Speaker 1 (00:00):
Update on the Olympic Women's basketball the United States. Like
I said, it was only a six point lead at
thirty five twenty nine midway through the second quarter against Nigeria.
US closed on a seventeen to four run to go
up by nineteen at the half. At fifty two thirty three,
promptly open the second half of the ten o run
and it is complete blowout. Now it is sixty five
(00:20):
thirty six with about four and a half minutes remaining
in the third quarter of the United States steamrolling into
the semifinal round in Olympic Women's basketball. Hey our man,
CB twittersn it'd sent some me. I meant to put
this in in our fast food portion of inconceivable. I've
got to do it, but I know this will interest you.
(00:41):
Cam Waterburger is celebrating it's seventy fourth birthday tomorrow. They
started in Corpus Christie in nineteen fifty and they will
celebrate their seventy fourth birthday tomorrow. So what they're going
to do is gonna roll out a brand new birthday
(01:02):
cake flavored milkshake and get it for free if you
redeem it through the app tomorrow tomorrow. Only you get
one and then by the way, more's the point. They're
asking people to go ahead and get the new shake,
take a picture of it, tag us on Instagram. They're saying,
to be entered to win your very own what a
(01:24):
party complete with their food truck. So, yeah, sounds like
the Waterburger food truck at your place. You'd be okay
with that. That'd be pretty sick, it would be. Would
imagine if you had like a graduation party or something,
you had a water Burger food truck pull up.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
Yeah, do you that'd be the talk of the town.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
Yeah, be big time there. Of course didn't have it
and still don't have it in North Carolina. Yeah, but
it's coming. Waterburger is going to spend there's there's that
we did the story conceivable were Whataburger, the Waburger here
in Texas was going after this small chain in North
Carolina in the Greater Charlotte area, just outside of so
(02:09):
you know where the town of Mount Pleasant is, Yes,
just up north there that there's a little chain called
what a Burger And it's watt hyphen capital a hyphen Burger,
so it's spelled a little bit different. And Waburger reached
an agreement with them several years ago you could use
that particular name because it had been trademarked by the
Waburger in Texas years prior, like twenty years prior to
(02:32):
this smaller group, and so they said you can use it,
but you can only use it in certain things. And
then they kind of ignored some of that in terms
of their advertising. So now they've gone after him full
blast something like that to try to get him to
stop it. So, anyway, whatburger is nationwide as we know
right now, all right, long worn football back on the
(02:53):
practice field today. In going into the workouts before the season,
before the fall camp workouts began, one of the areas
that is at the very least a curiosity and for
many a question would be the tight end spot. It
is understandable when you lose a guy like Jatavian Sanders,
(03:15):
who was a fabulous tight end. Not much of a
singer if you heard his training camp singing that he
was doing for the Carolina Panthers that we played the
other day, not so much on that, but was an
outstanding high school or outstanding high school football theyer and
then outstanding tight end for Texas. So the question is
how would the tight end position work. Well, they got
(03:39):
a mary Ny Black transferring in from Alabama. They have
seen vast and steady improvement from Juan Davis, the senior
from Everman, and then Gunner Hilm who did contribute last
year and touchdown catch against Iowa State and I had
one against Oklahoma. This is a guy that has been
solid and a steady perform so he's at the top
(04:01):
of the tight end chart. But even though he did
contribute last year, the role can change, and Gunnard Helm
was asked how his role.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
This season has changed in that tight end role.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
I mentally, uh, I think I'm more fit to be
a leader this year. I kind of feel like because
my role last year, some of that leadership could could
have been left in the dark. But trying to step
trying to do my best step up this year, I
feel like that leadership role has increased immenseally and I'm
ready to go into the season being more vocal, being more.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
Of a leader.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
Okay, So with that in mind, did that change his
preparation with the possibility of the role changing with j
T sanders departure and how the leadership piece feeds into
the production piece, you.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Know, I think out of school like Texas, I think
the word replaced gets thrown around a little bit, and
I think, you.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
Know, most of the time, we don't really replace guys here,
we just reload. We got the talents reload.
Speaker 1 (04:57):
Yeah, And as a Sark light to say, we don't
replace players, we replace production. That's what they'll look for. Okay,
So does that mean he's going to have more receiving
games this year where he is in the fold and
catching the football more.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
Like I said before many times, you know, my job
on this team is to help this team win. Try
to help this team win as many game as they
can win a national championship.
Speaker 1 (05:24):
Back to that leadership thing. If you're thinking on the
offensive side about who a leader is going to be,
obviously you're going to begin with the quarterback.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
You're going to begin with Quinn Viewersh.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
And it would take his teammates probably to speak better
of it, even more so than the coaches. And Sark
even says that he said, you want to you want
to know about leaders, ask the guys on the team,
like they say that one of the real leaders of
the Long Horn Football team on the defensive side is
Leong Ali fou lefoul, even even though.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
He's in the rotation and linebackers.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
But the fact that he's a leader in the locker room, well, Cole,
you know, the way that that was laid out is
that a lot of these guys would be asked, who
is your your on field leader, your locker room leader?
And Gunnerhelm was asked about the guy most everybody expects
to be the leader on the offensive side.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
Quinn ewers, Oh, I mentally, I mean, it's night and
day da since he's got here, you know, every year
he's made strides. You know, he's got great connections with
everyone on the team, close.
Speaker 2 (06:30):
With everyone on the team.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
I feel like anyone can go to Quinn with any
problem and and Quinn would do his about the best
to try.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
To solve it.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
That's interesting there. Okay, so now back to that tight
end spot. Uh.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
This is a this was something we were talking about
the other day.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
What's become a real buzz phrase, and the phrase is
the blank room, the quarterback room, the running back room,
the wide receiver room, because we you know, coaches originally
(07:06):
talk about about the guys that are in that position
room with their position coach and they're watching the video
cutups and they're they're you know, going through what their
strategy is for practice and then in games as well.
So the tight end room, So gun our Helmets asked,
what can the tight end room bring to the party
(07:27):
this year?
Speaker 2 (07:28):
Grit? Grit?
Speaker 3 (07:30):
You know, I think we can put any tight end
out on that field and hue the buses, but to
you know.
Speaker 2 (07:38):
Do his job and do his job right. Yeah, okay,
all right.
Speaker 1 (07:42):
So if you've got grit, does that mean you also
have versatility within the tight end room?
Speaker 2 (07:47):
Absolutely? Yeah.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
We were not just one phase for sure, that's for sure.
You know, whether it's the age of the white position.
We can all run routes, we can all catch balls, and.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
We can all block.
Speaker 1 (07:57):
Okay, all right, So important to keep that in mind
now in talking about that versatility, I mentioned Amari and
I Black transferring in from Alabama, and so Gunnar Hemmel's asked,
what does Amari bring to this football team into the
tight end room?
Speaker 3 (08:14):
Just being a team like Alabama in that program. You know,
he's brought some leadership along as well. You know, he's
brought some chemistry. Uh, we all have great chemistry in
that room. You know, whether I'm on the field with
Wan or Amar or whoever it may be. We can
talk to each other. Uh, we know exactly what's going
on with each other.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
So okay, all right.
Speaker 1 (08:35):
So, uh you have that and then the fact that
I Black adds another body to that room. And remember
we heard last week Jeff Banks, the tight Ends coach,
talk about how they were slow playing at first with
Amari I. Black and that they were bringing him along
(08:58):
very very slowly because of coming off injury and not
wanting to fast track at too much to where he
wouldn't be at full blast for the fall camp, the
training camp workouts, Well, they did all of that and
they've been pleased with it. And so now that no
Black's able to go full blast, gunnar Helm was asked
where has he seen Amari make the biggest adjustment to
(09:21):
being in this program coming from Alabama.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
I want to say, necessarily the biggest adjustment.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
He's definitely made.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
Strides of the run game though absolutely, you know, the
team run periods.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
We're all getting better every day.
Speaker 1 (09:33):
All right, So there's some thoughts from gunner Helm on that.
All right, they've reached the end of the third quarter
and Team USA in complete command. That the women's basketball quarterfinal.
They're up by twenty eight. They've led by as many
as I believe thirty one, certainly at least by thirty.
NIGERI got a bucket right before the buzzer, but it's
seventy six, forty eight, and again, this was a thirty
(09:55):
five to twenty nine game. Since then, they have out
scored Nigeria forty one to nineteen since then, and it's
now a complete blowout. So the US is going to
be headed for the into the semifinals coming up on Friday.
(10:20):
All Right, We've got some other topics we'll get to,
and we'll continue here before we wrap up our number
two on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone of
the iHeartRadio app.
