Fame broadcaster Craig Way. Wednesday showcontinues here from our iHeart Studios in Austin,

(00:26):
Texas. Glad to have you withus. Cameron Parker alongside Andrew Simmel
as we continue to fill in forCraig Way, who will be back with
us next Monday, July eighth. Also, real quick of note, we
will not have a Craig Wait Showon Tuesday because the Round Rock Express will
be an Action Actually Express, endingServile Land their first ever shutout of the

(00:51):
season last night at the Dell Diamond. Our one continues here and we're going
to talk some Texas football. Withjust fifty nine days away until the season
starts, some really fun games onthe Texas schedule, both conference play and
non conference. Of course, theystart the year against Colorado State, then

(01:14):
go up the n Arbor the defendingnational champions. But it's gonna be a
Michigan Wolverine team that'll look pretty different, mostly because well brand new coaching staff
with John Harball going back or JimHarball going back to the NFL taking the
head coaching job. With the LosAngeles Chargers, and also a handful of

(01:36):
their key players moving on drafted, including JJ McCarthy their quarterback. Of course,
Andrew Simmo is very ecstatic to haveleading his Minnesota Viking. Is that
correct, right? Oh yeah, dude, I'm so over the moon about
JJ McCarthy. Oh boy. Sowithout McCarthy, Michigan goes into the season

(01:59):
a lot of questions, not justhead coaching, but also replacing key starters
on the defensive line, secondary linebackers, but also their signal caller and kind
of just like Alabama's against Alabama thislast season when Texas went down to the
Bryant Denny. Of course, youknow Jyaln Milroe had been there the year
before, but Bryce Young was thestarter the season before Texas came to Alabama,

(02:23):
and so they kind of entered thatyear with a quarterback battle, a
three way quarterback battle, with Milrollthe starter for the first two games.
He was then bench the next weekagainst South Florida and ultimately became the starter
a few games after that and ledthem to the College Football Playoff. So
Michigan kind of in the same situation. No more JJ McCarthy, So they're

(02:46):
going through their own quarterback battle ofthemselves with alex Orgy, Jacks Tuttle,
Jack Tuttle, and Davis Warring Warrenthe three quarterbacks who are competing for the
quarterback job under for Michigan. SoOrgie is a junior quarterback from Stage Texas

(03:07):
six games is last season for Michigan, but did not throw a single pass.
Was mostly used in a wildcat role, so kind of similar to Jillen
Milroll. But Jillen Milroll can throwa football, can throw the deep ball,
so Milroll more of a proven passerthan Orgie was during his last couple

(03:28):
of years at Michigan. So Michigansays they're going to use him in some
sort of role this offense, nomatter what that was coming from their offensive
coordinator Kurt Campbell. But he's onlythrown one completion during his time in Ann
Arbor for five yards. That's it. Everything else has been in the wildcat
as a quarterback runner. And theother guy in this battle is Tuttle,

(03:54):
who has been in the college footballfor Ready for This Andrew seven years.
Come on, get a job,get a job. Tuttle is part of
the same quarterback class as get Readyfor this, Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields,
Cameron Rising we talked about yesterday,Casey Thompson, who's also still playing

(04:16):
college football, and Michael Pennix junior. He's been at Utah, he's been
at Indiana. During his short Wolverinecareer so far, he's thrown more passes
than Orgie. He's fifteen to seventeenwith one touchdown in four years at Indiana,
also limited action. He threw fornine hundred one yards, five touchdowns,

(04:40):
six interceptions, had an injury kindof into his twenty twenty two campaign.
Does not have the same athletic traitsas Orgie does, but more of
an under center type of quarterback. So you have those two guys in the
third quarterback that we might see againstTech from the Michigan Wolverines is Davis Warren

(05:03):
and Warren and also does not havethat much action during his college career.
It was a twenty twenty one recruitso on He's thrown fourteen passes in his
career for Michigan one interception, andthere's also a couple other younger prospects down
the line. But for a Texasteam that use their win against Alabama last

(05:28):
year Andrew to catapult them into thenational championship conversation. And it was against
the Alabama team that obviously was notone of Nick Saban's best, even though
they did win the SEC Championship againstGeorgia. And we're, you know,
possibly a few plays away from knockingoff Michigan and facing Washington in the National

(05:49):
Championship. But I see a lotof similarities here between last year's Alabama's team
and the one that Texas will seein ann Arbor in Week two. See
I'm gonna zag on you. Ithink this is not Alabama of last year.
Cam. I know Michigan's coming offa national championship, but when you
lose your head coach and your startingquarterback, you're essentially losing the two most

(06:10):
important things for your team. SoI look at it too, Michigan not
having a for sure week one starterthat there's even a question if you have
two quarterbacks, Cam, you don'thave any. It's never worked, having
a platoon system and the idea thatthey're going to run out a wildcat quarterback
in some offenses and a more traditionalquarterback than others. History tells us that

(06:31):
is a sign of an offensive coordinatorwho's just throwing stuff against the wall seeing
what it'll stick. So look,if textasastic, this game seriously clearly going
to the big House. I amnot nearly as worried about this game as
I was against Alabama a year ago. Oh I agree, I agree.
I did not mean to say thephrase. It as the fact that they're
going to be just as good asAlabama. More so that I think Texas

(06:55):
will go into this game. Ithink they will be the favorite of the
time, of the betting lines rolearound the week before, and I think
they should dispatch Ann Arbor. Butit's going to be a very tough road
environment, but definitely won't be asgood of a Michigan team as they've been
in the year's past. And kindof surprised that Michigan was not able to
secure a better transfer quarterback because goingin the Week one, none of those

(07:18):
guys jump out to me as quarterbacksthat could lead Michigan back to a Big
Ten championship, especially with the classthe Iowa States, Rich Ohio States returning
in Will Howard, in all thetalent that Ryan Dada added, plus the
additions of Oregon in USC It's goingto be tough for Michigan to get back
to where they were in the BigTen. A twelve team playoff does help.

(07:40):
But I think and closer we getto this game, the more confident
I feel in Texas in beating Michigan. The one thing I will agree with
you on the way that Texas beatAlabama last year that put them into the
national conversation. If Texas is thefavorite going into the Big House and does
win by let's say ten points,we'll just make it a round up.

(08:00):
They're going to be top of thelist, top three team going into Week
two or the following week after that, I guess it would be what we
three. So I feel like thisis the type of game nationally televised.
You beat Michigan, voters across thecountry are going to be like, oh,
yeah, no, that's a toptwo, top three team in the
country. For sure. It candefinitely turn into that Texas takes care of

(08:24):
business in the Big House. Let'sstick with the Texas football here. Talk
a little defensive line, of course, replacing the fre sweat in Byron Murphy
this past season. Barron Murphy afirst round draft pick by the Seattle Seahawks,
and even the year before that hadto replace KeAndre Koburn in Maro Ojamo,
two great defensive tackles and then twomore of this past season that Texas

(08:48):
las. I always think back tothe Kansas State game, the way that
Murphy in sweat, and I knowColton Vasek was in there as well,
but the way that Murphy in Sweatjust took over in that over time period
against Kansas State to keep their seasonalive. Incredible, incredible performance. So
now Sarca tasked with rebuilding the defensiveline. He's done a great job addressing

(09:11):
the concerns at edge. We sawTexas not being able to get really any
pressure off the edges against Washington inthe College Football and playoff, and Sark
went to work. Tray More fromUTSA going to be a big part in
that. Of course, Colin Simmons, the Frenchman from Duncanville, will have

(09:31):
a big role also, the continueddevelopment possibly of Vernon Broughton and Baron Surrell.
But what about inside the trenches. It looked like for a moment it
was just going to be Alfred Collinsin Vernon Broughton in the defensive in the
in the tackle spots. Well,Sark went out and really attacked the portal.
Bill Norton, the graduate transfer fromArizona who likely will be a starter.

(09:54):
Tsavella, also a senior transfer, and also Jermaine Low, the graduate
transfer from Louisville. So three keytransfers coming in austle of Alex January from
Duncanville, dre Bledsoe, Aaron Bryant, and then Sadir Mitchell, the red
shirt freshman from New Jersey where therewas possible talks of him entering the portal

(10:16):
stuck around. So Sark tasked withbuilding rebuilding this defensive line, and it
was asked about it by Greg McClorylast week on his show on ESPN.
Yeah, I think one thing thatwas interesting about that, you know,
people forget our first two years here, Bira Murphy and to and Andre Sweat
never started a game, right. It was Cadre Coburn and Moro Ojamo,

(10:39):
and then those two guys got drafted, and then in came Murphy and Sweat
and talked about two guys seasoned, the opportunity last year of playing a significant
significant snaps and becoming starters and doingthose things that it's kind of ready for
that next wave I mean, Icouldn't be more excited than I am about
Alfred Collins. I think this guy'spulled. He's for a great senior season.

(11:01):
I love the experience that a VernonBroughton brings to us, But to
your point, I also love wheresome of these younger players are at,
whether it's an Aaron Bryant, aJerre Bledsoe. We signed a couple of
really nice players in alex January MelvinHills that that we're looking forward to them.
But I also I go back toman, We've got to have enough
debt for what the physicality that theSEC is going to impose us with uh

(11:26):
And that's how you go and yousign three veteran players out of the portal,
and we were able to do thatthis fall and getting you know,
Bill Norton and Tia Savea from Arizona, guys who've played a lot of football
there, big physical players, andthen then getting to Jermaine lelay from from
Louisville. Now we've we've kind ofgot a veteran group who's played a lot

(11:48):
of football at a high level onsuccessful teams and success successful defenses. But
also knowing I've got some young playersthat are gonna have opportunities to step in.
And so again I'm thinking big pictureon a lot of this. I'm
thinking about, you know, whenyou're playing in December and January and having
to sustain, you know, wheninjuries occur, because football is the sport

(12:09):
that it is, and to thinkthat we're just going to come out of
this thing unscathed is probably unrealistic. And so I want to make sure that
I'm putting our team in the bestposition to persevere and to be at its
best when our best is needed, you know, Thanksgiving weekend and beyond.
Yeah, DT's a position where whenyou look at the recruiting rankings, it's
one you don't want to get toocaught up in. Okay, what star

(12:33):
are they? You know how wherethey ranked in the two four seven Composite
Murphy and Sweat three stars and bythe time they left campus they were looked
at as five star prospects. Andthat's what Texas is trying to do,
and that's probably the way recruiting isgoing to work, because defensive tackle is
not a position that you see alot in the transfer portal, and when

(12:56):
you do, there's going to bea bidding war, and we saw that
with the kid who committed to Oklahomaover Texas. Forgot his name on the
top of his head, but thatcame down to just crazy anil numbers that
Oklahoma was willing to offer. Andthat's what you're going to happen when you
have a defensive tackle in the portal, if you're trying to fill that need.
Unfortunately for Texas, they picked upthree transfers on the defensive line to

(13:18):
help rel replace Brian Murphy into andAndre Sweat. We'll continue more Texas football
talk throughout the show. Still somemore stuff from Sark on the secondary,
on being physical, on the growthof Quinn yours. But up next a
Wednesday edition of Inconceivable. That's upnext year on The Craigway Show.
