If you can wager on it.We're talking about it. It's the gambling.
Welcome to the Divide with Mike andCorey, two diehard baseball fans who
don't agree on anything. Which sidewill you check them to? The device?
Is the new vide Mike and Coreyput your boy Todd Frazier. Hey,
what fulp. This is Cliff Floyd. You can catch me on the
(00:22):
Divide. You can catch me onthe Divide on Fox Sports The Gambler.
Hopefully our disagreement one day, bringus all together. So so so,
Cordy, I own our disagreement.Bring up I do divide and here we
(00:44):
are Divide Live, Fox Sports TheGambler one of two, five Philly one,
four and one. Try and checkus out on the iHeartRadio app because
we are in podcast form as well. Or we do stuff like not take
breaks and curse dual podcast for him. We have the clean version from Fox
and then that's your version, rightverson I feel version when they were winning
version like DVDs and you'd buy aDVD and it was like extended cut plus
(01:07):
you know, four hours of bonusfilm and it was like dud. The
movie was ninety minutes long. Howdo you have four hours? Do you
ever watch any of the bones?Never? Yeah, or like the what
they called the director's cut or thedirector's commentary where he's like the director literally
talks over the scene like it's ChanningTatum was like, I should do this
with my shirt off, and wewere like yes, and so that's how
(01:29):
we decided to do it. It'sjust ridiculous. It's just never. Never
did I ever watch anything but themovie, And even like I would be
a sucker for like oh with neverbefore seeing you know, seeing scenes or
whatever they called it, like, and I would watch the movie and I
wouldn't have no idea which ones wereadded, even like when you're at Universal
and they have the director like explainthe scene or whatever, like when you
(01:51):
go to ET or whatever, anyof those like beyond backlot tours, Like
I'm was like, this is corny. I don't set the scene for me.
You know, yeah, I belike, yo, I did some
epic stuff. Check it out hereyou go, you know, like that's
about it. Like they're like, you, we wanted to paint Et as
a human, So what we didwas have them around flowers, Like no,
(02:13):
I don't want to hear any ofthat. I just want I want
action, NonStop action, right.I want to fast and furious sixty seven,
and I want a guy to explainit to me in the most professional
way possible. Oh, let's getinto it. Baseball news this week,
probably one of the heaviest news isthat John Sterling, Yankee radio announcer,
(02:38):
is retiring partly or mainly, Ishould say, due to health concerns.
Bob not bobscuse me. John.John is eighty five years young and shocked
the yank talking about news stuff forthe New York Yankees. Apparently, ESPN
is working on an eight part documentaryseries titled Yankees Ye famous for that call,
(03:05):
along with a lot a lot more. I Uh, it's sad,
it is. I'm trying not tobe an insensitive jerk here. This dude's
eighty five years old. We've beenfor me and you. You can bet
the ranchie on Franchie. Sorry,I got tons of we have been you
and I have been personally joking abouthow old he is and how long he
(03:28):
was doing this way and Susan andSusan for for how many years now?
Yeah, So when it's funny becausethey not Susan. First of all,
Susan. For those of you thathaven't read anything, Susan Waldman is shocked.
Yeah, sitting next to him, eighty five years old. They never
talked podcast for thirty six years.Like some of these nights where you just
(03:50):
walk out, like you leave moneyat the nightstand, you just walk out
to the studio, leave me toproduce all this now, I'm just kidding.
It would be great. Like ifone day you've retired and I was
like, I had no idea,Like it's like showed up to the stadium
studio and you're like, you couldbet to fointy. It's just he Look,
(04:13):
he's called over five thousand regular seasongames, two hundred and eleven postseason
games. Uh, five thousand andsixty consecutive games, like never missing every
yet that for Derek Jeter, everyinning of Marianna Rivera, like he's been
there for it all. He's gonnabe honored this weekend at when they play
the Rais. So it's it's it'sit's it's sad, but at the same
(04:39):
time it's a little predictable. Imean, come on, John, in
which I enjoy what you got leftin your life and relax a little bit.
Do you have like a favorite call? Uh? A text message from
tshera. It doesn't even make sensethat it's corny, but yeah, I
did like that one. Yeah, that got a lot of legs for how
corny it was. This is myfavorite. Here's a two swing on right.
(05:01):
That ball is hot. Let usfar us gone. Second deck?
Yeah, yeah, talk probably thebest second he said, second deck,
by the way, second deck secondfor those kiddies at home. But it's
so great. I mean we Iwe wish him the best. Don't don't
(05:23):
think we're these mean people. Wewe wish him the best. We hope
his health has a turn for thebetter and they can enjoy a lot of
things. But it's funny kind ofgetting on these different Yankee uh news outlets
and a lot of the Yankee fanslike, oh no, I can't believe
it. It's like these are thesame Yankees. Like for those who don't
know, Bob Shepherd was one ofthe in stadium announcers we also called like
(05:46):
the voice of God. He hada great voice, held announced every batter.
He was ninety nine years old whenhe died, right, and people
were like, oh no, Bob, that was almost a hundred. Like
he was probably like, now badnot me. Please take now, let's
take Bob shepperd out to the shed. No, I'm just kidding, terrible,
(06:09):
but no, it's there. Itkind of shocked everybody a little bit.
I mean, he missed a fewgames and a few he missed like
thirty some odd actually more than that, No, about twenty some odd games
last year due to health concerns. So John, you're too old. You
shouldn't be working. You should beconcentrating on your health. And you,
I'm pretty sure you have a freepass to see any Yankee game you want,
So just enjoy yourself, and Susan, don't hesitate to join your partner.
(06:35):
But look like two things I noticedin Yes Network and a few other
Yankee outlets. They kept saying,he's the radio voice of the Yankees.
So I feel like Michael ka waslike, remember there's another voice over here.
You know what I mean? Heis the voice of the Yankees.
Bob Shepper was. John Sterling was. So if they were both still to
(07:00):
talking about that, you could arguethat I like Michael kay, but right
now, that's all you got asfar as like an announcer so I just
thought that was strange. I reallydid, And I was like, I
wonder if that was Michael Kay's campto be like, hey, let's remember,
like Michael Kay is also the voiceof the Yankees, so please call
him the radio voice. I hopethat's not true. Yeah, it's just
(07:20):
weird that people were saying on mindMike. I'm I don't love him,
but I don't hate him like someYankee fans do. He's he's all right
the c Yeah, yeah, definitely. I mean my favorite part about watching
or listening to the television broadcast withMichael Kay is when he has like Paul
O'Neill or Simleton on and they busthis chops about never playing baseball. So
(07:42):
to me, but I think that'sgood balance. And k Rod was alright,
you know what I mean, hecould be entertaining, and I know
he's done a lot for the yS network, not just baseball, but
yeah, man, I hope Mike'snot that bitter and selfish. Yeah,
I hope not. I just Ikept hearing it a lot, and outside
looking in, you were just like, why did they keep saying that,
(08:05):
you know what? Because I couldsee it, like, I hope that's
not the case. But like Ikind of see him being a prima donna,
that old prima donna, Michael, you know what I forget. I'm
not gonna Yeah, but I alsoI tuned into the game today without John
and that's it's a huge void, you know, Like but also like you
know, the guy calling it isactually watching the game. There were so
(08:30):
many times where it's like it ishot it back on the backstop, just
like yo, dude, how doyou get it wrong that bad? But
you know, and like is thatwhat he got hit with? That ball?
Like imagine John Sterling was just chainedto the chair. It's so cartoonish
like ow ow, Like if youget a hit, you're like, ah,
(08:54):
You're like you're not going owl,Alex, come on, give me
a break with all that. Yeah, I just you know, I still
kind of hope too, like maybethey could hire him just to do the
home run calls or something like, especially for a new person, he needs
to write the home run calls.Yeah, yeah, And they weren't that
great, it's just his delivery andCadence made it even better. Like you
(09:16):
said, the text message from tshare like that was awful, Like an
a bomb from a rod isn't thatgreat? Ll copy toon? Right?
Was that Jeters or whatever? Idon't know, so yeah, I mean,
look, you'll be missed. Worldseries is over, Yeah as well,
I'm gonna miss yeah, but theycould still play that. They can
(09:39):
cut that off. Also, doyou think that's when he kind of took
his like one of his seats asthe voice of the Yankees? Like,
is that the most? Is thatthe first one where you're like, all
right, now he's an icon thatcall specifically like that? Yeah? I
mean to me maybe, yeah, that's all. But the guy started in
(10:01):
eighty nine, fair, I mean, he's forever. He's terrible. The
nineties kicked in. Okay, Yeah, what's going on with the Mets?
Are they actually good? I don'tknow, man, I am wearing here.
This is the first time on airI am wearing it. Doesn't look
like you're on strike anymore, buddy. No, this is from TIMU six
(10:22):
bucks. Stop it. I swearon my life. I swear check out
tu dot com New York sweatshirt.Dude, it's like athletic, like it's
like it looks like it's solid. It's very solid, so slightly on strike.
Also slightly hyped, you know, not trying to get ahead of myself.
But the Mets were owing vive, you know, and now we're ten
(10:45):
wins. It's it's insane. It'sgreat. Headed to La so I think
that could that's gonna be a gutcheck for sure. But yeah, man
swept the Pirates. The Pirates aregood, like they're a great team.
They are good. We'll give youthat. Yeah, yeah, stories you
guys had a lot of you chippedaway. Man. Now I'm kind of
bad it all around a few times. Yea. The offense defense has been
(11:07):
Yeah, it's great. The offenseis clicking. You know. The starting
rotation has not become an issue yet. You know, the bullpen is great
because he had Edwin Diaz at thehelm, so people are afraid of that.
It cuts, it makes the gameeight innings, you know. So
when you have a guy like that, you know that from having Marianna all
those years. So so it's prettyexciting. This velocity is down. People
(11:31):
aren't concerned, not the Mets, but obviously too. Like when asked that
question, as the Mets hierarchy, are you concerned with Edwin's velocity? You're
not gonna say yes. Oh,yeah, we're extremely concerned. Like I
hate some of these questions that areasked, you know, because like it's
like, are you concerned with, you know, your wife's performance when you
(11:52):
dinner? Like if you ever wantanother dinner again, you're probably not gonna
be like you know lately, Yeah, lately I've been not in like you
know. Just it's ridiculous. SoI'm glad you brought that up. The
whole question about velocity, because Ifeel like, first of all, velocity
hasn't been tracked forever. It's fairlynew. I think they'd like twenty ten
(12:16):
ish, maybe a little sooner,a little later they actually started tracking velocity
and the right and now they useit like this huge stat And I don't
want to get too off off thebeaten path here, but I feel like
this is the why you're having alot of elbow inflammation and a lot of
(12:39):
insane elbow injuries with pitchers. Yeah, because they're just they're so worried about
their velocity stat. They're just tryingto keep their velocity of keep their fling
and they're just throwing the ball hard. Yeah, they always tracked it,
but it wasn't like the fans didn'tknow it right and that. Yeah,
so like there was radar guns sinceNolan Ryan Tom's Heeaver era, but like,
yeah, the scouts had that.It wasn't on the scoreboard, it
(13:01):
wasn't on TV. You're right, twenty ten is that era where it started
because you had yeah, maybe threeand stuff were Randy Johnson. When you
had guys just throwing straight gas likeNonStop, that's when it started showing.
But you're one hundred percent right now. It's like, oh, he's having
an off days had ninety three. It's like, dude, you wouldn't know
that, you know. And alsolike that that's not fair for the batter
(13:24):
to also be able to see thatvelocity because now they're going to make adjustments
on that. So yeah, you'reright that that's it's not like it.
You know, bat speed now isthe thing. But if the pitcher knew
batter's bat speed was off, they'dbe throwing fastballs NonStop. Yeah yeah,
so uh yeah, it's just weird. I don't know. So Mets are
doing great. Let's let's you know, for your sake, since you kind
(13:46):
of are on strike but not reallyon strike, let's hope they keep it
up. Phillies there. You guysjust took it to the Rockies. Man,
Yeah, they go in a row. You got Philly. You got
something to be proud of for uhfor once, but for right now?
I mean what you guys go tothe White Sox? Is that what's happening
next? Let's take a look atYeah, White Sox actually come to you
(14:09):
for it's like a weekend off.Seriously, wait to mail that one in
Philly. Yeah yeah, man, that'll be devastating. You lose to add
a three to the White Sox.Jesus, you're not saying it's gonna happen,
But he could have Sewan Brace aheart attack. Crazier stuff has happened
about that. Brad. Did Bracesurvive the Vegas trip? That? Has
(14:31):
anybody talk to him? He was, He was not in today, but
he has survived. But now he'sgoing on vacation again. And I saw
somebody on twittersday and he had morevacation time than Roman Reigns. So it's
kind of cracking up about that childwith that man. You know, Sean,
it's a it's a tough life,you know what. He works hard,
he's allowed to play hard. Tohate him for that you know who's
(14:52):
working hard other people at Iconic Candy, And I'm proud to say we are
sponsored by Iconic Andy. We're gonnahave an icon iconic moment, so we
will go going forward. We're gonnago back into the past and tear an
iconics moment. Yes, of course, I think that's kind of cool,
right. They're a family owned business. They are bringing back brands like you
(15:15):
see Bubble jug. They got alot of other stuff like cream savers.
Check out their website. It's likea blast from the past. You can
find them at Cracker Barrel five belowand other retailers. It's a really really
cool company. I'm proud to saythat they're part of our family. But
also yeah, check them out.Have some gum. I mean this is
(15:37):
I got to share this with mydaughter and like you shake it up,
throw it in your mouth. Soundsterrible and you like it's a powder slash
gum and you just chew it up. So it's really cool. They're sponsoring
the Q one O two summer tour. They're they're gonna be all over.
iHeart all over. Give us ashot network. So I'm excited to make
(15:58):
some awesome content with them. I'meven talking about maybe going to the Snack
and Candy Convention with them in Indianapolis. So that's next month. So Snack
trying to work on that icon ofcandy. So guys, they're not rebranding
anything. This is the original brand. It's just the company that's now carrying
it called Iconic Candy. So thinkback in the day, the good old
(16:18):
days when you have to worry aboutbills and mortgages and all that other stuff,
when you had no responsibility and youjust wanted to enjoy some candy.
These are the type of candies thatIconic Candy is all about, the old
school stuff that just brings a worldof memories back to you. Check them
out iconiccandy dot com. Correct, yeah, Iconic Candy. Yeah. So
(16:38):
Also, like I shared, likehow you're the other place you work at
has like a night like nineties arein right now. Oh my god.
You see the way everybody's dressing.Teenagers are blessing like it's the nineties.
It's unreal and lucky for them.I have a pair of jeans from the
late nineties that's still fit. Goodfor you, man, I kept mine
like I had eighth grade jeans tolike last year, that's still fit.
(17:02):
But the only reason why I alwayshad him was because when I moved out
of my house, I was stillin college and stuff. I just was
making enough money. My dad's like, hey, like I'm not mad.
You could have an apartment normally bein a dorm room anyway. So I
just split the gap between my houseand my college and had my own apartment
and I moved out. My brother'slike, don't wearry. I'll peck all
your stuff, you know, attackedlike everything that was like from eighth grade
(17:27):
down, Like he took all myother clothes and that's that's the life of
a little brother. And then heonly gave it back as he like had
that growth spurt, like because Carlwent from like four feet to seven feet.
Yeah. Man, Like we talkedabout steroids last week with Carl,
I'm gonna talk about his growth spurt. It was it's insane, like,
you know, like he wasn't thistall dude. Like I used to be
(17:48):
able to like hit him in thebottom of his head with my chin,
and then one day it just couldn'thappen. Now it's like a hall sky
in the family, and no oneknows where it came from I think an
alien took over my brother. He'sdefinitely adopted. Just no one. So
(18:08):
ah the Carl Cole All right, listen, guys, sticking with Major League
Baseball, there has been a stringof bead uh basically bad injuries with pitchers,
yea, and it's kind of leavingthese fans and even the MLB Players
(18:30):
Association to figure out what the heck'sgoing on and why is there's so many
injuries. But uh, you gota ton of pictures. You know,
Otani's not pitching this year, buthe's still hitting because of his time.
You know, Tommy john is hiselbow. Spencer Schider, so dude,
So you have Shane Bieber, Alkantara, you have Streider. Who else?
(18:52):
The gram Shures are out for mostof the year with injuries. Twenty year
old Marlin's prospect Juri Perez, Wetalked about him months ago, Framberg,
Valdez, Garrett. I mean, come on, you got Brian Wu,
Kyle Bradish, Nick Pivetta, alland you're talking elbow shoulder injuries all starting
(19:19):
pitchers. It's just under I know, Baltimore is ridled with pitcher injuries,
and it leaves everybody wondering what theheck is going on? And the main
culprit, did you just do thislike the sticky, sticky stuff, So
that's not the main culprit. Thefirst thing that came that the MLP MLBPA
is blaming it on is pitch clock, which is a little let's face it,
(19:41):
it's a little much like I don'tis the extra five seconds to ten
seconds they would take really the reasonwhy they're blowing their elbow out, I
don't know. I think it's asticky stuff. I think I think it's
a combination. I think it's thepitch clock, the velocity, the sticky
stuff, all that stuff, andI think these guys are just throwing their
(20:03):
arm out of their elbow, shoulder, whatever you want to do. I
mean, it sucks, right becauseyou're talking about those are people we're supposed
to tell our grandkids about. Dude, every you know, how much money
went out the door every single timeand name went out of my mouth two
minutes ago, the billions of dimes. It's wild. It's it kind of
(20:26):
sucks right, like companies are goingout of bits too. Seriously, On
one hand, you you guys MLBwanted the pitch clock to make games a
little bit shorter, a little bitmore compact, to be more appealing,
and attendance is up, or atleast it was up last year when they
introduced a pitch clock for MLB,And now you have these aces that are
going down, So it's like, what what are people going to try to
check out? You know, likewhy I'm I'm not gonna see garyt Cole
(20:48):
pitch anytime soon, so why bothergoing to the ballpark? You know what
I mean? Yeah, it's it'sit's not good. And I Mike,
I don't know what the answer ishere. It's crazy, Like you know,
I look at the Phillies like NolaWheeler go out, like they become
as big of a question mark asthe New York Mets. Oh, you
know, the Braves like they're holdingstrong. But using Spencer Strider is absolutely
(21:12):
crazy. And with Strider, likehe learned a new pitch during spring and
I wonder if like that that's notthe pitch clock, you know what I
mean, that's grip, So likeI don't know, it's it's so crazy.
But also like the athletes have strainson their bodies. They're working out,
like Noah Cindergarden is the biggest examplethis. The guy would eat deer
(21:36):
meat like all off season and justwork out like ice bats, working out
like an absolute like legit four likeyou know what I mean. But his
arm couldn't stay with the body likeyou know. So I don't know.
It's just it's unfortunate because you havethese legendary names now being put on the
(21:57):
shelf, and it it's like kindof like it's not fun for the game.
It's not like I don't want tobeat the Braves without Strider, you
know no. And then honestly,if you're looking at it, it's like,
where how do you fix the problem? If you add five or ten
seconds to the pitch clock, Idon't think that's gonna fix your issue.
You're not gonna tell a picture thatyou want to, you know, slow
down, you know, you know, hey, stop throwing one hundred miles
(22:19):
per hour. Like that's not that'snot a solution. Like, there's no
solution here. I know that umpireshave been talked about being replaced with AI
and robot. I think we justget a pitch machine out. Oh man,
just say forget about forget about thepictures, guys, we'll just have
AI. We'll program these weird pitchesin there and then they'll put their own
spit. That actually pretty well nowI would coach it. I'm coaching softball
(22:42):
and we use the Blue Flame andit's funny because it's eight U girls softball
and that ball comes in like fortyplus. I'm just telling you that's great.
It is great, But like Icould strike out all the Little League
kid ate you Little League kids withthis thing. And these girls are hitting
it like they are hitting it andI'm talking about multiple runs scored per inning.
(23:03):
Very proud of them, but alsolike it's it's scary too because you
are flinging like it's like a catapult, Like look up a blue flame.
Uh, there is no, it'snot a pitching machine. It is literally
like medieval like catapults. Yeah,it's insane, dude. And it's just
like, see your heart's a littleracy, like when when you're going through
(23:26):
it, because you're like, youknow, any minute if you don't calculate
this the right way. Oh mygod, this thing is a monster,
yo. It can do damage. It can absolutely do damage. But I'm
proud to say our girls are doingdamage. We are Yeah, we are
undefeated for the year and we're cruisingthroughout the season and payton Is is really
(23:47):
smashing the ball. So proud ofher. You you got to talk and
a little bit. You guys willhear it definitely after our first break.
You got to talk to Hosmer earlierthis week, which was a really good,
big hoss. So this this isa busy week. Yeah. Well,
yeah, it brought back some memories. You know. Twenty fifteen was
(24:08):
a crazy part of my life.My wife was out of town. I
didn't have a child yet I'm screaming. The police were called and the first
true story. Yeah, the firstthing. The first thing they asked is
where it's my wife? And Iwas like, she's out of that's not
here, and mind she can't cometo the door right now. If you
(24:29):
knew where I lived, like, there is not a house in sight,
Like I'm not trying to brag.Neighbors are farlid, far yards away from
mailbox to mailbox. Yeah, sothat was during the playoffs. She got
back home for the World Series Gamefive. We actually had tickets to I
wasn't able to go because we're inDisney with with your family. Actually Matt
(24:51):
was right next to me. We'resitting there watching on TV with Rorals fans
when has decided to do the maddash home and that's what it's called.
So I wasted no time. Iwas definitely So there was a bunch of
things, like it unlocked memories ofme teaching kids that were slightly younger than
me about footwork at first base,Like I was asked to help a couple
(25:15):
of high school kids and stuff likethat, so that came back to me
just my love for first base.So I kind of like it was like
almost like talking to Jay Z orthe Beatles about music, So like we
were talking about that a lot,and also like it just, dude,
just a lot of memories, Likewe're just popping up in my head to
the point where I went way offscript, but I think I know he
(25:38):
enjoyed it and like just really broughtit all back home. I still got
our question. We'd like to askevery athlete in and that's their favorite ballpark
to play, said Minnesota. Whenhe's in a slump, he doesn't know
if the numbers prove it, buthe always felt like he was able to
get out of a slump there. We talked about least favorite fan bases.
He talked about how Bogarts went readfor four and when he when he got
(26:02):
out on the fourth time, theylike boot him in Boston and then in
Chicago, they like they were ona losing streak and they're like, don't
worry, you get them next time, you know. So it was just
like two iconic fan bases that hehad short stints with but played very well.
So has was awesome. But likeI said, so now, like
talking to Terry Collins today, Iwant to get him on the show.
(26:25):
Uh, you know, just becauseI like, I don't know, man,
with all these iconic candies and thinkingabout iconic moments and that's history.
And that was almost there. Man, We're at the promised Land, you
know, so close. I was. I felt so bad when you guys
lost. You know, Matt reallydid. And Matt was a great friend
when I was there, but healso told me how I was gonna end,
(26:47):
and he was completely right. Yeah, it's it's unfoot you almost.
I mean, you wanted to bewrong most of the time pretty much.
Do you know that I took itearlier flight home because I was that angry.
We could we stayed in the air. I could not stay in the
happiest place on earth being a goodfantast No, I convinced Jen to take
(27:08):
an early flight home. You knowwhat, I don't see anything wrong with
tam Magic. I don't see anythingwrong with them. Yeah, you take
the early flight home from Denver. We also to tease this, and you
could hear has talk about himself, but his wife is from Villanova. She
covered Villanova basketball football. She's hugein Philly, like we all love Casey.
(27:33):
But he talked about they were ona hiatus for like a year and
he shows up to Phillies the PhillyStadium Citizens Bank, and he got booed.
He said there was signs out therelike telling him like you you did
wrong by Casey or whatever, likethey all hated him. He's like,
so I was like, oh mygod. So like he was just talking
about that and like how much lovethey have for his wife, and he's
(27:56):
like, I'm glad I'm back withher because I don't know if I would

(31:45):
Are my co host here, Mikeis talking to Hosmer, The good,
the bed and everything in between.Stay with us is the vide Live on
Fox Sports The Gamer Alexa play FoxSports Radio The Gambler on iHeartRadio immediately every
time you always think that they're gonnaway. Philly's new home for Fox Sports
Radio is The Gambler. The Gambler, Philly's home for all things sports gambling.
(32:12):
This is a Fox Sports The Gambler. I'm Mike Powers from The Divide
Live. I have a special guesthere at Eric Cosmer. Some of you
may know him, major League Baseballfour time Gold Glove winner right Unfortunately,
well fortunate for him. I'm fortunatefor my fandom, which is the Mets
twenty fifteen World Series champ. AndEric. I want to go right into
(32:34):
that because you know, I know, we're here to promote your amazing new
media company, your new podcasts andstuff like that, but that play you're
an amazing first baseman. And youknow, I teach first base to high
school kids, and you know,I was fortunate enough to really know the
art of first base. But thatplay, when you're going down the line
on third base right takes the groundball which you know obviously was way off
(33:00):
the bag. Maybe should have letWilmer, Uh, you know field it.
What's going through your mind when you'reyou're looking at that as a first
baseman too, knowing the play andthe difficulty of it. Yeah, you
know, first off, Yeah,I've definitely gotten to meet a lot of
Mets fans worldwide, and then I'ma lot more familiar with how many Mets
(33:21):
fans there are worldwide now, especiallyafter that twenty fifteen year. But you
know, the play, I've alwayscredited the coaching staff and and and everyone
that you know helped us with Scottreports and preparing for that series, because
you know, as a player,it's on the fly. You're you're going
from one game to the next, you're going from one series to the next.
You don't really have much time towatch the games, watch the teams
(33:44):
before playing them, and in thatseries, before playing the Mets, you
know, there was obviously we knewthat a lot of their guys were banged
up, David especially, you know, he was playing with a lot of
injuries, playing through stuff and guttingit out. So you know, we
really wanted to apply pre sure onhim any kind of way we can,
especially on the base pass. Andyou know, that was just a move
(34:05):
that I think the instincts took overbecause of all that preparation and all the
top of us being aggressive and youknow, and the initial the initial start
of it started like a good idea. About two to three strides into me
running home, I realized it wasa really bad idea, and then luckily
the throw got away from Darnaut andthen it turned out to be a good
idea again. But that is athat is one of the key plays of
(34:27):
my career that that stuck with me, and people always ask me about that.
Yeah, because I also thought aboutit. I was like, man,
like I used to thrive in highschool and a little bit of community
college ball, Like I used tothrive on that as a first basement not
play right, third basement throws itacross the diamond and you got to throw
it home. And it's also likewhere you place the ball too, because
you want to get it down aslow as you can for the catcher on
(34:50):
that slide, so he has ashot to try to get you out.
So you know, it's just youknow, I was like, of course
the gold Club first basement is theone that makes that play and knows you
know that that he's capable of gettingthere. So it was just for me.
It was pretty cool. But youknow, going into that, like,
you know, there's something you didwith a friend of the show,
Cliff Floyd, and it was itwas pretty epic and it was last year
(35:14):
spring training, I believe, uh, and I show it to a lot
of kids that I'm teaching and coachingand stuff like that, and it's really
the difference between one, uh youknow your footwork at first base, but
to the difference between the bag nowand the bag before. And like how
you were you were excited for thenew bag. I know your career has
(35:34):
done now, but that you hada couple of years with with the new
big bag or a year and ahalf, I should say, uh,
what what was your feelings towards itas a first baseman? Yeah, you
know, Cliff Cliff has been aI've been a huge fan of Cliff ever
since growing up down here in SouthFlorida and getting to know him, you
know, breaking into the big leaguesa little bit, and then now just
getting to know him over the yearsas he's worked in media. He's awesome
(35:58):
man. But yeah, the newbig I think it's obviously gonna help for
some injuries over there. You know, that could get mixed up when there's
a close play you got to goacross, like the fair foul line and
the runners coming. But you know, first base was that was my home.
That was my position ever since Iwas, you know, ten years
old, So I was extremely familiarwith all the different type of throws,
(36:19):
all the different type of angles, different type of stuff that's going to happen
over there at the position. Sothat's something I just continue to try and
learn and try and grow. Andyou know, throughout the career, I've
I've had different plays where I've hadto do different things with the foot or
with my footwork. But the biggerbag definitely simplifies a lot of that,
and I think it's going to limit, you know, a lot of those
little collisions that could potentially happen,And you know, I think it's best
(36:43):
for both parties. The runner inthe first base and at that point awesome.
So before we run out of time, I have to everybody at Fox
Sports Philadelphia was like, tell Eric, we said to hide a casey.
We're the home of Villanova basketball andfootball, and we know your wife very
very well, and we all feellike we're a fan of hers. So
if you guys are ever in thePhiladelphia market, comes through the iHeart Studios
(37:04):
and we'd all love to have youguys there. You know, I want
to talk about Moonball, man,I definitely would. I joke. I
joke with her all the time. You know, we we were dating for
a couple of years. We brokeup for one year, and the one
year we broke up apparently it waspublic knowledge. But every time we ran
through Philadelphia, man, the fanswould let me hear it, and they
let me know I was They letme know I was making a big mistake.
(37:24):
That's Philadelphia love. Kate. Kateloves Philadelphia. She loved her time
there. But yeah, we woulddefinitely love to pop in and see all
you guys. Yeah, that's that'shilarious. That's hilarious. Yeah, that's
the one thing I learned being aMet fan in Philadelphia, Like they are
very, very passionate, but it'slike kind of like, you know,
you can't mimic it anywhere else.Is there any other fan base? Why
(37:45):
I have you there that that You'relike, man, this is very unique.
Whether you played for them or not, you were like, men,
you don't really want to cross them? Well, okay, what the last
two seasons of my career, youknow, I bounced around a couple different
places, and I got to Igot to experience Boston. I got to
(38:05):
experience Chicago with the Cubs. Andyou talk about two unique fan bases and
two amazing places, but huge markets, and the difference between those. I
always tell people, you know,my first that second half of a season
in Boston. We were there onegame and and then boguards was, you
know, four to four going on, and spit that bat and he hit
(38:27):
the line drive and got catches in. He gets out, he's walking back
to the dugout, and you know, fans are like, hey, Xander,
you better lock it in next timefor that fit that bag. You
come on, You're better than that. And I'm like, man, this
is a tough crowd. And thenyou go over to Chicago the next year.
First couple of games, we droppedthe first couple of games, and
you know, we're leaving Wrigley Field, and the fans are like, hey,
it's okay, guys, we'll getthem tomorrow, you know. So
(38:51):
I'm like, man, this isa unique experience right here. Two huge
fan market bases and two just completedifferent personalities. But I definitely got to
appreciate both of them. You justunderstand how into it the fan is,
and I think overall, when yousee how into it the fans are there,
that's where the appreciation just continues togrow. This is another question that
(39:12):
I've had the ability to ask ToddFrasier and Clip Floyd. So I wanted
to get your take on it.Is there a ballpark where you're slumping like
you can't wait to get there becauseyou know you could easily get out of
a slump. Man, I hadsome good good times in Minnesota. I
don't know if my numbers are likeoff the charts there, but I always
felt comfortable there. I always feltlike I could see the ball real well.
(39:36):
I always felt like I was goingto leave that game with a hit
or two. And yeah, thatwas somewhere on the schedule, especially in
the division. You know, backin the Al Central days, when you
know we're going to Cleveland facing KlouberBauer Carrasco. Then we're going to Chicago
facing Sale Kintana. You know,Minnesota had some good pictures as well,
but just a mixture between how yousee the ball at the ballpark and you're
(39:59):
facing a little bit of you know, less arms, not cy young type
quality arms. So maybe that wasa little bit of comfort for me heading
there. That's awesome. That's awesome. So you're starting something that I feel
like baseball needs, right and that'sMoonball Media and more. Also, you
know your podcast Digging Deep, youalready made some awesome content. It's only
(40:19):
a weekend if I'm correct, andI've already seen you talk about hey,
when you hit that walk off base, hit, make sure you touch second
if you want a little bit moremoney or hit those things. So tell
me all about that, how it'sgoing, and you know what your plans
are for that in the future.Yeah, So so move on media the
(40:39):
overall media company. There's a there'sa bunch of different layers to it.
But what I'm really honed in onand focused in on is the dig and
Deep podcast and the dig inside ofthe podcast. You know, we're eventually
we have Digging Weekly where we're goingto talk about little, little more things
that are current on the game, like the walk off single that guys hit
and don't end up touching second base, and that's something that I'm really enjoying
(41:01):
and I'm having fun, you know, I want to stay connected to the
game is some kind of way.Towards the end of my career, I
always found myself, when I'm notplaying every day kind of mind grating to
the younger guys and really trying tohelp them out and keep them prepared and
ready for their opportunities. So Iwanted to expand that a little bit and
and help out as many young guysas I can, not just the guys
(41:22):
that I know that have the abilityto shoot me a text message or an
Instagram methods. So just trying toexpand that any way I can. The
Digging Deep side of it, weget to go into, you know a
lot of unique stories, get toshare some insight from players on their path
to the big leagues, their passivesuccess and sometimes when they had some adversity
that knock them down, how theyresponded to it, and then the Digging
(41:43):
Weekly side is going to be,you know, just a little more reactioning,
reaction to the game, to what'shappening in current events. And the
one the walk off single. That'sfunny you bring that up, because you
know, I've watched a couple ofgames now where it's happened, and I'm
like, man, I got toshare this on and now it's happened a
couple more times after that, andobviously the players haven't seen it yet,
(42:04):
but a lot of the fans arestarting to be a lot more engaged,
saying, man, that was thefirst thing I thought of. They got
it hit second he caught himself adouble. So it's been a lot of
fun. I've been having a lotof fun exchanges on X, going back
and forth with fans, and everyonealways says, you know, you're gonna
miss that locker room banter, You'regonna miss that locker room talk and all
that type of thing, and I'vetried to bring that to X a little
bit with the baseball world, andso far it's been a lot of fun.
(42:27):
Yeah, I was gonna say, like one last thing, like obviously
you announced officially your retirement. Congratulationstoo. I'm I'm born in eighty five.
You're like eighty eight, eighty nine, I believe if I'm correct.
So it's like a bummer watching myguys now, you know, retire,
like people that I could have actuallyplayed in high school against and stuff like
that. So it's a little bitof a bummer, But also like how
(42:51):
do you feel about that? Likeone I think that I noticed, at
least with Todd Frazier, right,he was in Pittsburgh, he got dfad
end up going to the Olympics. He felt like you saw on more gas
in the tank, Like was thisyour decision or was this like the game
saying well, we don't like we'drather try a younger guy or give give
somebody who we don't have to payas much. Granted you're guaranteed money,
(43:14):
so it's a little bit different foryou, right, Yeah, it is
different. It's a unique situation here, exactly right. I think at the
end of the day, I thinkthere there could have been more opportunities for
me to go out and make ateam, for me to go out and
play for a position on one ofthese you know, with one of these
organizations. But at the end ofthe day, you know, I just
truly felt that not to take anythingaway from any of these roster spots,
(43:38):
because they're extremely valuable and I appreciatethem, I really do, but I
just felt like I could be morevaluable to the game in a way of
just being more than that twenty sixthman on the roster, the guy that's
not playing, you know, everyday, and the guy that's really just
kind of being an extra coach onthe bench there. So I wanted to
expand on that as much as Ican. And this is something that I
(44:00):
feel like can keep me in tunewith the game. It can continue to
have me pass certain things down onyoungsters in the game or coaches that are
coaching these youngsters, whatever it is. So you know, that's where the
inspiration for Moonball media came, andespecially the inspiration for Diging Deep. So
gonna ride with it as long asI can, and you know, hopefully
the people enjoy it and hopefully itcontinues to grow a beautiful game, because
(44:22):
you know, for me, I'mnot dumby without baseball, you know,
know of this is possible. Noneof the stuff I've gotten new experience in
my life as possible, So Ialways feel like I got to get back
to the game, and this isgoing to be my way of giving back.
All right, Well, Eric, thank you man, and for fans
out there right now, you cancheck them out. Podcast is everywhere right
now, Digging Deep podcasts and checkout you know, everything that he's got
(44:45):
going on with as a new mediacompany. So congrats to you. Tell
Casey we said hi, and Iyou know, keep doing it, man.
I can't wait to watch more content. We'll do, Mike, I
appreciate you, thanks for having meon. Thanks brother, I'll say it.
There's Eric Costmer, pretty awesome.Check out Moonball Media, check out
(45:05):
Digging Deep Podcasts. Like I said, he's already sharing stuff that I can't
believe that's going on, whether youknow, it's just that simple fact,
and I know you got to checkout how he described it on his show.
But pretty much like a walk off, everybody celebrates that single. It
could have been a double, couldhave even been a home run if you're
Robin Ventur in the playoffs. Butif the player actually just touches second,
(45:28):
he gets recorded for a double andthat could help him with his stats,
with his contract with a lot ofthings and actually put a lot of money
in a lot of zeros in thebank account. So Eric sharing those little
things on Moonball Media. More importantlyDigging Deep podcast. You could see it
weekly where podcasts are everywhere and onYouTube, so check him out. He's
an amazing guy, you know, and I can't wait to keep doing some
(45:51):
content with him. So we'll beright back on Fox Sports. The Gambler.
This is Mike from the Divide Livespreads Total sign all the prop that's
in the tweet. It's the Gambler.
