(00:01):
On this week's episode. We're inthe middle of a writers strike, but
how about an actor strike on topof that? Along running Boston Film Festival
is returning non spoiler review of Guardiansof the Galaxy three and movies we're looking
forward to. This is the Hubon Hollywood. I'm James, I'm Jamie.
Let's get to it all right,Welcome back to another episode. This
(00:23):
is a jam packed one. Wewill get to everything, including the writer's
strike and why Ryan reynolds mouth isgoing to be taped shuts basically during the
filming of Deadpool three. But thetwenty fifth Roxbury International Film Festival that takes
place in Boston every year is returning. The festival dates have been released.
It's gonna be spanning through June twentyeighth through July second of this year,
(00:47):
and they have two movies or projectsthat are like the showcase the Headliners.
One is titled Welcoming the Embrace, which is basically the background story of the
Embrace statue on the Common, andalso The Honeymoon, which is about a
South African film about a bride wholeft who was left at the altar,
(01:10):
but decides to take her honeymoon withher friends in Zanzibar. Back to the
welcoming of the Embrace, Jamie, have you seen that that the mL came
of correta Scott King Memorial or monumentrather, Yes, and we've seen it
on the common, you know,we've gone in person with with our kids
to go down and see it.But there's been so much controversy around the
(01:32):
statue itself and many people who don'tthink it's esthetically pleasing and that from certain
angles it looks almost a little bitludum so, which is yes, which
is a little disappointing that there's thatthat kind of a controversy around something that
is so meaningful. So I'm verymuch looking forward to what this kind of
(01:53):
a documentary has to say about itand all everything that went into sort of
making it. I assume you've seenit as well. Oh yeah, I
was there during I was actually therewhen they first installed like the first piece
of the structure and they had iton a crane and they had like,
oh one hundred feet in the airtaking it to its final destination. And
(02:13):
um, yeah, it was interestingbecause the initial reaction was, you know,
the city of Boston made this bigspectacle out of it. You know,
you know, obviously the history behindit is very meaningful, and you
know, people were taking pictures andtalking about how great it was. But
once the pictures started appearing online andeveryone outside of Boston started seeing it,
that's when the discussion took a turnand a lot of criticism came out,
(02:37):
especially for the designer of the ofthe structure. They were receiving a lot
of flack just because the people weresaying, you know, it doesn't really
look good from certain angles, itlooks kind of like certain body parts and
whatnot. But at the end ofthe day, and I was kind of
in that on that boat also, you know, in my gut, I
was like, you know what myinitial gut reaction, I was like,
this looks kind of this looks veryweird, and I not sure if it's
(03:00):
if it's like the best kind ofstructure to memorialize the Kings. But I
think it's grown on me since, and I think it's grown on a lot
of people and definitely led to alot of discussion, which art is supposed
to do, and so kind ofcome around to it. But I'm wondering
if Welcoming the Embrace will have thataspect that angle a part of it,
(03:22):
So that's that's gonna be interesting. The w We're going to have to go
to the Roxbury Film Festival. It'shybrid this year, with in person screenings
taking place in various locations. There'salso an online component to it, so
definitely be sure to check that out. And we love highlighting local artists,
local creators, local filmmakers. Ifyou have a part in Welcoming the Embrace,
(03:46):
or the Honeymoon or this film festival, we would love to hear from
you, and we will feature herehere on the Hub on Hollywood. Absolutely
and now talking about Hollywood, oneof Hollywood's best and most popular A List
stars right now is Ryan Reynolds. We know that despite the writers strike,
the movie, the next film inthe trilogy, Deadpool Trilogy, is still
(04:09):
in the works. However, RyanReynolds, he's found himself in quite the
tricky spot because the movies are knownfor a lot of ad libbing, for
a lot of improvisation. However, because Ryan Reynolds is a part of the
Writer's Guild of America, he can'tbe allowed to improvise anything because that will
(04:30):
count as a writer working during thestrike. Do you think this will hurt
or help the movie. I thoughtthe entire nearly the entirety of all of
these movies was improvised to begin with. So yeah, don't know how they're
going to pull it off. Ifhe can't just riff off the cuff with
his mouth, Like, how howis this going to work? So how
(04:54):
are they creating the movie? Arethey just going by a script that's already
written and there's no changes that areallowed to be made. I'm confused.
I think they I think that's therule where they must go by what's ever
written, like written down on paper. However, you know how you know
almost every business, you know,uh, they say things out loud publicly
(05:15):
like oh, we are not goingto break the rules of the strike.
We're not going to break the rules, or you know, we follow everything's
by the by the letter. Butyou know, behind the scenes there's always
shenanigans going going along. So Icould totally see maybe Ryan adlibbing and then
that night somebody takes the script andlike does a little edit and says,
(05:35):
oh, no, this was apre edit. This was we didn't touch
this, this this is how thescript always was. I don't know if
there's somebody there whose job it isto check the script to make sure that
lines are not changed. Maybe thereis, maybe there isn't, But I
can totally see people in the filmindustry, you know, outwardly saying we
support the strike, and maybe thenthey still do, but they understand like
(05:56):
the nature of the business and theyhave to make changes where they need to.
So I can only see that playingout. Also, well, there
is a script a script supervisor onevery set who is there to assist the
director and making sure that they areadhering to the script or you know,
letting the director know whether this istoo different or you know, when we
go off track or on track right. So there there is someone that that
(06:19):
is their jobs. Maybe he canlike twist some arms of those supervisors and
like, hey, how about youa donut or something, and you could
look the other way. I don'tknow. I don't know how that's going
to play out, so but yes, I can see how that might be
an issue, especially for this kindof a film where it's a lot of
(06:42):
riffing and improv in previous movies andit's just a lot of like in the
moment collaboration, and I don't knowhow they can police stopping that, but
hey, I'm not I'm not I'mnot no narc So however they end up
doing it, I just hope thatit is a good move and that because
we are very much looking forward tothis one. How many decades well maybe
(07:05):
that's a little saggeration. How manyyears have we been? Um has Deadpool
been making fun of Wolverine? HughJackman, Hugh Jackman and you know,
their their incredible friendship, and nowwe're finally going to see Hugh Jackman come
back into this this universe and bea part of the Deadpool movie and all
of that. So I just wantedto be good. I just wanted to
(07:28):
be good, which is what everybodywants, you know, And hey,
if you want good entertainment, youshould, I don't know, maybe pay
the writers. Yeah, well,so maybe this will all be a mood
point if the writer strike ends, but at this rate, at this point,
it doesn't look like the writers strikewill end. And at this rate,
also looking at the bigger picture,it seems like the WGA is not
(07:51):
the only organization that will be hittingthe pick a line. That's right.
So sag After right now has sentout a fly to all of its members.
Those are all of the actors fora strike authorization. They've sent out
UM a vote for a strike authorizationUM that would give them the leverage that
(08:16):
they need or that they say thatthey need UM for negotiations that are upcoming
U. The current contract ends atthe end of June, and so they
are going to be negotiating with theyou know, the big the big powerhouses,
(08:37):
you know, the the NBC's,the Disneys and Netflix is, you
know, all of them UM.And some of the big concerns are the
same as the writers, that actorsare being paid less, that streaming services
have made this sort of gray areawhere people are not getting they're not getting
their value out of it. They'renot they're not getting their money's worth for
(09:00):
what they're putting into it. Rightbecause streaming services and everything that's happening with
streaming has developed so quickly that peopleare not getting paid the way that they
feel that they deserve to. There'salso the issues of AI and everything else
involved with that. Especially you know, we've seen this before in the movie
I Want to Dance with Somebody thatwas filmed here in Boston in Massachusetts in
(09:26):
general, where they digitally scanned actorsand put them into the movie and they
could replicate them, right, Sowhat are the rules that go with that?
Where are the rules that go withHey, if I have to be
digitally scanned and put into a movie, you know, do I still get
residuals? Do I still get thisthat or the other thing? You know?
What are the rights for owning myimage and other things to do with
(09:52):
AI? So there's all of thesequestions, lots of advancements that need to
be you know, they all needto sit down negotiate over it. So
that's what's going to be happening rightnow. Those flyers have been sent out
so sag AFT members can vote whetheror not they want to authorize a strike.
Put that on the table as theyenter their negotiations, and all of
(10:13):
those little voting cards you need tovote by June fifth. By June fifth
is the deadline for voting to authorizethat strike. Okay, well we'll just
have to wait at the edge ofour seats and see what happens. But
talking about voting, a lot ofpeople will be voting at the movie theater
just next month on whether or notto see two movies that are going head
(10:35):
to head. That is Oppenheimer versusBarbie. So Jamie, who will win
in a fight, Barbie or anatomic bomb? Oh? Lord, listen,
they're both would I would say they'reboth going to bomb, but they're
not. They're both going to dogreat. Listen, listen, looks listening,
(10:56):
hands on what you like. Myhusband cannot wait to see Oppenheimer.
That's the only thing that he Iwant to see. I want to see
Barbie. I'm not you know,I don't need that drama in my life.
Like I know what happens spoiler alertautomic, but whatever, I you
(11:18):
know, I want something light andentertaining and funny and mindless. So it's
all about what you like. It'sall about what you like. You know.
There's no wrong answer here, No, And I think everybody can have
can have both? Why not both? Yeah? The movies are coming out
on July twenty first. Matt Damonhe is in Oppenheimer, and I guess
(11:39):
he learned about how both movies wouldbe going head to head. He knows
that his daughters are and wanting togo see Barbie. But he did say,
you know, people are allowed togo see two movies in one weekend.
Oppenheimer is one of them. Again. Matt Damon has four daughters,
so he presumes that they'll want tocheck out Barbie before Oppenheimer. But you
know, you could. I thinkyou're can appease everybody. So Jamie,
(12:01):
for your scenario, we could possiblyhave you and your husband see Oppenheimer opening
night and then the next night watchBarbie together. I think that's a good
compromise. How about how about this? How about you and Ron, you
and my husband go see Oppenheimer, and me and your wife we'll go see
Barbie. How about that. That'snot a bad idea. We'll just have
(12:24):
a double date, but separate doubledates, which is yeah, exactly,
we'll take turns watching the babies andkids and all that stuff. No,
that's great, So no, no, A lot of good movies are coming
out soon. We have We havenot only Oppenheimer, Barbie coming out soon,
the News Into the Spider or Acrossthe Spider Verses coming out, the
(12:45):
new Transformers US coming out, AsteroidCity, the Wes Anderson film starring like
every celebrity under the Sun is inthat movie. Also one other movie that
is coming out soon starring Brennan Fraserand leon To Dicafrio, directed by Martinus
Scorsese, is Killers of the FlowerMoon? Can you fond the wolves in
(13:11):
this picture? Now? Trailers aredropped all the time, and you know
some of them are very hit ormiss. This trailer for Killers of the
Flower Moon was a big hit forme. It has me very excited to
see this film. However, atthe moment, I think it's only coming
out on Apple TV. That maybethe biggest downside. I hope that there
(13:33):
is a dual release in theaters andon the streaming service, because this looks
like a really really good period piecefilm that is apparently based on a real
story, on a true story.Oh that is really excellent. So I
love Brendan Frasier that we're having thisBrenda Sons or yeah, yeah, the
Frasier Sons, however you want tosay it. And he's just a fabulous
(13:58):
character actor as we in The Whaleand all a lot of his things that
he's done lately. So um,definitely Killer Killers of the Flower Moon Apple
TV plus, Well, we'll we'llmake it work. Well, we'll see,
we'll see. Robert de Niro's alsoin it. Jesse Plemon's your favorite?
Uh, yeah, a lot,a lot of good people. So
yeah, this one, this oneI'm excited for. UM and another movie
(14:22):
I'm very excited for. It's alreadyout, but I have a new baby
and newborn at home, and soI've not been able to go to the
movie theaters at all. But Guardiansof the Galaxy Volume three of big hits,
and I understand it. You sawrecently too, We'll all fly away
together into the forever a beautiful sky. I did, and so I will
(14:50):
keep it non spoilery. But Idid also finally get to see Guardians of
the Galaxy three. Um. Also, you know, kids, you know,
make that a little bit more difficultto go and see it opening weekend,
But it was so it was heartfelt. I think that there were a
lot of stories, a lot ofcharacter arcs that were wrapped up nicely.
(15:16):
I think they wanted to take theirtime with that, and they did a
great job with it. At somepoints of the movie, it does feel
a little bit long, but it'sworth it. I felt like it was
worth it. I felt like itwas very sweet, it was very heartfelt.
It was very funny in the waythat only they can be funny.
The soundtrack again was pretty amazing.I only have like minor, minor,
(15:39):
minor critiques, and one of thethings that I was most pleased with,
and this is not a spoiler. You know, we know that Gomra died
previously and is somehow back, butthis version of Gomra doesn't really remember anything
about the Guardians. And how theyaddressed that between her and Quill, I
(16:02):
think they knock it out of thepark. I think it could have been
very easy to kind of make thatcheesy and two dimensional and meaningless, but
they really, really really did agreat job of handling that that relationship,
and I think surprisingly a lot ofGuardians of the Galaxy is all about mental
(16:25):
health and overcoming trauma and found familyand all of these things that are just
so wonderful and relatable and human. So that is all in there. I
like this better than Guardians of theGalaxy two, but I think Guardians of
the Galaxy one is still number onein my heart. But this is you
know, very very solid, entertaining, heartfelt and you should see it as
(16:48):
soon as you can. How doyou rank the main villain in this movie
compared to like sayt Fano soor Kangor Loki. This guy Okay, he
gave me the creeps way more thanThanos ever did. Like, they get
dark, they get a little unnecessarilydark in this last Guardians movie, especially
(17:14):
with the storyline of Rocket, becausethe high Evolutionary he is the person responsible
for creating Rocket, and that processby which Rocket was created and everything he
went through is just so painful anddesperate, and they do not pull any
(17:36):
punches in the way that they portraythat on film. And so seeing what
this guy is is capable of,and his instability, his mental instability,
and the intensity of his performance, like damn, Like they did a really
good job. I could barely watchsome parts of that. I was like,
(17:57):
wow, you know, this issupposed to be a fun movie.
This sh is scaring me, Likethis is scary. So I think that
he makes a very good villain.I think he makes a very very solid
villain in this instance. Excellent.Yeah, and we've heard that, and
I'm going to butcher his name theactor who plays the high Evolutionary, but
(18:18):
Chuck Woodiwigi it Wouji again, Ohmy apologies, but I hear that he
does such a great job in thatrole, and now people are pointing to
him as a potential replacement for JonathanMajors, who plays King. People were
saying that, you know, hedoes such a good job, he's such
a good villain compared to what we'veseen with different versions of King so far.
(18:41):
People are saying that he should beconsidered like a variant and that would
be kind of a way to writehim in to replace the actor Jonathan Majors,
who is at the center of thislegal battle after he was accused of
domestic abuse and now apparently there arerumors around about him him potentially being replaced.
(19:02):
There is this writer, her nameis Joanna Robinson. She does research
for upcoming films, including the MCU. She has a new book coming regarding
the Marvel studios, and she saysthat you know, sources close to her
in the Marvel industry that they arepossibly changing all of their plans to make
Jonathan Majors the center of the universe. So the next phase as the big
(19:26):
bad quote, we do not knowwhat they're going to do. I've heard
conflicting stories about they're going to replacehim, they're not even considering replacing him,
etc. Etc. So again, these are all just rumors out there,
but people were saying that the actorwho played the higher evolutionary would be
perfect and would be easy to kindof slip in in place for Jonathan Majors.
(19:48):
Yeah, Marvel isn't in a toughsituation right now. Would not want
to be making the decisions. Iwould love their money, but would not
be wanting to make making any ofany of those decisions. But it would
be interesting to see one moves forBut you highly recommend I take it Guardians
of Galaxy three. I highly recommendGuardians of the Galaxy three. And you
know now that Marvel is all Disney, right, Deadpool is now Disney.
(20:11):
All of these things are now underthe mouse who is taking over our minds
and our entertainment. But anyways, besides that, yeah, it's there is
a less of a tolerance for thatkind of thing, right, And it
would be very tough to see whatkinds of decisions they need to make as
(20:33):
a result, because, yeah,Jonathan Majors king the Conqueror, he was
supposed to be the next big badand what do you do with that?
Do you stick by him or doyou change everything up? And these these
are plans that not only involve onemovie, they involve the entire mcu right,
every television show, you know, ten movies down the line and all
(20:59):
of that. So I have nocomment, no opinion. I you know,
above our paygrades, as as youalluded to earlier. Well we'll see
what happens. Always looking forward tothe next Marvel movie. But one movie
that you should look forward to maybeconsider if you have, if you have
an hour and a half to killor an hour forty four minutes to kill,
(21:22):
is Ticket to Paradise. This isa film that is on Amazon Prime.
It came out last year, andI remember when the publicity started for
this film because it's the reunification ofGeorge Clooney and Julia Roberts. It was
some of the most beloved charismatic actorsand people out there back on the same
screen. And I will say thatI highly recommend this movie if you're looking
(21:47):
for a nice, easy fun watch. My wife and I we were again
at home with the baby, goingthrough the movie, is going through the
plethora of options out there, andthen we came across Ticket to Paradise and
I was like, you know what, I think I heard good things about
that. I think I remember, you know, seeing the ads for that.
Maybe we can put this on andyou know, just put it on
(22:07):
as background, and we actually bothenjoyed it more than we expected. This
is a movie about a divorced coupleplayed by Clooney and Julia Roberts who have
to team up and travel to Balito stop their daughter from what they think
is making the same mistake they madetwenty five years earlier when they married each
other. She's throwing her career awayjust like her mother did. So I'm
(22:30):
the only one who can stop her. She doesn't listen, man Champagne,
oh too, please just leave thebottom, thank you. So basically,
their daughter just graduated from from college, she passed the bar, so she's
staying some time off before returning backto the States and become a lawyer.
And she goes to Bali with afriend and while there she runs into this
this man who she falls head overheels with and they both fall in love
(22:53):
with each other and decide to getmarried within like two months or so.
And so George Any and Julia Roberts, characters who cannot stand each other,
have to put aside their differences totry to work together to get them both
out of this marriage. And um, it's it's really it's really fun.
Despite despite Julia Roberts and George Clooney'scharacter being evil at times, like you're
(23:17):
just looking at them like, ohmy god, these guys are just evil.
Parents again, they're just so charismaticenough where you kind of like you're
okay with it to a certain extent, and so um. The movie is
a fun watch. It's set ina beautiful location in Bali, on the
ocean, on the beach. Theacting is fun, you know, the
story's fun. You know, nothingmonumental, nothing earth shattering, but it's
(23:38):
a it's a nice watch if youare at home and you want something to
if you want something to look atthat's visually stunning and soothing and watching fun
charismatic actors characters on the screen.I think this is for you. Okay,
now, this is not a musical, right, this is not a
musical now, Okay, thank god. I don't know if I could handle
(24:00):
handleback. But it is from thesame directors as Mamma Mia and whatnot,
and they've done that. You know, Mamma Mia is a very fun movie
as well, sort of along thesame vein. So all right, yeah,
well we'll check it out. Allright, thanks, gives it?
How many how many stars? Um, I'll give it, I'll give it.
I give a solid seven. It'sit's a good streaming movie. There
(24:22):
we go. So ticket to Paradise. We don't know if we're going to
have a ticket to Paradise later thisyear as far as with all the acting
strikes and whether or not we're goingto a work and be um get all
of the movies and shows that wewere hoping for, but stick with the
