Speaker 1 (00:00):
So this is pump It by the Black Eyed Peas, right,
all right, I knew it was black Eyepies.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
I'm trying to remember the name of Okay, it's pump Out. Okay.

Speaker 1 (00:07):
The reason why I say that is when my daughter,
because do you know what, can you tell me what
year that is?

Speaker 2 (00:17):
That? That that that tune?

Speaker 1 (00:19):
I want to say two thousand and three, But let
me look, that would make perfect sense if that were
the case, If if it were indeed two thousand and three,
or even two thousand and four, two thousand and five,
even two thousand and five makes sense.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
My oldest daughter would have been fourteen.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
At the time, and she wanted a.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
A stereo except for Christmas, you know, you know, and uh,
what are those things again? Yeah?

Speaker 1 (00:54):
We played CDs and stuff, right yeah, back in the day,
you know.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
And and so that's what she got for Christmas.

Speaker 1 (01:01):
Threw a lot of CDs out while moving my mom,
did you really a lot of them?

Speaker 2 (01:06):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (01:07):
So she got that and the first song I remember
her playing was that one, and she was blasting it
up in her room.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
It's a good song. It's a good song to start with.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
She was, she was rocking that all right here We're
on a Friday afternoon, and the Logward football team, as
we mentioned, will be in the stadium tomorrow morning for
a close scrimmage.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
One of the questions obviously going into.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
The season or into the fall camp training camp workouts
surrounded the tight end position, what would JT. Sanders having
moved on. So Gunner Helm, of course, is kind of
the heir apparent. He's kind of the returning experience from

(02:03):
a Loghorn perspective, veteran there.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
And yet here.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
It is pretty interesting today, just earlier today the preseason.
Another one of these preseason award watch lists has come out,
like the Remington Award watch list also was released this morning,
and Jake Major's is.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
On that list.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
It's for the nation's best center, and so Quinn Ewers
is on like a couple earlier lists like for the
Water Camp and some of the Davey O'Brien.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
Both CJ.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
Baxter and Jayden Blue were on the Doak Walker Award
watch list very early and of course it will now
at least this year no longer apply to C. Jason's
he had the knee injury and is having to have
surgery and is out for all the year. But these
watch lists continue to come out, and one of those
today was the John mackew Award. The Friends of John

(03:00):
Mackey releasing the twenty twenty four John Mackey Award preseason
watch list. This is for the nation's best tight end. Now,
this is just the preseason total. And there's I'm gonna
I'm gonna tell you one, two, three, four, five, sixty
seven eight nime in load. It looks like there's fifty

(03:23):
on the list. And on this list, uh, you have
like say Jalen Conyers of Texas tech R J Maryland
of SMU from South Lake Carrol and the son of
former Cowboy Russell Maryland, is on that preseason Award watch list.
Oscar Cardinis from UTSA is on that list. Oscar Delp

(03:46):
of Georgia, Mason Taylor of l s U came preestcorn
of Ole Miss Donovan Green of Texas A and M.
Georgia has two players on it because Benja your Second
is also on A. Texas has one player. It's a
mari Ny Black, the Alabama transfer, and so night Black

(04:07):
is expected to deliver big things for Texas, but Gunner
Heilm really kind of is the start. Nevertheless, Helm had
a ready response when he was asked about the versatility
within the tight end group.

Speaker 3 (04:20):
Absolutely, yeah, we were not just one phase for sure,
that's for sure. You know, whether it's the age of
the white position. We can all run routes, we can
all catch balls, and we can all block.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
Okay, and all would mean Jan Davis the senior from
everman we're being at, Jordan Washing's a freshman and of
course a Mari ny Black.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
So uh, he was asked Gunnerhilm was what Ny Black
can bring to.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
The team just being our team like Alabama in that program.
You know, he's brought some leadership along as well. You
know he's brought some chemistry.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (04:53):
We all have great chemistry in that room.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
You know, whether I'm on the field with Wan or
Amar or whoever it may be, we can talk to
each other.

Speaker 4 (05:03):
We know exactly what's going on with each other.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
So yeah, and so furthermore, what does Amari Ny Black present?
What can he bring to this football team to really
help lead them?

Speaker 4 (05:14):
I wouldn't say necessarily. The biggest adjustment.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
He's definitely made strides in the run game though, absolutely,
you know the team run periods.

Speaker 4 (05:21):
We're all getting better every day.

Speaker 1 (05:23):
Okay, going to regular offensive questions for gunner Helm, he
was asked as anyone else stepped up his leaders, because
gunner Helm is looked as a leader of the offensive
union and of the football team, and of course the
quarterback is as well, So quinn Ewers name is going
to come up as anybody else kind of step forward.

Speaker 2 (05:40):
But then in Gunnerhilm's estimation, a lot.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
Of guys, Jade Blues, Cedric Baxter, DeAndre Moore stepped up immensely.

Speaker 4 (05:47):
Isaiya Bon's becoming more vocal, more of a leader?

Speaker 1 (05:49):
So yeah, all right, So coming off twelve and two
and guys saying they weren't satisfied with that bad taste
in the mouth, all those kind of things, what is
the biggest jump this football team has made since a
year ago.

Speaker 3 (06:06):
We've been atop of the mountain top, we know what
it takes to get there. So just establishing that culture
and building on it, I think is the biggest thing
that we've done. Just building on what we've done last year,
reloading the guys that we lost last year.

Speaker 1 (06:19):
So now we mentioned obviously the TJ. Baxter is out
with the knee injury, but Jayden Blue is one of
those guys. You see his production and what he's capable
of doing, and we saw that last year as well,
but also is the another one of those guys that
could fall into that leadership category.

Speaker 4 (06:37):
It's played a lot of football to be awesome.

Speaker 3 (06:39):
You don't let you know, minimum snap counting games last
year fool you, especially at the beginning of the year.
But you know he's been stepping up in practice and
every time he touched the ball, you feel like something
special is gonna happen.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
All right.

Speaker 1 (06:51):
You heard me mentioning that if you will, a big
three so to speak, with regard to the tight end
spot entering the training camp practices Gunner Helm, Maury, Ny Black,
Juan Davis. There's also a talented freshman named Jordan Washington
and has everybody's attention, including that of his teammate at

(07:13):
the same spot, Gunner Hilm.

Speaker 3 (07:14):
Absolutely, yeah, No, he's coming along every day. He's gonna
be like I said, I think in the spring, he's
gonna be a beast one day.

Speaker 4 (07:20):
So you know, I think that.

Speaker 3 (07:21):
If he just stays on the track that he's on,
gets his steps down, you know, continues to find up
his routes.

Speaker 4 (07:27):
He's gonna be He's gonna be.

Speaker 1 (07:28):
Of course, you know, as these as the start of
the season approaches, and of course today is August ninth,
so that means we're twenty two days away from kickoff
on August thirty. First, I think most folks know that
season opener is against Colorado State. Gunner Helm is from

(07:50):
the state of Colorado, and in fact, Colorado States was
the first team to really show interest in Gunnerhilm to
you know, showing interest in offering him a scholarship. So
he was asked for his thoughts about opening up against
the Chloro State Rams.

Speaker 4 (08:07):
They actually were, yeah, they were, They were, Yeah, it'll
be cool.

Speaker 3 (08:10):
I know a couple guys on that team, so the
home ties, I guess will be definitely cool.

Speaker 2 (08:15):
All right.

Speaker 1 (08:17):
And we talked about the quarterback, we talked about receivers,
talked about running back. How about the offensive line. There's
some chemistry that develops between the tight end and the
offensive line, especially when you line up against a right
tackle like Cam Williams, who has made.

Speaker 2 (08:32):
Such great strides.

Speaker 1 (08:33):
And you know that also was right there in the
notice of Gunner Helm.

Speaker 3 (08:38):
I mean spring obviously last year during camp, at times
during the season in practice, and obviously a couple of
starts that he had. The chemistry's there. I mean we
talk every play. It's super easy. If you know he
takes my guy, I'll go to his guy.

Speaker 4 (08:53):
It's it's it's there, all right.

Speaker 1 (08:56):
So he's excited about that. They got through the first
day of pads, he got through some workout. And now
back to that tight end spot. And you'd heard him
talking about Amari Nyblack, George Washington. What about the guy
that's made all those strides, Juan Davis, the rising senior.

Speaker 4 (09:15):
Yeah, guy that came in with me.

Speaker 3 (09:18):
Couldn't be more proud of one from day one that
him and I got here to now, from the bottom
of the depth chart to where we are now. You know,
I couldn't be more proud to be on the field
with one. Every play that I'm on the field with.

Speaker 1 (09:31):
So with all of these tight ends gunner field, there's
going to be an additional amount of two tight end
looks within the offense this year.

Speaker 3 (09:38):
We'll see whatever fits the defense we're playing best, whatever
starts fielding the most during game.

Speaker 1 (09:43):
So all right, and then finally, with regard to the
younger tight ends. What's the biggest challenge for the young
tight ends.

Speaker 3 (09:49):
I think just adapting to the speed of college football,
just learning how to play college football. You know, you're
blocking Alfred Collins in a six, I head up on
you on a you know, inside run play. So so
just things like that. Just coming from high school where
you know you might not block a lot. I think
that's the biggest leap. That was the biggest leap for me.

Speaker 1 (10:05):
So all right, So there's some thoughts from Gunner Hilm,
the Texas tight end. We'll hear from other long run players,
and we'll hear from coach Sark as well. Up next, however,
it's Friday, in conceivable? Gam Are you ready for Friday?
N in conceivable?

Speaker 2 (10:18):
I thought I was dumb with Florida for this month,
but nope, nope, you're not. We have Florida, man. That's
part of it.

Speaker 1 (10:24):
And that's next on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the
