Speaker 1 (00:08):
Oh yeah, you better believe it.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Seattle Sports Leader is in full blast while Greg Bell
is slumbering somewhere. I know he's slumbering. Sports Radio ninety
three point three KJR is on iHeartRadio, download the free
iHeartRadio app, betsports Radio KJR dot com, and we are
your exclusive home for Super Bowl fifty nine. I kind
(00:32):
of felt like slumbering before this show.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
It was more like.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
A dozen and doze off, wake up, conk out again.
There was a couch and three am involved. I'll explain
more of that.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
In the bed. Anyway, we need all the details on that.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
Mike Benton filling in for Greg Bell today, Christopher Kidd
as well, what's up Mike?
Speaker 1 (00:51):
Right across the glass. I'm tired, you're tired. Let's let's
start off with how the morning begin, because you hit
me up like, hey, Bud, it's looking real rough man.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
I am a stickler for being on time. I have
learned this through my parents. My wife is a fourth
grade teacher, so you know we're all about on time here.
And then early on in my career a couple of
times where you thought he it is a one pm bus,
says a gentleman's one pm. No, no, no, you find
(01:23):
out it's a one pm bus, doors closed, wheels out,
and you suffer the consequences if you are late. So
that kind of molded me and shaped me to where
I am now. So at ten am, show Chris for me.
My own body clock says nine am here be ready. Well,
circumstances being what they are. My wife teaches fourth grade,
(01:46):
as I said, she's got meetings upon meetings upon meetings,
all backed up.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
I got kids got to get to school as well too.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
And I live basically as far away from here going
to the north side as say our fearless Mayor of
Maple Valley lives in Maple Valley towards the south side,
basically like from my house to his house. To give
you an indication of how widespread we are, you know,
with our radius here as far as where we all live,
(02:14):
you get you can get from my house to Canada
in the exact amount of time. I live in North Everett,
so my kids get dropped off in say twenty four.
I checked the time and it's already pushing an hour.
I thought, okay, well, whatever this is midweek traffic. People
are back on the roads. YadA YadA, it's midweek. But
(02:34):
all of a sudden then eta about nine to twenty,
I go, okay, we're fine, we're fine. Jumps about nine
twenty eight. I text you and I go, hey, I'm
kind of pushing it here, just let you know. And
you know, it's no big deal. It's no big deal.
But then all of a sudden, nine thirty jumps about
(02:54):
nine thirty five, and I have a couple of beads
of sweat dripping down my face, casca all the way
to my nice Eddie Bower shirt.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
By the way, that I just got in the package.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
Additionally, and then it breaks into a flop sweat at
about nine thirty eight, nine thirty eight as well, and
I go, oh, no, oh no. So I text you
and I go, I'm kind of pushing nine forty here.
(03:26):
Uh is this going to be a problem. When you
went no, it's no big deal, but man, I was
just white knuckle in it here. When when you had
the sweaty palms on the wheel, it's it's bad.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
News, Mike. The good news, bad news. You made it
on time. Yeah, you're here. You're bringing good energy. But
I thought you should share that because I'm sure there's
someone out there that is running late to work and
is actually not gonna make it, but hearing your story
might calm their nerve a little bit. I hope it does.
Maybe they will in fact make it to work. I
(04:01):
hope it that despite looking at their phone and it's
saying you're gonna be two minutes later, or you're gonna
be within, You're gonna be there within the five minutes
that you're supposed to be there. You made it. You're
all good. Thank you.
Speaker 2 (04:13):
My Eddie Bower shirt is cleaning. I'm a proud partner
of Eddie Bower. By the way, I should specify that
as well too. Yeah, but yes, you made it. Mic congratulations. Actually,
so you remember the sheet that I gave you?
Speaker 1 (04:32):
Yes, here you should have mention that. By the way.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
Here Sports Radio ninety three point three KJRFM brings you
the one thousand dollars power Play Listen each week day
every hour of six am to seven pm for the
nationwide keyword to enter on our website at ninety three
three KJR dot com for your chance at one thousand dollars.
I'll get this down here, man. I'm I'm dripping with
coffee out of the pores right now. I think Apple
(04:58):
Maps helped me as well. I do at least have
to think how bad is this gonna get if I
didn't have maps, because we're all just going one way
at the same way.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
Oh, how about it? That could be a great four
nine four five one.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
Tell me four nine four five one to lumber dudees
x line what life was like without the I see,
I grew up a map quest also, so I did
I use map Quest?
Speaker 1 (05:21):
What else was there there was? I feel like there
are several other ways you can get maps, but none
of I think it was Yahoo Maps. Yeah, but nonetheless,
I remember I used to have to print that out
because I would take the bus to some places at
times and I would have to tell the bus friver
am Man's I need you to hop on the microphone
and tell me the street here that way I know
(05:44):
I need to get off. So this is the funness
or that question.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
You more of a maps person, or you're more of
an Apple Maps or whatever you have on your Android.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
I think whatever it is, and I think there's a gap.
So from ages twenty one to let's say fifty three,
they're probably in the phone.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
I'm forty four. I just turned forty four today as well, by.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
Fifty five and up. They've lived in Seattle their whole life.
For myself right now ten years or longer, they're probably
I know where I need to be. I know the locations.
I know Seattle very well. I don't use a phone.
I don't use a map. It's all in the head
because my uncle's that type of person. Shout out to
uncle said, he just has all the locations memorized. He
doesn't use maps. He's just like, just tell me the
(06:25):
exit and I'll figure it out from that.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
How far does he actually have the locations memorized, though,
because all the way down to Palla as far as
south as as.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
I want to say, maybe maybe ever now.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
See, I used to live in pew allup when I
was a kid. Okay, my dad graduated Federal Way High
class of seventy one. But you take me out of
you know, Snahomer's County a little bit, you know, further
south the shore line. I got to start using maps
here except for maybe Cracking Community, ice Plex on ludg
Aina t Mobile though, those usual hotspots.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
So yeah, that's how my uncle does it. There's put
me in pew oup.
Speaker 2 (07:02):
I need a map around though, I mean I'm forty
four now I'm not six.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
My app is my iPhone. Why that's why I use
the twenty one to about fifty three probably using the iPhone, yeah,
and then fifty five and up. It's all in the head.
I don't need a map, I don't need a phone.
I know where I'm going. You just give me an exit,
you give me a street. I will find my way
to that address.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
Four nine, four or five one? What are you using
if you can't use your phone here to get to
where you got to get to? How long is that
gonna take you as well? Anyhow, on the show today,
we got to catch up with this crack and TV
played by playvoice John Forestland.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
He, by the way, is in Utah.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
It's calling the Penguins Utah Hockey Club game on TNT tonight.
But we're going to dive into more than six y
four loss against the Anaheim Ducks with a crack in
last evening and a lot to peel back on this one.
Humel and also joining us at eleven, Clint Kubiak were
freshot that higher for the offensive coordinator position and all
(08:00):
already he has got thoughts, and we have a little
bit more to turn the key with you to unlock
the door for his thoughts. This might be the simple
three or four questions, or we're just gonna let Hugh
just roll on with it here.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
That's how you gotta do it. Man, Hugh explain why
the sky is blue? Well, buddy, you don't want me
to get into that. Let's get it going here. You're
in text at eleven thirty. People sometimes joke that, hey,
you put me on a podcast with Hugh and we
meg about five Hugh Milling, Mike Bentton a podcast they
could set a world record for longest podcasts ever?
Speaker 2 (08:33):
Should Should we try this here soon? An end of
the season thing?
Speaker 1 (08:36):
If if Hugh is willing to put in the time,
I guarantee you could definitely get it done, set a
world record. I don't know how much money y'all get
paid for setting a new world record, but I would
love for y'all to do it.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
Because there's one idea. Hockey is life. Football is life. No,
you guys should be football.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
We could give you four topics and let y'all roll
four topics. I think four will get it done. You
guys can do at least he on the mic.
Speaker 2 (08:58):
On the mic, you can ask you today, you on
the mic, how long if if they said you can
set a Genus world record, how long do you think
you'll Mike be in good podcast? I think I think
this might be a thing where I got to do
it at home and then I got to you know,
watch my wife and kids get in the door, and
I just say, hey, I'm wanna be a little bit
longer here. I'm gonna be a little bit longer.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
Very long.
Speaker 2 (09:19):
Uh crack and recap of last night. I want to
get to this.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
Do you want to do that? I know it hurts
because they how mad do you begetting? Sometimes? Do you
get during these games? Like I know, when you're on
the play, you can't really show it, but when you're
not and you're in the studio or you have.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
To show emotion because it's real, it's real here. I mean,
I mean you have to you have to show some
contained emotion. And I mean I mean, obviously in my job,
it's a network broadcast, so you know, you're obviously I
shouldn't use the word you know, you know you're beholding
here to time, but you are, and timing is everything.
It's rigid, and you got to say what you say,
(09:56):
get it in, be efficient, and get out, and then
you can kind of let your hair down, so to speak.
More when it comes to the local postgame stuff, Collins
texts everything here but last night six to four lost
here to the Anaheim Ducks for the Kraken. And sometimes
you look at a picture based on beautiful breaststrokes of color,
the easy flow of details, arrangements, themes I'm getting back
(10:18):
in here into my our class from college sophomore year.
Other times it's a mere splattering of a chaotic mess
and ladies and gentlemen. It pains me to say last
night was not a work of art on the crack
in side. Six or four lost to Anaheim. They're eight
points out of the playoff race, and they lost a
big chance to move within two points of the cut
(10:41):
line in the Western Conference. Calgary's got that last spot
and Calgary lost last evening. Before this season, there was
a pledge for a new look. There would be more offense,
and we've seen it a few times. They're capable of exploding.
Matty Vaniirz looks like he's starting to kind of figure
things out again. Coppocaco might be the best, one of
(11:03):
the best pickups in young franchise history right now playing
with them. They've been inseparable with Jayden Schwartz. But what
happened last night was a picture of an imperfect example
of just defense again rearing its ugly head. And this
is going to go back and forth between the whole
goaltending picture or the defensive picture as well. But at
(11:23):
times they didn't look prepared. They've lost eight games in
the second leg of back to back. Eight times a
played second game of back to back, they have lost
all of them this year. Look this up as well.
They averaged twenty five minutes and thirty two seconds per
game of trailing in a game. The only team who's
(11:45):
worse than the NHL is coming up here Thursday, and
that's the San Jose Sharks. And I had a conversation
with John forrest Lynd about this last night, and we're
going to get him on here at ten thirty.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
Owen.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
Eight in the second game of back to back isn't good,
but it's only the tip of the iceberg. There's a
defense that continues to mismanage the puck, leave shooters open
and in critical areas of the ice, and that's in
front of the net and also in between the faceop dots.
They called that the kind of the home plate area
(12:16):
that goes from the slot, slants out of the dots
as well and goes right to the front of the net,
and that's where you tend to find you're the highest percentage,
your biggest chance of scoring goals. So there's that. There's
a power play that continues to pass up quality shots
and they are struggling to produce. Two nights ago in
(12:37):
Edmonton they had a five on three that they squandered
and that left Vince donelivid after the game. And last
night they filled to eighth worst in the NHL. And
the power play, there's a goaltending picture. It's night and
day right now with Joey Decord and Philip Grewbauer and
the day and age where you have one goalie playing
seventy games and the other with twelve. They're over. They're over,
(13:01):
and you have to have a one A and a
one B both playing well will be a playoff team.
Kracking got that two years ago when they had grew
Bauer and Martin Jones, but Joey Decord's right now the
sixth best goalie in the league for say percentage, good
stat to measure a goalie. He's fit best in the
league for a deeper metric, and that's called goals saved
above expected. Basically, it's a it's a stat that quantifies
(13:24):
a goalies' performance versus the league norm. Philip Grubauer paints
to save for me right now, he is last in
the NHL among goalies who played ten games. Grew Bauer
say percentage eight six six, second to last in the NHL.
Joey Decord is six best in the NHL at nine
seventeen and sensing the reaction last night during postgame coverage,
(13:49):
there's a ton of frustration where things are headed the
crack and are falling out of this playoff race more
and more by the day. So if you're tuning in
and you're a hockey fan and what's your where's your
head at right now on this season and what they
have to do four nine, four five one, everything, Yes, I.
Speaker 1 (14:07):
Mean we have you on every weekend. It feels like
we're regurgitating the same thing and trying to ask it
in exact way. But thank you Mike for giving different
analysis week in and week out, especially when they go on.
We try when they go two steps up and then
four steps backward.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
We gotta be honest here about this. I mean, and
I go back and look at you know what happened
last night? You put Grubauer in Hey listen, four of
the five goals weren't his fault. I mean they all
said he was let out to dry. He was let
out to dry.
Speaker 1 (14:32):
Alchis time out timeout, come out? Happy birthday. By the way,
I almost forgot you're about to You're really good. We
couldn't even make it out of the first segment here.
Now you was really john to just come on the
show and just have a great, great show and do
your stuff later and act like you didn't just have
a I tried to sneak under the radar with it. No. Yeah,
happy birthday, thank you, thank you. How's it feel?
Speaker 2 (14:54):
I'm forty four? I kind of feel like I'm thirty four.
Speaker 1 (14:57):
Here we go.
Speaker 2 (14:58):
The fact I need more caffeine puts me at a
different age right now. I think, out of respect to
those of the different age, I won't say that because
I want to keep listeners here. But I got this,
and I got cracking weekly coming up to night seven
to eight pm. I'm gonna get Dan Rusanowski on San
Jose Sharks Radio voice. Get that done. Family's gonna have dinner.
(15:20):
Favorite pizza place as well, nearby pineapples on pizza.
Speaker 1 (15:24):
No, all right, well I'm done talking. I'd rather do
a meat lovers. I've meat lovers all day, man. I
not like pineapples on a pizza.
Speaker 2 (15:32):
Man, It's an acchoir taste.
Speaker 3 (15:34):
I think.
Speaker 1 (15:36):
You guys in pineapples and pizza. Pineapples on pizza. This
might get ugly. There might be a bunch of Chris.
Turn off your mic.
Speaker 2 (15:41):
You've actually had me priced me before I actually picked
the pineapples off the pizza. Here, I'll put it in
my fruit cup, but not on a pizza. Fair enough,
fair enough anyhow. So I mean just wrapping up the
whole cracking thing and grew Bowery. You can't blame for
the five that he let in, but the one goal
by Jackson Leacne fifty feet out saw clin not pretty.
(16:01):
So this is a team that's heavily prioritized winning. They're
putting it all together, but yet putting it all together
has a whole different meaning and they're still in search
of that next year is there's still eight points out
of a playoff spot. Plus we're going to get to
Clint Kubiak the hiring on that.
Speaker 1 (16:17):
If you can give out the keyword one more time
in case those that are just jamming us, that's too
that we're going to get to Clint Kubiak in this.
Speaker 2 (16:23):
But also want to remind you as well, enter this
nationwide keyword on our website that's pay reminder for you.
Pay enter that right now ninety three to three KJR
dot com here for the one thousand dollars power play again.
Keyword is pay Enter at ninety three three.
Speaker 1 (16:40):
KJR dot com.
Speaker 2 (16:42):
So we're gonna get to the Clint Kubiak thing. And
I got the Seahawks Chris, so we're gonna get hum
millan on. They had to get this right, and we've
had the talk of the issues. Is this a geno thing,
is this an offensive line thing? You know, what does
a tight end position do here? For all of this, Ultimately,
for me, it was a safe bet and you had
to go with the safe guy because Ryan grub it
(17:02):
was the obvious.
Speaker 1 (17:03):
Hey, let's get a husky guy.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
In here and see him work and you see if
you can, you know, chop away and you know, carve
out some NFL chops. Those days are over there. So
incomes Klint Kubiak, who's kind of a wanderlust. But where
this offense starts to make it smooth is who is
calling the plays. And if they can convince Gino Smith
to stay long term, then that may be the guy
you need, feeding you the plays to get him and
(17:26):
the rest in gear great history working with quarterbacks in
the NFL, and we'll get he you on this later on,
where it's kind of a chicken and egg type of thing.
Just like in the hockey side we mentioned defense goaltending,
but you got in no c. But is this a
system or the players? Four nine four five one.
Speaker 1 (17:45):
It's funny when I said my comment, I can't even
get it out. When I said some of my tics
and slow come on. When I said someone might told
me to turn off my mic for putting pineapples on pizza,
the homie Jerry Brewer texted me, Chris, turn off your mic.
You you you have been removed.
Speaker 2 (18:06):
You have been banned pineapple on pizza?
Speaker 1 (18:08):
Yes or no?
Speaker 2 (18:10):
Yeh.
Speaker 1 (18:10):
I'm the guy that's standing alone in this world of
pineapple on pizza.
Speaker 2 (18:14):
Oh listen, this is going as smooth as they can
get here for ten am and me just getting into
the building about fifteen minutes prior. So honestly, this is
this is as best as I can hope for right here.
Speaker 1 (18:25):
You made it though.
Speaker 2 (18:25):
Now we're gonna get to Jim Bowden's comments too. Yesterday
and he was on with Softy and Richard L. Fane
during the four PM hour and hey, listen, we're gonna
go down this road Mariners and psychoanalyze it over and over.
Speaker 1 (18:37):
Yeah, you know, right now the ten to noon slide
listeners don't really want to hear about it, but at
ten we will play you that audio because it's important.
Speaker 4 (18:45):
You know.
Speaker 1 (18:45):
I can't wait.
Speaker 2 (18:47):
Jim Bowden said so much good and so many truth bombs.
I mean, you even talking about.
Speaker 1 (18:52):
The batter's eye. We hitters away, tease it. Leave it
at that.
Speaker 2 (18:57):
I'm not gonna get more of the way here the
gun on me. You're fine, you're good, You're good anyway.
Speaker 1 (19:03):
But yeah, he said, he said a lot.
Speaker 2 (19:05):
I think that we're gonna get to it brings up,
brings the questions up of what do you do to
fix this thing.
Speaker 1 (19:11):
I mean, it's a.
Speaker 2 (19:11):
Pitcher's park, it will be a pitcher's park, it may
forever be a pitcher's park. But I mean you get
a little bit of a bumping offense still, who's out there?
How much can that help you? And imagine maybe a
few an extra bat or two from out the free
agent market in this lineup because Pete A. Lonzo is
still out there, Kyle Tucker was out there, he's gone.
(19:33):
And keep hearing about Alex Bragman as well. So I
mean this is where it's gonna really really kick in.
You got that great pitching staff, but you don't want
to squander their window and just be a team maybe
happy to just get into the dance and see how
far they can go. So, I mean, Jim Bowden brought
up some pretty sharp comments on this, and I can't
wait to share more of that with you. But we're
gonna get to more with Johnny Forzen coming up here
(19:55):
and break down last night six or four lost and
we're the crack and move ahead right now heading into
Thursday against San Jose. Johnny's coming up next on ninety
three three KJIRFM.
Speaker 1 (20:06):

Crack and Hockey Network. King five Kong TV as well.
I believe he's in Utah right now. Johnny, Eagles or Chiefs.
So you got in the Super Bowl.
Speaker 4 (21:26):
I've been cheering for the Kansas City Chiefs MIC since
nineteen seventy. That's not going to change.
Speaker 2 (21:33):
You're a man of consistency. I've always said so. Yeah,
I've always said so.
Speaker 1 (21:37):
I went to college with Spags.
Speaker 4 (21:39):
He's a friend of mine. Wow and uh yeah, and
so nothing's changing. Chiefs will win.
Speaker 1 (21:46):
How about you share that number. We'd love to get
Spags on. That's not happening, But anyway, what's.
Speaker 2 (21:53):
Your favorite Spag story, Johnny, if we can, if we
can get one out of you.
Speaker 4 (21:58):
He was a Division two split end when they used
to call receivers or wide out split ends. He was
scheming in those days to do a lot of different things,
which included, you know, trying to formulate a way that
in a path that he would get into coaching someday.
I knew it was very possible, and he was about
(22:19):
three years ahead of me in school. It was my
ra my freshman year and yeah, I got a lot
of stories I can't go into.
Speaker 2 (22:25):
My It never ceases it to amaze me every time
I get job there there, we would incriminate both of us.
Speaker 1 (22:32):
I do want to keep my jobs going down to it.
Speaker 4 (22:35):
We were young and dumb, and now we're old and
dumb a couple.
Speaker 1 (22:39):
Just one thing has changed, that's it.
Speaker 2 (22:41):
I was there back in the day and in my
twenties and just you know, thank god there's no social
media back then as well too, Johnny, are you and
you saw right now three and three? If I'm not mistaken,
I am.
Speaker 4 (22:52):
I'm in Salt Lake.
Speaker 2 (22:53):
Yes, you told me to stay off the coffee last night.
How how do you do this so well? A city
to city, playing to play and boom, you're all set
to go for seven o'clock.
Speaker 1 (23:02):
Oh, I don't know.
Speaker 4 (23:03):
You know, and you share this.
Speaker 1 (23:06):
We love the craft and we love the game.
Speaker 4 (23:08):
And I mean, if you keep that ahead of everything,
it wards off the evil spirits, it wards off, Fatigue,
it wards off, you know, where you feel like you
just can't get enough energy to do something. I'm traveling
virtually every day this season with the amount of work
I have, and thank god, I do no problem.
Speaker 1 (23:26):
You know.
Speaker 4 (23:27):
The hardest thing is just cramming the time in to prep,
you know, But you have to figure out a way
to do it on airplanes a lot when you're traveling
on a day of an event like I did this morning,
and once that's put to bed, once I'm prepped and
ready to go, I relax, and then it's just a
matter of doing the game. So we'll have one here
tonight Pittsburgh and Utah and get a few days off
(23:50):
before Sunday at home.
Speaker 2 (23:51):
You're a man of incredible work ethic. That's why I
admire you for so many reasons here, that's why it's
helped me out in my line of work. But last
night's six to four loss to Anaheim europeupstairs and the
TV booth, I mean, just give this to us straight here.
What was the biggest concern defensively for you last evening?
Speaker 4 (24:08):
Well, I think the problem that has been evident all season,
and there's a few buzzwords that have been used by
the coach and some of the players in terms of
how they want to play, and that one word that
resonates with me, Mike is connected. And they're attempting to
get connected, especially defensively, and for me, they haven't been
(24:29):
able to do that. And when they're not connected in
the defensive zone, they turned the puck over. They're not
able to navigate through the second leg of a back
to back. You know, teams that are systematically connected defensively
play in those circumstances better than the Kraken have played
all year, in my opinion. So the same issues exist. Yes,
(24:52):
there's been some strides made recently and they've had some
really good performances, and they show an ability to press
the other team and they have the puck. They show
the ability to for check aggressively and create some havoc
when they're on the attack. It's on the way back
that's a problem for the Crack and it has been
a problem most of the season, and last night again,
(25:13):
you know Philip Grubauer doing everything he can do to
keep the puck out of the net. There's probably a
goal or two he'd like to have back. But you're
fatiguing a goalie who hadn't started a game in ten
hadn't been in the net since January twelfth, has had
his problems this year. You got to give him the
best chance at doing his thing, and they didn't. They
(25:36):
hung them out to dry. Those aren't my words, that's
what the coach said after the game. So you know,
you wonder why, you know, you're in late January, you
just have a handful of games left before the four
Nations break. You wonder why these issues are still, you know,
prevalent in their team game.
Speaker 1 (25:53):
John, how much do you read into the goaltending situation
and where the kracking go from here?
Speaker 4 (25:59):
Well, I think it's I think it's an easy call
that Joey Decord gets the lion's share of the games.
But you're going to have to play, you know, Grubauer,
and I wouldn't make any determinations on what the prospects
are for Grubauer based on last night. I know he's
had his struggles, you know, the two weeks two weeks before,
that's quite evident, the game in Columbus, the game in Detroit.
(26:23):
But again there's other things there, as they say, there's
other fish to fry the questions and answers as far
as that position will be in the off season, with
Grubauer still having some time remaining on their contract, We'll
see what happens there. The Cord has signed an extension,
as you guys know, so you know, moving forward, Joey
(26:44):
Decord is taking a step after step here to make
himself a regular, make himself a true starting goalie in
the NHL. It's it's been an exciting process to watch.
Speaker 2 (26:55):
We get a lot of questions in the power play,
which took a big hit Monday, Johnny, and they got
a goal last night, but numbers wise, this is still
a sinking thing going on right now. Ultimately, how do
you look at this with personnel or how they're managing
shot volume.
Speaker 4 (27:11):
They don't seem to be organized on entry. There's some
indecisiveness when they gain entry. There's certainly once they get
to their sets and over this last stretch where they've
really struggled, and let's just look at the last two games.
They're slow with the puck and what does that mean.
That usually means there's some indecisiveness in terms of where
(27:34):
people are supposed to be or they're lacking confidence. And
I think when you don't have success at anything, your
confidence gets drained. And with hockey players, when they're playing,
you know, without confidence, they're slow. When they are confident,
they're convicted, they know where the puck's going. They're quicker,
there's a snap to it. There's no snap with their
(27:56):
power play. They can work it around as much as
they want. And the other teams know this now, so
they game plan against it and they let them do it.
They keep them to the outside, they let them, let
them have their way. They have a hard time getting
to the interior of the ice. There's a hard time
getting you know, screens, and then by the time the
point guys get the fuck, whether it be done or montour,
(28:19):
there's no shooting lanes because of the slowness of their
power play. That all comes with the struggle, and all
struggling power plays, no matter which team we're talking about,
probably have the same characteristics. But for me, it's how
organized they are coming up the ice, how fluid they are.
By the time they get to the attacking blue line.
There seems to be a second thought, and that second
(28:39):
thought he either kills the play and there's a clear
for the other team, or that second thought causes an offside,
or it's a harmless rim that goes around the boards
the other team gets to it. It's a battle and
sometimes they win those battles, and sometimes they don't, and
more and more often than that, they don't. And that's
why I believe their power play has been at the
bottom of the League most of the.
Speaker 2 (28:59):
Season, Johnny, I think one question that we're getting answers
here maybe, I think is Matty Banier's and where he's
headed a long term because he Compo Coco and Jaden
Schwartz have looked fantastic. I think in this sense, have
you do you think that we've turned the corner here
for Benier's long term?
Speaker 4 (29:18):
Yeah, because I think Maddie's getting into a game that
is right up his alley. You know, he's going to
be a solid two way center and a long time,
you know, component of of a winning team in his career.
I'm not sure it's going to be as the one a.
I'm not sure he's going to be the the top
end center, but he can be that number two center
(29:38):
that pushes a one and delivers you know, mid range
points with a solid, you know, three zone game. To me,
that's the steps that he's taken this season that happened
before the acquisition of Coppocco. Since they acquired Coco, he
has opened up room for him. He has allowed uh
Beaniers some to gain some i to utilize his speed
(30:02):
to be more creative because of Coco's management of the
puck when he has it and his size, and then
Schwartz on the other side is a pros pro and
you know he's very creative too, and they all seem
to play off each other very well, so the line works.
But I think Maddie had gotten to a better place
than he was in his second year where and I
(30:23):
don't put a lot of credence. Most people don't anymore
into plus and minus as a stat but he was
a minus player in a big way. And when you
see plus in a big way and minus in a
big way, that's usually a trend. Is usually can lead
you down a path of what's wrong. I think in
Maddie's follow up to the Rookie of the Year, he
pressed so much he lost some of his defensive consciousness.
(30:43):
That's come back this season, and that's good because he's
been a plus player in a big way most of
the year, no matter who he's played with. But now
he has two line mates that gel with him. It's
good to see. So I hope now you know, you
look at things to hang a hat on as we
go to on the stretch after the break, it's does
that trend continue for number ten?
Speaker 3 (31:04):
And how.
Speaker 4 (31:07):
Does he finish his season? And if he finishes his
season strong, that's going to be great because that's a
question answered that has to be answered for this franchise
because given his contract extension, as you know, it's a
big piece here. He has to hit. He has to
be a very good top six player for this team
moving forward.
Speaker 2 (31:24):
Yeah, that takes me back to about a couple of
weeks ago when I talked with John Hayden and I
mentioned who was the one guy that you saw with
his work ethic and you think he gets it. First
name out of his mouth was Matty Beniers. And you
talk about pros pro, You're a pros pro. Johnny, thank you.
You're a saint. You're a scholar and we all know
that you're about the chiefs here when the big game comes.
(31:46):
You've got a big game here tonight on National TV.
Speaker 1 (31:48):
Have a great call, ma, man.
Speaker 4 (31:50):
Well, the closest I'll get to a saint is that
my buddy Spags was the head coach of the That's
about it.
Speaker 2 (31:56):
I will save some of the stories here for the
book later on. Whenever that Johnny, thank you, appreciate you,
my man.
Speaker 4 (32:03):
Thanks, guys, appreciate it all right.
Speaker 2 (32:05):
That's John Foresland joining us Cracking TV play by play.
He was on the call last night on King five
cong TV as well for the six to four loss
Crack into the Anaheim Ducks out in Utah now this
evening for the national TV call for the Penguins as well.
That's at least one big thing that Crack and have
go on right now. That's an unanswered question that's becoming
a little more answered right now. Is Manny Benier's the
(32:25):
tough stretch he had a year and a half. The
more and more that they can get answers, I think
for what they're trying to fill in for the forwards here,
that's progress. Now they're trying to figure out matters defensively,
especially the power play was Johnny brought up here, and
that's going to be a very very interesting conversation as
we get here to the end of this season as well.
(32:45):
Cracking again hosting San Jose tomorrow night on air six thirty.
Right back here on these airwaves, I'll have Cracking weekly
also tonight seven to eight pm. Dan Rousanowski going to
be with us as well, more of a conversation that
you'll hear with Johnny Forestland right here. Chris is going
to make us drop on that program also between seven
to two eight pm as well. Looking forward to it anyway,
(33:06):
speaking up more big news. We got more to share
here on Jim Bowden's comments, and I thought plenty of
truth bombs and what does it say right now about
the Mariners their direction and the whole pitchers park thing
as well. More on that after this on ninety three
three KJRAFN All right, Mike in for Greg Bell again.

That is Sunday, February nine, tuned in to hear Super
Bowl fifty nine live from New Orleans, all thanks to
our friends Emerald Queen Casino.
Speaker 1 (33:48):
Of course.
Speaker 2 (33:48):
The broadcast starts at eleven a m. Sharp Well for
about a couple of weeks from pictures and catchers reporting
for spring training, aren't we Are you ready?
Speaker 1 (33:59):
Are you set?
Speaker 2 (34:00):
Can you feel it? You want to move the fences
in a little bit. I want to add some more bets. Well,
something pretty good that Jim Bowden dropped on with Softy
and Dick yesh day and here's Softy in Dick with
Jim Bowden.
Speaker 4 (34:12):
What do you make of the job the Mariners have
done over the offseason so far to make this team better?
Speaker 3 (34:16):
Jim, I mean, it's disgusting, gross, embarrassing, and it makes
you want to go to the toilet and throw up.
I mean, look, here's the thing about the Mariners, and
let's let's be honest, right because I don't think there's
a baseball person that will disagree with this. They're starting
rotation one to five is as good as there is
in baseball. Now. Some can argue Dodgers Philly is your Yankees. Okay,
(34:38):
that's fine, I get it. At the very least, it's
top four out of the thirty teams, which means if
you get to October, you have a legitimate shot a
running the table and winning a World Series. Like you
have a shot, you know, the hardest thing to get
in baseball today, the hardest thing to get is a
starting an elite starting rotation. Right. And what are the
(35:02):
teams that I just mentioned that are with the Mariners
of the best rotation, The Dodgers, the Yankees and the Phillies,
three of the biggest payroll teams in our sport, right?
Why because they can afford to do it now, Seattle's
not in that arena because they have so many young starters.
They were able to do it with Logan Gilbert and
George Kirby, et cetera, et c. Bryce Miller, Brian Wu
(35:25):
and then of.
Speaker 1 (35:26):
Course Castille who they pay.
Speaker 3 (35:28):
So here's the thing. When you have that kind of rotation,
that's when as an owner, a GM or a president,
that's when you overspend beyond your budget to try to win.
When you have that window, you don't wait until that
window is closed. Then it's too late, and all of
a sudden, all these starting pitchers are that good. Guess
what happens to them. They end up making thirty a
(35:49):
year or thirty five a year. That's where they're all going,
and then you can't afford them anymore, or then you
have to trade them a year before they make that
kind of money. So the point is, when you have
a chance to win, you can't look at your you
can't go into your counting department and be told, well,
you're gonna lose ten million or fifteen million or twenty
million if you do this or do that. No, no, no, no no.
This is when you go to the playoffs, you give
(36:11):
a shot to win a World Series, and you build
the baseball back in your city, and then the fans
will understand when you have to break it down. They'll
be okay with it if you win. They're okay with
star players leaving. Let me give you an example, the
Houston Astros. They said goodbye to George Springer. They still won.
They said goodbye to Carlos Korea, they still won. They
(36:34):
just said goodbye to Kyle Tucker. They still have a
chance to win. So I guess my point is, go
win now. They'll understand when you break it down, But
you got to spend now.
Speaker 2 (36:45):
Troop bombs from Jim Bowden of The Athletic with Safty
and Dick That by the way up or more on
safti Indeck's podcast page on the iHeartRadio app. You got
that pitching staff? Do you want to blow it? They're
just one to two bats away. I think before we
break I look at it this way, the way the
(37:05):
Mariners played the Dodgers last year. Do you remember when
Brian wo just mowed them down for five six innings.
He was almost unhittable. He was almost unhittable, And we
were hearing that he's got stuff now to be maybe
a Game two starter in the World Series. Jim Bones
not wrong, and you're one to two bats away here?
(37:25):
What are you doing? What are you wasting? Four nine
four five one? We mentioned do you bring the fences
in more?
Speaker 1 (37:32):
How do you feel about that?
Speaker 2 (37:33):
They've already done it once here, already move the batter's eye,
shift the batter's eye as well. Four nine four or
five one. We got to get to break here. We're
gonna get more into the klint Kubiac thing. Hugh Millen
