Speaker 1 (00:09):
Good Monday afternoon to you.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
I know what you're saying, but what's so good about it? Right?
Speaker 1 (00:15):
Depending on your specific fandom, I suppose, but we try
to help you get through Monday. Hope it's going well
before you get afternoon. Welcome to the program here on
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred of the Zone, here on
a long orange Monday. My name is Craig Way. I
do thank you very much for joining us. We are
with you each and every weekday afternoon Monday through Friday,
(00:36):
from two to five.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
We of course includes the producer Jay Carman, who.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
Got to call bastrots By District win on Friday night,
but then witnessed his Washington commanders lose. What is it
now five in a row for them? How many of
they loved? They weren't take three and two and now
they're three and seven. I think something like that.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
You know, it's not great when you have a losing
streak like this, and you can count the number of
defensive stops on the losing streak on one hand. Coming
into a game in Madrid, so yeah, the the uh
Spanish crowd got to watch the commander's fourth option at
punt returner Mikey Sain was still muffed the punt that
(01:20):
ultimately sort of amendsm in Miami's favorite wow.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
And led to their victory. So I'm count one, two, three, four, five,
six straight loss. Now, so they were three and two,
they were three and two.
Speaker 4 (01:32):
It all changed against the Bears.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
It's weird. Yeah, at one point loss they were three
and two. The Rams were three and two, and the
commanders of lost six and r and the Rams one
to six in a right now to get or five
in a row, five in a row to get date.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
Weird.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
It's weird how quickly can change and how it can
spiral quickly. But that tonight the Dallas Cowboys uh trying
desperately to hang around the periphery of the playoff picture,
if you will. They play the Las Vegas Raiders tonight
In Vegas. Cowboys are three five and one. Raiders are
(02:09):
two and seven. You can hear that contest on ninety
point one fmk vet coming away this evening and we'll
have the Manning cast going on for that tonight that'll
be going on. I was talking with my wife and
should tell you how far she has come as a
(02:30):
sports fan, and she's not a huge Cowboys fan. She
grew up in Dallas and so she's she was kind of,
you know, kind of a Cowboys fan because her family was,
and we were when we were dating the first time
back in the early eighties. I took her a couple
of Cowboy games when she was like seventeen eighteen and she.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
Was kindingh Yeah, it was okay.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
And then just kind of, you know, after we split
up first time, and like I said, I didn't run
into her after she and she came to my wedding
the first wedding of my first wife, who passed away
nine years ago. But then my first wife and I
went to her wedding like in ninety four, and then
I didn't see her for thirty two years. I guess
(03:14):
it was I did not run it thirty four years.
I guess I didn't run into her until he had
twenty eighteen, So I guess it's been thirty four years
and when we randomly ran.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
In each other. But anyway, she.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
By then was not much at all of a sports
fan of any kind. So since then she's like become
I've proselytized her in becoming a Dodger fan, and so
it's been good for her, she's known nothing but playoffs
ever since she's been around it. She doesn't know what
the suffering was like for a lot of time for
the Dodgers and for their fans. So she's really enjoying
(03:48):
the ride on that she's I wouldn't say she's a
full on, all in rams fan like me, but she
knows that I'm really into it, and so she watches
and she's happy when they win, and she has some
gear and stuff like that, and I think she probably
now is more of a Rampson than the Cowboys fan,
but she does keep up with the Cowboys. But this
(04:08):
is this tells you how much of a fan she is.
I mentioned to her that tonight I was more in
favor of watching ken Burn's new series, The American Revolution.
It started last night and I DVRD it because we
were out to dinner after the women's basketball game, and
(04:30):
she said, oh, I thought we were going to watch
the Manning cast, saying this to me.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
There's a part of you that goes, well, isn't this
some kind of progress?
Speaker 2 (04:39):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (04:40):
Right? So I said, you're right, So we're going to
watch the Cowboys? All right? Yeah, we're gonna we'll watch it.
Tonight and for no other reason to be entertained by
Peyton and Eli. And I'm kind of curious to see,
you know, as you know, they have like during the
course of a telecast, they may have three guests. One
can be a pop star, or it can be a
(05:01):
or it can be a player who's really hot, and
then there's two guests, one that has a rooting interest
for either side. So I'm kind of curious to see who.
You know, maybe it's Post Malone. I don't know post
Malone is. It was announcement the weekend it's going to
perform at halftime the Thanksgiving Day game.
Speaker 4 (05:19):
All right, do you want you want the list?
Speaker 1 (05:20):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (05:20):
Do you want a surprise?
Speaker 3 (05:21):
No?
Speaker 4 (05:21):
No, no, no, tell me last number one?
Speaker 2 (05:24):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (05:24):
Former President George W. Bush.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
Okay, that's the cowboy fan part of it. Then the
raider part Derek Carr.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
Okay, that makes sense too.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
And then the wild card guest, Yeah, is none other
than the mayor of Flavortown, Guy Fieri.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Okay, Well there you go. Okay, uh, that makes sense.
Speaker 4 (05:43):
Those three in a room.
Speaker 1 (05:45):
Okay, yeah, not all at the same time for it,
So anyway, so that's what we're gonna do.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Tonight.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
But let me tell you, let me tell you what
the day holds in store for this program. Uh, this
is a long Orange Monday, so we're gonna hear from
long ONRN say coach Steve Sarkisian from the weekly news
conference talking about the loss to Georgia and trying to
get it turned back around. Two games remain in the
regular season. Fortunately both are at home. You know that
that whole month of October being out still just kind
(06:13):
of hangs over me like a cloud from time, even
though they've had a home game since then and an
open date, but then went back on the road again
to Atlanta. Part of that is because I'll say this
as nice as I can, this has been a really
difficult season for me in terms of travel. It has
(06:36):
been the most difficult. Every road game this year other
than Oklahoma and Texas is the designated home team, but
every flight trip this year has had some sort of
a problem or issue, every single one. And we've had
(06:57):
that again over the weekend anyway. So it's so I
kind of feel the effects on that a little bit.
But Uh, there's two home games remaining and that's a
good thing. This this Saturday against the Arkansas Razorbacks, and
then of course the Black Friday game against Texas A
and m UH and to close out the regular season.
(07:19):
What does this all mean for the Long Horns in
terms of the postseason. I'll let's start and do most
of the talking about that, because he's going to pretty
much tell you that a lot of it is just
you know, in coming on what they do these last
two games of the regular season.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
He said that to us on the post game show
on Saturday night.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
I will, however, a little later on tell you what
I think is the most plausible bowl season projection for
Texas outside postseason projection, outside of if they don't get
(08:00):
into the College Football Plaoff. We know now they're not
going to get into the SEC Championship game, right, but
they still have an outside shot at the CFP at
the College Football Playoff. But we'll learn more about that.
I've got some projected fields for that that we'll get
to and uh and obviously tomorrow night will be the
updated College Football Playoff rankings. Hunter your check is now
(08:22):
the interim guy since last week mac Rode stepped down
as the chairman of the committee. So ironic, he's the
athletic director of the school that comes here to town
this week, Arkansas. So I'm sure he'll be here on Saturday,
you know, so get to see.
Speaker 4 (08:39):
The Longhorns up close. Yeah, right, doesn't Well, does he
have to recuse himself in that case?
Speaker 1 (08:44):
No, no, no, no, it mean me at the game, representing
his school in the in the meetings. He doesn't have
to recuse himself from from any discussion about Texas. Right,
he would if it was Arkansas. But we know Arkansas
that's not an issue. They won't be in the playoff,
So in Texas is right now on the outside of that.
But there are some things that could happen. So we'll go,
(09:07):
we'll run down all of that. There's something else I
want to get to today. Long worn men's basketball one
on Saturday over Kansas City was not very pretty on that.
In fact, uh, Sean Sean Miller talked about that, And
tomorrow we're gonna hear from coach Miller talking about the
team because tomorrow night the Longhorns play Writer. You don't know,
(09:28):
we're Writer Colleges. That's Trenton, New Jersey. I think it's uh,
and it's in New Jersey.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
I know that. I was thinking it was.
Speaker 4 (09:36):
Trent Why am I thinking Lawrenceville.
Speaker 1 (09:39):
That's a suburb of Trenton, So that's where is That
was a weird memory moment.
Speaker 5 (09:44):
Nice.
Speaker 1 (09:45):
Nice, that's a suburb of Trenton. So writer comes in
here tomorrow night. It's an eight o'clock game tomorrow. I. Uh,
we've got tickets we're gonna give away, and we're gonna
do it on the talkback feature, and uh, while we
have them, we have several pairs. While we have them,
they're yours for the asking. You don't have to answer
(10:06):
a trivia question. You don't have to do standing on
your head or anything like that, but you do have
to use the talkback microphone, our talkback feature from iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
And the way you do that.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
Is, if you don't already have the talkback, if you
don't already have the iHeart Radio app, download it on
your smartphone. Do that. It's really easy. It's free. You
just download it. Then you do a search for AM
thirteen under the zone. It'll pop right up. And when
it pops up, then you'll see a couple of buttons.
One's a little white triangular button that's to listen to
(10:40):
what's going on in the air, but for your purposes
for this there's a red button with a white microphone.
You tap that button that activates the talkback feature the
talkback microphone. You can leave us a message up to
thirty seconds, doesn't have to be that long, even five seconds. Hey,
this is Bob Smith and I'd like two tickets to
the game tomorrow night.
Speaker 2 (10:59):
Please. That'd be enough, you know? So? Uh? And then
are they supposed to give us their.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
I think I think we just did your name name
because the number I think comes when you make you
sign up for the iHeart app.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
Gotcha? Okay, So that's all you have to do.
Speaker 1 (11:15):
While we have them, and we have several pairs, we'll
give them away in order to those who access us
pair of tickets for long worn basketball in the morning.
All you have to do again download the iHeartRadio app
if you haven't already done it. Then I use the
the Then you'll do the search for AM thirteen under
the zone. When it pops up, hit the little red
(11:35):
button with a white microphone. There the talkback microphone or
talkback feature, and say, hey, I'd like a pair of
tickets to that game in our tomorrow night.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
My name is you know whatever? That's it.
Speaker 1 (11:45):
And while we have them, if you do that, get
in the queue for that, you'll you'll get a pair.
Speaker 2 (11:50):
It's that simple.
Speaker 1 (11:51):
All right, up neck, we're gonna hear from long One's
head coach Teve Sarkisian. I want to continue on thirteen
under the zone as long as you can see. No,
it is not yacht rock Wednesday, where Gordon Lightfoot would
(12:12):
certainly hold his place. The late great Gordon Lightfoot was
born eighty seven years ago today today would have been
on his birth by the way, today Sean Miller's birthday today,
Sean was obviously nine eighty seven. Gordon Lightfoot passed away
a couple of years ago, but a little over like
(12:33):
two and a half years ago. He was eighty four
at the age at the age of eighty four when
he passed away. But he was a great, great singer,
songwriter and yeah, a good chunk. His catalog is classified
in the yacht rock thing, but he was also just
looked at as being adult contemporary rock. One of the
greatest musicians of all time to come from Canada. And
we'll have a couple other samplings of his catalog throughout
(12:54):
the course of the day. All right, and that was
really big hit is if you could read my mind
that he did in the early seventies. There, okay, wanted
to get to a long Worn Head coach Steve Sarkeesian's
weekly press coming. Before I did that, there were a
couple of I also wanted to make sure that, as always,
(13:19):
even though we're giving away the tickets through a talkback
microphone to Long Worn men's basketball, if you just want
to text the program give us your thoughts. You need
to get some off your chests. It's okay, I understand that.
Feel free to text us. You can text the program.
You text the word texas followed by your question or
comment to eight one five three zero. So you text
(13:42):
the program by texting texas to eight one five three zero.
Standard messaging and data rates may apply. Now I'll get
to I'll get to a text right away. Was asking
a question about my alma mater, which I'll get to
in a moment. But somebody said a couple of responses
(14:04):
here from this morning. Somebody said it's too late. The
seasons over the long ones had to work cut out
for themselves, and they cut and ran.
Speaker 2 (14:14):
Well, they didn't give up.
Speaker 1 (14:16):
They didn't cut and ram, but they did make mistakes
and that cost them the game.
Speaker 2 (14:21):
Seasons not over.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
You got two games left in the regular season and
then something will happen in the postseason. But I guess
in the minds of many for whom that it's either
playoff or bust. Maybe it may be like that. I
understand that if you feel that way, there's somebody else
a soft living is killing the long Horns, say forty
million dollar budget, luxurious facilities, in ile money, tutors, escorts.
(14:43):
Maybe if I'll ever take it away, we might see
something different. If you took all that away, you wouldn't
have any players coming in. It's just the way of
the world now in college football. And if you think
that isn't the case at Georgia or Alabama or Ohio State,
then you'd be incorrect because they all have those same things.
(15:07):
And again we're talking about the program has been to
the playoffs in the semifinals the last two years. But
it's not all crash and burn. But I understand the
frustration on that. Here's there are several former long Worns
who have postgame shows after ut games. I don't know
about those. We had the third and Long Worn Podcast
(15:28):
group right here on the station. The consensus among these
players is if I Sark was out coached by Kirby,
I didn't hear that on our podcast.
Speaker 2 (15:38):
Thing.
Speaker 1 (15:38):
Texas is a very undisciplined team when it comes to
the ongoing issues with penalties. I don't know about vary,
but they did make a lot of band that's coming
up in this press conference.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
You hear that.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
And then Sart needs to hire a full time offensive coordinator.
They have other offensive coordinators that are part of the deal.
He's just if by OC you mean play caller, that's
not going to happen. He's going to continue to call
plays because he did it really, really well when he
was at Alabama, and he's done it really well at
(16:12):
other places.
Speaker 2 (16:13):
He's going to continue to do that. Just so you'll know.
Speaker 1 (16:15):
Somebody else said, did you ever think you'd see your
alma mater rank this high? And realistically should move up?
Go mean Green North Texas is in the college football rankings.
They're in the AP Top twenty five at number twenty two.
They are in the Coaches poll at number twenty three.
It's the first time they've been ranked in the top
twenty five since nineteen fifty nine a year they won
(16:38):
what was in the Missouri Valley Conference in football and
went to the Sun Bowl lost to New Mexico State
in the sun Ball. So it's the highest they've been ranked.
It's a great run for them. They have to keep
their foot on the pedal though, to try to get
into the American Conference Championship game. South Florida's lost to
Navy over the weekend really did help North Texas if
they win their last two games. They played at Rice
(17:00):
this week. If they win that game and then win
the regular season finale at home against Temple, the odds
are even with tige breaks and even with things till
being a jumble, they will host the American Conference Championship
game in Denton and then have a chance. Who knows,
they're twelve and one to get in is the highest
ranked G five school. It could be really tight between
(17:21):
them and James Madison if James Madison continues to play
well in the Sun Belt. But they have a shot.
They definitely have a shot. Okay, let's go to Long
Worn's head coach Steve Sarkigian. We'll hear from sark first
of all, his opening thoughts, opening statement from today's press conference.
Speaker 6 (17:36):
A lot of the things I felt like I saw
to be true in the game felt like they held
true when I watched the tape. You know, you look
at at the end of the third quarter and it's
fourteen to ten. You're looking out about a really very
even ballgame. You know, from a yardist standpoint third down conversions,
(17:57):
you know, both teams had a turnover. Was very kind
of hard fought game. It's exactly what we thought it
would be. You know. Unfortunately, you know, they have the
drive to score, and on that drive, they have the
two fourth down conversions, which you know, credit to them
for you know, taking the risk for trying to convert those.
It's fortunate we didn't execute on the first fourth and one,
(18:19):
and it's unfortunate we jumped off sides on the second one.
You know, that's on us. We've got to be better
in those special situations in the game. It's exactly what
we told the team today. And then coming right out
of it, you know, they hit us with the surprise
on sidekick, and so when you really look at the
gravity of from fourteen to ten to thirty five to ten,
(18:42):
they scored twenty one points.
Speaker 7 (18:43):
We ran three plays on offense.
Speaker 6 (18:45):
And so you know, there's a lot of ways to
look at the game and what happened and what we
could have done differently and or better. But if you
really just take a snapshot of the game, that's that's
when it got away from us. And so, like I said,
credit to Georgia, they played a heck of a game,
and uh, you know, they they they they took their
risk at opportune times and and and made their plays
(19:06):
and we didn't. So I think I think the thing
for us right now is we got to refocus. We've
got a great opportunity here the last two weeks of
the season and and see what happens. And that that
first opportunity is this Saturday at home at dk R.
Speaker 7 (19:19):
It's great to be back again.
Speaker 6 (19:21):
You know, we've only had the one home game here
that started November for about a month and a half,
so to be back home against a long standing rival
in Arkansas is something I know our players are excited about.
And then the idea is, you know, everyone's want to
talk about all of the other stuff surrounding the team
and the season and what might and this might. Our
focus is on what we can control and what we
(19:42):
can control is our preparation and our play this Saturday.
I guess a very very dangerous Arkansas team. That the
record is not indicative of how well these guys have
been playing. Uh, they've played four road games. They've lost
by a combined eleven points on the road. Most recently
they lose twenty three to twenty two at LSU, but
(20:04):
very tight ball games. That got a very explosive offense,
a great quarterback in Green, who can run it, who
can throw it, So they pose a ton of challenges
for us. They've got a you know, top fifteen NFL
draft pick defensive end. So this is a very talented team,
well coached. Coach Petrino does a heck of a job
in particular on offense and it shows.
Speaker 7 (20:23):
So we got to work cut out for us.
Speaker 6 (20:24):
But I think the good thing about our team, I
think that we've regrouped, we've refocused, and our focus is
on this game this Saturday, and it's one game at
a time. Here for the final two.
Speaker 1 (20:36):
Starts first comments. Then he was asked about the running game,
and they ran the ball pretty well on the first
series and a couple other times early on, but does
he feel the running game left some opportunities out there
on the field.
Speaker 6 (20:48):
I think this, you know, like I said, I thought
we actually ran the ball relatively effectively. It's unfortunate, you know,
Trey takes an eight yard loss on a run that
gets bottled up and he tries to spit back out
you know where it was second and five, And you know,
we were talking about that this morning as a team
and coaching them that sometimes playing third and four is
(21:10):
a heck of a lot better than playing third and fifteen.
Speaker 7 (21:12):
Ultimately we convert that.
Speaker 6 (21:15):
But when you just look at the flow of the
game and the amount of snaps in the game and
where the game went, you know, we knew we wanted
to be aggressive. We knew we wanted to attack them
down the field. I thought we took enough shots to
do that. You know, would have liked to have made
a couple more plays, but that's football. I don't think
we were prepared to abandon the run by any means.
(21:36):
But like I said, you know, it's fourteen to ten.
We felt good about the plan and running it and
throwing it and all the things, and the next thing,
you know, you look up, it's it's twenty eight to
ten and you have the ball in your minus ten
yard line with I think eight minutes to go in
the fourth quarter, and so at that point you throw
it three times, you got a punt.
Speaker 7 (21:55):
Now it's thirty five to ten.
Speaker 6 (21:56):
So there's no runs that are happening where you know,
I think we could have some opportunities, but you know,
I think at the end of the day, our execution
is going to be important this Saturday. Our belief in
what we're doing in the run game is going to
be important, and we're gonna have to negate some of
their pass rush with our ability to run the football.
Because if there's one of the real strengths of them
is you know, they they're they're playing you know, number
(22:19):
ten now at at kind of buck defensive end, and
they've got Rhodes ninety seven on this side. Those guys
can all rush the passer. So we have to negate
some of that with our ability to run the ball.
Speaker 1 (22:28):
Now, next to quench mynt Ryan Wingop, Uh, he caught
the touchdown pass. He also had a couple of crucial drops.
Speaker 3 (22:35):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (22:36):
He's had that thumb injury.
Speaker 1 (22:37):
The question was did that thumb injury affect his ability
to catch the ball and also an update not only
on him, but on Anthony Hill, who got banged up
in the game.
Speaker 6 (22:46):
No, I don't think it affected Ryan, you know. I mean,
you know, the one, the one catch on third down
the first drive.
Speaker 7 (22:54):
You know, I don't think that.
Speaker 6 (22:56):
I think he'd be the first one to tell you
that wasn't an issue on him making that play. The
other ball on the deep ball down down our sideline
towards the end zone would have been a great catch.
Speaker 7 (23:06):
You know, was unable to make it.
Speaker 6 (23:07):
But you know, he made a couple other really good
catches too, the corner route on third down, the deep
curl route on another third long. So I don't think
that that was an issue both both both Aunt and Ryan.
We're just we're making sure that they're gonna be okay.
I'm not ready to make that diagnosis on where they're
gonna be yet, but but feel optimistic about.
Speaker 2 (23:29):
It, okay.
Speaker 3 (23:30):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (23:30):
Next couple of questions about penalties is one where he's
into an exchange uh with anwar Richardson from Orange Bloods
about the penalty problems and why those have persisted.
Speaker 7 (23:42):
We're getting called for penalties. Is there any particular reason
why there's a variety of them.
Speaker 1 (23:48):
And toward that end, he was asked about what more
can be done to help fix that penalty issue.
Speaker 6 (23:55):
Well, I think that's when you got to make some
of the tough decisions, right, you know, when a player,
you know, it's it's one thing is like again, there's
a variety of penalties. What types of penalties are we getting?
And then can they be rectified? And if they can
be rectified, you know, and then they don't get rectified,
then you got to make some of those those tough decisions.
And you know, I think that's that's the thing. You know,
(24:16):
I think it's easy to throw a blanket statement out,
what's up with the penalties? Well, what are the types
of penalties? When are they occurring? How are they occurring?
You know, that's that's when you got to drill deep.
You got to you gotta look a little deeper than
just throwing a blanket over something.
Speaker 1 (24:30):
Okay, all right, there's some thoughts from Long one's head
coach Steve Sarkashan. We'll have more from Stark coming up
next hour. Second Hour here on the program on.
Speaker 2 (24:54):
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred.
Speaker 1 (24:56):
Zone Craig Wage joined by the producer Jay German who
was just asking me because somebody had asked him about
this particular number that we have to open up the
the three o'clock hour, and the name of the song
(25:18):
is Body Satva, which is spelled bo d Hi s
his a t t v A, but the Eastern philosopher
Body Satva.
Speaker 2 (25:32):
Is the name of it.
Speaker 1 (25:33):
And it's off like a countdown that Ecstasy album, which
is a fabulous album there.
Speaker 2 (25:38):
So anyway, hope that answers the question.
Speaker 3 (25:40):
Yeah, we had a YouTube comment or asking that yesterday
and the only ones I could think off the top
of my head was was our next our next Hour
song which is.
Speaker 1 (25:49):
Joel Yeah, that's not our style off of the storm
Front album is that one, And of course we open
up the show with him and it's Front, which is
you know, from the who off of that.
Speaker 3 (26:03):
So anyway, I wrote it down right below my top
twenty five that I ranked for fun this morning, so
that now I'll remember it.
Speaker 1 (26:11):
Okay, okay, well done. All right, let's hear from the
head coach of the Houston Texans. Texans come back and
they beat the Tennessee Titans on a walk off field
go They went at sixteen thirteen and so let's hear
from Dimiko rons because his team which started oh to
three and I think one in four, now one and four,
(26:31):
but now they they got the two and three, then
dropped the two and four. Now they are uh and
then I think what they got the three and four?
Then it's three and five and then bounce them back
and now they're five and five.
Speaker 3 (26:45):
Yeah, three and five after letting one get away against
the Broncos.
Speaker 1 (26:48):
That's right, that's right. You know what that loss is aging?
Well when you look.
Speaker 3 (26:52):
At Denver, now, yeah, Denver, Denver's finding ways to win.
Speaker 4 (26:56):
I mean, it hadn't looked pretty, but.
Speaker 2 (26:58):
Yeah, they've done it. All right.
Speaker 1 (26:59):
So first of all, this is Demiko. Ryan's in the
locker room, obviously very happy is he visits with his players?
Speaker 8 (27:07):
Amen, great job today. Every win is a pretty win.
It's out standing job by you. Wait to come and fight,
find a way to win. So many guys making play,
will and play you made right down and take the ball.
Outstanding job by you, man, outstanding job playing great defense
all day. All right, I got two game balls, two
game balls, give me one man show on being second half.
(27:27):
We needed you most.
Speaker 1 (27:38):
Come in the drive.
Speaker 8 (27:39):
We needed a cat Man big time played for us,
all right, in one more game ball, all right, God
being with us a couple of weeks and when we
needed in most. Hey, wait, I love the way we fought,
(28:01):
Love the way we win. We can win any type
of way, it doesn't matter. Just finish with the dumb
and I like how everybody finish the day. Man, Let's
keep building off of this one. No, we gotta quick turnaround,
all right, gotta quick turn around. Play on Thursday at home,
all right. So for you guys, we get back tonight.
Recovery starts all right, rolling his staff and train their
own sign. Everything will be open until ten o'clock, all right,
(28:22):
So guys take.
Speaker 1 (28:23):
Advantage of that. Make sure you recover and take care
of your body is the right way.
Speaker 8 (28:26):
And let's man, let's go out erased this one. Put
it to bed right now on the plane and we're
on the buffalo.
Speaker 7 (28:33):
On the buffalo.
Speaker 8 (28:34):
Let's go.
Speaker 1 (28:34):
Good team coming in our house. Let's go one time.
How there it is, And yeah, it's gonna be an
important one for them, clearly, uh, coming off of that win.
But now they pull even in the division at five
hored that was a road division win. Those are never
to be discounted. So now they get ready for the
(28:55):
Buffalo Bills Thursday night. What a huge game that is
going to be on Thursday, the Texans against the Bills
on Thursday. And you can hear it here on thirteen
under the Zone on Thursday night, Bills against the Texans. There,
but they have bounced back back to back wins of
the Jaguars, another division opponent, and the Texans they have
(29:18):
a total of let's see, they have just the one
loss in division play, which is good. So they are
now three and one in division play. Their other losses
are the Rams, the Bucks, and the Seahawks and the broncoas,
like we said, all really good teams. Every one of
(29:39):
those teams has at least six wins this year. So
maybe they're getting it flipped. Maybe they're getting it turned around,
and we'll see how it is. All right, let's hear
some more from the Texans head coach to Miko Ryans.
Davis Mills continues to fill in nicely. Helped help my
fantasy team again, by the way, snapped the two game
losing streak in part because of Davis.
Speaker 4 (30:01):
Mills crafty crafting waiver wire work.
Speaker 2 (30:04):
I had to do that.
Speaker 1 (30:04):
It was out of desperation because your guy Jane Daniels
was out. He was my backup to Mahomes. He was
kind of underperformed the last few weeks, you know.
Speaker 3 (30:12):
Yeah, I'm calling my fantasy team the dinner party team
from the office.
Speaker 4 (30:17):
Snip snap.
Speaker 3 (30:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (30:19):
Kind of difficult consistent, Yeah, all right, So how about
Davis Mills performance on that game winning drive for the Jacksons.
Speaker 9 (30:27):
Davis did a great job all day of really protecting
the football, making great decisions, and I mean no play
bigger than him connecting with Nico there when we needed
the most and two minute drive.
Speaker 7 (30:37):
That was such a huge play for us and Nico
and Davis.
Speaker 9 (30:40):
That connection really took off in the second half, which
way we needed.
Speaker 2 (30:44):
We needed a spark.
Speaker 9 (30:45):
We started getting the ball to Nico and we saw
he made play after play after play. So did an
outstanding job, you know, putting us in position there to
make that field go a lot easier.
Speaker 2 (30:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (30:56):
How about Nico keeping his feet in bounds there on
that Lake catch. What was going through Coach Ryan's mind
at that time.
Speaker 7 (31:04):
As calm as can be nice and easy. Great, know
they're gonna make the play.
Speaker 9 (31:08):
Nice, Yeah, it was you just trust your guys, right,
And that's what David is. Sean Davis keeps me calm
because he's so.
Speaker 7 (31:15):
Calm in the moment. But you know who we're going
to with the football matters.
Speaker 9 (31:19):
And when Nico's out there and he's getting targeted, I
think for the most time, when he gets targeted, he
comes down with the football.
Speaker 1 (31:25):
And it set the stage for Matthew right to connect
on his third field goal of the day. And how
huge has Matthew Wright been filling in it kicker for
fear Man.
Speaker 9 (31:34):
Yeah, it's a huge for matt to step in and
make that kick for us. He's been He's been great
for us since he's been here the past two weeks.
We needed the most to close the game out. He
did outstanding job. You know, can't get credit to him
without Brinkman and Tommy doing a great job the snap,
with the whole the protection, everybody, all eleven guys working
together and Matt kicking it through to get us a victory.
Speaker 1 (31:56):
All right, there it is. We'll hear some more from
Demiko Ranz next. Are somebody on the said, hey Bulldog Beatles, Yeah,
that's our music going out of the two o'clock hour.
That's where we were talking about the music starting the
three o'clock hour, And that's an instrumental version of Hey Bulldog.
Speaker 2 (32:12):
I can't remember.
Speaker 1 (32:13):
I asked you, did you ever hear the full regular
song Hey Bulldog? I've heard it before?
Speaker 3 (32:18):
I should I need a refresher and I'm gonna go oh,
but I'll tell you that instrumental version has been in
my head since I started producing the show a few
months ago.
Speaker 1 (32:26):
Yeah, there you go, all right, I go home. I'm
holming it. They actually did the song, I think in
nineteen sixty six, and it was the B side of
a single, but then it wound up on the Yellow
Submarine album, which was kind of a reissue, and they
threw a lot of different tunes on it that way
to satisfy Capitol Records in nineteen sixty eight and wound
up on that album as well. Okay, with regard to
(32:51):
the college football seat, we'll hear from more from Longhorns
head coach Steve Sarkisian coming up here in just a
few minutes. But for those who are wondering, you know
what is you know, what chance does Texas have now
of even being able to reach the college football Playoff. Well,
(33:13):
the chances are pretty slim to if we're being completely
honest and you think about it. Texas A and M's
perfect seven to zero conference played, Georgia finished SEC play
at seven to one. They have two non conference games remain.
They have Charlotte on Cupcake Weekend this weekend coming up,
and then of course that a huge rivalry match up
with Georgia Tech. They've got that. After that Ole Missus
(33:35):
six and one. They have one conference game remaining, the
Egg Bowl with Mississippi State, and that game is in Starggville,
Alabama six and one. They have one conference game remaining,
that's Auburn the Iron Bowl coming up Thanksgiving weekend. Then
you have the Long Runes at foreign to Oklahoma, is
foreign to Vanderbilt, is foreign to. Of those remaining games,
of course, Texas has Arkansas, and then they've got A and.
Speaker 2 (33:56):
M at home.
Speaker 1 (33:57):
Oklahoma also two home games remaining, Missouri this Saturday morning
at eleven and then LSU. Both games are at home.
So that's why a lot of the projections now are
having Oklahoma get into the playoff against Texas. And for
those of you who went to me in Texas when
they had they head matchup. That's true, but they now
have more losses in Oklahoma. They've got three soon as
(34:19):
have two. They really need Oklahoma in all probability to
lose a game one of those last two, either from
Missouri or LSU's to push them back. Meanwhile, Texas first
and foremost. Obviously the Longmans have to win their last year.
They have to beat Arkansas, and then the win over
A and M would carry some weight with the committee.
Aggies are not going to lose to Samford this week.
(34:41):
They'll destroy them, so they're going to go into the
game in Austin eleven and up.
Speaker 3 (34:45):
I think you need the Oklahoma loss, you need potentially
Notre Dame to slip up against a Syracuse or a Stanford,
and you probably need.
Speaker 4 (34:54):
To win with style in these last two games.
Speaker 1 (34:57):
Well, beating A and M will carry its own style point.
I think Vanderbilt has Kentucky at home, a game they'll
probably win, and then they close at Tennessee.
Speaker 4 (35:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (35:09):
So my point is you need the SEC schools around
you to drop a game or two because Vanderbilt is
going to be a head of Texas and the College
Football Playoff rankings and tomorrow So even though the long
ones own the head to head and win, but Texas
has more overall defeats than Oklahoma or Vanderbilt.
Speaker 3 (35:28):
It brings up a conversation that we can have later
if the results go this way about is Texas really
getting knocked for the Florida loss or is it the
Ohio State loss that would keep them out In that situation,
It's not.
Speaker 1 (35:39):
The Ohio State loss. It's the Florida loss that's ugly.
I mean, the Gators are three and seven, that's the
bad loss. They were not going to take any punishment
for a week one loss to the defending national champions
who have been the number one team in the country since.
Speaker 3 (35:53):
But say there's a two in the loss column, and
now you're talking about a head to head potentially carrying
more weight with the likes of Oklahoma and Vanderbilt.
Speaker 1 (36:00):
Yeah, I'm saying what they need is they need SEC
teams to lose around them. No, you're right, So they
need Oklahoma to lose, they need Vanderbilt to lose. And
the more realistic possibility is Ole miss losing to Mississippi
State and Startville than Alabama losing to Auburn. So potentially, yeah,
(36:23):
so I'm just saying they would need that more. I
think that is the more possible loss for teams around
them would be Ole Miss, But good chance ole Miss
winds up in the in the playoff regardless of what
happens in that game. I'm just talking about how it
affects Texas.
Speaker 3 (36:43):
It's a conversation around the Ohio State loss that will
come back to if it becomes relevant again, because right
now Texas still has to take care of the teams in.
Speaker 4 (36:50):
Front of them.
Speaker 1 (36:50):
But I don't see how the Ohio State loss even
comes in the conversations. A non conference loss against a
team from another league, you know, I don't And the
number one team in the country. Now, if Ohio State
loses to Michigan, maybe it gets brought in, But I mean,
they're not gonna They're not gonna win a head to
head argument with Ohio State. Ohio State's gonna be in
the playoff regardless. Their problem is the other SEC schools.
(37:12):
Their problem is Oklahoma and Vanderbilt and Alabama, who projections
right now say is probably holding on to the last
college football playoff at large spot at the number twelve.
They could use another laws from them, you know, but
I don't think that's nearly as likely as the possibility
of all because ole Miss has kind of looked kind
(37:32):
of so so at times, so is Alabama, and they
certainly did. For like, although Alabama had a big total
yardage game gain on Oklahoma, the turnovers crushed Alabama. So
it would help Texas a lot more if those three schools, Alabama, Oklahoma,
and Vanderbilt all were to take another loss. I think
(37:53):
Vanderbilt almost certainly will I down Oklahoma will I don't
think Alabama will ole Miss. Maybe that's why I say
when it's doubtful and maybe's and stuff like that, you're
really on the outside looking in. So for folks who
then say, well, what's the next level? If they're not
in the college football playoff and we're back to talk
about being in a bowl, what bowl game would be?
(38:16):
First of all, this would make long warned fans happy
to know that the no, there's no Alamo Bowl on
the horizon.
Speaker 2 (38:23):
Because that would not involve in an SEC school.
Speaker 1 (38:26):
I think long warnon fans have seen enough of the
Alamo Bowl and the Holiday Bowl from past years, and
the Texas Bowl also for that matter. Although an SEC
representative does go to the Texas Bowl, but I don't
think the long Runs would drop that far because that
bowl is pretty far down in the pecking order. Even
though the SEC makes the bowl assignments on that, it's
in consultation with the athletic directors and the head coaches
(38:49):
as well. I think the two most likely bowl destinations
for the long Wrorns are both in the state of
Florida one and both are on New Year's Eve. One
is the Reliable West Bowl that's in Tampa used to
be known as the Outback Bowl for several years.
Speaker 2 (39:04):
Uh that uh, And.
Speaker 1 (39:05):
Both of these bowl games, by the way, match in
SEC school against a Big ten school, so relya quest
in Tampa. The other one is the Citrus Bowl, now
known as the Cheese It Citrus Bowl. That is not
to be confused which was the bowl game that was
the cheese At Bowl which is now the Pop Tarts Bowl. Both, however,
(39:28):
are played in the same stadium in Orlando, so we'll see.
Speaker 3 (39:33):
What involves the the wake slash heroic funeral of a
pop Tark.
Speaker 2 (39:37):
Yeah yeah, yeah, that's right. Yeah, that's that's true.
Speaker 1 (39:40):
Uh that uh. That Pop Tarts Bowl I think is
Big twelve versus a CC. I don't think the Pop
Tart Bowl involves the SEC, but the SEC is in
the Cheese at Citrus Bowl and the relya quest bart,
Am I right about.
Speaker 4 (39:57):
That ACC Big twelve in the Pop time.
Speaker 1 (39:59):
I thought so because I remember Kansas State was in it.
There have been in some other schools in it, so
I think it would be one of those two bowl
games and all that. Especially if they beat Arkansas this week,
they're going to be in a higher tier than a
lot of the other SEC schools because they'll still actually
be at least mentally mathematically alive for a college football
(40:20):
Playoff or depending on what else happens. But they're going
to need some upsets around them now. It would have
to fall to the fortunes of others as well as
them ultimately, and then, like I said, mountainous tasks, gonna
have to beat the A and M.
Speaker 4 (40:32):
Right right.
Speaker 3 (40:32):
The conversation I was trying to have earlier all hinges
on beating A and M.
Speaker 4 (40:36):
So there's not even a point of bringing in everybody.
Speaker 1 (40:38):
Everybody knows that that there's not any conversation we had
about being in the College Football Playoff that does not
include a win over A and m Now, if they've
beaten Georgia, then maybe you could look at it that way.
Speaker 4 (40:49):
Or if they'd lost on the last play of the game.
Speaker 1 (40:52):
Right then maybe there's a little more conversation. But they
couldn't lose both of those games anyway. They have to
win at least one of those games and the Art
Arkansas game and get some help.
Speaker 2 (41:02):
Now they have.
Speaker 1 (41:03):
Before they weren't in a position where they had to
get some help. Now that they've lost that game, they
got to win out and get help. So that's why
I'm saying the more probable destination would be one of
those two Florida New Year's Eve games, either rely a
Quest in Tampa or the Jesus Citrus Bowl in Orlando.
All Right, we're gonna hear more from Long Horn's head
(41:24):
coach Steve. Steve Sarkisian coming up here on sports Radio
AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 9 (41:35):
Welcome back to the Craig Way Show and the Voice
of the Longhorns.
Speaker 2 (41:39):
Craig Way.
Speaker 9 (41:40):
Follow Craig on social media pack Corn Voice.
Speaker 1 (41:47):
I can see you back.
Speaker 7 (41:49):
He said this, Well, you do what you do some.
Speaker 1 (42:00):
But the late great Gordon Lightfood would have been eighty
seven a day today, it would have been his part day.
Are you are you familiar with any of the Gordon
Lightfoot catalog?
Speaker 9 (42:21):
No?
Speaker 4 (42:21):
Not really.
Speaker 1 (42:22):
This is great though, great Uh Canadian singer songwriter. This
was a huge hit, the seven Sundown.
Speaker 4 (42:31):
I have Canadian musicians in my family.
Speaker 3 (42:33):
I hope they're not listening to me say that.
Speaker 7 (42:36):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (42:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (42:37):
He was a lifelong Toronto Maple Leafs fan. There's a
there's a statue of him in his native Ontario where
he grew up, a huge maple Leafs fan. Great dude,
he said. This song was written about, not necessarily about
his girlfriend. He had a kind of a living girlfriend
(42:58):
and she had made some excuse that he kind of
thought was kind of flimsy about not meeting up with
him for dinner. He just kind of went that came
to his mind, or as I, hey you better watch
better watch south Down, better check your south Down. We
did play a song in his last week that you
are familiar the wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald. That's right
(43:21):
because it was the fiftieth anniversary of that wreck on
November ten, nineteen seventy five, and he wrote the song
about that. So anyway, Yeah, the great Gordon Lightfoot. All right,
let's hear from Long Worn's head coach Steve Sarkisian. This
was from the news conference this morning that we brought
to you live.
Speaker 2 (43:39):
Here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
Speaker 1 (43:42):
He was asked about the running game and how the
rushing output has since last year kind of been cutting
half in conference games against SEC teams.
Speaker 6 (43:54):
His thoughts about that, There's probably a combination of things.
Speaker 7 (43:59):
You know.
Speaker 6 (44:00):
One, I felt like we were blocking well in the
run game a year ago. I felt like we found
a rhythm in the run game with Trey a year ago.
I think Trey really hit his stride kind of the
midpoint of the season, maybe the OU game last year,
and those two combinations, I feel like we had real
threats on the on the outside, you know, with Matt
(44:21):
and Isaiah and DeAndre was going and Gunner and so
I think people were deploying a little bit differently on us.
Speaker 7 (44:29):
And then and then.
Speaker 6 (44:29):
Ultimately there's a confidence from a play caller standpoint of
where's the strength of your team and what are you
trying to lean into to to ultimately win. You know,
last year we were we were really a shut down defense.
And you felt very confident about our ability to play
defense and shut people down. I think sometimes this season
a we haven't ran it the way we would have liked.
(44:50):
And so do you do you are you comfortable going run, run,
and willing to live with third down and whatever that
is and third down and having to convert to stay
on the field knowing if you put are you are
you comfortable enough to go out there and shut somebody down?
And so like the other night, Georgia's first two drives
is two touchdowns is fourteen to three, And so where's
your level of confidence of Hey, if we run, run, pass,
(45:13):
we got a punt, how good do you feel about
it not being twenty one to three as opposed to
fourteen to three. And so you sometimes you have to
shift kind of your focus on how do you want
to attack and what do you need to do now?
Credit to the other night, our defense started mountain stops
and three and outs and things, and so games can
take a trajectory that are different than others. But I
(45:33):
think you have to look at at all. At the
end of the day, we have to be better at
running the ball. There's no question about it. Nobody is
nobody's in our building thinking, hey, we're good, but we've
got to find.
Speaker 7 (45:44):
A way to do that.
Speaker 6 (45:46):
And whether that's schematically, whether that's personnel, whether that's you know,
shrinking the plan, whether that's expanding the plan.
Speaker 7 (45:53):
There's a lot of ways to get that done. But
we've got to.
Speaker 6 (45:56):
Find a way to gain yards on the ground on
to where we aren't just a one dimensional football team now.
Speaker 1 (46:03):
From the defensive side, Georgia threw some screen game and
dump off passes, were able to get some big chunk
plays during the game on Saturday night, and Sarcers asked,
where is the fine line between what you do with
press coverage and making them earn it and how you
do it and try to cut it off and not
allow them to become big gainers.
Speaker 6 (46:23):
I thought they did have a good plan on some
of the balls to the perimeter, and you know, number one,
it was scary because he can go buy you in
a heartbeat. He was very electric, and so we tried
to play with a little bit more of a cushion there.
I did think we had some opportunities where we stayed
on top. The unfortunate part was, to your point, some
(46:44):
of the flat routes. Some of the crossing routes when
they completed, they turned into explosives. And that's where we've
got to be better. That's where we've got to populate
the ball better. We've got to leverage the ball better.
And if it's a gain of fourteen to fifteen yards
over the middle, that is what it is. They hit
the one over the middle and he goes out the
back door and runs it down to the six yard line.
They you know, they created explosives that way. And then
(47:06):
on the other side of it is we had some
real breakdowns and coverage and there was lack of I
don't want to say lack of communication, was lack of
communication and being reciprocated to where one person's communicating the
other one's playing the call as it's being called. And so,
you know, I think on the corner route the first
touchdown pass, we screw that up. On the seam route
(47:31):
to sixteen, we screw that up. And so there were
some things there that we got to play it better,
and we're more than capable of playing it better. And
so that gives me some confidence knowing we can play
it better. We're not sitting downstairs like we have no answers,
but we need to play it better for sure.
Speaker 2 (47:45):
All right.
Speaker 1 (47:45):
Next he was asked about the offense and how they
did start being able to run the ball and they
had some clicks on offense, and he was asked about
the on the short drives for the offense after that
opening drive for the field goal.
Speaker 7 (47:59):
Think, we got to catch the ball a little bit better.
Speaker 6 (48:01):
I think, two, we got to throw the ball a
little bit better when we have some opportunities. And then three,
we got to make sure that we continue to try
to call things that put players in position to have success.
Speaker 1 (48:11):
That was the reference I was making to you earlier
last hour, because the texts are talking about seeing Sark
arch how he has improved, and sark is the first
one to agree with you Butt. In fact, we hear
him talk in some glowing terms about manning a little
bit later on. But he did say, as he just said,
got to catch the ball a little bit better, got
to throw the ball a little bit better on some
of those drives to keep those drives going. This business
(48:36):
of going back to work with two games remaining and
nothing that Texas can do with what goes on on
the outside as it relates to their ultimate postseason destination.
But Sark was asked, is it easier said than done
to get your guys tunnel visioned on that here and
(49:00):
now and not be caught up in some of the
outside stuff about where they might go or whether they
get in or not and what bowl and blah blah blah.
Speaker 2 (49:08):
And so he was asked, is it easier said than done?
Speaker 1 (49:11):
I don't know.
Speaker 6 (49:11):
You know, I feel very confident in our team and
so that they can do that. Again, I thought we
had a great meeting this morning. I think young people
are really resilient in general, and I think when you
give them a platform to be resilient, that they'll do that.
(49:32):
I think them understanding there is a light at the
end of the tunnel here if we can handle our
business and do it the right way. And so, you know,
like anything in life, when there's hope, we can strive
a little further and stay on task with what we
need to do. But but again, this group gives me
no reason that they won't do that. But again time
will tell, right, I'm going to sit here and make
(49:54):
any guarantees if if we can't, if we don't have
the ability to do that, But I'm confident that we can.
Speaker 7 (50:00):
We'll see. We'll see over the next four or five days,
how we do.
Speaker 1 (50:02):
All right, let me give you a little background on
something that leads into this next question. I'm on the
plane flight home from Atlanta, coming home yesterday morning, and
you know, I'm really tired because it was we were late, late,
late late getting back to the hotel.
Speaker 2 (50:23):
Imagine, takes a while to empty.
Speaker 1 (50:25):
Out ninety three thousand fans in an on campus situation
with winding streets and things of that nature. So it's
only about twenty five miles I think from where the
hotel was in relation to Sandford Stadium. It took us
an hour and a half to get back. So it
(50:47):
took a while, and I lay down for about two
and a half three hours. Got to get up, get
ready to go to the airport, and we do got
to drive an hour and a half back into Atlanta
and drop off the rent car, you know whatever. I
signed up for it, just like so many others did.
I'm not complaining about that. That's part of the deal.
But the whole purpose of telling you this is that
(51:07):
when we're in the air, in flight, I dozed off
and fallen asleep as film retired. Then I wake up
and I had to go to the restroom. So I'm
just walk down, you know, because when you're trying to
get a wake to get down there, you're drinking a
lot of coffee and a lot of water. So obviously
you know that's gonna, you know, be ready to pour
(51:32):
out of you as well. So get up, and I'm
walking down the hall, down the aisle and the aircraft
to the bathroom, to the lath and seated on an
aisle seat about eight or nine rows behind me as
Kirk balls the Houston Chronicle. Now, Kirk is a voting member,
(51:55):
has been for years on the AP Top twenty five
College Football poll as well as the Heisman Poem. But
I asked Kirk, I said, I just kind of I
didn't even see him at first, because, like I said,
I'm just kind of zombie, and I'm walking in Elison Kirk,
Sody craigersim not so they And then I just happen
to ask him. I said, how hard you dropped the
long horns on your ballot? And he said seventeen And
(52:17):
I think they wound up No, he said eighteen. They
wound up seventeen that's what it was. But anyway, the
point of all of that was is that there were
a lot of people, mainly media people, but fans get
caught up in it too. But the public record shows
(52:37):
the media expectation of the Longhorns with that preseason vote
of number one in the country, So obviously the expectations
are now the Longhorns have their own expectations, which, as
I've always said, nobody has higher expectations for what they
feel they're capable of doing than the players and coaches themselves. However,
can't get any higher the number one. When you voted
(52:58):
number one the preseason pull. Kirk Bowles asked Sark what
did he think were the main reasons why his team
had underachieved?
Speaker 10 (53:11):
They what would you say the main reasons are of
this team is underachieved according to who? Well in your
preseason number one, I think most people would agree three
losses is not achieving which are capable of.
Speaker 6 (53:24):
I mean, I guess that's into who voted us number one. Okay,
what I think is that this team has competed their tailoff.
They've been faced with a lot of different adversity and injuries,
and a lot of stuff has come across this team's plate.
I'm very proud of them with their resiliency. You know,
(53:45):
at the end of the day, at the University of Texas,
we're held to a very high standard, and the standard
is to compete for championships year in and year out,
and we're going to play the best teams in the country.
We're going to schedule the best teams in the country.
But by the end of the season, we'll play of
our twelve regular season opponents, five of those teams will
be top ten teams when we played them, so nearly
(54:06):
half our schedule, and we have an opportunity at the
end of the regular season to do something that nobody's
done since twenty nineteen, and that's beat three top ten
ranked teams in the regular season.
Speaker 7 (54:16):
Last team to do that was LSU with Joe Burrow.
So have we been.
Speaker 6 (54:20):
Faced with a pretty difficult schedule? Have we been faced
with high expectations? Sure, but that's why we came here.
So we'll be okay, okay, all right?
Speaker 1 (54:28):
So there was that next thing was and again this
goes back to the Arch banning things. Has Arch been
able to finally get over a hump since folks aren't
talking about him as much as they used to about him, good, bad, whatever.
Speaker 6 (54:42):
I just think that the guy does what he continues
to do. He puts his head down and works. He
tries to be a great leader. You know, he assumes
responsibility when when he could do something better. He picks
people up when somebody else makes mistakes. I mean, that's
the sign of a guy who's maturing and is very
comfortable in his own skin. I'm very proud of Arch.
(55:05):
These aren't all easy games, and that's not fun in
the fourth quarter when you're down, you know, multiple scores,
and you're and you're trying to get in the end zone,
and they got their ears peering, pinned back and rushing
the passer. But he competed like he always does, and
he'll prepare again this week to go out and play
really well.
Speaker 1 (55:20):
And one more from Sark this hour, and then we'll
hear the rest of his comments coming up next hour.
I kind of thought it was kind of weird that
it would be termed this, but I understand the point
of the question. Sark was asked if this is a
trap game, this Arkansas game coming up with A and
(55:43):
M the following week. I understand the implication obviously A
and M being the rivalry what it is, and the
Aggies are undefeated, YadA, YadA, but they just came off
a loss and this is a bit of a rivalry game.
But sark understood the question. Is this kind of a
trap game?
Speaker 7 (55:59):
I think it's very.
Speaker 6 (56:00):
Scary game because this is a very dangerous Arkansas team,
and we address that with the team this morning. You know,
you put up their last five games, the score of
all those games, and like I said, twenty three to
twenty two. I think first LSU the Auburn game, Auburn
gets a late score to make it thirty four. I
think twenty three, something like that. A and M's forty
five forty two. Mississippi State's thirty eight thirty five. Tennessee
(56:25):
is thirty four to thirty one. So they got their
attention real quick. You turn the tape on, it getses
their attention real quick. But I think the other side
of it is, man, we're restoring a great rivalry and
first time for Arkansas to be back at DKR in
quite some time, and so I know our guys are
excited about that too. They've had to go there twice
now and they know what that environment was like.
Speaker 7 (56:46):
So for them to come here to play in DKR.
Speaker 6 (56:49):
I know our guys are excited about the opportunity, but
we need to be careful.
Speaker 7 (56:51):
I'll definitely say that.
Speaker 2 (56:53):
Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 1 (56:53):
All right there it is Long Orange Head coach Steve
Sarkashan more from start coming up next out. We'll continue
on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone in the
iHeartRadio app. You're in a Long Orange Funday on Sports
Radio AM thirteen under the Zone. Okay, there's a couple
of different ways folks do text the program. One the
screen that I see when you text the word Texas,
(57:14):
follow by your question or comment to eight one, five
to three zero standard messaging in data rage pamphire. And
then there's another way what they're contacting you what.
Speaker 3 (57:23):
Yeah, if you if you're with us via YouTube or
x or Facebook, you can comment and be a part
of the show that way.
Speaker 1 (57:30):
Okay, And you said we had a couple of comments.
Speaker 3 (57:32):
Yeah on YouTube from somebody going by rude Wayne Texas.
Speaker 4 (57:36):
I don't know if that's Dwayne or Wayne it's gay.
Speaker 3 (57:40):
During during Sarks exchange with Kirk Bowlesey comments and I
hope he goes to the NFL. I assume he's talking
about Sark there. The next comment followed up on that
he's two and eight and top ten games at Texas.
Speaker 4 (57:51):
It's unacceptable. It's James Franklin.
Speaker 1 (57:54):
Okay, all right, a couple of things. Let me let
me take him one in the time. First of all,
you said, I hope he goes to the NFL.
Speaker 2 (58:02):
I don't see that as likely.
Speaker 1 (58:04):
He's talked about being committed here to Texas, so I mean,
if that's based on listening to Desmond Howard or somebody
else in that, I understand where that might have come up,
but I don't think that's likely. The deal about two
and eight against top tens, yeah, so tough to beat
top tens, but certainly to do better James Franklin. He's
(58:26):
already accomplished more than James Franklin has. James Franklin got
to the one playoff and got beat. It's been back
to back playoffs there. James Franklin did not win a
Big Ten championship. Texas won the last Big twelve one
that they were in before they went. He's already accomplished
more than him. And speaking of James Franklin, it just
(58:48):
kind of announced a few minutes ago he's the new
head coach of Virginia Tech. So, you know, while it
didn't work for him at Penn State, there were a
lot of people out there who were very, very interested
in it. So he's going to be the next coach. Look,
I think Sark would be the first to tell you
that's the two and eight is not acceptable. Your version
(59:10):
of what the consequences should be of that in the
short term for this guy and what is long term
are probably going to differ from a lot of other people,
including the athletic department, which has a great deal of
money tied up in him and is very it's and
it's more than just the money.
Speaker 2 (59:27):
They're committed to him.
Speaker 1 (59:28):
They what Crystalconzi and Kevin Elsize, the chairman of the
board of regents and the university president as well, what
they're They're all, you know, very very committed to him,
and a lot of people right now it's I'm not
saying that the texture is in this specific category, but
there are people who are what was that Our old friend,
(59:51):
the late Sean Adams used to say, keyboard gangsters, And
it's easy to sit back and fire away on a
keyboard and say he's got to go, he's out of here,
and all that. I have respect for the people who
want to express their opinion, be it on the keyboard
or on the air, or however it is. My point
is is that the amount of vitriol uh in terms
(01:00:14):
of absolution, he's got to go, it's unacceptable. I would
probably slow the roll on that a little bit, but
I understand when folks want more than, you know, than
what they're getting. Were you if Tom Herman had been
able to get in that position to get him into
the playoffs a couple of times and then was two
(01:00:39):
and eight against him, maybe he would have been around
a little bit longer than he was.
Speaker 2 (01:00:44):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:00:46):
We're not that far removed from Charlie Strong with three
consecutive losing seasons in one Bowl trip. My point is
is that the view from the out side on what
the program has accomplished since ARC has been here is
going to vary based on the individual expectation. And that's understandable.
(01:01:12):
I get that. But my point is is that there's
probably not going to be any kind of change coming,
not for a while, especially as the team continues that
we're not talking about anybody with a losing record. There's
seven and three right now. They were certainly in the
conference race until last Saturday. They're not completely out of
(01:01:33):
the college football race as well. So ultimately it does
fall on his shoulders and Sarks the first to say it,
and ultimately there's you know, there are things that need improving.
He said all of that today in the press conference.
So sometimes, however, and I've noticed this, I'm not necessarily
(01:01:54):
saying this about this Texter, but sometimes the football coach
will say all of those exact same things that a
lot of people are saying. He's just saying it without
saying I got to be out of here or whatever.
So and understand this, anytime you make a change for
(01:02:14):
the with the the head football coach, you're starting all
over again.
Speaker 2 (01:02:19):
Is that what you really want?
Speaker 1 (01:02:20):
I mean, here's a guy who has gone twenty five
and five the last two years, so it's thirty two
and eight is his record the last three years?
Speaker 2 (01:02:31):
That really bad? Thirty two and eight, all of that.
Speaker 1 (01:02:35):
So he understands, and I think everybody gonn to say
they want you want better success against that. They do
have two top ten wins this season, so to say
he's two and eight. That might be two and eight
in the last ten total. He's not two and eight
all time on that because his win over Alabama at
Alabama wh their top ten. He's got two this year
(01:02:59):
Oklahoma and vander bil those are two top ten wins.
One was number six, one was number nine. So there's again,
sometimes folks are getting information from blasts, be it tweets
or you know whatever, podcast or whatever and using it
to form their arguments. And that's fine. Just understand all
(01:03:21):
the numbers that go into all that. Did we have
another one?
Speaker 3 (01:03:24):
Did you say someone says I think Kiffin could win
big here?
Speaker 1 (01:03:29):
Lane Kiffin has one big at Ole miss. He did
not win big at Tennessee. He did not win big
at USC when he got fired right off the plane.
Speaker 2 (01:03:42):
That but he might be.
Speaker 1 (01:03:44):
But but speculating about that stuff is rather immaterial because
there's not going to be a coaching change made. The
only way that it even happens is would be start
leaving on his own. It's not because of anything that's
going to happen with university administration.
Speaker 2 (01:03:59):
That's just not going to happen.
Speaker 3 (01:04:01):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:04:01):
Like I said, you know, the guy is thirty two
and eight over nearly the last three seasons, two seasons
plus ten ball games.
Speaker 3 (01:04:11):
Well, we're throwing hats in the ring. Dan Lanning gets
some love in the comments. Now everybody's everybody's wish casting.
Speaker 2 (01:04:17):
Okay, wish cast.
Speaker 3 (01:04:19):
It's it's it's no, you're not gonna you're not going
to find some magic.
Speaker 1 (01:04:23):
Wand I'm just saying it's you know, it's just like
when somebody asked Sark a couple of weeks ago about
all the coaches being fired and stuff, and he's like, well,
who are you going to get that's going to do
a better job at certain places? So anyway, there's the
same Dan Lanning who got clocked by Ohio State last
(01:04:43):
year in the playoff? Is that the one we're talking.
Speaker 3 (01:04:46):
About Boston Indiana at home this year? I mean, look
at there's good points too.
Speaker 2 (01:04:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:04:51):
Yeah, someone said, I believe it's Sark definitely better than
the last ten years with Charlie Strong and Tom Ruman.
We will get better and the game will slow down
even more for arche archers developed And that's pretty clear.
Speaker 1 (01:05:00):
Yeah, it's continued. He again, he needs to do some
more and they talk about that as well, But he's
getting better and hopefully the program bounces back.
Speaker 2 (01:05:10):
We'll continue.
Speaker 1 (01:05:11):
We'll wrap up our number two on thirteen under the
Zone and third and final hour of the program here
on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone. Craig Wait
join by the producer Jay Kerman. Glad to have you along.
Sign it again. We still have several pairs of tickets
will give away for tomorrow's Texas writer basketball game Long
(01:05:35):
worn Men's basketball the men back in action tomorrow night.
It's an eight o'clock tip at Moody And if you're
interested in getting a pair of tickets, we still have
several given away. All you have to do is make
sure if you have the iHeartRadio app downloaded.
Speaker 2 (01:05:51):
It's free. It's easy.
Speaker 1 (01:05:52):
You just do the quick search, pull up AM thirteen
under the Zone. We even suggest you make it a preset.
It'll really pull up quickly. But pull up A thirteen
under the Zone, tapped the little red button with a
white microphone, and then leave us a message. You can
be up to thirty seconds, don't have to be that.
It can be five seconds. Hey, my name is Bob Smith.
I'd like two tickets for the game tomorrow night, and

We have several pairs left over, so that's all you
have to do. We always avail ourselves of you via
the iHeartRadio app Glad to Glad that take that and again.
And this always happens after a tough loss. There's people
(01:06:33):
there's howling wolves at the door or wanting change and
things like that. And this made one may you laugh,
what's always talking about? Wanted to make a coach and change.
Our resident North Texas fan said, please don't take Eric Morris.
He's the coach of the main Green in North Texas.
(01:06:54):
Are nine to one. They're ranked in the poll for
the first time. It's nineteen fifty nine in the AP pole.
They were in the nineteen seventy seven. They spent about
eight weeks in the poll at like number eighteen in
the coaches poll.
Speaker 2 (01:07:06):
It was in the UPI coaches poll.
Speaker 1 (01:07:08):
They beat Tennessee that year in Knoxville, and I think
they beat Florida State that year then a couple of
big wins. They were a Division one independent at that
time and went nine and two into not even going
to a bowl game because they were an independent, just
didn't attract much attention. But they they this year, they're
not in one. They're in position. If they win their
(01:07:29):
last two games at Rice this Saturday and then at
home against Temple, they wind up hosting the American Conference
championship game, and if they win that, they've got a
good shot to get in the playoffs. It's the highest
ranked G five program. I'd say James Madison is going
to garner some more attention. They'll probably get in the
rankings this week. North Texas might get in the rankings
this week. We'll see Eric Morris. By the way, his
(01:07:51):
name has already been linked to some job openings like
Oklahoma State and a couple others. So just understand, you know,
that's how it was when North Texas basketball a great
run they had under Grahama Chaslin, who's now doing really
good work at Texas Tech. So it does happen that way.
You said we had one or two others.
Speaker 4 (01:08:11):
Yeah, on YouTube?
Speaker 3 (01:08:12):
Are our comments or Rude Wade who brought up the
James Franklin comparison. He said, can we agree Sark's portal
strategy failed? He has to be more aggressive?
Speaker 1 (01:08:23):
Well, with the understanding that hindsight is always twenty twenty,
I get that. I think one thing to do is
and I think I know where Wayne is going with us,
and I'll get to his probable point in a moment.
If you look at the ones that were brought in,
I think I'm just looking at the too deep alone.
(01:08:45):
Everyone has contributed except maybe one player on the offensive side.
Jack Andres from cal It's done a really good job.
Emitt Mosley, now that he's healthy, we're seeing what.
Speaker 2 (01:08:55):
He can do. The Stanford transfer.
Speaker 1 (01:09:00):
Matthew Caldwell backup quarterback, huge touchdown pass that he had,
Mason Shipley the kicker. He's contributed, Jack Bowmeaster the punter
coming in from Australia. All of those guys have contributed
on the defensive side. Guys on the defensive front, Hero Kanoom,
Rod Watson, Cold Brevard and Travis Shaw have all made
(01:09:24):
very positive contributions in the linebacking court. Trey Moore sad
he's a semifinalist or a finalist for the Campbell Trophy
coming in from UTSA. He's a a Brad Spence coming
in from Arkansas. It'll be interesting when he goes up
against his former school this Saturday. All those guys have
(01:09:44):
contributed and made an impact. I think the only one
out of looking at what's listed as the too deep
that really hasn't impacted is Levon Johnson, who's a backup
defensive lineman transferred.
Speaker 2 (01:09:56):
It from Maryland.
Speaker 1 (01:09:57):
But again, Brevard Watson Canoe, all of those guys transfers,
Burke and Simmons who came in as freshman edge rushers,
with Lance Jackson rotating in there, it's been kind of
difficult for him to crack the code. But I think
probably maybe Wayne's talking about the areas where guys were
(01:10:17):
not added, and I get what you're saying there, Wayne,
and most notably folks are going to look at the
offensive front. Injuries have certainly played into that, but also
some inconsistency and what they're trying to do, and what
we heard from Sark, what they're trying to do is
get the running game back in gear.
Speaker 3 (01:10:37):
Yeah, running back to another spot where the Longhorns didn't add.
Speaker 1 (01:10:40):
Well, and that's where injuries or Trey Weisner was a
thousand yard rushier a year ago and then he was
out for four games.
Speaker 4 (01:10:48):
J Jack Exter miss time again.
Speaker 1 (01:10:50):
Yeah, so I think there's that if you're pointing to
the secondary where right now the long, warm pass defensive
trug a little bit. They returned in All America to
Michael's Tapp, of course, had to miss a couple of
games within Manny Mohammad was a returning pre season All
Conference player, has missed a little time when he's gone out.
Jalen Gilbot has been in an all of the lineup,
Johnny McDonald Xavier fill to me, the freshman Grayson Littleton
(01:11:12):
has largely played pretty well, but it's been inconsistent, especially
over the past few weeks. So your point is made there, Wade,
and we'll see, you know, Wayne, we'll see how Sark
wants to approach. And when you get to the off season,
like I said, you got to find somebody else who's
a fit for the program and not just take a
number on a number itself on them. Okay, let's hear
(01:11:35):
from Dimico Ryans with the Texans getting that big win
to pull to five and five. Now are the Texans
so they have been able to pull back to five hundred,
and you say, well, what's the big whoop about that?
Considering they started zeroing three and then they were three
and five. To get back to five hundred at least
(01:11:58):
kind of put them back on the per for you
the playoff race. But in talking about his team, he
was asked about Will Anderson and his impact, what he has.
Speaker 2 (01:12:07):
Done for the team and what he did for them yesterday.
Speaker 7 (01:12:10):
Yeah, Will is a dynamic playmaker for us, and that's
what we need in the game.
Speaker 9 (01:12:14):
Like it's about the players making plays, and our playmakers
showed up and Will is definitely one of those guys.
For him to take the ball, you know, to get
us in a short field right there, something we've been
harping on and talking about. And Will comes up with
another sack, forced fumble, fumble recovery, huge play for.
Speaker 2 (01:12:30):
Us, all right.
Speaker 1 (01:12:31):
He was asked, does it look like your team now
has kind of learned how to finish games?
Speaker 2 (01:12:37):
On the plus side, it's.
Speaker 9 (01:12:38):
Really just about executing in the moment, right, remaining calm
and whatever it takes to close out the game, like
being diligent and doing your job the right way.
Speaker 2 (01:12:47):
All right.
Speaker 1 (01:12:47):
And then he was asked about the defense continuing during
this run to play at a high level.
Speaker 7 (01:12:52):
Yeah, the guys are playing together.
Speaker 2 (01:12:54):
Thought we did a good job on.
Speaker 9 (01:12:55):
Third now early on and later in the game we
let some third downs get out that are unacceptable. So
I feel like we can still finish better even the
every the end. We can't allow them to get in
the touchdown to drive down the field. We allow two
big penalties, right, we allow a quarterback to escape the
pocket again, like we had to got to do a
better job of not allowing them to be in that position.
Speaker 1 (01:13:16):
So this football team started zero and three, that they
were two and four, there were three and five, Now
they're five and five. How have they been able to
get climb the hill back up to get five hundred.
Speaker 9 (01:13:25):
It's team football and that's what we're about. My number
one rule is this a team first mentality. Everything that
we do is never about one guy. It's going to
be collective, collectively, coaches, players, staff, everybody working together.
Speaker 7 (01:13:39):
And that's what we have here with the Texans.
Speaker 9 (01:13:40):
Our support staff is outstanding, Our coaching staff has done
a great job, and our players they're the ones who
step up and make the players need to make to
put us in position to win these games. So I
can't thank those guys enough for the grit that they've
shown and that will wheel to finish all right.
Speaker 1 (01:13:56):
So there you are on that on the techs line
in North Texas. It's a Craig wave, proving once again
why I can't have nice things.
Speaker 4 (01:14:04):
That supposed to be. He's already getting all the interests.
Speaker 1 (01:14:09):
Yeah, yeah, you'll get the interest but we'll see, we'll see.
I know they were working on trying to get a
contract extension with them in their man Sea, Pala said.
Saving many would say Texas maybe the third or fourth
best team in Texas. Texas is a big state. Uh,
and so far, I think it's safe to say that, Uh,
Texas A and M will find out and they head
(01:14:29):
to head matchup in Texas Tech better records, both in
the top ten, so they would be ahead of the
North Texas. You might be pushing it on that, and
I'm proud of alumnus of North Texas. But you know,
one step at a time for the Mean Green. Could
we see it in a bowl game? No, no, not
to the American No, No, that wouldn't That wouldn't happen
(01:14:51):
in a bowl game. The only way that that would
happen maybe if they were the twelve seed going out
to Lubbock to play a five seed Texas Tech.
Speaker 2 (01:14:59):
That you could do.
Speaker 1 (01:15:00):
Of course, you know they've they've had success out there
and they got blasted out there last year. But that
could be one possibility of Tech rose as high as
the five, or fan m fell to the five, if
North Texas fell on that. Otherwise there's not a bow
tie in between the SEC and the American right all right,
up next, more from logrn's head coach Steve Sarkisian here
(01:15:20):
on thirteen under the zone.
Speaker 5 (01:15:22):
These she left me now knowing the world to do it.
Every halfway, me slip away every highway. You've seen that
it is a mon and a half the blue from
my head down to my shoes, every highway, Let me
(01:15:49):
slip away, slip away on you.
Speaker 1 (01:15:52):
I mentioned earlier that this is not a yacht rock
Wednesday because it's Monday, and it's not a yacht rock
Monday either. Today. He would have been the great Gordon
Lightfoot's eighty seventh birthday. He was a great singer songwriter
out of Canada. Jake Carmon's learning about him now throughout
(01:16:12):
the show. Right you said you weren't familiar with any
of his catalog. You hadn't heard name of that your record,
the event Fitzgerald we played last week? Have you heard
that before?
Speaker 3 (01:16:19):
I heard his name I'm sure I've heard him on
the radio. Before you say, who's Gordon Lightfoot, I'll tell
you a musician.
Speaker 1 (01:16:25):
But that was about the depth of it.
Speaker 4 (01:16:27):
That's about it.
Speaker 1 (01:16:28):
I got you, I got you. This is my favorite.
Gordon Lightfoot hung off and carefrey highway, not wanting to
recover an old lost love.
Speaker 6 (01:16:35):
He was.
Speaker 1 (01:16:36):
He really specialized in those, you know, wistful type of
memory type songs.
Speaker 4 (01:16:47):
I can I can pick up on that. This is
this is really nice.
Speaker 1 (01:16:51):
In fact, next when we come back for the next break,
there's another one I want you to play. We'll do it.
Speaker 2 (01:16:55):
It'll kind of falls into the category.
Speaker 4 (01:16:57):
Okay again, all right.
Speaker 1 (01:16:59):
Meanwhile, let's hear from Long Worn's head coach Steve Sarkeesian
from the weekly news conference which we brought you earlier
today here on a thirteen under the Zone. So let's
hear from sark and moving forward from that, he was asked,
you know, he was asked about the trap game, and
(01:17:22):
you heard his conversation about the trap game and not
necessarily that it was a trap game, but it was
a dangerous game because Arkansas is better than the record.
Chose better than the record indicates. It's a rivalry game,
and there's all of that as well. All right, back
to some of the nuts and bolts. What was evident
(01:17:45):
in the loss to Georgia's Saturday Night There were some misthrows,
but more than the mists were the drops. There were
several key drops in the game. Ryan Wingo was one
of those, and he wasn't the only one. Jack Henries
had one on his hands that he was unable to
pull down.
Speaker 4 (01:18:05):
I think Washington had one.
Speaker 2 (01:18:06):
Washington had one. Who am I leaving out here?
Speaker 1 (01:18:11):
I know I'm leaving out somebody else who had a drop,
who had had a more DeAndre more? Yeah. So anyway,
so they're different ones. And he was asked about the drops,
does he have concern about it and does that change
how he is viewing the wide receiver room development.
Speaker 6 (01:18:30):
I think our receivers have have grown, you know again,
I'm i'm I was frustrated early in the season for
the lack of continuity and and just with Arch and
all of the receivers.
Speaker 7 (01:18:42):
I think he found his stride, probably with Parker the earliest.
Speaker 6 (01:18:46):
Then he and Ryan kind of found their stride, and
then DeAndre and then Emmett, and so I really wish
we could have found all that throughout training camp.
Speaker 7 (01:18:53):
We just didn't.
Speaker 6 (01:18:54):
I think they've grown better together and nobody wants to
drop the ball, Okay, I mean nobody goes out there
and breaks the huddle and says, hey, I'm gonna drop
this ball, and I feel good about it. They're all
trying really hard. I think there's some fundamental things we
can keep working on with them, but I think it's
also them trusting their ability to go out and do
it and do it in critical moments. And again, it's
(01:19:16):
not all the receivers. You know, there's tight ends that
got to make plays, there's runners that got to make plays.
But at the end of the day, this group's a
talented group. Like I said, I think the rapport and
continuity with Arch continues to get better, and their playmaking
has improved. Now there's a level of consistency of doing that.
And like I said, that's why we're never a finished
(01:19:36):
product in season, right. We always have to continually try
to develop our players to improve throughout the season.
Speaker 7 (01:19:41):
And the receivers are no different for us.
Speaker 1 (01:19:42):
All Right, we talked earlier, and he talked earlier about
the penalties, and he was asked, is he surprised at
this late juncture of the season that there are still
mistakes and penalties still happening.
Speaker 6 (01:19:54):
I think, like I said, seasons, as they go, you
ride the wave of where your issues are. I don't,
like I said, I don't think anybody is a finished
perfect product even right now, and we're all trying to
get better. You know, we were playing without Michael Taff
for a couple of weeks, we didn't play with Jelawnie
the week before.
Speaker 7 (01:20:13):
It gets knocked out the first drive of the game.
Now they're back in the.
Speaker 6 (01:20:16):
Game, and so trusting that communication is one of the
key components to play in really good pass defense, and
the lack of that was the issue where we have
to get back to that. I don't think that's a
really hard fix for us. I think that's something that
we can get fixed and fixed fairly quickly. I wish
we could have done it in game. We just couldn't
quite get it right. But again, there's gonna be some issues.
(01:20:40):
We didn't fit a couple of runs that we should
have been fitting way better than we did. And so
there's things defensively that we can improve upon and improve
quickly upon. And we're gonna need to because Arkansas is
going to challenge us that way, all right.
Speaker 1 (01:20:52):
Next he was asked about the newer members of his
coaching staff on the defensive side, in the back end,
in other words, linebackers and secondary.
Speaker 6 (01:21:00):
Yeah, those guys are all really good coaches. You know,
it's great having coach a keenan staff. I think Mark
mark Orfe is a rising star. Kenoto Hudson was with
us last year as an analyst and now he's a
full time guy. So we're fortunate to have those guys
on staff doing the job that they do.
Speaker 2 (01:21:15):
Okay. Next up, Sark was.
Speaker 1 (01:21:20):
Asked about getting his getting Justice Terry more involved. You
may have noticed Justice Terry number fifteen, the freshman. He
got out there. I think he was out there for
like seven snaps and made four tackles, and you know,
Sark was asked about him and possibly getting him more involved.
Speaker 6 (01:21:38):
Really proud of Justice, you know he has he has
really come on, you know, from where he was a
couple of months ago to where he is today. It's
a credit to his work ethic. I think it's a
credit to coach Baker and the work that they're putting in.
I think it was great for Justice. He spends a
lot of time even now periodically throughout the week on
(01:21:58):
scout team. So he's going DJ Campbell, he's going against
Trevor Gooseby. I think that has helped his development as well.
But but he man, he's surely coming on, and I'm
very proud of him.
Speaker 10 (01:22:09):
That.
Speaker 6 (01:22:09):
Again, here's a guy a month ago could have just
waved the white flag and said, well, I'll wait.
Speaker 7 (01:22:13):
Till next year.
Speaker 6 (01:22:14):
But he's continued to work at his craft and he's
getting better and he's a guy who is going to
continue to earn more playing time.
Speaker 2 (01:22:20):
All right.
Speaker 1 (01:22:22):
The last two games for Texas, of course, featured the
struggle in the fourth quarter against Vanderbilt and then the
loss in the fourth quarter here, so that fourth quarter thing.
He was asked if there are any commonalities between the two.
Speaker 7 (01:22:34):
No, I think there's ways we can address that. To
your point that that we can.
Speaker 6 (01:22:38):
We look at some things, especially on Tuesday and Wednesday
in practice kind of different scenarios, you know, so it's
hard to it's hard to mirror them.
Speaker 7 (01:22:47):
At the end of the day.
Speaker 6 (01:22:49):
I think it's about mental intensity and focus and and
you know, focusing on the next play and not getting
caught up in the scoreboard and what might happen if
if that, And that's how distraction kicks in, and that's
how you missed that communication, or you don't hear that call,
or you're not aware of the situation that you're in.
And so we got to improve upon that, and we
(01:23:10):
got to do a great job of coaches of reiterating
that and driving that point home. So it's hard for
me to say there's parallels there. They're just different games. Now,
the results very similar, the score is very similar, but
you know, different different situations if you will.
Speaker 1 (01:23:26):
All right, Next, Sark was asked about the secondary and
how they've been attacked and is there a way to
try to bolster things to help the secondary.
Speaker 6 (01:23:36):
Actually, the first one is explosive pass plays. You know,
we were so good and have been historically so good
at least the past couple of years of not giving
up the expo explosive plays. And I think that to
me when you when you see that yardage in passing,
the explosive pass plays are something that we've got to
(01:23:56):
get that number back down. And explosive passes don't always
her where they throw it over your head. Now we've
had a couple of those, but to me, it's more
about our ability to get people on the ground when
they get completions. And so when you start talking about
playing in space, you start talking about leveraging, and when
you're tackling, we start talking about populating the ball. We
(01:24:17):
start talking about using proper angles when you have a
second tackler to force the cutback, or.
Speaker 7 (01:24:22):
Using the sidelines.
Speaker 6 (01:24:23):
Those are things that we've got to improve upon because
I think that's where a lot of the explosives have
come from. People are going to complete passes like that's football, right,
but we got to make sure we get them on
the ground.
Speaker 7 (01:24:33):
And along with that, our communication.
Speaker 6 (01:24:36):
Has got to be better so that we're in the
right spots when they do complete balls, that we can
leverage the ball and get people on the ground.
Speaker 1 (01:24:42):
Okay, And next he was asked about his rotation at
corner and the fact that he's had in the league
Muhammad and Jaylen Gilbo back there, Warren Roverson and Kobe
Black have gotten out there, and then also Kate Phillips
has been out there in some key plays and with
(01:25:02):
the amount of injuries that have happened, sarg was asked
does he prefers some sort of rotation opposite Manny Muhammad
or how does that all work?
Speaker 6 (01:25:12):
Well, I think that was something you know, from a
couple of weeks ago, we said we were going to
continually look at guys and try to develop some of
these guys. And like, I was really proud of Kaid
on some plays, and there were some growing pains for
Cade Saturday night. You know, they throw a hitcher out
in front of him at the end of the first
quarter and he makes a tackle.
Speaker 7 (01:25:27):
It's about a gain of six yards.
Speaker 6 (01:25:29):
The very next play to start the second quarter, they
tried him on a double move, a hitch and go,
and he stayed on top.
Speaker 7 (01:25:35):
He defended it really well.
Speaker 6 (01:25:37):
Then the quarterback resets and hits branch and it's about
a gain of forty down to our six. And then
on third down they run the slant return on him,
and he has outside leverage and he has help inside
with Jilani. And that's just the experience of third and five,
of knowing where your help is and be able to
sit on that top shoulder and it's probably a dead
play there. So it's hard to get that experience without
(01:25:59):
actually doing it. And so I think there's some growth
there for him. Obviously, Jalen's been playing a lot. We've
been trying to play warn especially on third down, of
getting him experience in there. So because you never know,
knock on wood, Benny, you know, stubs, his toe, gets
an ankle, whatever it is, You're gonna need multiple guys
that are gonna have to go in there critical moments.
Speaker 7 (01:26:18):
And so if we can get some valuable.
Speaker 6 (01:26:20):
Experience for some guys right now, getting eight, ten, twelve
snaps a game, I think that's beneficial for us, all right.
Speaker 1 (01:26:25):
And then finally this Saturday, they'll do a campus salute
to Michael hoff Now, longtime Long Wornon fans know what
Michael Huff meant to the program. A team captain on
the two thousand and five National Championship team, the Thorpe
Award winner, great player. Then went in the NFL and
spent a lot of years in the NFL with the Raiders,
(01:26:48):
retired from pro football, came back and has been in
a couple of different roles with the Long Worn Football
program as special assistant and some of the other things
as well. He's done a great job for that and
he's going into the College Football Hall of fame.
Speaker 2 (01:27:04):
So Sarcus asked what Michael Huff has meant to his program.
Speaker 6 (01:27:08):
Michael Huff has been phenomenal since the day I arrived.
What he's meant to the program? To me, he's such
a great conduit between the program today and a lot
of the ex players from before and bringing them back.
He's a great resource for our current players, a sounding
board for those guys. So for him to be honored
(01:27:29):
Saturday is just an awesome tribute. Should again be part
of just a really special day at DKR.
Speaker 1 (01:27:35):
All right, So we'll looking forward to that, all right.
Up next, we will have some pro football news and
a big note about Texas longword basketball when we continue
on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone in the
iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 5 (01:27:50):
Really, lovers, don't they tell you down?
Speaker 3 (01:27:56):
Like you.
Speaker 1 (01:28:03):
To continuing on this Monday. You're on thirteen under the Zone,
like I said, give you making note of the seventy
would have been the eighty seventh birthday of Gordon Lightfoot Day.
So this song Rainy Day People, which was a megad
as well. It's just it's just one of those ballads
that he did about people or just kind of deal
(01:28:25):
with the difficulties of life and they get it and
they understand and is lou ball. So there's like several
of his catalog or songs like that, and people identified
with a lot of.
Speaker 4 (01:28:38):
That, just like, hey, you know, I've got a rainy
day person in my life.
Speaker 1 (01:28:42):
Yeah, we all have had those, right.
Speaker 3 (01:28:45):
I think this type of little guitar is what I
would think of if you brought up Gordon Lightfoot before
we listen to these cuts today.
Speaker 1 (01:28:52):
Yeah, because he was a balladeer, that's what he what
he was. I mean, he's he had some other hits,
but none of them are like hard rock and hard driving,
so they're just you know, good ballads that people would
understand about love. He connected with people really really well.
And what he did with the Reck of the Edmond
(01:29:13):
Fitzgerald was amazing, that song about that maritime disaster that
happened fifty years ago last week. So anyway, we were
marking the occasion there of the great Gordon life. But
all right, I told you big news, definite big news
today for Long Worn Basketball signing day happened the other
(01:29:37):
day for Texas and the Long Wrorn's added three players
and in fact, Sean Miller was asked at his press
conference about the three sinees, he wasn't asked about this
fourth guy because he had not yet committed, let alone signed.
The fourth guy today committed. That fourth guy is Austin Gooseby.
(01:30:01):
If the name sounds familiar, he's the brother of Trevor Gooseby,
the left tackle. But it wasn't as simple as Austin Gooseby, Oh,
my brother's there, I'm going to go there.
Speaker 3 (01:30:11):
No.
Speaker 1 (01:30:12):
No, it was down to Texas and Duke Oh, and
Duke Curly wanted him, and and I had been told
that it was going to it was going to come
to the wire, which it did, and that it would
(01:30:32):
be very very close, but that the coaching staff felt
confident that that he may ultimately wind up as a
long run and now he will.
Speaker 4 (01:30:41):
Be sounds like Byu and Baylor were the others in
the mix.
Speaker 1 (01:30:44):
Yeah, but but realistically speaking, they said, it pretty much
came down to Texas and Duke, and he's the eighteenth
rank player in the country and so it's uh, he's
a combo guard and.
Speaker 2 (01:31:01):
A big big get for Sean Miller's program, So congrats
on that.
Speaker 1 (01:31:07):
So anyway, he committed today, what did he did he
do it on YouTube with his brother or something?
Speaker 3 (01:31:12):
He was on CBS Sports College Basketball channel YouTube. Yep,
and it's so funny. His brother who talked to some
of the media earlier on today, Yep. He was asked,
you know, will you will you be? You know, he
was on his way to go to his brother's commitment
announcement exactly. He was like, so have you been in
(01:31:33):
touch with him about it? You know, as he has
he planned a special outfit for it. He goes, I
just hope he doesn't give it away with his outfit
before he makes the announcement.
Speaker 1 (01:31:41):
Okay, he didn't.
Speaker 2 (01:31:42):
You saw it?
Speaker 1 (01:31:43):
If anything, if you saw his outfit, you might have
thought he might have been committed to either be why
you were do because it was like dark blue, but
or is it black because he plays for Melissa and
their colors are black and red.
Speaker 4 (01:31:54):
Yeah, it was a Melissa zip up.
Speaker 1 (01:31:55):
It looked like okay, all right, so that's that's a
great get for Sean Miller's program.
Speaker 3 (01:32:02):
And Trevor war Baige and Neutral Beige didn't give it
away either.
Speaker 1 (01:32:04):
Okay, all right, that's good. It's good to hear that.
On the pro football front, we haven't mentioned that much
about the Cowboys game tonight, but.
Speaker 2 (01:32:18):
Probably just as well.
Speaker 3 (01:32:20):
With a win tonight, Craig, the Cowboys are in the
playoff six percent of simulations.
Speaker 4 (01:32:25):
With a loss that drops to one percent.
Speaker 2 (01:32:29):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (01:32:31):
Yeah, so big matchup for them tonight against a team
they should be able to beat. The Raiders are not good.
The game is in Vegas, but it's it's a very
winnable game for this Cowboys team, should be.
Speaker 3 (01:32:45):
Raiders have had trouble pretty much in all, they haven't
played a lot of complimentary football this year.
Speaker 4 (01:32:50):
The Raiders will put it that way.
Speaker 2 (01:32:52):
Yeah right.
Speaker 1 (01:32:54):
Other Pro football news, Jamar Chase, the Bengals wide receiver
pay attention, those of you have him on your fantasy teams,
suspended one game without pay for spitting on Jayalen Ramsey
of the Steelers yesterday.
Speaker 4 (01:33:07):
So Ramsey wins round two in that matchup?
Speaker 1 (01:33:09):
Yeah right now. Chase is appealing the suspension, and I
think what his case is. Did you see the video
of it?
Speaker 3 (01:33:19):
No?
Speaker 1 (01:33:19):
I haven't. Actually, Okay, it's not like what happened in
the Eagles Cowboys game, which was pretty blatant.
Speaker 7 (01:33:25):
Right this one.
Speaker 1 (01:33:29):
Chase can make the case that it was a heated
conversation or an intense conversation, and maybe the fluids of
expectoration just happened to pop out that it wasn't blatant,
leaned in and spit, but.
Speaker 2 (01:33:50):
You see it come out.
Speaker 4 (01:33:51):
So and then you see Ramsey retally in Yep, yep, exactly.
Speaker 3 (01:33:55):
This after Chase had eighteen catches against the Steelers in
a game that it was a Thursday night football the
ice the Icy Hot Bowl, Flacko versus Rogers.
Speaker 2 (01:34:04):
Right, all right, so this is interesting.
Speaker 1 (01:34:06):
This appeal is going to be heard and ruled upon
by one of three hearing officers jointly appointed by the
NFL and the Players Association. Do you know who these uh,
these hearing officers are?
Speaker 3 (01:34:24):
Have you seen I'm gonna get Okay, is one of
them like Berfect or something?
Speaker 7 (01:34:29):
No?
Speaker 1 (01:34:29):
No, no, it's current players, I mean, not not current players,
guys who did excel but are now kind of in
this position.
Speaker 2 (01:34:36):
With the NFL.
Speaker 3 (01:34:38):
Okay, all right, this, I'm sure these players will have
nothing that will cause bias here.
Speaker 1 (01:34:44):
Well, one of them is Derek Brooks. Former players. They're
not current players.
Speaker 4 (01:34:48):
Yeah that's all I mentioned.
Speaker 1 (01:34:49):
I thought he retire, Yeah right, but he's not part
of this.
Speaker 4 (01:34:52):
He shouldn't be.
Speaker 1 (01:34:52):
No, No, Derek Brooks, Ramon Foster and Jordy Nelson. Oh
so they will one of those three will hear it.
If the suspension is upheld, he would miss their game
against the Patriots coming up.
Speaker 3 (01:35:10):
So I want to see him go up against Christian Gonzales,
one of the bright young corners in the league.
Speaker 2 (01:35:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:35:16):
In case you're wondering what missing one game would cost
Jamar Chase Memory just did a new contract recently. One
game four hundred and forty eight three hundred and thirty
three dollars one game plus a fifty eight eight hundred
twenty three dollars per game active bonus. He would be forfeiting,
(01:35:38):
So just being on the active roster gets a bonus.
Speaker 4 (01:35:40):
At half a million dollars at stake here.
Speaker 1 (01:35:42):
Yeah, and the league sided the section of the rule
book that applies to quote any act that is contrary
to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship. But again, I
think it's a little less blatant than the Jalen Carter
Dak Prescott thing. I don't think it's quite as obvious.
But you can see this bit come out, So we'll
(01:36:03):
see about that.
Speaker 3 (01:36:06):
Yeah, Bengals, I think are their Their playoff ship has sunk.
Speaker 1 (01:36:10):
Yeah, I mean they're out of it anyway right now
at three and seven. Here's here's a good question. There
are one, two, two nine and two teams and uh one, two,
(01:36:32):
two eight and two teams, three, three, three eight and
two teams? Excuse me, two nine and two's three eight
and twos. Who's the best of the bunch right now?
Speaker 3 (01:36:41):
I mean, I don't want to be blinded by recency bias.
We just watched the Eagles defense completely shut down the
Packers and the Lions two nights in a row.
Speaker 2 (01:36:57):
Yeah, the suffocated them.
Speaker 3 (01:37:00):
And I think the second best team of the bunch
of the Rams, I'm going Eagles one, Rams two.
Speaker 1 (01:37:06):
I would probably go with you on number one on
the Eagles. I think the second best team is New England.
I think the Patriots a right. I looked at the
numbers between these The Patriots has scored a lot more
points than the Eagles.
Speaker 3 (01:37:18):
How about their schedule though, Yeah, and New england schedule
has been easy.
Speaker 1 (01:37:22):
Yeah, but they've only allowed two hundred and six points.
They're two losses the Raiders and the season opener and
to the Steelers in Week three. Uh, Panthers aren't chop Liver.
They're six and five. They're in the race, right. They
beat the Bills.
Speaker 4 (01:37:39):
That was a great win.
Speaker 3 (01:37:40):
Yeah, the Bills have been inconsistent, but they went to
Buffalo and beat them.
Speaker 1 (01:37:44):
They beat the Bucks another great yeah, but I get
your point. They've also beaten the Jets, They've beaten the Browns.
Speaker 4 (01:37:52):
I'm not dropping them outside the top five.
Speaker 1 (01:37:54):
Yeah, They're just not in my top two yet.
Speaker 2 (01:37:56):
I got you, Okay.
Speaker 1 (01:37:58):
So I think that the Rams at times look great
and at times of just well. As a Rams fan,
it scares the daylights out of me. But I mean
the offense can just disappear at times. Defense really holds
it together with the pressure they get from the pass
rush at the front seven.
Speaker 2 (01:38:16):
That's the biggest part, because the secondary can be had.
Speaker 4 (01:38:19):
Yeah, you can mask it though.
Speaker 1 (01:38:21):
Yeah, so they you know, And they wound up getting
three interceptions yesterday of Sam Darnold, clearly Donald's worst game
of the season at quarterback, but the Rams still had to.
Speaker 2 (01:38:33):
Hold their breath.
Speaker 1 (01:38:34):
They're on the Jason Meyer sixty one yard field goal
that would have won it for him. He have be
missed to the right, so it's only a one game
lead off that first time the season the Rams have
been in first place in their division. The Colts right
in two. I think they look pretty solid. The Broncos
are nine and two. Maybe they're the best team. They
only allowed one hundred ninety two points this year. Maybe
(01:38:57):
they're the best team.
Speaker 3 (01:38:58):
Impressed by their defense this week. I thought it was
a great bounce back for the Bronco defense. Not that
they had a horrible game to bounce back from, but
I thought they were really impressive against Casey.
Speaker 1 (01:39:08):
If I had to ask you right now, are the
Chiefs going to make the playoffs or not? You would
say yes, Okay.
Speaker 4 (01:39:14):
I don't trust the Chargers or Jags to stay in
those spots.
Speaker 1 (01:39:18):
Okay, all right, And the Ravens, you know it won't
be able to get passing. Or the Texans they're all
five and five.
Speaker 4 (01:39:24):
We could stick a fork in the Ravens. The Texans
have a shot.
Speaker 2 (01:39:28):
Okay, Ravens have won four in a row, and you're
sticking a fork in.
Speaker 1 (01:39:31):
I don't.
Speaker 3 (01:39:32):
I don't see it, Craig, I don't. I'm not impressed
by the Ravens in the slightest.
Speaker 1 (01:39:36):
They've beaten the Bears, the Dolphins, the Vices.
Speaker 4 (01:39:39):
I forgot.
Speaker 3 (01:39:40):
I'm not going to stick a fork in the forks
back out. Here's why they played the Steelers twice. Yeah,
I forgot. They control their destiny.
Speaker 2 (01:39:47):
Yeah yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:39:48):
Do I think they're going to win those games, No,
but they can absolutely.
Speaker 1 (01:39:52):
Well, here's their here's their closing schedule, Bengals, like we
said this week. Then then the first of two of
the Steelers, the second of two of the Bengals, big
game against the Patriots just before Christmas. Then they go
to Green Bay, then they close at Pittsburgh.
Speaker 4 (01:40:10):
It's a tough schedule, it is.
Speaker 3 (01:40:12):
And Lamar's not running like his normal self, and their
defense has yet to stop a good offense this season.
Speaker 1 (01:40:18):
Yeah, and then you ask about the Chiefs, Well, here
are the Chiefs at five and five. Mahomes after the
game said, hey, our goal is to get in the playoffs.
We know it's gonna be tough to try to win
the division. Winning the division. At this point, you're four back.
That's not gonna happen. Here's what they have left. Big
game of the Colts this week at Arrawhead, huge kind
of a musk Winford. Then they go to Arlington to
(01:40:40):
play the Cowboys on Thanksgiving. Then they have the Texans
on a Sunday night. Then they play the Chargers at home.
Speaker 4 (01:40:48):
Where's that game? Where's that Texans game?
Speaker 2 (01:40:51):
Kansas City?
Speaker 4 (01:40:52):
Okay?
Speaker 1 (01:40:52):
Then they go then they have the Chargers at home,
they go to Tennessee, they have the Broncos at home,
and then they finish in Vegas. So I think they
can get there, but they're going to have to win
some of those tougher games as well as the ones
we count on them to win.
Speaker 2 (01:41:06):
Probably.
Speaker 1 (01:41:06):
All right, We'll be back to wrap up today's edition
of the program on thirteen Under the Zone.
