up field thirty thirty five.
Speaker 4 (00:30):
We go forty He goes to that field, forget it,
fucks forget about it. Say good night to it seventy
five yards on the first play from sprintage Ryan wing
Go toss it.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
Again, Pistol said, and.
Speaker 4 (00:44):
And trouble in the balls loops on the turf. Colin
Simmons may have it. He pulled the ball out from
diego Pavia. Colin Simmons a fucking recovery.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
At the comminor twenty nine play action, Manning rolls right
looking the throw, still looking, still looking, rolls right here.
Speaker 4 (00:58):
The boundary fires from the against touchdown Texas see Jay
Baxter secret in the zone a six yard catch full
of score first and go from the four tallest left.
Wiser cuts inside, took the line touchdown Texas Quinn Travan
Weisner piles it in from the four yards out and
Prey extends it to a three score lead for Texas.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
Shotgun stamped Manning hads it looks fires for the insoe
touch touchdown in at Moseley Arch. Manning took a huge
blow but delivered a strike to Moseley, his third touchdown.
Cats of the season are chops up happily and the
Long Orange are back up three scores, so they'll stamp
in one time and that'll do it here with thirty
(01:42):
seconds to go, fight to the finish, Long Orange wearing
command of this game for better than three and a
half quarters before the late surge my Vanderbilt, and that's
gonna do it, and the Longhorns will survive and Onside
kick the temp again at the end of the football game,
(02:04):
and there's still some chippiness and there's still some talking
going on, but the thing, the cooverheads will prevail and
the Longhorns will get the win. Texas wins its four
straight game and they go to seven and two with
an open date in front of them, which it looks
(02:25):
like they'll need to try to heal up some of
the injuries and the receiving.
Speaker 5 (02:28):
End in the secondary rooms before they head to Affens,
Georgia two weeks from today to take on the Georgia Bulldogs.
Speaker 1 (02:41):

The Dodgers win the World Series.
Speaker 1 (03:12):
In epic fashion. Another week, another coach gets fired. We
have Longhorn legend friend Harris joining us at eight seventeen
as the Texas women tip off the.
Speaker 6 (03:24):
Season tonight at Moody.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
Also, the Dallas Cowboys are playing Monday Night Football. I
am your host, Mike Harballhart my co host, his AWWE
Hall of Famer and recognized as the world's strongest man.
He is d Mark Henry Good morning, Austin, And of
course we've got Marcus behind the boards. And if you
want to be a part of the show, all you
got to do is text the word Texas follow by
your message to eight one five three zero.
Speaker 6 (03:49):
Standard data and message rates may apply.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
That's the word Texas followed by your message to eight
one five three zero. Standard data and message rates may apply. Also,
if you want to leave a voicemail and voice your
opinion on some things that we're talking about, because I
know people already do have that, all you got to
do is use that talkback feature on the new and
improved and always free iHeartRadio app. If it's good enough,
(04:15):
you might even hear it on air. But what you
did here on air was the Texas Longhorns getting that
victory thirty four to thirty one on Saturday. But listen
here against the number nine ranked at the time Commodores
from Vanderbilt. But here's the biggest thing for me when
it comes to this game. That game wasn't even close.
(04:38):
Texas put on a dominant, dominant performance early and often,
and you could see the frustration starting to build with
the Vanderbilt Commodores. They could not get anything going. The
defensive pass rush that we thought we were going to
see finally has shown up. And it's been showing up
(05:00):
weekend and week out over these last four weeks. It's
been an impressive, pressive defensive performance from the guys up front.
Speaker 6 (05:11):
You see Ethan Burke getting paid.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
Ethan Burke is about to make a lot of money
for what he's been doing these last couple of weeks.
You also got a chance on the offensive side of
the ball to see some changes and some different wrinkles
on that offensive line. And dare I say this might
have been their best game blocking up front. Maybe some
changes were done, but this was an opportunity for the
(05:36):
Texas Longhorns on the stage, to be at home for
the first time in forty two days in front of
one hundred and two thousand screaming fans.
Speaker 6 (05:46):
This was a big win for the Texas Longhorn.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
It not only was it a big win, hard, it
was it was medicine. It was necessary for Texas to
show the world on a big stage.
Speaker 6 (05:58):
No, they're not.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
Team that, they're actually starting to get it. And you
look at the last six quarters and I say that
because Texas went and overtime the fourth quarter in the
overtime last week. I think they woke up and realized, Oh,
this is our identity, this is who we are, this
is the way we have to fight. And if they
(06:23):
continue at then man, this could be an interesting season.
Speaker 1 (06:27):
Well, and that's the other part of it. People have
been down on Texas for whatever reason. Maybe it was
because you were the preseason number one. Maybe it was
because you went and dropped out of the top twenty
five for the first time for being a number one
ranked team. But here you are continuing the battle and
continuing to show up. As we talked about, Texas has
done an unbelievable job to get to seven and two
(06:50):
and four to one in sec play. Coach Sark always
speaks about the fact of how everything is in front
of you and they continue to hit those marks and
are ch Manning has grown up right before our very eyes.
We'll talk a little bit more about that, but here
is coach start talking about the victory in his opening
statement on Saturday.
Speaker 7 (07:11):
Alrighty, I'm really really.
Speaker 8 (07:13):
Proud of our team, proud of the way we came
out to play right from the start, and you know,
obviously seventeen to nothing in the first quarter with a
you know, anytime you score on the first play of
the game, that's always nice.
Speaker 7 (07:27):
And then to create a turnover.
Speaker 8 (07:28):
Defensively, you know, we didn't really capitalize with a touchdown,
but we got the field goal, and then to turn
around one more drive in the first quarter to score
to get up seventeen to nothing. I thought the offense
played really efficient football tonight.
Speaker 6 (07:43):
Or today, and.
Speaker 8 (07:45):
That was going to be key against their style of offense,
you know, where they can minimize possessions and so you know,
just average urs per play on first down I thought
was really effective for US seven to eleven on third down,
you know, no turnovers, no sacks, and and really scored
on our first six drives of the game, with our
seventh drive resulting in a missfield goal, and then the
(08:08):
eighth drive was one right there at the end. So
when you just talk about, you know, efficiency in playing
the game, I thought the offense did that.
Speaker 9 (08:15):
You know.
Speaker 8 (08:15):
Defensively, you know, we played well. You know, you get
six sacks, you get a turnover, you get ten TFLs.
It's just a little unfortunate we gave up a couple
of those plays late, but but you know, we'll get
some of that recifive. We'll get that fixed and we'll
get some guys back healthy. You know, we obviously we
got a little banged up today. You Wingo hurt his thumb.
(08:36):
We were down a couple of receivers, other receivers in
the first half. You know, obviously Michael taff wasn't able
to go. We lost Julani McDonald very early in the game,
so that put Derek Williams and Xavier Fils to Me
in there, and then ultimately that had Janah Williams out there.
So guys stepped up, and that's what happens in November.
But all in all, was great coming back home, getting
(08:57):
a getting a big win in conference play, really almost
a playoff type game in November, and now we get
to buy which is going to be needed for us
before we finish up with the last three games slate.
Speaker 7 (09:11):
So it was a great win.
Speaker 8 (09:12):
Appreciate Longhorn Nation, Appreciate their support showing.
Speaker 7 (09:16):
Up the way that it did.
Speaker 8 (09:16):
It's always tough eleven Am to do that, but they
showed up. They were a factor in the game, and
it was a great win for uce Hard Drum.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
I'm I want to give you a little credit. You
told me to back it down, like, not the expectation,
but the fact that I loved this Texas secondary and
when they lost a few people, it got got a
little shoddy back there. And now you're playing all these
young people and people are criticizing the secondary.
Speaker 6 (09:46):
Now before the season didn't big.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
Our world strongest takes and our hard knock life is
that the strength was how much depth they had in
the secondary. We did a show almost on all of the
young people and what we expected out of the guys
that came back. I think it's too soon to be
casting that judgment.
Speaker 6 (10:11):
You told me that they.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
Write that stuff just because they want to incite my riot. Yep,
And I'm trying to not let it bother me. But
it's hard.
Speaker 6 (10:23):
Man.
Speaker 1 (10:24):
Well, the thing is, too when you look at this team,
you understand who they are.
Speaker 6 (10:29):
They are a young team.
Speaker 1 (10:31):
Coach Sark will talk about it a little bit about
how they're the youngest team in college football.
Speaker 6 (10:37):
And each week you get.
Speaker 1 (10:39):
Better because you're playing reps, you're getting an opportunity to
see game speed. You're getting a chance to get acclimated
to the speed of the game and understanding your role
the entire time. So as we said at the very
beginning of the year, people were all over Arch and
I said, I guarantee by the time the season is over,
(11:02):
you're not gonna remember that kid that played against Ohio State,
who didn't play that bad. Texas lost by seven points.
They were in the ballgame. But you start looking at it,
and we'll get into the numbers in a minute. But
he's growing up against competition that are raped, and he's
continuing to play well, and he's getting quick game, quick game,
(11:26):
quick game, which is turning into happiness for their forma exactly.
We're just getting started on a victory Monday edition of
The Morning Kickoff. We'll hear from Arts, We'll hear from
Ethan Burke and Anthony Hill at seven thirty four in
the Hard Knocks Life, we'll get my take on the
old line. And oh yeah, the Dodgers win the World
(11:47):
Series right here on the Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back to a victory
Monday edition of the Morning Kickoff right here on Sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Mark Mike Carball Harg
and of course we've got our guy Marcus holding it
down coming up in the next segment, I'll go in
(12:07):
depth on my thoughts with what Arch was able to
do this past weekend and a significant change that has
happened for this Texas football team. As we know that
beginning of the week Arch was in concussion protocol and
he felt like he was going to be able to go,
but the fans were still trying to figure it out.
(12:30):
You have the protocol and if decisions are always made
up by the doctors, if the doctors feel like he
passed those tests, then he was definitely going to be
able to be on the field. Well, game time came around,
he was there, and he went out and had a
spectacular performance. And here is Arch on what he had
(12:53):
to say about his performance.
Speaker 9 (12:55):
I think just playing games, experience having some bad games,
and I think the offense is starting to click a
little bit. We got to continue to press and finish games.
But probably the way we played today, you're the concussion help.
Speaker 6 (13:12):
Into it.
Speaker 9 (13:12):
And yeah, I think it starts with the od line.
They played really well to day. Receivers made plays and
you know that makes it a little bit easier on me.
It's been a long month, tell you that, but I
think we've all grown closer together and helped us in
the long run. We just got to continue to press forward.
This month of November is gonna be no joke. So
just got to continue to get better and stay connected.
Speaker 6 (13:34):
Just trying to take it one play.
Speaker 9 (13:35):
At a time and then hopefully we went at the end.
But just continue to be a good leader. I'm probably
still going to get showed out. I mean, you see
that hell mare I threw it in the freaking student section.
Speaker 6 (13:47):
There's lots of work on. But got to continue to
get better.
Speaker 1 (13:50):
He definitely I was like, who is he throwing that
ball to?
Speaker 6 (13:54):
Hey? But I like his personality. He's the best.
Speaker 2 (13:56):
I love the fact that he's so deffrecating in a
funny way, not like, you know, being down on hisself.
Speaker 6 (14:02):
Yeah like that.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
That shows maturity right there, because I was not that
maturity at nineteen, I'm tell you right now.
Speaker 6 (14:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (14:11):
Well he's he's a good dude. And the way that
he goes about his business, he's very you can tell
he's humble, but he gets excited.
Speaker 6 (14:21):
You know.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
They showed a pregame when he was getting ready to
go out and he's like, we're black at the blinking crib.
We're getting to go out on the crib. So he
was excited to be back home. He went out there,
played well, stood in and took some hits on some
big throws.
Speaker 6 (14:37):
I mean, he had no fear.
Speaker 1 (14:39):
There was a couple of times he ran and then
he got hit the first time and then it looked
like I was like, oh my god. Then he puts
his hands up like yeah, I'm here, I'm here.
Speaker 6 (14:48):
So we sat together watching the game.
Speaker 2 (14:50):
Yeah, And at one point in the second half, when
he threw the ball to Mosley, he got hit in
the mouth. I mean, there's never been another quarterback that
ever played this game that stood in there and was
the model of consistency like he was on that play.
He took it right to the grill, face mask to face,
(15:10):
mass stood in there.
Speaker 6 (15:12):
He is not afraid.
Speaker 1 (15:14):
No he's not. He's not, and he's been. He's a talented,
talented quarterback. Over the last two games, he's fifty four
of seventy nine with a sixty eight percent completion rate
in six touchdowns, no turnovers. He's playing really good football.
And again I believe the quick game has helped him
(15:34):
so much, getting the ball in and out of his hands,
making the right decision. He's even prolonging plays to extend
him so he can get a touchdown to CJ.
Speaker 6 (15:47):
Baxter.
Speaker 1 (15:47):
His ability to scramble has been really, really good. But
somebody else who's been playing really well has been Ethan Burke,
and Ethan Burke gave some credit to his coaching staff
after that big performance.
Speaker 6 (16:01):
Yeah, no, that was good.
Speaker 10 (16:03):
I think we had six sacks. Someone told me they
gave up seven on the year. So it's just the
credit to the coaches putting us in the right spot
and creating the right plan and helping us out throughout
the week and us playing as one as a defensive line.
Speaker 1 (16:19):
And the beautiful part about it, they've had a four
game sec winning streak and they recorded twenty three sacks
thirty seven tackles for loss. Colin Simmons is now with
six and a half sacks. He had a sack and
a strip fumble recovery right after he made that. Then
(16:39):
you have Anthony Hill Junior who's got four, and now
Ethan Burke has been getting after it as well. For
Saturday night they or Saturday morning, Ethan Burke had two sacks,
three tackles for loss. Colin Simmons had a sack and
one and a half tackles for loss. Anthony Hill, Trey Moore,
and Brad Spence each had a sack. So these guys
(17:02):
are understanding. Brad Spence is becoming a major part of
the success of this Texas defense. But they did not
go without a breakdown and Anthony Hill when the touchdown
was to Eli Stowers down the sideline. It was a miscommunication.
And you heard Sark at the very beginning. He talked
about Michael tapping out, then Julani being out, and those
(17:27):
injuries mounting on the back end. So the communication has
to go with Anthony Hill, and he said that he
will take the fault for that.
Speaker 6 (17:35):
Yeah, it starts. It starts with me and some of
the linebackers.
Speaker 11 (17:38):
Man, we got to do a bitter job of communicating.
Speaker 1 (17:40):
It goes down to communicating is betting able to execute
the game plan.
Speaker 6 (17:43):
So I'll take responsibility there for that. Man, we got
to do a good job to execute it and getting
a call around.
Speaker 1 (17:48):
So that's really what it was, because you can't let
that guy the tight end run up the sideline like that.
Speaker 2 (17:53):
No, not undebated, not nobody bumping him off the line
or going with the drag like there was just nobody
there up and two people went with the same guy
and you knew that was we remember we three years ago,
we used to see that very commonly. Yeah, and now
we're spoiled. One play we criticized. I'm not criticizing them.
(18:14):
They made a mistake, they realized that, they owned up
to it.
Speaker 6 (18:18):
But they won the game. Guys. Yeah, so let's let's
keep it moving.
Speaker 2 (18:24):
All this hyperbolic I'm so glad you talked to me
last week and said, Mark, they trying to get you.
Just because we don't do shock radio, don't mean everybody
else is not going to Yo.
Speaker 6 (18:37):
Man, I'm trying. I'm better today, right are you?
Speaker 1 (18:42):
Because it seems like you're thinking that people are hyperbolic.
They're not hyperbolic about it. They understand what has happened.
Texas won the game. They could the game should have been,
shouldn't have been that close. No, just winning the prevent
defense and that prevents you from winning. So if you
get out there, you go out there and keep your
(19:03):
all gas. No breaks needs to be that, and it
needs to be the same on the defense to depot
in a for real I mean, there was some that
game could have been a lot we would have been
It should have been a lot worse. I mean getting
down to that and coming up with an on side
kick situation. It should have never gotten to that. And
(19:23):
coach Sark is gonna talk about it, and that's what
he said. When he goes back in, they're gonna go
and look at the film. It is good, bad, and ugly.
Monday at the press conference, speaking of the press conference,
that can be heard right here on sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone and always free on the iHeartRadio app.
His press conference starts at eleven am today, not eleven thirty.
(19:47):
His press conference will start at eleven am, but you
can hear it all right here on sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone.
Speaker 2 (19:54):
You think he learned from doing that because he just
said that he was gonna make changes.
Speaker 1 (20:00):
Well, I think it's not just him as well as
the defense played early in the game for three quarters
it was thirty four to ten. It was thirty four
to ten, and you knew that he was going to
be throwing the ball a lot. So when you play
soft coverages, you're gonna get those yards. You saw it
(20:23):
in the NFL yesterday, people playing off and they were
missing tackles, and so those types of things continue to happen.
Speaker 6 (20:31):
But for me, I.
Speaker 1 (20:33):
Enjoyed the fact that Texas won the game and was
in a dominant place early because this is a Vanderbilt
team that we.
Speaker 6 (20:40):
Talked about all week about Diego Pavia.
Speaker 1 (20:42):
We talked a lot about what he brings to the
table for this team. They weren't expect They're not a
team that should be able to come from behind to
beat you.
Speaker 6 (20:51):
They're not built like that. And so when Texas got out.
Speaker 1 (20:54):
Front and started really putting it on them, that game
should have been been forty four fifty four. It could
have been a lot worse than what it was, and
it kind of got stuck in a rut.
Speaker 6 (21:08):
Now theyre d one team.
Speaker 1 (21:10):
They made some adjustments, they did some things differently. But
for Texas, I know that coach Shark is looking at
that film going we left a lot of meat on
that ball.
Speaker 6 (21:19):
Hey, can I give a special shout out to the fans.
Speaker 2 (21:21):
Though the dk R was loud, Oh yeah, old Rockets
starting starting office.
Speaker 6 (21:26):
You know you go that long with I having a
home game? They were ready, Yeah, I think they were.
Speaker 1 (21:31):
They were more ready to come and see us over
at Beebo Boulevard on Winship Circle, hook them hang out
early in the morning. But but you're right, when they
got on that field, it was all about business and
it was impressive and they they got it quick, that's right,
got it, got the ball and went down there and
scored on first play. People adn't even got to the
(21:52):
seats yet, and they were already hearing the junior was
like the cannon was going on. When we come back,
we're gonna continue the conversations. I got up shout out
to my man Arch Manning, and of course I got
to give a shout out to Sark because they made
one move that seemed to be the key to success
on the offensive side of the ball. We'll talk about
(22:12):
it right here on the morning kickoff on Sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred. This's make sure you're tuned in at
eight seventeen as we'll have lifetime Longhorn Fran Harris joining
us to talk college basketball, NBA basketball, WNBA, everything basketball.
Because basketball starts today, it's already tipped off. They've got
(22:33):
a marathon going on ESPN and YouTube. Yeah, YouTube is
still working for some people, but I've got to figure
way to get that taken out. But basketball is here
for the likings. But my take today is going to
be more about what I saw from this football game
(22:57):
in regards to arch Manning, the offensive line and of
course the defensive line of what they've been able to do,
But it's more about the offensive side of the ball.
Mark alluded to it earlier when the questions were being
asked about coach Sark in the offensive coordinator position and
should you bring somebody in you know?
Speaker 6 (23:19):
And I kept saying too.
Speaker 1 (23:21):
I kept saying, number one, make a quick game, get
the ball out of his hands. But the other part
of it is the scheme was there, the shots weren't
being hit, and there was some missing, and he didn't
have time. It's amazing what a quarterback can do when
he has time to throw the football. I went through
the stats over the last two games for arch Manning
(23:44):
and they're pretty remarkable. Sixty eight percent completion rate, six
hundred and seventy four yards, six touchdowns, and two SEC wins.
But not only Texas is sitting at one in the SEC.
There was a hiccup at Florida, But what did we
(24:05):
see in the hiccup at Florida. We saw arch Manning
keeping the team engaged. We saw arch Manning keeping the
team a lot. So there was an opportunity for this
team to be able to win that ball game. But
arch Manning was asked, of course, Sark was asked about
arch and then how he seems light years from where
(24:27):
he was earlier and with these statement wins.
Speaker 7 (24:32):
I do think he's grown up.
Speaker 8 (24:33):
I mean, he just he just looks so much more mature,
you know, he looks so much more poised, he looks
so much more confident, and he's got a lot more
trust in those guys around him.
Speaker 7 (24:45):
I think that continuity of playing with him more and
more and more.
Speaker 8 (24:49):
Just his ability to manage the game and change protections
and work the shot clock and take the shots when
they're there and check the ball down when the checkdowns
were there. There was a it was a really big play.
I guess that would have been late in the third quarter.
You know, we called a double move. I think it
was to Parker on their sidelines and it wasn't there,
(25:10):
and he checked the ball down to Trey Wisner, which
probably doesn't seem like much, but I think it was
a game about nine yards and like, I don't know
if Arch was going to do that a month ago.
You know, I think he might have just let it
rip to Parker. It might have fallen incomplete. But his
ability to get through reads and there's another critical third down.
You know, he gets to about his fourth read and
(25:30):
hits Emmett Mosley on a backside indcut for a critical
third down conversion. And you know he's allowed to do
that because the protection was good. But I don't know
if we were doing that, you know, I don't know
if we were even doing that three weeks ago. And
so you know, he's he's really growing up before our eyes,
and he's making great decisions and he's throwing the ball accurately,
and that's why you're you know, you're you're seven eleven
(25:53):
and the third down and you're you know, I think
at one point he was like Comte completed like eighteen
and nineteen passes.
Speaker 7 (25:58):
You know, so very proud of him. You know, it's
been a long year.
Speaker 8 (26:01):
Uh, he's been through a lot, and so for him
to have some of the success he's having right now
is you know, he deserves it. You know, as far
as the statement win goes, they're all statement wins right now.
You know, we put ourselves in this position. You know,
when when you when you lose, when you lose your
conference opener, it's one game at a time at that point.
And and you know, you know last year in this conference,
(26:25):
we went seven and one, and that was the best
record in the regular season in the SEC. Six and
two got you into the SEC championship game. And I
got told the team, I don't know six and two
is going to be good enough this year. You know,
I think seven and one's got to be the deal.
And the only way to go seven and one is
to win the next one. And that was our focus
this week. Like I said, I addressed this, I addressed
(26:47):
what the month of November was going to be with
the team. But then we got right into why this
game is so important If the month of November is
going to be that important, and that's going to be
the next game too, And and we've got to pour
all of our energy, focus and intent into the next game.
But hey, we all know what the goals are for
the season, so we can we can be real with
them about that.
Speaker 1 (27:09):
Main thing about that is what he said about Arch
being light years from where he was.
Speaker 6 (27:13):
But you know how that became a part of it.
Speaker 1 (27:16):
He had time, and so coach Sark was asked about
how he characterized the offensive line and protecting Arch and
creating a running game because that's how.
Speaker 6 (27:25):
He can do play action. Yeah.
Speaker 7 (27:27):
No, I thought they were I thought they were very effective.
Speaker 6 (27:30):
You know.
Speaker 8 (27:31):
You know, I thought Arch had this was the best
protection he's gotten all year. And you know that's a
credit to everybody. Obviously, we made a little adjustment moving
Cole Hudson to guard uh and playing Connor at center.
I thought that solidified some things, give us a little
bit more experience in there. Thought our tackles did a
nice job, and I thought Arch, to his credit, helped them.
(27:52):
You know, he did some things in protection to pick
some things up to allow us to throw it down
the field. But but you know, it allowed him to
get through reads. You know, when you can get to
your second third reads in a progression, that means your
protection is pretty good and then you know, run game wise,
you know, we're making some progress. You know, I thought
we made a ton of progress with the offensive line.
Speaker 7 (28:13):
You know, we didn't have negative runs.
Speaker 8 (28:15):
Who had a couple, But I think there's more there
for us and we continue, we can continue to improve
with that. But proud of our offensive line. You know,
theyre you know again, you're you're not a finished product.
In September and October. We can continue to improve and
that group is an example that they're getting better.
Speaker 1 (28:31):
And he talked about the running game about how you know,
getting better. They got one hundred yards in this matchup.
You know, it's been a while since Texas have felt
that good about it arch and his completion percentage was
through the roof a thirteen. He had thirteen point one
yards per completion, so in three passing touchdowns.
Speaker 6 (28:51):
So he did his part.
Speaker 1 (28:53):
But the thing about it is now the people are
starting to say, oh, this is the quarterback that we
thought we were going to see.
Speaker 6 (28:59):
You dog on right. But it takes time.
Speaker 1 (29:01):
I mean, you got to figure out a way to
get things done. And what he was able to do
was had time to throw the football, He moved in
the pocket, he would step up when he felt the pressure,
he would make his escape, and he found ways to
get into the end zone. So to me, this is
(29:24):
why I say be patient with these quarterbacks because the
game and the nuances are different. You look at his
connection now with emmittt Mosley, somebody who missed all summer
and is just now getting time on the field. He
is getting it so he's getting another touchdown, he's finding moments.
Jack Injuries another guy that he's starting to work with.
(29:46):
He's already had relationships with Livingstone and DeAndre Moore. But
now you look at what Ryan Niblet has been able
to do. They're finding ways to get their playmakers the ball.
And it all had happens to be because of the
quick game, good adjustment by coach Sharp, great adjustment arch Manning,
(30:08):
and of course this Texas football team now gets a
chance to heal and rest up before they go to Athens, Georgia,
their kryptonite. We gotta figure out a way to get
it done. Coming up next, we're gonna talk Major League Baseball.
They did it, folks. They dynasty is here and I
(30:29):
ain't talking.
Speaker 6 (30:29):
About the.
Speaker 1 (30:31):
Exactly. We'll talk about it right here on the morning
kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred this zone.
Speaker 7 (30:38):
Here's the O two pitch.
Speaker 1 (30:46):
You're going to come out the LA Dodgers find a
way to get it done in one of the most
epic World Series that was ever played. If you are
a fan of baseball, you enjoyed every second of the
World Series, unless you are a Toronto Blue Jay, But
(31:10):
you gotta tip your cap to that series and what
the Dodgers were able to do.
Speaker 6 (31:16):
The entire time.
Speaker 1 (31:17):
You're sitting there thinking, you gotta punch them, you gotta
finish this game out. You cannot let them in to
this moment, and that's exactly what ended up happening. You
look at this game and the moments and the people
that were involved. You see a home run by Bobbashett
his first home run to center field, and then you
(31:39):
see Max Muncy and what he was able to do
the game, just going back to back to back.
Speaker 6 (31:45):
And then a.
Speaker 1 (31:46):
Person who hadn't hit a home run in the postseason,
Miguel Rojas, hits a breaking ball out of the park
to tie the game. Will Smith is a guy that
has been the big time player for the If they
needed a big hit, Will Smith was the one who
got it for him. You look at what Yamamoto was
able to do as the starting pitch, I mean, as
(32:09):
the starting pitcher and coming in to finish the game out.
That's that's big time stuff. So he got he gets
the MVP, but I want you to hear Mookie Betts
on this double play.
Speaker 6 (32:23):
Now.
Speaker 1 (32:23):
Look, I've won three championships in my career and the
ball has come to me two of those times.
Speaker 6 (32:32):
I've also lost some World series in rookie ball.
Speaker 1 (32:35):
I've lost the World Series because I threw the ball
in the stands three times. So the boy had your
boy had a tough time. But Mookie says exactly what
I was thinking when the ball was hit to him.
And let's not forget Mookie Betts is an outfielder. He
comes back in he learns how to play shortstop by
the way he worked out with Troy to Lewiskey to
(32:57):
Texas assistant coach two be able to play shortstop and
learning the position. But he was talking to Alex Rodriguez
and Alex asked him, what was your thought when the
ball was hit to you?
Speaker 12 (33:10):
Honestly, nobody knows because they were in my head. But
I was so nervous right there. I've never been in
that situation, and I was. I was so nervous, and
I literally, as he was pitching the ball, I was
talking to myself saying, be nasty, Muke, just make a play.
Be nasty, be nasty, be nasty, And like you said,
the ball found me and I just kind of played.
Speaker 1 (33:31):
I don't know, I don't know what happened. But all
the work, all the work.
Speaker 12 (33:34):
In the backfields, it all, it all came to fruition
this season.
Speaker 6 (33:37):
Well you look at the Wizard as.
Speaker 1 (33:40):
The wizide o Smith because if you look at that play,
Mooki comes across the back and he throws an absolute
laser and hits Freddie Freeman right in the chest. That
that right there knows when you're at the big league level,
that's a big time play. And they've made two big
time plays to end the ball game Game six, the
fly ball to left field, base running malfunction on second base,
(34:05):
you have nowhere to go. You get doubled up on
the ball to left field to end the game. And
then that right there earlier in the game, bad base
running again cost you a run. So the Blue Jays
fundamental baseball is what I've always talked about. Situational baseball
is for these types of moments to win championship.
Speaker 2 (34:26):
And that dude got that, he got that warning track power,
like he threw the ball so hard. You remember when
bow would he take the ball off the wall and
nobody'd be like, oh, he got a relay. There was
no relay. Yeah, that was him throwing. That's what that
that's what that throw looked like. It looked like if
(34:49):
you don't catch it, it's gonna hit you and hurt you.
Speaker 1 (34:51):
Yeah, he let that thing go and MOOKI amazing. Muky
is a great, great athlete. And like I said, this
is his fourth championship in the big leagues and eight
seasons in the big league.
Speaker 6 (35:02):
So kudos to move. Even though he.
Speaker 1 (35:04):
Didn't play great, He didn't have a great batting performance.
He was big defensively. But Magic Johnson, you know, he
just files a way to win. And Magic is happy
for one Clayton Kershaw who is finally done with baseball
and he goes out a champion.
Speaker 2 (35:21):
But I'm happy for Kershaw to go out as a champion.
Speaker 1 (35:25):
And then I'm happy for myself because that's eighteen championship rings.
Speaker 6 (35:35):
I gotta throw that in here.
Speaker 13 (35:37):
You know, you sound like Reggie Jacksons.
Speaker 6 (35:42):
You're gonna have to put some toes.
Speaker 1 (35:46):
You're gonna have to put him on your toes, David Ortiz.
But yeah, that that right there is what it's all
about being able to have the success in Magic said it.
I mean, you look at what he's been able to
do in his career. He's finding ways to put together
great organizations to win. And the Dodgers do it once
(36:09):
again and send Clayton Kershaw off to retirement with another championship.
Speaker 6 (36:16):
That's amazing.
Speaker 2 (36:17):
I mean, to be a guy that wins one championship
is incredible. To win two. Wow, God is really showing
your favor to win three, four, yeall five up the eighteen.
Speaker 1 (36:31):
That means that you're special. And he's been in different spots.
You know, you start looking at what he's been able
to do in different areas, and I look at what
the Dodgers as a team as a whole, because a
lot of people think that you know, you're gonna get there,
and then you look across any other dugout. Don Mattingly,
(36:54):
forty years in the game does not have a World
Series ring, Donnie, Baseball does not have a World Series ring.
You look at what Vladimir Guerrero was able to do.
Junior was able to do during this playoff run. Got
paid one hundred got paid five hundred million dollars at
(37:17):
the beginning of the season.
Speaker 6 (37:19):
He played his behind him. He was well worth the money.
Speaker 1 (37:23):
He played his behind off, and he thought that he
was about to win that ring because he said if
they won the World Series, he was given it to
his dad.
Speaker 6 (37:34):
So he's thinking ahead of it all.
Speaker 1 (37:37):
So you start to understand what this looks like in
the journey of baseball. Everybody's like, oh, it's so long,
but this is the epic closure to a season. LA
Dodgers back to back World champions. Think about what we've
seen from sho Heyo Tani in his career, the numbers
(37:59):
that he's put up in being able to do that
in such a short period of time.
Speaker 2 (38:04):
Didn't you say that that money is already paid off.
Speaker 1 (38:07):
It's already paid off. It's already paid off.
Speaker 6 (38:09):
She's crazy.
Speaker 1 (38:10):
It is unreal when you think about what we've seen
when it comes to Major League Baseball and all of
these guys that are involved.
Speaker 6 (38:19):
Continues to happen.
Speaker 1 (38:20):
Man, we're just getting started for our number two is
right around the corner. Fran Harris joins us at seventeen.
But first we got to talk NFL. These quarterbacks protect
them at all costs. Right here on the morning kickoff,
on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back
to our number two of the morning kickoff right here
(38:41):
on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone and hour
number one, we talked about the Texas Longhorns handling their
business over the Vanderbilt Commodore thirty four to thirty one.
But the game truly was not even close. Texas had
a dominant performance by the defense. Arch Manning played outs.
It was all hands on deck for the Texas Longhorns
(39:05):
and they were able to pull it out. We also
got a chance to talk about the Dodgers winning the
World Series in dramatic fashion. They just find a way
to get it done, and that's what champions do. On
the call, you heard them say in order to become
the champ, you've got to beat the champ and that
is where they fail. Coming up at eight seventeen, we'll
(39:27):
have Fran Harris talking hoops as we get ready for
the basketball season. It is already tipped off across the country.
It's already started and there's games being played right now
on YouTube. There will be games on the Four Letter
Network all day long. But Texas Women will take on
(39:47):
incarnate word tonight to kick off their quest to get
back to.
Speaker 6 (39:51):
The Final four and finish it off.
Speaker 1 (39:54):
We also have the Dallas Cowboys playing tonight against the
Arizona Cardinals. Big time game for the Cowboys, so big
that all of the Four Letter Network is invaded Texas
and are in Arlington today. All their shows are being
done in Dallas, but also in the state of Texas.
(40:16):
It was rough yesterday for one CJ. Stroud. As CJ
Stroud and the Houston Texans went out there. Here's the
other thing. This is where you know you need help
on the backup row, the backup row. You said it
all year, you talked about it early. CJ does not
need to be out there running. If CJ stays in
(40:39):
this game and does not have this happen to him, are.
Speaker 4 (40:43):
Between you Struts and Lakey Thomlins again this week four
man pressure from Denver Stroud breaks contained.
Speaker 6 (40:50):
He'll run up the middle of Oh he gets popped.
Chris Abrams traded.
Speaker 7 (40:54):
Here comes a flag.
Speaker 1 (41:00):
CJ.
Speaker 14 (41:01):
Stroud got hammered to the turf at the thirty yard line.
Speaker 1 (41:06):
And if he does not have that happen, I firmly
believe that the Houston Texans would have won that game
against the Denver Broncos. That was one of my picks.
I believe that they were going to do it, just
because I hate Sean Payton, but this was an unfortunate
hit for the Texans.
Speaker 6 (41:24):
CJ.
Speaker 1 (41:24):
Stroud in concussion protocol, did not come back in the
game and they end up losing the game eighteen to
fifteen on a war.
Speaker 6 (41:33):
I told you that ego is a bad thing.
Speaker 2 (41:36):
He gained twelve pounds in all season, and he started
talking about how he wanted to run the ball more,
a little bit more, and I told you, I said,
you know what, that's great, as long as he was
gets down, get down.
Speaker 6 (41:50):
He tried.
Speaker 2 (41:51):
He tried to get down and that kid, in defense
of that kid that hit him, it wasn't a dirty hit.
Speaker 6 (41:57):
It was him hitting the back head he was running.
Speaker 2 (42:00):
He was like, I said that about Pavia hit him
and hit him off. If you want to act like
a running back, you treat him like what a running back?
And he got treated like a running back. And I
think he gonna learn a valuable listen from this.
Speaker 1 (42:13):
Well he has to because now he's in the protocol
and we'll see what ends up happening.
Speaker 6 (42:18):
There.
Speaker 1 (42:18):
Another crazy game was the Chicago Bears versus the Cincinnati Bengals.
Joe Flacco throws for four hundred and seventy yards. Joe Flacco,
all he does is try to put his team in
position for wins. And they thought they had it. And
then Caleb Williams, who quietly is bawling.
Speaker 2 (42:41):
Wood in Flaco like a couple of weeks ago, like
filling out applications for Costco.
Speaker 1 (42:46):
No, no, he didn't have to because, as Mike Tomlin
told you, Andrew Berry, the general manager of the Cleveland Browns,
figured it was cool to trade him within the division
because he knows something and we don't know. And well,
he went out and continued to put up big numbers
as I said, he was thirty one to forty seven,
(43:06):
four touchdowns, two interceptions. But Caleb Williams and his crew
doing what they do. Caleb threw for two hundred and
eighty yards, ran for five hundred and thirty and he
also caught a pass. He's been doing it all for
a takedown.
Speaker 6 (43:23):
No fifty three yards? Were you one said? Five hundred
and three?
Speaker 1 (43:30):
Yeah, Well we'll go back and find the tape, we'll
listen to it. But he was able to catch a
pass as well. He caught two passes for twenty two
yards and a touchdown. So he threw for a touch
that three touchdowns and he caught a pass for a touchdown.
But it was the fact that the defense of Cincinnati
could not stop anybody they needed one stop and they
(43:53):
end up losing the game forty seven to forty two.
Last night, the final game of the night was one
that Washington Commander fans are having a tough time with
because of the fact that there was an injury that
happened at the end of the game, that this game
was out of control. Early Seattle, one of the better teams.
(44:14):
Sam Darnold put in respect on your name, I think
you have found a home and now he is dealing
with it. But this was not good for the Washington Commanders.
Speaker 13 (44:28):
Dirty is important by Daniels to get away from the
first hit, but even better play by Drake Thomas to
stay with the elusive Washington quarterback was hurt. Jade Daniels
down and in some pain, so Daniel's going down right
away in this really injury plagued nothing going right season
(44:54):
for Washington takes another awful turn.
Speaker 6 (45:01):
Dads entangled and the arm just gets pinned.
Speaker 13 (45:06):
To the media, concerned from the athletic training staff and
everybody over there.
Speaker 6 (45:10):
And look after Jaydon Daniels out of there, he's gonna
be out for quite some time.
Speaker 1 (45:15):
Marcus Mariota will end up being the quarterback for them.
But it was a bad, bad look. They never had
a chance in this ball game. And I knew it
was gonna be bad because the first three dropbacks that
he had he had to run. So it was an awful,
awful look right there. So three dropbacks, three times he
(45:36):
had to run. He ended up running the ball ten
times for fifty one yards. But that is not what
you want from your starting quarterback. Who is fred Jilly.
He's already been hurt already this season three times, so
he's already missed three games.
Speaker 6 (45:51):
So why are you having him run? Well, it's a CJ.
Speaker 2 (45:54):
Stroud playbook, Like you want to run the ball, Like,
stop running the.
Speaker 1 (46:00):
That's his game though, that's CJ. That's that's Jayden Daniels gametting.
Speaker 6 (46:04):
Part of getting down. It should be his game.
Speaker 1 (46:07):
I agree with you one hundred percent. But he won
the Heisman Trophy because he could run. He was the
second overall pick because of his ability to run with
the football he doesn't need. I mean, you would think
he would understand that they're bigger, stronger, faster than what
you're used to seeing in college. But if he takes
if he doesn't have his legs, then what does he have?
Speaker 6 (46:30):
You know?
Speaker 1 (46:32):
So it's a it's it's an interesting dynamic. But the
folks are talking about how early similar it is to
what we've seen from from r G three as well
with his time in Washington being able to run around
and then your career get cut short because you go.
Speaker 6 (46:54):
Fred Gey, that both fred giely uh.
Speaker 1 (46:57):
Another big game yesterday that everyone was looking forward two
was the Kansas City Chiefs traveling to Buffalo Buffalo, Josh
Allen finding a way to get it done. Him and
his team win the game twenty eight to twenty one.
Patrick Mahomes didn't have a Patrick Mahomes like day. Nothing
(47:17):
was going right for them. So it's an interesting look
when it comes to this team. Rushi, Rice, thank you,
but no thank you because I need more from me,
I need more from Patrick. I don't think I'm winning
my Fantasy.
Speaker 2 (47:30):
League game because oh my gosh, no not hey, I
thought that using Travis Kelsey as a decoy. Was not
a good decision if they used him in a feature,
because they would. Man, you see the coverage, Yeah, they
were pop. Buffalo was hey, they was on their game
last night. Coverage wise, they were pop, So why not
(47:50):
have him? Of course, I think that he went away
from Kelsey because Kelsey even got you got pop going
across that middle.
Speaker 6 (47:58):
Yeah, it looked like old football. Yeah he was.
Speaker 1 (48:01):
Getting hit really, really hard. So we'll see what ends
up happening moving forward. But yesterday in the NFL was
a wild and wooly day. And the thing about it
to me too, you start looking at all of these
games and how it's starting to shape up. There were
some good football games yesterday that a lot of folks
(48:23):
were looking at him saying, well, I don't know. I
told you the Steelers. I thought the Steelers were gonna
win against Indy. Indy for one, they look good, I
mean Daniel Jones threw for three hundred and forty two yards,
but they stopped the running game and Jonathan Taylor was
the running game. And for them to be able to
win that game, scoring seventeen in the third, I mean
(48:45):
in the second quarter, that was huge for Pittsburgh. You
look at Minnesota, didn't expect them to go in and
beat the Vikings twenty seven to twenty four.
Speaker 6 (48:55):
But JJ McCarthy seems to be the answer for them.
Speaker 2 (48:59):
I told you in the year that he wouldn't quarterback
that played last year, that he should be the rookie
of the Year this year, and he's playing like at
these last two games.
Speaker 1 (49:10):
And then you look at what the Panthers were able
to do to go and beat the Green Bay Packers
at home at horrible and of course we had a
sixty eight yard field goal from the Cam Little of
the Jacksonville Jaguars. Just unbelievable plays This weekend games were outstanding.
(49:33):
Christian McCaffrey continues to show that he is the best
back in the NFL, the ultimate weapon. You look at
what the Rams are toji real contender for the Super Bowl,
and it just continues to get better and better. Cowboys
Cardinals tonight. That'll ruin your Monday. Yeah, But coming up next,
(49:55):
we're gonna talk to Fran Harris, lifetime Longhorn legend for
Harris joins us in just a moment right here on
the morning kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred.
Speaker 6 (50:06):
This is one.
Speaker 1 (50:10):
Let's welcome back to the Morning Kickoff. As you know,
this is the Legends of the Locker Room segment that
we normally have on Thursdays, but since basketball season tipped
off already today, I think it's only right that we
(50:34):
bring on a lifetime Longhorn legend, Fran Harris to join
us today to talk all things basketball, from w NBA
to NBA and of course the Texas Longhorns.
Speaker 6 (50:47):
Good morning, Frian.
Speaker 11 (50:49):
Where are you guys? How are y'all?
Speaker 6 (50:50):
We're good, We're good. We're excited to have you on.
Mark was like, we got to get her back on.
Basketball season is about to start.
Speaker 1 (50:57):
But before we get into basketball, I know that you
guys are going to be hosting the Austin Sports Awards
on December the seventeenth. Is this the first or second
time that you've been able to host this.
Speaker 15 (51:12):
This is the inaugural Assays and the ACA goes to
the Austin Sports Awards. It's the first time anyone has
gathered specifically for the Central Texas, if you will, Metro
Austin area, to really acknowledge and celebrate the greatness and
sports in this area.
Speaker 11 (51:30):
So it's the first one, but it won't be the last.
Speaker 6 (51:32):
I love it. I love it.
Speaker 1 (51:33):
And of course you got the big fellow to sit
in with you, so that that always does that too.
Speaker 15 (51:39):
Takes it, takes it a little over the top with
the crazy, but that's exactly what I want.
Speaker 2 (51:43):
We can't have both of us in the same room, nevertheless,
the same stage, but other.
Speaker 15 (51:53):
Well, let's get it what we didn't want this to
be a whole you know, the kinds of programs you
have at your church and those kinds the things.
Speaker 11 (52:00):
And I was like, hmmm, who couldn't be my co conspirator?
Speaker 15 (52:03):
Who is going to be off the charts, you know,
right them in people always said bring her back in,
bring her you know, That's what I wanted for the
Austin Sports Awards, and so I know Mark's going to
deliver on that.
Speaker 1 (52:13):
Well, you know, I'd try to do that every morning.
I try to bring him in every single for both
of y'all.
Speaker 6 (52:21):
On the city.
Speaker 2 (52:23):
We might need somebody to come moderate between us.
Speaker 1 (52:27):
Keep keep it on the rails, keep it on the rails.
Speaker 6 (52:30):
Well, let's talk about it.
Speaker 1 (52:31):
I wanted to talk w NBA real quick because I
know the last time that we talked to you. We
were talking about trying to get a team here in Austin.
It ended up going to a different franchise. But the
fight is still going on, correct, Yeah, we remain interested.
Speaker 15 (52:46):
I mean, obviously it would be a different conversation if
the the awards had gone to independent cities like Austin
or Nashville or Kansas City. But they went to to
NBA owners, which wasn't as problem as an insider, wasn't
a surprise at all that that's what they decided to do.
They want the NBA owners to eat because the economics
(53:08):
are great right now in the WNBA. So while I
was very irritated by that, I also understood.
Speaker 6 (53:13):
That, Oh I don't know. I still don't like it.
Speaker 2 (53:16):
I think that it's unfair for teams that actually had
they had franchises before and those those franchises didn't succeed
because of support, and you don't give somebody else.
Speaker 6 (53:28):
A shot, like I thought that was all that was.
Speaker 2 (53:30):
That was horrible, But friend, I'm looking so forward to
sharing the stage with you at the Austin Sports Awards.
Can you tell everybody how they can support and come
and be entertained by two of Austin's most accomplished and
absolutely crazy people.
Speaker 15 (53:53):
Yes, so support looks like getting your cheeks in the seats.
So cheeks in the seats, Okay, you can go get
your that's that's I love them.
Speaker 11 (54:00):
That's my moniker. Get some cheeks in the seat.
Speaker 15 (54:03):
So you can attend on the seventeen, which is a Wednesday,
by the way, it's.
Speaker 11 (54:07):
A Wednesday afternoon.
Speaker 15 (54:10):
It's more like a tailgating celebration, so you should feel
very comfortable in the space.
Speaker 11 (54:15):
But yeah, you can go to Austin Sports Awards dot com.
Speaker 15 (54:18):
Get all the details me and Mark on the website
and talking about what the show is going to be like.
But you've never been to an awards show like this
that much, I.
Speaker 11 (54:26):
Can tell you.
Speaker 15 (54:27):
It's gonna be fun, it's gonna be light, it's gonna
be crazy, gonna be some good grub, and we're gonna
recognize some great folks in Austin who have been doing
their things in sports.
Speaker 6 (54:34):
So what is it wrapped around?
Speaker 1 (54:36):
What is it? What is it for college? High school?
Everybody's best up?
Speaker 15 (54:42):
Yeah, it's the best of Yeah, the best of Boston.
Speaker 11 (54:46):
Great question.
Speaker 15 (54:46):
So, for instance, Athlete of the Year, I didn't say college.
I didn't say high school. I didn't say pros. I said,
who do you think has had the best year? So
that could be an athletic kid, that could be a
kid in high school, that could be a kid in
you know, in college.
Speaker 11 (55:00):
It can be whatever. So that's what's great about the
Austin Sports Awards. I didn't want it to feel like
we were narrowing the awards.
Speaker 15 (55:07):
Or the audience. So you're going to see people in
the room who are in college. You're going to see
people who have been here for forty years. You're going
to see some high school coaches get some legacy awards.
So it's a combination of audiences that have really done
it in sports over the last year. So and you
have to be a twenty twenty five participant, So no
awards from twenty twenty four to twenty five. Literally your
(55:28):
feats have taken place in the calendar year of twenty
twenty five.
Speaker 6 (55:32):
Okay, that makes a lot of sense.
Speaker 1 (55:34):
We're talking to friend Harris, lifetime Longhorn and a legend
on the forty Acres as she continues her quest to
bring Austin back onto the map. Because Austin definitely deserves
that we deserve it.
Speaker 6 (55:47):
We deserve it.
Speaker 1 (55:48):
So I wanted to ask you this because you know
the WNBA, we've talked about that and they're in the
process of an injunction right now. If I'm not mistaken
for work stoppage the CBA, you said it, you mentioned
it yourself. They've been making a lot of money this
past year. The players are starting to get a little
restless and want a big piece of the pie. What
(56:10):
is the next step for this to work out well?
Speaker 11 (56:13):
In a bold move. I don't know if y'all saw it.
Speaker 15 (56:16):
This past summer the players wore black T shirts that
said pay us what you owe us, which I thought
was so so. It didn't say pay us what we
are due, which has a different residence.
Speaker 11 (56:26):
They said pay us our money.
Speaker 15 (56:29):
Like literally, we see the returns, we see people in
the stands, we see the sponsorship increase, pay us what
you owe us, and so there is a good chance
there could be stoppage, which you know, people think though
a lockout and stoppage are the same thing, and they're not.
So the players we've seen in other leagues where they
have continued to work while they negotiate. I don't know
(56:49):
if that's going to be the case for the WNBA
because there's a lot of back pay that needs to
be addressed.
Speaker 11 (56:54):
And honestly, guys, the main thing, and.
Speaker 15 (56:57):
You guys are athletes, the main thing is is revenue share.
Like they're going to get an increase in salary. That's
already been said. Adam Silver has already said that, Kathy
Ingebert said that, but are we going to get our
fair share of the revenues that we are generating?
Speaker 11 (57:11):
And that is the big elephant in the room right now.
Speaker 2 (57:14):
Friend, do you think that Kat the ingelbird should be
in that position or should they make drastic changes and
bring someone like you who has been a high level
executive in women's basketball and WNBA, or should one of
the younger women that are right now are taking the
(57:35):
lead against this current regime.
Speaker 15 (57:39):
Yeah, also a great question because that job is a
couple of things.
Speaker 11 (57:43):
You need to be great at getting the bag.
Speaker 15 (57:45):
You got to be great at bringing the money in,
and you need to be great at relationships. And it's
a rarity. Everybody's not like us, Mark, who you were
good at both of those things. Like, I'm gonna get
that bag, but you're also gonna.
Speaker 11 (57:56):
Feel good giving me that bag.
Speaker 15 (57:58):
So a lot of that is about the relationships with
the players, and we don't we don't think that there's
necessarily that situation that exists right now. So Kathy, we know,
has done record breaking back getting, She's brought in a
lot of sponsors, she's very good at that. She comes
from a corporate environment. But where it's been documented, very
well documented, is that the relationships with the players are
(58:19):
just not there.
Speaker 11 (58:21):
The truth is in fairness.
Speaker 15 (58:23):
In fairness, I think it's a it's a unicorn, it's
a it's an elephant, you know, not that many people
who can navigate both.
Speaker 11 (58:30):
Of those worlds really really well.
Speaker 15 (58:32):
So even if Kathy is not in her role after
the season, my thing becomes, who are you going to
get I've heard some former athletes names thrown out, and
I've heard some corporate names thrown out, but we're not
gonna talk about those just yet.
Speaker 1 (58:44):
Yeah, keep it, keeping it on the hush hush, keep
it on the hush house.
Speaker 6 (58:47):
Well.
Speaker 1 (58:48):
Texas Women starts their season tonight against Incarnate Word. After
a great season last year, Madison booker Rory harmon Or back,
they brought it in the freshman Aliah Krump, I've got
a time I've spent with Vick Schaeffer. It's an exciting
time for this Texas women's basketball team.
Speaker 11 (59:06):
It really is. I saw the exhibition games.
Speaker 15 (59:08):
The first exhibition game I saw, I was really impressed,
candidly with Rory Harmon.
Speaker 11 (59:12):
I saw a fire in Rory's eyes that I have
not seen in three years.
Speaker 15 (59:17):
So I was very excited to see her looking competitive
out there and just balling. And then Crump, as you mentioned,
is a rookie who is not afraid to shoot, which
is always going to be my favorite players who just
let it fly like I'm not thinking about what coach
is thinking. And so they brought in some players to
really fill in those gaps where they were weak. Candidly
last year, I thought Connecticut, you know, everybody who played
(59:41):
them just kind of sat back on the three point
line and said that Texas can't shoot.
Speaker 11 (59:44):
Three pointers, so we're not going to even guard them.
So they went out. Vic went out and got.
Speaker 15 (59:47):
Some shooters, and I appreciate that as a shooter and
as a Longhorm fan, that they filled in the holes
for the gaps that they needed.
Speaker 6 (59:54):
Yeah, fran you are you are you going to the game.
Speaker 11 (59:58):
I'm calling the game tonight.
Speaker 6 (01:00:00):
Oh my goodness.
Speaker 15 (01:00:02):
Yeah, I'm not just going I'm calling the game tonight. Yeah,
I'm gonna be sitting there. I'm doing color tonight and
my first opportunity to be back since last year, and
I called a couple of their games. But this is
a decidedly better team in many ways, So I'm looking forward.
Speaker 2 (01:00:16):
To it hard than I went to a couple of
games last year.
Speaker 6 (01:00:20):
We got to make an effort to do more.
Speaker 1 (01:00:23):
Yes, those girls, I love watching them play because of
what you just talked about. You talked about what you
saw in Rory, but not only in Rory. They brought
in some transfers that looked to look to bring in
some damage. And that is the key for this team
to have that success.
Speaker 15 (01:00:41):
Yeah, I mean you look at South Carolina's reloaded, Connecticut's reloaded,
you see LA's reloaded. We had to reload because people
really do sleep on Texas. They don't think about Texas
when they think of perennial. You know, really great teams
right now. In women's basketball, Texas went to the Final
four last year. The year before without Rory, they got
one game from the final four.
Speaker 11 (01:01:01):
So put some respect on our name. But I get it.
You got to do.
Speaker 15 (01:01:05):
Something, You honestly have to do something to get that
repeated respect. And I think Bick has done a great
job at Texas in his six I think six years that.
Speaker 11 (01:01:13):
He's been there, and he continues.
Speaker 15 (01:01:16):
To understand what it takes to stay at that level.
And I appreciate that about him as a coach.
Speaker 1 (01:01:19):
Well, we'll appreciate you hopping on with us, and I
hope that you have a great call. I'll be listening
to it, making sure that you know you keep the
flow going because I know you got the flow.
Speaker 6 (01:01:29):
I see it.
Speaker 11 (01:01:30):
Appreciate that.
Speaker 15 (01:01:31):
Don't forget to go to Austin Sports Awards to get
your tickets to see Mark Henry truly truly show out
show you some of his best word.
Speaker 11 (01:01:38):
Thanks y'all.
Speaker 6 (01:01:38):
I get my Terry creuz on.
Speaker 2 (01:01:40):
I'm not doing the pickpot, but I'm still gonna be
out there having a good time.
Speaker 6 (01:01:45):
I pray for you, friend, I pray for you. Keep
praying for me too. Appreciate it, you got it?
Speaker 11 (01:01:52):
Sure, Thanks guys.
Speaker 6 (01:01:53):
There she is.
Speaker 1 (01:01:54):
Friend Harris coming in to let us know about the
Austin Sports Award Awards and of course talking about the
w NBA. Will there be a work stoppage them girls
want that money? And she will be on the call tonight,
but you will be hearing the game right here on
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred.
Speaker 6 (01:02:12):
The Zone with the voice Craig Way.
Speaker 1 (01:02:15):
But coming up next, our man Mark Henry brings you
his world's strongest take right here on the morning kickoff
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone Special thanks
to Fran Harris as she broke it down for the
Austin Sports Award that which this guy, WWE Hall of
Famer and World's Strongest Man d Mark Henry will be
(01:02:37):
coasting co hosting with her, But here he is, folks,
World's strongest man, bringing you his world's strongest take.
Speaker 6 (01:02:45):
Take it away, big fellow. What's going on?
Speaker 2 (01:02:48):
Guys?
Speaker 6 (01:02:49):
You know what time? It is? Hard?
Speaker 2 (01:02:51):
What fifth time for the world's strongest take by the
world's strongest man.
Speaker 6 (01:03:00):
I guess back then they didn't know. Now I'm hot,
they all on me.
Speaker 2 (01:03:06):
Well, here we are halfway through the season, the NFL season,
that is, and the trade deadline is here. We'll see
what moves are made on this trade deadline.
Speaker 6 (01:03:25):
But that's not my take. That was my second option.
What should be done.
Speaker 2 (01:03:32):
In the NFL, not just with the Cowboys, but big
trades going down. But my take is this after watching
last night's game between the Bills and the Chiefs, where
the Chiefs fell.
Speaker 6 (01:03:53):
To now third.
Speaker 2 (01:03:56):
In the West behind the Broncos and the Chargers, which have,
you know, all winning records. But when your two games
in that division, you might as well be a mile
away because in the West you have the Broncos being
(01:04:17):
the lead in in the South you have the Colts
who had seven wins. The Jaguars, you know, once they
get healthy, I think that they'll be a major player.
The Steelers, I'm not gonna go that far, not gonna
go that far. But the Patriots and the Bills are
(01:04:37):
teams that I think are the cream of the crop
out of everybody because of the defense that they play.
I feel like at the state, unless the Chiefs has
a remarkable and miraculous change over the next five games,
(01:04:58):
they may not even make the playoffs. They still have
them right now listed as the team most likely to
win the Super Bowl, But how can you win the
Super Bowl, hards if you don't even make it to
the playoffs.
Speaker 6 (01:05:14):
It's impossible.
Speaker 2 (01:05:16):
And my take is this that this may be the
year that the Chiefs do not make the playoffs.
Speaker 6 (01:05:23):
What's say you, I will take that bet.
Speaker 1 (01:05:24):
I know we're doing it for entertainment purposes, but I
will gladly, gladly take a bet with you for whatever
the little dinner, the steak dinner, or whatever you.
Speaker 6 (01:05:36):
Want to do.
Speaker 1 (01:05:38):
I will gladly take that bet because I believe that
they will be in the playoffs.
Speaker 6 (01:05:43):
I think they still have a way to get in there.
Speaker 1 (01:05:46):
Even being third in their division doesn't mean if you
look at out everybody else, you gonna get into the playoffs.
The Baltimore Ravens are three and five, the Jaguars are
five and three. You're five and four. You're gonna have
a chance to get into the playoffs. If you look
at the playoff picture right now, they're in. They're in,
(01:06:09):
and I still believe that they're gonna have a chance
to win the whole thing because to your point, just
get in and that gives you the opportunity to win.
If they're in right now, that says the playoff pitcher,
They're eighty eight percent chance to be in the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (01:06:27):
I'm just saying from the way that things look, I don't.
Speaker 6 (01:06:32):
I feel like that the coach kind of sault looks
like sugar. They kind of.
Speaker 2 (01:06:36):
Stunt, they toe a little bit. But I think they'll
be back next week. The can't City. The Chiefs are
in the spot where they have to rely on other
people to lose to make it to the playoffs. Even
if they go undefeated at the rate that everybody else.
Speaker 6 (01:06:54):
Is playing, they still will be a game or two behind.
Speaker 1 (01:06:59):
Are you trying to get them to win the division?
Or you just trying to get them into the playoffs
because they're gonna get.
Speaker 6 (01:07:05):
Into the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (01:07:06):
I don't think that enough teams are gonna lose even
if they win out.
Speaker 6 (01:07:13):
That they're gonna they're gonna make it to the playoffs.
I will take what would you like to wager on that?
Why are you?
Speaker 11 (01:07:21):
Why?
Speaker 2 (01:07:21):
Why does this become a become entertainment purposes only segment?
Speaker 6 (01:07:25):
Right? Because you're the one that came up with this.
Speaker 1 (01:07:28):
You don't see them getting into the playoffs?
Speaker 6 (01:07:30):
Not your But why'd you say? What say you? Is
how that go?
Speaker 13 (01:07:38):
Mark?
Speaker 6 (01:07:39):
What say you? Ask you? No more?
Speaker 1 (01:07:44):
Playoffs?
Speaker 6 (01:07:44):
Don't talk about the playoffs?
Speaker 1 (01:07:46):
You kidding me?
Speaker 3 (01:07:47):
Playoffs?
Speaker 4 (01:07:49):
I just hope we're gonna win a game another game.
Speaker 1 (01:07:52):
And that that's exactly where they're going to be. So
let me, let me, let me break down. I like
State dinners though. Yeah, trust me, we hear about it
every day. We hear about So next week they play
the Broncos, then they play the Colts, then they play
the Cowboys. On Thanksgiving they play the Texans, the Chargers,
(01:08:12):
the Titans, the Broncos, the Raiders.
Speaker 6 (01:08:15):
I see some I see some wins in there. I
see some wins in there.
Speaker 1 (01:08:21):
They to your to your point of what you said
the other day about this team.
Speaker 6 (01:08:26):
They got Rashid Rice.
Speaker 1 (01:08:28):
They got Hollywood Brown, they got Xavier Worthy, they got
Travis Kelsey.
Speaker 2 (01:08:33):
Theo they are. They are average with all that talent
they need. They they need a thumper. So are we
taking it? Are we taking? We're gonna come out, man?
You know it is what it is. I like steak dinner, Okay,
I will decide on what place stuff A sponsors.
Speaker 6 (01:08:51):
The thing is who I'm talking about.
Speaker 2 (01:08:54):
I'm just saying I don't free that, and I don't
even want you to come out of pocket for it.
Speaker 6 (01:08:59):
I just pull or you to come out of pocket.
Speaker 2 (01:09:02):
Well, I definitely don't want to come out of cause
I'm gonna eat like I don't have a budget.
Speaker 6 (01:09:09):
And that's the difference. He ain't gonna eat nothing.
Speaker 1 (01:09:12):
He just gonna have a couple of bites here and
there and I finish it because I'm watching my weight.
Speaker 6 (01:09:18):
I don't want to talk to you. That just didn't
sound right. I don't even want it.
Speaker 1 (01:09:22):
We'll come back and close out the show and send
you to Dan Patrick. We got we got cowboys in action,
and of course we gotta talk about this Oklahoma situation.
Speaker 6 (01:09:33):
Yeah, that situation right.
Speaker 1 (01:09:36):
Here on the Morning Kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone with a great show victory Monday edition
of the Morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM

Speaker 6 (01:10:33):
All right, we put it off long enough.
Speaker 1 (01:10:36):
I want you to hear from the call of Kirk
Herbstreet and Chris Fawlor talking about the shorts that one
kicker from Oklahoma Mark was wearing.
Speaker 6 (01:10:52):
The volunteers. No, this guy is a short short time.
Speaker 14 (01:10:56):
I guess that's no longer.
Speaker 6 (01:11:01):
Frowned upon on the sport Yeah, I guess it is
with me. Those are the shortest I've ever seen in
a football field.
Speaker 14 (01:11:07):
Should be let should be a penalty, just just just
dressing like that should be a penalty.
Speaker 6 (01:11:12):
The hell is it?
Speaker 7 (01:11:13):
They're in shorts out there?
Speaker 13 (01:11:14):
It's another fifty plus.
Speaker 14 (01:11:16):
This is from fifty one to give Oklahoma the lead.
Sendell short shorts but not short on distance?
Speaker 6 (01:11:31):
Power? Is it due again? From fifty one and.
Speaker 2 (01:11:34):
Oklahoma is on top on Rocky Top venables are.
Speaker 6 (01:11:39):
Smiling for good reason.
Speaker 14 (01:11:41):
His team's been out played with the two takeaways, not
done much on offense, but they got a kicker.
Speaker 6 (01:11:47):
Yeah, got his daisy dudes on and puts up. Let
him again from.
Speaker 3 (01:11:54):
Where it comes again, letting people know.
Speaker 6 (01:12:04):
He's got daisy duke's on.
Speaker 1 (01:12:06):
Ladies and gentlemen, It is an embarrassment.
Speaker 2 (01:12:08):
For you to be out there on the football field.
Speaker 6 (01:12:12):
With short shorts on. Oh man, get off my lawn.
Speaker 1 (01:12:19):
No, no, no, that he, like Kirk Herbstreet said, he
should have been fined.
Speaker 6 (01:12:26):
I believe that.
Speaker 1 (01:12:26):
Oklahoma they make money now, they make money. That's not
uniform specific. They find you for not wearing the right
right socks on the NFL game.
Speaker 6 (01:12:36):
If you're not wearing.
Speaker 1 (01:12:37):
The proper uniform, they should have gained.
Speaker 6 (01:12:40):
Fifteen yard penalty for that.
Speaker 1 (01:12:42):
Oh yes, conduct detrimental because what to the form of
the game.
Speaker 6 (01:12:48):
This is not what this is. Come on, man, there's
no such thing. It could be made that up.
Speaker 1 (01:12:57):
That wasn't a two point conversion either, but they let
them have it. The SEC officiating should be throwing flags
when you come out there and you're not wearing the
proper uniform. That dude was out there in biker shorts.
What are we doing, man, what are we doing?
Speaker 6 (01:13:13):
Wow, there's no.
Speaker 1 (01:13:15):
Way that you should be I'll kick off, I'm going straight,
add him straight, adding knee capping, gone, gone. Shouldn't be
having on knee pads. You should be wearing a full
unified paths. He didn't had no pads. Daisy dukes out there.
Speaker 6 (01:13:33):
Listen.
Speaker 2 (01:13:33):
No, they weren't daisy dukes because that's up on your cheeks.
Speaker 6 (01:13:37):
But they was.
Speaker 2 (01:13:38):
Hey, it was definitely biking shorts.
Speaker 6 (01:13:44):
You're like a cyclist out there.
Speaker 2 (01:13:46):
He was with no knee pads, no five pads, and
they were mid thigh. They weren't like two or three
inches below the knee like a like a like a cyclist.
Lance Armstrong even pull up a picture of Lance Armstrong.
The shorts were usually about two inches from the knee,
and he was with men thought like five and six inches. Hey, Mark,
(01:14:10):
you need to call your son and be like, get
your man's No, get your man's in there. I'm not
calling doing nothing. But I tell you what I do
not agree with this. I really do feel like I don't.
Speaker 1 (01:14:24):
Know about fine fine suspension, suspension uniform. He need to
come out there with some bell bottoms all next week.
That's what I need just to comme say exactly.
Speaker 6 (01:14:37):
That is an embarrassment. It was an absolute and bears wild.
That was wild.
Speaker 2 (01:14:42):
But you know what, why you think it's okay? It's
not okay. But I'm just saying I like his swag though.
Speaker 6 (01:14:49):
What I like man a kicker. Usually it's a wide receiver.
That's that guy.
Speaker 1 (01:14:54):
You remember when our boys Sewn Adams RP to him,
was always talking about your slipper, showing how come.
Speaker 6 (01:15:00):
Nobody is telling him that.
Speaker 2 (01:15:02):
That ain't all That shows that one of the teammates,
somebody socks up something.
Speaker 1 (01:15:13):
This is something that should not be happening in sport.
We've seen it on so many levels. I've seen it
in baseball. I've seen it in baseball. The baseball pants
are above the need. That's that's not cool.
Speaker 6 (01:15:28):
Yeah, that's not we should we shouldn't make a have
a vote, oh what on whether or not.
Speaker 2 (01:15:34):
This is the thing that they just really start enforcing
the rules in college like they do in the pros
with fines if your equipment does not meet the end
almost said the NFL standard, the collegiate standards. And just
like today is actually voting day for us. So anybody
(01:15:57):
that wants to vote on the Sports Awards, you can
go to Sports Awards dot Com and you get the
vote on athletes that you think should be uh, definitely
put in some of those categories for what sport that
they would excel.
Speaker 1 (01:16:13):
Then well he will not what he's not going to
be part of the winning culture.
Speaker 6 (01:16:20):
How you know? How you know? How do I know?
Speaker 1 (01:16:25):
Exactly? Listen, here's the bottom line. As a coaching staff,
you should make sure that that doesn't happen.
Speaker 6 (01:16:34):
As a a what are you?
Speaker 1 (01:16:37):
Your specialist, your coach, your special teams coach, Jeff Banks?
You take Jeff Banks letting him walk out there like that,
You take Sarka's letting him walk out that.
Speaker 6 (01:16:49):
They probably were looking at him like what what the hell?
Speaker 2 (01:16:51):
I would have complained if I was an opposing coach,
even if it wasn't, if I knew that nothing was
going to get done, I would make a stink and
complain about it, just getting his head.
Speaker 6 (01:17:04):
He wears short shorts. You wear short shorts? What do
we there, man? Yes, yes, we don't even have a product. No,
I don't probably do.
Speaker 2 (01:17:17):
I will say boot Carter on the average four yards
of return, so maybe a strategy.
Speaker 1 (01:17:23):
A monk said, boo Carter, that's a dude's day, because
that dude, right, there deserves a boo as well.
Speaker 9 (01:17:30):
Well.
Speaker 6 (01:17:30):
I was the returner for Tennessee.
Speaker 1 (01:17:32):
It's just unbelievable that that could even happen. I can't
believe that's happening at your saung school like that.
Speaker 6 (01:17:41):
Now you're gonna put it what I mean, why do
you have to put my name in it? Jacob seeing
