Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is WBZY, Boston's news radio. We defining local news.
All right, this is a little bit ridiculous, isn't it.
Cloudy sky's thirty six degrees as we get started. It is, however, Wednesday,
and we are halfway home. Thanks for being with us
as we get started today, the News at six brought

(00:23):
to us by your new England Toyota Dealer, your hybrid
all wheel drive headquarters. Thanks for being here. I'm Jeff Brown.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
It seems like we might pass ball and go directly
to winter.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
Mostly cloudy, breezy at Chile today. Be a couple of
showers toward the Cape and the islands later today. The
high forty six.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
Is WBZ achi weather meteorologist Joe Lundberg. And don't be
surprised to see some snowflakes flying around early this morning.
The white hot Bruins strike early and often to make
it a seven game winning streak. This time they beat
the maple leafs of the Garden. David Pasternox scores his
four hundredth career goal for the Bruins. The Bees are
in Ottawa tomorrow night. Celtics are this again, but the

(01:01):
Sixers have their number again. Celtics will host the Grizzlies
right back at it tonight at the garden and a
short turnaround to Waits. It's just like the old days,
come to think of it. As the Patriots gets set
to kick off Week eleven in the NFL, it happens
tomorrow night against the Jets at Gillettes. And on the
forty third day of the historic government shutdown, the House
of Representatives gets ready to vote to end it.

Speaker 3 (01:24):
AA's four days for the objection the committee is a churn.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
The bill is now out of a House committee in planes, trains,
and automobiles are all needed to get the House back
to Capitol Hill. It'll be a close call with a
vote today. A GOP majority holds just two seats in
the House of Representatives. The bill, agreed to by the
Senate on Monday says absolutely nothing about an extension of
the Affordable Care Act, a hill that Democrats had been

(01:51):
willing to die on for weeks, only a promise by
Republicans to negotiate the matter next month. President Trump says
the shutdown should never have happened, and he supports this
bill and dis expected to sign it if passed to
end it. A big loss on late night television hits
Too Close to.

Speaker 4 (02:07):
All ABC's Jimmy Kimmel fought back tears.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
There was a boy who lived across the street and
two houses over.

Speaker 4 (02:15):
Broke the news his best friend from childhood lives. Bandleader
and sax player, Cleto Escobato, had died at the age
of fifty nine. They lived on the same Las Vegas
block and were inseparable since Jimmy was nine years old.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
We would stay up all night ordering pizzas to our neighbors' houses,
and we'd make crank calls.

Speaker 4 (02:35):
He didn't mention a cause of death, but Kimmel thanked
Escabato's doctors.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
Cherish your friends.

Speaker 4 (02:40):
We're not here forever, yeah. Bra Rodriguez, CBS News.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
The insect world is buzzin this morning with the discovery
of what's being called the lucifer bee. A scientist on
a mission to learn more about an endangered wildflower in
Australia stumbles across this critter instead, which features a pair
of demon like horns. Discovered first six years ago. The
cat is out of the bag now about the new bee.

(03:04):
Experts say they have no idea what the purpose of
the horns might be, and wild Kingdom loves that dirty
water too. WBCs Drew Mulholland is here with a story.
Good morning, Andrew Morny.

Speaker 5 (03:14):
Jeffrey video shows a small alligator going in and out
of the Charles Robert What, Yeah, you're right here in
Boston an alligator. The video has since gone viral, but
the animal remains elusive. Spotted first over the weekend by
a couple just passing by, Witnesses say it's real, despite
social media cries up AI, I feel.

Speaker 3 (03:32):
Like my dad here, Drew?

Speaker 1 (03:33):
Is this ai?

Speaker 2 (03:34):
Or is this real?

Speaker 5 (03:36):
Seen not far from Mit, animal control is called In
fun fact, alligators are illegal to own in Massachusetts.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
I guess that's important to know. Sure, thank you, Andrew.
Won't be surprised to see a couple of snowfloweries this
morning here in Greater Boston. It is a possibility some
of us saw them yesterday, just a couple here and there.
It doesn't really count though, because you need about one
tenth of an inch of snow accumulation for it to
be considered the first snowfall. But still it's cold. It's

(04:04):
early for it to be this cold too, thirty six
right now in Boston, and it actually feels like we're
stuck in the twenties. We again do have some twenties
on the board this morning, and we're going to be
seeing mostly cloudy skies today, a couple of showers along
the way as well as temperatures do get into the
mid forties, so slightly warmer than yesterday, but it'll be
hard to tell. Cloudy cold thirties overnight tonight, breezy with

(04:27):
a mix of clouds and sun tomorrow, and we may
hit fifty degrees tomorrow afternoon, and to wrap up the
work week on Friday, looks like a mixture of sun
and clouds. Continued, breezy in highs once again below average,
only in the forties right now thirty six and mostly
cloudy coming up on sunrise here in the city at
six oh six on this Wednesday morning. Despite hopes for
an end to the government shutdown, the misery continues at

(04:48):
airports nationwide, and that includes logan.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
As the number of flights getting delayed and canceled increases,
so do anxiety levels.

Speaker 6 (04:56):
I'm trying to just say positive about it, but I
have been checking constantly for the last week and hoping
that nothing changed. But yeah, it's been a daily thing
making sure that my flights are on time.

Speaker 3 (05:08):
I don't think I've ever looked at the flight of
probation as much as I have. To add to the uncertainty.
Thanksgiving is just over two weeks away, and at the
moment there's no telling how current disruptions will affect future flights.
We have backup plans, on backup plan, Hellogan James Rojas
w b Z Boston's news radio.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
Race for US Senator is on in Massachusetts, and Republicans
are ready to throw their support to a new old
name in the race. The strategy behind John Deaton's early
entry into the race to unset longtime Senator Ed Markey
appears to be working. Dozens in the state Republican Party
are on board and say they will support an official
endorsement of Deaton during his upcoming party meeting this month.

(05:48):
This is Deeton's second attempt at the US Senate in
as many years. He tried to unseat Senator Elizabeth Warren
last year. The Massachusetts State Lottery is paying it forward
this holiday.

Speaker 7 (05:59):
The mass Lottery is hosting a holiday toy drive at
claim centers across the state. Your kindness will help out
organizers like toys for Tots and other local efforts, and
it's also a time to raise awareness that lottery tickets
are not a suitable holiday gift for those under eighteen.
Toys can be dropped off between now and December tenth
at the Lottery's headquarters in Dorchester and at locations in Braintree, Lawrence,
New Bedford, West Springfield and Worcester. Matt Sheer WBZ, Boston's

Speaker 2 (06:24):
This diamond shines bright, but not as bright as it
could have been.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
Where's the caboo?

Speaker 2 (06:29):
Experts are frankly a little disappointed with the sale price
of a blue diamond, checking in at ten carrots, the
price tag twenty five point six million dollars at auction.
Officials with Christie's in Switzerland say they expected someone would
be willing to pay more for the Melon blue diamond.
Worldwide economic concerns the reason for the reality check for
the gem, named in honor of the late American arts

(06:50):
patron Rachel Bunny Mellon. The disappointment is justified. The last
time the blue Melon Diamond changed hands, more than a
decade ago, it went for more than thirty two million dollars.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
