Speaker 1 (00:00):
We welcome you to our number two of the program
right here on Sports MEDEOAM thirteen hundred the Zone. Craig
Way alongside the producer Cameron Parker. Glad to have you
with us. Take up till five o'clock this afternoon, and
there's a lot of things to get you caught up on.
We talked, we heard some long worn football sound in
the first hour, talked about some Olympics, but let's get
you completely caught up on that and then some other
(00:22):
items as well. First of all, at the Olympics this morning,
no real difficulty for Team USA for in their women's
basketball semifinal win over Australia. They won by twenty one.
They won eighty five sixty four. It was closed to
thenk end of the first quartering and then they just
(00:44):
kind of blew it open after that. But here's some
numbers that were pretty impressive about this, the way that
they shared the basketball. Brian Winworth wrote a nice piece
about it and then read something else about it also
on the Athletic Brianna Stewart had at sixteen points. She
(01:05):
was six and twelve from the floor, six rebounds, five assists.
Asia Wilson had ten points, eight rebounds. Jackie Young had
fourteen points, Kalia Copper had eleven off the bench. But
here's the number that really stands out. The Americans assisted
on twenty seven of their first twenty eight baskets, and
(01:28):
Brian Winner said, that's a number that's hard to fathom
unless you see how Team USA cuts and screens. So
they do that, and in their five games so far
at the Olympics, the Americans have assisted on one hundred
and fifty five of one hundred and seventy three may baskets.
They're averaging thirty one assists per game. And so they've
(01:48):
you know, cruising. They were up by thirty in the
fourth quarter and then they just kind of cruised in
from there. So the Americans are headed for the gold
medal game. They one handily and now they'll play for
their eighth straight gold medal on Sunday. I don't know
(02:10):
about you. That seems to be more of a sure
thing to me than the men. Yeah. I think it's yeah,
good take. I agree. I think it's kind of That's
why no one's believe in discussing. It's because they know
that they're gonna win gold. And it's why the whole
Caitlyn Clark thing was very interesting. I know she's probably
the most popular player on the planet, but the outcry
(02:31):
over her not making the team was a little bit
overblown by some talking head too definitely had no idea
what they were talking about. In terms of Team USA
women's basketball. Here's the bottom line on that. And I
can understand folks who thought she should have been on
the team, and I also understand Team USA's perspective on
(02:52):
why she was not on the team. However you feel
about that, what we've seen in the Olympics really wasn't
going to be changed or altered in any way whether
she was on the team or not. Team USA was
going to throttle everybody, and what they've done is throttle everybody.
(03:13):
So you know, whether she deserved it, should have been
on it. Folks can debate that all day long. Got
no problem with that, understand it, and I see both sides.
But it wasn't going to change what was going to
happen on the floor. And they went on and handled
their business, and I think they'll handle their business on Sunday.
(03:33):
Speaking of handling their business, Track and Field did it
as well on one four by one hundred, but not
the other. First of all the women winning gold should
Carrie Richardson, who had lost in her earlier race to
(03:55):
the Longhorn. Julian offered Alfred came through with her four
by one hundred team UH, and she was the anchor
leg and kind of had to bring it home. It
was a little come from behind. And remember she won
the hundred in the she won silver in the one
hundred to Julian Alfred, but she got the baton from
(04:18):
Gabby Thomas in in third place, and by the halfway
point of her leg she blown past the runners from
Great Britain in Germany and Uh and then just finished
it all forty one point seven eight seconds, good for
a point oh seven second win seven to one hundreds
of a second over Great Britain. So and in Great
(04:39):
Britain also kind of it was raining, so in Great
Britain also kind of struggled in a couple of botonics
changes and that brings us to the American men in
the four by one hundred. So Canada ended up winning
(05:04):
the four by one hundred meter relay because the US
botched a change over and got disqualified. So it was
really weird. Christian Coleman gave the Americans a good start,
but he collided with Kenny bet Narik at the first
(05:25):
handover and they recovered to finish well down the field,
but they were disqualified anyway as the exchange was illegal.
And since nineteen ninety five and the Olympics and the
World Championships, the US has now dropped eleven batons. They've
had eleven drop batons or had disqualifications or bands. They've
(05:46):
just struggled with that one, with that one particular event.
So that was bizarre the way that that worked out,
But there it is. And also the of course, the
American men's basketball team will play tomorrow afternoon's two thirty
(06:07):
in their game against France. Tomorrow afternoon will be the
Olympic gold medal game. There, Okay, I wanted to mention
something else, and I'll tell you what I'm gonna We'll
take a break and the comeback. It's gonna take a
little bit of time to set up. I will tell
you this. We were talking about Jerry Jones not getting
(06:28):
the contract thing done yet with Ceedee Lamb, and of
course he hasn't done it with Dak Prescott yet either.
Dak held out of today's light practice because of ankle soreness.
And remember they had the joint practice with the Rams
yesterday and they're playing the Rams on Sunday. Team called
(06:48):
it precautionary reasons, said it's not serious. Prescott wasn't going
to play anyway on Sunday. I can play it all
this preseason what it sounds like. Yeah, yeah, And since
Arthur became the coach in twenty twenty, Dak hasn't played
in any preseason game, so hasn't heard him. He's nope,
played very well in the regular season. Yeah, exactly. So anyway,
(07:10):
he was held out of practice today and he and
the Cowboys finishing their preparations before they will take on
the Rams at Sofi Stadium on Sunday afternoon. All right,
coming up, we'll update you, Like I said on the
PGA leaderboard, because he's got a long worm flavor and
(07:30):
it also has another story that I feel compelled to discuss,
and we're going to hear from more long worn football
players as well. It's a Friday afternoon. Glad to have
you with us here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under
the Zone in the iHeart Radio app.
