaker 1 (26:30):
The seventh team foul and a half, there's a one
in one that follows on the seventh, eighth, and nineteen fouls.
If they're not shooting fouls, if they're just common fouls,
loose ball fouls, defensive fouls that aren't in the act
of shooting, or if they're not offensive fouls, then it's
a one in one. However, on the tenth foul, then
(26:51):
you're shooting two free throws. Well, in the women's game,
they have done away with the one in one. There
are five fouls per quarter, and when you get to
the fifth foulw the offended team walking to the free
throw line has two free throws, so there's no one
in one. In the women's game, it's five fouls per quarter.
(27:12):
And what I discovered is that the game actually makes
for a little faster pace, a little quicker pace. Sometimes
there are more fouls involved. That was the case in
the first quarter of the Texas South Carolina game the
other day. There was a lot of conversation about that,
but by and large it moves a little quicker, the
(27:33):
pacing moves a little bit quicker on that. Now, as
to the timeouts, as you know, in the men's game,
it's at the under fours, the timeout at the first
dead ball at or below sixteen minutes, the sixteen minute
mark and a half, the twelve minute mark, the under eight,
and the under four, So the first dead ball from
(27:53):
the sixteen minute mark or below is a media timeout.
Then at the twelve minute markable the eight minute market
below or the four minute market below, a team can
call a thirty second timeout that does not carry over
to the second half. If it's inside of the window
inside of thirty seconds to the full media timeout, they
go ahead and just take that as the full media timeout.
(28:17):
The women's game, it's a little bit different their timeout.
The media timeouts are at the under five halfway mark
of each quarter. However, called timeouts, especially the first call
timeout on the second half, like with the men, is
then utilized as a full timeout, a full timeout when
(28:39):
it's called, but it's mainly at the five minute mark
of the first, second, third, and fourth quarters and then
additional timeouts that are called.
Speaker 2 (28:47):
So hopefully that answers the question for you there a
little bit, all right.
Speaker 1 (28:51):
I wanted to get to the men thing here before
we get to the break. Of course, the Texas men
play Alabama the night number two Alabama this evening at
Moody Center, and you can hear the contest or right
here on AM thirteen under the Zone. You can hear
it seven thirty air time, eight o'clock tip. It's also
(29:12):
available on ninety eight point one Fmkvett and one O
three point one FM, Austin's eighty station. So however you
used to listening to us in town, all those signals,
all three of those signals are available tonight here on
the Zone and then also on ninety eight one Cavett
and also on one O three to one. They're playing
(29:35):
the number two team in the country. It's a really
good team. What's really interesting is that the number one
team in the country is still Auburn despite the loss
of the weekend and Alabama's number two. You've got Iron
Bowl basketball happening this Saturday in Tuscaloos. In fact, the
ESPN College Game Day is going to be for it
there for that, but Alabama's game before that is the
(29:55):
one tonight, and Texas will have to deal with their
outstanding guard, Mark.
Speaker 2 (30:00):
Sears, who's their leading scorer.
Speaker 1 (30:02):
He averages eighteen points per game, he averages five assists,
can just scoot through a defense, outstanding shooter, all of
those things, so they'll have to deal with that as
well as the two guard. The grad transfer Chris young
Blood is good. Grant Nelson, their six to eleven grad
(30:23):
transfer forward who had come in from North Dakota State
who averages thirteen points and eight boards.
Speaker 2 (30:29):
Some of the parts really big.
Speaker 1 (30:30):
They've got two guys who averaged double digit scoring coming
off the bench, including an Auburn transfer in Aiden Holloway.
Speaker 2 (30:36):
So the long words are gonna have to deal with that.
We could see a little.
Speaker 1 (30:40):
Bit different look in the lineup tonight, Julian Larry perhaps
instead of Jordan Pope going at the guard spot. Tremon
Mark is going to be back in the lineup tonight.
He couldn't play Saturday in the game at Vanderbilt dude
to banged up shoulder. But Tremon Mark will be back
on the floor. Of course, Trey Johnson will start, Cayden
Schderick will start, Arthur Klowe will start tonight, and the
(31:02):
Loghorns are gonna have to shoot a good percentage and
they're going to have to defend well to have a
chance to win this basketball game for the Loghorns. We
were talking a little bit about it yesterday because Jerry
Palm one of the two bracketologists, he's the one from
CBS Sports Line. He has the log Horns in Dayton,
(31:22):
Ohio playing in the play in in the first four,
playing Georgia in fact, and there is a provision in
the NCAA tournament rules that do allow two conference teams
to meet in the first four if it works out
that way.
Speaker 2 (31:35):
And he has it listed that way.
Speaker 1 (31:38):
Joe Lnardi, of course, is really the highly acclaimed bracketologist
and who is right in that ninety six, ninety seven,
ninety eight percent pile every year and getting the teams
down and usually gets some really close within their seed line.
He has Texas still in the field, and he does
not have Texas in Dayton, but he does have them
(32:00):
listed of what he calls last four byes, meaning the
last four teams that don't have to play in Dayton,
and the other three teams are Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Vanderbilt.
Speaker 2 (32:15):
Because of Vanderbilts went over Texas.
Speaker 1 (32:17):
His last four inn are Georgia, San Diego, State, Wake Forest,
and BYU. First four out Arkansas, VCU, North Carolina and
SMU and the next four out Pittsburgh, Xavier, UC, San
Diego and Boise State.
Speaker 2 (32:35):
Those are the next ones you've got.
Speaker 1 (32:37):
Now, this this was as of this morning, and as
of this morning, Joe Lenardi has Texas in the field
in Cleveland as the number ten seed playing Louisville, and
if they were to win that game, according to Lenardi,
they'd have to play Florida in the second round. See
and again, there's a provision in the NCAA tournament that
(33:01):
allows conference teams to play as early as the second
round if there are more than eight teams that make
the tournament. Well, he's got thirteen teams projected from the
Southeastern Conference to be in the NCAA Tournament.
Speaker 2 (33:14):
Texas included the four.
Speaker 1 (33:15):
Number ones Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee and Duke, three of the
four being out of the SEC. The four number twos
that he has are Houston, Purdue, Texas, A and m
another SEC, and Florida another SEC. The four number threes
that he has projected are Michigan State, Iowa State, Arizona,
(33:40):
and Texas Tech and the four number four seeds Saint John's, Kansas, Wisconsin,
and Kentucky. Another SEC school in Kentucky, of course, will
be here in Austin on Saturday to take on the
Long Horns on Saturday. So there's a look at the
bracketology just to give you an idea of where Tech
is is right now and how important these games are.
(34:01):
Even if they were to lose tonight against the number
two team in the country, it's not going to really
do devastating damage to their net ranking, but they're going
to have to perform well in one of these games
coming up against the ranked opponent, be it Alabama or Kentucky,
and then the games that follow in the coming days,
and we'll talk more about that in the coming days.
(34:24):
Up next, we shift back to baseball. Let you hear
from Jared Spencer, Longhorn transfer left handed pitcher. That's next
when we continue here on Texas Baseball Media Day from
UFCU Dishfault Field on AM thirteen under the Zone, and
we're talking Longhorn baseball among other ut related things. We
were just finished talking about men's basketball. We've hit on
women's basketball as well. This afternoon Texas women will play
(34:48):
Thursday night in Lexington against eighth rank Kentucky. They're ranked eighth,
and they will be ranked eighth going into the game,
even though they did.
Speaker 2 (34:55):
Lose last night to Ole Miss.
Speaker 1 (34:57):
But Texas can put distance between themselves and Kentucky and
kind of solidify their bid to be a number one
seed coming off the winnever South Carolina. And they have
the huge game Sunday against LSU. So those are two
massive games for Texas, one on the road, one at home,
and they're closing three games. To be quite honest, they're
(35:19):
all quite winnable games. They have a road game at Georgia,
they have a road game at Mississippi State, kind of
a homecoming for Vic Schaeffer, and they have a home
game against Florida to close out the regular season. Those
are all games in which the Longhorns stand to be
the favorite to win those games. But those the two
(35:40):
games in front of them, the Kentucky game on Thursday
night in Lexington and the game Sunday against LSU, those
two could both be up for grabs, big big games
in both situations. Long Horn men tonight against number two Alabama,
speaking of big games, and then Kentucky comes to town
to play Texas on Saturday, so they have those two
(36:00):
games directly in front of them. For Long Gorn Baseball,
the home openers a week from tonight here at UFCU
dish Falk Field against the Houston Cougars. Prior to that, however,
Texas will be at Globe Life Field in Arlington and
they'll play Louisville, Louisville, Ole Miss, and Oklahoma State three
(36:22):
consecutive opponents. Oklahoma State the preseason choice to win the
Big twelve ranked Louisville Old Miss traditional powers.
Speaker 2 (36:32):
The Old Miss game will not count as an SEC game.
Speaker 1 (36:35):
In fact, Texas and Ole Miss aren't even on the
conference schedule to face one another this season. That's part
of the reason why they can go ahead and play
this game like this. It would count as a non
conference game. So that's coming up Friday, Saturday Sunday at
Globe Life Field in Arlington. And as we pointed out,
the Long Orange Bill have some new faces on the
(36:57):
Among those is a junior left hander Jared Spencer.
Speaker 2 (37:02):
Uh and uh, he's excuse me.
Speaker 1 (37:06):
Senior left hander Jared Spencer, who transferred in from Indiana
State's interesting and you're gonna hear Jared make reference to
this that the Longruns have dipped into the Indiana State
pool because of the two basketball players that are on
the Texas squad in Julian Larry and Jason Kent and.
Speaker 2 (37:28):
Jared Spencer.
Speaker 1 (37:29):
The left hander knows those two guys, so we got
a chance to reacquaint himself with him. He's from Centerville, Michigan,
six ' three, two hundred ten pound left he who
can throw hard and was All Missouri Valley Conference. Pitched
in eighteen games last year, made nine starts. He was
six and zero with a four point h eight ra
had two saves, thirty three walks, seventy two strikeouts, and
(37:52):
fifty three innings. Opposing hitters bat batted two sixteen against
him and the team the Long Wrns are playing on
Friday Night Louisville UH. He pitched against in the season
open last year for Indiana State and got the save
in the season opener on that So Jared Spencer brand
new addition to this Texas pitching staff. And here's the
conversation you had with the media just a little while ago.
Speaker 10 (38:15):
A you got left handed pitcher Jared Spencer well up
straight into.
Speaker 11 (38:19):
Well Jeremany decided to transfer to Texas. Why was this
the place you wanted.
Speaker 9 (38:24):
To After looking at a couple of my options and
finding out Max Wiener was a head coach or a
pitching coach. To hearing all the great news about him,
I wanted to better myself and put myself in a
better place with the.
Speaker 11 (38:40):
Texas fans who want to know about you, How would
you describe what you can do in the mound?
Speaker 9 (38:45):
I'm ready to get after it. I don't know, I
feel like I don't show as much emotion out there,
but you know, I'm willing to continue this tradition.
Speaker 5 (38:54):
And culture here at Texas.
Speaker 9 (38:57):
Max max a bunch of good things, just from the
way he coaches to the ability of teaching players step
by step, and that's something that I wanted to continue learning,
especially with the track man too. How much did the
culture here in the new head coach after do.
Speaker 8 (39:17):
With provi decision A lot?
Speaker 9 (39:20):
I mean I came from a small min major so
there wasn't many fans there, and coming to a place
like Austin, I mean, there's no better place than that.
Speaker 12 (39:29):
Jared, I'm not asking to compare, you know, any previous coaches,
but how what stands out about Max as far as
his technique or wait and dewelos the.
Speaker 9 (39:35):
Pictures, I'd say the teaching ability, being able to learn
one on one and uh, just the way he teaches.
Speaker 5 (39:43):
I mean it's a fun.
Speaker 9 (39:44):
Way to learn. And Uh, I've learned a lot of
new things about track man, I've never learned before.
Speaker 8 (39:50):
What's the biggest crowd you would get in.
Speaker 9 (39:53):
I'm gonna say on a good Friday night, I'd say
close to twenty five hundred maybe three thousand.
Speaker 11 (39:59):
What'll sell there is a small major, but it made
a super regional What did you kind what did you
guys kind of what did you learn at Indiana State?
And kind of how did that help develop you?
Speaker 9 (40:07):
I compare like Indiana State to like Adju Goo. I
mean the greediness there. I mean we were taught to
worker butts off each and every day. I think that's
kind of what has stuck with me here.
Speaker 8 (40:19):
To do it? To go back to your act real quick?
Speaker 7 (40:21):
Do what what do you interpret when he says dominate
the zone?
Speaker 8 (40:24):
What?
Speaker 10 (40:25):
What in your mind does that mean?
Speaker 5 (40:27):
Throw it through the middle.
Speaker 9 (40:28):
I mean, don't be afraid to say here it is,
try and hit this.
Speaker 7 (40:31):
Really okay, don't do don't be afraid to just challenge
you guys straight up.
Speaker 10 (40:34):
Yes, sir, what is your most lethal pitch?
Speaker 9 (40:38):
I would say my fast far slider. What did it
mean to dominate in fun as well? Dominate in fun,
dominate the zone.
Speaker 10 (40:47):
Basically, it's just.
Speaker 9 (40:50):
Throwing as many strikes as possible and having fun while
doing it. Don't take this game too serious.
Speaker 8 (40:55):
What's the fastest you've been cocked?
Speaker 9 (40:57):
Fastest I've been cocked. I've been up to ninety Jared Rin.
Speaker 8 (41:02):
Question?
Speaker 12 (41:02):
Did you have to know any of the Indiana State
gouys in the basketball team?
Speaker 9 (41:04):
Budy Chance, Yes, Jason Kenton and uh, Julian Larry.
Speaker 5 (41:07):
Yes, sir.
Speaker 10 (41:07):
Did they kind of talk to you about Texas?
Speaker 5 (41:09):
Yes?
Speaker 8 (41:10):
What did you tell me?
Speaker 9 (41:11):
I mean, great, great things. It's way different than Indiana
State for sure, way bigger, And they said that's something
that you gotta get used to.
Speaker 10 (41:19):
Uh.
Speaker 9 (41:20):
I think the biggest thing was finding a scooter because.
Speaker 5 (41:22):
He can't walk.
Speaker 4 (41:24):
Do you all on campus?
Speaker 10 (41:26):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (41:27):
Yeah?
Speaker 9 (41:27):
So at Tank I always see him. I'll say, what's
up to them? I'm up gone to the basketball game.
It's pretty cool to see him again.
Speaker 4 (41:33):
So as a new guy.
Speaker 11 (41:34):
How the older that's kind of brought you in and
you talked to the culture and just kind of embraced you.
Speaker 9 (41:39):
Any other new comers at this term, I'd say, I mean,
first day I met Jalen Flores, I mean, and I
felt like everyone was welcoming. I mean, everyone kind of
takes you uno their wing at first, and then you
kind of understand your role here, whether it's your leader
or you're one of those guys to always talk to
(42:01):
and from the leaders that I've met, I mean, it's
awesome to understand the culture and the traditions here, and
that's something that I never knew about Texas before.
Speaker 8 (42:11):
Describe your style of pitching.
Speaker 9 (42:14):
I'd say fastball heavy, trying to attack early and then
try and use my whiteout slider for the end. What
excites you about your team? I guess everything. I mean,
a bunch of new faces, new culture here, and I'm
I'm excited to see what we can.
Speaker 10 (42:31):
Do this year.
Speaker 8 (42:33):
Are you the age of the staff.
Speaker 9 (42:35):
That I don't know yet? You know, when coach gets involved,
I'll be ready for it. Whether that's relieving or I'll
start this weekend, I'm not for sure yet.
Speaker 8 (42:44):
Since you been here. Is there anything you can identify
that is taking you to another level of the new
coaching and being of Texas.
Speaker 9 (42:51):
I'm'a say, like the buying end standpoint, whether that's buying
into the standards here, but I mean the coaches here
they try and have as much fun as possible with you.
And that's something that I enjoy the most. Because you
take this game too serious. I mean it's gonna.
Speaker 5 (43:08):
Act very quickly.
Speaker 8 (43:10):
That's likely you have an experience in the path.
Speaker 9 (43:12):
I'd say yes to know. I mean Indiana State was
I mean hard knows greedy and here, I mean you
can mess up sometimes and understand that.
Speaker 5 (43:24):
And that's what I'm learning right now.
Speaker 8 (43:27):
Did you visit other schools?
Speaker 5 (43:29):
I didn't.
Speaker 9 (43:30):
I didn't go on any visits.
Speaker 8 (43:31):
Did you consider other schooling? Did I consider?
Speaker 5 (43:34):
Yes?
Speaker 9 (43:36):
But I don't know Texas After I called him twice.
I think that was as soon as I made my decision.
Speaker 8 (43:43):
Anything else for Jared cool.
Speaker 1 (43:48):
I mean, there's the conversation with Jared Spencer the senior
transfer left hand or again, very gaudy numbers that he
put up, and you heard him ask if somebody asked him,
you know, what's the fastest you've been clocked.
Speaker 2 (44:01):
He said in ninety eight.
Speaker 1 (44:03):
He's a guy who can bring the heat, a left
hander who can bring the heat. And you know, he
said he doesn't know exactly what the role is yet,
and most of the pitchers, and you're gonna hear coming
up next segment, segment from another one, we'll tell you.
And we heard Andre de Planky you say this earlier.
They're more than happy and willing and excited and eager
(44:28):
to accept whatever role they're asked to accept, whether it's
as a starter or as a reliever. It would probably
be reasonable to assume that Jared Spencer will be a starter,
but we don't know that yet. We'll know by the
time we get to the other weekend.
Speaker 2 (44:44):
Things also, rolls.
Speaker 1 (44:47):
Modify and change a bit, especially early in the season.
Speaker 2 (44:51):
His roles are defined, and.
Speaker 1 (44:55):
Max Weener, the pitching coach, and Jim Schloasnagel obviously going
to great detail on what these guys are able to provide.
And you're gonna hear that coming up from our next guy,
who is primarily reliever and may well be reliever and
could possibly be closer for Texas, but he's willing to
do whatever the situation calls for him. That's Ruger Riojas,
(45:16):
who is an area of product originally from Wimberley but
went to middle school and in the in the Greater
Austin area. You'll hear him talk about that coming up.
We're here at UFCU just far Field. At least the
brain has stopped. It is chilly outside today, but no
Noball game today. It was just Texas Baseball Media Day
and giving you an opportunity to hear from long worn players.
(45:39):
And we'll hear from Jim Schlasniegel coming up tomorrow as
we draw closer to Friday's season opener in Arlington.
Speaker 2 (45:45):
Up next, we'll.
Speaker 1 (45:46):
Hear from the junior transfer right hand to Ruger Riojas.
That's that's up next when we continue here on AM
thirteen under the Zone. About an hour ago that I
commented on the fact I was gazing up with the
upper deck of I thirty five and say it's moving along, okay,
maybe thirty miles thirty five miles an hour. Ye, now
(46:09):
it's about fifteen to twenty, I would say. And I'm
watching an emergency vehicle go down the upper deck right now,
so it's probably going to slow down even more so,
we do be careful if you're out there for that
interesting that they're trying out and doing a lot of
different things here in preparation for the start of the season.
I mentioned that there it was kind of a partner
(46:30):
dust mode and they had a lot of equipment and
power tools and stuff like that, even here in the
radio broadcast booth that we're being used as storage as
they put together in a new television booth here, and
they're working on some things on the video board as well,
but on the regular scoreboard, and baseball fans who come
out here a lot, they know exactly what I'm talking about.
(46:50):
The regular one beyond the left field fence behind the
yetty yard has that signature script Texas on the front illuminated.
Speaker 2 (47:00):
Then it's got the you know, the line.
Speaker 1 (47:02):
Score listened there the first inning to the ninth inning,
and they still have it up from the last home
games the Longhorns played as a Big twelve Conference school
with the Kansas Jayhawks.
Speaker 2 (47:15):
They have the Jayhawk logo up there.
Speaker 1 (47:16):
And of course the home opener for Texas will be
a week from tonight against the Houston Cougars.
Speaker 2 (47:23):
That will be next week.
Speaker 1 (47:24):
They will open the season in Arlington on Friday against
Louisville Friday night at seven, then Saturday evening against Ole Miss,
and then Sunday evening against Oklahoma State. We heard a
few minutes ago from Jared Spencer, the left handed transfer
coming in from Indiana State. There's another transfer, right handed transfer,
(47:47):
a junior, Ruger Riojas, who's an area product. He's from
Wimberley and was a two year letterman at Wimberley. Two
time All State selection, had a one point two eight
ERA as a senior, led the Texans to back in
back to back district titles and then went to UTSA.
(48:10):
In his first season twenty twenty three years of freshman,
he appeared in twenty games with one start, five and
zero record, four to eleven er A. Last year as
a sophomore, he led the team in appearances twenty six appearances,
had one start, mainly used out of the bullpen, but
he led the team in wins with ten ERA at
three point twenty five, saves with seven, and strikeouts with
(48:32):
seventy five. He was All Conference second team in an
American Athletic Conference play. So this is a guy who
can fulfill a variety, can fill a variety of roles,
although many feel that he could wind up in being
the closure. That was one of the questions asked among many.
As we hear from the junior right hander Ruger Riojas.
Speaker 11 (48:54):
Jump straight into questions when he decided you on the
transfer come up to Tantungy.
Speaker 4 (49:00):
What kind of made Texas the place you wanted to
you wanted to come to me?
Speaker 13 (49:04):
Yeah, so, not only is it forty five minutes away
from my hometown of Wimberley, but the catching staff here
truly made this place feel like a tided family and
was just so comforting to me during the you know,
recruiting process and really helped me.
Speaker 10 (49:17):
Like it was almost like how could you not come here?
It's just you know, all the resources and staffed here
support you. It's it's unbelievable. I mean, there's no brainer
to come to UTA.
Speaker 4 (49:30):
Did you ever get a pitch against Texas?
Speaker 10 (49:31):
Really said, I did not?
Speaker 8 (49:33):
What was the sales pitch like from shlost and staff?
Speaker 13 (49:35):
Yeah, I mean Texas is historically the greatest baseball program
in college baseball. I'd compared to the Yankees of the
college baseball and schlast kept you know, wanted to bring
back to the standard of you know, the glory days
that you know, like the Clemons era and the gust Faller,
And that was something that you know, woul really resonated
with me. Cause if I I my goal here in
(49:57):
college is, you know, go to home Hall and win
the whole thing. I mean, it's always something I've wanted
to do. And I think that's the staff here is
that's their goal, and they're very goal oriented with you know,
meaning it.
Speaker 8 (50:09):
You look at the staff, you look at the roster.
Speaker 7 (50:12):
Is that a reasonable expectation in year one for this
for the staff to.
Speaker 8 (50:17):
Go to on on the whole thing?
Speaker 10 (50:18):
I think so.
Speaker 13 (50:19):
I think so we're very we're very very good pro program, staff, team, everything,
you know, We're excellent down to the core.
Speaker 10 (50:26):
So I think this is for a year one. I
think the expectations are perfect.
Speaker 8 (50:31):
Culture is a.
Speaker 10 (50:31):
Word that's going on a lot, just kind of the
Hubris and side.
Speaker 8 (50:34):
What specifically about the culture kind of stands out and
resonates with you.
Speaker 13 (50:37):
Yeah, excellence is number one. I think you know, the
entire staff and uh, everybody that is associated with Texas
Baseball is a big believer in excellence in all aspects
on the field. Off the field and everything you do,
and you know, breaking it down to the very you know,
core is just having good routines and you know, staying
(50:57):
with those routines and all those will compound to eventually
build up to excellence.
Speaker 10 (51:03):
What's your first memory of Texas baseball?
Speaker 13 (51:06):
Yeah, so I would say it was in eighth grade.
Me and Buddy came to a game they played TCU
and it was the game I remember that Cody Clements
did that walk off and went over the Taco Shacks sign.
Speaker 10 (51:20):
That was my first memory of Texas baseball.
Speaker 8 (51:22):
That was your first game here. That's a hell of
an introduction.
Speaker 7 (51:25):
Yeah, I mean, so so would you when you you
still probably have that capture in your mind of the fans.
Speaker 12 (51:31):
And the scene and all that, and it's just how
do you impart to like new players, like, hey, we're
trying to get to this spot in your mind and
it's gonna be awesome.
Speaker 13 (51:40):
Yeah, you know, taking everything one day at a time,
not looking too forward into the future and just truly
living out each day to the best of your ability.
And you know, like I said, having good habits with it.
You know, just making the right choices every day will
eventually build up to you know, Texas at Since.
Speaker 3 (52:00):
What's your participation for this weekend?
Speaker 8 (52:03):
Is everything new?
Speaker 3 (52:03):
Your first time? I mean to finally take the field.
What's it gonna be like for you?
Speaker 13 (52:07):
Yeah, just take it one day at a time, one
pitch at a time. I don't know what to expect.
I don't know if anybody knows what to expect. But
our goal is to win.
Speaker 8 (52:17):
Do you have a final role?
Speaker 13 (52:20):
Whatever coach wants me to do, I'll do. I just
want to help this program win. And you know, whatever
role he trusts me to do, I think I believe
is what he believes it will help the team wins.
Speaker 10 (52:30):
So whatever coach wants us to.
Speaker 8 (52:32):
Do, what is the slashest message for this weekend.
Speaker 13 (52:35):
Yeah, he's big into the routine. So you know, have
your routine going into this weekend starting. You know, way
back when we first got here, I wouldn't say it
was everything building up to this weekend. I would say
everything building up to today, and then once today's over,
everything building up into tomorrow. So it's really just taking
everything one day at a time. And we're not there
(52:57):
to play. The team are there to play the game.
The team's just who we have to get through to
win the game.
Speaker 12 (53:04):
When Texas hired Sloss, you were an outside observer of
the whole situation.
Speaker 10 (53:09):
Were you following what was going on with that?
Speaker 12 (53:11):
And have you ever seen a college baseball story kind
of get that much attention?
Speaker 1 (53:15):
Uh?
Speaker 10 (53:16):
No, I have not.
Speaker 13 (53:17):
I mean, I think the day I entered the portal
was like the day he got the job. And I mean,
of course there are some some backlash, but I think
it was a great move for him. You know, he's
a great coach, and I don't think he deserves any
of that hate. I mean, I'm sure anybody else anywhere
would have, you know, done what he did. But he's
a very excellent coach and is you know, he cares
(53:41):
about his players regardless of where they are.
Speaker 10 (53:43):
He is. He's amazing.
Speaker 13 (53:46):
Oh you coach Winner, He's great. He's really I mean,
I would say his point, you know, to be was
the uh the mental approach of the game. And you know,
just believing that you're good enough to pitch in the
sec and you know, when it's your time to be
on the mountain, you're the best picture in the world.
Speaker 10 (54:02):
And that's really what he hones in on.
Speaker 13 (54:04):
And you know, just being present with yourself on the game,
you know, not trying to look too forward ahead or
you know, in the past, just being yourself in the moment,
one pitch at a time.
Speaker 4 (54:14):
How do you how would you describe yourself as a picture?
Speaker 13 (54:18):
Yeah, I'd say relentless. I you know, if I'm giving
a game plan, I'm gonna stick to that game plan.
I'm gonna I'm gonna fail with that game plan regardless of,
you know, the outcome. I don't look forward to the outcome.
I just you know, try to win in the present.
Win one pitch at the time.
Speaker 8 (54:34):
What are all your pitch what are all your pictures? Yeah?
Speaker 13 (54:37):
So I throw a forcing fastball, a slider, a splitter,
and a curve. The slider, the curve, and the splitter
actually new. I started developing them this fall.
Speaker 10 (54:46):
Going back to what you said about flaws for a second.
Speaker 7 (54:48):
When you spoke with him a couple of weeks ago,
he said that doesn't any hobbies want to.
Speaker 13 (54:51):
Be your fault part of you guys, Oh yeah, no,
that's like yeah, yeah. Every during the winter he was like, man,
this is the worst time because I just can't heal
with you guys. That's just to get back to the ballparking.
We were all went there with them too. We just
couldn't wait to get back and you know, be together
work out our goal.
Speaker 8 (55:06):
Did you pitch the first game of the series with
a tesay?
Speaker 3 (55:10):
Was that right?
Speaker 8 (55:10):
Did you pitch the first game of every serious of
the ut So?
Speaker 10 (55:14):
Yeah? So the I was a reliever so always Yeah.
Speaker 13 (55:20):
So I mean I could pitch Friday, Saturday, Sunday, all
the all three days. I might not even throw the
ball Tuesday. I mean, just whenever they needed me. So
you would you like to be the closure?
Speaker 10 (55:30):
I mean, I don't really care about a particular role
to have this year.
Speaker 13 (55:35):
I'm I mean, I just love this team so much
and I really wanna just be the best teammate I
can and you know, help other guys around me, you know,
just be impactful to them and help them, you know,
have the winning mindset too.
Speaker 11 (55:49):
Since you've been here, is there something that you could
have tentified that help you raise your game?
Speaker 1 (55:54):
And then what is it?
Speaker 10 (55:55):
Yeah, I would definitely say the uh the mental train
that we have been doing.
Speaker 13 (55:58):
It started back in the fall with a guy named
Brian Kane who is a mental strength coach, and I
think some of the you know routines he's helped us
get into and brought us into, have helped out a lot,
and uh definitely just you know some of the things
we're working on.
Speaker 10 (56:14):
In practice with you know Max community.
Speaker 13 (56:16):
The big thing is, you know, taking it one pitch
at a time or one inning, save one pitch at
a time. Just really helping you stay present and not
trying to you know, get far away or get away
from your anchor, which is you know you and that's
what makes you the best, you know, the best version
of yourself.
Speaker 8 (56:32):
Anything else for your help.
Speaker 11 (56:34):
Slashed at your first game was the the Clemens game
against CaCu team he was coaching.
Speaker 1 (56:39):
I did not did not.
Speaker 10 (56:43):
Thank you, thank you.
Speaker 1 (56:44):
All right there it is Riojas uh the one time
Wimberley Texan and U t s a roadrunner. Now taxes
long worn look for a ruger in all probability to
be a man out of the bullpen who could really
uh make a big difference for this longer team. All right,
We'll be back to wrap up our number two from
here at UFCU Dish falk Field on Texas Baseball Media Day.
(57:06):
Here on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone, coming
away from UFCU Dish falk Field. It is Texas Long
Worn Baseball Media Day here at the ballpark, so we
had opportunity to hear from long Worton players, also from
head coach Jim schlastneg we'll hear from shlast Tomorrow. We
have one more player we're going to hear from this
our Will Gasparino, the LONGRRN sophomore outfielder coming off that
freshman campaign last year. We'll hear from Will a little
(57:28):
bit later on this half hour Long worn basketball. Tonight,
Texas men hosts the number two team in the country,
the Alabama Crimson Tide. It is interesting I find that
Auburn is number one and Alabama's number two, those two
our rivals. Whatever happened to Uke in North Carolina, right Carolina,
(57:49):
by the way, in a bad way right now after
losing by twenty at Clemson last night. I think they're
fourteen and eleven now and they're listed as being a
bubble team. I mentioned some of Joe Lenardi's bracketology last
hour where he still has Texas in the field and
has them as one of the last four buys, meaning
not slated for Dayton and the first four, but the
(58:14):
schedule doesn't get any easier right now with upcoming games
against Alabama tonight in Kentucky on Saturday. So it's it's
going to be a difficult grind for Texas coming up,
but that's where he has it right now. And Auburn
and Alabama one and two they play Saturday in Tuscaloos,
and I think ESPN College Game Day is going there,
(58:36):
whereas they've never been for an Alabama Auburn basketball game,
but they will this they will this week.
Speaker 2 (58:42):
For game Day. Now.
Speaker 1 (58:45):
Another thing I wanted to get to I mentioned the
court storming thing, that that that Vanderbilt is trying to
what they call it kind of almost legalized court storming
in a way that it doesn't end danger the players,
the teams, the coaches, the officials, things like that, because
they have been the most fined school in the country
(59:08):
eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars in fines, and so
they have this new policy where they let fans enjoy
a big win and come on to the floor, but
they're not allowed to come on to the floor until
there's a what they say is a one minute delay
at the end of the game in order to give
(59:28):
the players coaches and officials time to lead the floor. Now,
I will tell you this in the case of Vanderbilt,
because this is what they did Saturday. It isn't so
much about letting the Vanderbilt players lead the floor because
they want to celebrate with the students and the fans.
It's to allow the opposing team to safely depart the floor.
(59:51):
Same thing with the officials and the because the players
are doing a victory laugh.
Speaker 2 (59:56):
I pointed this out on.
Speaker 1 (59:58):
The broadcast because they had security personnel extend this long
rope down the length of the floor. And of course
we talked quite a bit last week about how unusual
Vanderbilt's media setup is anyway, because the arena where they
play in Memorial.
Speaker 2 (01:00:15):
Gymnasium is less of gymnasium and.
Speaker 1 (01:00:18):
More like a concert hall triple deck, and it's almost
like one like a Carnegie Hall type of thing, and
so as some have called it the old opera house.
Speaker 2 (01:00:30):
Well, anyway, it's.
Speaker 1 (01:00:33):
Almost like the game itself is contested on a stage
and we're kind of almost below level there at like
thigh level or whatever, and so stretching the length of
the floor of the rope were the security personnel now
they really didn't have to worry about a court storming
(01:00:54):
because again Vanderbilt being an unranked Texas team and that's
not necessarily worth storming a court over uh Texas name notwithstanding.
So they didn't do that, but the players did a
victory lap. But I pointed out that if they're really
that concern about court storming, having the players do a
victory lap probably doesn't help them achieve their rejective.
Speaker 2 (01:01:14):
What I did not know at the time.
Speaker 1 (01:01:16):
And then and again, this was an ESPN story that
came out that was their guinea pig game for this
new policy where they allow the players and coaches and
officials time to safely leave the floor. And again, the
fans didn't storm the court, but it could be put
to the test tonight because Auburn plays at Vanderbilt, so
(01:01:39):
we'll see, you know, fans stormed the court after Vanderbilt
beat Tennessee and Kentucky, so they have wins there. So
so now they're they're trying to, you know, do that
in a different way where it makes a little more sense.
Speaker 8 (01:01:55):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:01:56):
That's one basketball note to point out. The other one
that I wanted to point out was something I mentioned
in the first hour of the program, and that was
this business with Dallas Mavericks ownership and management treatment of
its own fan base, not just because of the trade
(01:02:21):
which has sparked all of this, the trade of Luka
Doncic to the Lakers, and it kind of, you know,
had a flash point, if you will, last night.
Speaker 2 (01:02:34):
The flash point.
Speaker 1 (01:02:37):
Happened in two places, Dallas, where the Mavericks were hosting
the Sacramento Kings, and Los Angeles, where the Lakers were
hosting Utah in Luka Doncict's debut, and by all measures
in La it was successful. Luke had fourteen points, He
played twenty four minutes, added some rebounds and assists. He
(01:02:58):
and Lebron James seem to work well together. They're very
excited in Los Angeles and they should be. Rob polink
At the general managers said it was a gift that
they got by way of this trade.
Speaker 2 (01:03:11):
And it is the general.
Speaker 1 (01:03:13):
Perspective of those who analyze the trade that the Mavericks
were fleeced. Now, it's not that Anthony Davis's chop liver.
In fact, he played well until he hurt. It got hurt.
But the problem is is that Anthony Davis and the
long ones do need or excuse me, the Mavericks do
need a low post presence inside. He really struggles to
(01:03:34):
stay healthy, and he's out again and could be out
a few weeks with an abdominal injury, so he could
be out for a time. So all that has done
is ad to the frustration. And then last night Maverick
fans expressed the frustration a lot of booze. There were
a couple of fans that held up signs that said
fire Nico, as in Nico Harrison, the general manager who
(01:03:58):
made the deal. Those fans were removed from the arena
and one fan's face got on the big jumbo tron
and he was mouthing the words fire Niko. Well, they
went down there and removed him. The Mavericks management kind
of hid behind an NBA rule that says if you're
displaying either obscene or distasteful or threatening thing toward any
(01:04:22):
one specific person, you can be removed and that and
that was their uh, the reasoning behind that. There were
other fans who were rejected as well. One guy who
had I thought a really good take on this. Now
he gets pretty incendiary in his comments and I have
to clean it up a little.
Speaker 2 (01:04:41):
Bit as I read it to you.
Speaker 1 (01:04:44):
If you've ever if you remember the Dallas Stars in
their heyday, had just a wonderful play by play voice
in Ralph Strangers. He eventually retired, and h and Josh
Bogorat does an outstanding job in podcasting the Stars along
with Darryl Razor. Ray and Ralph and Razor worked together
(01:05:05):
for several years. Ralph still does a column for Substack,
and he went after the Mavericks management and ownership guns
Ablazon last night.
Speaker 2 (01:05:19):
The headline was MAV's.
Speaker 1 (01:05:20):
Follow incredibly bad with horrifically stupid, and they said, following
the Luka Doncicch trade, the Dallas Mavericks insult be a
little and muzzle their fan base while publicly trashing the
generational icon they shipped away.
Speaker 2 (01:05:36):
So he wrote this. He actually wrote this before Luca
was on the floor.
Speaker 1 (01:05:43):
It started with Luka Doncicch returns to the NBA tonight
or returns to NBA action tonight. He said a week
ago that sentence, reported on the air on a local
radio sports ticker would have been welcome news to the
Dallas sports community. Today, it's another violent blow to a
shaken fan. And then I'll skip on down to some
(01:06:03):
of this.
Speaker 2 (01:06:05):
He said. It's a very sad day for Dallas Mavericks fans.
Speaker 1 (01:06:10):
He said, for Luka doncis at the very least, he
was summarily screwed out of one hundred million dollars and
jerked out of his home without a moment's notice. Reports
of him recently buying a new house in the community
only adds to the sadness. I believe he had no
idea any of this was remotely possible. We could go
this was unthinkable. Now it's reality, and the fan base
is hurting, big time hurting. And the worst part, the
(01:06:32):
Dallas Mavericks don't care. In fact, they've gone out of
their way to show exactly how little regard this new
ownership group and GM have for their fan base and
for the player who led them to the twenty twenty
four NBA Finals and led them in the NBA Finals
and most scoring categories, And they keep doubling down on
the lazy Luca narrative, and that now and that now
(01:06:53):
they have players who can.
Speaker 2 (01:06:54):
Get them into the NBA finals.
Speaker 1 (01:06:56):
If Mavericks ownership regards their fans at all, it is
only with contempt The trade was one thing. But the
way this organization has mishandled the blowback, which apparently they
didn't think was going to be a thing, is disrespectful
and disgusting. The way they've treated their fans is offensive,
he said. Here's what I've gleaned the message from the
(01:07:19):
team to the fans since the deal was made. Number
one f off, Like I said, I have to clean
up some of this. Number two Luca was fatten out
of shape. Number three, we will not be accountable to
any of you. Who do you think you are? And
again this is Ralph Strange's writing this, he said. And
because they're such sleazy cowards, they leave a lot of
(01:07:39):
the explaining to others inside and outside of their organization.
Some team adjacent media aren't even bothering to hide their
intimacy with these corrupt pillagers. They've traded actual reporting for
daily work as stenographers and parrot company lines. They attack
other media for not falling in line with them or
their storylines. This type of reporting, these type of relationships,
(01:08:01):
sadly are everywhere in sports. My old colleague and friend,
Mark Followell, was used as a shield at the introductory
press conference for the players coming in they were too
scared to face objective reporters. Mark is a good soldier
and a good man. They put him in a bad spot,
and I'm going to guess they didn't even think about
what they were asking him to do. I'm a guy
(01:08:21):
who's had the job like that, telling you how it
usually is. The arena workers, these wonderful people, many of
whom I created deep bonds with over the years while
calling Dallas Stars games at the building, were asked to
turn on the people they have real relationships with, the fans.
These jobs are second jobs for most of them, and
(01:08:42):
they work so hard they're tired. But they always smile
with speak with celebrate, and commiserate with everyone in the building.
There are only a few things I miss, but I
miss all of those people.
Speaker 2 (01:08:53):
The workers, some became real friends, all care deeply about
being there.
Speaker 1 (01:08:56):
But by all accounts, arena and staff and security people
were the ones who were told to ask people to
remove shirts, hats, and to not speak or chant derogatorily
toward ownership or the GM. These snowflake executives are apparently
so scared of hearing any descent or having anyone question
(01:09:17):
him if gasp, Nico Harrison had to see T shirts
in the stands that weren't reverential to him and the owners.
Speaker 2 (01:09:23):
What the world stopped spinning?
Speaker 1 (01:09:26):
Unfortunately, we seem to be in an age of the
powerful shutting down or attempting to shut down opposition voices
shutting down you us fans.
Speaker 2 (01:09:35):
We saw it Saturday. They don't want to own the trade.
Speaker 1 (01:09:38):
They wouldn't deliver the message themselves and have the executive
team man the doors, greet the fans, offer kind words
and let them grieve together.
Speaker 2 (01:09:45):
However they needed to do that. No empathy at all
from this bunch. No brains either.
Speaker 1 (01:09:50):
Likely this is being at least partially handled by some
expensive outside PR firm. In my experience, those kinds of
outfits are wrong way more than right on strategy. If
the Mavericks had let the fans get it out, and
it won't be just one game, but if they face it,
this will fade and then they can start the healing
and work to bring everyone back together around a team
(01:10:12):
that they think is even better now after the trade. Instead,
they decided to muzzle their fans and customers. How chicken
bleep is that. I've worked in professional sports for for
forty years. I wish I could tell you that this
isn't typical sports executive behavior, because while this is on
a level of its own, the behavior and mindset of
these and he uses another word is extremely typical. But
(01:10:36):
few things compare to this and their frontman, this Patrick
Dumont person. I get PTSD just looking at him. I've
never met him, but I know this out of shaped
guy with a bad hair in the front py suit
who thinks he's the bleep too.
Speaker 2 (01:10:50):
Well, this is a hit piece. Continue at your own discretion.
Speaker 1 (01:10:53):
Again, that's Ralph Strangis who wrote that former play by
play voice of the Dallas Stars, and there are similar
pieces right now, absolutely roasting the Mavericks. A for the
trade obviously, B for how they've treated the fans and
removing fans for booing, and removing fans for saying fire
(01:11:14):
Nico highly highly hyper sensitive. All right, up next, we'll
shift back to log horns. We'll shift back to the
log horn baseball. We're gonna hear from Will Gasparino, Texas
outfielder coming up next when we continue on this Texas
Baseball media day at UFCU dish fouk field.
Speaker 2 (01:11:29):
I'm thirteen under the zone on.
Speaker 1 (01:11:31):
The two after Longhorn baseball team is actually out on
the field. Now you can hear the pop of the
ball into the mid is some early throwing going on
today they had the mediada and we're gonna hear from
Will Gasparino in just a moment, the Longhorns outfielder, a
couple of other things wanted to get to one already
quite a bit of response there to that blog, that
(01:11:54):
piece written by Ralph strangis a lot of folks feeling
that it is indeed spot on by the former Dallas
Stars play by play voice who writes for Substack, and
his absolute evisceration of Mavericks' new ownership.
Speaker 2 (01:12:11):
And management less.
Speaker 1 (01:12:13):
I mean, yeah, definitely criticism for the trade, but it
was more about the way in which they've treated the fans.
And that's what I think shocked so many people last night,
that the Mavericks, who've always had a really good relationship with.
Speaker 2 (01:12:28):
Their fan base.
Speaker 1 (01:12:29):
I mean, it goes all the way back when I
was in college, the Mavericks expansion year nineteen eighty eighty one.
I was in college and my best friend Alex and
I who you know, people know my story to know
that I sold t shirts at concerts at Reunion Arena
in Houston and other places, put myself through school, and
we also worked that Mavericks expansion season eighty eighty one.
(01:12:51):
We sold merch sold merchandise for the Mavericks. Didn't selling
awful lot in a fifteen and sixty seven expansion year,
but we worked it. But even from that first day
when Don Carter was the owner, they were and Rick
Son was the general manager, they were always about trying
to make sure they had a great relationship with the fans.
And it went all the way even through the lean
(01:13:13):
times when they had some ownership that wasn't the best.
And then when Mark Cuban took over, he was determined
to rebuild that relationship with the fans and they did
and that's where the MFFL the MAVs Fans for Life
thing came about and their drive toward a championship and
all of that. But you know a lot of people
(01:13:35):
upset with what happened last night with fans being removed
from the arena just for saying fire Nico or having
the sign up a little placard or a T shirt
or whatever that kind of thing, and that they will
brook no opposition whatsoever on this deal, and have a
feeling the final chapter has not been written on this.
There's going to be more about this in the days
(01:13:57):
and weeks to come. All right, let's roll it back
to long Horn baseball. Will Gasparino, of course, is entering
his sophomore season as a Texas Longhorn, and Will clearly
made his impression in his first season as a Loghorn
(01:14:18):
as a freshman last year, coming in from Los Angeles,
and you know, there was all that talk about him
possibly winding up with Oklahoma State, with Billy Gasprino's dad
having been there and all that, and so that you'll
hear some of that asked of him, because Texas will
play Oklahoma State the third game of that Shriner's Children's
(01:14:41):
Baseball Challenge this weekend in Arlington. But last year he
hit two fifty two, twelve home runs, forty seven runs
batted in, had ten multi hit games, twelve multiple RBI games,
big fellow at sixty six, and he's put on some
pounds as well, and he talks about that. So here's
the conversation with the Walgorn's outfielder, Will Gasprino.
Speaker 3 (01:15:05):
Yeah, yeah, don't raise up through if everyone needs a second,
is the race take.
Speaker 8 (01:15:16):
Dang? I mean, if.
Speaker 7 (01:15:19):
Everyone's good, goods one second, that's good.
Speaker 5 (01:15:24):
Corey good, very good.
Speaker 7 (01:15:27):
Outfielder Will Gasparino will jump straight into question.
Speaker 10 (01:15:30):
I think we can pass you this question.
Speaker 11 (01:15:32):
Last year and they came down here, but you talked
to a smack your dad about Sunday's Sunday's game.
Speaker 10 (01:15:38):
Sunday's game was Sundays game Foklahoma State.
Speaker 12 (01:15:40):
Oh oh yeah, he's he'll be there so, I mean
last year he flew in town for the Oakland State
game as well.
Speaker 10 (01:15:49):
But it's just a fun series.
Speaker 12 (01:15:50):
We're very close family friends with the Holidays, so it's
kind of funny playing against each other. But I've always
respected them and nothing but good things to say and
looking forward to Sunday.
Speaker 11 (01:16:03):
How at you're kind of looking forward to this whole
weekend and the season started and kind of seeing what
the team looks like with the new coaching said.
Speaker 10 (01:16:09):
I'm excited.
Speaker 12 (01:16:12):
We did a really good job in the offseason getting
portal guys, and I feel like we've prepared for the
last five to six months and we can't wait to play.
Speaker 10 (01:16:21):
It's been a while. How new do things feel? Just
with a new staff and so many new players.
Speaker 8 (01:16:25):
Is there a lot of newness here?
Speaker 10 (01:16:28):
Not really.
Speaker 12 (01:16:28):
It kind of feels like we've known all the guys
for the last few years. I think we get along
very well and she's a great group of guys.
Speaker 13 (01:16:34):
Coach said that you've invested a lot of time in
your body and really understood what the weight program is
all about.
Speaker 8 (01:16:40):
How do you feel and did you really get after
it in the weight room? Yeah?
Speaker 12 (01:16:45):
I think coach couches a really good job this offseason
and getting a sec ready and building our bodies to
the max and to what we've always wanted to. So, yeah,
I gained fifteen twenty pounds this offseason and I always
knew being a longer guide and.
Speaker 10 (01:16:59):
To stay strong, but Coach Cotch is done a really
good job of that.
Speaker 8 (01:17:02):
What is the mail plans? LA line?
Speaker 10 (01:17:04):
Oh, eating a lot? The tank? We have the tank here.
It's like our dining hall for athletes.
Speaker 12 (01:17:11):
And very fortunate enough to have that, well your head
coach at Pace Texas in Nebraska, because he's always there
in the summer.
Speaker 4 (01:17:17):
On how big an inside the visit for you guys,
given his resume, how much hope.
Speaker 8 (01:17:23):
Does that give you to get back there.
Speaker 12 (01:17:25):
I think it's really cool to have a coach such
great as all the accomplishments he's done and had, and
I respect him a lot, and both coaching staff is
last year as well, nothing but the best. They've always
supported me and yeah, I can't wait to get after
it this year.
Speaker 8 (01:17:42):
What was your first conversation with schlast line?
Speaker 12 (01:17:46):
Probably this summer. Just can't wait too after things. I
think he was super busy. You know, it was so
last minute, so it was a quick like hello, how
you doing? But yeah, it was just stoked to have
you looking forward to see you're on the field. So
we have to guess what the secret to his success
is to get into you know, the final days in Omaha,
(01:18:07):
what you've been on the inside. What makes him such
a great coach? How does he get the team? I
think coach Slosh just the way he leads. He's a
very good leader. We just take every day set by
step and day by day. There's no getting ahead, and
no matter who we're playing, it's just we play to
a standard, not to a scoreboard. And I would say
just the way the structure is and how you pay
(01:18:30):
attention to little details.
Speaker 10 (01:18:31):
It's a big difference.
Speaker 12 (01:18:32):
What do you think is could be the biggest difference
between you and your first year and you entering the
second season as kind of a full time starter or
one of the one of the best returns on this team.
I think having a little more experience definitely helps. For sure,
putting on physically helps.
Speaker 8 (01:18:44):
For sure.
Speaker 12 (01:18:46):
We're lucky enough to have coach too Low this year
and we've done a lot of great things and with
all the hitters and cages this year, and so I
think all those things will have a big impact and change.
Speaker 13 (01:18:57):
And what have you seen from a Tommy Farmers that
some whey things gonna be going after position a little
bit playing.
Speaker 8 (01:19:02):
Some gage there.
Speaker 12 (01:19:02):
Yeah, that's my roommates. So we were always competing against
each other. But we have a great group of outfielders
and everyone could be starting an outfield you never know.
So I think it just motivates us to work harder.
And it's honestly a good thing with such a good
amount of great outfitters.
Speaker 8 (01:19:18):
What is being sec ready me and you?
Speaker 10 (01:19:24):
Honestly, it's just playing the best of the best.
Speaker 12 (01:19:27):
I've always wanted to playgainst the best of the best,
and I love the competition and that's what I played
this game for. I love to win, but I think
it's just the biggest baseball in college.
Speaker 7 (01:19:37):
And yeah, we was just out here and he said
that he believed that getting to Omaha winning the College
World Series are reasonable goals for a year one of
his cultures there.
Speaker 8 (01:19:46):
Do you agree are those reasonable goals?
Speaker 5 (01:19:50):
I mean that's the main goal and we're gonna do
whatever it takes to win.
Speaker 4 (01:19:54):
What are your thoughts on Easton and what he brings
to this winfield.
Speaker 10 (01:19:59):
Oh, it was a great pickup off the portal this summer.
Super talented, good kid. I think he's an help with
our team a lot this year. Obviously a lot of
it faces on the pitching staff.
Speaker 12 (01:20:10):
What have you kind of seen him when you're facing
those guys, But so are some of the things that
you've noticed about them. I think they just they got
good stuff. And there's no there's no guy that's like
an easy at that. It's every single out bad is
super tough and you can't slack off at all.
Speaker 10 (01:20:26):
It's a great pitching staff. Coach Winer does a really
good job with that.
Speaker 12 (01:20:29):
Well, what stands up about Adrian Rodbras, Oh, he's I
think he's still seventeen eight he's young, but he's almost
like an older guy. He's not scared of anyone. Came
in super confident, he's performed, super talented. I mean, he's
just really good as that for a guy.
Speaker 10 (01:20:46):
Who's seventeen eighteen to kind of have.
Speaker 12 (01:20:48):
That mentality, Yeah, I think it's really hard coming I
mean I experienced it last year. It's really hard coming
into college baseball, big time session in the SEC and
just being able to have confidence and just be yourself
around all the guys. I mean usually it takes a
few years for some kids. But he's done a really
good job of being comfortable and just doing what he does.
Speaker 8 (01:21:07):
And you have to provide him a little guidance.
Speaker 12 (01:21:08):
Not that you do that a little bit, Yeah, especially
when he struggles like which I'll try to support him
if he ever needs anything.
Speaker 10 (01:21:16):
He's more with the.
Speaker 12 (01:21:16):
Infielders a lot, but yeah, I mean him being he's
going to be big time player for us this year,
so whenever he needs help, I try to talk to him.
Speaker 8 (01:21:25):
Do you think you are going to shock people this year?
Speaker 10 (01:21:28):
I think so.
Speaker 12 (01:21:28):
I mean I think in your University of Texas kind
of do what we usually do yeah, anything else for well, I.
Speaker 8 (01:21:36):
Got a one more of the added weight. What have
you seen the effects? Just have to play.
Speaker 12 (01:21:40):
Just consistency. My body is a fatigue as much. I'm
just stronger, still able to run, throw and I mean power.
Uh that helps a little bit, but honestly, just being
able to be more consistent every day just it helps.
Speaker 10 (01:21:57):
For sure.
Speaker 8 (01:21:57):
You don't have any calaries your reading today?
Speaker 12 (01:21:59):
Oh, watching fla A Nuggets for sure, watch probably six
maybe bottom milkshakes at night. Pretty much eat whatever you want,
just as much as you can.
Speaker 2 (01:22:16):
Nice.
Speaker 10 (01:22:17):
It kind of took out.
Speaker 1 (01:22:23):
I accept that from the guy six feet six inches
in height that he's told eat as much as you can,
as long as you can. Can you imagine consuming six
thousand calories a day.
Speaker 2 (01:22:39):
That's a lot.
Speaker 5 (01:22:40):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:22:41):
I try to stay away from that much consumption myself.
All right, that's Longhorn's outfielder, Will Gasparino. We've got some
more coming up. I got a couple of women's basketball
notes to get to and it's more as well in
the NBA when we continue here on this Tuesday afternoon
on thirteen under the Zone, got somebody on the tax
line menting on my my recollection of that Dallas Mavericks
(01:23:03):
expansion season of nineteen eighty eighty one that had guys
on that team like Abdul Jelami, Brad Davis, Tom Leguard,
the late Bill Robinsine and then and Jim spinarcle and
(01:23:27):
and Scott Lloyd was another one on that expansion Mavericks
team from eighty eighty one. And somebody said the expansion
Mavericks would have made a killing selling Jim's spinacle hair gel.
Speaker 2 (01:23:38):
I couldn't agree more.
Speaker 1 (01:23:40):
Spando had that as they knew him, had that had
his hair just kind of like Jimmy Johnson's, perfectly quaffed.
It was up to the way he could play with
it like that, So there had to be considerable amounts
of gel involving in that involved in that expansion season
of eighty eighty one.
Speaker 2 (01:23:59):
Jumping to.
Speaker 1 (01:24:01):
Women's college basketball, I mentioned this yesterday, but the updated
bracketologies had not yet been released yesterday, even with the
Logorns coming off that win over South Carolina on Sunday. Well,
and at the time I mentioned that going into the
(01:24:22):
Sunday game, Texas was already listed by Charlie Cream, who's
kind of pretty much viewed as the lead bracketologist of
those who cover the women's game, there's two. There's two,
or there's actually three that I kind of followed, but
the one, the one that Charlie Cream does, is probably
closer to being on point.
Speaker 2 (01:24:44):
I would not say his.
Speaker 1 (01:24:48):
His hit rate, his on point percentages as high as
Joe Lenardi with the men, but Leonardi has been doing
this for, you know, twenty five thirty years.
Speaker 2 (01:24:59):
Joe's been doing it for long time.
Speaker 1 (01:25:00):
He's written a book about it, and that's why he's
in that ninety six to ninety eight percentile where he's
hitting nearly.
Speaker 2 (01:25:07):
All of them just about.
Speaker 1 (01:25:08):
And I think last year or was the year before,
he got ninety nine percent of them and had the
vast majority of the ones, also seeded properly, and most
of them in the regions, which is really difficult to
figure out because the tournament selection committee tries to balance
out the bracket as best it can in terms of
where they're sending teams. It's a little bit easier to
(01:25:29):
do that with the women because the women, the top
four seeds in each of the four regions get to
play at home the first weekend, so it's a little
bit easier call to make on that, but beyond that,
it gets into a big guessing game as well.
Speaker 2 (01:25:44):
Well.
Speaker 1 (01:25:44):
Going into the weekend prior to the South Carolina game,
Charlie Kream had Texas as a one seed. He had
him in Spokane, and it made me smile to hear
that because it made me think about Vick Schaeffer, the
log One's head coach, when I had him on the
show last week. We're talking about this and for those
of you who don't know that, one of the major
(01:26:05):
differences with the women's sixty eighteen bracket as opposed to
the men's sixty eighteen bracket is that the women play
first and second round on home sites, as we mentioned,
the top four seeds in each region, whereas the men's
tournament is completely.
Speaker 2 (01:26:25):
You know, neutral courts.
Speaker 1 (01:26:27):
Now, let's be honest, there are some courts that are
more neutral than others, ones that are closed. Like, for example,
Raleigh is one of the first and second round sites
for the men. There's a real good chance Duke is
going to be playing there. That's twenty minutes from the
Duke campus. It's not their home floor, it's in fact,
it's in c State's on floor. But it's a chance
for their fan base to be there. And it's like
(01:26:50):
that across the country in different places where teams that
are really really good get a chance to play close
to home but not on their true home court. Well,
in the women tournament, the top four seeds in each
region do play on their home floor. That is, to
be quite honest to bolster. Attendance is a big part
(01:27:11):
of it, and it's also to reward the teams that
are near the top of their regions.
Speaker 2 (01:27:17):
So there's that, and so Texas of course.
Speaker 1 (01:27:23):
Would figure to be at home, which they have been
all four years that prior seasons of Big Shaffer as
the head coach, and they will be again this year.
Beyond that, it'll be interesting to see where they go.
But and here's the other major difference between the women's
tournament the men's turnament. The men's tournament has eight different
(01:27:45):
neutral sites as we know, for first and second round.
Then they have four completely different sites for the Sweet
sixteen and the Elite eight the regional sites. The women
who have sixteen first round sites because it's on home courts,
then follow that up with only two regional sites.
Speaker 2 (01:28:06):
But they do have four regions.
Speaker 1 (01:28:07):
They just happened to have two at each site, and
they did this last year for the first time, and
they utilized in those two regions Albany and they utilize
which is not far from the Yukon campus obviously, and
they utilized Portland, Texas in the past had gone even
(01:28:31):
when they were using four different regional sites, has been
sent West pretty consistently, spoke Ine Washington in the past
and Portland last year. This year the two regional sites
are Birmingham for two of the spots and Spokane for
the other two. And when I brought this up to
Vic Schaeffer, I said, last year you mentioned going into
(01:28:54):
this when somebody asked you what you thought of this
concept of two regions at the same site, and you said,
I want to go through it a year and see
what I think of it.
Speaker 2 (01:29:03):
First asked me. Afterwards.
Speaker 1 (01:29:05):
I said, so I'm asking you now one year later,
and he said, I don't like it. And the reason
he didn't like it is because it really compresses the
practice time and the court time and all that sort
of stuff. Because you have eight schools utilizing that same floor.
It's like a first and second round for the men's site.
And he brought up the fact that they had the
late game Friday night against Gonzaga beat them in Portland,
(01:29:29):
and then had the first practice time on the off
day on Saturday, and it had to be in the
morning because they had the other regional going on in
the afternoon the Saturday Monday, and so that was the
problem there. So he and he said, you can get
dollars to donuts. They're going to send us to Spokane.
They'll send us way out west. Well, this is why
(01:29:51):
I said, I chuckled, and I smile when I looked
at Charlie Kream's bracket projection. The four number one seeds
he has of the this morning are UCLA, South Carolina,
Notre Dame, and Texas. He has UCLA in Spokane, he
(01:30:12):
has South Carolina in Birmingham, he has Notre Dame in
Birmingham in that separate regional but in the same city,
same arena, And he has Texas in Spokane.
Speaker 2 (01:30:22):
So that's why I was kind of chuckling about that.
Speaker 1 (01:30:24):
Now doesn't mean it's gonna stay that way, but for
now he has that, and he has the long WRNS
is the number one seed in what's called Region four
Spokane as opposed to Region one Spokane, meaning the winners
of those two regionals, both being played on the same floor,
would then meet in the Final four in Tampa. If
they advance. In this case, it would be Texas in UCLA.
And I'll be honest with you, I've said this. Ucla
(01:30:46):
is number one, They're undefeated, they have a win over
South Carolina, so I have no quipple with them being
number one. But I think South Carolina is a better team.
Vick Schaefer said as much on a post game the
other day. He said, no slide against Ucla. Just think
South Caroline's a better team.
Speaker 2 (01:31:00):
I do too.
Speaker 1 (01:31:01):
I've seen them a play and I know they beat
South Carolina early in the year. I think if they
were to play now, it'd be different. I think it
might be different if Texas were playing Notre Dame right now.
They remember they lost to the Irish in South Men
in overtime back in December in that acc SEC Challenge.
But they have Texas has the one seed, with the
(01:31:21):
other teams coming to Austin being Tennessee Tech, who they
would face in a one versus sixteen matchup, and the
eight nine matchup would be Louisville and Iowa. So that's
what he's got there, and he has ten teams from
the SEC getting into the tournament. So that's an updated
bracketological prognostication for the Texas women as them is a
(01:31:41):
one seed, has them in Spokane from here at Ufcu
Diish falk Field on Am thirteen under the Zone
