Speaker 1 (00:01):
This is WBZ, Boston's news radio, redefining local news.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Lots of sun in Boston right now. It's fifty one
degrees at eleven o'clock on a breezy late spring day.
Good to be with you. I'm Nicole Davis, and here's
what's happening, starting now with the latest in Harvard University's
battle with the White House. Multiple reports say the administration
is now pushing the IRS to remove Harvard's tax exempt status,

(00:29):
as follows threats made by the President earlier this week,
after the school said it would defy the White House
order to limit campus activism. Here's ABC's Jonathan Carl.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
It is not clear that it is legal for the
president to order such an action. The IRS can revoke status,
it's happened before. It's very rare in the case of
a university, But the law clearly states that neither the President,
the Vice president, or anybody in the executive Office of
the President can tell the IRS to investigate specific taxpayers.

(01:01):
We've reached out to the IRS, We've reached out to
the Treasury Department, We've reached out to the White House
about this.

Speaker 2 (01:06):
No response, and Harvard is reacting to these reports a
spokesperson for the school telling WBZ News Radio, quote, there
is no legal basis to rescind Harvard's tax exempt status. Meantime,
the Department of Onland Security is demanding Harvard handover disciplinary
records for all international students, and DHS says if Harvard
does not comply, it will revoke the school certification to

(01:29):
the Student and Exchange Visitor program. That means Harvard would
not be able to admit foreign students. Harvard telling WBZ
the move follows on its statement that the school will
not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights, and
Harvard says, quote, we continue to stand by that statement.
At eleven oh two, the Trump administration says it plans

(01:49):
to appeal yesterday's ruling from a federal judge who said
he found probable cause to hold the administration in criminal
contempt of court. This is over a quote wilful disregard
for last months court order to stop two deportation flights
of migrants that was taken to El Salvador. They've been
locked up in a high security prison here CBS is
Scott MacFarlane.

Speaker 4 (02:08):
If there's a contempt of court finding by the judge,
he will allow the person accused in this case, the
Trump administration to purge that contempt. You want to honor
the initial order, you want to do something else to
rectify the matter, You can do that. If you don't,
then he begins sworn testimony or sworn depositions. If that
doesn't rectify things, he can appoint a prosecutor to try

(02:32):
to make a case.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
Now, one of the men deporter to El Salvador is
Kilmar Abrego Garcia. It's a name you've heard a lot lately.
He is a Salvador native who is sent back to
El Salvador despite a court order preventing his deportation. The
government has released documents that show Abrigo Garcia's wife had
filed an order of protection against him, which was later
dismissed your CBS's Katrina Kaufman.

Speaker 5 (02:54):
They're trying to say that these are the foundations of
their reason for deporting him out of this country. But
we received a statement from his wife, and she did
say that she claimed that she had previously had a
relationship where there was domestic violence, and that out of
an abundance of caution after a disagreement, she had sought
this protective order she ultimately dismissed it. She acknowledged that

(03:17):
no marriage is perfect, but what she said is that
this is not a justification for Ice to take him
out of the country now.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
Homeland Security says Garcia has a history of violence. Attorney
General Pam Bondi telling reporters that Garcia will not be
coming back to the United States. It's a beautiful day
out there, and it's going to stay nice for the
entire day. Today. We will have that breeze from the
west at about fifteen maybe twenty miles an hour at times,
and most of us will get up to about sixty.

(03:45):
So again, layers and you should be good. If you
want to be outside, maybe take out the laptop to
the back porch, or just go take an extra long
walk at lunch. For tonight, clear to partly cloudy, low
near forty in the city, thirty two or so if
you're north and west Friday, mix of sun and clouds,
a high year sixty maybe a little bit warmer north
and west mid fifties though on the capein islands. If

(04:05):
you are looking for summertime warmth and you are a
little disappointed that we haven't had it yet, just wait Saturday,
we'll have clouds and sun. It will be breezy, maybe
a couple of showers in the afternoon. Hi here on
this forecast, seventy seven degrees, maybe eighty in some spots
north and west, upper fifties though on the capein Islands
a little bit cooler on Sunday, with a high near sixty.

(04:28):
Right now, our temperatures fifty one in Gloucester, seeing fifty
one as well in Worcester, fifty two in Brockton, and
in Boston at eleven o six it is partly cloudy
and fifty one, with a deadline quickly approaching. Wbz's Drew
moholland reports the Registry of Motor Vehicles the rm V
now says it will accept walking appointments to get a
real ID.

Speaker 6 (04:49):
Yeah, starting next month. You'll need that new ID to
get past security at the airports, to gain access to
government buildings.

Speaker 7 (04:54):
And it has a chip at a barcode that allow
Department of Home and Security Personality SA agents to pull
up your biometric biographic information. And the idea is that
it's meant to reduce identity fraud.

Speaker 6 (05:07):
That's the deal here. This has been delayed countless times
over the years. You've heard us talking about it for
a while here, and the delay is mainly due to
pandemic error restrictions. But the theds draw a line in
the sand now with a May seventh headline. To comply
May seventh, put it in your calendar. Recent surveys find
about sixty percent of those in Massachusetts have already gotten
the real id. Drew Mahall and WBZ, Boston's news.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
Radio thousands of Bay Staters could get a free e
bike over the next few months.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
Massachusetts is accepting applications for its e bike voucher program
for the next two weeks. The vouchers range from eight
hundred dollars to twelve hundred dollars, depending on eligibility. Mark
Votor is the general manager of Landry's Bicycles in Boston,
where a similar program last fall was a success.

Speaker 3 (05:47):
People that ride e bikes ride further and more often,
so then it makes places further away that may not
have been accessible to them by bike.

Speaker 1 (05:54):
The partially motorized bikes can go as fast as twenty
eight miles an hour, giving some people an alternative way
to get to work or to run errands. Christopher Cruz
CBS News and.

Speaker 2 (06:05):

he allegedly exposed himself to students at Tabor Academy. Duo
Andraid was working in the school's kitchen through a contractor,
