(02:25):
The NBA continues to be fantastic. As I said at
the very beginning, there's some teams that get it and
some teams that don't. The Boston Celtics are a team
that we thought, well at least I did, thought was
going to repeat as champion. But the New York Knicks, somehow,
some way continue to find a way to make it

(02:49):
rough on the Boston Celtics. And once again they come
from behind for the victory. And it sounded a little
bit like this, they wanna go.

Speaker 3 (03:05):
They're not going to use the time out.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
Plenty of time here, it's treatament runs Who's time treatment?

Speaker 3 (03:14):
And Clintain the rest defensive play for the next They
got it, stay wanted. New York has gone up two games,
turn one and two. Sentence again at the end is
believe all those pigs were worth it now.

Speaker 1 (03:34):
I mean, it is unbelievable when you sit and watch
this New York Knicks basketball team play.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
They were down at the end of the first quarter.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
At the end of the first quarter, it was twenty
four to thirteen, twenty four to thirteen point and then
all of a sudden they come back into the second half.
That what the second quarter runs? Always standing, I think
it is always did you like it? I love that
Moniker yo?

Speaker 2 (04:07):
Yeah, every time he hit a shot Barkley the burner. Yep,
shock Kenny, Like they really did, like get behind him.
I think that that might be something they.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
Got some legs.

Speaker 1 (04:20):
This is this is a team in the New York Knicks.
They only play eight players. They only play eight truly,
truly only seven because Cameron Payne, he just comes in
just for the last couple of seconds of each half
to get in and get brunts in a break before

(04:41):
they have to go back in. But this is a
team once again that finds el way to get it done.
You look at what the Boston Celtics didn't do. And
Jason Tatum looked like he was out of it at
the end of the game, like he could not get
into any rhythm and and it was one of those

(05:01):
I feel sorry for myself type of deals. He doesn't
look like that guy that we expected to be there.

Speaker 3 (05:11):
And why not call it time out?

Speaker 1 (05:13):
Well, because they saw what happened to play before. I mean,
what's his name, Joe's Missoula. He said that when they
got that one play where Jason Tatum ran the ball
right up the court and he dunked it real quick score.
I looked at everybody in my house and I said
that was too fast. That was too fast because you
had twenty four point three seconds left or eight seconds,

(05:34):
twenty four point eight seconds.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
Left, you basically have the last shot.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
They went down and scored real quick, and I was like,
that is the dumbest thing that you could possibly do,
is score that fast. Take the last shot, take the
last shot. But no, what do they do. They go
down in the New York Knicks, go and make a play.
As alway, I love that double team. That was like,

(06:00):
stop the ball. We say that all the time to him.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
Anytime that I go to a game with you and
watch your son play, we always say stop the ball.
And then once you stop the ball, then you have
one time is ticking. But secondly you make him make
a pass, there's a chance that he might throw.

Speaker 3 (06:23):
That ball away. And that's what ends ended up what happened.
And this is at the NBA level. This is the.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
Highest level, championship basketball level.

Speaker 1 (06:33):
So all you young kids out there, stop the ball.
You gotta stop the ball. Here's here's the other thing.
For eight minutes, eight minutes, I believe they only scored
one bucket.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
For eight minutes.

Speaker 1 (06:48):
In the fourth quarter, they got outscored thirty to seventeen
in the fourth quarter. You can't do that, Boston, Like,
I don't understand your at home too.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
Why are they taking so many shots outside the perimeter,
outside of three.

Speaker 3 (07:06):
It's unbelievable.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
And not just twenty three feet twenty four feet, they're
taking twenty seven.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
They took forty three pointers again last night. It's uh,
they were ten of forty. Oh my god, they are worse.
It sounds like they are worse than what we've seen
from Minnesota when they were talking about it yesterday.

Speaker 3 (07:29):
No, nobody's worse. Well, they missed forty five the other night.
Think about that. They missed forty.

Speaker 2 (07:34):
Five, so they missing they missed eighty shots, yes, in
two games.

Speaker 3 (07:40):
Unbelievable.

Speaker 4 (07:41):
Yeah, this is one of them situations when they don't
even have a plan B. It's all playing a shoot
the three, no plan B.

Speaker 3 (07:48):
Yes, I mean and Brown Brown and uh.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
Got Tatum Tatum right, both of them all drew holiday.
Four of those guys they can drive the basket. They
all have that ability to get to the basket, and
they just they're just not I don't understand it. That's
not how they won last year against Dallas.

Speaker 4 (08:14):
Yes, but that was the Fortape back in the days.
If the shot ain't falling, attack the basket. The shot
starts will start to fall. But nobody does that anymore.
It's just shoot the three, shoot up, shoot your way
out of it.

Speaker 1 (08:26):
It just doesn't make any sense, and that's why you
start to look at what's happening. You talked about Missoula
the other day, talking about his coaching or lack thereof.

Speaker 3 (08:36):
In certain situations.

Speaker 2 (08:37):
He sits there and relies on his players to get
him out of trouble.

Speaker 3 (08:42):
Yeah, and they're not doing it. You gotta coach him.

Speaker 1 (08:45):
It's if I'm a Boston fan, and I said this
the other day, I thought, I thought that game, the
first game, when when the Knicks came from behind to win,
I thought that was fake news because of the way
that they shot the basketball, because of the way Boston shot.
Forty five miss threes. So you're thinking to yourself, they're

(09:07):
not gonna do that again. No, they won't do that.

Speaker 3 (09:10):
No way.

Speaker 1 (09:11):
Thirty three pointers again. Seventy five missed three pointers right
in a series that has only been two games. Shoot
the rock.

Speaker 3 (09:27):
I'm the best shooter out here. Give me no ball,
Give me no ball.

Speaker 1 (09:32):
I mean you look at this game, and you're like,
congratulations to the Knicks, because one thing that they have
always shown they are a very resilient bunch and grit.
They play buzzer to buzzer. Yeah, they don't care how
far down they are. They find a way to get
it done. And they did it again last night, and

(09:55):
now they get to go home and have home court.

Speaker 3 (09:58):
Now. I don't know much about much.

Speaker 2 (10:01):
I wish that we could go to a Nick game
right to be in the environment of a two and
zero team coming back to the Garden, just like Spike
Lee is. Spike Lee might be standing behind the coach.
He might be standing next to the coach screaming. A
Smith is losing his mind right now. He don't deserve

(10:24):
this joy.

Speaker 1 (10:26):
They were not supposed to win both of those games.
They were out. They were losing both of those games
twenty points down in both. It came from behind to
win again.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
So what's gonna happen now that they're at home fired
up hard?

Speaker 3 (10:43):
I don't know. I couldn't this be a sweep. It'll
be a.

Speaker 1 (10:46):
Gentleman A gentleman. I think it's gonna be a gentleman sweep.
And the only reason Why is because.

Speaker 3 (10:50):
That's one win for y'all.

Speaker 1 (10:52):
If you can't win at home and you're the Boston
Celtics defending, you don't deserve to win. You have given up.
We talked about it. Do you start until you will
lose a home game? And you lost two? Oh my goodness, dude,

(11:13):
are we headed to a New York Knicks? Indiana Pacers
old school? Reggie Miller, Patrick Ewing.

Speaker 3 (11:22):
I'm here for it down here for this is going
to be wow.

Speaker 1 (11:26):
We are just getting started here on the Morning Kickoff.
Coming up next, Coach Shark is doing some interviews and
he gotta talk to Josh Pate.

Speaker 3 (11:37):
And we'll talk about it right here.

Speaker 1 (11:39):
Palm the Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
The Zone. Welcome back to the Morning Kickoff right here
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Mike Harball,
Hard's World's Strongest Man in WWE Hall of Famer, the
Mark Henry, and of course we've got our guy Marcus

(12:00):
on the boards. Coming up in the next segment, we'll
have Eric Henry of Horns twenty four to seven joining
us to talk all things Texas as the Texas Longhorns
baseball team, gets ready for a huge weekend final home
series versus the Florida Gators kicking off tomorrow, tiking off tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (12:20):
What you got, you're gonna You're gonna tell them that
we had a breakthrough about what about me hugging you
and you men know you.

Speaker 3 (12:29):
Accepted I did not.

Speaker 1 (12:31):
I accepted you your compliment on something and you came
by and patted me, and.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
You didn't complain the day you did. It's the first
day that you never complained.

Speaker 1 (12:46):
That's because I couldn't breathe, because you was head.

Speaker 3 (12:55):
I couldn't breathe.

Speaker 1 (13:00):
Dude, choked up over there. But we will have Eric
Henry of Horrace twenty four to seven to talk about
Texas baseball. Obviously, we're going to continue conversations about Texas football.
Texas football never ever stops here as always, and speaking
of never stopping, coach Sarkisian had a busy week. You know,

(13:23):
it is the off season, so his time is a
little bit different. He had a real busy off season
as well, from transfer portal to practice. No spring game,
but they did have spring practices and we also got
a new quarterback on campus.

Speaker 3 (13:40):
We'll get a chance to talk to Eric about that
as well.

Speaker 1 (13:43):
But he got a chance to talk to Josh Pate
Pete State as he likes to go by he is
part of CBS. They always have some good conversation. And
here is the opening two questions from Josh pay to
coach Sark.

Speaker 5 (14:01):
So, when I was growing up in like the two thousands,
when people talked about elite teams of college football, they
would just say, like, for example, the usc s, and
then it was the Florida's and then saving it's to Alabama.
But there are always these two or three teams that
you just rattle off as an example of the top
level of college football. You hadn't won a national title

(14:22):
here yet, you haven't won an SEC title here yet,
but yet that conversation's Texas.

Speaker 3 (14:27):
Now. I don't know how rewarding that is.

Speaker 5 (14:29):
And it's got to be at least a little validating
to know when people are rattling off the examples of
what it's supposed to look like, they don't get too
far down the list before there it is Texas, right
back into combo.

Speaker 6 (14:39):
Well, I'd like to validate it, maybe with a couple
of you still do one tonother Yeah, that would be nice,
you know, I think that we've worked really hard.

Speaker 3 (14:48):
Obviously we got here.

Speaker 6 (14:50):
I think I say this all the time when you
take on a job like this. One of the keys
to this is understanding what you sign up for. And
there's clearly a standard at the University of Texas about
competing and winning championships. And that's not just in football,
it's across the board, you know, And you think about
we've won three of the last four Directors Cups.

Speaker 3 (15:13):
We have twenty one sports here.

Speaker 6 (15:14):
Nine of them have been ranked number one in the
country in their respective sports this year.

Speaker 3 (15:20):
That's almost half yeah, right, And.

Speaker 6 (15:21):
So when you when you think about it that way,
there's a standard of excellence that that we have to
strive for here that we're held accountable to. But that's
what you have to know, that's what you sign up for.
And so going into year five, it's been.

Speaker 3 (15:35):
A lot of work.

Speaker 6 (15:35):
There's been a lot of work, you know, on the field,
on the grass with the players. Been a lot of
work behind the scenes, recruiting players, developing players in the program,
producing NFL talent, been a lot of been a lot
of work with with stuff that's going on facility wise,
and what we've been doing and so much credit goes
to the administration and in Crystal Connie and the support

(15:57):
he's given us, UH, to our donors, to to to
want to make this thing grow and build into something
where year in and year out we can't compete for championships. Now,
ultimately the onus is on us. We have to try
to go and do this and get it done. But
at the end of the day, we've put ourselves in
a good position to where maybe people do talk about

(16:17):
us in that light, But at the end of the day,
I'm kind of about the reward at the end rather
than what other people think. I'd rather actually have something
to show for it.

Speaker 3 (16:26):
So check this out.

Speaker 1 (16:27):
And this is where this is where we were a
few years ago. Mark, you start to look at what's
going on here on the forty acres.

Speaker 3 (16:38):
We talked a little bit about that.

Speaker 1 (16:39):
They also won the SEC Trophy just the other day
for the most victories by a university in the SEC.
Talking all sports, all sports, Yeah, I remember when the
Director's Cup first came to the University of Texas and
coach Sark had just got here five and seventh season,

(17:01):
but Texas was winning on every other level, every other level.
They were winning, and he was like, that's great, but
I want to be a part of the.

Speaker 3 (17:12):
Reason why we won this. I want to be part of.

Speaker 1 (17:17):
We're not holding up our end of the deal, is
basically what he was saying. Now, you look at back
to back seasons, only team to go back to the
college football Playoffs in the new format, even expanded for me,
Texas was the only team to be able to do that.
You look at the recruiting classes you talk He talked
about the new upgrades that are being done at the

(17:40):
University of Texas, the football practice facilities that are going
to be going up, the new recruiting area for the
recruits when they come in in their families. Texas is
ascending in the right direction, and it's pretty cool to
see because the messaging continues to be we're not done.

Speaker 2 (18:01):
It used to be a rotation between Stanford, Penn State,
and Texas.

Speaker 3 (18:06):
Yes, now it's just Texas.

Speaker 2 (18:08):
Yes, nobody's talking about Stanford, nobody's talking about Penn State.

Speaker 3 (18:12):
Yes, And we talked about yesterday.

Speaker 2 (18:14):
You know, the money leads to everything, and Texas is
making double what everybody else is making. So I'm I mean,
I'm shout out to the whole program and administrators over there, CDC,
you the man.

Speaker 1 (18:31):
I mean, it's just it's just a really really cool deal.
As he said during that clip, you know, you start
looking at every single team and you realize they've been
number one at some point in almost every before they've
been number one, they've touched the number one spot at
some point. So you look at them and you try

(18:54):
to figure out, Okay, what's next, what can they do next?
And coach Sark continued his conversation with Josh pay about
all these things, but more importantly about his football team.

Speaker 5 (19:05):
You we talked last year, and I remember you told
the story about how when you were finishing your time
at Bama, when you were getting hired at Texas, you
sort of took the job side unseen.

Speaker 3 (19:14):
You hadn't really, I.

Speaker 5 (19:15):
Didn't sort of like Austin, find it on the map,
let me.

Speaker 3 (19:18):
Look at pictures. I knew of it, so you had.

Speaker 5 (19:21):
I mean, like anyone else who takes a job, you
have an idea of what you think the Texas head
coaching job is, and then you're probably looking from a
program perspective, what I think we could turn it into
if we handle our business the right way. Yeah, but
there's a whole lot you can't know until you take
over the job. So now you're several years in. So
how do you compare, you know, in your in your

(19:42):
outsider's perspective, what you thought the Texas job would be
versus now in the weeds boots on the ground of
what it has.

Speaker 3 (19:49):
Yeah, you know, I've been thinking about this quite a bit.

Speaker 6 (19:51):
You know. We I got here in January twenty one,
coming out of that COVID football season, which was like
one of the oddest years whatever, and we had a
great team at Bama. The congrats by the way, Yeah,
how about that.

Speaker 3 (20:04):
I was the interim head coach with the.

Speaker 5 (20:05):
Wikipedia page just like people don't even know. Is this
a type of yeah, no, you head coached Alabama?

Speaker 6 (20:10):
And then I tried to talk coach saban and on
site kicking to start the game. He didn't want to
do it, but but anyhow we want so it worked out.
And then you know, at the end of that spring semester,
you know, our your athletic department always gives you accumulative
team GPA for the year fall spring semesters, and we
had a two point three to three team GPA, and
I thought, that's not very good. Granted, University of Texas,

(20:32):
great institution, top five public university in the country.

Speaker 3 (20:35):
Two three, three is not great.

Speaker 6 (20:37):
Then the season rolls around and we go five and
seven and we had blown six straight second half leads.
Not very good draft picks. We have no draft picks.
So what was the problem? What was our issue? I said,
we have a culture issue. We lack accountability, we're entitled. Okay,
we we don't serve others. You know, it's about me

(21:00):
and that in that moment, I know we've touched on
this before, but in that moment, it was like, that's
the real issue going on. I granted, we want talent, right,
and we want to acquire talent, we want to retain
our talent, and we put an emphasis on the line
of scrimmage and those types of things. But at the
end of the day, it wasn't a talent issue that
we had that year. It was it was a culture issue.

(21:22):
And so now fast forward going into year five, what
is what has come out of this is we have
a group of players on our team now that they're
the ones we recruited, they're the ones that have grown
up with us. Right our fourth year seniors have been
with us now for four straight years. Our our third
year players, you know that that Arch, that Anthony Hill,

(21:44):
the Cedric Baxter's, the Manny Muhammads, the Derek Williams, that
group of guys. They don't know any different than what
we do. And so I think about my time at Bama,
and granted it was it was closing in on the
end for Coach Saban's run there, but how that was ran,
how the older players educated the younger players on what

(22:04):
was acceptable, what was not, how we went about our
business at Bama has now started to come to fruition here.
And I think about what Kirby's been able to do
at Georgia, or what Dabbo's been able to do at Clemson,
or what Ryan's been able to do out Ohio State.
They're kind of in front of us in that cycle,
but their cycle has really well underway. Our cycle really

(22:26):
now has just begun because now we've got nothing but
players that don't know any different than what we do
and why those things are important. And to watch them
lead in a way differently now than maybe we did
the past couple of years is really fun to be
part of now, and it's exciting to be exciting to see,
it's exciting to watch it kind of come to life.

Speaker 1 (22:48):
And the funny thing about that too, where he said
that these guys are bought in basically is what he's saying.
We set the foundation now how it's time to go
to work and they know nothing else. It's kind of
like when you get hired at a job and you're
the new hire, but somebody else things have changed a

(23:09):
little bit within the company and you're the new person.
You don't know anything about what happened before. You know
everything about what you're doing now. So it's huge that
that happens. Coming up next, we're gonna be talking to
our guy Eric Henry of Horns twenty four to seven,
get his take on the state of the union at
the University of Texas, and talk a little baseball as well.

(23:32):
Right here on the morning kickoff on sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone. It is teacher Appreciation Day, that's right.
Go out there and help out all the teachers, get
them presents. They've been babysitting your kids all year long,
so let's figure out out and help them out. But
joining us on the line is our guy Eric Henry

(23:55):
of Horns twenty four to seven. Make sure you following
that Eric c hen underscore and E let me ask you,
is there a favorite teacher that you've had throughout your life? Oh?

Speaker 7 (24:08):
First off, there's always good morning. Appreciate y'all having me
on most definitely, Man, I got to give a shout
out to my eleventh and twelfth grade social studies, sociology,
all those kind of subject teachers. Mister Gregory Tampa Catholic
High School. One of the few teachers who invested in me,
not just as you know, someone who played sports or whatever,

(24:28):
but really invested me as a person. So yeah, man,
you know, hearing you talk about teacher appreciation, they just
intally made me think of her, So shout out to her.

Speaker 3 (24:35):
That's awesome.

Speaker 1 (24:36):
Man. Everybody has that one teacher that always looks out
for them and leads them in the right direction. I
wanted to ask you this too, because obviously Texas football
gets a new quarterback to come on campus, and I
understand that he's not a guy that is there to
take the job from Arch Manning. But when you first

(24:57):
heard that that was happening, what was the first thing
that came your mind.

Speaker 7 (25:02):
I wasn't surprised Hard, because if you take a look
at Steve Sartigian's history, he doesn't want to go into
a season with only three scholarship quarterbacks, right, And that's
the thing with college Most college coaches don't want to
go if they had their preference, they don't want to
go into the season with only three scholarship quarterbacks. So
it's not a surprise that he goes out and gets
a Matthew Calwell from Troy, just to kind of you know,

(25:23):
as you know it, Hard's listen, he's not coming in
there to challenge arch Manning. Right, here's the situation. You
have Trey Owens. Steve Sartigian has been high on him,
continues to be high on him. You have kJ Lacey,
a true freshman. I've talked about it on Your Guys Show.
During Steve Startigian's four year that Texas he has never
had just one quarterback start every single game because of injury. Right,

(25:44):
knock on wood. You hope arch Manning could be that guy,
But if Texas played sixteen or seventeen games, the likelihood,
the probability is that you will need a quarterback. You
take comes backs at some point in time, why not
go out and get a kid who at this point
in his career. Just give you a little background on
Matthew Cauldoff and Troy He wasn't the starter to open
the year last year, started the last six games of

(26:06):
the year for the Trojans, but they have a returning
quarterback coming back, right, So at this point in his career,
at this point in the offseason, he can enter the
transfer portal and maybe go compete for a QB one
job at an FCS school or a lower G five school,
or come to Texas compete for best case scenario, be
the QB two or all right, then if that doesn't

(26:27):
work out, he pushes kJ Lacey and Trey Owens and
kind of push them to step third game up. So
it's just to bring in another arm and of course
you get someone who has twenty five career games worth
of playing experience, just in case wars stay scenario.

Speaker 2 (26:41):
A lot of times you see quarterbacks come into systems
that where they can learn that really to pro the
nuances of the pro game. Do you think that played
a part in it too, that he wanted to come
to Texas and kind of learn under the Steve Sarkisian Tree.

Speaker 7 (27:00):
Yeah, Mark, You're you're you know, kind of theory, isn't all.
But Matthew Caulwell, and I'm not saying this to not
the kid doesn't really have a professional future, right. I mean,
I think Matthew Caulwell came to Texas because, as I said,
at this point in the stage of the offseason, when
things played out at Troy where they have their returning

(27:22):
started coming back Will Crowder, the kid who started the
first seven games with them before he got hurt. If
that's the direction they want to go in, you take
a look at the options and you say, hey, all right,
I can go compete, possibly be a starter at a
group of five or an SCS school, or I can
come to Texas and get you know, whatever Nile package
may come. I will say this to your point, having

(27:43):
the opportunity to learn under Steve Starkegian for whatever his
future may be, whether that's coaching or you know, playing
at a level that's not the NFL, that probably puts
him in a better scenario to do that. But yeah,
I don't want to, you know, even try to give
the illuse and I'm not knocking the kid, but you know,
He's someone who began his career as a walk on

(28:04):
at the G five level, so he doesn't really have
the NFL feature you would think unless something crazy happens.
So this is more for probably his development in terms
of whatever he may want to do as far as
coaching or something else.

Speaker 2 (28:16):
Well, we talk about the quarterback position because of the
importance of it, but really the brass tags are the
offensive line.

Speaker 3 (28:25):
Give me some.

Speaker 2 (28:26):
Kind of news and nugget that would make me feel
real comfortable about what this offensive line going forward next
season is.

Speaker 7 (28:37):
Yeah, you know, and listen, I agree with you, Mark, right,
and you know I actually wrote this earlier this week
that for all the things we want to believe that
Arch Manning can be, he cannot resemble his grandfather back
in New Orleans where he was running for his life.
Play and play out right, what what caused what caused
Georgia to come into Austin this year and leave with
the victory was their ability to dominate upfront. So to

(28:58):
give you something that's you know, a little bit of hope,
I think Cole Husband's development, you know, after of course,
well know, Cole came in as a starter as a
true freshman, has been kind of a reserved guy, can
play on various spots across the interior of the offensive line.
I think his development now two years removed from that,
it's something to be excited about. I think Nato Umazou

(29:18):
that's another one to be excited about at guard, right,
it's you know, it's kind of at a point in
his career where if you look at where Texas has been,
I don't think it was a lack of talent that
keeps them off the field. I think it's just the
fact that, you know, they had a lot of cohesion
and a lot of a lot of talented starting offensive
lignment on their you know, previous teams. Right, We've talked
about the four starters laws from last year. So I think, again,

(29:42):
it's not that this group is short on talent, right,
it's set they're short on cohesion. Can they build that.

Speaker 3 (29:48):
Over the offseason.

Speaker 7 (29:49):
I think that's going to be key. Steve Sarkisian have
talked about that in his interview with twenty four to
seven Sports Josh Pate. It's a matter of, Hey, it's
not that we don't have guys we believe in. It's
we're gonna need to kind of get those guys on
the same page so that come August thirty to thirty,
it's excuse me at Ohio State, they're ready to go, no.

Speaker 3 (30:04):
Doubt about it.

Speaker 1 (30:05):
I'm gonna let you go with this man, because got
this big question for you. Texas baseball has its best
record non conference record in sixteen years. But everybody's still
talking about Arkansas. But we move on now we have Florida.
What are your expectations into this weekend.

Speaker 7 (30:23):
Yeah, you take a look at Florida. You know, they
just lost the USF and the Gators has been a
bit of an up and down season and although they
are playing better baseball as of late. The expectation for
me is if you just look at Texas trackers throughout
the year, you think you'll take two out of three. Right,
They've obviously beaten top ten teams in the nation at
home and also you know hards. I think if you
can speak to this better to get the most I

(30:45):
think there's something for teams just being able to find
a way. Right like Arkansas they were due. You know,
you're not going to run through the entire SEC and
sweep everybody or win two out of three, especially going
to Arkansas on the road. They probably were due for
that type of series. But the way that Texas managed
to battle back, you know, getting a bit of a
type game against Lamar, you know, broke up for five
runs in the eighth inning. I think the way that

(31:05):
this team finds ways to get it done, that to
me is an encouraging thing. So my expectation this weekend
series is the Texas should at least take two out
of Precimigators.

Speaker 3 (31:14):
Yeah, they need to.

Speaker 1 (31:16):
As always, my man, I appreciate you jumping on with
us and sharing your knowledge as you always do. Make
sure you get over the Horse twenty four to seven
and check out the latest. But of course you can
always follow up at Eric c. Henry Underscore on social media.

Speaker 3 (31:32):
Thanks, he.

Speaker 7 (31:34):
Appreciate y'all.

Speaker 3 (31:34):
Thanks, all right.

Speaker 1 (31:35):
Coming up next, we're going to talk a little Texas softball.
They get ready to chase the dream of getting that trophy,
and we'll hear from coach Mike White right here on
the morning kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.

Speaker 3 (31:52):
Great stuff from our.

Speaker 1 (31:53):
God Eric Henry of Horror twenty four to seven, breaking
down all of the great news, great.

Speaker 3 (31:59):
News on the forty Acres.

Speaker 1 (32:02):
We'll hear more from coach sark as he sat down
with Josh Pate of Payton State, and we will hear
a lot more covering that, But right now we want
you to have a listen to Mike White and his
team as they get ready to take on Ole miss
this afternoon four pm on SEC Network, and they have

(32:25):
continued the conversations about the quest to be a champion.
SEC Championship, you get a chance to go into the
tournament and get crowned a championship before you get into
the NCAA tournament. Pretty much Texas is going to be
able to host, I would believe because of their national

(32:49):
ranking all season long. I'm sure that they're going to
be able to be a regional host. But Mike White
talks about it's always going to be a battle.

Speaker 8 (33:02):
We're excited to get an opportunity in this tournament, you
know as well as well covered there's a lot of
really good teams in it, and it's it's going to
be a tough, tough battle. Just an example how tough
it is. I mean Missouri, Uh, you know, they finished
fourteenth in the conference, you know, seating wise, and they've
beaten two of the number one teams. You know, they've
beat in Oklahoma and also Tennessee and gave us a

(33:23):
good run as well. So that tells you the depth
of the conference. And I think you're right, it is
one of the most deep of the sports. And you know,
just that says a lot about the game selp for itself,
what it means in the SEC to be part of us.

Speaker 7 (33:35):
So we're excited.

Speaker 4 (33:37):
What do you think that you most want to improve
upon during this tournament as you get ready for the
NCAA tournament upcoming.

Speaker 8 (33:44):
Yeah, I think, well, all, yeah, we've battled chasing from behind.
You know, we've had we've had a tough time getting
leads early in the games, and it seems like we
don't really free ourselves up until we're our backs are against.

Speaker 9 (33:54):
The wall and then look out.

Speaker 10 (33:56):
You know.

Speaker 8 (33:56):
From that, I think from the fifth ending on we
turn out our best performances. So I'm much sure why
that that occurs, and we're addressing that issue. And I
think we've got to free ourselves up and be less
afraid of failing or not having success and being more aggressive.
I think that at times we're taking too many good
pitches and so have some bad ones and that's never
a good recipe.

Speaker 1 (34:17):
And that's why you start to look at what's been
going on with Taylor Cavant. Me's teaguing cavan not Taylor
talking about her pitching, and Mike White mentioned that sometimes
you get pictures fatigued naturally, and.

Speaker 10 (34:31):
I think baseball's you know, more elbow orientated and shoulder
we suftle pitches tend to you know, it's back and
legs and actually the muscles in the forearm get really
tired because of the way you grip the ball, on
what you do, and so you can get over worked
that way. It tends to be a you know, not
so much of an acute injury, but happens over time.
You get a little fatigued and tired, and your bicep

(34:53):
bicep ten and itis is another big can be a
big another issue. So you know, we're aware of those things.
We keep monitoring how they do and make sure we're
not over.

Speaker 1 (35:01):
Working, especially because most of the time when you start
to look at all these pitchers, they run them out
there quite a bit. I mean, that's just natural. Your
arm movement is naturally moving underhand. It's not over the
top like always so we'll see. But the most important
thing is they get a chance to go out there
and play, and coach Mike White is believing that this

(35:23):
is a long time coming for this team.

Speaker 11 (35:26):
Join now by the head coach Mike White as well
as Reese Atwood. Guys, Welcome to the SEC Tournament. So
great to have you here for the first time. It
feels like forever we've been counting down to this moment.
How excited are you to have a little bit new
scenery here in the postseason.

Speaker 9 (35:41):
It started out well, I don't think Woods can put
it into place. Yeah, just a really exciting be part
of this atmosphere and be part of this tornum that
we've watched from home for the last few years. You know,
it's very exciting. Some great competition and read some good games.
Tever to re gone ahead of.

Speaker 3 (35:55):
Us, and it's an exciting time.

Speaker 1 (35:57):
We can't wait because Texas will play Ole Miss this
afternoon four o'clock first pitch, well, supposedly four o'clock first pitch,
but you know, sometimes these games kind of run a
little bit.

Speaker 2 (36:08):
But both these Texas teams are very well equipped and
they're good to go, so I don't have any interrepidation
is saying that I feel like Texas has an advantage
that they should go in there and do that and.

Speaker 3 (36:22):
Do that thing.

Speaker 1 (36:23):
And the winner of this game will take on the
winner of Alabama and Texas A and M. As last night,
I believe that's out it ended up. Let me make sure,
because yeah, South Carolina, excuse me, South Carolina and Texas
A and M. Texas will play the winner of that matchup.
In the top of the bracket, it's number nine LSU.

(36:45):
And when I say number nine, it's the seedings in
the SEC tournament. Number nine LSU takes on number one Oklahoma,
Number four Arkansas, number five, excuse me, number five.

Speaker 3 (36:57):
Arkansas takes on number four Tennessee.

Speaker 1 (36:59):
Number on eleven, Old Miss takes on number three the
Texas Longhorns. That's this afternoon at four o'clock. South Carolina
will take on Texas A and M. Following the Texas game,
it all kicks off today at a ten am on
the SEC network. SEC network has been holding it down

(37:20):
all week and we look forward to SEC play this
weekend for Texas Baseball.

Speaker 3 (37:27):
We'll have a conversation about that a little bit later.

Speaker 1 (37:30):
All right, ready, you always ready, stay ready, dog, you
ain't gotta stay.

Speaker 3 (37:34):
If you stay ready, then you ain't got to get ready.
Do you think you can hit a fast pitch softball pitch?
It's been a while.

Speaker 2 (37:42):
Wait, because I know the science, like it's closer so
it balances out. It's just like trying to hit a
you know, like an eighty mile an hour fastball.

Speaker 3 (37:53):
That wait wait, wait, wait wait wait what what do
you what did you just say? It's the what I know?

Speaker 2 (37:58):
You know it's the science because of being ninety feet away.
When you're closer, like the speed equals or balances itself
out like I mean this way. It was explained to
me by a profession so I'm I'm gonna go with
what they said rather than what I think. And if
he said that a fastball and softball would be like

(38:23):
hitting an eighty to eighty five mile an hour fastball,
and I told you I tried to hit over at
hit Athletic. They got up, they got upstairs, they got
the pitching machine machine, and I could not hit seventy five,
So why would I be able to hit eighty five?

Speaker 3 (38:39):
Y'all?

Speaker 1 (38:40):
I was about to say that person is not wrong,
but the release point area is totally different. The movement
is different, and yeah, the speed of it is different.
You know, coach Mike White used to be a pitcher,
and so I don't think I can hit off of him,
but I'll hit off everybody else.

Speaker 2 (38:58):
Hey, listen, I'm gonna watch. I'm not gonna be embarrassed.
Our number one is in the book.

Speaker 1 (39:07):
Coming up, our number two of the morning kickoff right
here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome
back to our number two of the morning kickoff right
here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. We
talked a lot about the NBA as the New York

(39:27):
Knicks have now put pressure on the Boston Celtics by
going in two what is it, td amror Trade whatever
they're calling that waterhouse.

Speaker 3 (39:38):
Yeah, well it's their arena.

Speaker 1 (39:40):
It's the Nick Arena now because they just went in
there and beat them twice, come from behind victor team.
And then of course you got a chance to watch
the OKC Thunder open up the can and set records
against the Denver Nuggets.

Speaker 3 (39:57):
We kind of figured that was gonna record. That was no,
you can give.

Speaker 2 (40:01):
It to him like that, that record the most points
scored and a half in NBA history was eighty six points.
Last night it got broken at eighty nine points in
a half.

Speaker 3 (40:19):
I was like, that's just embarrassing.

Speaker 1 (40:21):
You don't want to be turn the game off because
he's a Nuggets fan, and he was like, just turn
the game. They told up they would have threw the
towel in and just say, hey, we'll start tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (40:35):
But you know that it was smarter him to see
his guys though. You have to.

Speaker 1 (40:40):
I mean, at that point, you gotta you gotta start
thinking about the next game because you've already stole the
game in Okay.

Speaker 3 (40:45):
See, so you've already stole one.

Speaker 2 (40:48):
There were people playing that I didn't even know was
on that that roster deep Hey the guy the guy
that that was that was drying the floor off when
people fall down.

Speaker 3 (40:59):
They was like, hey man, you playing the night.

Speaker 1 (41:03):
They gave DeAndre Jordan came into game. That's how That's
how deep that that had to be. But right now
I want to give you an opportunity to win a
pair of tickets to go see Jason Aldean. Jason Aldean
August the sixteenth at the Moody Center. Get over to
the iHeartRadio app look for Am thirteen hundred the zone,
tap that red microphone and leave the word Jason. Jason

(41:25):
is the word of the day to get an opportunity
to win a pair of tickets to go see Jason
Aldean August the twenty six. We're gonna talk Dallas Cowboys
in just the second. But I gotta tell y'all this
story story time with Mike Hall. Yeah, I gotta break
it down for you. So we gotta get music for this.
So I want you to picture your boy Harball Harball

(41:50):
out there doing his thing.

Speaker 3 (41:52):
Well, I'm I'm injured right now. I have an injury.

Speaker 1 (41:56):
So I went to one of my orthopedic surgeons and
I was like, hey, man, I need some help.

Speaker 3 (42:01):
I'm having a shoulder issue.

Speaker 1 (42:03):
Back in the day, I've had multiple shoulder surgeries on
my left shoulder. Well, I was lifting some weights at
the crib and all of a sudden one day it
just felt weird. So I told the doctor took an
X ray. He was like, we got to get in
there and see a little bit more. So we need
you to do an MRI. And I went to the
MRI Tuesday. It was raining, It was that bad day.

Speaker 3 (42:26):
It was awful. Went to it, and I was like,
all right. I walked in.

Speaker 1 (42:31):
I went in there, and the young lady was talking
to me and she was like, hey, Mike, how you
doing blah bah bah. I was like, I'm good. And
I look and I look at the MRI machine. Now
I'm thinking, all right, no problem, no problem. I get
in there, and I have to put my shoulder in

(42:52):
this little harness deal because they got to take the
pictures my shoulder. So I get in there and she
was like, all right, here's their headphones, and here is
this call button, and if things start to feel a
little weird for you, just hit the call button.

Speaker 3 (43:06):
I was like, okay.

Speaker 1 (43:08):
As soon as I got into that tube, my shoulders
hit the side of the tube.

Speaker 3 (43:19):
Oh my goodness. You didn't know.

Speaker 1 (43:21):
I knew I was claustrophobic, but I thought I was
because it's open, you know, it's kind of got the
open end at the other end. So I didn't feel
like I was gonna be suffocating.

Speaker 2 (43:36):
This is hilarious, So we find a lot about it.

Speaker 3 (43:41):
So I hit the button, Mark, I hit it.

Speaker 7 (43:43):
I hit it.

Speaker 1 (43:45):
She was like okay. I was like, no, I'm not.
She was like claustrophobic and I was like, yes, ma'am,
I sure, am.

Speaker 3 (43:53):
Can I get that?

Speaker 10 (43:54):
Man?

Speaker 3 (43:55):
Yet?

Speaker 1 (43:55):
She said you want to take a minute. I said,
I'm gonna take as many minutes as I possibly cared.
I'll call you next week.

Speaker 3 (44:03):
And you didn't do it.

Speaker 1 (44:06):
That's how fast my car started that day. Oh man,
I could not handle it. Man, you could have could
have had a wreck. Texting text the dot, I said, hey, man,
I need I just need you to know that I
didn't get it done.

Speaker 3 (44:21):
He was like claustrophobic. Huh. I was like, how'd you know?

Speaker 1 (44:25):
He said, you text me before your before your appointment.

Speaker 3 (44:29):
What's even over? Oh? God? So I went in. They
got that juice hard, They got that juice now.

Speaker 1 (44:39):
So he told me, he's like, hey, we can help
you out if if you really need to be in there.
I said, I'm gonna do a little rehab first before
I even knew.

Speaker 3 (44:47):
No, no, no, we're not doing that. We're gonna get
this m right. Tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (44:52):
You're gonna go back again and we're gonna give you
a little sleepy time.

Speaker 3 (44:55):
Yeah, and then we're gonna get it done. Bro. You
talk about somebody panicking, Bro, that lady, you're not the
only one. She did not even walk out to go
get ready to do it.

Speaker 2 (45:06):
I was like, Uh, my wife is laughing so hard
right now listening to this because I'm clasophobic too, and
every surgery I had to get an mrin. They had
to give me this sleeping time medicine.

Speaker 3 (45:18):
Yeah, I'm definitely gonna need sleepy time.

Speaker 2 (45:20):
Medicine because I man, you want me to ruin You
want me to ruin you one hundred and twenty thousand
dollars machine. Put me in it, Put me in it.
I'm just gone, don't go ahead, y'all gonna They're gonna
have to get a mop and a room to get
that fixed.

Speaker 3 (45:40):
All that out.

Speaker 1 (45:41):
I want to give a shout out to all the
athletes out there. Listen, when I was younger, I had
no problems getting in those machines.

Speaker 3 (45:51):
I didn't care. It was invincible. As an older trying.

Speaker 12 (45:55):
To be more responsible human being, Hey.

Speaker 2 (45:58):
I want you to have more respect for your boy
because it resumated your twenty two undertaker put me in
a coffin.

Speaker 3 (46:06):
I'm claustrophobic and bro.

Speaker 2 (46:09):
It was the worst six minutes and twenty two seconds
of my life.

Speaker 1 (46:13):
See, the lady lost me I remember that. I hated
that for you because you told me Bro.

Speaker 2 (46:19):
And the Undertaker, if he's listening, he's laughing.

Speaker 3 (46:21):
His ass because he knows you. You had to change
the whole perspective of everything. And he calls me smartus, Smarcus,
you're gonna be all right in there. No, I'm not.
I'm not. The lady you said, what how long? Six?

Speaker 7 (46:42):
What?

Speaker 2 (46:42):
Six minutes and twenty two seconds? The lady told, And
I levitated like diez out of the coffin and ran outside.
When that when look at look at it, when they
cracked it, I'm freety, I'm free, bro, she told me.
She said, Okay, you just gonna relax, and you're only
gonna be in there for eighteen minutes. I said, no,

(47:04):
I'm not, she said. She said, it's only gonna take
about eighteen minutes. I'm like, how many pictures you need?
How many pictures? How long is this gonna take? If
it was my.

Speaker 1 (47:19):
Knee, I've done a full body MRI. But it was
in the open, airy to go in that ain't no problem.

Speaker 3 (47:27):
Like this is upper body that I need so bad?
I need air.

Speaker 7 (47:35):
A.

Speaker 3 (47:36):
Lindsey asked me. She was like, have you told Mark.
Have you told Mark? I was like, no, No, I'm
not feeling nobody about my weaknesses.

Speaker 12 (47:44):
Hey, I'm a karate man. I bring on the inside.
Oh my god, Oh, we're gonna get fired. I. This
is like counseling. This is like counseling.

Speaker 3 (47:55):
I'm glad.

Speaker 1 (47:56):
I'm glad that we can talk this out, man, because
you're was going through it the other day and you
should have seen the right now. I wouldn't talk to
the doctor. The doctor looked at me and he was like,
didn't work out for you? Huh, we can, we can
look out for you. And I was like, hold on, man,
let me think this through. Because you're telling me I
gotta get somebody.

Speaker 3 (48:15):
To drive me.

Speaker 1 (48:16):
I don't need nobody to drive me after what I
give you.

Speaker 3 (48:23):
Yeah, you're gonna need somebody. You're gonna end up in
Fluville on the road that you've never seen before if
you drive. I don't even know that's what's here? Where
am I?

Speaker 2 (48:39):
Yeah, you're gonna have to put a GPS on my
phone to find out neighborhood.

Speaker 1 (48:45):
Oh my goodness, man, I had to share that with
you because it was it's been on my heart, it's
been on my heart and let it out.

Speaker 3 (48:52):
Man, and you came over to safe place.

Speaker 1 (48:54):
You patted me, so I already know if they would
have because they said, if you're gonna do this, the
thing that we gotta shoot die in you. I would
much rather have that. I would much rather have that.
He said, it'll burn a little bit. I'd rather burn
on my shoulder it being claustrophobic in that, MRI too,

(49:15):
so athletes, I appreciate your toughness. I appreciate your ability
to go into the chamber.

Speaker 3 (49:23):
Talk to the doctor and take the medicine. That's what
I'm doing. I've already decided it. I just got to.

Speaker 1 (49:28):
Get my dates right so I can go ahead and
get those pictures done so I'll find out what's really
going on with my shoulder. Because you asked me if
I could go out there and hit. Still, I can hit.
It might be just one swing, though I can't miss
my pitch. I gotta be like Barry.

Speaker 2 (49:44):
I gotta get one pitch, one swing, and I'll be
able to hit it. Coming up next, we will talk
about Texas football.

Speaker 3 (49:52):
That's right.

Speaker 1 (49:53):
Josh Peiy and coach Sarkisi and sat down for a
great lengthy conversation and we'll hear more from coach, and
of course we got the World's Strongest Tank coming up
after that right here on the Morning Kickoff on sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back to the
morning kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred

(50:14):
The Zone. Coming up in the next segment, we got
the World's Strongest Tank by the World's Strongest.

Speaker 3 (50:20):
Out of order right now, like like I'm done, Yeah
it is.

Speaker 1 (50:25):
It is a teacher appreciation and I appreciate all the
teachers that are out there with the kids. But it's
also it was story time about the MRI machine, and
my boy sent me this. He said, MRI. MRI stands
for minimum room in that piece.

Speaker 3 (50:48):
Oh man, all the people, man.

Speaker 2 (50:50):
There's so many people that identify with that that just
start calling sending me messages.

Speaker 3 (50:56):
They get it. Man, it's rough, it's rough, man, Benji Young,
what's up?

Speaker 1 (51:00):
Man? A lot of folks identify with that story because
a lot of people don't want.

Speaker 3 (51:06):
To be in that piece me evecuse.

Speaker 1 (51:09):
So I wanted to get into this conversation because as always,
you know as well as I do, Texas football is
always at the forefront of a lot of people's minds
around here, and Coach Shark has been making the tours
and making the rounds, and hopefully we get Coach Shark
on in the coming week so he can talk to
us as well. But there are some conversations that are

(51:31):
being had, and one of the main conversations is how
do you communicate with players at this particular time, how
do you handle disgruntled players?

Speaker 3 (51:40):
And what do I mean.

Speaker 1 (51:41):
By that is guys are always looking for the next
option right you get into the portal and you're starting
to understand why am I not playing?

Speaker 3 (51:53):
Why am I this? Why am I that?

Speaker 1 (51:55):
So Coach Shark says that they have a very brutally
honest way of letting you know where you staying with them.

Speaker 3 (52:03):
If I'm that kid.

Speaker 5 (52:04):
Right now and I'm running with the twos or three
at slot receiver and I think I should be starting,
what kind of information are you giving me and how
are you delivering it in a way that is blunt
but also in a way that shows we want you here.
Just cause you're starting right now doesn't mean you're not
going to eventually play for us.

Speaker 6 (52:21):
Well, let's here's one example. Let's go with Spring balls done. Okay,
And we have a really simple form that gets filled
out by our academic department on every player.

Speaker 3 (52:32):
He's got a form. Here.

Speaker 6 (52:33):
Here's Josh Pate Boom. Here's how he's doing academically. Here's
our strength and conditioning coach Tory Beck is going to
fill out how he's doing in the weight room.

Speaker 3 (52:41):
Boom.

Speaker 6 (52:42):
Here's his position coach. Here's his strengths, weaknesses, things to
work on.

Speaker 3 (52:45):
Boom.

Speaker 6 (52:46):
Here's the training room. Here's how he's taking care of
his body. Here's where you're at, Boom. Here's coach Sark's
comments about any issues that he may have had off
the field. Okay, that's a snapshot of where you're at.
And then I sit down with each player say hey,
here's where you're at. Okay, here's where you can improve
and when you can be honest with them and you
can show it to them. Now, there's not but this

(53:06):
but that, No, no, no, this is this is exactly
where you sit, and this is exactly where you stand.

Speaker 3 (53:10):
That's the first part.

Speaker 6 (53:11):
In the last three drafts alone, we've had twenty eight
players drafted. Well, now those things are reality in our
building and and the fact that they can look to
their peers who they.

Speaker 3 (53:22):
Watch develop and watch grow and now having that.

Speaker 6 (53:25):
Opportunity to say, hey, you know what, this is kind
of the blueprint and I may not be where I'm
supposed to be right now, but if I keep working,
if I keep doing things the right way, that can
become a reality for me down the road.

Speaker 2 (53:37):
Well I love that, right, I love that. That's that's
that's all you want is to be clear. And a
lot of times, you know, my my my cousin just
went through it at Memphis, like he got promised, this
promise that oh we're gonna play you, yeah, you gonna play,
and yeah, Travis Hunter in front of him, Tyree's Hunter

(54:00):
and he didn't play. So you know that that's a
non negotiable you. You said you were gonna do this, Like,
don't mislead the kids, give them the direction and tell
them what they really need to know. But let me
ask you this, And I don't know your your cousin
at all, but if he is not performing, is it

(54:22):
fair to believe that you deserve to play? If practice,
if you're not learning the situation and doing the things
that they are asking of you, is that a fair assessment?
It is a fair assessment if that was one of
the qualifiers. When he did play, he was always in
the in the plus like he had a strong plus minus.

Speaker 3 (54:45):
He was a great player.

Speaker 2 (54:47):
Uh won three state championships, was a McDonald's All American,
played Jared Harris as a monster, and now he's going
to a school because he just wants to play.

Speaker 3 (54:59):
It's not about the money.

Speaker 2 (55:00):
It's not about buy me this buy me that, you know,
give me a bag with this amount of money in it.
Like it's none of that like themselves be even where
I'm from, right like, and some people just there's a
bunch of kids.

Speaker 3 (55:13):
That just want to play.

Speaker 2 (55:14):
But with nil, Now you got twenty two to twenty
four year twenty seven year old kids that are on
their seventh year playing sports.

Speaker 3 (55:24):
So how can an eighteen year.

Speaker 2 (55:26):
Old kid, you know, go in there and compete against
a twenty five year old grown man Because a twenty
five year old Mark Henry.

Speaker 3 (55:34):
Would laugh, would laugh at.

Speaker 2 (55:37):
Eighteen year old Mark Henry, right, So like that's that's
the situation college sports is in right now. Well, and
that's why you continue to look at it and try
to find out what's next and how do you continue
to get better as a player because everything is not
always going to be as it seems. Another thing to

(55:59):
look at too, and Coach Stark talked about this. A
lot of people are talking about why didn't Quinn go
take the money? If he had an opportunity to go elsewhere,
Why is it that he decided that he wanted to
stay at Texas or go tech.

Speaker 6 (56:13):
Everybody is is got to comment about a kid who
leaves the school and goes to another school for more money.
How could he do that? This is college football?

Speaker 10 (56:24):
Now?

Speaker 6 (56:24):
What's going on with college football? All of a sudden,
here's Quinn yours who decides not to go to another
school to say, you know what, I've left a legacy
at the University of Texas. I'm going to go chase
my dreams and fulfill my dreams of playing in the NFL.
And now those same critics, those same people are saying,
how could he not go take that money?

Speaker 5 (56:43):
Are you suggesting hypocrisy?

Speaker 6 (56:44):
I just, you know, sometimes I just I wonder, you know,
I wonder that. You know, who are we to judge
and criticize a young man who's making a decision about
his future, who's only done things the right way?

Speaker 3 (56:58):
To the best of his ability.

Speaker 6 (57:00):
Who gave everything he could to our program and decided,
you know what, now's my time. It's time for me
to go on the next journey of life, and that's
trying to go play quarterback in the National Football League.
And we're here to support him, but to criticize him
for not taking the money, Like, what are we talking about?

Speaker 3 (57:16):
Hard?

Speaker 2 (57:17):
Why would Quinn ruin everything that he is a mass
When he's done with the NFL, he can come back
to Austin. Every business in this city is gonna be
like quinn yours?

Speaker 3 (57:34):
Yes it is. Sometimes it's worth more than money.

Speaker 2 (57:39):
Right, You're gonna go to Louisiana Tech for eight million dollars.

Speaker 3 (57:43):
They don't have eight million dollars give a quarterback.

Speaker 2 (57:46):
But you you know what I mean, you're gonna go
somewhere else and just take the money. It's not that
that when that money is spent and run out and
it's affected your legacy, it's not worth it.

Speaker 1 (57:59):
Well, and that's why you know, when you start to
hear from these people that number, Right, what's to say
that Quinn if he was gonna if Quinn was gonna
stay in college, do you think he wanted to leave Texas, right,
I mean, like, why would I want to leave to

(58:20):
go somewhere else after he again, here is the quarterback
of a team that was went to the college football
Playoffs final four that he took him to twice.

Speaker 2 (58:33):
I think out of respect for the future of the program,
he went ahead and did his thing. That's why while
you're while everybody's criticizing him once again, here he is
being selfless giving you Arch Manny exactly.

Speaker 4 (58:50):
He gave it to you. And what more else could
he do? Like you went to two deep playoff runs.
It's like what else? What else is there?

Speaker 2 (58:58):
I mean he could win an win it, but you
know what, like Arch was on deck and rather than
him going you know what, man, I'm moving the gold post.
I want to stay yep, but I want eight million. Yeah,
that would have been that would have been a problem.
That would have been a problem.

Speaker 1 (59:18):
That would have been a problem because he number one,
he probably wouldn't have got it. Well, here's the thing.
He didn't take money from Texas or the collect He
never took money from the collector. And the thing is
the same thing with with Arch. Arch isn't getting money
from the collective. They are truly using nil in their
favor by being able to achieve this at this level

(59:42):
by all outside entities.

Speaker 2 (59:44):
In wrestling, you go to the undertaker, Goldberg, Steve Austin,
the Rock, thank you for the house. We always thank
the main event guy for the house. Thank you for
the money you drew because you're drawing that was the
undertaker of that program. Those guys should walk up and

(01:00:05):
be like, hey, man, thanks for the house because they
got paid more because he didn't take money from the
money that they were drawing from.

Speaker 3 (01:00:12):
Right Like, I'm telling you, man, like.

Speaker 2 (01:00:14):
It's a respect thing that people are not giving Quinn
that I want him to.

Speaker 1 (01:00:19):
Have exactly, and they need to put some respect on
his name.

Speaker 3 (01:00:23):
Let me see im.

Speaker 1 (01:00:23):
Let me look at my phone real quick to see
if Gooch is like, stop talking about it. Coming up next,
we've got the world Strongest Man bringing you the world's
strongest take right here on the More. They kick off
on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. He's known
as the World's Strongest Men. He's also a WWE Hall

(01:00:46):
of Famer, but right now he's the guy that always
brings you his world strongest take.

Speaker 3 (01:00:54):
Take it away, Big fellow, Larch. What's happening? You know
what time it is? What Thomas?

Speaker 2 (01:00:59):
It's time for the world's strongest take by the world's
strongest man, Marcus. Back then they didn't know me. Now
I'm hot. They are all all man guys. I'm here
to give you my take. And my take is this

(01:01:20):
the setup before the big before the work. Steph Carey
is an elder statesman of the NBA All time greatest
three point shooter. But like I said, he's an elder statesman. Now,

(01:01:42):
how many of y'all been to the family reunion, You've
been to the party, You've been to the park, you've
been to a festival. And two old guys about forty
years old start talking trashed each other about.

Speaker 3 (01:01:57):
Who's the fastest.

Speaker 2 (01:01:59):
I'm still you, Charlie Ray, No, you're not.

Speaker 3 (01:02:04):
Line up.

Speaker 2 (01:02:06):
And what happens They take off running and one of
them hamstring pops and they fall down on the ground
and everybody's laughing. This is not a laughing matter. This
is life. Steph Carrey is a older guy that has
a Grade one spring in his hamstring. He warmed up

(01:02:31):
very good before that game. It wasn't it wasn't a
situation where Oh, he was just like a days ago,
talking to the coach, shooting the crap with the referees,
and you know, playing with kids in the crowd. He
was working, he was warming up sufficiently, warmed up. What
happened to him is time Father time said here you

(01:02:56):
go take this with you, and the diagnosis is you
need at least eleven days of rest.

Speaker 3 (01:03:09):
Steph Curry says he could do it sooner.

Speaker 2 (01:03:13):
I want to know why does Steph Curry in his
camp think that his damn near forty year old body
is different than everybody else's. You have got to listen
to your doctors. If the doctors say take eleven days off,

(01:03:34):
take eleven days off. Yes, you're gonna miss the next
two games. Yes, your team may end up two to one,
But isn't it worth it to heal up sufficiently or

(01:03:56):
you go in and you rupture.

Speaker 3 (01:04:01):
We can rebuild him, we have the technology.

Speaker 2 (01:04:05):
Yeah you might be rebuild him, but he gonna miss
the rest of the season. There will be no finals
for you, sir ah. And I'm just saying this. My
take is this, the coach, the ownership should override the player.

(01:04:31):
They shouldn't let him hurt himself.

Speaker 3 (01:04:34):
Which and then would hurt them.

Speaker 1 (01:04:37):
What say you, well, I mean you start to look
at what he's been able to do, and you wonder
why he's trying to come back. It's because he understands
where he is too as a ballplayer. He understands that
this might be my last hurrah in these situations. This

(01:04:59):
might be his way of saying in his mind that
I've got to come back because this might be our
best opportunity to win it all.

Speaker 3 (01:05:09):
Now, I do.

Speaker 1 (01:05:10):
Understand that a hamstring is not what it was when
he was twenty seven, twenty eight years old. I do understand,
and I think he understands that his opportunity of finding
a way to be able to get back on the field,
it's gonna be a lot of work for him. He's
thirty seven years old. Man, he's almost forty. Lebron's forty.

Speaker 2 (01:05:36):
Yeah, But if Lebron got injury, he like he did
with that growing he missed fourteen games.

Speaker 1 (01:05:44):
Everybody ain't built the same when it comes to wanting
to be back out there.

Speaker 3 (01:05:47):
Steph was that's true.

Speaker 2 (01:05:48):
I know he wants to be out there, and it's
imperative that they have him to win this series. But
it's a Grade one spring, so just take it as
it is and go ahead and miss these next two games,
right right, If you're down two to one, then at
least you are you have the ability to come in

(01:06:09):
and help your team tie it up, make it too too,
rather than go out there and tear it or rupture
it and then you be done for the rest of
this year because you gotta.

Speaker 1 (01:06:20):
Go have surgery and the season be over anyway. And
the season is gonna be over anyway. He can do,
so that's what he's looking at it. He's like, well,
there is no tomorrow. Remember Rocky, you can't win rock
There is no tomorrow. But seriously, you look at and
what he's thinking in his mind is Okay, I can

(01:06:40):
sit out this game. I can possibly sit out two
more two games, and then I can try to come back,
because yes you can. You may feel good until like
you said, Uncle.

Speaker 3 (01:06:51):
ROI you think you can still get me in the
forty pop pop? Is that check engine light?

Speaker 1 (01:06:58):
Oh he's running red he redlining like oh man, But yes,
you start to look at at what he's been able
to do. But for real, in his mind and his
heart of hearts, he believes I don't want to know.

Speaker 3 (01:07:12):
What you think, though, I don't care what Steph carry think.

Speaker 2 (01:07:15):
I already know what he thinks better than everybody.

Speaker 3 (01:07:18):
He can come back.

Speaker 1 (01:07:19):
I think he should probably be ready to go by
game five.

Speaker 3 (01:07:23):
I think he.

Speaker 1 (01:07:23):
Should be Yeah, definitely, all right, you know, yeah, I
don't think he's able to play, because if he does,
he's gonna he's definitely gonna snap it before that. But
at least give yourself a chance, give yourself an opportunity
to go out there and get a chance to play
in games.

Speaker 3 (01:07:44):
What happens, and possibly we will be talking about it
next week.

Speaker 1 (01:07:48):
Well, they play the night, so he's already out for
the night. That's one game, so we will see what
happens at the end when it's time for them to
go out there and check it out. So it'll be
very interesting to see how they finished this up. It's
a sad situation with him having that injury. Jimmy Butler
told us, it just show him how important he is.

(01:08:10):
He is our best player, so we got to see
what's happening with that.

Speaker 3 (01:08:13):
But this he's gotta show up, buddy.

Speaker 2 (01:08:16):
He'll just got to keep hitting threes and some of
those guys on the bench. Are gonna have to Colomba
and Trey Davis, Trace Davis, got it. They gotta step up, man,
That's all it is to it. Yep, Like you pay him,
That's why you pay him all that money.

Speaker 1 (01:08:34):
Yeah, so this is uh, this is that time. That's
why you lift all the weights. That's why you do this.
You can't win rock. We gotta find the way to
get it done. We're gonna close out the show and
send you to Dan Patrick. Two former Texas Longhorns decide
to call it quits, and it's not because they wanted to.

(01:08:57):
Right here on the Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone, what a great, great show, And
if you missed any parts of the show, make sure
you get over to our podcast page on the new
and improved iHeartRadio app. You can just type in the
Morning Kickoff and you'll get a chance to let us
know exactly and get to hear exactly what we were

(01:09:20):
talking about. Also, make sure you start looking at us
on our social media is because we are on YouTube, LinkedIn.
We also broadcast on Twitter on AM thirteen hundred The
Zone and of course on the Facebook pages and we
also retweek part of the show.

Speaker 3 (01:09:39):
I'm sure you're gonna get.

Speaker 1 (01:09:40):
Some laughs today as we had a story time with
with your boy Harball. And I'm not a fan of
Mriyes or the machine, so just so you know that.

Speaker 3 (01:09:52):
But I do want to say this.

Speaker 1 (01:09:54):
Because these two guys have had an opportunity to spend
a lot of time getting in and they have now
decided that it's time to walk away. Two former Texas
Longhorn football players have decided medically that they are retiring
from football. One of them is Utah quarterback Cam Rising.

(01:10:17):
Cam Rising has medically decided to retire from football, he
announced on Wednesday via his social media and it comes
after having a hand injury against Baylor last season. He says,
due to a hand injury I suffered it during the
Baylor game. I have been advised by two orthopedic surgeons,

(01:10:42):
two orthopedic physicians, and I will never be able to
play football again. I'm going to obtain a third medical
opinion and we'll undergo the recommended surgery. I will continue
to rehab and to do it to get healthy, but
in the meantime, I'm forced to medically retire from the
game that I love. Now we saw Cam rising when

(01:11:05):
he came to the University of Texas. I thought he
was gonna end up being the starting quarterback at one point.
He came in the recruiting class with Casey Thompson and
both of those guys got a chance to play here.
Hudson Card ended up coming as well, but he ended
up going to Utah and having a great career in Utah.
Another gentleman that has decided to walk away from football

(01:11:30):
is one Brew McCoy Breo McCoy, who was one hell
of a football player that during his time of recruitment,
everybody was in love with Brew McCoy.

Speaker 3 (01:11:41):
He ended up going to USC.

Speaker 1 (01:11:43):
Came to Texas, went to USE, went back and forth
between Texas and USC. We thought at one point he
was coming back. This was a guy that was in
high school. He played multiple positions, and we thought he
was going to be a big time player at the
University of Texas well. He announced also on Tuesday night
via his social media that he is being forced to

(01:12:06):
medically retire as well. He had an ankle injury, and
he also told a bunch of teams that he did
not want them to draft him during the NFL Draft
because he knew that this day was possibly going to come.
He said, First and foremost, I want to thank my
family for everything that they have invested in me during

(01:12:27):
my journey and always standing by my side while I
was playing the sport that God blessed me to be
gifted in the past eighteen years. Additionally, thank you to
all my coaches and my teammates throughout the years for
the support in guiding me every step of the way.
It is with a heavy heart, but I feel it
with gratitude that I'm shared with you guys that I

(01:12:48):
made the difficult decision to retire from football this one.
This has been one of the toughest decisions in my life.
But after careful considerations with my doctor, family and the
people closest to me, I've come to the conclusion that
this is the right path for my long term health
and well being.

Speaker 2 (01:13:08):
You know, it's a it's a hard game, man, It's
very hard and very game, very physical, and at least
let the respect that these guys garner and the honor
that you receive from your peers when you're able to say,
hey man, I gotta put it down yep and shout

(01:13:30):
out the brew man to be able to say, hey,
don't don't draft me. Yep, you know, like I'm not
going to play. I'm I'm at that point where I
can't play anymore.

Speaker 3 (01:13:42):
Like I respect that a lot.

Speaker 1 (01:13:44):
Yeah, it's a difficult situation, especially when you know all
the blood, sweat and tears that have gone into that
journey to be able to be an elite player at
the next level. And you know as well as I
do with playing in the backyard, you playing with your buddies,
you're going through it all. Your ultimate goal, whatever sport

(01:14:05):
it may be, is to be at the mountaintop, and
NFL is the pinnacle. It is an opportunity to be
recognized as such. So it is it is a difficult
decision by all of those guys to be able to
walk away and say that they gave it their all.

Speaker 3 (01:14:24):
Yeah, a lot of us.

Speaker 2 (01:14:25):
Have more miles than a Greyhound bus and we still
try to get out there and do it and we
joke around, you know, with the you know forcing it, yeah,
and being up in age, it just comes a day
where you have to just you know, even the Bible says,
as you got to put your childish things down, so

(01:14:48):
you at some point you got to let you know,
let life happen and go ahead and buy out gracefully.

Speaker 3 (01:14:56):
Yeah, it is. Uh, it's one of those things.

Speaker 1 (01:14:58):
Then life comes at you fast, man, it comes at
you fast. Also, we want to give a shout out
to the great.

Speaker 3 (01:15:06):
Folks over at twin Peaks.

Speaker 1 (01:15:08):
Twin Peaks has been a major contributor and a sponsor
here and I endorse twin Peaks. Obviously you've heard some
of the commercials from twin Peaks, but I want to
thank twin Peaks. They helped us with their draft party
two years in a row. We had a great time,
had great opportunities. So we're thankful for them. And if
there's a product or a situation or something that you

(01:15:33):
want us to endorse for, you reach out to us.
Hit us up on our social media's at Harball, hearts
at d Mark Henry on Twitter, Instagram, or even Facebook.
Hit us up and let us know if we can
help you out and help endorse your product.

Speaker 2 (01:15:50):
Yeah, shout out the mom Foods man and Delicate testsing
like you got to get over there and try guys.
Best for stromy I ever had and I've been this,
I've been to cats is like that.

Speaker 3 (01:16:03):
This is the best.

Speaker 1 (01:16:04):
Well, just so you know, you you haven't encouraged our
guy to go over there.

Speaker 3 (01:16:10):
He's been over there.

Speaker 1 (01:16:11):
In a matter of fact, he's gone over there multiple times,
so you've done it.

Speaker 3 (01:16:15):
