This is a game plan Wednesday edition of The Morning
Kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Texas get into the initial college football rankings. Cowboys make moves,
but is it too late? Danny Davis of The Austin
American Statesman joins us at seven p thirty four to
(00:58):
talk all things Longhorn Sean Miller. Time kicked off at
the University of Texas last night and we have big
games of the weekend. I am your host, Mike Harball
Hartes my co host is a WWE Hall of Famer
and is recognized as the world's strongest man. He is
d Mark Henry. Good morning Austin, and of course we
(01:21):
have our guy Marcus behind the boards. And if you
want to be a part of the show, all you
got to do is text the word Texas, follow by
your message to eight one five three zero. Standard data
and message rates may apply. That's the word Texas, follow
by your message to eight one five three zero. Standard
data and message rates may apply. Also, if you want
(01:42):
to leave a voicemail and voice your opinion, all you
got to do is use that talkback feature on the
new and improved and always free iHeartRadio app, touch that
red microphone, leave the message.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
If it's good enough, you might even hear it on air.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
Well, the college football rankings came out last night and
that was the talk. Yes, we will get into the trades.
That'll be in the next segment, and of course we
will talk to Danny Davis about all things Texas.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
But Texas basketball took the court as well.
Speaker 1 (02:16):
But the college football rankings came out last night and
Texas is India initial rankings. They come in at number eleven,
but they're one of the first teams out of the
Round of twelve. So Texas is at eleven. And the
reason why you're like, wait, what, they're out, Yeah, they're
(02:38):
out because you have automatic qualifiers that can get in
their conference champions group of five teams that can get
into the college football playoffs.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
So as this is being broken down, people are.
Speaker 1 (02:53):
Like, well, you know, there's still a lot of football
left to be played. That is one thousand percent true,
because there are teams that are gonna get popped. There
are teams that are gonna lose. Like this weekend, you
have number eight versus number nine in Texas A and M.
Texas A and EM, excuse me, Texas Tech versus BYU
(03:13):
Big Neon Kickoffice or College Game Day will be in
Lubbock this weekend, so they'll cancel each other out in
the Big twelve.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
Then you have some other games that will take place.
Speaker 1 (03:25):
I'm not sure if Indiana haven't looked at their schedule,
but a lot of people are talking about Texas Tech.
I mean, Texas A and M should have been the
number one team if you look at their record and
who they played and who they've beaten. They were saying
that they should be there but Ohio State closest game
has been against the University of Texas. Everybody else they've been,
(03:46):
they've been beating them. So those conversations exactly, So then
you get a chance to see now how everything is
going to play out. They're on the board, let's just
say that. And he talked about it before. Their season
is still in front of them. Everything is kind of
sitting right in front of them. And so on Monday,
(04:09):
before these rankings came out, coach Sark was talking and
was asked about Ryan Wingo and Jolannie McDonald as they
get ready to rest because Texas is on a bye
week this week. Don't forget, next game is against Georgia.
Georgia is still in the top five in the college
football rankings, so Texas has an opportunity to work its
(04:31):
way back up there. But they need Wingo and of
course Jolanie McCoy McDonald.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
Ryan.
Speaker 4 (04:38):
It's what we thought, you know, I mean, he's you
know again, I'm gonna limit him probably. I don't know
how much he's really gonna practice this week. Quite frankly,
I just want him to get as healthy as we
can get him. We don't think he's gonna miss time.
But I don't think he'll be one hundred percent either, right,
and so how close to one hundred percent can we
get him? You know, he's a receiver, his hands are
(04:59):
import sortant, the film is important. So we'll again, you know,
we'll minimize him a ton. Hope I do walk throughs
this week and then try to get him ready for
the ball game next week, which we think he will be,
which is a good sign. Jilani's in protocol, and just
like last week, you know, that's really out of my
hands at that point.
Speaker 5 (05:19):
I'm glad we don't play Saturday.
Speaker 4 (05:21):
A little different protocol for a safety than it is
for a quarterback, you know, of getting cleared to play,
and so the fact that you know, we feel confident
as long as he stays the course of where he's
at this morning from where he was Saturday, all signs
are good.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
There and that is the most important part. He's right,
It's different. Quarterback is getting hit every once in a while. Yeah,
safety is hitting the whole time.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
Right, He's coming up and trying to lay the hat
to people exactly.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
That could make for a bad day.
Speaker 1 (05:50):
Another part of this conversation that we needed to get
to is Remember this is the second bye week for
the University of Texas.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
That's what everybody was like.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
I was looking on some social media, they were like, wait,
we have another by Yes, there's another bye week in
the second part of the season. And coach sark the
first one they were doing self scouting, self evaluation, and
so he was asked about this time, how do you
approach this second buy as opposed to the first one.
Speaker 4 (06:18):
We have got to dig deep into who we are
right now. We've got to dig into the things that
are causing us issues in all three phases right now.
We got to look at how people are attacking us
in all three phases right now, and and and and
we got to we've got to be forward thinkers, right
and and what are people going to do when they
look at our tape? And how are they going to
(06:39):
try to attack us? And we've got to make sure
that we've got enough, you know, tools in our toolbox
to combat that stuff. And so, as much as it
is I had like I want to get a head
start on Georgia, we got to look at ourselves first,
and we got to make sure that we're buttoned up
in all three phases.
Speaker 5 (06:55):
As much as it is, getting ready.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
For our for our future opponents, and coach sar and
he understands that because this team got better week to
week improvement, we're starting to see that. We see guys growing,
we see each offensive lineman getting better. We talked about
the calls on the offensive line, quarterback looking more confidence,
(07:18):
getting awards. He was a Manning Star of the Week,
he was the Davey O'Brien's Elite eight, and of course
he was the.
Speaker 3 (07:25):
SEC Offensive Player of the week.
Speaker 1 (07:29):
Speaking of the SEC, we've seen a lot of coaches
get fired.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
We've talked about it.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
Two of them and Brian Kelly and Hugh Freese all
got let go. And coach Start was asked about the
high profile coach firings and what he thought about the buyouts.
Speaker 4 (07:49):
That should surely mean yes, right, because who wants to
take a job without any you know, the fact that
the amount of pressure that coaches are under, the amount
of scrutiny, under the amount of you know, one week
you're hero, the next week year zero mentality that that
fan bases and people want to have. Surely coaches want
some security to what they sign up to go do.
Speaker 5 (08:11):
We work really hard and I get it. We all
want to win and we're.
Speaker 4 (08:14):
All busting our tails to try to win, and sometimes
things don't go your way, especially in our conference.
Speaker 5 (08:21):
It's tough.
Speaker 4 (08:21):
And so the idea that he you know, coaches you know,
don't want don't want some security and the jobs that
they take.
Speaker 5 (08:30):
That doesn't that doesn't quite make sense to me.
Speaker 4 (08:32):
You know, it should be like man, somewhere in here,
somebody has got to be willing to say, hey, let's
see if this can work itself out. Not every year,
not all sixteen teams in the SEC are going to
go to the playoff.
Speaker 5 (08:46):
It's just not reality. We're talking about trying to get
four or five teams in this year.
Speaker 4 (08:49):
Last year we got three?
Speaker 5 (08:52):
Should we got three teams?
Speaker 4 (08:53):
And what do we have three or four in the
top ten in the country right now? And so it's
really difficult and everybody's fighting for it, and I know
we all want to go to the playoffs, but you know,
I just think it's really hard to think that a
coach is going to bust his tail. And it's not
just about the coach, it's the staff and it's the players.
Speaker 5 (09:11):
And I get it.
Speaker 4 (09:12):
We're this is a lucrative industry that we're part of,
and the TV deals and the college Football Playoff, and
there's a lot going into it. Well, sometimes you got
to pay the guy that's the one leading the ship
and driving the ship. And again I would have said
that if I was an assistant coach right now. It
just is what it is. As you guys know, I'm
a fan of college football. I watch what goes into
(09:34):
every one of these games and the exposure and College
Game Day and Big New Kick and all the things
that go into it. Well, the coach is doing a
lot of that work to get that done, and he's
recruiting well, and we're trying to do all these things, and.
Speaker 5 (09:48):
So hey, that's the price you pay.
Speaker 4 (09:51):
If you hired a coach and you don't think that
he's the right coach for you, that's part of it.
You got to pay him. That's just the way it works, unfortunately.
But that's the industry that we're in. And so if
you're not willing to pay a coach if what his
contract is, well maybe you're probably not gonna get one
of the coaches you thought you might get. I always
find it interesting. I'm gonna go on a little bit
(10:12):
of a soapbox here, everybody wants to fire their coach.
Who you gonna hire? There's all these jobs out there
right now, who's everybody going to hire?
Speaker 5 (10:23):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (10:23):
We'll find out, we're gonna somebody's got to be the
head coach. Well, let's find out who they're going to hire.
Speaker 6 (10:28):
Now.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
I would expect him to take that stance.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
And and he and he's exactly right, you know, and
you you these coaches that are getting hired obviously.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
Are out of work, and the ones that aren't that
they have to do.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
To buy out situation to take bring them from another team.
It's going to require a lot of money to do that.
And where where's that money gonna come from? So like,
there's a lot of a lot of questions to be
answer in that whole scenario of whether or not the
coach is worth it.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
But if you.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
Don't have a coach that is proven and worth that,
then very likely you're not a winning team.
Speaker 1 (11:17):
So you got a Peds guy, start hit the nail
on the head. Yeah, who are you hiring after that?
After you fire the guy? I'm not guaran fire exactly
retray and you're not guaranteed to win it's the playing
field is not the same.
Speaker 3 (11:36):
Speaking of not being the.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
Same, coming up next, we're gonna talk about the Dallas
Cowboys and the moves that they made and is.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
It too little too late? Are you already building for
next year?
Speaker 1 (11:48):
We'll talk about it right here on the morning kickoff
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred the Zone.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
Coming up in the next.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
Segment, we have our guy, Danny Davis of the Austin
American Statesman, talking all things Texas Longhorns. We'll ask him
what he thought about the rankings, the Vanderbilt game, and
of course we've got to talk Texas women's basketball.
Speaker 3 (12:12):
But right now.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
A lot went on in the nf of AL yesterday,
and needless to say, one of the biggest stories that
came out was the Dallas Cowboys making trades. Yes, we
started the show talking to Tommy Yarsh of Dallascowboys dot
Com and he was talking about the trade for Logan
Wilson to the Dallas Cowboys with the Cincinnati Bengals. Then
(12:37):
later in the day we got the big news that
the Cowboys were making the trade for a run stopper.
Speaker 5 (12:44):
They made a huge one.
Speaker 7 (12:46):
No team very famously as Jerry Jones will tell us
no team values stopping the run and getting interior pressure
than the Dallas Cowboys. They may have acquired the best
in the NFL to do it. Quinn Williams is now
ex to get traded to the Dallas Cowboys. Look, this
is a blockbuster trade.
Speaker 5 (13:05):
Second one. We talked about it, second one of the day.
It is a first rounder.
Speaker 7 (13:09):
And more minunderstanding is it is the Cowboys first rounder,
not the Packers first round.
Speaker 5 (13:14):
Remember they have two. That really is what ended up.
Speaker 7 (13:17):
This is really what ended up getting this deal done.
Jerry Jones promised us last night that he was going
to make some trades. Had one that was Logan Wilson.
This second one, which the paperworkers getting filed. It's getting
wrapped up right now. An absolute blockbuster, Quinn Williams landing with.
Speaker 5 (13:32):
The Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 7 (13:33):
If you watch that Cowboys defense last night, you might
have said, well, they're not one player away. They got
two players, two really good players, especially one of the
best in the NFL, Quinn Williams. Tom This Jets organization
knew they had issues, they had trade pieces. They have
held off on making a deal until they got Godfather
offers and they get two of them, trading Quinn and
(13:56):
trading Sauce.
Speaker 3 (13:58):
Unbelievable. Wow. And you have those two guys that are
so top heavy on that.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
Team up and they need that money to spend on
offense next year.
Speaker 3 (14:12):
Picks. The picks are the things that the Giant, all
the picks that they have the next two years.
Speaker 2 (14:19):
Yeah, that's that's why they made those moves.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
You have to be able to have those types of
picks because that gives that gives solace to what Aaron
Glenn is going to be able to work with. Because
now you're looking at this team. The person that I'm
sad for is Garrett Wilson because Garrett Wilson didn't get
a chance to get moved and now he's still sitting
(14:45):
there dealing with the nonsense that is the the New
York Jets. And Brits Hall was another one that didn't
get a chance to get out of there. They were
talking about him possibly going to the Kansas City Chief right,
but that ended.
Speaker 2 (15:01):
Up feeling did not want to give them a second
round pick.
Speaker 3 (15:05):
I don't know why not.
Speaker 1 (15:07):
I mean, I gotta look at that contract and see
what exactly where he is. But the New York Jets
look like the winner in this deal along with I
would say the Indianapolis Colts. The Indianapolis Colts now being
able to make a move to go get Sauce Gardner,
(15:27):
that's going to tell you that they're going all in.
They're moving all in and now looking at the Jets
picks for next year, they have a first round. They
have two first round picks and two second round picks
for next year. For twenty twenty seven, they have three
first round picks now, So they did what they needed
(15:48):
to do to kind of go in there and try
to feel those voids that they are missing. Because quarterback
play is gonna be something that they're obviously going to
be looking for. They're gonna need to replace a defensive
lineman and a cornerback, so they're gonna be and they
can get young and they don't have to spend all
that money. So I'm looking at it and saying, okay,
(16:10):
let's see what they do next. But the other thing too,
you're looking at the Cowboys and a conversation about the Cowboys, is.
Speaker 3 (16:16):
It too late for this move.
Speaker 1 (16:19):
You've been wanting Mozzi Smith to be traded, Well he gone,
So now you got you got that. The only person
you gotta worry about now is your guy Draymon Diggs.
Speaker 2 (16:29):
And he's but they can cut him in January and
free up that money.
Speaker 3 (16:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (16:35):
So now you look at this Cowboys team and I'm
still trying to figure out what was the moves that
they wanted to make that is now gonna make us
believe Okay, we're in a good spot now.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
Well, I think that the number one thing is and
I told you this before the show. I never I
never incurrige tanking. I want you to play hard, work hard,
try to win every day. In this case, that would
(17:11):
be counterproductive for the Cowboys because they have their first
round pick right now. If the draft was tomorrow, they'd
have their tenth or eleventh pick, which is, you know, good,
but no, they need a top five. They don't need
(17:32):
to win five games or six games and then end
up getting picking seventeenth or eighteenth like they always do,
like don't do. But with this additions to this defense,
which I'm going to talk about in my world's.
Speaker 3 (17:49):
Strongest take this, this could be really good for the Cowboys.
Speaker 2 (17:56):
I mean, especially if Agent zero is back and healthy
and able to run downhill with no guards come and
looking for him, because you know who the guards are
gonna be worried about.
Speaker 3 (18:11):
Quinn Williams and Clark.
Speaker 2 (18:14):
Yep, they You're gonna have to double team somebody one
of the two.
Speaker 1 (18:19):
They both pro bowlers. Well, he's one of the top.
He gets the most double teams at one point. Since
twenty twenty two, Quinn Williams is the most double teamed
player in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (18:33):
So, yeah, you're right, he's gonna take up some space.
Speaker 1 (18:36):
But we're not the only ones that are having a
tough time with all of this. Jets fans are having
a tough time, and some of them are the little guys.
Speaker 8 (18:49):
It's okay, okay, the Jets trended sauce today. Wow, No,
it's okay. I'll get you a different one. He went
to Indianapolis and they also treated They also traded Quinn Williams.
Speaker 9 (19:11):
He did.
Speaker 2 (19:12):
But that's how I feel every time the Cowboys lose.
I've told you that I have had tears fall before
over my team and it's disappointed. Man like that little kid,
(19:36):
He's the poster child for everybody that's a fanatic. That's
what a fan is, really a fanatic that's the shortness
of it, that's the abbreviation of it. We're fanatical, and
Jerry Jones made a lot of fans, a lot of
fanatics happy yesterday for the first time in a long
(19:58):
long time.
Speaker 3 (20:00):
You believe that.
Speaker 2 (20:01):
I think there's a lot of Cowboy fans that are encouraged.
And you know, like you want hope, you're selling hope
before the season with fantasy.
Speaker 3 (20:15):
It's all hope. It's the hope business.
Speaker 1 (20:18):
It's interesting that you say that because the Cowboys have
been talking about all in for quite some time now,
and I've been curious to what exactly does that mean.
I'm still supporting them. I'm still wearing a clown suit.
I'm a big fan of Dak Prescott, always will be.
But I heard Colin Cowherd say something yesterday that was really,
(20:42):
really true. And is the fact that Dak has been
keeping this team alive for so long that now you
start to feel bad for him. Yeah, because yeah, he's
taking all the darts and people want to continue to hate.
But if go and look at Dak's career, he's actually
(21:03):
pretty dog on good. And I didn't realize this until
he said it the other day. He's been a quarterback
for the Cowboys for ten years, ten years and the longest,
one of the longest tenured quarterbacks for the Dallas Cowboys
in history. But you also have to understand that if
that is the truth, why is it that they just
(21:26):
now decide to play real football.
Speaker 3 (21:29):
Because he's got three years left. Jerry said, he don't
know if he got.
Speaker 2 (21:34):
Three years left. Well, I'll tell you what I hope.
I hope he does.
Speaker 3 (21:39):
I was about to say that I hope he cut
his mic. Cut his mic. He's gonna say it, No,
I hope he does.
Speaker 10 (21:49):
That would have been the most ridiculous kind about here ever.
Speaker 2 (21:54):
But what I do hope is that he relinquishes the rains.
Give it to a football guy, Yeah, give it to
a football guy. Jerry, you did good. Yeah, I said it.
Speaker 3 (22:08):
Jerry, you did good. Oh man. But oh, here we go.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
But we're gonna talk more about it in the world's
drumpas takes. So if you're in your car, you at work,
get ready eight thirty.
Speaker 3 (22:22):
I need y'all to have your ear close today radio.
Oh there he is. That's called the teas folks. Coming
up next.
Speaker 1 (22:28):
We're gonna talk to our guy Danny Davis of the
Austin American Statesman as he breaks down the Texas Longhorns,
their rankings, and of course, what he thought about Saturday's performance,
right here on the Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back to the morning Kickoff
right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Speaker 3 (22:49):
It is Wednesday.
Speaker 1 (22:51):
It is hump Day and that can only mean one thing.
Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman. You can follow
him at Underscore Danny Davis and Danny, let's get.
Speaker 3 (23:03):
Right into it. Texas football.
Speaker 1 (23:07):
Texas football has now found a way to get into
the college football rankings.
Speaker 3 (23:13):
They come in at number eleven.
Speaker 1 (23:17):
It's the initial and I know you probably don't care,
but we got to talk about it, Danny.
Speaker 6 (23:24):
I want to first talk about your hat. I need
to find out your hat.
Speaker 3 (23:26):
Guy.
Speaker 11 (23:26):
I know this is a lot of people are listening
on the radio, but I need to know who your
hat because that's the fly look. But I mean, this
isn't as a pointless preseason poll.
Speaker 6 (23:36):
Man.
Speaker 11 (23:36):
At this point of the season, you know, it's the
real starting to get pretty real, and you know this
is the point of the season where we're starting to
figure out we need to do what to get in
the playoffs. I mean, these rankings are pretty much all
that matters now. I mean you can toss out the
AP and the coach poll. This is really all that matters.
So it's not as pointless as a August rant about
the A people. But I think Texas was probably properly right.
(23:58):
And I don't know if you all thought he was
are too high or too low, but I think eleven
with two losses, I mean you can probably quibble. I
don't think Notre Dame is better than Texas, and you know,
one of those big twelve teams that's ahead of Texas
and one of them is going to fall off, So
I mean you could probably you maybe say Texas maybe
is a little better than eleventh. But the fact of
(24:19):
the matter is go three and on this the rankings
aren't it. You're in, you're in the you're in the playoffs,
so you know, it is what it is. But I
think it's good to kind of see where Texas because
if Texas came into like eighteenth or something like that,
I think people be freaking out right now and worried
about those playoff chances. So this is a good indication
of where this team currently stands in the eye at
the Committee, the only people that actually matter.
Speaker 2 (24:39):
Danny, I thought that Texas would have been above both
of the Big twelve teams because of the strength of schedule,
who they're playing. You didn't feel like that they deserved
even though those teams.
Speaker 3 (24:55):
Have less losses.
Speaker 11 (24:59):
No, I mean b YU is undefeated, bu deserves to
bearing ahead of Texas. You know they could be playing
they could play eight terrible teams Texas. Texas still lost
to Florida, So I mean, I don't. Maybe if Texas
was a one loss Texas team that lost to Ohiose State,
you can make that argument, but I'm not going to
quibble with don't defeated b YU team being ranked above
a Texas team that lost to Florida. Texas Tech is
(25:22):
a different story, but still that's one loss as opposed
to And the fact of the matter is after this weekend,
if Texas, Texas doesn't have to worry about this weekend,
but after this weekend, one of those team is going
to lose another. If Tech loses to b YU, Texas
going to drop well below below Texas. And these rankings
and if they both have one loss, can maybe make
an argument that Texas should be higher. So I'm not
(25:43):
you know, the Big twelve is not the SEC. But
Texas still has that loss of Florida, which is a
damning loss when you lose to a team of fire
its coach mid season. If if Texas has been ranked
ahead of b YU, maybe they invite me onto a
provo station to talk about talk about why that was
a rip off. So I wasn't surprised by that.
Speaker 2 (26:02):
Then what was the scuttle but about the offensive line
play and the consistency and the level of consistency that
aren't played with on Saturday.
Speaker 6 (26:14):
I mean, it looked they looked really good.
Speaker 11 (26:15):
Now we'll we'll see if that's just they looked really
good against Vanderbilt or if you know, moving Cole Hudson
to the left guard was was the key the key
all along, which maybe raised some other questions about you know,
why they why they hadn't figured that out earlier. But
they you're not allowing to sack the entire game. They
didn't have a turnover. I think that was the first
time since the Michigan game last year. So I mean
that had been a pretty pretty long time arch coming
(26:37):
off the concussion protocol looked really really good over the
hundred yards passing for two straight games, So I mean,
it's kind of amazing what happens when your quarterbacks are
not getting murdered every time he dropped back to pass.
Speaker 6 (26:48):
So I think I think all all is a good
step forward.
Speaker 11 (26:51):
Now they have a week to rest, relaxed, look at
the game film and see what worked, and then we'll
see if that's yeah, because I have a feeling the
pass rush maybe a little bit tough, tough fran Athens
and it was what we saw with the Commodore's, but
at least it was a good step forward. Once again,
if they had gone out there and giving up seven
sacks to Vanderbilt, I think that the tone would be
a lot different different this week.
Speaker 1 (27:11):
Speaking of that, Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman,
you can follow him at Underscore Danny Davis, the Texas
defense did get out there and got to the quarterback,
six sacks, a force fumble, and was really getting.
Speaker 3 (27:25):
After Diego Pavia.
Speaker 1 (27:27):
Obviously in the second half, it was a little bit
different because of the personnel that was on the field
but that defensive line showed up and showed out last
week against Vanderbilt.
Speaker 11 (27:39):
Yeah, I mean it's the defensive line that I think
they're playing the way we expected and Colin Simmons is
playing the way we expected Colin Simmons to play. Ethan
Burke is with the way he closed last season, playing
the way we expected him him to play. I mean
that sack against Diego late, I mean, I think Diego
gets all the applause and the world for bouncing back
up and then completing the completing the pass on fourth down,
because I would have stayed down.
Speaker 6 (28:01):
I would bounce back up and Ana some of these
guys they.
Speaker 11 (28:04):
Brought in and to compliment the Anthony Hills and some
of those linebackers they brought back. I mean, it's just
working well right now, and we'll to see if they
can continue going forward during this tough part of their schedule.
Speaker 6 (28:15):
But I think this is what we expected from this
defense going forward.
Speaker 11 (28:18):
And now they've got to figure out what's going on
with the back end because that that did not look
as great on Saturday.
Speaker 1 (28:23):
Well, I think the importance of Michael Tapp being back, obviously,
Jelani McDonald being in concussion protocol. But some of the
other guys that got in, some of the younger players
got some quality reps and some pressure situation, so hopefully
on that back end they'll get the communication figured out.
Anthony Hill took responsibility on some of that as far
(28:46):
as the communication, he said, most of that is on me,
but I'm with you. They got to clean that up,
and they got to clean that up quickly. Yeah, And
you know that's what a junior it's it's weird. I
feel like Anthony has been here forever, but he hasn't
been here that long. But you know, that's what you
expect for a leader and the leader of that defense
to say, to take that responsibilities, especially since he is
(29:08):
kind of the voice of that defense, especially Michael tats
out there. But the same time, you know, he's University
of Texas football players. You know that these are some
mistakes that you shouldn't be making at that level.
Speaker 11 (29:18):
When you're these four or five star guys, and you know,
at some point some of these younger kids have got
to grow up really past because it's next man up
and when a Michael Tafford Jelani mcdumalok goes down and
your numbers called. You got you got to go in
there and not be giving up wide open, seventy yard
touchdown passes in the in the fourth quarter when you're
trying to slam the door. Because you know, Texas was
lucky enough to have a twenty four point least, this
(29:39):
didn't really matter. If that's a closer game, those mistakes
are going to be a lot more brutal.
Speaker 3 (29:43):
No doubt, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (29:44):
Before we let you go, we got to talk about
the Texas women's basketball team. Very impressive against Incarnate Word,
being able to go out and spread the love. You
got a chance to see a Leah Crump shoot the basketball,
play some good defense.
Speaker 3 (30:00):
It seems like the game.
Speaker 1 (30:01):
Coach Vick, you you were standing with me when I
asked him about the freshman speed of the game. She
seemed to fit in in game number one.
Speaker 3 (30:08):
Now.
Speaker 1 (30:08):
I know the intensity is going to be a little
bit more as the games go on, but her being
out there getting that experience showed on Monday night.
Speaker 11 (30:19):
Yeah, we'll get a better gauge of everything on Friday
when they when a ranked Richmond team comes to town.
This incarrent Word team, they are a D one school
that's a Southend school that's kind of like the middle
of that pack. So it wasn't the best best temperature
way to measure the temperature in the room. But you know,
senior freshman play like that in her first game, getting
(30:40):
the start and shooting the way she did is never
never a bad thing. That's there's a reason why she
was a top five recruit in this in this past class,
the highest ever recruit they could sign here at Texas.
And you know, we've heard nothing but her praises being
sung since she got to campus, and this is probably
probably why. And you know, when you have her, when
you have a Jordan Lee, when you have Madison Booker
and some of those post players diad down below, you know,
(31:03):
I don't think we're gonna have to have a old
Mark Henry over here asking me why Rory's not scoring
twenty points a game, because she's just gonna be dishing
out the rock to those shooters and letting them do
the work and hitting a couple of jumpers down the
stretch and adding the sexist team is gonna be pretty
pretty good.
Speaker 6 (31:15):
They're pretty deep.
Speaker 2 (31:16):
Dan, you can't be mad at me for one of
my favorite player to score I want, I won't listen.
I'm gonna give me a Rory Harmon jersey, and I
want the number. The number is gonna not be her number.
The number is gonna be how many points I want
her to screw the game?
Speaker 11 (31:34):
Uh Rory's Rory's number if it indeed does get retired,
which is a possibility if they if they win a
national championship, it's not going up in those rafters. She's
not going I mean, she'll go into Hall of Honor
here at Texas, but she's not going to hall of
honor because of the point she scored. She's going to
hall of honor because she's about to become the all
time assist the leader here at Texas, breaking Cami a threat.
(31:54):
She's probably the one of the greatest players here ever
her record and also which plays on defense.
Speaker 6 (32:00):
So you know, I think you should go put eight hundred.
Speaker 11 (32:02):
On that jersey because that's that's that's the kind of
the assist number she's going for on probably hit soon.
But you know, if you want to score twenty points
a game, I'm sure she'd appreciate it.
Speaker 6 (32:11):
I'm sure she'd love to choot the rock on one.
Speaker 3 (32:13):
Yeah, there we go. There.
Speaker 1 (32:16):
He is Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman. You
can follow him at Underscore Danny Davis. Enjoy the bye
week from football, but I'll see you.
Speaker 3 (32:25):
On Friday at the women's game.
Speaker 1 (32:27):
That sounds good, right there is Danny Davis of the
Austin American Statesman. When we come back, we'll close out
our number one. We'll talk more about those college football
rankings and get your thoughts on a couple of other
things right here on the morning kickoff on sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Speaker 3 (32:46):
Great stuff.
Speaker 1 (32:46):
A bout Danny Davis of the Austin American stations and
make sure you follow him at Danny Davis at Underscore
Danny Davis. Also at the top of the hour, we
will talk Texas men's basketball.
Speaker 3 (32:57):
Miller time.
Speaker 1 (32:58):
Sean Miller's time at the university started last night, and
I think folks are going to like what they have seen.
The sec most nine teams in the first college football
Top twenty five ranking of the season. And you know,
people are always talking about each team and how it
(33:19):
all comes out and who's where and what are the numbers.
But as we talked about just a little while ago,
it kind of lets itself play its way out of it.
You look at the first round or the top four
Ohio State, Indiana, Texas, A and M and Alabama. Remember
they were trying to get him fired at the beginning
(33:40):
of the year.
Speaker 3 (33:42):
Buy out, I'll pay it. Let me win the lottery,
I'll pay it.
Speaker 1 (33:45):
That woman at now, she is sitting for a row church.
She is at all the fundraisers.
Speaker 3 (33:52):
Talk about how Grady he's the best ever he is.
I was just playing. I was going through a hall.
You I was. It wasn't me. It was not me,
It was you, girl. It was you. And that is
why you.
Speaker 1 (34:06):
Look at this team and you'd say boom, you say,
Alabama's right there. Then you start to look at how
else it plays out. Number five Georgia. Texas plays Georgia
in two weeks, so they'll get a chance to fight
against them. Ole Miss is still rolling on with Lane Kiffin.
But you know as well as I do. Most of
(34:27):
the time they find a way to fall off and
lose a game that they're not supposed to lose. You
look at BYU, well BYU at number seven, Texas Tech
at number eight. They're playing each other this weekend, so
that will cancel each other out. Then you look at
number nine Oregon, who was their biggest win? Who was
their biggest loss? They ended up losing the game to Indiana,
(34:50):
So now you're looking at it and saying, Okay, well,
what's their next big win. They're gonna have to go
out there and win again.
Speaker 3 (34:56):
Not there, Dang.
Speaker 1 (34:56):
People are trying to figure out how the hell are
they in this conversation after losing the first two games
of the season, and they're in at number two. Virginia
at number eleven, is projected to be the ACC champion
because everybody else in that division sucks, And then you
look at what's going on at number twelve. Memphis is
(35:19):
supposed to be the American Conference champion, So we'll see
what happens there. Then you get to these other games
and you're like, Okay, regular season is gonna play out.
I guarantee what we saw today on the college football
rankings will not be the same at the end because
(35:40):
so many other teams have to play each other to
close out the season.
Speaker 2 (35:45):
And two of those teams that are ranked up there.
You mentioned that Texas will play Georgia, but Texas also
will play and m at the end of the season.
Speaker 3 (35:53):
Yep. So that's two teams.
Speaker 2 (35:55):
And we had this conversation a month ago, and when
I said that, you know, Texas, if they handle their business,
that they'll have a chance.
Speaker 3 (36:07):
And because even.
Speaker 2 (36:09):
With a loss, there's three or four teams that they
can beat that's gonna elevate them, and other teams don't
have that option. You look at what's gonna happen. Indiana
is gonna have to play Ohio State. They're gonna they're
gonna one of them. They're gonna drop. They're not gonna
drop far. If they stay at the top one and
(36:30):
two and somebody loses, the worst they could probably do
is seven. They're gonna be in the playoffs if they,
you know, don't lose two games. So like that, that's
a that's you can all sign those two ups. But
if Texas goes in and beats Georgia and and and
(36:51):
in aarm.
Speaker 3 (36:52):
There, they're gonna be in the top five.
Speaker 1 (36:54):
Oh yeah, absolutely, it's gonna be hard to keep them
out of the top five. Top three, well, they would
definitely be deep into the college football playoffs, possibly.
Speaker 3 (37:05):
A home game, maybe on the road.
Speaker 1 (37:07):
But as I said, number ten was Notre Dame number eleven,
Texas number twelve, Oklahoma thirteen, Utah, Virginia. We talked about
them because they're gonna get in just because of the ACC.
Louisville is fifteen and they are seven and one. Vanderbilt
sixteen with seven and two record. Georgia Tech is that
(37:29):
interesting case study for me when you look at what
they were able to do. They have one loss, and
they too will play a big game late in the
year because they got to play well. They already played
Georgia I think they already played Georgia well. I would
be the game that I was thinking of. Georgia Tech
is at eight and one, Miami's sitting at eighteen, at
(37:50):
six and two, USC six and two in the Big Ten,
Iowa six and two, Big game this weekend, Michigan twenty one,
Missouri twenty two. Missouri and Georgia played this weekend, so
that will be a dog fight. Washington Huskies six and two,
Pittsburgh Panthers seven and two, and the Tennessee Volunteers the
(38:14):
only three lost team that is in the top twenty five.
Speaker 10 (38:18):
I would like to make a correction, they have yet
to play Georgia Tech perfect.
Speaker 1 (38:22):
Thank you for telling me that, because that's a big
game for me too, because that can knock out Georgia
and Georgia Tech. One of the two will knock themselves
out of that. So just like the games that we're
talking about for Texas, there's going to be opportunities moving
forward for all of these teams. That's why it's good
that this is the initial, but it's not the final,
(38:44):
and it's not the final. This is the final segment
of our number one. Our number two is just around
the corner. Texas Basketball Miller time started at the University
of Texas right here on the morning kickoff on sports
Radio and thirteen the zone.
Speaker 12 (39:02):
Out of ten seconds to go cold top of the
r eight seconds into Boca Titus. He'll lay it in
one final child, so Boka Titus with fifteen points and
that's gonna do it. Duke will win it by fifteen.
Final score tonight the Duke Blue Devils seventy five the
(39:23):
Texas Longmoorn sixty in the game that was far more
competitive as that for a lot of the ballut game
before Duke got some separation during the final eight minute.
Speaker 3 (39:32):
Welcome back to the morning kickoff.
Speaker 1 (39:33):
Our number two of the morning kickoff right here on
sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone and hour number one.
We got a chance to talk about Texas being ranked
number eleven in the initial college football playoff rankings. We
also talked about the Dallas Cowboys trade man, of course,
getting rid of Mozzi Smith and some picks.
Speaker 3 (39:52):
Danny Davis broke down the games on both.
Speaker 1 (39:55):
The football field and the basketball court for the women,
and as you just heard right there, the Sean Miller
era started off in a big time fashion in the
Dickey v Invitational, losing to Duke seventy five to sixty.
Speaker 3 (40:11):
And you heard Craig Wade talk about that ballgame.
Speaker 1 (40:14):
Texas went in too halftime leading thirty three to thirty two.
After they battled back in the second half of the
first half and got it to close out with a
one point lead in the second at halftime, but then
it finishes off forty three to twenty seven in the
second half and it was a seventy five to sixty final.
(40:38):
The starting lineup, Dalen Swain was starting and he had
sixteen points. He looked good, he was aggressive, took most
of the shots, took eighteen shots him on the game
Mattias vala twotist or whatever. Craig said. He had fifteen points.
He was nine to ten from the free throw line.
(40:59):
He was getting beat up. I mean that the physicality
in that game. That physicality in that game was ridiculous
on the officiating. I don't know why or how it
has to be like that every single time. People were
getting grabbed every time, while Texas was even fighting through
the screens as well. They could have been called on
(41:21):
some fouls on the perimeter. But it was a very,
very physical basketball game. Nick Cody got to start, Kendall
Weaver got to start, in treymond Mark, Jordan Pope came
off the bench, played thirty one minutes. He finished with
fifteen points as well. But all in all, as a
Texas basketball fan, you should be impressed with what you
(41:44):
saw from the beginning the first half. The defense was
suffocating on Cameron Boozer. Yeah, yeah, it was.
Speaker 2 (41:51):
I mean, I thought they played great, and you talked
about Vocatatas like that.
Speaker 3 (41:58):
Dude is a dog, He's tough.
Speaker 2 (42:02):
He played with passion, and that's something that we talked
about in years past. Texas had guards, but we haven't
had the big guys.
Speaker 3 (42:11):
And I even thought that athletic.
Speaker 2 (42:14):
Yeah, I thought that Lasina Torre who I called him
Draymond Green because he out there slapping people in and
stepping on feet, and hey, you need one of them.
Speaker 3 (42:26):
I was happy.
Speaker 2 (42:27):
I was happy with what I saw, and they never
quit even at the end when listen, guys, Duke is
going to be one of the top four teams. They
they gave them the business last night and Texas got
some bad calls and it was.
Speaker 3 (42:46):
Like being on the road where they were on the road.
Speaker 1 (42:50):
They were playing at in Charlotte, North Carolina against Duke.
Speaker 3 (42:54):
That was a true road game.
Speaker 2 (42:56):
It was a true road game, and so you had
to give Texas a little bit of grace. But I
saw the improvement. I saw the added toughness. They're taking
Miller's personality. Guys are scared though. The only negative is
they don't want to make a mistake. You don't want
(43:18):
to be the guy that miss a shot. Yeah, you
cannot play basketball like that. Out of every sport that
you can play, basketball is the only sport that if
you don't take the shot, you're failing.
Speaker 1 (43:33):
Well, I think too, what some of the things that
I saw last night, whether it was them still trying
to understand the offense because there was a bunch of
times during the rotation getting ready to swing the ball.
Speaker 3 (43:44):
How you got to be able to cut?
Speaker 1 (43:46):
I saw swaying because he's been in this offense for
quite some time, telling people when to cut, when to go.
He stood at one point telling the god cut through,
cut through, so I can come around. So they're still
learning in trump to get their rhythm together. They got
a game this weekend against Lafayette.
Speaker 3 (44:05):
That game tips off at two o'clock.
Speaker 1 (44:09):
You can hear right here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred,
the zone of the home of Texas Athletics.
Speaker 3 (44:17):
But watching that game yesterday.
Speaker 1 (44:21):
Gave you hope because you see people rebounding, you see
people boxing out, you see the tenacity that they're playing
with on defense. They were very disruptive yesterday.
Speaker 2 (44:33):
They were and you know, I'm a Cody fan and
I see potential in him, but I want him to
see it like me and see it's like my daughter.
Speaker 3 (44:43):
I can want it.
Speaker 2 (44:44):
For you, but if you don't want it more than
I want it for you, then.
Speaker 5 (44:49):
That was a problem.
Speaker 2 (44:50):
Right Because he did a drop step baseline shot that
was beautiful.
Speaker 3 (44:56):
He never went to it again in the game one.
Speaker 2 (44:59):
Time like post me up man, I got this, dude, Like,
that's the mentality that I didn't see from guys they
shot away from. I don't want I don't want the heat.
I don't want it to be about me. If you
make the shots, nobody's gonna say anything. Well, it's game one.
(45:19):
Everybody's trying to learn each other.
Speaker 1 (45:21):
Everybody's trying to understand each other's role, and the aggressiveness
in which they're going to play I think will be different.
Same thing we talked about during football. Everybody's trying to
figure each other first. It's the game number one, but
this team is. It was fun to watch the physicality
(45:42):
in which they were playing with. It was fun to
watch sets being called out when they're bringing up the
ball on offense. The communication of switching is important, stepping through,
fighting through those screens instead of automatically switching. I hate
switching time because it's lazy, because if you're not talking,
(46:05):
you're gonna get beat on the backside every single time.
And you saw Duke try to do that a little
bit in the second half. It was good to see
and as I said, the beginning of this basketball season
is something that we're all excited about because it's new.
It's a new staff, new play calling, new head guy
(46:29):
on the sideline.
Speaker 2 (46:30):
But it's a new energy in the buildings. It's not
complaining to me. And this is preemptim striking, I call it.
You should tell the referees, guys, we're gonna fight through screens.
You cannot allow these dudes to hipcheck us and push
us off cutting through. They're gonna trip us like it's
(46:56):
designed that way. So I hope that Coach Miller gives
the referees the business early, not in an aggressive way,
but just just to educate because I love the offense
that they ran. I love the I love the fighting
through to all of those those top screens. But you
have to let them, the referees that have to call
(47:17):
that vocatitas.
Speaker 3 (47:20):
He got drugged to the ground.
Speaker 2 (47:24):
Anytime that he did he pick and roll or came
up and checked his man off the pick and roll,
he got pushed in the chest with the forearm so
the guy could get space.
Speaker 3 (47:37):
That's that's that's a foul.
Speaker 2 (47:39):
And I thought that that those are things that have
to be talked about. Well, I'm gonna complain about the reps.
Speaker 1 (47:46):
I mean, I think I think Sean Miller, with his
resume and what he's been able to do over his
twenty years as a head coach and and what he
brings to the table, dude is gonna get this team right.
Speaker 3 (47:58):
You know, Oh yeah, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (48:00):
And he's gonna be able to He's been around, so
he'll be able to talk to those referees.
Speaker 3 (48:05):
Just fine.
Speaker 1 (48:06):
I have no doubt about you listen because yeah, because
I mean, his record speaks for itself. But as I
watched that game, there was just so much And I've
got a bunch of basketball buddies on a thread and
they were all excited about what they saw in Game one,
about how the team competed against Duke.
Speaker 2 (48:27):
Yeah, they they fought hard and I like that, that
that toughness. We talked about that before the season started,
like we were looking forward to seeing coach Miller's influence
on the on this team. Did you what did you
think about Dicky V getting emotional Sudan having a tournament
(48:48):
named after him that will outlive him he said his words.
You know, I just feel really good for him and
the message about what the tournament was about. You know,
like the v Foundation and the cancer awareness. Uh like, go,
he said, go get checked man, who stopped being tough?
Speaker 3 (49:11):
Guys?
Speaker 1 (49:12):
You said this last month. I mean, it's not being
a tough guys. This is November right now. This is
men's health, men men's mental health, prostate cancer awareness. Everything
is going on for this month when it comes to
health and Dicky v that's why this these tournaments are
(49:33):
going on during this time or these games. Let me
just say that, that's why these happened during these months
at the beginning of the season, because it's all about
men's health, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health month.
That's why November will not be shaving the entire month. Sorry,
it's just it's just the way it goes. I won't
(49:55):
be I won't be clean shaved. I will be cutting
my hair though, but I will not be shaved even
from November. So it's all about men's health. And Dick
Vattel has shown it four times. He's been through that
battle and he's still there and the emotion was warranted
because basketball hasn't been the same without him and it
(50:16):
won't be the same without him. That's why he's so
so special and that's why he.
Speaker 3 (50:20):
Got He's a bt pier baby.
Speaker 1 (50:24):
Coming up next, we got big games of the weekend
Texas A and m BYU and Texas Tech and LSU Bama.
I know LSU don't have their coach, but we're still
gonna talk about it right here on the morning kickoff
on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred, The Zone, College football
rolls on. Even though Texas does not play this week,
(50:47):
there's still games of interest.
Speaker 3 (50:49):
As we've talked about.
Speaker 1 (50:50):
You look at the SEC and all the teams that
are ranked in the top twenty five of the college
football playoffs, and the team that is at the very
top of it is the Texas A and M fighting
Aggie's as they are the number three team in the
new college Football Playoff rankings. They will take on Missouri,
(51:15):
the number twenty two team that is in those rankings,
and that game kicks off at two point thirty. It
is a big time matchup because Missouri's down to i
think their third string quarterback after everything's been done because
of the injuries that they've had and now they're trying
(51:36):
to find their way in this matchup.
Speaker 3 (51:39):
Then you also have to look at the.
Speaker 1 (51:42):
Other games that are going on number eight versus number
nine or seven versus eight, Texas Tech versus BYU in Lubbock.
Big College Game Day is on its way to Lubbock
for the first time in a long time. And these
are two teams and the Big Twelve that have huge,
(52:03):
huge implications as they move forward.
Speaker 2 (52:06):
Well, I mean all of all of the money that
was spent that is paying off of Texas Tech. Everybody's like,
you know, down on them and saying negative things about
the halves. Like, guys, let's not be hyperbolic about people
that have Like I love the fact that they are.
(52:30):
They care enough that they they're spending the money to
make their programs better. And spending the money to make
the programs better is doing better for the university because
they'll be able to give They'll be able to build
that new library, They'll be able to upgrade the facilities
for the students, They'll be able to increase the catering.
(52:50):
They'll be able to give more scholarship. Like if sports
is if sports and football and basketball are better, then
it makes it better for everyone.
Speaker 3 (53:00):
They building a new gym, they ain't building a new library.
Speaker 1 (53:05):
They gonna get around. It's like the building fund that church. Yeah,
where the money for the building fund? But we got
a new less we had to use it. Yeah, I
see you got a new f two point fifty. You
know what I'm talking about.
Speaker 3 (53:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (53:20):
So you start talking about like that, you start to
understand what it looks like. So b YU is number seven, Uh,
Texas Tech is number eight, Texas A and M is
number three, and Missouri is number twenty two. And then
you have the other game of the night that I
continue to talk about, and this is that LSU versus Alabama.
(53:44):
Alabama is the number four ranked team. We talked about
Kaitlyn de Boor. We talked about the fact that people
are trying, we're trying to get that man fired. Well,
now he's sitting at number four in the college football
playoffs one game, I mean, one spot above Georgia at
number five, two spots above Old miss and the SEC
(54:06):
has nine teams that are ranked. But this LSU team,
is this a dangerous team? Is this a team that
has marked us on their calendar because they look like
they quit on their coach. Not too long ago, it
looked like they quit on him, but which is why
he got fired. But now you're in a spot where
(54:26):
you got an opportunity to shock the world.
Speaker 3 (54:29):
Can they shock the world and.
Speaker 2 (54:32):
To make a statement about next year and and going forward,
like I want to play, I want to I want
to be on this team next year, like people are
going to step it up. Yeah, And you really think
that that this might be a trap game for Alabama.
Speaker 1 (54:51):
It's an SEC matchup, it's an SEC anything happened exactly?
God man, I don't know the way that they played
the last three weeks. I agree, I think they've been outstanding.
But you can look at that team and see that
it's wounded. You can look across you. You don't look
at social media. They look at social media.
Speaker 2 (55:10):
The scariest thing is a team that's in the corner
and they can upset the apple cart because they can
say you're not going, because we're not going, So I
want to come out here and play hard against you.
Speaker 1 (55:23):
They ain't catch both of us, y'all come out, They
ain't catching both. Then, you know, a game that we
were looking at at the beginning of the year that
we thought was going to be a huge game was
Indiana versus Penn State. And here we are now, Penn
State without their head coach, Indiana continues to punch people
in the face and keep it moving. Their coach takes
(55:45):
no prisoners, and he could care less about your feelings.
And here's the sad thing. He gonna get it exactly.
And you look at what Indiana is. They're nine to
ozh six to zero in the Big Ten. This ticket,
I'm sure, at the beginning of the year, was one
of the hottest tickets to have. You can get into
the game at penn Stak for twenty five dollars. For
(56:09):
twenty five dollars for a game where the number two
team in the nation is coming in to play. You
also got Georgia at Mississippi State. Georgia number five, Mississippi
State trying to find a way, trying to get it done.
Can they hang with Georgia? And is Georgia looking ahead
to playing Texas next week so they have to be
(56:32):
on their p's and q's. You also have Ohio State
playing Purdue. You have Oregon Big Big Game, number nine,
Oregon two thirty kickoff taking on Iowa at Iowa, Iowa's
number twenty ranked team in the land.
Speaker 2 (56:51):
Iowa was good at home too, Yes, and they're gonna
there is no secret I was gonna run the ball
and they're gonna throw to the tidy and they're gonna
play really good defense and you just have to be ready.
Speaker 3 (57:05):
That's it. Since it's a bye week.
Speaker 1 (57:07):
Do you want to fly down to Miami because we
can get into the game for eight dollars?
Speaker 3 (57:11):
No thing.
Speaker 1 (57:12):
We can get eighty dollars, eight dollars and they're playing Syracuse.
Syracuse is at Miami eight dollars to get.
Speaker 3 (57:20):
Into the ball game.
Speaker 2 (57:22):
I think that tomorrow I'm gonna pick Syracuse to beat Miami.
Speaker 3 (57:27):
Oh, is that your teaser? That's my teaser for tomorrow?
All right?
Speaker 10 (57:30):
Are you sure that's gonna it's gonna happen or are
you sure is anybody gonna see it?
Speaker 3 (57:36):
Well, nobody's gonna see it.
Speaker 2 (57:39):
So it's a safe pick because if I make that
big No, I don't have to worry about nobody put
it in my face?
Speaker 3 (57:46):
When no, because of what? What? Then? You also look
at this matchup.
Speaker 1 (57:51):
You have Auburn missing their coach versus Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt coming
off that loss. Are they gonna be able to rebound?
Are they gonna overlook Auburn or are they gonna be
ready to play? So there's a big time game there.
Virginia the number fourteenth rank. Virginia Cavaliers will host wake Forest.
(58:12):
Wake Forest can get it done.
Speaker 3 (58:14):
I'm not. I'll can score, but they can't play defense.
Speaker 2 (58:18):
Like I'm not, I'm not saying that Wake Forest is
gonna beat Virginia.
Speaker 3 (58:22):
Virginia is a six and a half point favorite in
y thing. That's easy.
Speaker 1 (58:26):
You got Louisville, who is ranked number fifteen. They're travel
they're hosting cal cal Is. Uh not gonna be a Louisville.
They're not gonna beat Louisville. Yeah, they're not gonna beat
Louisville in the nightcap Louisville the nightcap of the top
twenty five teams. Navy versus Notre Dame. No Navy seventy
(58:50):
one though, So Notre da ain't better come out and
play and keep their head on the swivel because that
could be a tough, tough matchup. I don't care what
you tape out, because the block block, no doubt, no doubt.
We also have football tonight Kent State at ball State
the MAC Action, and then you also have Northern Illinois
(59:12):
taking on Toledo. Those games really don't matter because they're
not going to be part of our bets. Last night
you have MAC Action as well. Akron beat Massachusetts Massachusetts
U mass Is oh to nine oh and nine on
the season.
Speaker 3 (59:25):
They just out there and then.
Speaker 2 (59:28):
Ohio beat him.
Speaker 3 (59:33):
They just outed.
Speaker 1 (59:34):
They the frisbee golf Miami of Ohio lost to Ohio
twenty four to twenty in MAC Action.
Speaker 3 (59:44):
Last night.
Speaker 1 (59:45):
Friday night, you have University of Houston, who is they
weren't even in the rankings. I just noticed that University
of Houston will take on you uc F. Friday night,
you got Northwestern Track traveling to USC. This is big
for USC because USC is sitting there at number nineteen.
(01:00:07):
They have to continue to win. And then Friday night,
the nightcap is two lane versus Memphis at eight o'clock.
So a lot of games this weekend that have a
lot of implications. But like I said before the game
that I'm I'm disappointed that doesn't have more weight to
it is Indiana versus penn Stak because penn Stak comes
(01:00:30):
into the season as the number two ranked team and
now you look at it and you have Indiana now
the number two ranked team going up against penn Stak
coming up next, got the World's Strongest Man bringing you
his world's strongest take right here on the morning kickoff
on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. You heard
(01:00:52):
the bat drops, so you know that could only mean
one thing. WWE Hall of Famer and World's Strongest Man,
the Mark Henry Juke his world's strongest take.
Speaker 3 (01:01:03):
Take it away, big fella hard. You know what time
it is? What's talking? Is it good time for the
world's strongest take by the World's strongest man by guess
back then they didn't know. Now I'm hot, they all
on me. Well, guys, here we go.
Speaker 2 (01:01:27):
I try to stay away from talking about the Cowboys,
but I can't help it because yesterday I got news
from the news reports about the you know, the trade deadline,
(01:01:47):
and Jerry Jones. For the first time in maybe two years,
he's done something that made me happy. Yes, I was happy.
Speaker 3 (01:02:03):
And I want him to keep that energy going. That's
the way you do it. Now, that's how you're supposed
to drive from that one. That's how you drive. That's
how you drive. That's how he's got to drive.
Speaker 2 (01:02:19):
He did not give away the draft pick that I
think they're gonna need the most they gave away a
first round draft pick, but that's it's not till next year.
They get a second round pick this year, which I
would have liked to keep that because we need so help,
(01:02:39):
so much help on the defensive line and defensive secondary
that you would have needed a second round pick at
corner of safety. But at this point, I was very
happy to see what they did because of money. Now
they have some more clean they have some more cleaning
to do, but they're gonna free up another seventeen million
(01:03:03):
dollars in the cap for next season. But that being said,
let me give you what the depth chart looks like now.
All the Cowboy fans out there, guys now Donovan Zeraku
at end and the switch will be at right end,
(01:03:27):
Dante Fowler and Jadeveon Clowney, which is decent.
Speaker 3 (01:03:35):
They're they're good tacklers.
Speaker 2 (01:03:38):
But Kenny Clark, Quinn Williams, and O c Igazua are
guys that have a that's a very good rotation at
defensive tackle.
Speaker 3 (01:03:50):
They all do different things.
Speaker 2 (01:03:54):
And with that being said, it makes the move for
Logan Wilson look great because now you have another outstanding
linebacker and the Marion Overshawan coming back. That's gonna really
help out the guys. Schamar James and and Samborne, uh
(01:04:18):
the and in Marshawn Kneeland.
Speaker 3 (01:04:20):
They're just not good guys. There's no other way to
put it.
Speaker 2 (01:04:24):
The Cowboys money strapped, cash strap, so they they had
to get what they can get. And d Ryan Bland,
I don't know if he's I don't know if he's
he's saving itself or he's he's just that he's in
(01:04:44):
a bad situation and he's always, you know, kind of
got to be the savior. Well, he don't have to
be a savior now. There's gonna be pressure and he's
gonna have to go and eat now. And the Cowboys
have been salivating over the fact that uh savonn Revel Jr.
(01:05:04):
Is healthy now and he and Overshan will come back
and be about real intricate pieces. Uh in the second
side of this season. Uh, the Cowboys are hurt so
bad in the secondary Donovan Wilson, Marquise Bell and uh
Elijah Clark Like.
Speaker 3 (01:05:25):
Now they got two guys on I R.
Speaker 2 (01:05:28):
And Malik Hooker and Trayvon Diggs and Josh Butler, like
they you got three of your starters and you got
guys that are that came up from the practice squad.
Speaker 3 (01:05:41):
It is what it is.
Speaker 2 (01:05:42):
But at least the defensive line got better and it's
gonna make those guys jobs in the secondary easier. I
was I was happy with what the Cowboys did.
Speaker 3 (01:05:55):
What say you?
Speaker 1 (01:05:57):
I'm still confused about why they did it, though, I mean,
at this point, what are you doing? Do you believe
that you have enough now that all of a sudden
you're about to go on this epic run to become
the team of destiny.
Speaker 3 (01:06:15):
I just don't see it.
Speaker 1 (01:06:17):
I don't see the Cowboys putting themselves in a position.
Speaker 3 (01:06:22):
I mean, you know as well as I do.
Speaker 1 (01:06:24):
If the Cowboys can do anything positive, I'm four.
Speaker 3 (01:06:29):
I don't know how positive this is because you pretty much.
Speaker 1 (01:06:37):
Are you trying to make a serious search to start
for the rest of the season, or do you honestly
believe that the season is over and you're trying to
build for next year.
Speaker 2 (01:06:46):
I think that they're trying to build for next year.
But being a fanatic, being a fan I live in
it right now and I can see the Cowboys.
Speaker 3 (01:06:59):
You go, I'm going through the whiteboard right now.
Speaker 2 (01:07:02):
They need to run, they need to run three defensive tackles,
two ends, two linebackers for.
Speaker 3 (01:07:11):
Guys in the secondary. Just create pressure.
Speaker 2 (01:07:15):
You don't know who's coming, who's gonna drop like you
have to do some Buddy Ryan type defense, not a
forty six bear defense, but maybe a five to two defense.
Speaker 3 (01:07:30):
If you can go five men on the line of scrimmage.
Speaker 2 (01:07:34):
With having a double team one of those you got
a double team Clark, or you got a double team Williams.
Speaker 3 (01:07:41):
There's a mitchmatch.
Speaker 2 (01:07:43):
Now you gotta force your running back to stay in
and block and chip.
Speaker 3 (01:07:47):
How many teams run five man front? Not many. The
Eagles do it every now and then, yeah, because but
they don't do it fastively.
Speaker 2 (01:07:57):
They don't do it because teams spread out and you
always need another corner.
Speaker 3 (01:08:00):
You always need a nickel in there.
Speaker 2 (01:08:03):
And but even if the Cowboys did go with a
nickel situation, they still can have Agent Zero play the
linebacker because of his speed, play in the middle, and
he can be the one that takes on the tight
ends and backs out of the backfield. And you have
an extra corner for three wide receiver sets and you
(01:08:27):
just do umbrella.
Speaker 3 (01:08:28):
You just have this. Have people hang in the zone.
Speaker 2 (01:08:32):
But if you have an elite pass rush, you don't
have to blitz. And I think that now with Williams,
that's gonna give the Cowboys, uh, that one guy that
you have to double team. And now Kenny Clark and
OC and the Deaveon Clowney should try to go eat
(01:08:53):
they should. They should really be happy that they got
a guy that's gonna get double team. Well, the only
way that that's gonna happen for any of them, because
you know, Jadavian's on a one one year deal. A
lot of these guys are playing for a contract year,
but they're in the wrong system.
Speaker 1 (01:09:09):
This year they are. They're getting exposed. They haven't stopped anybody.
So we thought Kenny Clark was here to stop the run.
He has not, but they brought in reinforcement. Okay, Quinny
Williams only has one sack all year. It's a different yeah,
(01:09:29):
him and our guy OCI. But now we'll see what
ends up happening. Now, go and see who gets to
the quarterback. We're gonna close out the show and send
you to Dan Patrick. M LB Awards are about to
be given out. We're gonna go through the list of
finalists and cast our vote right here on the morning
(01:09:52):
kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone.
Speaker 3 (01:09:56):
What another great show.
Speaker 1 (01:09:58):
That's right, we had another great one right here on
sports Radio AM thirteen one hundred. The Zone right here
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred is a mark Henry
Mike Harball Hart. I want to thank Danny Davis for
hopping on with us and breaking it all down. Texas
men's basketball came up a little bit short last night,
but I definitely like what I see. Texas football ranked
(01:10:22):
in the initial college football count down Top twenty five.
They come in at number eleven. Got everything ahead of them.
You heard coach Sark talk about that multiple times. Everything
is still in front of them. Big matchup this weekend
were for Georgia and Mississippi State.
Speaker 3 (01:10:43):
The Longhorns get to sit at.
Speaker 1 (01:10:44):
Home and watch and relax for a little bit, but
they can do some scouting. You can do it yourself
when you get a chance to watch those games. I
want to talk Major League Baseball real quick. The season's over.
The yay to the Dodgers can congratulations with the big victory,
but now it is time to give.
Speaker 3 (01:11:04):
Out the awards.
Speaker 1 (01:11:05):
The awards seasons are going to be done by the thirteenth,
and that's when the MVP will be given out. The
American League, the finalists are Jose Ramirez of the Guardians,
Aaron Judge of the Yankees, and Cal Riley for the Mariners.
That or will be given out at six o'clock on
(01:11:28):
November the thirteenth. For the National League, you've got show
hail Tyny, Kyle Schwarber, and Juan Soto. Juan Soto gets
in there. That award to be given out at the
same time. Cy Young, Hunter Brown, Hunter Brown represent the
h represent the Astros, Garrett Kroshet represent the Red Sox,
(01:11:49):
and Tariq's schoobl It will be representing the Tigers. In
the National League, you got Paul Skeins, Yamamoto and Chris
Sanchez of the Phillies. Those are the finalists for the
National League. Cy Young Rookie of the Year in the
American League, Nick Kurtz, the first baseman for the Athletics,
(01:12:13):
the shortstop for the Athletics, Jacob Wilson, and Roman Anthony
of the Boston Red Sox. National League, you got Drake
Baldwin catcher for the Braves, Caleb Durbin for the Brewers,
and Cad Horton, former Oklahoma Sooner. Cade Horton as the
Rookie of the Year for the Cubbies. John Schneider, Stephen
(01:12:37):
Voy and Dan Wilson Blue Jays, Guardians and Mariners are
finalists for a L Manager of the Year. Finalists for
n L, Pat Murphy of the Brewers, Rob Thompson of
the Phillies, and Terry Francona of the Reds. Terry Francona
always finds a way to be into that conversation because
he's so dog one good. Mookie Betts has been named
(01:12:59):
the the Roberto Clemente Award winner. Congratulations to Mookie. And
of course they've given out the gold gloves all over
the place, and I've been very, very impressed with what
I've seen from this year. Three Cubs get it in
the National Leagues. Nick Horner, Ian Happ and Pete Crow
(01:13:21):
Armstrong are the gold Glove winners for the Cubs. For
the American League, there wasn't a lot of names that
I was shocked with. I love the fact that Bobby
Witt Junior gets a Gold Glove for the shortstop for
the Kansas City Royals. Two Braves, I mean two Boston
Red Sox get it. But another Houston Astros, Mauricio Dubac
(01:13:45):
is now the utility gold Glove winner in the big leagues.
Speaker 3 (01:13:50):
So good stuff there. And you have any Longhorns that
are notable.
Speaker 13 (01:13:54):
That no man there all right now, I mean, wait,
there will be something that get an opportunity to do that,
but not right now.
Speaker 6 (01:14:08):
Let's not do that.
Speaker 3 (01:14:12):
Yeah, we didn't want to put that out there.
Speaker 1 (01:14:17):
This is not good, so it didn't turn out that way.
But we talked about it. We've gone through this multiple times.
Who is your thought for American League m v P.
Speaker 3 (01:14:30):
Oh my gosh.
Speaker 1 (01:14:32):
I'm gonna go with Judge because his numbers are just
through the roof. I know everybody wants cal Riley, but
I'm going with Judge. National League, I'm gonna go with
show Hey. I mean, it's just a man, It's I'm
a Yankee fan.
Speaker 2 (01:14:46):
But I'm still gonna I'm gonna go with Riley, okay,
and in course Showy okay, And I'm going with cy Young.
Speaker 1 (01:14:53):
I'm gonna take Threek schoobl the picture for the Tigers,
Paul Skeins. I want him to win it for the
Pirates because he was the only reason why the pirates
were ever in any game.
Speaker 3 (01:15:05):
Marcus, who you got? I got cal Riley, o'tani.
Speaker 10 (01:15:12):
And I'm pretty much in the greegreients with you with
uh with schemes and school. Yeah, it's just I don't
really see any competition. I got Rileigh, even though that's
the only competition. It's Judge our Riley. I got Riley
because I always see them wanting to give it to
somebody different.
Speaker 2 (01:15:33):
It's not it's not that I wanted to go to
somebody different. I wanted to go to a guy that
stepped up and did something that that's never been done.
He did things that have never been done.
Speaker 3 (01:15:49):
I was.
Speaker 5 (01:15:50):
I was more or less referring to the voters.
Speaker 10 (01:15:52):
The voters usually try to think outside the box when
they go to the you know, when they vote on MVPs.
Speaker 3 (01:16:00):
Yeah, they did a horrible DIBB voting.
Speaker 2 (01:16:02):
Like those the voters, they're rotting, you know, if you're
gonna go with that philosophy, Like I'm being a fan
and I'm being critical of my guy, Like Judge did
not step up in the playoffs like everybody else they
stepped up in the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (01:16:22):
Riley was hitting dingers, but it doesn't count.
Speaker 1 (01:16:25):
Regular season award, regular season.
Speaker 3 (01:16:29):
Award get to the playoffs since he got.
Speaker 1 (01:16:32):
Look, he won the MVP in twenty twenty two, he
won it in twenty four and he had a better
season than both of those years, where he had fifty
three home runs for the fourth time in his career,
led the league in runs scored with one thirty seven.
He had one hundred and twenty four walks, and was
the major league leader in all three slash categories.
Speaker 3 (01:16:55):
So he was pretty special.
Speaker 1 (01:16:56):
Kyle Riley unbelievable year, becoming the seventh player to reach
the sixty home run plateau in a single year, also
adding one hundred and twenty five RBIs he did well.
The one thing that I give him is he caught
over a thousand thousand innings behind the play that's the
part that's the most impressive. And he shattered the home
(01:17:18):
runs for the catcher and switch hitter when he was
that big of a deal for them.
Speaker 3 (01:17:25):
So I get it. I'm a fan of it. I
told you.
Speaker 1 (01:17:29):
Originally I was all on it. I was pushing for
the big dupper to get it. But the reality of it,
when you go back and you take a look back
and see what Aaron Judge was able to do was
unreal because he keeps getting better.
Speaker 3 (01:17:46):
He keeps getting better.
Speaker 1 (01:17:48):
He hit that many home runs and still batted three
thirty one.
Speaker 3 (01:17:51):
He won the batting type.
Speaker 2 (01:17:54):
I mean, I'm a fan, No Sully, I want him.
I just want him to do it in the playoff.
Go back and look at his playoff numbers. You might
be surprised.
Speaker 3 (01:18:04):
You might be surprised.
Speaker 1 (01:18:06):
I want to thank Mark Henry, I want to thank Marcus,
but most importantly, I want to thank you the people
for always tuning in and spreading the good word of
the morning Kickoff. Tell your friends, and tell five friends,
and even tell your enemies. Come and tune in and
kick it with us because we always have a good time.
And just remember this, folks will be better tomorrow. Don't
(01:18:26):
believe everything you see, because even salt looks like sugar.
Speaker 3 (01:18:29):
By the way, Danny, this hat came from my in laws.
Thank you Nanny and Poppy. Peace.
