Speaker 2 (00:21):
You know, when people say that one of the things
they look forward to most in the Olympics is the
men's basketball team because they look forward to winning gold
and all that kind of stuff, I think what is
probably even better, Well it's kind of hard to say
(00:41):
better than winning gold, but right up there with it
is seeing the greatness of these guys once they're challenged,
if they do indeed respond, In my goodness, have they responded?
Down fifteen in the second half, down I think twelve
in the fourth core they've come back with an amazing,
(01:03):
furious run fueled by really four guys. Steph Curry started it,
and of late he's come up with a couple of
big big shots, a three pointer to put him in
front and then an old fashion three point play. But
Kevin Durant, Lebron James and Joel Embiid, and watching those
guys right now clamp down on defense, get rebounds and
(01:23):
then get it out on the break and getting both
old fashion three point plays and knocking down threes. It's
been amazing to watch. They were down eighty four to
seventy two, and right now Team USA is on a
nineteen to two run and they're up five of a
minute forty to go, with Steph Curry having just knock
(01:47):
down a shot off transition afterwards. So this is the
Team USA everybody talked about. And they just forced a
turnover as well. So it looks like and Kevin Durant
had a lot to do with that. Looks like they're
going to survive. It looks like it's not going to
be easy, but it looks like fun when you see
(02:09):
that again, when you see those guys, some of the
best players in the world really dial in. And I
know the Cynics would say, well, why can't you do
that for forty minutes? Why can't you do that for
thirty minutes? And sometimes you can, sometimes you can't, but
to see them do it down the stretch makes a
huge difference. And right now they've got the ball of
a five point lead with ninety two seconds to go.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
It's it's why we love sports, right and especially the Olympics,
is because you know, these athletes aren't really getting paid,
They're not going to get paid win or loss. They're
doing this for free. They're doing this because they care.
And you know, we kind of saw it, at least
I saw it with the men's golf competition, where it's
kind of been laughed at in the past about you know,
golf in the Olympics, and you know, we've had comments
of guys from guys like Roy mclroy who at first
(02:54):
didn't care about it, thought it was a joke. But
then you watch it on Sunday in the back nine
and you see these players a living and dying with
every shot. You see Scotty Scheffler up on the podium
crying during the national anthem. These guys care and they
love it, and it's so competitive, and especially with basketball,
you're seeing Katie and Curry and Steph and they're just
screaming after every play that they're living and dying, jumping
(03:16):
for loose balls, boxing out, all this type of stuff
that you just love to see because they aren't getting
a fact check.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
When this game ends, each American, by the way it
was revealed, it wins a gold medal, gets thirty eight
thousand hours, thirty eight thousand dollars. Lebron spent that this
morning at breakfast, right, did is that even enough for
Scheffler to paces Caddy thirty eight grand off of that?
By the way, Lebron missed the three that really would
(03:44):
have put distance between themselves. And now Serbia is trying
to make a late push here under a minute to
go with a three point play opportunity with a foul
and m beat on a bucket.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
So there's fifty six as so.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
It's not done yet, but it was quite the turnaround
from a couple of long worn football players. Baron Serell,
a long worn defense man. First thing he had to
talk about yesterday. If you were listening to the program,
you heard Jayon Blue talk about his pickleball game. And
you know, as Cameron mentioned, today is National Pickuball Day,
and Jayden said, I played three games. I didn't lose
(04:19):
any games. The rest of the guys may not be
quite as convinced of that, including Baron Serell, who was
asked about Blues pickleball game.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
Yeah, man, he could play man. I know, I don't
want to blow too much smoke up him, but he
could play. Man is a very confident person and everything
you do, and that's a good thing. But yeah, he
won a couple of games in pickleball.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
I say that it's about as much credit as he
was going to be willing to give him off of that.
Kevin Duran, by the way, just hit a huge jumper
to put the Americans back up by four with half
a minute to go after a three point play pulled
Serbia to within two, and then Nikola Yokich coming right
back with a bucket. So this is going to the
(05:03):
final seconds with the US holding on to a two
point lead right now, with twenty seconds to go in
the game, ninety three to ninety one on top of Serbia,
and there's about three seconds difference between the game and
the shot clock right now, and they're going to put
the ball in the hands certainly of Curry, but Serbia
is willing to play it out. And then Steph just
(05:27):
flung up a shot, but they called a foul ahead
of it. The shot went through, but it didn't count.
But there's eight seconds left and Steph can hit both
free throws. It puts them up for and would probably
lock it away all right. More from Baron Surrell talking
about asked about Trey Moore, who's transferred into the program
and is figuring in to be a big part of
this defensive front.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
Just as willingness to work. Every day, he finds something
to get better at, and since he got here, he's
just been improving itself. And I'm excited to see what
he does this year.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
Okay, so what's the biggest adjustment for these freshmen that
are being asked to contribute to, uh, you know, coming
in to the college game, the youngsters that they have
on here.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
The biggest thing is, obviously with college, the game just
moves a lot faster in high school, especially the competition
as well. Just in high school, you could do a
lot of different things that you really might not have
the time and uh time to do in college, just
because of the time and of the game. So I
just tell Colin and all of the young guys just
to focus on their eyes and just get used to
the speed of the game.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
By the way, if you didn't know, Baronsrel's nickname is freak,
So the questions a natural why does his teammates call
him freak?
Speaker 3 (06:37):
I guess just shout out to coach Bectam putting in
a lot of work with him and h I mean
just a lot of the work. I put in on
my own, just honing my craft at my speed, and
then in the weight room as well. I guess those
things are paid off. And no, they don't know.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
Does Sorel have some specific goals for this coming season.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
Honestly, for me, it's just winning the national Champleadership. I
mean that's my main thing, and I know if I
obviously contribute to that, I know that everything individually I'll
achieve as well.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
Okay. And then finally, there was a lot of the
conversation about the hunger that this football team still has
coming off the loss in the Sugar Bowl to Washington
last year, and how would he describe that feeling of
hunger in the locker room.
Speaker 3 (07:27):
It's the day to day thing. I mean, you don't
just wake up one day and say you're hungry for it.
You got to prove it every single day. I mean,
there's only one team out of the whole country that
is going to be able to stand up on that
stage at the end of the year. And it takes
every day to find things to get better at, being
attentive and meetings, being intentive in practice, and just using
those things to fill that hunger so then you can
(07:47):
be a national champion at the end of the year.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
Okay, so there it is. We'll hear more tomorrow from
barns Reel. Speaking of the hunger, the US did survive it.
They do win five ninety one after trailing by twelve
in the fourth quarter, trailing by fifteen in the second half,
they were down eleven. At the half they were down fifteen,
(08:10):
and the third they were down twelve. In the fourth quarter,
rallied back. Steph Curry led the amazing charge for Team USA.
I believe, what do you have? Thirty four points?
Speaker 3 (08:20):
Cam?
Speaker 2 (08:21):
I believe he.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
At thirty four in a game, but well, thirty six
points twelve to nineteen, shooting nine to fourteen from three.
He was big.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
Kevin Durant, who did not score in the first half,
was also a big factor in that fourth quarter.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
Huge defensively and offensively. A massive fourth quarter for Katie,
for Steph, for Lebron.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
And and Embiid and MBI who really I think answered
some critics the other day he was getting Charles Barkley
was kind of diving into him.
Speaker 1 (08:48):
Yeah. His first three games in pool play weren't great,
but his last two games, including this one, stepped up
big time. Especially against jokicch who he's taken a lot
of crap for the past two seasons when he's played
against Yo Kitchen, what Yokich has done to him on
both sides of the floor. So a huge game for Mbeed. Yeah,
(09:09):
he went right at Jokic down the stretch.
Speaker 2 (09:12):
So team USA survives, they win it ninety five ninety one.
They're going to play France. And what is that two
o'clock in the afternoon looks like on Sunday to thirty
hour time too, thirty hour time at the nine to
thirty Paris time Sunday night or Saturday night.
Speaker 3 (09:35):
Excuse me.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
For the gold medal Saturday night, the bronze will be
four o'clock in the morning our time, so you can
sleep through that. I don't worry about that. Serbia and
Germany there the Women's Olympic Volleyball final is at six
o'clock Saturday morning, and that's for the gold medal game.
But the US with a huge rally to come from
(09:56):
behind and win ninety five ninety one over Serbia. They
will play France for the gold medal on Saturday night.
We'll be back to wrap a hour number two on
s port Ratio AM thirteen under the zone
