Speaker 2 (00:00):
Glad to have you with us.

Speaker 1 (00:01):
And I think I've said this before, you know, one
of the fun things about doing the show. I obviously
am not in Paris, and I don't have Noah Eagles jobs.
I wasn't doing play by play of the US Olympic
men's basketball team semifinal. But it was a lot of

(00:22):
fun just to sit there and relay the message along,
to kind of be like the ticker if you will.
And you know, I don't know if folks know this state.
The origins of that sort of reporting in sports anyway,
really began in the early twentieth century, like in the

(00:43):
early World Series, like nineteen oh three when it was
Boston against Pittsburgh, nineteen oh five when it was the
A's against the Giants six White Sox Cubs. Those early
World Series, you would have a man who would stand
outside with a megaphone and there would be somebody changing

(01:05):
cards on a scoreboard. In fact, as it got a
little later around nineteen oh eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve,
they had like a little electric scoreboard where they would
put up like you know, if runners were on base,
kind of like what you see an electronic baseball game.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
That was in the early twentieth century.

Speaker 1 (01:20):
But they would and people would gather around. Just watch
this dude stand there on a platform with a megaphone
and say, the Giants just scored two runs in the
bottom of the third and they lead the A's the
Athletics three to one.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
You know that sort of thing.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
So good to be able to relay the information along
to those of you who were not near a television
or driving or just whatever and couldn't and couldn't see
what was going on in Paris in that Olympic men's
basketball semifinal. But Team USA did survive, they did advance.
They're onto the championship round. They'll be playing for a

(02:01):
gold medal Saturday afternoon at two thirty. They won and
really got pushed to the limit by Serbia. Serbia led
i say, virtually the entire game. They led it all
the way until there was about three minutes to go,
and led by as many as fifteen, and led by

(02:21):
fifteen with thirty seconds to go in the third quarter,
and led by twelve in the in the fourth quarter. There, So, yeah,
it was it was something else. So and for the
for the Americans to turn around and get to win

(02:42):
it was it was impressive to see. Of course, the
US women's team has advanced to the gold medal round
and they'll be playing for the gold, so it's good
to see them when women's Olympic volleyball will be playing
for a gold medal as well. So the metal count
continues to rise for Team USA. And not only does

(03:05):
the metal count continue to rise, but the gold medal
count continues to rise as.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Well for the Americans.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
And in looking at it and checking the metal tracker
as they call it, right now, the US with one
hundred and three total medals one hundred and three, they
lead by more than thirty over the next closest pursuer
that's China with seventy two, and then the host nation

(03:34):
France with fifty three. By the way, that's a record
for France for metal count for the home nation there.
And then in gold medals, the US has the lead
there only by two over China, but they do have
it thirty twenty eight. They have a thirty eight twenty
five edge and the silver and a thirty five nineteen
edge in the bronze, So the US has the lead
in all four metal categories gold, silver, bronze, and total

(03:59):
metal right now. So they've done they've done very very well.
Off of that, Long Worn Football continues to work and
get ready for their first scrimmage coming up and that
will be on Saturday morning inside of d k R
Texas Memorial Stadium. And uh, you know, we heard from

(04:22):
Long Wort's head coach Steve Sarkisian earlier talked about how
they move forward.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
They move on without C. J.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
Baxter after Baxter had the knee injury and that will
require off season or resurgery and he'll miss the entire
season as a result of that. He talked at length
about the running back position. Jayden Blue, Trey Wisner, Jerrick Gibson,
all at Christy Clark, those guys all with a with

(04:53):
a shot that contribute certainly.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
And we'll we'll hear.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
More from from Sart coming up a little bit later
on this hour. Coming up in a few minutes, we're
going to check in with Greg Tepper, managing editor at
Dave Campbells Texas Football Magazine, talk some college football and
also a preview of three A high school football across
the state of Texas.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
We did six A three weeks.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
Ago, five A preview two weeks ago, four A preview
last week in a three A preview today, a couple
other notes as well from the Olympics. In case you
did not hear, Noah Lyles did not complete the double.
He did not win the two hundred meters. He finished

(05:39):
in third place. He got the bronze. The gold medal
went to the young man from Botswana, let Cili Tobogo.
He won Botswana's first gold medal in any event ever
at the Olympic Games. Kenneth bed Narik of the US

(06:00):
got the silver and Lyles picked up the bronze. And
it wasn't long after that when Lyles did reveal to
reporters that he ran the race with COVID because he
had been diagnosed a couple of days ago. He said,
I tested positive around five o'clock in the morning on Tuesday.
And by the way, when when Lyles did these interviews

(06:28):
with reporters afterwards, he had put on an N ninety
five mask. You remember those masks? Yeah, I still have some.
I do too, I've got one. I still have one
in my bag there. Uh. And so he had an
N ninety five mask on in what's called this is
always funny. I first heard about this when I was
doing World Cup Soucker. It's called the mixed zone. They

(06:54):
they do it in the area where he had press
conferences and interviews are called zones, and you have it
on your credential what zones that you are credentialed to
be in locker room or on field or.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
This or that.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
And they've gone to that, by the way, in the
College World Series, and they've gone to that in the
College Football Playoff. I had that last year with the
Sugar Bowl about the zones where you had where you
were admitted to be the mixed zone, and I remember
that going all the way back into the nineties doing
soccer is where they did the interview in the media

(07:30):
mixed zone and he was wearing an N ninety five mask.

Speaker 2 (07:33):
Lyle said. He said, I woke up in the.

Speaker 1 (07:35):
Middle of the night just feeling really chills, aching, sore throat,
and those were kind of a lot of the symptoms
I've always had right before getting COVID, and I was
just like, I need to test this one. So the
moment the test came back in case you're wondering about
some of the particulars and said, okay, So the dude
ran a race.

Speaker 2 (07:53):
With COVID.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
What about the people around them, what about the Olympic village,
what about his group? Well, here's some of the details
about what happened. Once he tested positive. He said he
packed up, he left the Olympic village. He was quarantined
at a nearby hotel. He also said he was administered
whatever medications he could legally take without causing problems in

(08:18):
post race drug testing. So there's certain ones. Pax Loavid
is one of the ones you can take, and that's
one of the ones that's supposed to help with the
symptoms and stuff.

Speaker 2 (08:30):
The one that's it's not covid, it's packed Slova. That's
just a commercial with the lady there.

Speaker 1 (08:34):
It's funny they've been they've been on NonStop during these
Olympias because they have So Noah Lele saw the ladies
tender going well, it's covid, it's packs Loavid, and.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
So he took pack Slovid. Uh.

Speaker 1 (08:49):
He said, I still wanted to run. They said it
was still possible. So we just stayed away from everybody
and just tried to take it round by round. And
to be honest, I knew if I wanted to come
out here and win, I had to get everything I
had from the get go. I didn't have any time
to save energy. He added that he tried to keep
his diagnosis as close to his chest as possible. Interesting

(09:10):
choice of words for several reasons, he said, One, we
didn't want everybody to go into a panic. We wanted
them to be able to compete, and then two, we
wanted to be able to make it as discreet as possible.
And you never want to tell your competitors are sick.
Why would you give them an edge over you. So
he did say he's not sure if he'll participate in
the four by one hundred meter relay that takes place

(09:36):
tomorrow tomorrow afternoon, but he said the Americans do have
the speed to run the race without him.

Speaker 2 (09:41):
If he can't go, he said, I'll talk to the coaches.

Speaker 1 (09:43):
I'm going to be very honest and transparent with them,
and I'm going to let them make the decision. I
believe that no matter what happens, I believe that this
four by one team they can handle anything and everything.
I've been with them in practice and they're more than
capable to come out with a win and even break
as many records as they take their mind too, So
there it is.

Speaker 2 (10:04):
It's interesting, all right.

Speaker 1 (10:05):
Coming up, we're gonna visit with Greg Tapper, managing editor
of Dave Campbell Texas Football Magazine. When we continue on
