March 11, 2025: Host Adam Kaufman (Twitter @adammkaufman) is joined by Dan Watkins (@danwatkinsradio) and guests Doug Kyed (@dougkyed) from the Boston Herald and VSiN's Jonathan Davis (@westcoasthky). The Patriots have been busy adding on defense, but what about some receivers for Drake Maye? Kyed weighs in on possible targets for New England as NFL free agency continues. Plus, somehow, the Bruins are winning since selling off several veterans at the trade deadline. Is it worth investing in Boston to make the playoffs? Davis has thoughts on that, along with other NHL futures.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
W r k O presens Boston's only nightly sports betting show,
The Gambler with Adam Kaufman. Now from nine till midnight,
your home to talk spreads, props, totals and more. Hey, Doc,
and what's the harm of bringing back a little info
in the future.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Maybe we could place a couple of deaths.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
The Gambler starts now.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
All I have to do is bet on the winner and.

Speaker 3 (00:24):
I'll never lose.

Speaker 4 (00:25):
Hears Adam Kaufman.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
Happy Tuesday, Everyone, welcome in brand new show, The Gambler
with Adam Kaufman. I am Adam, Dan Watkins to see her,
Hey Dan? Hey yeah, college basketball strikes again. Brian bought
on the board. What's up being what's going on? So
we're gonna do a lot today, as is typical over
the next three hours. Here on our second day of
the four day show week, we are going to do

(00:51):
in this first hour some hockey. We have not really
had much hockey talk on the show lately. Obviously the
NHL trade deadline is recently behind us. Brad Marshaan, how
fitting you know, well, I guess not the first game,
but second game. As member of the Florida Panthers, not
that he's played in neither one, but the second one
right back in Boston. So Marshawan is, you know, meeting

(01:13):
with the media again, getting choked up pretty regularly talking
about the move and his time with Boston, message to
the fans, all that stuff. And I'm not teasing him.
I totally get it. I mean, dude was part of
the organization for and what are we twenty twenty five
right now? So six going back to his time in
Providence even you know, but I mean almost two decades.

(01:34):
Like the guy who's been a Boston Bruin. You know,
I don't even remember off the top of my head
what year he was technically drafted by Boston, but he
has been in the Bruins family for a long time.
So it's weird. It's weird for everyone. It's weird to
see him in in the red you know, T shirts, hats, yeah,
you know, quarter zip whatever it may be.

Speaker 4 (01:54):
So you know, he's dropping hints today, by the way,
that he's still gonna to come back here I think
in the summer.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Yeah, and I'm not surprised by that. You know, it's
it becomes a question of whether the Bruins want to
go down that road. I don't think they'd have any
issue giving him a you know, well, did you see
the reports today about the contract the.

Speaker 4 (02:19):
Contract from Spitting Chicklets on barstool? They had BIZ had
the details today. Excuse me saying that the Bruins were
at three years six point three per year. You know,
his number six points for.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
A thirty seven year old through age forty.

Speaker 4 (02:32):
And Marshan wanted over seven a year. So I don't
blame the Bruins for not budging. I think that's a
ridiculous ask on Marshan's end. I know he's kind of
you know, he's been on a very team friendly deal
for the last six seven years here, But yep, I mean,
like you said that that deal will take care of
him through his age forty season, if he's even still
in the league at that point. I'm surprised the Bruins
even offered him a multi year deal. I was thinking

(02:55):
all along the Bruins would be offering you know, what
they gave bergeron Crazie towards year to year, year to year,
heavily incentive a base around two million split the cap
hit up, and I thought that would be what Marshan
would be looking at here for a guy that's, you know,
coming off a double hip surgery. I think he's had
three surgeries the last two years. He's got some concussion
issues as well. He's at the the he's on his

(03:17):
last legs here.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
So like, I don't blame the Bruins increasingly productive, right
like I don't.

Speaker 4 (03:21):
And he still has over twenty goals this year. Whi's
good for him, But right, I don't blame the Bruins
one bit. And you know, maybe they weren't happy with
some of the other stuff going on too. Maybe they
didn't like him as as the leader of the room either.

Speaker 2 (03:33):
So no, it's possible, but I have no idea. This
couldn't be more speculation on my part, but maybe in
his mind. And I wouldn't even blame him for it.
And this isn't a marsh On thing. This would be
true of any player in his position. A guy who's
been with the team for again nearly two decades and
recently named the captain of the squad. Back of his head,

(03:56):
he's probably thinking they're really going to trade the captain away, right,
trying to almost and exactly and they did, and you know,
depending on how much he is able to play in
the postseason, they could get a first round pick and
return and if they end up giving up a first
rounder for the Marshan rental, and then he wants to
come on back because I'm sure his family is not

(04:18):
even going with him.

Speaker 4 (04:19):
You know, he seems like a guy that will stay
here after he retires, right.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
You know, and at least part of the time, you know,
kind of like you know.

Speaker 4 (04:27):
We still here, Tuca's still here, child's still here.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
Like Sean Thornton was always around, you know what I mean,
Like that type of thing for sure. And I don't
think those guys, I know, those guys are not here
year round. Like Tuca goes back to Finland and you know,
obviously berge Ron goes back to Quebec, and like these
guys are are going to Marsha on same deal. Like

(04:52):
he'll he'll be back in Canada and sprinkle some time
out here. And because you know, they've got friends. His
wife's got friends. Is kids have friends like school age,
you know for some of them. So for sure, like
that's that's why they're going to stay. They're not going
to follow him to Florida visit on the weekends or
something like that. But it's again, it's we're only talking
about a you know, two, three maybe four month kind

(05:15):
of period of time right here before he's right back
in Boston, like you said, maybe angling to come back,
and I, unlike some who have vocalized, you know, the
the opposition elsewhere, I'd absolutely welcoming back. I'd love to
have him back. And that's you know, they're holding on
to the sea. They're not giving it to anybody else
for the duration of this year. Comes on back and

(05:36):
reclaims captaincy and all that. Like I didn't take significant
issue with Marshawn's leadership in the room. Wasn't perfect obviously,
but you know, neither's the roster and and the you know,
ability to draft. In recent years, like the Bruins and
the Patriots have had a very similar issue over the
last decade decade and a half and it's followed them

(06:00):
and it's led them to exactly where they are right now. Now.
On those Patriots, well, first with hockey, we're gonna preview
the late games. A little bit later on, we'll have
Jonathan Davis, our buddy from Visen come on with us.
We'll also in the way to the trade deadline. Hit
on some futures, be it make miss playoffs, win the conference,
win the cup, whatever it may be. We'll touch on

(06:21):
all that end of the hour, little state your case
or group pick. You know, options are a little bit limited.
Everything in the NBA, for instance, at this point has
already tipped off. There's you know again, we've got a
few plays available to well, tons of plays, but a
few games available to us in the NHL, and college
basketball obviously is yeah, college basketball a little bit limited

(06:42):
as well. But on the football front, we will have
Doug Kyde from the Boston Herald on course covers the Patriots.
He's on the beat. He'll come on with us less
than an hour from now talk about where the Pats
are at. And for anyone wondering what the Patriots did
in Day two in free agency, here's the list. That's
what they did in Day two in free agency. Very

(07:04):
active day one, really nothing going on in day two.
So what does that mean? Nothing? There's no huge takeaway
from that, other than obviously aspects of the market are
drying up. We did see some guys latch on elsewhere
going in no particular order. You had obviously liked, not

(07:26):
that they're going for another quarterback, but Daniel Jones is
now part of a QB competition in Indianapolis with Anthony Richardson.
All of that, I mean, how fascinating will that be
to watch if you're thinking about receivers. Honestly, just playing golf,
Richardson out of the backfield un till he gets hurt
again or it just gets tired. He needs to come
off the field. That's possible too. If you're thinking about receivers,

(07:48):
you should be. DeMarcus Robinson lands with the forty nine Ers,
so ends up leaving the Rams for the Niners, stays
in division. DeAndre Hopkins, no longer of the Chiefs, goes
to the Ravens to play with Lamar Jackson. So that's
a fun one there. He's washed. I have no issue
with the Patriots not signing DeAndre Hopkins. He's more name

(08:09):
than a performer. At this point in time. Nick Westbrook
Akine into the AFC East, but with the Dolphins two
year deal, six and a half million dollars. This is
a guy, in fairness that's coming off, you know, a
pretty good year by his standards. You know, thirty two
catches about five hundred yards. Nine touchdowns actually is a
big number.

Speaker 4 (08:27):
I thought they might be interested in him because he
was you know, he was drafted by that Vrabel regime
down there in Tennessee. And as we've seen, if you
have some sort of a connection to Mike Rabel, you're
getting a call to Chris Fowksboro this week. But yeah,
I mean a Keene was uh Westbrook a Keene. I
mean that was like he had like a huge streak
in the middle of the year, didn't He was into
like six or seven straight games that he.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
Scored something like that. But he was I mean, I
remember more with the yardage than the touchdowns. But he
was hot for like a month long period of time
when they got super banked.

Speaker 4 (08:58):
Four in a row, seven out of eight games, eight
total touchdowns in eight games in an eight game stretch
from like October through November.

Speaker 2 (09:06):
Zay Jones back with the Cardinals, just sort of scanning
the board here in terms of the defensive side of
the ball, justin Reid, the safety of the Chiefs went
to the Saints, So you know, sneaky, interesting moves on
the part of the Chiefs in terms of losing guys that,
you know, should people should pay attention to Kyler Murray
has a backup in Arizona, Jacoby Brissett. For anyone that

(09:28):
was wondering where did Brissett wind up, he hadn't. Now
he has so as the Patriots move on as a
backup anyway to Josh Dobbs, Brissett, you know, finds a
new home. Good on him. Maybe he can take a
break from these you know, backup insurance commercials or whatever
he's doing and actually find a way into games. Lord

(09:49):
knows that Kyler Murray has trouble staying healthy through an
entire season. In general, kind of a quieter day across
the NFL, and you may be wondering, by the way,
who's out there, like, who's still available? Well, different sites
of different lists, obviously, but I will I will give

(10:09):
you this. Yahoo here has a ranking of its top
twenty five free agents that includes guys who already have homes.
I almost run him down for you. Let you know
who's still available, Sam Darnold, as we know Seahawks, Milton
Williams number two, a Patriot, Ronnie Stanley. I know you
guys both were just foaming at the mouth. The idea

(10:33):
of Stanley Target one. Yeah, he wound up staying in Baltimore,
so at least didn't go somewhere else. Josh Sweat went
to the Cardinals. You have Javon Holland, You're gonna hear
a lot of defensive names. Javon Holland to the Giants.
Byron Murphy, junior of the Vikings, ends up stay and put.

(10:55):
Dj Reid of course, goes to the Lions after leaving
the Jets. DeVante Adams back to the offense as we know,
landed with the Rams. Malcolm Kuntz returning to the Raiders.
Nick Bolton of the Chiefs sticks around Chris Godwin. That
was sort of my quiet fantasy, along with a lot
of other people, really cashed in with the Buccaneers. So

(11:18):
now we get to guys who are you know, some
many way that are still available. Eagles guard Mackai Becton
is still on the market. Will Freeze is back to
the Colts. The guard got a massive deal almost ninety
million over five years. Pardon me. With the Vikings, he
left the Colts. Javarius Ward goes to the Colts from
the Niners. Aaron Rodgers, I can't believe he's number fifteen

(11:40):
on this list is available. Amari Cooper is available. As
we know, quiet year for him in some ways, you know,
just you know, wasn't nearly the factor in the Bills offense.
I thought he was going to be only had about
three hundred yards in eight games. But he's out there
if you're looking for a veteran Khalil mass big fat

(12:01):
deal with the Chargers to go back almost twenty million dollars.
Stefan Diggs heard Mike Reese of ESPN sort of sneaky
float the idea of Stefan Diggs in New England earlier.
He tours ACL in week eight. As we know, he's
coming back from an injury. He's also going to turn
thirty two in November. So can't imagine you're gonna have
to pay him much whoever it is, because it'll be

(12:23):
a proved situation whenever it is that he's even available.
Hassan Reddick to the Bucks from the Jets. Dre Greenlaw
goes to the Broncos from the Niners. Trevon Morig to
the Panthers from the Raiders. Ernest Jones sticks around in Seattle.
Jonathan Allen, formerly Commanders, goes to the Vikings, Joey Bosa,

(12:44):
who of course was cut loose by the Chargers, and
then you have Justin Reid to the Saints after leaving
the Chiefs. So that's twenty five names that I just
gave you. How many are still out there available less
than five? So like that, a lot of the market
here is obviously drying up, and there's not a lot
of great offensive talents in terms of pass catchers for

(13:06):
Drake May that you're going to be able to acquire here.

Speaker 4 (13:09):
Well, there was one name that I don't think you
mentioned there because he's not technically a free agent at
this moment, but in about fifteen hours he will be.
Cooper Cup, I think is an interesting one. And Andrew
Harold or Andrew Callahan of The Herald had a great
report tonight saying that this is quote I'm reading from
the article here. According to a league source, Cup is
curious about the prospect of playing in New England and

(13:29):
has shared that curiosity with some close to him. Cup
has personal and professional connections to the Pats, starting with
ex college teammate and fellow wideout Kendrick Bourne, who was
repeatedly advocated for Cup to come to New England on
social media. The two remain friendly. Sources say, I mean,
if if I'm on board, yeah sure. I mean I
know we were kind of dogging on him at in

(13:50):
the postseason that he might be totally watched on him.
But I mean, if he's healthy somehow, you know, he
gets some time off and he's healthy, healthy can come in.
I mean, he'd be a great role model type guy,
you know, and just a nice little security blanket there
for Drake May too.

Speaker 2 (14:04):
Man, even if he's not healthy, he's better than the
majority of what you've shared the last couple of years. Definitely,
I mean sad, but that's the reality. I oh Cooper
Cup with open arms. I pick him up at the airport.

Speaker 4 (14:16):
He played under Thomas Brown, who is the assistant former
assistant head coach of the Rams. He's now the Pats.
What passing game? No, the tight ends coach. So little
uh couple little intriguing little uh you know nuggets there
about Cup. Absolutely it could be interesting. I mean is
I don't know, do you think we'll get Cup news
like write at like twelve oh five tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (14:38):
Oh, it's possible, But I think it's a great question
for Doug Kayde when he joins us in less than
an hour, see what he thinks of the offensive side
of the ball in particular, and then from there a
lot of basketball. Sammy Chowdrey will hop on with us.
We'll find out how Tonight's Chowdrey's choice is doing. He's
been giving us almost nothing but winners over the last
few weeks, but he's gonna help us preview a much

(14:58):
larger slate in the NA tomorrow. Only the four games
tonight and possibly by the end of Pretty Chalky Night,
we will see we're certainly sweating the Milwaukee Bucks. An
official show played to cover in a tie game right now,
but more on that a little bit. But Childre will
join us look ahead to a big one, potential NBA
Finals preview between the Celtics and Thunder tomorrow night, although

(15:23):
there are some key guys that are going to be
absent from that game on both sides. Final hour ton
of college hoops. Rob Donaldson, professional handicapper who's been on
with us a number of times, will hop on and
we'll get into it. It'll be a lot of fun,
so stay with us. Tons coming up starts with hockey
Jonathan Davis from Vson next, Jonathan Davis with us from

(15:48):
Vson looking at some NHL futures, and Jonathan mentioned just
a little while ago the Bruins mere moments away from
a come from behind win, which would make it consecutive
wins since selling off so many pieces at the NHL
trade deadline. It's been years since we have seen Boston
go true seller. I mean, it's not what this franchise does.

(16:12):
You know, they don't always add obviously in looking for championships.
They will if they feel like they're in position, but
the very least they don't turn into a team that sells.
They care about sneaking into the playoffs and getting that
gait and at least being able to say they've got
a postseason streak, and on and on and on. So
I say all that to say that the Bruins are

(16:32):
sitting right now what will be only a couple points
out of a wild card spot, albeit with a games
in hand situation that is not in their favor, in
multiple teams in front of them that obviously is not
in their favor, which is why the odds. For instance,
I'm looking at FanDuel Bruins twelve to one to make
the playoffs. In the Eastern Conference. Is that worth a

(16:55):
sprinkle to you?

Speaker 5 (17:00):
I know, I mean, is it worth it? Yes, it's
worth it, But is it I think you've gotten money
better spent, you know, I think are better futures out
there for me. I mean, I just I just don't
think it. Look, they're going through a nice run and obviously,
I mean they've beaten the two Florida teams and back
to back games here. But no, I'm not crazy about

(17:23):
them at twelve to one. I would still rather jump
on whether it's Ottawa, Detroit or Columbus to be one
of the teams in the East.

Speaker 4 (17:31):
So, Jonathan, with everything that Florida did, I'm having a
tough time seeing someone in the Eastern Conference if the
Panthers are healthy knocking them off now short price at
this point at plus one ninety five. But is there
anyone else in the East that you would like to
to actually beat Florida here in the playoffs?

Speaker 5 (17:48):
The problem in trying to decipher who to pick in
the East is strictly because of you know, what's going
on in the Atlantic. I mean, how does this end up?
Because really you do want to be that first place
scheme in the East and how you know, and not
have to play either, you know, if you're Florida, not

(18:09):
have to play Toronto or Tampa in round one. I
mean it does change everything. Look, I like what Tampa
did at the deadline. Bethiluski's played really well. Tampa is
going into a bit of a funk as well, I mean,
losing their last two games and what just you know,
scoring one goal right now in the last you know,
sixth periods of hockey. And as much as you know,

(18:31):
I like what Toronto has done at the deadline, I
just I still don't trust that team, So I don't
know I would lean to Tampa. I just think Florida's
played way too much hockey at the end of the day.
And you'll just see what, you know, how Aaron f
flad responds, you know, when he returns for what would

(18:52):
be Game three of the playoffs. I mean, that's a
big loss. And I mean, I don't know. I would
have to believe that Florida Panthers had some idea of
what was going to be happy with Aaron Ecklin when
they made the set Jones.

Speaker 2 (19:06):
Trains, Well, that's what I was going to ask you
with Florida in terms of just the mileage on these
guys' belt skates, whatever you want to call it. I mean,
this is back to back deep playoff runs to the
Stanley Cup Final, winning the most recent one. At a point,
team's just going to kind of collectively run out of gas. Now,
I get the odds are the best in the East

(19:27):
and inside two to one, you know, plus one ninety five,
I see on Fandle here to win the title. But
then there's, you know, just after that, by virtue of
you know, fading the team that's gone, you know, so
deep into June, back to back years. There's value in
the numbers. Carolina plus four to eighty, Washington five to one,
you mentioned, Tampa six to one, Toronto same number. Then

(19:48):
you start to get into the teams that are, you know,
fifteen to one or longer. So you know, is it
worth just sort of sprinkling multiple teams and hoping you
get it right and that it's not Florida?

Speaker 5 (20:01):
Yeah, I mean I think, Look, I think Washington. I'm
not a big supporter of the cast. I don't I
just don't like the roster. I mean, guys, for me
to win a Stanley Cup, you've got to have an
elite goaltender. Logan Thompson's good, I don't put him an
elite category. You have it to have a Norris Trophy
caliber defenseman. I think that they fit that with I

(20:22):
think Jacob Chickrin and John Carlson, either one of those
guys can slot into at least being a candidate for
the Norris. And you need to be yeah, you have
two strong centers. I don't love the Capitols down the middle.
I think I think they're a team that's built for
the regular season as opposed to the playoffs and saying
that they have an easier run to get to the

(20:43):
conference final than any of the teams in the Atlantic.
And so I think from that standpoint, there is some
value in playing Washington. Although I'm not crazy about him,
I do wonder like Sneaky if you want to, if
I was my long shot team is the Columbus Blue Jackins.
I know they lost the nights in New Jersey, the

(21:03):
nice big win against the Rangers. I just think if
you're going to take a team that's kind of down
far on the board, Columbus is the team for me.

Speaker 4 (21:12):
And then when we look out West, I think you
can make a solid case for any of the four
teams at the top of the of the odds board
here between Dallas, Edmonton, Colorado, and Vegas. I personally can't
trust Winnipeg, so I don't put them in that category.
But I love what Colorado did at the trade deadline,
Jonathan picking up Brock Nelson Charlie Coyle to be a
third line center, having him in a more natural role

(21:34):
and natural fit for him. Who do you like out West?
And it's going to be an absolute war to get
through this conference.

Speaker 5 (21:41):
Yeah, And the way things stand right now, I mean
you have all the work that both Dallas and Colorado
did it the deadline. I mean, as it stands now,
one of those teams is gone in the first round.
So it makes it hard to bet, you know, on
either one of those teams because you right now, I
still think Dallas is a realistic shot to win the Division,
and I got them at plus two twenty five about

(22:03):
ten days ago to win the Central. I think that,
you know, there's still a path. Their schedule is favorable,
and so if they can, if they can get themselves
in the first then yeah. Now with Colorado, look, just
as I said, Washington not struck down the middle. Colorado's
got in my opinion, they got two of the three components.
They've got the Noris Trophy defenseman and cal mccarr three

(22:25):
deep down the middle with McKinnon, Nelson and Coyle, you know,
and they've got a good enough blue line that their
goalie doesn't have to steal them games. He just he
just needs to make the first say he's black Mackenzie
Blackwood has played really well and looks closer to the
goalie that was drafted by the Devils. And Scott Wedgwood
has been a solid backup. But again it's really hard.

(22:47):
You know, well, I think that the two best teams
are in the central. You know, I'm still big on
the Golden Knights. I love you you know, they've got
the experience, I think, you know, they're they're four lines
deep and six you know, they're they're super deep on
the blue line as well. They've got a slightly easier
path to get there. So I think that there is
you know, I think throwing Vegas in there for sure,

(23:09):
because right now it's just it's hard because we just
don't know what's going to happen in the Central and
if Colorado and Dallas don't have to face each other.

Speaker 2 (23:18):
Jonathan Davis host the Ice Cap Show on Series x M,
NHL Radio. Vson's NHL betting analyst as well. He's on
Twitter at West Coast h k Y Jonathan, Always enjoy
it man. The Stanley Cup playoffs right around the corner
will be bugging you plenty.

Speaker 5 (23:33):
All right, guys, thanks for having me.

Speaker 2 (23:35):
Absolutely we will step aside as we continue to sweat
out show bets.

Speaker 1 (23:42):
If there are games to be played, there are bets
to be made.

Speaker 2 (23:46):
I'll bet you twenty bucks. I can get you gambling
forward the end of the day. No way, I'll give
you three to one ones to under.

Speaker 1 (23:55):
Here, get ahead of line movement, find in game value,
and here the ladies inside.

Speaker 4 (24:00):
It's from your favorite industry experts.

Speaker 2 (24:02):
This is my gambling. If I win, we all win.

Speaker 1 (24:05):
Tell your smart speaker to play that gambler. With Adam
Kaufman on w RKO on iHeartRadio.

Speaker 2 (24:21):
Welcome back. Let's get back to football. Patriots really busy,
especially on the defensive side of the ball. On Day
one of NFL free agency, the new league year officially
begins tomorrow when these signings trades. Things that have been
happening across the league can become official. Pants were very

(24:42):
very quiet today, However, does it matter.

Speaker 4 (24:46):
A moment of silence for Jacoby Verssett as he leaves.

Speaker 2 (24:51):
Yeah, I mean, guy was already gone. Let's be honest,
all right, let's uh, let's get into it. Let's let's
talk about what the Patriots have been doing, haven't been
doing what they're waiting for, uh, or we're waiting for
them to do. I'm I'm mildly distracted because I can't

(25:12):
fathom the way that our people's parlay just died with
the Milwaukee Bucks. But I'm gonna save that for next
segment with Sammy Chaudery because I need to get some
things off my chest. But it's, oh my God, like
there's there's cursed, and there's whatever the hell is going
on with us right now. Doug Kyde is here with
us from the Boston Herald. He is on Twitter at

(25:34):
Doug Kyde. Of course, Patriots Beat Reporter has the Pats
Chats podcast as well. Doug, how are you man? Uh?
Great until about two minutes ago, but outside of that,
I'll be fine.

Speaker 6 (25:50):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (25:51):
We were chatting earlier in the show, Doug about remaining
available free agents and sort of the the bigger names.
You know, we sawu of offensive guys in terms of
you know, wide receivers go off the board today. Not
that it was necessarily people that we expected to wind
up with New England, but just sort of monitoring names.
You know, you have DeAndre Hopkins leave Kansas City for Baltimore,

(26:15):
Nick Westbrook Akine has a new home, not you know,
coming off an almost double digit touchdown year at this
point in time. You know, you got Stefan Diggs out there.
Who there? It feels like there have been maybe some
quiet whispers around, but ACL injury mid season last year,
so I don't even know when he's going to be available,
let alone what you know his plans are for next season.

(26:36):
Cooper cup is obviously the one that everybody wants to
talk about. But the market, it does feel like for
New England and for anyone else for that matter, all
due respect to Mac Collins is drying up a little bit,
and Drake May needs some some targets. So where do
we go from here? Realistically?

Speaker 3 (26:56):
Yeah, it's yeah, Stefan Diggs is still out there, Mark
Cooper is still out there. Those are two guys that
I never really expected the Patriots to go after. Anyway,
Cooper Cup is probably the next domino it's going to
fall that the Patriots could potentially add. You know, if
he gets released tomorrow as expected, certainly would not be

(27:17):
surprised if they were in that market. But if that
doesn't pan out, then I think you probably have to
revisit some trade talks, whether that's Brandon Ayuk forty nine
Ers are kind of doing a fire sale right now.
You know, I don't know if Jakolie Myers is actually available,
but certainly worth calling the Raiders to see if he is,

(27:37):
and then if nothing else works out, then maybe you
called the Bengals about t Higgins again, figure out if
you could maybe potentially trade for him and then walk
him up to a long term deal. So there are
some options out there, not necessarily like the easiest options
outside of Cooper Cup, but there are still some possibilities

(27:58):
there for them to potentially add that number one wide
receiver that they so desperately need.

Speaker 4 (28:04):
So, Doug, your colleague at The Herald, Andrew Callahan, had
a nice story tonight about Cooper Cup and that there
might be legit mutual interest there between the Pats and
Cupp have you heard anything about this? Is there anything
that you can add to it? Like, are the Patriots?
Is this a serious consideration for the Pats tomorrow?

Speaker 3 (28:22):
I mean it has to be once he gets released
or if he gets released, and it certainly seems like
on his side there'd be some interest. So yeah, I
think it's it's definitely like the I don't know if
I want to call it like the most likely outcome
or where it is, but like, that's the easiest path
to adding a dependable wide receiver who might not be

(28:44):
your like traditional number one at this point in his career,
but someone who can certainly be like that dependable trusted
target that Drake may needs. And he certainly still has
the potential to be a thousand yard receiver in New
England and certainly dealt with some injuries. But yeah, it
seems to be. You know, we'll see exactly what happens,

(29:06):
because I think a lot of teams could use a
Cooper Cup. But yeah, I think that that would be
the next potential domino for the Patriots.

Speaker 2 (29:15):
You're talking about various options, and I realized that's what
I asked of you. But if you know now I'm
interrogating you. If we boil down to what's realistic, you know,
hey can't break so or even deeper than that Week
one of the season. Who's Drake may throw in two? Like,
do you believe that any of these names that we
have just floated out the three of us actually winds
up here, because there's you know, there's getting excited and

(29:38):
there's getting unrealistic, and I'm not sure where we're starting
to fall.

Speaker 3 (29:43):
You know, I would say it's touch put like a
percentage on or anything like that, But I would say
there's probably above fifty chance that they add one of
those guys, just because I think they know they have to,
Like they know they have to add a number one
wide receiver. They know they have to add to that

(30:03):
wide receiver group because right now, you know, mac Hollins
is like ideally a number four, maybe a number three
in this group. So they need to add a legit
wide receiver threat. And unless they take Travis Hunter and
just put them a wide receiver, but there's not a
super direct path in the draft to add that type

(30:25):
of player unless they trade back into the first round.
But even then, like the top end of this wide
receiver class is just not that great. So it's tough
to say because I know that they were all in
on Chris Godwin, So that tells me that they are
willing to pay top dollar to get a guy to
get a wide receiver. And if they're going after Chris

(30:46):
Gouty and like they're willing to go after Chris Godwin,
that means that they're willing to add a slot receiver,
which is what Cooper companies at this point in his career.

Speaker 4 (30:55):
So with all the moves the Pats have made this week,
it really felt like, you know, they tape a look
at just how many games last year they could not
get off the field, and Mike Rabel and his coaching
staff kind of came in and said, that's not going
to be the case in twenty twenty five. We're gonna
have guys that can actually stop the run here. It
felt like that was really their mission yesterday. Excuse me,

(31:15):
that they wanted to add to this defense and make
it much easier for Drake May and whatever he is
throwing to, whoever he's throwing to, that they might not
have to score so many points here if they do
want to get wins, that they're going to be all
the whole teams to low twenties, high teens.

Speaker 3 (31:29):
Yeah, generally looking that way, the defense has improved significantly
and like he just look at their depth start right now.
On defense, it's pretty much set. We'll see if Marcus
Jones winds up being the nickel cornerback, but like he
was fine in that role last year. But yeah, they
got the cornerback, they got the defensive end, they got
the defensive tackle to him, actually, they got the linebacker.

Speaker 6 (31:49):
Like, they got everything that they.

Speaker 3 (31:51):
Need on defense. So that does at least simplify things
in the draft. If for some reason they don't wind
up adding a left tackle a wide receiver before then
at least they know, Okay, our focus is on offense.
Our defense was bad last year, but with all these
pieces that we acquired this year, we should be back

(32:12):
up into that top half in the league.

Speaker 2 (32:15):
I remember, going back obviously, I don't know, was it
five years ago at this point in time, when you
know they they had that last big spending spree and
sort of shot the football world with the way they
came out to get judea On, John Hus Smith Hunter,
Henry who else, Kendrick Bourne, Nelson, Agalore, I mean, all
these names and a lot of them weren't names, and

(32:36):
there was a lot of genuine excitement around it. And
then most of those guys, I know Born still around,
as is Henry, but most of those guys didn't pan out,
you know, John hu Smith being probably the biggest swing
in a miss and Jude On you know, he couldn't
stay healthy and ultimately gets dealt away. But you know,
how do we Is there any sort of way of

(32:58):
you know, no, until you know that they're they're targeting
the right guys. You know, like I've already heard people
who followed the Eagles, for instance, more closely than I do,
you know, sort of pooh pooing the Milton Williams signing
like yeah, I mean he's good, but as you're worth that,
and knowing full well the Patriots need to overpay. That's

(33:18):
just where they are in the league at this point
in time. But you know, are are you do you
feel like they're getting the right guys?

Speaker 3 (33:26):
I mean, I'm sure some of these signings won't pan out,
because that's just kind of the way that the free
agency works. But you know, hearing before free agency started,
and since then, people viewed this as kind of a
smaller pool of elite or not even elite, smaller pool
of decent talent and free agency this offseason. So to

(33:49):
get a guy like Milton Williams who's twenty five, still
potentially an ascending player, that's that's the going rate for
that type of player. That's just what they have to
pay to get him.

Speaker 6 (34:00):
Like, if they.

Speaker 3 (34:01):
Weren't able to get him, the three agent class would
look so much worse.

Speaker 6 (34:05):
So they kind of had to.

Speaker 3 (34:06):
And I really do applaud them for preshually landing him.
And like, I don't know if he's gonna wind up
panning out to that big of a deal. People around
the league are kind of like wondering if he does
have that potential, that type of talent, But at least
it's someone who still has potential. And then like for
some of the other guys, maybe they overpaid a little
bit on harl Landry or Robert Spulane, but like, at

(34:29):
least these guys have been productive players in the NFL.
You look at the deal that like Dan Moore Junior
got from the Titans, Like Dan Moore Junior's been an
okay left tackle and he got paid twenty million dollars
like the deal that Wharton signed with the Panthers, which
was like eighteen million dollars a year. I'd rather wind
up with Milton Williams than then Wharton if those are

(34:51):
the going right at rates for both players, and I
think the Panthers probably would have preferred to wind up
with Milton Williams as well. So I don't know.

Speaker 6 (34:57):
It's it's kind of a given in free agency that
not everything is going to pan out perfectly, but at
least the Patriots know who these players are.

Speaker 3 (35:08):
Almost all of them have worked with some current Patriots coach,
so there's not a lot of mystery there. And they're
filling major needs on the roster, so I think they've
done a good job through two days so far.

Speaker 4 (35:20):
So one of those major needs, though, that they have
not addressed yet is left tackle Cam Robinson. Seems like
he's the one name left out there. What's your sense
of what their plan is at right now when it
comes to the left tackle spot.

Speaker 3 (35:32):
Yeah, I think it's possible that they could still be
in on Cam Robinson. It's it's probably a good thing
for them that he's still out there and that Dan
Moore Junior signs the first day for twenty million dollars,
that Ronnie Stanley gets whatever it is, twenty two million dollars,
and then Cam Robinson's still out there, and basically from
what I've heard, like he's still out there just because

(35:52):
he's not really viewed as that grade of a player.
So I'd be surprised at this point if he got
more that type of money that Dan Moore god and
that Ronnie Stanley got. So if they could bring him
in for I don't know, let's say like ten twelve
million dollars something like that, it's kind of a bridge
option that left tackle. Maybe then you also draft Will

(36:14):
Campbell or draft someone at the end of the first
round to begin the second round to be the left
tackle of the future. That's probably the best path right now.
I don't love not adding left tackle and then locking
yourself into drafting Will Campbell at number four overall, just
because I want if he's worth that, and I think
that ideally you'd like to have the option to trade

(36:36):
back if you need to from that four spot, and
if they trade back and miss out on him, then
you're just love without a left tackle.

Speaker 2 (36:44):
Doug Kyde with US from the Boston Herald again on
Twitter at Doug Kuyde and you know, the draft, it's
it's eons away. We have I'm sure we'll we'll have
you on again at some point in time before then
to take a look at what the Patriots are going
to do. How mock draft at that point in time
or shaking it and shaping up and uh, you know,
just just how many times are they going to trade

(37:05):
down to get more assets? The true Bill Belichick way.
But Doug, thanks so much.

Speaker 6 (37:09):
Man.

Speaker 2 (37:10):
Hopefully you got some semblance of a break today and
maybe they'll keep you a little busier tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (37:15):
Yeah, we'll see about that. It's kind of one of
those things where you are still on kind of pins
and deals that something that happened, so you can't really
leave the house, but at least you're not working as hard.

Speaker 2 (37:24):
Yeah, watching your phone when you're in the shafter, you're
going full shower, going full woae is what shafter used
to tell go. You know, like like you said, you
go to the bathroom, you're holding your thing in one
hand in the phone and the other. This is the
life of a guy on the beat. Doug, thanks man,
we'll talk soon.

Speaker 3 (37:42):
Absolutely done.

Speaker 2 (37:43):
All right, Well, come on back, NBA, the stupid Milwaukee Bucks.
We should be sweating alive people's parlay right now, and
the way that they lost was so crushing,
