Texas followed by your message to eight one.

improved and always free iHeartRadio app, tap that red microphone,
leave the keyword and we'll get your party started. But

(02:13):
let's get the party started.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
Number one.

Speaker 4 (02:15):
First off, Good morning Mark, how you doing, buddy?

Speaker 1 (02:20):
You Dinet muted yourself player, Good morning Hey. Every time
Mark travels, we got our little challenges. Every once in
a while. My guy is doing his thing. He's in
the Caribbean.

Speaker 4 (02:39):
He is promoting his All Caribbean wrestling and that's what
happens when you're when you're a boss, you got to travel.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
Hey, I like to say that I'm having a great time,
but hard. I don't like saying the last thing you're
gonna see is me on a beat. My wife will
tell you, like I'm an indoor dollar there.

Speaker 1 (03:03):
It is me too. I like to sit on the couch.
I don't like to be I don't want to be
in the yard. Roadman around too much.

Speaker 5 (03:10):
And that's my idea of vacation. An is a high
end hotel.

Speaker 4 (03:14):
Yeah, I'm with you on that, player, I'm with you
on that. So Mark will be remote today, but as
always he'll be bringing it. He will also be bringing
you his world's strongest take. That's right, world's strongest take.
So he will definitely be around for that. But I
want to get into the NBA. Last night, it was

(03:35):
all made official and the number one pick for the
Dallas Mavericks is.

Speaker 6 (03:42):
With the first pick in the twenty twenty five NBA Draft,
the Dallas Mavericks selects Cooper Flag from Duke University.

Speaker 4 (03:54):
And Cooper Flag, as we knew, was going to go
number one, and just like anything else, you know, the process.
Is there the one thing that I hate about the draft,
the one thing that I hate, I know it's for TV.
I know the reason. And we've done TV. We've done
some things that we understand has to happen. But the
reality of it is is we all knew that Cooper

(04:16):
Flag was gonna be the first pick.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
What are we waiting on.

Speaker 4 (04:18):
He's sitting over there sweating, showing arm pit sweat the
whole time he's going through a suit.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
We knew that was happening.

Speaker 2 (04:26):
Hey, why was the extradition and not hired because there
were a lot of people in the room.

Speaker 5 (04:32):
That took the jackets off because it was hot.

Speaker 4 (04:34):
Well, I think the main reason was the NBA is
trying to save money because they're paying these dudes.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
Wait, oh my god, you mean to tell me that
they diamond on the utility.

Speaker 4 (04:44):
Yeah, they like hold on man, how much they say
it's gonna cost us to run this thing?

Speaker 1 (04:48):
We need to be in.

Speaker 4 (04:49):
We're gonna be out. But yes, Cooper Flag was the
number one pick. Then obviously Dylan Harper was the number
two pick, and his mom has gone on viral. You know,
every year there's a mom that goes viral when it comes.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
To the draft.

Speaker 4 (05:04):
Whether it's the NFL or the NBA or Major League Baseball,
somebody mama is going viral. And last night Dylan Harper's
mom went viral. They also got Carter Bryant. The Spurs
did with their fourteenth pick, but we were waiting for
the pick for the Texas Longhorns, our guy, Trey Johnson,

(05:25):
and he didn't have to wait that long.

Speaker 6 (05:31):
With the sixth pick in the twenty twenty five NBA Draft,
the Washington Wizards selects Trey Johnson's from the University of Texas.

Speaker 4 (05:43):
The hook them Horns got their guy, the Washington Wizards.
I hated it for him that he went to the Wizards,
but this is a good opportunity for him. And he
spoke right after with Travis Reichak of here in Austin.
He was at the draft and he got a chance
to interview Trey Johnson.

Speaker 7 (06:02):
Here he is Trey Johnson, the newest Washington Wizard. And Trey,
obviously this has been a dream for years now. But
what was the moment actually like when you heard your
name called?

Speaker 8 (06:15):
It was really just amazing hearing my name cor By
the commissioner, something you dream of most definitely, and it
was just great heaving my family there, just them being
there to experience that with me, and they had probably
the same motion that I did.

Speaker 1 (06:27):
It was just amazing.

Speaker 7 (06:28):
I feel like last year in Texas we got to
see a lot of your game, but maybe not all
of it.

Speaker 8 (06:33):
What are you excited to show with the NBA level,
but also my defensibility and.

Speaker 1 (06:37):
Also my playmaker.

Speaker 8 (06:38):
I feel like those are areas that I'm improving in
and also areas that I'm ready to show off.

Speaker 7 (06:43):
Trey Johnson, now a first round pick, Thanks so much
for the time track that appreciates all.

Speaker 9 (06:47):
Hi.

Speaker 4 (06:48):
Hey, he said my defense that more. That boy have
been working on his defense, Mark.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
Hey, I hope he did, because you know, that was
one of the things that was left to be desired
with his game because he was kind of frail and
in one of those guys that's gonna have to grow
into that six five six six body, and you know,
if he can, if he can fix his defense hard,
then yeah, I can see him being just as Bible

(07:16):
commodity as as Dylan Harper was that this.

Speaker 4 (07:20):
Is uh, this was a good, good look for for
Trey Johnson as far as just getting there. But speaking
of look, did you get a chance to see that
outfit that he was rocking?

Speaker 5 (07:31):
You know what I saw it?

Speaker 2 (07:33):
And let's just say that, you know, let's just say
that his tailor needs to be thrown.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
We're gonna just go with different.

Speaker 5 (07:49):
That's a different cat.

Speaker 4 (07:50):
Huh, that's not even that's not even a Dallas Look,
you know what I'm saying, that's that's that's not what
what they do in Dallas. You know, I'm just curious,
like what what happened?

Speaker 1 (08:02):
What happened?

Speaker 4 (08:03):
Everybody was everybody was texting me like, Oh, that's that's
what y'all doing, that's what y'all doing. I was like,
that's he.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
He might know the future.

Speaker 5 (08:12):
Maybe that's the Maybe that's what the future that is
gonna look like.

Speaker 1 (08:16):
I'm with you on that, man, I'm not.

Speaker 5 (08:18):
Gonna rock with.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
No.

Speaker 1 (08:23):
No.

Speaker 5 (08:23):
I would have rather won.

Speaker 1 (08:27):
You might. You might need a bro, you might, you
might need the rock of.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
Yeah, it was a little bit of someones where the wrap.

Speaker 1 (08:38):
Oh yeah, I would have rather he went with that.

Speaker 5 (08:41):
And and uh and have you know like some of
those Hawaiian lanes or.

Speaker 1 (08:44):
Something like it's a little bit different, for sure.

Speaker 5 (08:48):
Was different.

Speaker 1 (08:49):
Man.

Speaker 4 (08:50):
Was there any surprising picks that you saw or thought
was unexpected during that draft? Another thing is it was
an emotional draft. There was so many people crying. Yeah, man,
it's life changing moments for a lot of folks.

Speaker 2 (09:07):
Well, you think about the journey of you and your
boys and how many hours you spend in the gym
and how many hours you spend driving, and the sacrifices
that you make financially from the time they're seven eight
years old to the time that they graduate, and you
realize in that moment it.

Speaker 5 (09:28):
Was not for nothing, right that my oh my god,
like it worked.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
All of this is this is why we did it,
and that kid is going to be able to have
have something that has their name on it for the
rest of the time. And I can see every parent man,
im boohoo whoo, my kids have success.

Speaker 1 (09:53):
Right.

Speaker 4 (09:54):
Well, because like you said, like you said, you start
to listen and look and know the journey on which
you have gone through this entire work ethic. Right, you
got a chance to listen to the Baylor player that
went number three overall and talked about his whole life
was for seven years he had electricity through a generator.

(10:19):
Through a generator, that was the only way that they
could produce electricity because he grew up in the Bahamas,
where you are actually right now. So you start to
truly understand the journey of a lot of these people
and these players and how much sacrifice is really being done.

(10:39):
And so it's always good because you know, we just
had the NFL Draft, now we have the NBA draft.
Major League Baseball Draft is coming up just around the corner,
and you start to understand that, hey, yeah, this is
what it's all about.

Speaker 2 (10:54):
Yeah, and hard to answer your question, No, I was
not shocked. The only thing that I was shocked about
in the whole draft was the fact that the Phoenix
Sons drafted a future really I think defensive player of
the Year candidate and then they traded him a few

(11:15):
minutes later. That's the only thing that shot for.

Speaker 4 (11:17):
A dude that failed the physical to go to the Lakers,
and now we're trying to they chating his grave from
an F to an ay.

Speaker 1 (11:25):
Just like when you when you love you want to
trade it.

Speaker 4 (11:28):
I could pass this physical, I promise you when we
come back. Coach sartin standing on business and he let
him know and as matter of fact, he said it
with his chest. The folks that know the Longhorn did
a great job. We'll continue that conversation and so much
more on a throwback Thursday edition of The Morning Kickoff
right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred. Coming up,

(11:52):
in the next segment, we'll have our guy, Eric Henry
of Horns twenty four seven joining us talk all things
long Horns, and at eight seven our Legends of the
Locker Room segment. We will be joined by Mike Cabongo,
former Texas Longhorn, lifetime Longhorn, and he'll be telling us
what he has going on now because it does have

(12:14):
something to do with basketball in the Austin area. Also,
make sure you get over to the preset and lock
us and tell your friends. Tell everybody you know that
The Morning Kickoff is on from seven to nine AM
and it's always free on the iHeartRadio app. You got
the world's strongest man in WWE Hall of Famer, the

(12:35):
Mark Henry, myself and our guy Marcus holding it down
Monday through Friday. All right, Mark, I know you were
traveling yesterday and we played a lot. Coach Sark met
with the great folks over at third and Longhorn. He
talked to the former players Jeremy Hills, Rob Babers, Fozzie Whittaker,

(12:56):
Derek Johnson, Alex Okaferm and me and Alex got a
beef wick coach Sark and I'll get into that in
just a minute.

Speaker 1 (13:02):
And of course our guy Nick Shuley.

Speaker 4 (13:05):
But Sark has been, you know, saying it with his
chest and rightfully so because Coach Sark he is a
man that believes in his program. He's a man that
believes in his team, and he believes in the foundation
that is being set. But one of the things about
coach Sark that he mentioned is taking the job here

(13:28):
at the University of Texas. And really I can't believe
that he didn't know about Austin, Texas and he thought
it was a West Texas town.

Speaker 10 (13:37):
To mind you, I'm living in Tuscaloose, Alabama right now. Yeah,
I'm trying to wrap my brain around another small college
town and in my mind, I have this vision of
brown and tumbleweeds. Remind you, I've never been to Austin,
Texas a day in my life.

Speaker 8 (13:54):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (13:55):
Crazy.

Speaker 10 (13:55):
The whole interview process was done over zoom.

Speaker 1 (13:59):
So never mind.

Speaker 10 (14:00):
I had never been on campus, never been in dk R,
I've never been.

Speaker 1 (14:03):
To Austin, Texas. So I'm thinking I'm going to love it.
I'm like, come on, man, love it.

Speaker 2 (14:14):
All right, we got it. Coach Sart gotta get out
more like when we talked to him next, Oh, we
gotta do a geography lesson, like this is this is unacceptable, coach, Sorry,
it's unacceptable.

Speaker 4 (14:32):
I think he's well versed in the city of Austin,
now let's just say that. But the one thing that
he always tries to talk about is, you know, bringing
that melting pot of competitiveness.

Speaker 1 (14:44):
Where are you from? Where are you from?

Speaker 4 (14:46):
And this is where I got a little problem with
what coach Shark had to say.

Speaker 1 (14:53):
Right where are you from?

Speaker 5 (14:54):
Houston?

Speaker 10 (14:57):
Wacom Fluville?

Speaker 4 (15:10):
My man said, I thought John Day was the only
one that came out of Flugerville. Texas has had some
Fluckerville players that have come to the University of Texas.
But you can't be throwing shots at my town, man,
you can't be throwing shots at Flugerville.

Speaker 2 (15:25):
Listen, it's spilled wrong. First off, Why why not just that? Why?

Speaker 4 (15:37):
Man, it's a family it's a family name, so that
is how they spelled their name.

Speaker 1 (15:41):
So that is how that works. You know that.

Speaker 5 (15:45):
I think that they didn't know how to spell very well.

Speaker 4 (15:49):
So everything else worked out. I mean, it's pronounced the
same way. But Sart Sark understands what's going on. But
he was talking about the repetitiveness, and of course there's
always those haters that are out there and talking about
the University of Texas and how they go about their
business and what is going on and all they have.

Speaker 1 (16:11):
And they talk about their money. They don't even have
the most money.

Speaker 4 (16:15):
But one thing that Sark can not be denied is
the fact of what he's been able to.

Speaker 1 (16:21):
Achieve in such a short period of time. And he
listed the list of achievements by so many for you,
if I know nothing.

Speaker 10 (16:33):
Who's the one school that's gone to back to back
college football Playoffs, back to.

Speaker 1 (16:36):
Back semi finals Orange. Who's the one school.

Speaker 10 (16:39):
Their first year in the SEC went to the SEC
Championship Game? Who has the most draft picks in the
NFL draft.

Speaker 1 (16:44):
The last two years?

Speaker 10 (16:46):
Okay, Who's had six d linemen drafted in the last
three years? Five running backs drafted in the last in
the last three years, who's had a receiver taken in
the first round the last two years, who as the
last year signed the number one class in the country,
the year before that, a top three class in the country,
the year before that, a top five recruiting class in

(17:07):
the country.

Speaker 1 (17:08):
All the while that's occurring.

Speaker 10 (17:10):
At a top five public institution in the United States,
all the while being part of an athletic department that's
won four to the five of the last Athletic Director's Cups.

Speaker 1 (17:21):
So when you talk about like.

Speaker 10 (17:22):
Minded individuals pushing each other the new heights and whether
it's track and field national championships, rowing, golf, softball, volleyball,
women's basketball final four, okay, but all the while you're
doing it in the city of Austin, which, oh, by
the way, is the largest city in the US with
no pro sports, So no NFL, no Major League Baseball,

(17:43):
no NBA. So who are getting those nil deals?

Speaker 1 (17:47):
Boom preak, He said it would.

Speaker 2 (17:53):
Hard. He basically just spread the whole room and put
as posters of success and the reason why Austin is
Austin on the walls. Now I know why they hate
us hard. I asked you yesterday or day before yesterday.

Speaker 5 (18:13):
Why why why.

Speaker 2 (18:14):
Does everybody hate Texas? Now I know why. It's the
greatness hate. We talked about this last year. There's such
a thing as greatness hate. Michael Jordan had the greatness hate.
Magic Johnson had the greatness hate. There were people that
don't like you because you succeed, You make it look
easy and and.

Speaker 1 (18:36):
And they don't like it.

Speaker 2 (18:38):
And I say that jokingly about Shelton Benjamin and Randy
Orton as wrestlers. They made stuff look easy. They don't
even diet. I'm so I hate Shelton Benjamin. He ho
hos ding dongs and twigs and cooks and kittles, and

(18:58):
he'll never gain an what you say, the veins popped
some skill, all.

Speaker 5 (19:07):
The veins pop out in his body.

Speaker 2 (19:09):
I'm like godly man many hey, hey, hey, hey, hey hey,
that's why they hate Austin.

Speaker 1 (19:20):
Now now I get it.

Speaker 5 (19:20):
I'm sorry. I will never ask you about why they
hate us. I know why the US.

Speaker 4 (19:26):
Yeah, it's a it's an interesting Yeah, I noticed how
you did it. I was gonna gloss over and I
was gonna glass over it. But the reality of the
conversation is just that Texas is in a place that
we had, Texas has.

Speaker 1 (19:42):
Not been in in a long time.

Speaker 4 (19:44):
And I remember, I remember what it was like when
Texas was at the top, and it wasn't just football,
it was every sport. And yes, you could say, well
would win the championships, but they were in content. They
were going to BCS games. They were able to excite

(20:07):
a city and generate an energy everywhere that you went.
And over the last few seasons, to Sark's credit, back
to back playoffs semi finals.

Speaker 1 (20:21):
Back to back.

Speaker 4 (20:22):
They expanded the playoffs in Texas was the only team
that got in from the previous playoffs. So the model
of success Billy Lucci and all the Sooners and everything
that were out there that we're talking and everybody in
Alabama and Tuscaloosa and everybody that's been talking about Texas

(20:46):
not being able to succeed in the SEC. Now they're
all like, well, well well this no, you said that
the success was not going to happen. They were not
ready and they've come in and kicked the doors and
rearrange furniture.

Speaker 5 (21:05):
Yeah, harj.

Speaker 2 (21:06):
I almost had to be separated in the airport from
a guy yesterday that came up talking sports to me.
Because he listens to the show and he's like, man,
we sucked in now on recruiting this show, I said, no,
we're not. I said, we're recruiting by need. And the
fact that the people that don't want to come here

(21:26):
because they're afraid of competing for the spot and they
just want a spot handed to them, we don't want
them anyway. And if you rip, excuse me, if you
realize that Texas is loaded, you got to bring your
a game. If you're not willing to compete for that,
then please go somewhere else because they don't want you here.

Speaker 3 (21:47):
We want competitors, our bat within us.

Speaker 1 (21:52):
With losing it. Kay dood, kay DoD. But you know
what we can do.

Speaker 4 (21:58):
We can welcome our guy, Eric Henry of Horns twenty
four to seven coming up next to talk all things
Texas longhornse and we'll get his thoughts on how Texas
is recruiting and what they're doing in the portal right
here on the Morning Kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone. Welcome back to the morning Kickoff right

(22:19):
here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. And
it's Thursday, so it's only right that we have our
guy Eric Henry of Horns twenty four to seven. You
can follow him at Eric c Henry Underscore and as always,
thank you for joining us. But most importantly, how about
our guy Trey Johnson That we finally get a chance

(22:41):
to hear his name call six pick in the draft,
and now he starts his journey into the NBA.

Speaker 5 (22:48):
Good morning Morning has always fels appreciate y'all having me on.

Speaker 11 (22:51):
Yeah, we start right there with the big news of
last night, Trey Johnson.

Speaker 5 (22:55):
I won't lie arj and Mark.

Speaker 11 (22:58):
I you know, coming into the draft, I thought Trey
would go between five and eight. When you saw some
of the stuff that was coming about Ace Bailey right
him turning down workouts, I was like, okay, the draft
war could get shaken up a little bit. And then
we saw the kid con I'm forgetting his last name,
the second dookie who jumped a bit on the board
and I got a look concerned.

Speaker 5 (23:17):
I'm like, oh, is there gonna be a slide? Right?
So luckily Trey went six.

Speaker 11 (23:21):
I think it's a great landing spot for him a
team that needs a score. If there was one spot,
and I promised this isn't a cheap shot. I'm just
being real. One spot that I didn't think would be
a good fit for him was Charlotte becausef you know
anything about Trey Johnson and his psycho work ethic, I
don't think that would a match up well with mister
LaMelo Ball, who likes to, you know, ride out of
the Spectrum Center at one hundred miles an hour in

(23:42):
showcase his.

Speaker 5 (23:43):
Style of game.

Speaker 1 (23:44):
Right.

Speaker 11 (23:44):
So, but all things considered, I think it was a
good landing spot for Trade six in DC.

Speaker 5 (23:49):
Well, I'm gonna tell you right now.

Speaker 2 (23:51):
I thought that that Trey looked physically great.

Speaker 5 (23:56):
I saw some of the workout videos.

Speaker 2 (23:58):
I cannot say with his fist he did what he
did not look good in that, but he's gained about
ten fifteen pounds, so he I guess he's made the
effort to make himself more physical.

Speaker 5 (24:16):
And he mentioned that he's been working on his defense.

Speaker 2 (24:19):
So maybe we didn't get the full Trade Johnson that
we wanted to see at ut will see it in
the pros.

Speaker 5 (24:28):
Yeah, Mark, you know, I think you appreciate this.

Speaker 11 (24:30):
It's fitting that I'm speaking to the world's strongest man
when I give you this quote. One of the funniest
lines from Trey last year was him talking about enjoying
the weight room right, and a reporter asked, so, how
much do you bench?

Speaker 5 (24:40):
And Trey said, na I don't give him eat that bench.
That's a mess up my shot.

Speaker 11 (24:44):
And we kind of laughed because we're like Trey, you's
seeing yourself. You probably could use a top of bench
rep to too. You know, I don't want to suggest
it to him, but he probably could use a couple
reps on meath the bench.

Speaker 2 (24:54):
When I heard that, I knew that he needed to
be psychologically reprogrammed for the sport because there's a lot
of people that were raised to not trained with ways
it used to be tall, muscle bound. And you know,
if you go over to the North end of the
University of Texas the Lecture Start Center, doctor Jan Tide

(25:16):
and doctor Terry Todde created this the largest physical culture
library in the world, and there's a large segment in
the library that talks about how training has evolved, in
the philosophy in which training has evolved, and players adopting
to those philosophies. It's an incredible thing. If you ever

(25:39):
get a chance to go, yeah.

Speaker 5 (25:41):
That's really quick Marcus on your point.

Speaker 11 (25:43):
Yeah, in terms of maybe Texas not getting the full
tray Johnson, I think because of what was asked of
Trade to be so much and to do so many
things him. Now in the NBA, you will get a
chance to see a wider range of his game because
he's not having to be offense, right.

Speaker 2 (25:57):
He's gonna be able to run around screens and being
more of a Reallen type than to be a point guard.

Speaker 4 (26:06):
Initiaar Yeah, Yeah, we're talking to Eric Henry of Horns
twenty four to seven. You can follow him at Eric
c Henry Underscore on social media, and there's been a
lot of conversation on the Texas football field as well
about the workouts and how players are starting to show up. Obviously,
Arch Manning gets run every single day, but there's some

(26:28):
other guys that are getting an opportunity that running back
room has been ranked as high as number two or
three in some of the rankings. Obviously with CJ. Baxter
coming back. But Trey Wisner you talked about putting on weight.
Trey Wisner is somebody that has been spending his time
in the weight room as well.

Speaker 11 (26:47):
Yeah, Harje, No, I'm really interested to see where Trey
comes in the fall, because he came in pretty light
in spring.

Speaker 5 (26:52):
Right came in down five pounds, actually six pounds.

Speaker 11 (26:55):
He was at one hundred and ninety fours when he's
listened at, compared to two hundred Trey was listed at
last year. And of course, you know, you guys know
that way fluctuates during the season, so it might not
be one hundred percent accurate.

Speaker 5 (27:04):
But my point is I'll be interested to see where
Trade comes in because.

Speaker 11 (27:07):
I think in speaking with him during the fall, he
was open and candid about he didn't feel comfortable making
guys missing the open field. Right, just wanted to secure
the ball, put his head down, you know, make sure
you're not fumbling becau.

Speaker 5 (27:19):
Obviously that was an issue with some of the backs
last year.

Speaker 11 (27:22):
I think if Tray can play around two hundred and
two to oh five while gaining that ability and confidence
to make guys missing the open field, that will be
huge and really quick. Our groom position group. You didn't
mention there the linebacker room. I know the running backers
were rated really high that linebacker room. Hearing great things
Leongo Lafoule, Anthony Hill. I'll say it again in a
two linebacker based defense. I would there are two linebackers

(27:44):
in the nation. I'd rather start with Leongo Lafoo and
Anthony Hill.

Speaker 1 (27:48):
Yeah, those are some guys that are happen.

Speaker 5 (27:50):
What about Bow.

Speaker 2 (27:52):
Everybody keeps saying that this kid Bow is a real
grown man already elijahs marks.

Speaker 5 (27:57):
On Elijah Bow Barns. Yes, that's it.

Speaker 11 (28:00):
Texas has had a very very good I don't want
to call it luck, but I think just the way
they've recruited guys, even Bo Barnes or Ty Anthony Smith,
guys who aren't you know, six four six five, two thirty.
Maybe you're you know, older school, bigger linebackers, right, but
guys who physical downhill, play at the point of attack,
those type of linebackers they having Bo Barnes another one.

Speaker 1 (28:21):
Of those guys.

Speaker 4 (28:22):
Yeah, it's unbelievable with some of the stuff that has
been going on, and you start to look at what
Texas has on campus, what they're recruiting towards, and the
ability to continue to flip the script. Speaking of flipping
the script, you know that coach Sark met with the
folks over at third and Longhorn and he went through
the list of accomplishments of the University of Texas, the

(28:43):
City of Austin, everything that goes into it. Are you
shocked by the bravado that he's showing or is this Hey,
he's feeling good about where this university is right now.

Speaker 1 (28:56):
But I'm not.

Speaker 11 (28:59):
I'm not harge because here's the thing, right, And I
made this point on our podcast yesterday. You know, we
talk about players all the time growing into themselves and developing, right, coaches,
I feel like don't get that same leeway. And maybe
it's because they hold the title of coach, which means
they're supposed to know everything. Steve Starkejan of course X's
and O's genius, right, you know that from his time

(29:21):
in SC Washington BYU.

Speaker 5 (29:24):
But now he's no longer a thirty two, thirty three,
thirty four year old head coach. He's in his early fifties.

Speaker 11 (29:30):
I think the level of confidence that he has having
worked under a Nick Saban and Pete Carroll now seeing hey,
my way is working, it's producing wins, it's getting talent.

Speaker 12 (29:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (29:41):
I do think this rule from.

Speaker 11 (29:42):
The puffish chests out a little bit, But of course
you can't fully do it until you win that national title.
I'm not surprised that Steve is being a little more
in bold in terms of its.

Speaker 4 (29:51):
Commidence, and it's part of the conversation that he's having
with some players in that room that got a lot
of testosterone and had a lot of accomplishments as well.
So it kind of brings that out of you every
once in a while, which I'm all for it. I'm
I'm here for it, and we're enjoying the ride as
we go, because before you got here, Eric, there were
some lean years where things was not rolling in this direction.

(30:15):
As always, brother, we appreciate you taking the time, and
we'll do this again next week. Enjoy the rest of
the week.

Speaker 5 (30:22):
Man, appreciate it, Fellas.

Speaker 1 (30:24):
Thanks you always good talking it to our guy Eric
Henry twenty four seven. Coming up next, we're.

Speaker 4 (30:31):
Gonna have a conversation put some respect on my guy.

Speaker 1 (30:35):
In htown, CJ. Stroud. Was his year better than what
we actually thought it was?

Speaker 2 (30:42):
Then?

Speaker 4 (30:42):
What we've said right here on the morning kickoff on
sports Radio AM thirteen.

Speaker 1 (30:46):
Hundred the Zone.

Speaker 4 (30:50):
Great stuff with our guy Eric Henry of Horns twenty
four seven. Get over and check out the latest at
Hornce twenty four seven.

Speaker 1 (30:57):
Right now, I.

Speaker 4 (30:58):
Want to make sure that we give you an opportunity
to win a pair of tickets to go see coheb
and Cambria September the eighteenth at the Moody Center. All
you got to do is get over to that always
free iHeartRadio app. If you haven't downloaded it, download it,
search out AM thirteen hundred the zone, click it as
your favorite, but then tap that red microphone and leave

(31:20):
the keyword horns.

Speaker 1 (31:22):
Horns is your keyword of the day.

Speaker 4 (31:24):
To win a chance to get a pair of tickets
to go see Coheed and Cambria September the eighteenth at
the Moody Center, and make sure you tell everybody to
download the always Free iHeartRadio app. I want to get
into this conversation real quick because CJ Stroud season might
have been even better than what we thought it was

(31:46):
last year. You know, everybody always talks about a sophomore slump,
and on the surface, it really could be that way.
But my guy Sam Monson thought about CJ and looked
at it and was like, hey, maybe.

Speaker 1 (31:59):
His year was not as bad as we thought.

Speaker 13 (32:02):
I mean, look, year one was fantastic. It's one of
the best rookie seasons of all time. In a weird way,
I was more impressed by shrouding year two because the
situation around him completely fell apart. Offensive line was hot, garbage,
couldn't pick up his stunt, couldn't you know, any sort
of exotic look from in terms of pressure. The thing
just collapsed completely, and he still, like on the biggest

(32:24):
situations on third and fifteen, still found a play. I
was really impressed by him in year two. So if
the situation around him can be piece back together this year,
and look, they've made big strides at least a receiver
with what they've done in the draft, I mean I
have very high expectations from Straud.

Speaker 1 (32:43):
You know, think about it.

Speaker 4 (32:44):
Mark, we talked about this, We talked about how the
offensive line was bad, but he still put up decent
numbers and for somebody that was running around for his life,
he's done a really good job for that.

Speaker 2 (32:57):
He has done a good job. I'm laughing because because
in the break I text you that c J. Stroud
did great when he wasn't laying on the ground or
or being slammed to the.

Speaker 1 (33:08):
Turf, I was like, what are you talking about? What
are you talking about.

Speaker 2 (33:12):
And then brothers came back and said that the offensive
line was hot garbage, and I said, well.

Speaker 1 (33:20):
Don't hold nothing back, but the hard they were bad.

Speaker 2 (33:25):
That offensive line was bad, and they you know, for
lack of a better term, were hot garbage. They improved
that offensive line and they bring in a running back
that's really, really good and regardless of whether or not
he's been injured, now that running back room is more

(33:47):
ready with a it's it's tailor made for.

Speaker 5 (33:51):
Him to have a bounce back here if you will.

Speaker 1 (33:54):
And it's almost that time for them to get back
into training camp. Will continue those conversation and look forward
to it.

Speaker 4 (34:01):
But you know as well as I do, it is
an important time for the Houston Texans. As they get
ready for camp, they start to lock people in and
they understand that this is our moment. Demko Ryans has
done a great job of leading that team.

Speaker 1 (34:20):
Made some hard decisions.

Speaker 4 (34:22):
We talked about Bobby Slovak, who was supposed to be
the next guy to be a head coach somewhere, and
that failed miserably. And now they start to rebuild that
offensive line. They bring in some key pieces with Nick
Chubb to offset what Joe Mixon is doing, bringing in
a better wide receiving corps and changing some people out.

(34:46):
So this is a big off season and a big
season for the Houston Texans as they start to try
to lock in on the AFC South.

Speaker 2 (34:57):
And they'll get better after week seven week when they
get the full complement of their wide receivers. Imagine having Collins, Kirk,
and Dale on the field at the same time.

Speaker 5 (35:11):
Yeah, who do you double cover?

Speaker 14 (35:14):
Like?

Speaker 5 (35:15):
That's gonna be a big problem to have. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (35:17):
And then you also you still have some of the
rookies that they have brought in. When you look at
a Jaden Higgins and a Jalen Noel, big time prospects
that are ready to make a move. You still have
Dalton Schultz on as your top tight end, a guy
that the Cowboys let walk. And I'm a big, big

(35:38):
fan of Jake Ferguson anyway, so I wasn't really hurt
when Dalton left. But you start looking at this team
as a whole, and then you also look at their division.
You look at Indianapolis, They're trying to figure out who's
going to be their quarterback. Jacksonville new coaching staff. This
is one of those quarterbacks and Trevor Lawrence that does.

Speaker 1 (35:59):
He firely finally.

Speaker 4 (36:01):
Take a step or is Tennessee gonna make a move
now that they have cam Ward their future franchise quarterback.
This division which the Texans always find a way to
win it, now it's c J. Stroud is the top
top quarterback in that division.

Speaker 5 (36:20):
Well now the top quarterback in that division.

Speaker 2 (36:23):
Uh. He also has one of the top coaches and
coaching staffs. When you mentioned that last year they had
people in place that you thought, oh, this guy is
gonna be a great asset to the coaching staff.

Speaker 5 (36:38):
And then they weren't. They were. They were just like
that offensive line. They just didn't fit that.

Speaker 2 (36:44):
Maybe they weren't the they weren't the juice in the
hot garbage, but they were.

Speaker 5 (36:49):
They were. They were a part of that. Now they
have a.

Speaker 2 (36:54):
Well, uh seasoned group guys that are proven and I
take that over.

Speaker 5 (37:00):
The future potential coach.

Speaker 4 (37:03):
Yeah, well, and I'm looking forward to seeing exactly how
they're going to jail. They've obviously spent some time together
Cowboys right now they're spending some time in Atlanta. Dak
Prescott took all of the skill position guys to Atlanta
to work out CJ.

Speaker 1 (37:22):
Stroud.

Speaker 4 (37:22):
Most of the time he takes those guys to California,
where he's from, so they can go out and work
on some things. So it is an interesting time in
this offseason. Football is just around the corner. Texas Football
is sixty five days away from their kickoff in the Horseshoe,

(37:43):
So we're gonna really dive into these training camps. We're
going to dive in to the schedule of the Texas
Longhorns as they get closer and closer, and we're gonna
find some diamonds in the rough. We've already talked about
a few guys in the college game, but we need
to start looking at some of those players that are
going to make impacts on the Texans and of course

(38:05):
the Dallas Cowboys, because it's always time to talk about
the Cowboys and the Texans right here on Sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The Zone.

Speaker 1 (38:14):
Coming up in the next hour.

Speaker 4 (38:16):
Don't forget we got Mike Cabongo joining us at eight seventeen.
In our Legends of the Locker Room segment, we'll ask
him about the NBA Draft, but he's got some news
for us. But coming up next, I pose this question
and it'll be posted on our social media. On AM
thirteen hundred The Zone. Is Robert Kraft becoming Jerry Jones.

(38:38):
I'll explain why here in just a minute. Right here
on the morning kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
The Zone. Welcome back to our number two of the
more They kick off right here on Sports Radio AM.

Speaker 1 (38:49):
Thirteen hundred The Zone.

Speaker 4 (38:51):
Mike Harballhard's World's Strongest Men in WWE Hall of Fame.
The Mark Henry tearing up stuff over there, making all
comes of line.

Speaker 1 (38:58):
But uh.

Speaker 4 (39:00):
In our number one, we talked about the NBA Draft
and how Cooper Flagg was the number one pick Texas Longhorn.
Former Texas Longhorn Trey Johnson went number six. We also
understood that Sark stood own business when it comes to
talking about his football team, and Eric Henry of Horns
twenty four seven talked all things Texas Longhorns and c J.

(39:22):
Stroud's season last year was not as bad as initially thought.
But I wanted to get into this because Robert Kraft
spoke to the media not too long ago. Now please
listen to what he's about to say, and I want
to pose the question. After you hear this, I want

(39:42):
to pose the question of is Robert Kraft worried about
his legacy after not having Tom and not having Bill
and now it's just on him.

Speaker 14 (39:55):
Please tell Patriot fans some of your expectations for your
new head coaching the team he's assembling right now.

Speaker 9 (40:04):
Well, any Patriot fans that are out there, I can
tell you I'm very excited about this upcoming season. The
last two years were the worst years of my thirty
one years of ownership.

Speaker 5 (40:20):
We had to change that.

Speaker 9 (40:23):
We have a new coach and Mike Vrabel, who is
really connected with the players, who's doing great work. We
have a young quarterback and a lot of great veterans,
free agent veterans who came in a great draft class.
We're gonna have fun this year, I promise.

Speaker 14 (40:43):
And you said it was the worst two years. If
you're thirty one years of ownership.

Speaker 9 (40:47):
Thirty one years of ownership, I'm very proud. You know,
we never won a playoff. There was only one home
playoff game in thirty four years. I sat in the
stands nineteen seventy eight. Earl Campbell ran for over one
hundred yards and we lost one home playoff game. We've

(41:10):
on the team thirty one years, we had twenty seven
home playoff games and we're privileged.

Speaker 5 (41:17):
To win twenty three.

Speaker 9 (41:18):
I want that record to keep going.

Speaker 4 (41:21):
He is I'm interested to hear your take.

Speaker 1 (41:26):
Mark, I'm interested to hear your take.

Speaker 2 (41:29):
First off, Robert Kraft got a back off that Jose
Querbo when he is doing interviews like I don't know
if it was if he was drinking the dark or
if he was drinking the white, but whatever it is,
he needed to stop drinking. He had to be day
drinking to be that pick it up while doing an interview.

(41:53):
What he was saying, it really didn't apply to the
greatness of Tom Brady, and it just talked about the
future and how happy he was excited about what's going
on right now. And he should be excited because I
think that Vaybrol is going to really turn that program around,

(42:14):
franchise around, because he doesn't want to fail one. But
also he if this is not his last stop. If
he's had success rebuilding and retooling the New England Patriots
after they have lost arguably the greatest quarterback of all time,

(42:37):
then how valuable is he going to be.

Speaker 5 (42:42):
In the market for being a coach.

Speaker 2 (42:44):
If another team wants him, he might be the first
coach to get NFL player type money. You know, you
got coaches getting nine to ten million dollars, but I mean,
I'm talking about fifteen million.

Speaker 5 (42:55):
Like he you can turn.

Speaker 2 (42:57):
The Patriots around after the says that they've had, He'll
he'll be the highest speed coach in the league.

Speaker 4 (43:05):
So let me ask you this, And this is where
I'm thinking that he has gone. He's jumped the shark,
so to speak. And the reason is because when you
were winning those championships and you start to look at
who they are, and he said this thirty one years
Tom Brady took you guys to what eight nine Super Bowls,

(43:26):
and you've won six or seven championships and now Tom
Brady Bill Belichick are both gone. You hired a coach
and Jared Mayo, who was your former player, and you
fired him after one season.

Speaker 1 (43:45):
You didn't like the direction, you didn't see it.

Speaker 4 (43:47):
And I've heard people say, well, they tried to carbon
copy by bringing in one of Bill Belichick's disciples, And
I'm like, what do you think vrabel Is Rabel played
for the New England Patriots. He is a Belichick disciple,
But now is it more of the fact that you

(44:08):
needed to bring in a different voice just because.

Speaker 5 (44:13):
No, I don't think that's the case.

Speaker 2 (44:14):
I think the case is Mayo was was beyond his
skis getting that job, and they realized that that you
needed somebody that was detailed and buttoned up and had
been there and done that. And the level of competitiveness
that very Well has is also going to make him

(44:36):
a better coach than they've seen in their previous stints
because since Belichick left, like, you'll see this year and
I don't even like it.

Speaker 5 (44:49):
I hate to say it. I feel like I need
to go wash my mouth out from what I'm about.

Speaker 2 (44:53):
To say, but you're gonna see a Patriots team that's
gonna win more than ten games. And and that's such
because I don't like the Patriots, but they're going to
be a good team.

Speaker 12 (45:07):
Wow.

Speaker 4 (45:08):
I just look at it, and I'm like, Okay, this
legacy in which that they have created in their dynasty years, right,
this was a team that if there was a playoff
game being played, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick were the
topic of discussion. Robert Kraft is searching back for that
It almost sounds a lot like Jerry Jones, and that

(45:33):
is why I am curious to is he in a
desperation type of moment? Is he a guy Robert Kraft.
He's had success in his career. I'm not taking anything
away from that. But now he's at the point after
disappointing seasons back to back even.

Speaker 1 (45:51):
Bills last year. They weren't very good.

Speaker 4 (45:54):
The decisions that were being made were not good decisions. No,
now he's in a spot of I am addicted to winning.
I am addicted to the success of an organization that
is so important to me that now I'm I'm I
don't want to say desperate, because they do have an

(46:17):
up and coming quarterback. I think Drake May is going
to be perfect for what they're trying to do. Vrabel is.
He will get on you, he will make sure that
you're doing things the right way, and he will be
that guy. But if you look at Stefan Diggs, is
he the answer at wide receiver. Yes, he's put up
great numbers, but is he going to be a distraction?

(46:39):
Not something that the Patriot aay was never about. Then
you look at Mac Collins. Mac Collins is the wide
receiver that is coming in. Yes, you brought him in
as an experienced wide receiver, but is he a true
number one? Dude walks in barefoot everywhere thirty degrees outside.
And then you start to look at that offensive line.
You've done some different things as you drafted the guy

(47:01):
from LSU that people were talking about got short arms,
and now he's your left tackle. You have different pieces
that are there. Your tight end is uh Hunter Henry,
your running back is Remandre Stevenson. But how much how
much better is he going to be than where he
was before? But you did draft Trevion Henderson. I just

(47:23):
think there's more questions than answers with this new England
Patriot football team.

Speaker 2 (47:29):
I don't think that, you know, the the weirdness and
quirkiness of players are going to have any effect on
what the.

Speaker 5 (47:38):
Game is going to be.

Speaker 2 (47:39):
In this totality, Matt Hollins is a good player. And
regardless of whether or not.

Speaker 1 (47:45):
He's like the right what I'm saying, he's not a
great player like he's he's not he's.

Speaker 2 (47:50):
Not great, but he's good enough in that system. Uh
And and that's the thing. The thing that that they
didn't have last year is a system of winning. They
may have had some good players. I thought that Mayo
played good, but he didn't play great. And that's what

(48:10):
they're driving for. They want great, but he needed a
system in order to have great.

Speaker 4 (48:16):
But it's also, as my man Ike said, you know,
they called a genie in a bottle. They drafted Brady
in the sixth round. I mean, you know what I'm saying,
Like you you you got lucky with that and his
work ethic put him through the top.

Speaker 1 (48:32):
You don't always get that.

Speaker 4 (48:34):
You know how hard it is to be able to
win at a consistent level at the NFL.

Speaker 2 (48:39):
I mean, well, Tom Brady also in college ran a
five seven forty. He ran he ran a five to
two forty when he was forty years old. So that
means that Tom Brady was eating ho hose and ding
dongs and not working out.

Speaker 1 (49:00):
He was not training well.

Speaker 5 (49:02):
He was.

Speaker 1 (49:03):
He was a quarterback at Michigan.

Speaker 2 (49:05):
He was a good quarterback at Michigan. I mean that's
what that's it. Above average good quarterback.

Speaker 4 (49:10):
Every time he played, he won at Michigan. So let's
not they were trying to push Drew Hinson on the
quarterback position at at at just like they were doing
it here at the University of Texas. They were trying
to force a quarterback on us that needed to wait
his time. They wanted Drew Hinton to be the starting quarterback.
Tom Brady was the better quarterback in college period.

Speaker 5 (49:31):
He was a better quarterback, but he wasn't a better athlete.

Speaker 1 (49:34):
Yeah, he wasn't.

Speaker 5 (49:35):
He didn't have the better work ethic.

Speaker 2 (49:38):
And he developed over the time realizing, oh wow, I
got an opportunity to do something with my life, and
I'm going to take advantage of that opportunity.

Speaker 5 (49:48):
And he did.

Speaker 2 (49:49):
Most people don't do that, And that's lightning in the bottle,
the fact that you have all the tools to be
great and you choose not to.

Speaker 5 (49:59):
He chose to would be great.

Speaker 1 (50:01):
Speaking of Ike, uh, he likes to put a little
wager on you, uh for charity with your patriots. Ten
wins been.

Speaker 5 (50:11):
Til I that I got him.

Speaker 2 (50:13):
I'll do an appearance uh and his uh, whatever charity is,
I'll go and speak and and and in the case
he gets to pay my uh my speaking engagement fee.

Speaker 1 (50:26):
Oh hey, I think it's a little bit more than
one hundred dollars that Ike is talking about. Doctor.

Speaker 5 (50:31):
Yeah, I don't do hundred dollars.

Speaker 1 (50:37):
I should have known as soon as I say that.
That's why I wasn't going there.

Speaker 5 (50:40):
Mark, you talk, answer man.

Speaker 4 (50:44):
You ain't gotta tell everything that's on the on the
on the text line. When we come back, we'll have
our Legends of the Locker Room segment.

Speaker 1 (50:51):
We'll be joined by Mike Cabongo.

Speaker 4 (50:53):
Former Texas Longhorn point guard and now the head coach
of Austin's own explain right here on the morning kickoff
on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred the zone.

Speaker 5 (51:14):
Let's let's just set the locker pay. Let's just sit,
just go with and we take it to put this region.
Let's just set the locker PA.

Speaker 1 (51:25):
Let's just set the I'm on the head and you
know that people sing, Let's just.

Speaker 5 (51:30):
Set the locker pay.

Speaker 2 (51:31):
Let's just say we just go alive and we take
it to put.

Speaker 5 (51:35):
Just begin, Let's just set the locker pay.

Speaker 1 (51:37):
Let's just let's I'm on the gad and you know
the gad the truth.

Speaker 5 (51:42):
Mark Henry and Mike.

Speaker 4 (51:43):
Hart, welcome back to a special segment of the Legends
at the Locker Road. We go way back in the
crates when we try to figure out what's next and
what is next? As we're being joined by lifetime Longhorn
Mike Cabongo, one of the coldest, fastest dudes with the
basketball at the point guard position during his time at

(52:06):
the University of Texas and now he's making the major moves.

Speaker 1 (52:11):
Good morning, mister Kebongo. How you doing, bro?

Speaker 12 (52:15):
Good morning brother?

Speaker 1 (52:16):
Every morning.

Speaker 12 (52:16):
I'm great, I'm great. Thank you for having me on
the show Man.

Speaker 2 (52:19):
It's been a while. It's been a while.

Speaker 12 (52:21):
It's great to hear your voice. I mean, I missed
Longhorn Nation. By the way, I hope everyone this yearing
knows that I've missed you guys all. And I can't
wait to actually get back on campus to the forty
acres and you know, get back and mingle with some
of my fellow peers and of course, uh the great
basketball program that we've I've been I've been a part of,
you know what I mean, no.

Speaker 1 (52:40):
Doubt, Mike.

Speaker 2 (52:41):
I gotta ask you a question, Mike, you still you
still got that hissy crossover duggle going left.

Speaker 12 (52:48):
It never leaves, It never leaves, you know, never leaves.

Speaker 5 (52:53):
You know, Hey, man, I love that that was one.

Speaker 12 (52:56):
Yeah, you know, it's crazy though I don't train no
more now, you know, I'm retired and I'm a coach now.
I had a great year after I've learned from the
Utah Jazz and being over there with their with their
team and organization, and on top of that, it's just
some part of the Canadian basketball team of pool of
coaches and learning there. So for me, it's like giving

(53:17):
back those type of moves for the players now that
we have and you see the success that Canadian players
have had. Of course, you know, I have to shed
light upon that scene of basketball and the NBA Finals
with Shay doing what he did. And that's all I'm
trying to bring back to Texas is the fact that
we can have people more people come from Canada there
follow some of my you know steps and Tristan steps

(53:37):
and Corey steps and the ones that have came before,
Marcus Carr, you know, guys that have came after and
continued that pipeline of Canadians coming to Texas and have
instellar careers.

Speaker 1 (53:46):
Yeah, we're excited about that, but you got some things
that you.

Speaker 4 (53:49):
Are are doing now and now you have been named
the head coach of Austin's own And for those that
don't understand what this league is and what it's all about.

Speaker 1 (54:02):
Why don't you raise the curtain a little bit and
let people know what Austin's Own really is.

Speaker 12 (54:09):
Right, So, Austin's Own is a TVT tournament. It's a
million dollar tournament that's come out every summer now that
a couple guys have gotten involved with. Now, there's a
lot of universities that have alma maters and to have
the former players that have played, guys that are still
currently playing professional basketball that compete throughout the duration of
the summer. So it's quite unique. It's not like the

(54:31):
three hundred and sixty five days that we see with basketball.
It's unique because you get a group for about ten
days guys probably have never played with each other and
they have to try and figure out ways to win,
to get to August and play with each other and
try and jail. So for us, we have a couple
of our former longhorners that are going to be playing,
you know, Jordan Hamilton's one of them, to Covid Brown's

(54:51):
another one of them. Guys that have been overseas having
stellar careers, and this also gives an opportunity for our
Texas fans to kind of know what our other players
are doing and after they've left. I know we shed
a lot of light on guys that are in the NBA,
of course, as we should, but I think we have
so much more talent that have come through our university
that may have not touched up the NBA plateau, but
I've still had stell a career. So this is also

(55:12):
an opportunity for our former players to come back and
for you know, people that still have engagement with our fans,
still have engagement with our players, and keep the brotherhood
connected and keep the brotherhood intact.

Speaker 2 (55:24):
My couple of questions, you, this is the same league
that Reggie Freeman coaches in in Houston.

Speaker 12 (55:29):
Yeah, pardon, yeah, this is not a league. Yeah yeah,
so when Reggie Freelam was here, Yeah, it's the same thing.
But it's like, yeah, our location will be a little
different this year. We're playing in Wichita, and the approach
a little different.

Speaker 1 (55:48):
For me.

Speaker 12 (55:48):
It's just obviously, when I get a chance to be
a head coach, there's certain things that I think I value,
and I value structure, and I value hard earned what work.
You got to work hard for everything that you get
at and I think that's what Texas tradition is. You know,
it's effort, it's working hard. We've never been out class
and never been out work, and I think that's kind
of what I represent. I represent that Texas flesh. I

(56:09):
represent that Texas mode, and that's what I'm just trying
to bring back. You know, it's just bring back the brotherhood.
And I've won it twice. I've been grateful to win
it twice as a player before. You know, now, other
teams are stacked up. You know, we have DJ Barnes
that we're going to play against our first round game
against Team Als. So again, it's not an easy fate.
But I think that I think with the group that

(56:29):
we have, with the coaching staff that we have Vince Hugh,
who's a former manager with our basketball team men's team,
who's a fun founder of this thing and has gathered
all of us to get back together. You know, it's
only right that we have a good outing and you know,
have fans come support us. We're going to have an
open practice once we get out there. July thirteenth to
the seventeenth is our training camp will be around in Austin,

(56:50):
and we'd love to get the support from our fans.

Speaker 5 (56:53):
Mike.

Speaker 2 (56:53):
Also, you talked about your Canadian pride. A lot of
people may not know that you're from the Congolese. I'm
proud of you of the efforts and the success that
the Pro Africa and the African Developmental System.

Speaker 5 (57:13):
UH is in in basketball.

Speaker 12 (57:18):
What's great about it is just the raw talent. Just
think about it. Me right, I'm born there. I had
to come over here, you know, for a better life.
Of course, you know, the war torn nations and over
there in Africa that are going through so much, so
much divide, so much corruption, things that are honestly out
of my power that I wish I could change. But
what's beautiful about it the game of basketball is you know,
we're we're getting these athletes from there that have little

(57:39):
to nothing. You know, these guys come from situations where
you know, mom and dad probably got killed and they
got lived with their grandmother. There's just tough, tough situations
that you know, some of our our problems cannot even match.
So for me, it's just trying to you know, continue
to build the game there. You know, I go back
and I do camps as well in Congo. You know,
I still touch my people because I know the importance

(58:00):
of that. Once they see, you know, and you got
to teach as much as you can, you go out
there and then hopefully they learn enough to more people
want to come back, you know, more people want to
open gyms and to open things that could help them
to propel their games, to try and develop them as well,
you know, because they're hard workers to know. They're to
see what Pascal Piatkams just did it in his final

(58:22):
the finals run. Someone from Cameroon, you know, with little
to no structure, Joel Embiid, you know, another guy that
became an MVP. So there's so many situations about that
continent of Africa where if they do get the development.
I know Massai is doing some work with Basketball without
Borders in Africa, you know, the general manager over there
with the Raptors. So there's a lot of good things

(58:42):
that are happening over there. We just got to keep
trying to develop and keep pouring into Africa.

Speaker 4 (58:46):
We're talking to lifetime Longhorn, Mike Cabongo as he's now
the head coach of Austin's own basically running that throwback
league with a chance to win a million dollars. And
you mentioned vinceh just a little while ago and what
he's his effort and what he's been able to do
with this organization. I mean, you can't do it by yourself.

(59:07):
You've got to be able to have some sponsors, but
you also got to be able to have a guy
that recognizes the talent and is able to put that
together to make it worth everybody's wile. So talk about
what Vince has been able to do to bring those
guys together.

Speaker 12 (59:21):
Yeah, it's been a very interesting couple of months. I
mean we've collaborated in the few in the past. You know,
I was supposed to playing this, but obviously with my
commitments with other stuff with my national teams in the past,
I haven't been able to give my summer to him
to playing this thing when out you know, later on
in my career. But what he's done is just seriously,
just got the sponsors, got the people that back in

(59:43):
to get behind his countless hours, Me and him, you know,
sending each other players and where they you know, fit
the system that we're trying to build. Because we don't
have all ut guys, right, some of our guys have
permitted other places, so we're going to have to sign
other people from other places as well. So we've had
to do intel and get some interviews, and you know,
we've got great guys that are going to suit up
for us and that are going to give that Texas

(01:00:04):
effort that we expect, you know what I'm saying. So
I'm just happy that then you know, figured out ways
to one get players that are former Longhorns and then
two getting guys that would would have wanted to be
Longhorns because we're rich, you know, program, and a lot
of people wanted to get involved with us or come here,
but they couldn't have probably didn't get recruited or overlooked.
But now they get a chance to be around their facility,

(01:00:26):
to be around you know, our program and our university.
So it's kind of unique. How we're going to bring
this tie this into the summertime and hopefully in the future,
is that, you know, as wins come along with this
group and this team and this summer deal, more and
more of Longhorns and our former basketball players want to
come back.

Speaker 1 (01:00:43):
Mark, you got one more question.

Speaker 2 (01:00:44):
Vince is a good friend of mine. I always have
to take stuff back to food have you been over
there to sushi Hanna.

Speaker 12 (01:00:52):
Sushi Hanah.

Speaker 1 (01:00:54):
Yeah, that is that.

Speaker 12 (01:00:59):
I'm not Oh yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
yeah yeah. What about the restaurant? Sorry you up?

Speaker 1 (01:01:04):
Yeah, he's asked if if you had spent some time
over there, because you have you been to eat for sure?

Speaker 12 (01:01:10):
Oh yes, oh for sure, for sure. Oh the lobster
goes crazy. I said, the rice whenever you have to
right wrong, yeah, you can never, you can never go
wrong with that. And of course, you know, the whole
huge family is a big, big reason why we're doing
this as well. And their restaurant's amazing out in San Antonio.
For those of y'all who have not tried that out yet,

(01:01:32):
you could take that drive from Austin, Tonia out route.
You know, it's a beautiful summit in the summertime. Take
take take someone out, take someone out of the date.
You gon eat good in San Antonio. And I think
they just got a good young player too, so their
basketball looking good over there in San Antonio as well.
So heck yeah, man, making a trip, no doubt.

Speaker 1 (01:01:49):
No doubt.

Speaker 4 (01:01:50):
As always, man, we appreciate you. We'll have you back
on again as we get closer and closer to the
games because it's about.

Speaker 1 (01:01:57):
To start right here, we'll talk about them.

Speaker 12 (01:01:59):
Man, Thank you so much, man, thank you Mark man anytime,
and thank you guys for having me and like I
always took him more.

Speaker 4 (01:02:04):
There you go, my man, Michael Bongo making this thing happen.
For the show coming up next, We've got the world's
strongest man bringing you his world's strongest take right here
on the morning kickoff on sports Radio and thirteen hundred
the Zona.

Speaker 1 (01:02:18):
That's what he does.

Speaker 4 (01:02:20):
He brings the heat, and he's bringing the heat all
the way from the Bahamas.

Speaker 1 (01:02:25):
Here's my guy, the.

Speaker 4 (01:02:26):
World's strongest man in WWE Hall of Famer Deep Mark
Henry bringing you his world's strongest take. Take it away,
big fellow, Take it away, big fellow. He then froze
up on his.

Speaker 12 (01:02:48):
There.

Speaker 1 (01:02:48):
Now we got you all right, hard what's up?

Speaker 2 (01:02:55):
You know what time in there?

Speaker 1 (01:02:56):
What time is it?

Speaker 2 (01:02:59):
Time for the world's strongest take by the world's strongest
man Bostens.

Speaker 5 (01:03:07):
Back then they didn't know. Man, Now I'm hot.

Speaker 1 (01:03:10):
They all on.

Speaker 5 (01:03:12):
Guys.

Speaker 2 (01:03:14):
My take is who won the draft And we talked
about it a little bit earlier.

Speaker 5 (01:03:20):
But let's dig in.

Speaker 2 (01:03:22):
Let's dig off, Let's dig both feet in and take
off with it. Of course, Dallas did really well drafting
Cooper Flag that was a no brainer. But the teams
that won or the San Antonio Spurs drafting Dylan Harper
and Carter Bryan.

Speaker 5 (01:03:43):
The upside for Carter Brian is really hot.

Speaker 2 (01:03:47):
He's basically a shorter winding Yama that plays more inside
than outside. Defensive capabilities are really really high. The dude's
a man. He can shoot the ball from three. But
the thing about him is he's got great instincts. The
second team that won was the Brooklyn Nets. They had

(01:04:11):
four picks to get it done. They had to get
at least two or three of them.

Speaker 1 (01:04:16):
Right.

Speaker 2 (01:04:17):
Igor Dimmlin is gonna be a star in the NBA.
Watched my words. I tried to tell y'all yesterday that
the Boston Celtics were gonna blow.

Speaker 5 (01:04:27):
It up, and y'all pooh poohed me. Yeah, I said it,
I told you.

Speaker 1 (01:04:33):
What did I tell you? Didn't I tell you? Cause
I told you? And when did I tell you a
long time ago? And what did I say? What happened?
When I told you exactly what just happened?

Speaker 2 (01:04:46):
Well that Ben.

Speaker 5 (01:04:47):
Said I'm tired of being right.

Speaker 2 (01:04:52):
Time. But the next player on that they drafted was
being surrouved. The guy can put the ball all in
the basket, y'all. He from Israel, got crazy handles, not
quite Kyrie handled, but.

Speaker 1 (01:05:07):
This is really really good. He may have the best.

Speaker 2 (01:05:11):
And and Danny Wolf from from Michigan, the dude that's
center may have the best handles that I've seen since Joker.
And you see how a seven foot guy can really
handle the ball and go up and down the court.
That's who Wolf is. And not to mention, they drafted

(01:05:31):
Nolan Torey.

Speaker 1 (01:05:32):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (01:05:32):
He's a good score, but he's on the smaller side.
I don't know how he's gonna fit in. And Drake Powell, Uh,
he got drafted twenty second, but they they they traded
him to the Atlanta Hawks.

Speaker 5 (01:05:54):
I don't know I was Washington Wizards or not.

Speaker 2 (01:05:58):
But but but the Wizards because they got Trey Johnson,
but they drafted Walker Clayton Jr. And they traded him
to the Jazz guys. Walker Trake Clayton Jr. Reminds me
of Jalen Brunson. He's a clutch shooter. He bodies everybody
he played. He's the sole reason that when we was

(01:06:22):
watching the NCAA Championship of Final four.

Speaker 5 (01:06:27):
That Florida had all the success that they had.

Speaker 2 (01:06:31):
So that being said, I would have to say that
Washington that the Jazz moves above them because Ace Bailey
now with Clayton Walker, Clayton.

Speaker 5 (01:06:45):
Puts them in a nice, nice spot.

Speaker 4 (01:06:48):
Hart, What say you, well, I still believe that the
winner in this draft might be the San Antonio Spurs.
I think the Spurs is what they've been able to
get with uh Harper and Bryant, I think is going
to put them over the top. Now to your point,
you got to figure out what you're going to do
with all those guards. There may be some changes that

(01:07:09):
may be happening. I'm not sure, But being able to
see the trajectory of what these teams are trying to do,
I'm still confused on a couple of the things, Like
you brought it up earlier in the day. You talked
a little bit about what was happening with the Sons

(01:07:30):
and what they were able to do, Like what exactly
is the.

Speaker 1 (01:07:34):
Sun's game plan?

Speaker 4 (01:07:35):
They have changed their game plan up so much that
they got a lot of shooting guards and they got
a lot of ciners, and like.

Speaker 1 (01:07:43):
Who's going to be your point guard?

Speaker 4 (01:07:44):
That was the problem before they did not have a
point guard, and you tried to have Bradley, Bill, Booker
and Kevin Durant all bringing the ball up and you
have no one directing your offense. So that was something
that I continue to look at and say, why would.

Speaker 2 (01:08:00):
When the Sons get Briant I mean not Briant Walker,
clay Walker Walker, and watched he is gonna be a
star in the NBA.

Speaker 1 (01:08:12):
Well that's a funny thing.

Speaker 4 (01:08:13):
People were saying that he was a smaller guard, and
I'm like, have y'all not watched basketball? Quit thinking like
every team when you get to the championship and you
play in the SEC, you're playing against pros.

Speaker 1 (01:08:27):
There was a lot of pros that were drafted.

Speaker 4 (01:08:30):
Duke won the draft because they had the three guys
drafted in the top ten.

Speaker 1 (01:08:34):
There's no doubting what Duke was able to become.

Speaker 4 (01:08:37):
But you also look at what happens in the NCAA
tournament and the ability to score buckets, just like that
young man was able to do. Clayton was clutch. He
was a big time player. They gave him the rock
and he showed out. So to me, I still don't
understand why.

Speaker 5 (01:08:55):
People I don't understand it.

Speaker 1 (01:08:56):
I don't know why people always talk about, oh, well
he's too small. Look at the buckets that he's getting.

Speaker 2 (01:09:02):
That dude, everybody's not gonna be igor demmlin. Yeah, you
don't have six nine guards just running around. No, right, No,
Clayton Walker is gonna be a star in the NBA.
You watch what I'm.

Speaker 1 (01:09:15):
Saying, because guess what, I'm always right there. Hall of Famer,
strongest man, the Mark Henry with the world's strongest tech.
We're gonna close out the show and send you to
Damn Patrick.

Speaker 4 (01:09:27):
We've got a lot of questions going on with the
Dallas Cowboys, Dak Prescott and is Schottenheimer a one? And
Donner well, somebody thinks so right here on the morning
kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. What
a great, great show that we had today. As always,

(01:09:48):
I can't thank everyone for listening as much as I
would love to, but thank y'all so much for sharing
the love, putting us number one on your pre set,
putting us number two on the pop, and continuing to
spread the word about the morning kickoff. Make sure you
tune in this afternoon to the Craig Way Show as
they give you a chance to win a pair of

(01:10:09):
tickets and catch you up on all things related to
the state of Texas and across those sports landscape, and
they'll give you some real life stuff too. I want
to thank Mike Cabongo for joining us today talking about
Austin's own the basketball team that he's coaching that is
going to be playing for a million dollars. That's exciting

(01:10:30):
to play for a million dollars in every year. And
shout out to our guy Vince who who is the
general manager of that team. Also shout out to Eric
Henry of Hornswint four seven as he continues to break
down everything as well. And of course I want to
thank the guy sitting across from me, Mark Henry, doing
his thing. Mark, tell everybody what you got going on

(01:10:51):
down there in the Caribbean before we get into this
one and done.

Speaker 2 (01:10:55):
Who we have our press conference today, an now s's
going on with the schedule as far as also my program,
Mark Henry Strong Kids, We're gonna be doing an activation
tomorrow at the University of Sport here, which is like
our Olympic training center, free to kids. We already have

(01:11:18):
one hundred and fifty kids signed up, So I'm excited
about getting out there with the kiddos.

Speaker 11 (01:11:25):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (01:11:25):
And we want to do this all over the Caribbean.
And our show is Saturday. This is our version of WrestleMania.
It's the biggest show that we do. We're gonna have
a thousand people. It's gonna be a lot of fun. Man.

Speaker 5 (01:11:38):
Like my confirmation.

Speaker 1 (01:11:41):
I keep looking for my confirmation for my flight and
I just still have Oh oh, you didn't get it.
I'm gonna check my spam after the show to see
what happened.

Speaker 2 (01:11:51):
Was large also is putting me on the spot, and
he knows that I invited him and his wife and me, Hey,
I can't come, man because DJ has got basketball and
we can't leave Jazzy And.

Speaker 5 (01:12:09):
I said, listen, just bring the whole fan.

Speaker 1 (01:12:11):
We can't.

Speaker 5 (01:12:12):
So it ain't o me, it's on him.

Speaker 2 (01:12:16):
That's my don't be making our listeners think that I'm
cheaping you.

Speaker 1 (01:12:22):
It's all good.

Speaker 4 (01:12:23):
Speaking of being cheap, a lot of folks think that
the Cowboys are gonna go cheap after this season and
our guy Colin Cowhert, which you can hear on these stations.
You can listen to all Texas sporting events right here
too on the AM thirteen hundred zone. But he was
talking about Schottenheimer being a one and done.

Speaker 1 (01:12:43):
Prize moves number one.

Speaker 15 (01:12:46):
This is the least surprising of any I've done in
the last two days. Brian Schottenheimer is a one and done.
Jerry will know by Thanksgiving he made a huge mistake.
Forget the fact that Philadelphia and Washington will probably both
blow them out into twice. We've got a lot of
one and done's happening now. David Cully, Steve Wilkes, Urban Meyer,
Nathaniel Hackett, Antonio Piers, Jared Mayo. People liked Antonio Pierce.

(01:13:10):
I mean he was the Raiders played a lot of
people tough, including the Chiefs. One and done happens all
the time now, and as the NFC, there was about
a three year window to make hay in the NFC
where it was kind of soft. As John's pointed out,
the coaching and the NFC are no longer soft. And
I think Dallas is going to be humiliated on a
lot of Sundays that's my first surprise.

Speaker 4 (01:13:32):
You know, I'm going to go that is so far
from the truth. Dallas Cowboys have talented players. Dallas Cowboys
have a really good football team. They've got some guys
that are energetic, They've got some guys that know how
to play the game, and they're a very experienced football team.

(01:13:53):
So for him to believe that they are going to
be embarrassed as something that I'm not gonna sit back
and just take lightly. I think that is a terrible,
terrible take. And I'm also going to make sure that
we bookmark that Marcus to revisit it later. And if
I have to come back on this station and say
he was right, I will do that. But I'm not

(01:14:16):
gonna go out there and believe that the Cowboys are
just going to go and be a terrible football team.
They've never been a terrible football team. They may have
played some bad games, but they've never been a terrible
football team.

Speaker 1 (01:14:28):
So I'm not gonna sit there and take that. In
other news, it is.

Speaker 4 (01:14:33):
Supposed to be announced that Texas State. It may come
out today that Texas State is going to be offered
a position in the Pac twelve. They are going to
vote on it on Monday, and they are going to
accept all this needs to be done by July the first,

(01:14:54):
and all signs to Texas State joining the PAC twelve.
Now my question for Texas State fans, and we've had
plenty of people come on. We've had our guy Kept
Cardello and we've had my guy Mike Craven come on
and basically have said that this is going to happen,

(01:15:19):
and it is going to happen pretty quickly. Today is Thursday.
We should hear something by today. Don't be shocked at it.
How exciting is this for the PAC twelve. How excited
is this for Texas State? It brings eyes to the
PAC twelve into the state of Texas. You've got a

program in Texas State that is trying to expand its brand.
It is changing the image of Texas State because you know,
as well as I do, we've known Texas State as

Speaker 1 (01:16:03):
The football stadium.

Speaker 4 (01:16:05):
They're doing everything that they can and if they are
able to get into a conference like that, that has
now signed a new TV deal. They are going to
make a ton of money, more money than what they're
used to bringing in at Texas State, and it's going
to continue to grow.

Speaker 1 (01:16:22):
So I'm excited for Texas State.

Speaker 4 (01:16:24):
I'm excited for the folks of Texas State, Southwest Texas
in the history, in the tradition of what they have had.
My uncle played quarterback there. One of my closest friends,
one of my Caketown brothers, played football there. It is
a great time to be in Sam Marcus, but it's
always a great time when you're tuned in to the
morning kickoff seven to nine am.

Speaker 1 (01:16:45):
Right here on Sports Radio A thirteen, one hundred desone.

Speaker 4 (01:16:49):
For all of our guests, get over to the podcast page.
Make sure you're listening to the Craig Way Show this afternoon.
For Mark Henry, for Marcus, I'm harvall harsh and just
remember this, don't believe everything you see, because even soft
looks like sugar.

Speaker 1 (01:17:02):
See y'all tomorrow, piece
