(03:17):
being a special part of our lives as we grow

Speaker 3 (03:25):
Man.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
I miss my grandmother. Feel enjoy, have a great time.
All the people out there, call your grandmothers today and
just say.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
Hey, yep, no doubt, no doubt. So happy birthday to
Mimi and Ainie. Enjoy this special special day. All right,
let's get into it. Coach Sharp had his final media
availability yesterday as this Texas Longhorn football team makes their
final preparations to go to Athens, Georgia to take on
(03:56):
the number five ranked argib Bulldogs, and here it starts
opening comments.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
Yeah, I think for us this week has been one
very focused, very intentional by the players. I think that
our guys really understand kind of where we're at in
the season that it wouldn't matter who the opponent is,
that how important this game is when you look at
the grand scheme of things, and so when they can
(04:23):
do that, then you just focus on the game and
you focus on the opponent, and then you reconnize, Okay,
this is Georgia. They're a very good football team, top
five football team in the country. They garner even more
attention that way, and so from a player's perspective and
a staff perspective, I think has been very intentional. I
think that our guys approach has been has been really good.
(04:44):
It hasn't been about the hoopla, it hasn't about last
year's games. It's been about what do we need to
do in the next five six days, starting earlier in
the week, to get ourselves in the best position to
perform against the quality football team in a tough environment.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
It's definitely going to be a tough environment going into Athens,
Georgia between the hedges, as they love to say, and
going in there and attacking the beast, which is the
Georgia Bulldogs.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
They have been the standard we've held.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
Coach Sark talk about the standard over the last few
years of college dominance that you can say ten years
for all I care. But they have been very, very good.
They've won some national championships. But the importance of creating
turnovers in these games is going to be the difference.
(05:31):
You know, whoever can take care of the football and
whoever can take it away from the opponent has a
great chance of winning this game.
Speaker 4 (05:42):
No, I think that we've got a really good core
of players that that's really innate in the way they play.
You know, Anthony Hills definitely got a nose for the football.
To Anthony Smith, Jolana McDonald, Michael taff Leonglafowl, I mean
in Colin now.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Is emerging that way.
Speaker 4 (05:58):
I mean they've got a real naw for whether it's
forcing fumbles, getting interceptions, recovering those fumbles. We always say,
the ball finds you when you play the game the
right way. And you know, we've got a nice core
of players that does that, but I think that has
spread amongst the defense and they know the value of
the ball in this game. I think the offense, you know,
on the other side, they know the value of the
(06:20):
ball as well, and so we put in a lot
of extra work on ball security drills, tackling drills to
make sure that we're prepared for that on both sides.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
Got to gotcha.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
I think one of the more important things that was said,
and it just allows few.
Speaker 3 (06:38):
Interviews of coach Sark, was.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
The fact that he said that they understand the position
that they're in and regardless of who they were playing,
the gravity of where they are, it don't matter who
you lose to. Now, it doesn't help none for Georgia
that they got to play Tech is not the other
(07:01):
way around. Texas is the one that lost the last time,
the last two times. We're not going to talk about
odds and all of that stuff. I'm talking about Texas.
It should be angry, should be chumping at the bit
to prove that they belong because if Georgia is the standard,
(07:24):
and Texas always say the standard is the standard, then
who are you trying to.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
Convince yourself or the world.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
And the only way that you're going to convince the
world is to go out there and beat them on Saturday.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
And one of the things too that can't help this
team win is the impact from not just Georgia's tight ends,
but the impact from Texas's tight ends.
Speaker 3 (07:47):
And what have you seen from them in practice this week?
Speaker 4 (07:50):
So those guess of all, in my opinion, that entire
room has progressively gotten better throughout the season, you know,
in their own ways. You know, whether it's been blocking,
run ble blocking, past blocking, you know, route running, you know,
playing with speed, being being effective in the red area.
Speaker 3 (08:07):
And so I'm proud of that entire room.
Speaker 4 (08:09):
And there's some there's some young guys in that room,
and so they've they've definitely evolved.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
You know, they're going to have a role in the game,
no question.
Speaker 4 (08:15):
They all got different parts of the game that we're
going to try to feature and get them involved in.
But you never know, you know, every game takes on
a life and a shape of its own, and and
we'll see, you know, how involved they get, We'll see
how the game goes.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
Yeah, you know what he's like, I'm not giving away
my game plan to let you out know exactly what's
going on. But while they have to do that, they
are doing some things a little bit different where they
are trying to implement the tight ends and the running backs. Obviously,
one of the other parts of this is what makes
Georgia such a tough team to knock off, and and
(08:49):
it's it's been a journey for sure.
Speaker 4 (08:52):
I think it's all of it, you know. I think
that they've got a culture in place. They've won a
lot of games for a long time, and they've won
a lot of games where they've come back. And I
think one thing that happens is, you know, when you
come back in a game at Tennessee when you're dead
and gone and you come back and win in overtime,
When you come back in a game against Old miss
(09:14):
when you couldn't stop them and then you find a
way to get a couple stops in the fourth quarter,
When you come back in a game against Alabama even
though they didn't win, it's like they believe that they
can come back. And I think sometimes you have to
get in those positions to find out if that's truly
who we are no different than us.
Speaker 3 (09:32):
I think we needed to that.
Speaker 4 (09:34):
We needed that Mississippi State game to come back and
win so that we can instill that belief in us too. Now,
I think we fought hard all year. We came back
in Ohio State had the ball at the end. We
fought hard at Florida, came back, we had the ball
at the end. But when you finally get over the
hump one time, that instills belief in everybody in the organization.
And I think Georgia believes that it doesn't matter what
(09:56):
the score is or how much times left on the clock.
They got a chance and they're not going to go away.
And again, I think that's credit to a lot of
people in the organization, and year in and year out,
you know, recreating that I think is vitally important as well,
and they've created that this.
Speaker 3 (10:10):
Season, no doubt about it.
Speaker 1 (10:12):
Being able to create those types of moments and understanding
who Georgia is is something that they've worked for and
that's where Texas is trying to build this program back
to that. But one of the things that one of
the players that we expect to do some big things
will be Colin Simmons. And what has his impact been
(10:33):
even without the stat sheets for the sacks, Well.
Speaker 4 (10:36):
I think that's what we had to do with him
earlier in the year. You know, I think he was
in such search of getting sacks that he wasn't playing
his best football early and I think that he made a.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
Change.
Speaker 4 (10:50):
And I would really say in the Florida game, he
stopped the run against Florida. You know, he was an
impactful run defender in that game. And when you just
start playing being the best player that you can be,
next thing, you know, now the sack numbers start to
grow and they start to happen for you. And so
it's being the best player that you can be and
you don't have to chase sacks. The sacks will find
(11:11):
you right if you just keep doing and playing the
way you're supposed to play. And it's credit to calling.
I think he's playing at a very high level right now.
And it's not just sacking the quarterback. He's stopping the
run very well. He's playing with fantastic effort.
Speaker 3 (11:25):
He's creating opportunities for.
Speaker 4 (11:27):
Other players because of the relentless effort that he is
playing with right now, and so really credit to him.
Speaker 3 (11:34):
I think he's playing at a very high level.
Speaker 1 (11:36):
That's good for Colin Simmons, and that's going to be
a guy that we're going to continue to talk about.
Speaker 3 (11:41):
In the next segment.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
We're also going to hear from Coach sark as he
talks about the way that the schedules are being constructed
and there's some things that need to be taken care of,
because if you look at some of these other schedules
for other teams in the SEC, they're not as heavy
on the back end as Coach sark Is is looking at.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
We're just getting started on.
Speaker 1 (12:02):
A feel good football Friday edition of The Morning Kickoff,
and we'll continue it right here on the Morning Kickoff
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back
to the Morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone. We've got a busy, busy day
today on the Morning Kickoff as we get into this
(12:26):
Georgia and University of Texas matchup. But if you're going
to be making your plans to come and hang out
with the guys for the pregame show, all the action
starts at two thirty two thirty, you can be listening
to AM thirteen hundred The Zone as the Third and
Longhorn Crew get you ready for the pregame with Cam Parker,
(12:48):
Mark Henry and special guest guess who. Rod b Baby
the football savant Rod Babers will be stepping in for me.
I will not be there, but they will be at
Bolden A in South Austin.
Speaker 3 (13:02):
Make sure you make your plans to be over there.
Speaker 1 (13:05):
They will go from three thirty to five thirty and
then it will be turned over to network coverage with Craigway.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
Roger Nope, Nope, it won't be Roger.
Speaker 1 (13:15):
It will be Craig Way, the voice of the Texas
Longhorns and Longhorned legend. Keith Morland will be on the
call along with Will Matthews. Roger Wallace will be on
the call for Texas basketball, which tips off at twelve o'clock.
But no matter what, you got you covered right here
on Sports Radio Am thirteen hundred the Zone. When we
(13:39):
went to break, we were having a conversation about scheduling
and Coach Sart yesterday talked about the scheduling and what
he was bringing up during this time is you think
about the football season and where it is at this point.
A lot of folks didn't realize that Texas had two bys.
They had one, right before they kicked off the SEC slate.
Speaker 3 (14:04):
And now they have one going in.
Speaker 1 (14:06):
They had one right before going into this Georgia game.
But the schedule is set up that you're playing the
excuse me, you happen to be playing the number five
team in the nation. You have Arkansas, which is a
rivalry game, and then you will finish off the season
at the current number three ranked team, the Texas A
and M fight.
Speaker 3 (14:27):
Naggi's here at home.
Speaker 1 (14:29):
So coach Sark was asked about the way that the
schedule is structured and he gave his thoughts on possibly
changing the way the schedule is structured.
Speaker 3 (14:40):
I am not comfortable.
Speaker 4 (14:42):
I don't think there's enough continuity from a scheduling standpoint
in the SEC. And I understand with us being new
to the conference and how schedules get set earlier, you know,
years in advance, but I just think there's some distinct
advantages that people have where they spread out their non
conference games throughout the season and they play non conference games,
(15:06):
you know, the second last game of the season, and
we're playing all of ours in the front end. They're
playing conference games earlier in the year when they're teams
one hundred percent healthy, and so I don't love our schedule,
but it's our schedule, you know, And so I do
love it in the same breath because it is what
it is.
Speaker 3 (15:21):
You play the schedule, you play the hand Drew delt.
Speaker 4 (15:24):
But I just don't think there's a lot of parody
from a scheduling standpoint of who's getting non conference games when,
and who's getting what level of non conference opponents because
of the impact that it has down the road when
you start talking about the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (15:39):
Yeah, it's a little bit interesting when you start to
look at some of these teams and their scheduling. You
can look at what Georgia has to end the season.
They'll get a chance to play Charlotte, Charlotte's not a
very good football team. After they play the University of Texas,
then they finish against a tough rivalry matchup again it's
(16:00):
Georgia Tech. But you look at how this conference is
being set up. Don't forget they're going from eight conference
games to now nine next year and you're still playing
twelve games, So there won't be very many layups or
cupcakes in that schedule.
Speaker 3 (16:17):
For the University of Texas, they.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
Need a flip flop last year, and you brought up
a good point that they make these schedules years in
advanage exactly, and Texas has only been in this conference
for two seasons yep, So like they weren't factored in
three four.
Speaker 3 (16:35):
Years ago and where it would be falling now.
Speaker 1 (16:38):
So next year, Texas will take on Texas State at home,
and then they will play Ohio State at home, and
then they will play UTSA at home. So they have
those two games, but it's early and it's three games
back to back. So Texas opens the season at home.
First three games of the season at home, Texas State,
(17:00):
Ohio State, and UTSA. So that is going to be okay,
you can look at that, but are some of those
games going to be able to be moved to a
little bit later? Are you gonna be able to try
to fix certain things? But you don't know yet that
that would affect the team that you're playing too. So
both teams, the team that you switch with and the
(17:22):
team that you play well. I mean, there's a lot
of money that's tied into this, so they would be
able to do that. I mean, and both of these schools,
Texas State and UTSA are right down the road, so
they can get another game or they can get some
things scheduled. The Texas State game is not moving. I
don't think that one will. But UTSA you because it's
part of the same system ut and UTSA, So there
(17:45):
are some things that they're gonna look at. But coach
Stark said it beast is like, we got the schedule
that we have and that's the way that it's going
to be.
Speaker 3 (17:53):
So we'll see how it plays out.
Speaker 1 (17:54):
But some names that you need to pay attention to
for the Georgia Bulldogs is running back number three Nate Fraser.
He is one of the best players on their team.
He's had an explosive run and one last week where
he went fifty nine yards against Mississippi State. You also
look at the running back Chauncey Bowens. He's carried the
(18:17):
ball eighty six times and of course the quarterback gunners
stocked him.
Speaker 3 (18:22):
You also look at the wide receivers.
Speaker 1 (18:23):
We talked about Zachariah Branch and what he has been
able to do. This is a team DJ excuse me,
Dylan Bell is number eighty six, another big time player. Defensively,
you got to look at number three CJ Allen so
the two number threes are like our six teams. You
have Michael taff In Arch Manning Well. They have two
(18:45):
number threes that are important to their well being, and
that's the running back Nate Frasier as I mentioned. And
they have a inside linebacker named CJ.
Speaker 3 (18:56):
Allen.
Speaker 1 (18:57):
They also have kJ Bolden in the secondary who is
a very very high level player. So the inside linebackers
for Georgia lead the team pretty much in tackles. One
has seventy five total tackles, the other Raylan Wilson, number five,
he has fifty four total tackles. And then kJ Bolden
(19:21):
in the secondary. He's got two PBUs in one interception,
but he also can make some tackles in the open field.
Speaker 2 (19:28):
That's what I was telling you yesterday. Like this defense
is guys that you don't see the statistics padded by
the defensive linement.
Speaker 3 (19:37):
They only have one sack by a defensive alignment.
Speaker 2 (19:40):
With those linebackers and that safety, they have multiple sacks
and they have tackles behind the line of scrimmant.
Speaker 1 (19:48):
Yep so, And I'm gonna talk about this in the
next segment. In the Hards Knox Life segment, there are
some things that Texas needs to do, and one of
those is to be very physical at the line of scrimmage.
This is something that a lot of teams, not a
lot of teams, but everyone kind of looks at as
(20:09):
the turning point in a ballgame. And if you can
can control that, that gives you a great, great chance
of dominating and winning the ball game. Now we know
this is gonna be this is a heavyweight title fight. Yeah,
this is Mike Tyson and Buster Douglas.
Speaker 3 (20:30):
These young kids ain't gonna know who those people are.
That's why I did like that. This is yeah, yeah, what.
Speaker 1 (20:40):
About uh Tyson Fury and what's the brother name that
went out there? And Deontay Wilder coming in with all
the shoulder pads and the helmet gear was way.
Speaker 3 (20:51):
Too to dehydrated on the way to.
Speaker 1 (20:53):
The ring, sweatd out his Jerry Curl on the way
to the ringing because does he wanted to put on
this mask and put on the show and man, you
needed to be like Mike Tyson, this is who Texas
needs to be. They come in with, yeah, just a
towel with a cutout through the middle and no socks.
(21:13):
And that's why he got athletes foot right now, he's
been talking about it. That dude got some fun guys. Hey,
that's how Mike isotball. This is what I'm talking about.
He got to come in Texas, has to come in
and not care.
Speaker 3 (21:28):
This ain't a beauty pageant. This has come in and fight.
Speaker 2 (21:32):
I like the fact that you said that the lines
of scrimmage is going to be the key. Yep, with
the running backs and arch Manning running the ball is
going to be the key. But make sure you get
down archive, Yeah, you better get down. We'll continue those
conversations coming up in the Hard Knocks Life. We'll also
talk baseball because the MVPs are out and we got
(21:55):
to discuss the greatness of one of the recipients. Right
on the morning kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
The Zone at eight seventeen, we will have Ann Parker
Coleman joining us of CAVU as she breaks down high
school football playoffs which are underway. There were some games
(22:16):
that were played last night and there was a special
special story about one team that is making the playoffs
for the first time that has a special special meaning
to it. Also shout out to Flugerville Conley as they
are making the playoffs for the first time. Miss Becky,
congratulations to your school. She's a loyal listener every single
(22:40):
day and she is over there helping those kids get
ready for their first playoff game in a long time.
I want to get into this keys to the game
for me with the Texas Longhorns and the Georgia Bulldogs,
a lot is going into this game because obviously coach
(23:01):
Sark mentioned it a little bit the outside noise, what's
all at stake for each of these teams in the
special moments that Texas will be sharing for this game.
But when you look at both of these teams, one
of the things that stands out to me is their
third down defense. Third down defense is going to be
(23:24):
important in this game. Texas ranks twenty third of getting
teams off the field. They get them off the field
at a thirty three percent rate. You look at what
Georgia does. Georgia, this isn't their most prolific football team,
This isn't their most star studded football team. They just
(23:46):
keep going and going and going, and they rank eighty
first in third down percentage. Texas ranks number seven in
the nation on fourth down and Georgia ranked tied for
twenty first.
Speaker 3 (24:02):
But here's the other part of this.
Speaker 1 (24:03):
You have to be able to get third downs and
convert those third downs. Georgia is one of the best
in the country at nineteen ranked number nineteen.
Speaker 3 (24:13):
In Texas not as high.
Speaker 1 (24:16):
They're right in the middle of the pack at one,
I mean at sixty six. So there's gonna be some
things that have to happen in this ballgame to help
each other out. Scoring defense, Georgia ranks twenty fourth at
nineteen point eight points per game. Texas ranks number eleven
(24:36):
at sixteen point four points per game. So this is
going to be a game that Texas and Georgia are
gonna be in a battle for. So third down defense
is going to be huge for both of these teams.
Speaker 2 (24:53):
I want to know what's different because the last three
times they played, it's all been even times. If you
go back to the drubbing that Texas gave him the
Sugar Bowl, the deep the Lions they they wore, and
they were all I mean, look think about how many
pro like guys that went to Pro Bowls.
Speaker 1 (25:15):
No, those guys are still there, They're just not as
big of names. Both teams have superstars. I'm talking about
the last two years. Their stars.
Speaker 2 (25:25):
The guys that came playing for Houston. You know, like,
what's his name, Will Anderson, he played for Alabama.
Speaker 3 (25:32):
He was Alabama guy.
Speaker 2 (25:34):
Trying to think of what Davis Jordan Davis one the
number eleven that played last year against Texas.
Speaker 3 (25:41):
Man, these guys were crazy.
Speaker 1 (25:43):
They're all playing for the Philadelphia Eagles. All those players
are playing for the Eagles. Their their their defense is
pretty much Georgia Bulldogs.
Speaker 3 (25:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (25:51):
So they've been doing some things and they recognized games.
Speaker 2 (25:55):
These defensive offensive lines are gonna clash. Is gonna be crazy,
and it's not gonna come down to them though hard.
I think secondarily that's who it falls on. Is the
is the line, and that's the only difference. But we
both on the same page because it's that it's the
guys that are gonna run, who's gonna make the name,
(26:17):
who's gonna pop the run? You know, I think that
Backster being back in full speed being able to be
a compliment. Uh, there's such a change in philosophy with
both of those runners.
Speaker 3 (26:31):
One is able to you.
Speaker 2 (26:33):
Know, catch the ball and do a lot of things
quick with it outside zone stuff, between the tackles. You
need Baxter to just say, I'm lowering my head and
it's gonna be me, are you?
Speaker 3 (26:46):
So I'm looking forward to it, man, it's gonna be great.
Speaker 1 (26:49):
As we were talking about, we're gonna make sure that
those lines of scrimmage and the fact that the defense
on both sides of the ball, both both defenses are
gonna have to come in and be locked in. But
one of the things that Coach Stark talked about and
we've seen success early is being able to emphasize the
quick game, the quick screen game, and being able to
(27:11):
get the ball up field.
Speaker 4 (27:13):
What they do one is they have really good length
across the board, you know, from their front to their
secondary to their corners, and everything starts with them disrupting
your timing, whether it's timing at the line of scrimmage
and them striking blockers, to disrupting your route combinations, getting
hands on receivers, and so it is it is vitally
(27:37):
important that we do play in sync in rhythm our run,
timing at the line of scrimmage, the timing with arch
and the receivers, and our route combinations. So I do
think that is an important factor in this game that
you know one of their main goals is disrupt your timing.
You got to try to keep your timing or make
your your timing one of the weapons that you have
(27:59):
available to you, and so you could You've got to
try to create some of that timing, whether it's with
some of your formations, some of your motions, some of
your targets.
Speaker 3 (28:07):
In the run game.
Speaker 4 (28:09):
You know that that that can serve as a benefit
for you because that is a strength of theirs for sure.
Speaker 1 (28:14):
As we watch the Texas Longhorned football team over the
last couple of weeks, has been one of my major
focuses is being able to adjust and being able to
change the way you go about getting your playmakers the ball.
When Archer is getting the ball out of his hand quickly,
it creates less less struggles for that offensive line. It
(28:37):
doesn't give them a lot of time to have to
hold their blocks. And being a now you are benefiting
your team in a greater way. As we've talked about
during this time, Coach Sark realized, I need to get
in my bag and make sure that these things are
happening consistently for my team to have success. And the
(28:58):
way he's been dialing up these last couple of weeks,
we've gotten to see the better part of what this
Texas football team originally at the beginning of the year,
what we thought we were going to see from these
young men, is now being placed in the right spot.
Speaker 3 (29:15):
The number one thing to me harder.
Speaker 2 (29:18):
They're pulling that secondary closer to the line of scrimmage,
so when they do decide to go play action, they
actually have space to make a defense pay yup.
Speaker 3 (29:28):
And Texas haven't hit a couple.
Speaker 2 (29:30):
Of those deep hitters across the middle because of the
quick game. But I think the number the second factor
other than getting the ball out quick and allowing the
playmakers to make moves, is the fact that it pulls
those safeties up closer to the line of scrimmage.
Speaker 1 (29:47):
And if they can do that, then they might be
able to pop some of those plays and get one
of those home runs that we've been waiting on. This
is a big opportunity for this Texas football team on
one of the biggest state that is out there, and
this team continues to fight. We talk about being healthy
at the right time, Texas is healthy at the right
(30:08):
time leading into this big matchup, and so I'm excited
to see what the game plan is going to look
like for the Texas Longhorns. Coming up next, we're going
to continue the conversations. Major League Baseball gave out there
MVPs and surprise, surprise, well nobody's surprised right here on
the morning kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred des all.
(30:31):
Major League Baseball continues to give out its awards as
the season has come to an end.
Speaker 3 (30:39):
Obviously, we know that.
Speaker 1 (30:40):
The LA Dodgers are the World Series champs in an epic,
epic world series, one of my favorite world series that
I've ever gotten the chance to watch. It was wild
and Willie and just really having a lot of good
times watching that game. But there were some special players
(31:01):
that were involved all season long, and for this to happen,
there's only one way and one person that could give
out these awards, and.
Speaker 3 (31:10):
That's Donnie Baseball.
Speaker 1 (31:12):
Don maddingly announced the MVP of the American League.
Speaker 5 (31:18):
American League MVP Aaron Judge.
Speaker 1 (31:34):
Aaron Judge was sitting on his couch looking like the
Rock when the Rock had his fanny pack with the
black top, I mean black shirt and the chain hanging out.
That's what Aaron Judge was doing. Aaron Judge had fifty
three home runs, batted three thirty one.
Speaker 3 (31:50):
He won the batting tire.
Speaker 1 (31:52):
He was just the third player to win a pair
of batting titles and to have at least fifty home runs,
with fifty three in the major leagues. Obviously, we were
all pulling for the big dumper, Kyle Raley, but he
ended up coming up short, and Aaron Judge is the
MVP once again.
Speaker 2 (32:14):
Aaron right now has an astisk next to that win.
Speaker 3 (32:20):
That's still ky Riley is my guy.
Speaker 2 (32:25):
And I heard a lot of the phronosticators saying that
he won't replicate this season.
Speaker 3 (32:31):
He may not be able to ever do it again,
but he did it once.
Speaker 2 (32:35):
If I believe if you do something you and you
came in first at something, you should be number one,
you should get the win.
Speaker 1 (32:41):
Well, he didn't win the batting title. He didn't win
the batting title, that's for sure. Aaron judged it and
his numbers. Well, I take a lot of pride in
the fact that you can steal back three point thirty
one and get walked one hundred times and still be
able to do the things that you're capable of doing.
Speaker 3 (32:57):
I know he's deserving.
Speaker 1 (32:59):
I'm just I'm I'm shocked. Yes, for a Yankees fan
first age six, two seventy.
Speaker 3 (33:09):
W'd be pretty big. But by.
Speaker 2 (33:14):
The reason they call him the big dumpers get a
dumpy guy.
Speaker 1 (33:18):
He looks more relatable. Yeah, that's true. He's definitely relatable.
King related with six As.
Speaker 3 (33:25):
You know, he lean got muscles. Yeah, he got muscles
on muscles.
Speaker 1 (33:30):
And speaking of muscles on muscles, another guy who just
seems to find a way to get it done is
the National League MVP.
Speaker 4 (33:39):
How it's time from all the truth, my friend give
us the National League MVP.
Speaker 5 (33:43):
Nationally m VP is show hey, Annie.
Speaker 1 (33:56):
Show Tany has voted unanimously, you unanimously for the fourth time.
Every time he has won the award, it has been.
Speaker 2 (34:06):
Unanimouser if they just look around at each other like okay,
if somebody gonna go again, who exactly exactly he this is?
Speaker 3 (34:14):
You don't want?
Speaker 1 (34:16):
He has won it four times. This is his third
time in a row. His last one is the second
one in the NL, but he also has two in
the American League.
Speaker 3 (34:27):
He has the second most second.
Speaker 1 (34:31):
Most MVPs behind Barry Bonds. Barry Bonds has seven MVPs.
Sho hal Tany has four. He's got them in both leagues.
He hit fifty five home runs and led the major
leagues last year with one hundred and forty six run score.
Speaker 3 (34:51):
Oh yeah, and he also picked. He also pitched.
Speaker 1 (34:54):
He had two point eight seven eras and they did
win the series.
Speaker 3 (35:01):
I mean, it wasn't even like he was close. He
was a landslide victimy. It wasn't even close.
Speaker 1 (35:08):
And what we have been witnessing in baseball is something
that definitely needs to be studied, because what Show Hey brings,
what Aaron Judge brings, is the fact that these guys
are so talented that we are now dismissing some of
(35:29):
the things that they're doing. You were voting, I'm voting
against your team and the best player on your team
and the best player in the American League.
Speaker 2 (35:39):
Yeah, but I really would like to see him in
the postseason be the star. That's the same thing with
Texas Georgia. I want to know who's going to be
the guy to get the scoop and score the pig six,
the big long run, the spectacular catch, the fifty five
yard field goal, like some great players step up in
(36:01):
the greatest game. Who's who's the guy, Who's the guy
on this team?
Speaker 3 (36:06):
Don't you want to be?
Speaker 1 (36:08):
Well a guy in the major leagues was show Hal
Taney and Aaron Judge.
Speaker 3 (36:13):
I'm just.
Speaker 2 (36:16):
I'm like the guys that great that he had everybody
else seem pedestrian, exactly, think crazy in the whole league,
in the whole National league.
Speaker 3 (36:26):
This guy is so much that this is between first
and second is so far that it's not right.
Speaker 2 (36:36):
If he was in the American league, he judged, they
would be in the.
Speaker 3 (36:42):
Same neighborhood they are every everywhere else.
Speaker 1 (36:47):
But the simple fact that he won it before he
left the Americans, I mean, I'm not when he went,
he went, he took the trophy with him and said,
now you may have it, you can have it back,
you can have it now, but this is you. This
is your league now. Because if it was better, he
would still win it. Exactly, he would still be winning it.
Speaker 3 (37:08):
He still win.
Speaker 1 (37:10):
But it also goes to the point of what we've
talked about before. Are we getting to the point that
we are looking at such a great player that now
we're trying to lift up others. Why not just enjoy
what we're watching.
Speaker 3 (37:29):
Why not.
Speaker 1 (37:30):
It's like Michael Jordan should have got the m v
P every single year. Lebron should have gotten the m
v P almost every single year.
Speaker 3 (37:40):
At this stage, the Joker should.
Speaker 1 (37:43):
Be getting the m v P every single year because
of the way that this young man plays. Those are
the things that we get so bored with greatness.
Speaker 2 (37:54):
We're gonna put the religious music behind this in post
those bars right there.
Speaker 3 (38:02):
You don't even realize what you.
Speaker 1 (38:03):
Were saying, because it's the truth, Mark, and the truth
shall set you from.
Speaker 3 (38:07):
The hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on.
Why are you adding work to meet? Im volunteering me
for stuff? Hey?
Speaker 2 (38:15):
Mark, is it possible to add a little spiritual music.
Speaker 3 (38:21):
I'll see what I can do. It's a feel.
Speaker 1 (38:23):
Good football Friday edition of The Morning Kickoff. Coming up next,
we will talk NFL and college football, and Parker Coleman
joins us at eight seventeen, and we'll close out the
show having a great, great week right here on the
Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred.
Speaker 3 (38:41):
That's me.
Speaker 1 (38:43):
Welcome back to our number two of the Morning Kickoff
right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred, the zone
and our number one. We talked start as he had
his final media meeting with us yesterday as they get
ready to head to Athens, Georgia. We also got my
keys to the game and where it needs to be done.
(39:04):
Quick game, quick game, quick game, and of course third
down defense. And we just talked about the MVPs in
Major League Baseball. We got Ann Parker Coleman coming up
at eight seventeen. But right now we're going to talk
college football and NFL. But before we get into that,
I wanted to bring this up because I literally was
(39:26):
talking about this in the break, about the greatness of
one show, Hey o Tani, and what we've been able
to witness since he has been in the LA Dodgers organization.
He's won two and that's only been two seasons now,
by the way, He's got eight years on his contract,
and this all happened in the first two seasons. He's
(39:46):
got two World Series rings. He's been unanimous MVP twice,
He's been the NLCS MVP. He set career highs in
home runs back to back years. He invented the fifty
to fifty club do at fifty home runs and fifty
stolen bases. He's made two All Star appearances, and he
(40:06):
has two Silver Slugger Awards, And as I mentioned, we
need to appreciate the greatness that we see every single game.
And I know Craig Way, the voice of the Texas Longhorns,
who is a huge Texas I mean a huge LA
Dodger fan. I think he would be even better to
(40:29):
explain this to you. So make sure you listen to
the Craig Way Show this afternoon starting at two o'clock,
because only Craig can break down his Dodgers and his
Rams like no other. Speaking of Rams, big weekend mark
for the La Rams. We talked a little bit about
this all week and as we get closer, by the way,
(40:49):
last night's game, the New England Patriots defeat the New
York Jets. Shocker that that was going to happen, that
they were gonna be good. How it happened was not
a shocker. Twenty seven to fourteen. The Patriots at home
wearing those grays. What did you think of those uniforms?
I thought it was bland. Looked very college to me,
like don't do it? Oh, okay, breaking up? But cup
(41:12):
I like those a little bit. Drake Mango's twenty five
thirty four to eighty one look sharp. But the running back,
the running back, Traveon Henderson had three touchdowns. We've seen
that speed before. We've seen that young man get it going.
He didn't have big numbers, but he had enough where
he had two rushing touchdowns and caught a pass in
the back of the end zone.
Speaker 2 (41:32):
And what are we gonna do with the New York Jets.
They're already doing it. Those guys played hard last night.
They did justin fields looking good and they and they
looked decent. They just made the mistakes that people would
let talent make. And I'm going to talk about that
in my World's Strongest take break down on both sides
of what we saw, and what do I think the
(41:56):
Jets are gonna do? And how do I think that
the Patriots are going to be?
Speaker 1 (42:01):
Well, there's a little preview of what Mark Henry is
going to talk about. I do want to get into
this because there is a lot of conversation that is
happening in the NFL about the Philadelphia Eagles. We had
a brief conversation about it yesterday. Mark brought up aj
Brown in what is going on. There's a lot of
criticism being thrown around this Sunday night. You got the
(42:25):
Lions at the Eagles coming in to Lincoln Financial. Feel
it will be the Philadelphia Eagles are favored at two
and a half points, but everybody's complaining. That entire squad
is complaining about the lack of offense. And I believe
that Jalen Hurts is sick and tired of being sick
(42:49):
and tired.
Speaker 6 (42:50):
So we've got the Detroit Lions, so I'm gonna definitely
put a halt to that. I think the more we
drive that more of a distraction it becomes. And I
think ultimately it's about the group.
Speaker 3 (43:02):
And so.
Speaker 6 (43:05):
Things have been what they've been, and they are and
they are where they are.
Speaker 3 (43:08):
You know, we are who we are as a team.
We're all we got and we all we need.
Speaker 6 (43:12):
And so in terms of who we have this week,
we got a really good opponent coming into town, a
team that is, if I can only imagine, as has
been waiting on the opportunity to play us, given history
and given how good they've been been, a great team,
great great organization, great coach, and great culture. And so
(43:33):
my energy, my focus is purely focused on trying to
be the best that I can be this week, trying
to lead this offense in a way that we need
to be led and be the leader I need to
be in this time.
Speaker 3 (43:48):
He says the right thing all the time.
Speaker 1 (43:50):
He's a professional when it comes to handling the nonsense
in that locker.
Speaker 3 (43:56):
Yeh.
Speaker 2 (43:57):
Being a politician though, is not always being the most
upright thing either.
Speaker 3 (44:01):
What you mean by that, I mean, I'm what I'm.
Speaker 2 (44:03):
Saying is is Jalen may say one thing, but knowing
it hard that they got to do something. If they're
going to go forward in a positive way, and in
that positive way, somebody is gonna have to go. They're
gonna have to have a big talk in the off
season with the offense coordinator and head coach about the
(44:26):
direction of the team and what identity they're gonna have
because the too push is not an identity. That's that's
an answer to a short yardage play. That and they
and they don't do well in doing it.
Speaker 3 (44:40):
See.
Speaker 2 (44:40):
The thing about that is that's the only thing you
can connect their offense with.
Speaker 3 (44:46):
No, that's that's not that's not true.
Speaker 1 (44:48):
They have playmakers on there, they have people that are
they are seven and two?
Speaker 3 (44:52):
Do they throw it or do they run it? Yes,
that's called football. That's what you're supposed to do. You're
supposed to have balance. Like I don't.
Speaker 1 (45:00):
I don't understand the the Let's go out here and
throw a three thousand times and have all these dudes
getting numbers and we lose. Are we gonna talk about that?
What is the identity? We know that once they get
short yardage they're gonna do exactly that. That that's that
should be the best deodorant. You just won the super Bowl.
(45:22):
You just won the Super Bowl. So I don't get.
Speaker 3 (45:26):
How all these put me in there with them.
Speaker 1 (45:29):
Well, well, you were trying to defend the fact of
what he said, and what he said was the truth.
Look what do you always say? Put that out your mind?
Put that out your mind. They put in your mind
that we are seven and two and we got a
chance to go and play the Detroit Lions. Who is
gonna come in? They're gonna be innovative. Our defense has
(45:49):
played great. We have not put up a bunch of points.
But what happens when they do put up a bunch
of points and your defense gives up a bunch of points.
So there's a there's a ying and a yang in
all of this. But the frustration as an individual I get.
The frustration as a team I do not get because
victory tastes better than defeat. Oh but you can always
(46:13):
do it with a bud light. Always do it with
a bud.
Speaker 3 (46:16):
Light, easy to enjoy.
Speaker 2 (46:22):
I have a lot more faith in Detroit as an
offense because I've seen what they can do and how
they do it. Last year was a different This is
a different offense completely compared to what they did last year.
And it's not just the results of it's it's the
way that they run. It's the way that they throw.
(46:45):
Like they're not stretching the field. They're doing for lack
of a better term of short game type of mentality,
and it's not working for them.
Speaker 3 (46:57):
And I know there's seven and two.
Speaker 1 (46:59):
So I was just about but I'm saying in a
different context, saying in a different context, I agree with you.
Speaker 3 (47:04):
I know you want them to stretch the field.
Speaker 1 (47:06):
They did, they made a big play and they scored
a touchdown. AJ Brown is Look, here's the deal. If
AJ Brown wants to be the number one receiver, then
he needs to go to the Carolina Panthers. He doesn't
need to go to it every play. Here you go.
(47:27):
But what are you gonna be complaining about yet? What
are you gonna be complaining about?
Speaker 3 (47:31):
Then? The fact that you're here?
Speaker 1 (47:34):
No, and the losses, losses, So you can be a superstar,
you can be the go to guy. It's like Jamar Chase.
Jamar Chase is one of the best wide receivers in
the NFL. They threw him seventeen passes the other day loss,
but he got his numbers. So where we at with this?
(47:59):
I'm just trying to figure out what we're doing here. Listen, baby,
you gotta make sure this thing is right because we
don't care about all that.
Speaker 3 (48:08):
Just run me my money, you know what.
Speaker 1 (48:10):
I also want to talk about the Houston Texans. The
Texans are in a spot where they need.
Speaker 3 (48:19):
To get a win.
Speaker 1 (48:20):
They can't let their guard down going up against the
Tennessee Titans this weekend.
Speaker 3 (48:25):
You here all the game.
Speaker 1 (48:27):
Right and you can hear the game right here on
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone and Jamiico Ryan
said his rookies, oh no longer rookies?
Speaker 3 (48:36):
What about the rookies no more rookies like Woody like,
let's go.
Speaker 7 (48:40):
Like, Woodie's done a great job, we got to continue
to feed him more. Higgins on the outside, we got
everybody sees like this guy's catch radius is insane, Like
put the ball in his vicinity, he's gonna go and
get it.
Speaker 3 (48:52):
You need a big play.
Speaker 7 (48:53):
Who shows up on fourth Now it's Jalen Knowle showing
up and we need it it most to make that play.
So these guys are are not rookies. They're making plays
in the critical times of the game, crunch time we
needed most.
Speaker 3 (49:08):
We're counting on the rookies.
Speaker 7 (49:09):
Tay Stilling a great job there left tackle, like continuing
the battle down and down out. He's getting better as
the season is going on. So yeah, the rookie, the
rookie name played is all is like, let's go and
how can we finish this season the right way you mentioned?
Speaker 3 (49:26):
So they got to get that done. Yeah, that's awesome.
I like the fact that he's single people out. Yeah,
and and they have done a good job.
Speaker 8 (49:34):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (49:35):
We we thought differently about Houston.
Speaker 2 (49:38):
It was gonna be Collins, it was gonna be Kirk like,
but it's turned into what these the rookies that they
brought in.
Speaker 3 (49:45):
That's awesome.
Speaker 1 (49:46):
Yeah, it's been a good turnaround for this football team.
When we come back, we're gonna hear from Ann Parker
Coleman as she talks high school football and the playoffs
and what is next right here on sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back to the morning kickoff
right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Speaker 3 (50:08):
It is Friday.
Speaker 1 (50:09):
It's a feel good football Friday. And what better way
to get our Friday kicked off than talking to our
good friend and Parker Coleman of CAVEU And good morning.
Glad you took the time to be on with us.
And high school football is on the front Bernard. Last
night there was a matchup that kicked off the high
(50:32):
school football playoffs and now we're rolling into Friday.
Speaker 9 (50:37):
Yeah, Dripping Springs got done against Vista Ridge.
Speaker 10 (50:40):
Our very own Jeff Jones was there and I saw
Jeff afterwards and I was like, oh, you know, Durping
Springs is looked good this year.
Speaker 9 (50:47):
How bad was the game?
Speaker 10 (50:48):
He was like, you know, they're up, not by much
and then Dripning Springs kind of turned it on the
second half.
Speaker 9 (50:54):
And put this ridge in the review.
Speaker 10 (50:55):
So I think Drip is a team that could go
pretty far, but it's just exciting to be in this
time of year. Tonight we got another really big one
West Say versus Vandergriff and for that game, Driven Springs
beat WESTAC last week. West is a three loss team,
so he'd be like, Okay, Vandergriff has got this, but
I still I don't know. WESTIK is a team that
(51:18):
I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up back in
the Steit Championship game in at and T Stadium later
in December.
Speaker 1 (51:26):
Yeah, they always find a way to get it done.
That's that, you know. You can't stop the history of
what's been going on. Speaking of history, for the first
time in a long time, the Austin Eastside High School
has now qualified for the playoffs and there's an interesting
story behind how this all came about. There was a
(51:47):
young man who tried to keep this key team together.
His name is Jaden Williams Springle. He ended up passing away,
but he is the reason why a lot of those.
Speaker 3 (52:00):
Kids didn't transfer out.
Speaker 1 (52:01):
They decided to stay and go to school to build
their opportunity to get into the playoffs.
Speaker 10 (52:08):
Yeah, it is a really unique story. Our core Mos
is working on this, on telling this right now. But
I mean you kind of summed it up. This kid
was happened to be the most popular kid in his
class and instead of going to LBJ, which he's you know,
district for, decides to go to East Side, which I mean,
football wise, just is the less popular, less successful school,
(52:31):
and he's kind of the pied piper. Everybody follows him
and it's really changed that program and even now without him,
unfortunately he's passed away. The it's it's given all these
kids like an added motivation still to play for him.
Speaker 9 (52:46):
It's it's really really special.
Speaker 10 (52:48):
I believe somewhat new No, I was going to say
somewhat new coaching, but I'm thinking of a different school.
Speaker 9 (52:55):
But overall, just a really really really special story.
Speaker 2 (52:59):
And I love stories like this where you find the
inspiration and that inspiration takes you to a championship. The
you said Corey is doing a story about this. Where
can we you know, when we can find that story.
Speaker 9 (53:18):
Yeah, we're in the early stages now.
Speaker 10 (53:20):
I don't know exactly how far along he's gotten, but
once it is up, I mean it'll be on his
Twitter page on KVU.
Speaker 9 (53:29):
But I'm not sure.
Speaker 10 (53:29):
You know, this is like two weeks ago that he
mentioned he was he was working on this, and I
knew he said was having a better of the year
than normal, but I didn't know the backstory behind all this.
Speaker 9 (53:40):
But yeah, I can I give you specifics.
Speaker 2 (53:42):
I'm actually not sure what is these sides real like chances?
Do you think that they can actually make a run
in the playoffs? So is this one of those whereas
it's just a good heartwarming story.
Speaker 9 (53:57):
I think I think a little bit of both.
Speaker 10 (53:59):
I think that even the fact that they're in playoffs
is obviously pretty historic. Can I sit here and say
I see them winning a state championship? Honestly, no, I
don't think so. But gosh, a first or a second
round playoff run like that in and of itself, I think.
Speaker 9 (54:18):
For program like that.
Speaker 3 (54:19):
Yeah, it's a great story.
Speaker 1 (54:20):
And Corey have mentioned it to me the other day too,
so he will have some more on that coming up
pretty soon. But I want to get back to college
football now and talk a little bit about the Texas Longhorns.
You did a story the other day talking about it's
the first time that they've had a clean sheet like
this where everybody is healthy, especially heading into Week ten
(54:44):
and being able to go to Georgia, a team that
they've had some hiccup hiccups against, and now they go
on the.
Speaker 3 (54:51):
Road and are ready to take on the Georgia Bulldogs.
Speaker 10 (54:55):
Yeah, I think having some hiccups against Georgia is a
really nice way putting it. I mean, Kirby Smartest had
Texas's number last year, and they're really lucky that this
game just happens becoming after bye week, when everybody's healthy,
you're gonna get you know, your leader on the defense,
Michael Tapack, Jolani McDonald will be back. You look, on
(55:17):
the offensive side of the ball, Brian Wingo has really
been turning it on and he will be back. If
you're Texas, you couldn't have asked for better timing. But
I mean, still, it's your first time playing at Georgia.
They have only lost two games in their past fifty
three games there.
Speaker 9 (55:35):
It's going to be a really tough task and Texas hasn't.
Speaker 10 (55:39):
Been super successful on the road, but we've seen them
kind of start to turn it on more recently, and
hopefully that translates on the road.
Speaker 1 (55:47):
We're talking to Anne Parker Coleman of Kview and let's
get into it. Arch Manning obviously had a big week
going into the bye week. He's back on the field,
excited to go back to Georgia, where it came down
to Texas and Georgia between the two schools in which
he chose, and obviously he chose Texas. But what do
(56:09):
we need from arch Manning to have a successful and
a victorious trip to Athens, Georgia.
Speaker 10 (56:18):
I think a clean game, clean pocket When he has that,
He's shown in this, you know, past two games.
Speaker 9 (56:26):
That he can do some pretty special stuff.
Speaker 10 (56:28):
He can make some plays, and especially against a Georgia
team that is very different from last year.
Speaker 9 (56:34):
But I mean, if we look at last year, they
had a.
Speaker 10 (56:36):
Way of getting to Quinn years at thirteen sacks combined
in those two games. So for this you really got
to keep them up right like it's it is. I'm
a little concerned about how the O line will handle this.
But also Georgia they're not the world beaters that they
were last year when it comes to getting after the quarterback.
They've only had eleven sacks this season. But I think
(56:58):
a lot of it is going to come down to that,
just is keeping Arch up right. And and again going
back to the health piece. I mean, two weeks ago
and they're playing Vanderbilt. After the Missippi c game, Like,
I did not think that Arch was going to be playing.
Speaker 9 (57:11):
He looked so banged at the me had a great game.
Speaker 10 (57:14):
You guys heard me talking about like he had a
great game.
Speaker 9 (57:18):
So he's clearly healthy.
Speaker 10 (57:19):
And now he has another week to where his pass
all the concussion protocol. We haven't even talked about that
this week. I think it does set him up pretty well.
Speaker 2 (57:27):
And MS Parkers, this is the first time you've seen
the Texas injury report zero.
Speaker 10 (57:36):
I feel like this is the first time that I've
seen any team right outside of Week one with none
to report on their injury reports.
Speaker 9 (57:45):
It's pretty impressive. I've never seen it.
Speaker 1 (57:47):
Yeah, that's one of the things too. You talked about
the importance of having Michael taff You've heard everybody talk
about his leadership. You get a Jilani McDonald back in
the back end, kind of solidifying what had some mistakes
during the last game against Vanderbilt, but shoring up that end.
(58:07):
And I think this year. Going into this matchup is
going to be a little bit different because our special
teams are playing at an all time high right now.
Speaker 10 (58:19):
Yeah, there's there's special right. I'm so curious to see
if they put to Ryan Nibley. I don't think that
you should, and I would be surprised if they do.
But also it feels like George is the kind of
team that would be like, no, we can do this
and try it. So I think that this game is
going to come down to plays like that. I think
it's going to come down to maybe a field goal.
(58:41):
But I mean going back to your point, Yeah, getting
getting Taff and John mcback, Janie Jeannie McDonald's back.
Speaker 9 (58:49):
On defense is going to be key.
Speaker 10 (58:50):
They were giving up I think two hundred and forty
three yards in their their absence, and I mean this
is a strong defense, but that is going to be
huge even when to communication and confidence, like you have
your leader back you, Michael.
Speaker 1 (59:04):
Taff back, yep, and that's that's gonna be key. Before
we let you go, because uh, I saw some news
this week. I wanted to congratulate you on your engagement.
I know that you I've seen a lot of pictures
I've seen a lot of things, uh you traveling and
going to different weddings. Now you get an opportunity to
(59:25):
have your own and plan your own wedding. So congratulations,
thank you.
Speaker 9 (59:29):
I'm just sorry for the radio listeners who can't see
the rock on my hands.
Speaker 1 (59:39):
Oh I do notice that I did notice that in
your broadcast the other night that that that hand was
moving around just enough to get that right to hit
it properly. So thank you so much, super excited, congratulations,
and we look forward to hearing more about it and
the trip to Athens and hearing about the trip and
(59:59):
how everything goes and hopefully you can bring back a victory.
Speaker 9 (01:00:03):
Hopefully. All right, guys, are you all going to happen?
Speaker 3 (01:00:06):
No, we are not going to Athens, but I did
know that you put your hand up, so I got you.
Speaker 9 (01:00:12):
Hey, don't worry, I'll cover everything for you guys, So.
Speaker 3 (01:00:15):
I appreciate that. Thank you so much, and have safe
travels there.
Speaker 1 (01:00:19):
She is Anne Parker Coleman, who will be changing her
name pretty soon, so we will see how that plays out.
Speaker 3 (01:00:25):
But coming up next, we have our guy.
Speaker 1 (01:00:27):
Mark Henry bringing you his world's strongest take right here
on the morning kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone.
Speaker 3 (01:00:35):
You heard him. That's what he do, and that's what
he does.
Speaker 1 (01:00:38):
Right now, WWE Hall of Famer and World's Strongest Men,
d Mark Henry brings you his world's strongest take.
Speaker 3 (01:00:46):
Take it away, big fella hard what something?
Speaker 8 (01:00:49):
Man?
Speaker 3 (01:00:49):
You know what time it is? What time is it?
Speaker 2 (01:00:51):
It's time for the world's strongest take by the world's
strongest man. My guess back then they didn't know me,
but now I'm hot. They're all on me. You want it,
you got it, Ladies and gentlemen, The world's Strongest Take
today is brought to you in part by Shipleys Doughnuts
(01:01:14):
Human with two ends.
Speaker 3 (01:01:18):
Guys.
Speaker 2 (01:01:18):
Last night I saw that Patriots and Jets game, and
the reason that the Patriots won that game is because
of talent. They both were well coached teams. They both
had teams that fought extremely hard. But in the NFL,
(01:01:39):
like any other sport, the cream of the crop, talent matters,
and the Patriots had more talent. They had more talent
a quarterback, they had more talent at running back, the
offensive line, and even their defense as a whole, as
it relates to them having a defensive coach that it's
(01:02:00):
a Hall of Famer future Hall of Famer, the deficiencies
at quarterback, number one wide receiver talent, having the best
wide receiver on their.
Speaker 3 (01:02:14):
Team out.
Speaker 2 (01:02:18):
Just having a defense that by and large is lacking
elite talent at the skill positions on defense, which I
would say cornerback, middle, linebacker, and having a pass rush
specialist that's not the little brother but the big brother.
(01:02:42):
All of these things paled in comparison to the fact
that they had crucial drops won by former Longhorn, which
I have no idea how he dropped the pass, but
he was amongst five drops in the game, three of
(01:03:02):
which would have been first downs and one would have
been possible touchdown.
Speaker 3 (01:03:10):
Or inside the ten.
Speaker 2 (01:03:12):
And all of that because they traded away heavy assets
to make themselves a more viable team in the next
two years, they do not have a star to build
their team around, and as far as I see, they're
gonna have to rely on the draft in the next
(01:03:33):
couple of years. My thing is is the Jets and
rebuild mode and that they will not have be a
factor for the next year to two years. But the
Patriots are going to be a Super Bowl contender. Once
they have a dominant wide receiver, Once they have a
(01:03:55):
offensive threat outside of the running back and quarterback position,
which wide receiver, tight end, they're on the way they
have they have capital too, but that defense is short
up hard.
Speaker 1 (01:04:11):
What's say you, well, the thing that I'm curious of
is what other big time wide receiver do you need
besides Stefan Diggs.
Speaker 3 (01:04:20):
Stefan Diggs is a go to playmaking wide receiver. Drake
May makes everybody around him look pretty good the way
he's been able to move. They've got a good running
game with Traveon Henderson, and I believe that they've used
him the right way because he's getting he's getting better
at what's going on. They still have the power running
(01:04:42):
game with Ramandre Stevenson, but they look to be better
when Henderson is in the game, more touches, more opportunities
down the field.
Speaker 1 (01:04:52):
I like the problem that you have a problem with
the Patriots. There's no problem with the Patriots and they're
nine to two. The thing that I am am curious about.
The thing that I'm curious about is what made the
Tennessee Titans think it was time to get off of
Mike Vrabel.
Speaker 3 (01:05:12):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:05:13):
That's why they're in the spot that they're in. You
ever heard the term can't get right? Oh, yeah, that's them.
They've made one horrible mistake after another. Yeah, I just
don't understand it, Like these are professional football people.
Speaker 3 (01:05:29):
If you look at what Mike Vrabel brings to the
table every single.
Speaker 1 (01:05:33):
Week and go back and look at his history, he's
a winner, he's a win nerve Yeah, and he went
back and found out, how can I get my team
my organization where I won championships? How can I get
this team back to that conversation, And they've done that
with some toughness. They've done that with a quarterback. You
(01:05:55):
need a quarterback. And they've done that with the power
running game. To your point about the New York Jets,
this is a total rebuild. The problem is we had
this conversation yesterday. Are they going to give Aaron Glenn
enough time to rebuild this?
Speaker 2 (01:06:15):
You think they're going to do it Tony dun I
let him go get all the groceries. And then because
two years in a row, they give them to the
hottest coach out.
Speaker 3 (01:06:26):
There, and he's going, oh this is nice. I get
all these fine toys.
Speaker 1 (01:06:31):
This is this to me, this is the blueprint of
where you need to be. And I'm talking about the Patriots.
What they've been able to do with Rabel, what they've
been able to do with getting Drake May, what they've
done in the draft the last few seasons, to where
they are right now is the blueprint for what the
(01:06:52):
New York Jets need to be able to do to
let him build it. Because you got the picks you got, uh,
you let go of Quinn Williams, you let go of
Sauce Gardener, your two prize possessions, but you.
Speaker 2 (01:07:09):
Didn't want to be strapped by having to pay them
one hundred million dollars. And now they can start, not over,
but they can start with a good They can have
a good start with.
Speaker 3 (01:07:20):
How many draft picks, three first round picks. But that's
how they built.
Speaker 1 (01:07:24):
That was how they were supposed to be building it before,
because those people that just left, they were first round
draft picks. Those were guys on your defense that you
were building, and your defense was good, but they got
really solid. They got rid of solid. They shouldn't have
got rid of solid.
Speaker 3 (01:07:37):
They should not have. But they're gonna get better because.
Speaker 2 (01:07:42):
They got rid of that big money because they weren't
winning with those guys, and it's time to do a
reset because if you're paying somebody one hundred million dollars,
you're not gonna be able to afford hardly anybody else
on your defensive line.
Speaker 11 (01:07:55):
A huge key with that is is not only are
you building through the draft, but you're also building through
your free agency because you got rid of those big contracts,
right you free up the perse draft.
Speaker 1 (01:08:06):
The only thing that I have a problem with, and
that's great, and I understand the financial windfall that is here.
You're drafting those guys. Those are your guys, and now
someone else is going to benefit from your guys that
you but.
Speaker 2 (01:08:23):
Everybody not gonna get to bring in. There's a lot
of coaches that get brought in to change the culture.
Speaker 3 (01:08:28):
No, I agree with that.
Speaker 2 (01:08:29):
Trim the Fat and Aaron he may be one of those.
But he's getting nine to twelve million to do it.
I don't feel sorry for him, but.
Speaker 1 (01:08:37):
He's gonna be nine to twelve million looking for a
job again and gonna try to go back somewhere else.
Speaker 3 (01:08:42):
And that's the problem that I have.
Speaker 2 (01:08:43):
He always going to be a defensive coordinator in the
league until he decides not to, no doubt. But my
point is we're getting these opportunities to be head coaches,
but we're being the fall guy in a situation that
I should not have been put in.
Speaker 3 (01:09:00):
All this should have happened before I got there. And
let me build.
Speaker 1 (01:09:03):
Around that to America. Hey, trust me, I believe it
every single day. Our number two is just about done.
It'll be the final segment of the week works. Yeah,
we got football games this weekend, Texas versus Georgia, and
of course I gotta let you hear from my guy,
Jameis Winston brings it one mode time as only JMO can.
(01:09:27):
Right here, crab legs right here on the morning kickoff
on sports Radio him thirteen hundred The Zone. What a
great week of shows, And if you missed any of
our shows, well, first off, what are you doing?
Speaker 3 (01:09:40):
What are you doing? Second of all, get over to.
Speaker 1 (01:09:42):
Our podcast page where you can get caught up on
all the action. We had a great week of guests,
starting with Joe Cook of Inside Texas, Danny Davis over
the Austin American Statesman, Eric Henry of Porns two for seven,
Brian Jones of CBS Football Today, hilarious hilarious conversations with him,
(01:10:06):
and of course we had Ann Parker Coleman of KVU
previewing high school football. Before we get into the final
segment of the show and send you into the weekend,
shout out to all the high school basketball teams that
are starting their seasons today. I know we've been waiting
(01:10:28):
a long time. If you're a basketball parent, you've been
waiting for this moment and the season games officially start today.
So shout out to the Flugerville Hendrickson Hawks as they
start their basketball season tonight, and all the teams around
the central Texas area. Because there's a lot of parents
(01:10:50):
around here, former Texas Longhorn parents, professional parents that are
looking forward to their seasons, and one thing that we
all have in common, we love watching our kids play.
Speaker 3 (01:11:03):
So it's an exciting time.
Speaker 1 (01:11:05):
And I know that Flugerville Hendrickson is expected to do
some big things this year, so we'll see what happens there.
But I do want to get into this conversation because
the football season is still going on. Texas Longhorns are
having a big time matchup against the Georgia Bulldogs. We
have NFL action. This weekend, we have a big matchup
(01:11:28):
between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos. This
is Patrick Mahomes against the Broncos in the AFC West.
But Patrick Mahomes was asked about something that is very
serious in sports and obviously has a.
Speaker 3 (01:11:43):
Lot to do with betting. And Patrick Mahomes had this.
Speaker 1 (01:11:47):
To say about all those that are out there betting
and those that should stay away from it.
Speaker 3 (01:11:52):
I mean they let us know.
Speaker 12 (01:11:53):
I mean the NFL and NFLPA trying to tell us
all the different rules that you can and can't do.
I just stay stay away from it, just because I
don't want to put myself in that position. I mean,
that's something that your life's so great, while I'll mess
with it, you know, And so it does get I
think more than anything. To me, it gets weird sometimes
when like your fans talking about it, just because like
(01:12:14):
you're just trying to go out there and live your
life and play the game, and sometimes they get really
attached to it even more than like the regular fan
because they have money on the line. And so for
me to them, I would just say, don't do anything
that you can't recuperate or live without and so it's
it's it's a crazy world we live in these days
seeing all this stuff happen. But I think you just
focus on the football and focus on the sport that
(01:12:35):
you love and while you're here, and you have to
worry about all other stuff.
Speaker 3 (01:12:38):
And that is the truth. Like you said, you can't.
A lot of people like to go chase it.
Speaker 1 (01:12:43):
They chasing it because they lost it and then all
of a sudden your whole world is turned upside down.
Speaker 3 (01:12:49):
So be careful with that. But the big game that
we will be talking about.
Speaker 1 (01:12:54):
Uh for the rest of the weekend is the Texas
Longhorns going to Athens, Georgia and taking on the Georgia Bulldogs.
Speaker 3 (01:13:02):
Texas five and a half point dog.
Speaker 1 (01:13:05):
By the way, entertainment purposes only for those that are
worth entertainment purposes only, Texas is a five and a
half point dog. But the conversation for coach Sark was
as coach Sark is a big football fan and he
gets to go into these different arenas in areas to
go in these games. Coach Sark was asked, when he
gets there and he takes that walk around the field
(01:13:27):
that he always does, what will be on his mind
and will he take it all in?
Speaker 3 (01:13:33):
How awesome is this?
Speaker 4 (01:13:35):
You know, we're gonna be playing at seven point thirty
at Sanford Stadium in a Top ten matchup against Georgia
in front of ninety some one thousand people, and they'll
probably be another seventeen to eighteen million people watching it
on TV.
Speaker 3 (01:13:48):
I mean, how lucky are we? So that's what I'll
be thinking about. You'll be taking it all.
Speaker 1 (01:13:53):
In and there will This will be I think we
talked about it a week ago about the most watched
football games. I think this will be the most watched
football game this weekend.
Speaker 3 (01:14:06):
Mark, I think you will too.
Speaker 2 (01:14:09):
I mean just the not just the Texas and Georgia game,
but the Alabama and Oklahoma game is a big deal. Yeah,
and the implications are like ridiculous, you know, like to
be able to see where these teams are going, and
A and M in that in that same conference, with
(01:14:29):
what they do stand on top, it's gonna be a
big deal.
Speaker 3 (01:14:33):
It's gonna be a big It's a big one. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:14:35):
This weekend starts off with Texas, A and M taking
on South Carolina. That kicks off at eleven and you
can watch that on ESPN. The second game is Arkansas
against LSU on the SEC network. Then you have on
ABC Oklahoma number eleven team taking on Alabama, and Texas
(01:14:57):
will be on ABC as well, So you got Texas
A and M following. Texas will be following Texas A
and M against the Georgia Bulldogs.
Speaker 2 (01:15:07):
If Seller's really out mean good quarterback for South Carolina.
Speaker 3 (01:15:15):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:15:15):
I got to go to the student availability because I was,
yeah the student report.
Speaker 3 (01:15:22):
I heard that he elected to stay out, that he's
not injured.
Speaker 1 (01:15:28):
His name is not on the out, his name is
not on the questionable, and his name is not on
the doubtful, So we'll see what ends up happening. They
said he may be coming back to South Carolina anyway,
so I don't know what that looks like. But also
this weekend, Jameis Winston will be making his appearance as
a starting quarterback once A come on in New York.
(01:15:50):
But we thought we would have Jamis tell us about
how he ranks his favorite fast food chains.
Speaker 8 (01:15:57):
Where we get McDonald's to go with the arches at two?
Should we want Chipote? Well, kind of like Magpon. It's
really it's like the healthy Ncdoness. I'm gonna go with
four Dunking Donuts, man it Dunkin Donuts coffee over Starbucks.
Speaker 3 (01:16:18):
Go three.
Speaker 8 (01:16:20):
Old school piece of hut, like with the buffet piece
of hut. What's one of my favorites. So I'm just
gonna go seven Chick fil A. Gott a love of
that chicken. One Subway eat Fresh and we'll just put
them down there. Panda Express it's not really impressive.
Speaker 3 (01:16:44):
I'm sorry.
Speaker 8 (01:16:45):
Papa John's Pizza, Papa Jazze, y'all better than than Pizza Hut.
Now Arby's them curly fries, but I better the Subway.
Chrispy Kree, Oh my goodnes. Krispy Kreme definitely would have
been before Docking Donuts. I love donk I love chrispy Kreme.
(01:17:05):
It's like they milt in your mouth, like those little
baby circles.
Speaker 3 (01:17:10):
What is wrong with Jamis? I love the baby circles.
I love me some Jameis Wednesday.
Speaker 2 (01:17:18):
Can we start now that he's starting? Can as long
as he's starting, let's do the Jameis Winston Report.
Speaker 3 (01:17:23):
We will definitely do a Jamis well right now.
Speaker 1 (01:17:28):
I want to make sure that you're tuned in all
weekend long, starting with the Craig Way Show this afternoon
from two to five. We have Texas Basketball tomorrow at noon.
That's right, you can make sure you're tuned into that.
It will be on AM thirteen hundred the Zone. We
will also have the Third and Longhorn Pregame Show, followed
(01:17:50):
by the Longhorns Game Day with Mark Henry camp Parker
and special guests Rob Babers.
Speaker 3 (01:17:56):
That kicks off at three thirty. And then of course
you have the Texas.
Speaker 1 (01:18:00):
Football game with Craig Way and Keith Morland from Athens, Georgia.
Hoorn's got to go out there and handle their business.
You also have the Longhorn and Third and Longhorned postgame.
Speaker 3 (01:18:12):
Show that can be heard right here as well.
Speaker 1 (01:18:16):
From Rigamery for Marcus, for all those involved, just remember this,
don't believe everything you see, because even salt looks like sugar.
Have a great weekend and hook them Porn's peace.
Speaker 3 (01:18:29):
What's the greatest city in the world.
