Marnin. It's the Health and Wellness Show on one of
three point five FM and five sixty am WDVOC. It
is a pleasure to have you with us. Thank you
so much for joining us this morning, on this twenty
seventh day of September. My name is Gary David. If
you're just down joining us, good morning to you. Reminder,
our best game Cock coverage is on the air at
four thirty this afternoon as the game Cocks try to
(00:27):
get back on the winning track. Take it on the
Kentucky Wildcasts over at Willy B Christopher Thompson and the
team starting up at four thirty and of course once
that final whistle blows and let's hope it's a successful
life of the game Cocks. Taking your calls on the
fifth quarter post game calling show here on wvoced of
course on the iHeartRadio app. Now coming up on the
Health and Wellness Show this morning, we'll be talking about
(00:48):
lions over at Carefrey Bow Clubs out at Lake Murray. They.
I don't know if he's gonna drop it on us today,
but sometime in the real dear future, maybe next time
we get together with the latest he's gonna be talking
about to some special deals they've got here the voting
off season, although with tempers like we had last week,
I don't think this is the voting off season. But
it's a great time to get on the lake right now.
(01:09):
Carefree Bow Clubs Matts will be in in just about
twenty minutes or so. We'll also be talking to John
Farley and Matthew Terry from Preservation Specialists about your retirement
goals and knees and peace of mind. Okay, first up,
it's our old friend Larry Harris, the owner of Classics Systems,
who joins us here to get things started on the
(01:29):
Health and Wellness Show. Larry, good morning.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
Good morning, game blessing to be here.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
It's always wonderful to have you here, my friend. Let's first,
let's start off this morning and talk about one of
the many things you do, and that is helping folks
determine a do they have mold, be what level of
mold they have, and see what to do about it,
how to remediate it.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
Well, that is a problem in a lot of areas,
not only homes, but commercial businesses and different facilities. And
when you see a discoloration without testing, you don't know
what it is. So a lot of folks have airborne
mold and it can cause side effects which can be
rashes on the body, headaches, fatigue, disorientation, eye infection, ear infections,
(02:20):
all kind of mystery illnesses can develop from airborne mold.
So if we do air testing in a property in
the morning, we can have the lab report back that
same day, that afternoon, so we can have a protocol
to remediate the problem if that is required. What exactly
(02:41):
is mold, Well, mold is a fungal growth and is
caused by water intrusion, high relative humidity. If the humidity
is above sixty percent in humidity, that'll cause mold to
grow on walls, ceilings out of where it is. The
higher the relative humidity above sixty percent, the more mold
(03:05):
growth you can have. And then if sixteen percent moisia
is in a surface, mole.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
Will grow sheet rock, whatever.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
And so if you've got dust and morsia, that's the
two criteria, the food and the morstures it calls mole to.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
Grow and some mold's worth than others. Right.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
Oh, absolutely, the most deadly mold under human is a
black mold that was in Cleveland, Ohio called stachybotros atra
that actually was airborne in thirty homes that were thirty
infants three months old or younger bleeding from the nose
in the mouth and brought into East Rainbow and Baby's
(03:44):
Children Hospital. And doctor dor Dearborn was a head emergency
runing physician and he said after the first three infants
that were brought in, he called the CDC. There were
forty percent high income, sixty percent low income. They all
hadas And in Cleveland you've got basements. The water got
into the vertical two by fours. It caused the black
(04:06):
mold to grow in the basement is where the air
conditioning is. It brought all that airborne mole up into
the breathable airspace and ten infants drowned on their own blood.
At three months old, infants have rapidly growing blood vessels,
and the airborne mold got into the lungs and caused
lesions on the blood vessels and ten infants drowned.
Speaker 1 (04:29):
On the other side of that, is it such a
thing as a mold that, yeah, it's unsightly, but it
won't hurt you.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
Well.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
One of the most common molds is aspergillous and penicillium
is very present every time, and of course penicillium comes
from mole, which is an antibiotic. But all of these
can have adverse effects. So regardless of what type of
mold it is, there are ten very toxic molds platisporum
(04:59):
called hilaria my silly smut. There's just several of them.
And so if you don't test, you don't know what
you do.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
You've mentioned these infants and they're rapidly growing blood vessels
and what happened there in Cleveland all those years ago.
Are there folks with certain underlying conditions that will be
more susceptible to being very adversely impacted by that is.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
Correct, Gary. We had a client back in four that
had This lady worked in a school and she got
airborne mold into her blood and her doctor said she
couldn't go back to work until they helped to remove
that mold from the blood system. And so she actually
(05:44):
heard me on the radio and I asked if she
could try one of the airpeer fires. We let her
try it for three days. It helped her so much
she called me up and said, may I take this
to my doctor? And not only did she do that,
but the doctor wrote her prescription for the air verifire
and her insurance pay for that was a remarkable situation.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
We're talking. Yeah, uh, you mentioned you keep several times
you mentioned the airborne molder. There are other types of mold.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
Sure, there's there's I do cross space inspections and I've
found mold on floor joists and cross space every color
of the rainbow, green, yellow, orange, bread, there's. The color
of the mold depends on the food that is feeding on.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
So this is a this is a living organism kind
of thing.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
Well, it's a fungal growth and the only way you
can identify it is to take a sample and take
it to a laboratory to have them perform my cross
percy and identify what it is.
Speaker 1 (06:48):
So you might see some discoloration somewhere, it not necessarily
be mold, That's exactly right. Well what would that? What
would those other things.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
Could be staining? Uh, yeah, I've seen I found that.
I had a client years ago in Valentine that had
mold in the basement on a concrete block wall, and
we put an air pure fire in there, a nozone blaster,
and within overnight it eradicated all the mold that quickly.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
Huh. Yeah, Let's say let's take that example for a second,
because you go in and this is in your I
think we talked about this a couple of weeks ago.
You got the air purifiers and we'll talk more about those,
But you mentioned that you got like this this super
omso blaster kind of thing, right, the industrial strength kind
of thing. So in that instance, overnight it got rid
of the mold. But once you pull it back out,
(07:38):
I'm thinking in that situation, it's probably a pretty good
chance it's going to come back unless you do something else.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
Well, the cause of mold again is high relative humidity
or moisture. So if you have a high relative amenity issue,
then you need to address that and get it get
rid of it. Or if you've got water leaks, a
water leak can cause mold to grow, so you've got
to find the source of the morsture and stop it.
Then you can dry it out and eradicate the mold.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
How effective again, because oftentimes the place is most prone
to this basements, crawl spaces. Uh, you know, crawl space
encapsulation is a big thing. Now effective it is?
Speaker 2 (08:20):
Uh, The most important thing is to have a dhumdifier
if you have excessive moisture in a crawl space, and
we've installed DHU modifiers and in crawl spaces that have
a hose a little tube that evacuates that moisture out
of the crawl space, so you don't have to go
down there and dip the buck get the bucket and
(08:42):
pull the water out and put it back in there.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
Right yeah, that's that's never fun to do. So you
if you think you have an issue with mold, first
up is to is to call this guy right here,
Larry Harris. But goes, go ahead and give us your
phone number right now.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
Three six two six two seven four eight six six.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
Four eight Okay, So get a hold of Larry. So
first step is to come out again. As you mentioned,
if you come out early enough in the day, you
could know by that afternoon absolutely if you got an
issue or not. Right yeah, okay, So that's step one. Well,
making the call step one, Larry, coming out testing step two.
Speaker 2 (09:18):
What happens next, Well, once we identify the mold and
the source of the mold, you got to find out
whether you've got a water leak, a roof leak, plumbing leak,
I did a client in Hilton Head that had a
three story house a basement, first and second floor, and
they had a washing machine that the hose broke and
(09:39):
it flooded the whole first floor, which is above the basement,
and a neighbor of there saw water coming out of
their garage in the basement and he called them. They
were out of the country and they had to govern
and cut the water off because the water was running
from a broken hose and a dishwasher. So you know,
you never know what happens. We did another come Marshall
(10:00):
building one time. They had black mold from the top
of the wall about two inches wide.
Speaker 1 (10:05):
All the way to the bottom.
Speaker 2 (10:06):
And when we removed the sheet rock, we found a
pin hole in a small quarter inch PVC waterline and
the water was dripping down the wall and it calls
that mold to grow.
Speaker 1 (10:19):
Yes, the other part, you've got to identify the source
of this coming back. And I can tell you know,
is this more science or luck to be able to
actually track down the source of the well.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
Were also we're also an infrared thermographer and I took
the core so I have an infrared camera that will
reveal where the source of the water is coming from.
Speaker 1 (10:41):
So you don't have a terrible bunch of stuff to
try to here that it's not whackable.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
We lit a lot of tools that we use in
this business. Gerea and infrared camera is a valuable too.
We also have penetrating moisture meters and non penetrating moisture readers.
If the moisture level gets above sixteen percent, mole will grow.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
Okay, that's good enough. Save you a lot of time
and most importantly a lot of money agen as a
home or business owner. So you've identified it to be mold.
You've identified the source. So now you get two things
to do. Number one, fix whatever's causing it to begin with, right,
(11:20):
and then number two, get rid of what's there. How
did that work?
Speaker 2 (11:24):
That's correct, But before you do that, you've got to
find out what the level of moisture is. Because you've
got excessive moisture. You've got to evacuate all that moisture
of water, and then you've got to dry it out
because if you're dealing with wet areas, you can't remediate
the mold until you dry it because you just smear it.
So that happens in cross spaces that I've seen. I've
(11:47):
seen different areas where people will go in there and
it's extremely wet from water intrusion, and they try to
remove the mold and you just smear it and it's
not going to come off because it's so wet, So
you've got to dry it out first. Then you can
remediate the mole.
Speaker 1 (12:05):
And remediating said mold has done how well.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
There's several ways that you can do that. You can
use dry ice blasting, you can use soda blasting. We've
always used once it's dry, we've always used a helpa
back because it'll remove it and get the roots of
the mole, which is called haifi out of the porch.
See wood is porous and the mole roots are in
(12:30):
the porch wood which is called haifi. So once we
remediate it correctly, it'll be gone. Then we can actually
fogg an area with an anti microbial that has ten
percent hydrogen peroxide and that'll kill mole on contact.
Speaker 1 (12:46):
And while we're talking about this, I'm just I'm thinking
back to you're back in twenty fifteen and the historic
floods we had.
Speaker 2 (12:55):
Oh yeah, that was a thousand year rain.
Speaker 1 (12:57):
Right, And going over my wife and I and friend
of hers to help do some cleanup over off Rosewood
Drive back of that area, and just looking at these
homes where the water level had crept up to the
apex of some of these houses. Oh yeah, and I'm
just for some reason why we're talking about this, I'm
(13:17):
remembering that and the Yeah, you wonder why something a
home is still standing after somebody that can can really
almost be a total loss because once you get that
much water.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
And true, there was a lot of that Geary the
Divine Street in Fort Jackson Boulevard where it flood the
dam's broke and it flooded that area, and I think
there was a couple of people that lost their lives
in that flood. So that water intrusion can be devastating,
and there is a remediation protocol. The first thing you
have to do is you've got to get in there
and tear out everything that's saturated.
Speaker 1 (13:51):
Pretty much all the sheet rocks got to come out, right, Yeah,
all that sheet wrong? What about the joys? What about
the studs?
Speaker 2 (13:56):
Well, the studs can be remediated, you just got to
You've got to get everything out first, and then you
can do a protocol of drying and I'm a certified
technician drying technician, and we use dehumanifiers and air movies
and you can drive that out and once it's dried,
then if there are any visible mold on vertical two
by four as you can remediate that.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
So that's the extreme, of course, and maybe your situation,
well your said is not extreme, but it doesn't take
a lot right. I think a lot of this intrusion
well to that problems.
Speaker 2 (14:29):
A lot of that we saw in twenty fifteen was
devastating water intrusion. You're not going to have that average
commercial business or home. So a lot of times it's
a relative humidity or it could be a small plumbing league.
But you have to identify what's going on.
Speaker 1 (14:44):
So once once all that's taken care of the remediations,
it's been identified, source has been been fixed, it's been
dried out, it's been uh, you come in and extract
that that that that that that mold from the surfaces.
I guess at that point it's never about idea to
go hit to the over to the pure air systems
(15:06):
to try absolutely.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
But in addition to that gear we do a lot
of fogging with a cold air mister and our product
that has Simpson hydroen proctide, and we have several collages
that have hired us to come in and fog dorm
rooms because they have high microbial or bacteria mold spores,
airborne and dorm rooms, other things. With the protocol of
(15:30):
using this product to fog the area, the hydrogen proctide
will kill bacterial mold on contact, and so it's very
effective to eradicate any airborne particles or or bacteria, microbials
of molds.
Speaker 1 (15:45):
Okay, So the systems, the pure air systems you have,
they're not filters, that's correct.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
It is a filterless technology that duplicates what the sunlight
does and what lightning does. Lightning actually creates six negative
ions per cubic centimeter four thousand positive. So if we
can put negative and positive charges in the air, we
make all the microscopic particles that are three microns are smaller,
they're non settling, and at night, if you came into
(16:14):
your home and shined a halogen light across the room,
it looked like a dust storm. So that's that microscopic
particles that are floating in there, and so we can
get all those out of the air continually. Then we
have an ultraviolet light that produces a plasma of hydrogen peroxide,
and hydrogen peroxide has been certified to sterilize surfaces like
(16:36):
a countertop, a table. So in addition to that, we
have a small amount of ozone. There's less than point
zero four parts from me in a ozone. And I
ask a client here not long ago why the sky
was blue, and they didn't know. And so the reason
the sky is blue because that is the color of ozone.
(16:57):
If we removed all the ozone out of the stratosphere,
every human on earth would be dead in a matter
of hours because of the radiation.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
Don't give me many bright ideas or literal Larry. So,
even if you don't have any equal issues at all,
this system here, what we're talking about, these these pure
air systems can can work wonders for your your health,
in your home and your business. Larry, we're out of time,
my friend. For folks who want to get a hold
of you for mold inspection, remediation, or just to grab
one of the puer air systems, give us that number
(17:24):
once again.
Speaker 2 (17:24):
It's a three six two six two seven four eight

Speaker 1 (17:35):
There it is Larry, good to see it.

Hey, welcome back in to the Health and Wellness Show
on What three point five FM and five sixty amwvoc
Well here we are on September the twenty seventh, and
we're going to spend some time talking about one of
my favorite things to do. All Oh is this guy
right here will tell you it's been a weird summer
for us. We just haven't had the chance to get
out on Lake Murray and enjoy it like we normally do.
(20:05):
And well it's not too late. Matt Lyons, proprietor Carefree
Boat Clubs at Lake Murray, is in the house.
Speaker 3 (20:14):
Good morning, sir.
Speaker 1 (20:15):
I don't worry you, man.
Speaker 3 (20:16):
I'm doing really, really well. No complaints on this. And
the nice thing is as we start fall, the weather's
been pretty good. Summer was a little goofy here and
there a certain times and so forth, but fall last
week for fall's been wonderful.
Speaker 1 (20:32):
And you know, I'm going to guess that, well, it
depends on who you are. If you own a boat,
with everything else going on, because it's a busy time
of the year it is, you're probably finding yourself not
getting out on a lake as much as you'd like to. Now,
if you're a member of a boat club like the
(20:52):
Carefree Boat Club at Lake Murray, like my wife and
I are, then it's just been on us that we
haven't gotten out there because the opportunities have abounded.
Speaker 3 (21:01):
Well, I try to look at the bright side of everything,
and SEC football in South Carolina has given us more
time to spend on a boat.
Speaker 1 (21:11):
Right, you knows. Fans are like, okay, what's the.
Speaker 3 (21:16):
Point, right, Yeah, the point is start boating. Unfortunately, I'd
love it to be different. But I actually figured out
how to mount a TV on the boat so that
I could on on any of our try tunes, watch
whatever football I want to watch. And it's something pretty cool.
We're going to try to produce more than just one
(21:37):
of them and have them for our members. Yep, we
were figuring out the system and so forth. The problem
is is we get better and better at that the
Chiefs get worse than So maybe it's all my fault.
Speaker 1 (21:48):
I'm not too sure.
Speaker 3 (21:49):
I'm not too sure. If so, I'm super sorry.
Speaker 1 (21:52):
It's on you, man. I thought it was on me
because I mean, for the Vanderbilt game. I'm a game
Cock fan. I mean for the Vanderbilt game. We were
all on the road, we were out of town, and
I didn't have my usual you know, my usual lucky
shirt on neither today and she has her lucky shirt too,
and and then you know, we weren't at home. So
when we're at home and we turned on the big screen,
we got it backlit back there. You know, I changed
(22:14):
the color from white to as clothes as I can
get to garn and it's really more of a red.
And well they got hammered. And then I thought, okay,
this past weekend, all right, we're at home, we got
a lucky shirts on, got the right color in the
back drop of the TV. And still so it's not me, okay,
and it's probably not you either.
Speaker 3 (22:32):
I hope it's not. And I don't want to be
responsible for that, but it's it's something because it hasn't
been It hasn't been great. No, it's not been Maybe
maybe today will be different.
Speaker 1 (22:41):
Maybe today as the game Cocks have have Kentucky they.
Speaker 3 (22:45):
Do, they do, and for those who don't know, my
daughter goes to Kentucky. So this is the one game
I was okay that they lost. That they lose, they
should say, but we'll see how it all plays out.
Speaker 1 (22:55):
We will our best game CT coverage on this afternoon.
By the way, three hours before, actually I think a
little more than three, I was okay, we're at four
to thirty day. I think it is right, Yeah, I
think it's anyway, So let's talk a little bit about boating,
because I mean, this really is and it's certainly it's
been well it's now officially fall, but we have, you know,
recently had to summer like temperatures, so that's not an excuse.
Speaker 3 (23:17):
It's been kind of awesome. So but no complaints.
Speaker 1 (23:22):
It's the best of both worlds right now. You've got
summer like temperatures, but you've got not a summer like
amount of people on the lake.
Speaker 3 (23:30):
The lake is not super busy. We have tons of
boats available. I laugh every time a member calls and says,
you have a boat available, and I am like, yeah,
you've just picked the location, and you picked the type
of boat. I can guarantee you we got it. Because
it's certainly. Our team's trying to keep busy as we
do a lot of boat maintenance, we do a lot
of boat cleaning. We're trying to sell off the fleet
(23:54):
so that we can replace it with brand new for
the upcoming twenty twenty sixth season. We're doing some great
promotions as it goes to reasons to join and so forth,
and we're about ready to roll out a really awesome promotion,
a price point we've never done before. Yep, yep. Because
we're we're really with the fourth location at Chile's Landing,
(24:18):
We're confident that we're going to be able to offer
this coming season really unmatched boat club experience, with the
variety of boats, the amount of boats, the amount of locations,
all the value adds we're going to do. It's first
time ever. I'm kind of just saying, if you want
to be on the lake, it's really foolish that you're
(24:39):
not a member of Carefree Boat Club.
Speaker 1 (24:41):
Well, and again, we were talking about football earlier, and
so if you're a Clemson van, you got to buy
a week this week, so you got time to haul
your boat out there and put in the water. You're
not going to miss out or anything. But if you're
a Carolina fan and you want to either go to
the game tonight or watch the game tonight, well there's
a bit of an issue there and that you we
don't really have time to hold that boat out there,
(25:02):
put it in the water. You could spend five minutes
and then bring it back out again, take it back
home and go, you know, get the traffic to get
to Williams. Brice Stadium. Okay, however, me, for example, I'm
not going to the game to an item, I guess
I'm gonna watch it. I'm planning to, but uh, you know,
and I you know, I could ask you right now, Hey, hey, Matt,
(25:23):
you got anything available for today? We do?
Speaker 3 (25:25):
We say yes on yeah, right, what kind of boat
in one location?
Speaker 1 (25:29):
What time you want to go, and we can pop
out there and you'll spend three four five hours on
the lake. I could roll back into the dock at
care Free at you know, at five five thirty six
o'clock this afternoon and still be in time at home,
in time to watch a game.
Speaker 3 (25:44):
Yes, or you can stop at any one of the
many restaurants on the lake and watch the game there.
Speaker 1 (25:48):
But see there yet that too.
Speaker 3 (25:49):
Yeah, we got kind of everything going on. Everything going on, right,
It's actually again, if you enjoy being on the water,
it's it's an awesome time a year to do that. So, yeah,
things are going great on the water.
Speaker 1 (26:02):
So that's the convenience factor. Yeah, pop in, pop out
of a lake, pop back in Tosha.
Speaker 3 (26:10):
The keys and walk away and walk away right, absolutely, And.
Speaker 1 (26:14):
If you've ever owned a boat, you know you can't
do it like that. No, that's the convenience factor.
Speaker 3 (26:19):
And the good news is most of the members have
owned a boat and they joined because they know they
can't do that. I started right the boat club because
I knew I was the world's worst boat owner and
I hate cleaning. Documented it has been and it's actually
in it. It's it's on file with the government and
so forth. For sure. For sure, everyone knows.
Speaker 1 (26:39):
The other part about the convenience that you alluded to
this earlier. You're opening a fourth location. We are.
Speaker 3 (26:43):
We're now going to be super close to Columbia, super
close to Lexington, right there at Shei Le's Landing. We
are keeping the name Sheiley's Landing. We still have boat
slips available there, dry storage available there, and we will
have a care free boat club location operating from there.
I tell everyone by March first, it'll be well before that.
(27:03):
It could be two weeks from now, quite honestly, where
it's just a matter of making sure we have enough
slips to put enough boats to make sense of it.
But well, no doubt we'll be there by by March first.
We'll probably be there well before then.
Speaker 1 (27:18):
So I'm looking at this map of Lake Murray and
we're on radio, so it doesn't translate, I know. But
south side of the lake, you've got two locations. Yep.
Speaker 3 (27:27):
We've got Lakeside just past south Shore Marina, right next
to the Lakeside Restaurant. We've got Charle's Fisherman's Fisherman, yeah,
right there. This year we had six boats there. We
hope for next year to increase that, probably do about
eight boats. And then Lake Murray Resort, the former Spinners
(27:47):
on the south side of the lake, not too far
from from Lakeside actually, but a little bit off three
seventy eight. That location. This year we had maybe up
to twenty boats, eighteen boats something like that.
Speaker 1 (27:59):
That's a beautiful spot.
Speaker 3 (28:00):
It is a great spot, and there's two really good
places to grab a bight there. Plus we've got the
private beach Club there for care free members and so forth.
And then on the north side at the former freid
Not which is now Fat Frogs Marina's.
Speaker 1 (28:14):
Well the northwest side of the northwest.
Speaker 3 (28:16):
Side yep, yep. It is a real close to Dure Island.
We do we do daily boat rentals out of there,
and we also have the care Free Club out of
there and the care Free Club there. I think this
year had about eight nine boats and.
Speaker 1 (28:27):
You got each there too, right, we do.
Speaker 3 (28:29):
Yeah, there's Doolittle's watering Hole there, which is a great spot.
They she actually does Italian sausage and she does, Yeah,
then they do. Their fries are super good. I'm a
big fan of that place for sure. It's a great
place to grab a bite on the water.
Speaker 1 (28:43):
So then let's call it the north east side will
be the new one.
Speaker 3 (28:46):
Yep, northeast will be the new one. At that point,
we're kind of at all four corners. I don't think
we can find a place more on the southeast side
of the lake. Unfortunately, there's a lot of private residences
over there and so forth. There's not really a marine
and I can go to, and I'm I'm done with
putting locations on Lake Murray at that point. Four locations
(29:07):
is two more than any of my competitors, three more
than most of my competitors were well covering the lake.
We've got a ton of boats and I for the
first time, we're going to put a clear goal on
how many members we want to get to, and then
we want to shut it down. So we want to
maintain our low member to boat ratio, so I can
(29:30):
buy boats, I can sell boats, I can add boats.
We've got a lot of big things in the plans
for twenty twenty six. The plan will be basically to
double the membership in twenty twenty six and when we
do shut it down, right.
Speaker 1 (29:44):
So, so and you got to figure out what that is?
How many boats to buy?
Speaker 3 (29:47):
Yep?
Speaker 1 (29:47):
Yeah, absolutely, absolutely, Yeah, that's important. You don't you don't
want to get to the point where I think you've
told us before. I mean, Carefree Boat Clubs is a
national chain. You're you're a local franchise here on Lake
mur But they have restrictions as to how many members
per bote you can have, but you have always been
way under that. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (30:06):
They allow us to go as high as ten members
per bote and we've never gone beyond five members per
bote at any time of the year, regardless of what
our membership level was. And we make that information available
to current members and potential members on a daily basis,
so any day you can look into the system and
(30:26):
see where it sits that day. Most of this summer
it sat between four point two and four point seven
members per vote, and it's live where if we down
a vote for repairs, it takes out of the member
to bout ratio, so it changes the ratio. If we
at a member, it changes the ratio. So it's literally live.
Every time we add a vote at a member, take
(30:49):
out aboute whatever.
Speaker 1 (30:50):
The total transparency right there.
Speaker 3 (30:52):
It really is, and that's there's a lot of things
because people when they think about joining a boat club,
they wonder is this legit? Am I really going to
be able to get a boat when I want it?
Am I really going to be able to get a
nice boat? Is there going to be any availability? That's
the whole fear of does a boat club make sense
if you want to be on the water. It's super
easy to show that it's less expensive, with more options
(31:16):
and way more convenience. So there's no negative side to
joining a boat club other than the fact that will
they have a boat when I want it? And the
only answer to that is the member to boat race show.
And you got to prove it because anyone can say
what they want to say. People out there can say
I'm Walt Disney's grandson and I've got three hundred boats
that you can't see right here, and you can use
(31:38):
my private jet and all the other fun stuff. And
you know, people can claim whatever they want. But at
the end of the day, especially not with AI and
all that stuff. At the end of the day, all
you've got to do is go into our resonant system
and look at our member to boat ratio. It's live,
it's current.
Speaker 1 (31:55):
It's real interesting backstory here too, because chances are that
care free boat clubs at likeke Murray wouldn't even exist
had when you moved to this area a couple of
years ago and look to join a boat club if
you hadn't been told, well, we can't really divulge our
boat to member ratio. Not naming names here, but that
(32:17):
that really happened, right.
Speaker 3 (32:19):
That is a true story. I walked into the only
boat club on the lake at the time, check book
in my pocket, and said I want to join, and
they wouldn't let me join just by walking in. They
made me make up an appointment and come back and
go through a tour. And as a sales guy of
thirty years, I'm like, you don't want my money, like
it's green, it's real, And so I went back and
(32:41):
went through the tour. The boats were good, the location
was really convenient to my house, like there was a
lot of things to check the box. And I was
still ready to join, and I just needed to know
the member the boat ratio, and they wouldn't tell me.
And then three phone calls from them over the next
two weeks trying to get me to join, with better yields,
better programs, better everything, they still would never give me
(33:03):
the member to.
Speaker 1 (33:04):
Bout ratio, big red flash.
Speaker 3 (33:06):
And I'm like, yeah, if you're not telling me something,
there's a reason you're not telling me something, let alone
proving what you're telling me. Like they kudos to them.
They didn't lie to me and say it was one
to one. They could have at that point, but I
was ready to join. If they would have said twenty
to one, I would have said okay and joined. Because
I didn't want to start a business. I didn't. I mean,
(33:26):
this is a labor alone, this is actually work. I
know it's fun. I get to be on the boats,
blah blah blah ah, that fun stuff, but at the
end of the day, I didn't. I don't want to
work that hard, right, I don't want to carry tubes
on a Saturday morning, you know, to a boat that
someone else is going to go enjoy. I do it
because it's fun, and I do it because for me
and my family, it was the best way to get
(33:48):
out on the water. My options were own a boat,
join a club that wouldn't tell me their memory about ratio,
and so my thought was, I'll probably never get a
boat or buy a boat, which we could have afforded
to do. But I knew right away that boat's going
to be broke more than it's going to be working
because I'm not going to take care of it. I'm
not going to know what a ten hour service is,
(34:08):
what one hundred hour services. I'm gonna be too lazy
to clean it when I want to clean it. My
kids aren't going to clean it all the stuff that
goes with that. My wife's going to be angry because
every time we go out on it, it doesn't work
right because I haven't kept enough.
Speaker 1 (34:20):
I'm having flashbacks here many havack exactly.
Speaker 3 (34:24):
So yeah, it My life would have been substantially easier
if they would have just said, our remembered boat ratio
is fourteen to one. I would have said, great, here's
my money. I'm in the club, and then I might
have had a great experience, might have a horwit who
knows you don't know anything to you know. But at
the end of the day that that option wasn't available
to me, and so I went this option. And we
(34:47):
love it. My kids work there, my wife chips in
a little bit here and there. We've got a really
good crew. Every year we've got a great crew that's
come on board. So it seems to be a fun
summer job for a lot of high schoo when college kids.
They make good. They make good money on tips. We
also pay a fair hourly salary. And now we've got
multiple locations, multiple business lines going on, really exploding in business.
(35:12):
I never wanted to start.
Speaker 1 (35:15):
You know, I'll be honest. I mean back when we
own boats, Yeah, we thought more than once about joining
a boat club, and quite honestly, I never even jumped
into it as deeply as you did. I just thought, yeah, no,
I'm not going there because the minute we want one,
there's not gonna be one available, and it's I'm gonna
be paying money for nothing, yep. And the chicks won't
(35:37):
be free.
Speaker 7 (35:39):
We never are they are, so it never progressed past
until you open care Free boat Club about three years ago,
and and we started talking and and you showed us, well,
you know.
Speaker 1 (35:51):
What, this is not the way we do business over here.
So kudos to you for that.
Speaker 3 (35:54):
And it is really a it's a tough industry for
people to understand because as you you sit there and
everyone's very skeptical. And the first thing is you're not
going to keep up your boats. Nothing's going to be
available and I want it, and you know, we're going
to be super upset and super disappointed. And it's a
it's a work. It's a lot of work to get
it to the point where no, our focus is the
(36:16):
customer experience first and foremost. We're going to get a
bigger variety of boats. We're going to have more locations,
we're going to have less members per boat. We're going
to do all the things opposite of what everyone thinks
the downfall of a boat club will be. And if
we do that over time, we'll win the game, at
least the theory. I'll let you know.
Speaker 1 (36:36):
You're not trying to win it yet.
Speaker 3 (36:37):
No, No, we have not won the game yet. We
are we are still probably on about the forty yard line.
We got a long way to go. Yeah, but that's okay,
because we'll we'll we'll win the game eventually, and then
we'll just start a new game with the whatever we.
Speaker 1 (36:53):
Got to move keeps back again, right, exactly, exactly, all right,
So maybe next time we get together, you'll be ready
to roll out the new ricing structure for the offseason.
Speaker 3 (37:01):
Absolutely, okay, yeah, absolutely, it's we We are gonna it'll
hit social media. Was gonna be a November special, we'll
hit it well before then, okay, And it'll be the
first time ever we've offered this deal, this pricing, this program,
and it gets around the very the hardest thing about joining,
which is basically the initiation fee. Right, every club has
(37:21):
an initiation fee and a monthly fee. Monthly fees are
always really close. But yeah, next next time we get together,
which I believe is two weeks, two weeks, we do
this every two weeks, we will announce our our I'm
gonna I guess I'll call it the Fall Special. That
we've never done this aggressively before, and it's gonna be
a game changer.
Speaker 1 (37:42):
Well, be here for that in two weeks on this
very radio program. Mad Lions Care, every Boat Clubs, Lake Murray.
In the meantime, people want to get more info or
go ahead, get signed up right now, what do they do?
Speaker 3 (37:52):
Yep? They can reach out to us at carefreeboats dot
com or they can give us a call at eight
three three four Boat four to four. And if you
do reach out to us and you sign up in
want information, we are offering our November special to people
that reach out to us beforehand as well. So yeah,
we're just not making it known marketing it for another
(38:14):
two weeks. But you're gonna because I'm not going to
sign someone up and you know, for ten dollars in
next week, we're five dollars like that. That's really a
bad thing. So yeah, we're gonna.
Speaker 1 (38:23):
One of those phone plan things where yeah, we'll give
you the phone. Oh no, you're a current customer. Sorry, no,
you can't get it exactly exactly, Mad Lions Care, every
book clubs like Mary, We'll see other Lady brother, Thank you, sir.

Speaker 1 (40:36):
Let's let's talk about your money, let's talk about peace
of mind. It's John Farley, Matthew Terry Preservation Specialists. We're
into the let's see, I guess fourth quarter is not
until October, you know on the calendar, but we're approaching
that time, and if you haven't already started to think
about it, it's time to start thinking about trying to
(40:56):
produce that tax pill as much as you can for
twenty twenty five. Yeah, and a lot of ways to
do that. And this is one of the things you
guys specialize in a preservation specialists, right, is effective tax planning.
Speaker 8 (41:09):
Yeah, it's absolutely staple in our opinion to everyone's retirement
plan the current situation. You know, I've never met anyone
who says, Matthew, I just love paying taxes, Can you
help me pay more?
Speaker 2 (41:22):
Right?
Speaker 3 (41:22):
I mean, I think we can all agree if.
Speaker 8 (41:24):
We have the option to, we'd love to pay a
little bit less.
Speaker 3 (41:27):
Well, we'd love to pay nothing, but obviously we can't.
Speaker 8 (41:30):
We can't continue on as an economy and nation if
we did that. But regardless, what we always want to
do for clients is you're you're exactly right.
Speaker 1 (41:38):
Gary.
Speaker 8 (41:39):
As we are approaching the fourth quarter of the year
and the final turn, we encourage you to sit down
talk with your advisor or either tax professional to just
evaluate your current situation to see if there's anything that
you should be taking advantage of. So you know, as
we're coming up on the year end, that can be
things such as making contribute into retirement accounts. That could
(42:02):
be making contributions into your retirement plans, that could be
making contributions into a health savings account if you have
a high deductible health care plan. There's a number of
different planning opportunities that you can take advantage of. But
I would say one big way that we are very
much going to differ and even maybe go against what
(42:22):
your typical CPA would recommend to you. Is we believe
in looking at taxes not just for twenty twenty five,
but over the course of your lifetime. How can we
not only save you taxes this year, but we more
importantly care about how can we save you from paying
taxes over the course of over the coming years and
over the remainder of your life. So for us, what
(42:45):
that really means is is that we all know on
July fourth, earlier this year, the passing of the One
Big Beautiful Bill, it extended our current previous tax code,
meaning the tax brackets that we've had. And what that
really allows is it gives us all more time and
more opportunities to plan and to consider whether or not
(43:09):
we want to intentionally pay taxes today, To go ahead,
move that money to a wroth account, to give a
number of years of growth and dividends and all that
that you will receive from that point on, that's all
tax free. That's yours to keep. We think about we're
all encouraged typically to put money into a traditional four
(43:30):
one K, but if you really stop to think, what
you're doing is you receive a deduction whenever you put
money in. That's good, right, I mean it, Yeah, we're
okay with that. But think about all those years of
growth that you are receiving on that money that you invested.
If I also say, would you rather pay taxes on
all that growth in the future, or would you rather
(43:52):
pay taxes on the money that goes in and then
all the growth after that point is tax free? Right, Well,
not out of ten people are going to say to you,
I want to choose the latter option. I want to
choose the option this is, let's pay taxes today. I
want to say, whatever growth we receive after that part,
that's mine to keep. You don't have any io us
attached to Uncle Sam.
Speaker 1 (44:13):
Yeah on that part. And until just recently it was
an employer sponsor playing. You didn't have that option, but
now you do. Yeah most of the time. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (44:21):
And if you're and if your employer still doesn't offer that, uh,
it's uh, it's if enough people ask for it, most
employers will change that.
Speaker 1 (44:29):
It's not that expensive.
Speaker 5 (44:30):
I mean, my customer thousand dollars deree writes to you know,
to have the the documents for your four one k
rewritten to accommodate a roth. But you know, it's not
it I say a thousand. I don't know what the
number is, but it's not a lot. You can you
can have that set up. So yeah, and that is
definitely the way to go, because think of it this
way again. A couple of weeks ago and Slot was
in town. We had him come and speak with uh
with our with our clients, and you know, he's he's
(44:52):
in his seventies, and he talked about, you know, the
baby boomer generation and what were the tax rates and everything,
and and he made this really important point and he said,
you know, you ask people our tax rates high, and
the first answer is yes, they're really high. They're really high.
And he says, I'm just going to remind you of something.
Baby boomers stopped in nineteen sixty four. From nineteen sixty
(45:14):
three to nineteen sixty four, the highest tax rate lowered
from ninety percent to seventy seven percent.
Speaker 2 (45:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (45:24):
Right, And he says, it's like UK kind of taxes. Yeah,
it's out of the you know. And he said, let's
just remember right now, taxes are effectively on sale. Our
highest tax rate now is less than half of what
the highest tax rate was, you know, at the end
of the Baby boomers, right, And if you do the
math on this, he said, look at you know, even
if you're you know, twelve, twenty two to twenty four,
(45:45):
these are cheap taxes relative to probably what they're going
to be in the future, simply because the debt continues
to grow. And how do you manage that? And there's
a four letter word math that that accounts for that.
I mean, there's no way around it. Well, okay, there
maybe there is.
Speaker 3 (45:59):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (46:00):
You keep kicking the can down the road.
Speaker 1 (46:01):
What does that mean? I don't you know.
Speaker 4 (46:02):
You listen to people like Ray Dallyio and he has
a lot to say about.
Speaker 1 (46:05):
This sort of thing.
Speaker 5 (46:07):
The point is is that, you know, we don't know
exactly what the future holds, but what we do know
is that taxes are cheap right now relative to historical standards.
So it's a good time to take advantage of things
and do some planning. And there are plenty of articles
that will make the point that tax planning can be
(46:29):
more important than the returns on your investments in terms
of how that affects your portfolio twenty years down the road.
How does that affect how much money you have in
your pocket if you do this thing right? That that
is a huge part of the plan. So yeah, So
we definitely work with folks and try to get things
as tax efficient as possible in everything that we do.
(46:50):
And there are definitely strategies that you can say, okay,
let's get you here, and so you know, one of
them is we talk about the rock conversion.
Speaker 1 (46:56):
That's one.
Speaker 5 (46:56):
Another one though, is is is permanent life insurance that
has cash value?
Speaker 1 (47:01):
Uh?
Speaker 5 (47:01):
And again I don't want to get into all the
weeds on that, but the idea universal type of life, yeah,
or there there are that's that's a good one. That's
you know, there are different that's one example. Yes, But
the idea is is if you accumulate cash value in
a life insurance account and you start it early enough,
even if you don't start it that early, I mean,
you know, then what happens is you can borrow that
cash and use it yourself later on. And as long
(47:24):
as that cash value never goes to zero, you don't
know a dime on that. So that's basically tax free
income for you and most people in retirement. And we've
done this a lot with folks where we say, okay, uh,
you've got your money in certain investments, in stocks, you've
got it in different things. You know, let's diversify you
into a lot of different areas. One of them would
be this, and this gives you a lot of levers
you can pull because in addition to being able to
(47:45):
use the cash, that's one when you get into retirement,
a lot of policies now allow you to take the
death benefit and use it for long term care, because
that is one thing that you know, so there's a
there's a lot of there's a lot of option. We
have a lot of options for you, and and that's
that's good, you know, really diversified. Not just okay, I'm
(48:07):
diversified in stocks because I have energy stocks and industrials
and you know, banking, but diversified in everything that's available
for you.
Speaker 1 (48:16):
So, Matthew, how do you when somebody comes in and
sits down with you? Guys, Again, as John just alluded to,
our focus has always been on our return on our investment.
And so so suddenly now you're telling somebody, okay, let's
not yeah, that's important, but but you know, over the
long tal, long haul, you know, it may well be
better to be focusing on reducing these taxes in later years,
(48:39):
and people go, well, I won't return. Yeah, I mean
that's got to be a hard sell in certain instances.
Speaker 8 (48:47):
You're exactly right, Gary. You know, for us, as comprehensive planners,
we want to make sure that we're creating a plan
that they communicates and fits all together. But the reality
is most of us we our sole focus is on investments.
But really what a good portion of our focus should
also be on should be on our tax diversification. And
what I mean by tax diversification is of the money
(49:09):
that you've saved for retirement, how's it going to be taxed?
Speaker 1 (49:12):
Right?
Speaker 8 (49:12):
Money that is in your four to one k traditional
four to one K plan, that's forever taxed. Any withdraws
that you pull out, you don't know. Whenever you make
a contribution in you don't know what your tax rate
is going to be in the future whenever you retire. Sure,
but if you put it into a Wroth account, well
you know what today's tax rates are. Uncertainty, Absolutely, you
(49:33):
have certainty. There's no question mark there to say, Matthew,
I know for a fact I'm signing up to pay
taxes at twenty two percent or twenty four percent, as.
Speaker 3 (49:41):
John alluded to before. Tax rates are historically low.
Speaker 8 (49:45):
Well, I know we don't enjoy paying those, but the
reality is, how do you have certainty, how do you
have confidence? And how do you have peace of mind? Well,
you truly have peace of mind if you have money
in that never tax bucket such as a Wroth ira.
They can double time rates. It doesn't matter for money
that is within that Wroth account.
Speaker 1 (50:03):
Yeah, it occurs to me because we had this discussion
a month or two back about you know, he's talking
social security and solvency and you know, the trust fund
going belly up and this and that, and then yeah,
I think what was the Uh, there were predictions that
you know, whatever your benefit is now, it could be
reduced by twenty five percent or something like that, you
know in the next couple of years. Spots. You hear
(50:24):
that and you're like, no, but this is kind of
the same thing here. You don't know, you could retire
today and be paying a certain tax rate. When you
would draw that money from most traditional funds, it could
be a whole lot worse than that, five, ten, fifteen
years down the road. From now when you're still trying
to withdraw all that money and now you're getting twenty
five percent or more than that less.
Speaker 4 (50:47):
Yes, you're absolutely right.
Speaker 8 (50:48):
And it's one of those things that if you have
money in that traditional four one K or traditional IRA,
I mean uncle Sam is our silent partner. I mean
he has the liberty to come in and say, Matthew,
I know last year I got twenty four percent on
the money that you took out, but this year I
want twenty eight or I want thirty two percent. The
reality is that's what Congress has the power to do.
(51:11):
Whenever they ride into effect a new tax code, they
define the tax brackets and we have no option but
to pay that.
Speaker 1 (51:19):
Okay.
Speaker 8 (51:19):
So that's the thing doing tax planning today. It allows
you to have certainty, It allows you to have peace
of mind, and it allows you to sleep well at
night knowing that regardless what's to happen in the future
for tax rates, you're going to be set. You have
a plan for it, and you feel confident about it.
Speaker 1 (51:34):
And it's just different for everybody, right, I guess, depending
on well.
Speaker 5 (51:38):
Yeah, there's no one size fits all. There are some
general rules of thumb which is never tax is better
than always tax, right, I mean, you know there's certain
things that you know, so yeah, but there is no
one size fits all. And then it'll you know, it
also depends on how do you feel, you know, as
certain people say, well, I want to leave a certain
(51:58):
amount of money to my air and you know, my
kids and this sort of thing. And one of the
things again we keep referencing ed slut, but he's he's
a funny guy, but he was. He gets up there
and he has this New York accent, you know, he's
very new. He's like, it's about you. It's not about
your kids, okay, it's about you, you know. And so
he's saying, they have plenty of money. And by the way,
(52:19):
you are the ones that are kind of figure out.
Speaker 1 (52:20):
How to spend it. Not them.
Speaker 5 (52:21):
They already know how to spend it. Believe me, they do,
you know. So he's just going on and on. But
but that's really the thing, and and it's it's you know.
Then then it goes to this analogy that's used all
the time. You know, you're on an aircraft and uh,
and they say, hey, if the oxygen masks deploy, put
it on yourself. First, and then of course, you know,
and then then and so he's like, and that's how
(52:41):
it is in the financial world. Of course, he added
the joke, and he said, and then you you put
it on the kids that your your favorite kid first.
Speaker 4 (52:48):
And then your next favorite kids next.
Speaker 2 (52:49):
You know.
Speaker 1 (52:50):
All right, we've got to wrap it up there, preservation specialists.
It's all about peace of mind.
Speaker 8 (52:54):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, Please give us a call. We'll be
happy to sit down talk review your tax situation at
eight oh three nine retire. That's ato three nine retire.
Speaker 1 (53:04):
Y'all have a great weekend.
Speaker 3 (53:06):
The two Garretts, Thank you, Susan.
