Texas followed by your message to eight one five three zero.
Standard data and message rates may apply. And we also
(01:51):
will give you a chance to win a pair of
tickets to go see Dirk's Bentley.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
That's right, Dirk's Bentley.
Speaker 1 (01:57):
You'll get a chance to win a pair of tickets
to go see him by using that new and improved
iHeart Radio app.
Speaker 3 (02:03):
You know how that gets down.
Speaker 1 (02:05):
You leave the keyword of the day, you get a
chance to win. Well, let's get right into it, because
yesterday in the NBA things continue to roll the Indiana
Pacers Way. And I told y'all before I left yesterday
that Halliburton's Daddy was going to be in the house promps,
(02:27):
and I said, he is going to show out. Now,
don't call me black Stradamis. Don't call me that. I
just know this that when your people are back in
the fold, you tend to show out. And all he
did was give you a performance of a lifetime.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
In the four.
Speaker 5 (02:58):
How this series is gone, CALIVERT long, I'm freeing.
Speaker 6 (03:05):
This looks like get to hear his road off. It's
right here, Gators, ms las and Aliburton's.
Speaker 4 (03:13):
What's on the breaks?
Speaker 3 (03:15):
Who's it good for the entire sports throw yet?
Speaker 7 (03:19):
So anybody's the offer on the defection that number three
on that Halliburing the time.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
As that question, I just looking over his shoulders, so
to speak. Call heard your cost bier. If I'm realized, Wow,
this is.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
At the time right inside of steel and giving it
right back Caliver we're doing free and recently mixcommunication by.
Speaker 8 (03:43):
The next there's a great player for Indiana.
Speaker 6 (03:47):
So you can't put too much.
Speaker 9 (03:50):
Calivert where he's hearing in his true sure hid you
know he's val prone.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
Got to continue to go at him, Pett call him
Horde that number.
Speaker 10 (04:02):
Halliburton, Oh no, no, I'm the move.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
Hall Burton, Halliburton almost had a triple double by halftime.
He ended up getting a triple double thirty two points,
fifteen assists.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
In twelve rebounds. And let's just say, the Knicks ready
to go night night, Ready go night night. No, no,
night night, they going night night, They going to Galvus. Yeah,
did you hear that?
Speaker 2 (04:45):
That's my son, And the most important thing that you
that you left out there zero turnovers.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
Zero turnovers. That's right, that's right.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
You play a full NBA game and you're the catalyst
and you're pushing it and you're giving the assists and
you're running off and you don't get one turnover.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
Yep, that's locked in. That is definitely locked in.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
But it makes it even better because his team as
a whole only had eleven turnovers up against the seventeen
that the Knicks had.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
I just want to understand this.
Speaker 1 (05:24):
When we talked about going into the playoffs and what
the expectations were at the very beginning, we also talked
about the fact that the Indiana Pacers Tyrese Haliburton, what
was it most.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
Overrated player in the NBA.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
Now we found out that it was only a small
group of people that voted that actually put in the
vote and they were basically hating. But when you look
at what Tyrese Haliburton has been able to do. Going
back to the trash talk with Damian Lillard for the Bucks,
(06:03):
you talk about Tyresee's dad getting in Giannis's face and
then continuing to roll throughout these playoffs. They've shown up
and done what they were supposed to do. But at
the end of the season, everybody was talking about Holibert.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
They were talking to.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
Buzz about how good he played the last twenty games
of the season.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
He looked like a star.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
Yep, And I thought he looked like a start the
entire season, but it just turned up and not you.
Now he gets into the playoffs and man, he becomes
a giant killer.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
And as we talked about before, we'll get into the
New York Knicks in just the second, but we talked
about his father being back in the crib, being able
to show up at the game.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
Now he couldn't sit on his courtside seats. He had
to be up in. That's gonna be another year or two.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
B he gets craz he got a restraining order, and
now he gets a chance to go back out there.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
Tree and now, Tyrese talked about his pops.
Speaker 5 (07:05):
I know we're saying free Pops and Pops is free,
but he was not in jail. He happened to be
in a very beautiful home sitting very pretty watching NBA basketball.
He's just fun. So yeah, I was happy he was
in the building. Obviously, Triple H's in the Villion that
might have been a little I like I say, it
was more special, but Triple hb in the Vilay was
(07:26):
pretty fire too.
Speaker 1 (07:28):
And that's what you look at and you say, wow, man,
this continues to be that that movement, that movement of
being able to handle the spotlight and do the things
that you're capable of.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
Yeah, I told you he was a big wrestling fan.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
But the thing that's the most important about Halli Burden
is he's an actual complete point guard and a guy
that can get you a triple double if needed. If
you wanted to give forty points, he could do that too,
right he The only development that I can see next
year happening in his game is to be able to guard, uh,
(08:06):
the smaller guards. You know, he has trouble staying in
front of the smaller quick guards, and that's just development
he's a young player, I mean, wasn't and it's tough
for a lot of people to.
Speaker 3 (08:19):
Stay in front of them small.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
I mean, it's like it's like in football garden guys
in the slot, but you have great corners in the
NFL that can't really guard the guys in those little
small jitibug guys right right. And that's why, you know,
you start to look at all of these different things
that are happening with the Indiana Pacers. They're one win
away from getting to the NBA Finals. But you also
(08:44):
get a chance to look at the New York Knicks.
The New York Knicks were a team that everybody was
riding high, especially if you were from New York.
Speaker 1 (08:52):
Everybody was all excited about. And now you're starting to
look at it and seeing the flaws. Last night, Annaobe
played well, but he didn't play great. He was one
of seven from three point land. You start looking at
Miles Bridges, somebody that you thought, not you, but I'm
saying you thought was going to be an integral part
(09:15):
of the success of this team. And of course you
got Jalen Brunson, who you know, as much as we
give shay Gil, Chris Alexander Crap for falling on the
ground and trying to get these calls.
Speaker 3 (09:28):
He does the exact same thing, and then you got.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
This move by Thibodeau to start Mitchell Robinson, and I
still don't get it. I still don't understand the reason
why you started. He was minus twenty in plus minus.
He's been bad every single time if you look at
the plus minuses. So I'm kind of confused about what
his thought process was for that.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
I think they in his mind.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
It is just my assessment of the matter is they
thought that he could defend in the in the post
and car Anthony Towns could play a glorified forward scorer
position whether it be small or or power and it
just didn't work because Mitchell Robinson, for all the effort
(10:18):
that he put in, uh, he just he's not an
NBA starter and.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
His scoring.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
When you have a guy that you don't have to
worry about scoring, like I don't have to defend him
unless it's a pick and roll and he's going to
the basket for a dump, you can allegate for the
four guys to UH to you a strong defensive effort
because you don't have to worry about him.
Speaker 1 (10:45):
And Josh Hart, who is being considered he's the one
that's coming off the bench now because of Mitchell Robinson.
He still had more rebounds than Mitchell Robinson. He played
better than Mitchell Robinson. So I'm just curious to what
Thibodeau or thought, because now you move Pascal Siakam, you
can let him play on the outside, can't cover him.
(11:06):
You got Nie Smith who is playing mad defense, and
Miles Turner can shoot the ball from all over the place.
So I don't understand where the matchup was supposed to be.
Speaker 3 (11:17):
But as you know, three games to one.
Speaker 1 (11:20):
Can the Knicks make a move and change their outcome?
Speaker 3 (11:24):
I don't see it happen. I'm plugging the amp.
Speaker 1 (11:27):
They might just get one, but they ain't getting two.
I don't believe that can happen. Coming up next, Coach
Sharp was in destined for SEC meetings, and we get
a chance to hear from him and a couple of
other folks that made the trip down there as well.
Right here on a hump day, way back Wednesday edition
of the Morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio Am
(11:50):
thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back to the Morning Kickoff
right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone,
Mike Harballhard WWE Hall of Famer and strongest Man the
Mark Henry, and of course Marcus is holding it down
on the boards. Coming up in the next segment, we
will have Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman as
(12:11):
he breaks down the Texas regional as the Texas Longhorn
baseball team gets ready to play this Friday one pm
first pitch.
Speaker 3 (12:22):
Against Houston Christian.
Speaker 1 (12:24):
We also have k State and UTSA in this regional bracket,
so it's gonna be a lot of fun for Texas Baseball.
Softball gets kicked off tomorrow at eleven am in Oklahoma
as they get ready to take on Florida. The Florida
Gators come in one of the hottest teams in the country.
(12:46):
And if you missed our conversation yesterday with the head
softball coach Mike White, get over to our podcast page
and search for the morning kickoff and you'll see our
interview with Mike Why. Speaking of interview, coach Sarkisian and
all of the SEC is in Destin, Florida for their
(13:10):
SEC Winter meetings, and there's a lot of topics that
are being discussed during this time college football playoffs. Greg
Sanke's out there talking about the college football playoffs, and
that seems to be the conversation for most of them.
But as usual, when the Texas media goes, they want
to talk a lot about Texas and the expectations of
(13:32):
the upcoming season. And here's coach Shark with his opening statement,
followed by some conversation that we'll get into about Arch many.
Speaker 8 (13:43):
Already k go to see everybody. He's got nice hands
down here in Florida.
Speaker 3 (13:47):
It's good.
Speaker 8 (13:50):
Kind of an exciting time of the year, you know.
I always say that in our sport.
Speaker 11 (13:55):
It's kind of, you know, kind of check marks along
the year where you're at, and this is off one
of them.
Speaker 8 (14:00):
When he comes to spring meetings to know that, you know, summers.
Speaker 11 (14:04):
Right around the corner, will getting back with our players
and getting ready to go for the fall.
Speaker 8 (14:07):
So, like I said, it's good.
Speaker 1 (14:09):
See everybody, and he's excited to see everybody because he
knows that, as he said, summers around the corner. But
more importantly, they're getting ready for the players to come
back and start working out. They'll be able to see
them and not really work out with them. That's where
your guy Torri Beck then kind of takes over and
gets these guys right for the regular season. It's gonna
(14:32):
be hot, gonna be real hot, but they're gonna get
that work in. They're gonna be ready to go. But
you also know that in the next month or two June,
I think it's July the fifteenth is when we have
SEC media Days, and now you're even closer to the
season getting ready to be started. But one of the
biggest question marks and mark we'll get into the Heisman
(14:55):
hype and all that other things that go with that
is the arch man.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
Arch Manning is always going to.
Speaker 1 (15:02):
Be the conversation, and people continue to put him at
the top of the draft. I was driving in this
morning and I heard our guy Brady Quinn uh to
two Pros and a cup of Joe that are on
right before us. He was talking about, oh, the Saints
are tanking so they can get arch Manning and decision exactly.
(15:25):
I just really don't see arch Manning. First off, he's
got to play a full season, number one, number two,
what says he's gonna come out. I honestly believe that
the kid truly loves college and It's not a necessity
for him to be the guy coming out after playing
(15:48):
one season to possibly be a number one overall pick.
Speaker 3 (15:52):
I really think he enjoys college. And then both of
them his uncles finished. They that's word on the street.
That's word on the street.
Speaker 1 (16:02):
So to me, I just think this entire conversation is
I'm not gonna say overblown, because he does deserve the hype,
but let's let him play, let him get on the field,
let him play a full season, not just little snippets
here and there. Play the full season so he can
go through the trials and tribulation of being a big
(16:26):
time quarterback at a big time school with all the
pressure on you, and and.
Speaker 2 (16:31):
Our opinions might change. Right, he might have a nuclear season. Right,
he might win the national championship, absolutely break break college
football records. Then we could say, well, I don't know
if there's anything listen for exactly, let's get there before
all of this, Oh tank for him, he's coming out next.
(16:54):
I'm like, they don't know, they don't know, they don't
get it, and if they lose a season, the general
manage just should be fired. I'm going on recon saying,
right now, any team that goes to or one of
anything for the season, and they think, Okay, I'm being
the arch man in sweet Steaks and he comes back
(17:15):
to college, Oh my gosh, fire them on the spot.
Speaker 7 (17:20):
Fire.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
And the funny thing about that is good job, Mark.
And the funny thing about that is if that is
true and people are trying to do that, they all
need to be fired because of the simple fact they
didn't do their homework. Yes, like we're sitting here right now,
gave options of why he may not come out.
Speaker 3 (17:40):
One, the kid likes college.
Speaker 2 (17:44):
And number two, both of his uncles, Ye did they graduated.
They came out their senior years.
Speaker 12 (17:56):
And the key with the man is are like, he's
in a family that has money, so he doesn't need
to come out to feed his family or rush to
come out in that situation desperate for money.
Speaker 1 (18:09):
And he also has now endorsement deals, right, so it's
not like he's poor exactly and making ten million dollars.
He can stay here and make more than what his
rookie contract is going to be. But let's hear what
coach Sark had to say about march Manning.
Speaker 8 (18:26):
We've definitely tried to you know, I've been fortunate.
Speaker 11 (18:30):
I think in our era of coaching, you could probably say,
you know, Nick sab and Pete Carroll are two of
the top three, maybe four coaches in my era of
a young coach growing up in our profession. It's always
very fortunate that way. So I've got great experience that
I that I definitely lean into. But I also think
that we have to forever evolve, you know, we have
(18:52):
to continually adapt to the new player, the new times,
the new regiment, the new the new things that are
that are put on our player's plates and what's best
for us. It's easy to do what you've done before.
That's that's the easy thing to do. And sometimes it's
more difficult to to step outside of the box and
(19:14):
to get a little bit uncomfortable and to maybe just
start to do things a little bit differently, having your
team's best interest in mind. And that's what we tried
to do while we were here, all the while not
not losing sight of what's our foundational.
Speaker 3 (19:31):
We can play.
Speaker 1 (19:32):
We played player development, But let me get back to
the Arch conversation. We'll hear player development next, but let's
hear let's hear from about Arch many.
Speaker 3 (19:41):
Yeah, I don't.
Speaker 11 (19:41):
I don't know if you can insulate it not not anymore,
you know, I don't know when Peyton was around.
Speaker 8 (19:47):
I don't know if there were cell phones and all
those things.
Speaker 11 (19:50):
Right, So it's a little different, a little different time
and a little different era, uh than than what our
guys operate in now. You guys all didn't have Twitter
accounts back then, you and you didn't report instantaneously, and
you didn't just retweet what the next.
Speaker 8 (20:04):
Guy wrote about because that's kind of what you guys
do now.
Speaker 11 (20:07):
That's fine, okay, But the idea of that for Arch,
part of coming to the University of Texas is building
that brand, is getting some of that exposure.
Speaker 8 (20:19):
And so yes, do we support him as much as
we can, like.
Speaker 11 (20:22):
We do all of our players. But it's also a
great platform for our guys and so it's not all negative.
There's a lot of positives to this. But at the
end of the day, for a guy like Arch in
this instance, I want to make sure that he enjoys
this experience too. Right, here's lifelong dream, right of being
the starting quarterback of the University of Texas.
Speaker 8 (20:44):
Now it's his opportunity. I want to make sure that
he has a great experience. Part of that is the exposure.
Speaker 11 (20:49):
Part of that is protecting him and putting some guardrails
up on that so that he can enjoy the experience.
Speaker 3 (20:55):
And that's the other part of it too, Mark.
Speaker 1 (20:57):
You know, enjoying the experience goes back to what we
said about him loving being a college student, but most
importantly enjoying the experience of the grind of every day
as the starting quarterback. The film study, I know he
was doing it before because he never knew when he
was one play away, But the reality of the conversation
(21:18):
is always going to be what can I do better?
How good can I truly truly be? The upside in
the ceiling is as far as he wants it to go.
But the main thing is I have to be very
very consistent every single day, from my workouts, from my
(21:39):
play calling, from knowing the plays. And that's where coach Sark,
Coach Milwie, and the offensive side of the ball are
definitely gonna have to dive into that.
Speaker 2 (21:49):
We had to also get into that take about what
this offense really is going to be next year.
Speaker 1 (21:54):
Yeah, when we come back, we're gonna talk to Danny
Davis of the Austin, American State and find out what
he thinks about all this SEC stuff right here on
the morning Kickoff on Sports Radio and thirteen hundred this.

Speaker 1 (27:36):
We get a chance to talk to our guy, Danny
Davis of the Austin American Statesman. You can follow him
at Underscore Danny Davis and Danny. We'll get into the
baseball conversation in just a moment. But yesterday, during his
time at the SEC meetings, coach Sark was asked about
the college football playoffs, the expectations coming into the sea
(28:00):
and oh yeah, he got a chance to talk about
that guy again, Arch Manning. But in your eyes, what
was the biggest takeaway during those conversations, not only from
start but all the other coaches at the SEC winter Meeting.
Speaker 18 (28:18):
I mean, obviously, I think kind of so far, I
think Greg sank he's I don't know, stubborn this is
the right word, but kind of his stands on the state.
Speaker 3 (28:27):
Of college football.
Speaker 18 (28:28):
It's kind of making the most headlines. I think the
thing that stood out to me yesterday about Steve a
I thought it was interesting that he said the you know,
there's ever gonna be an undefeated college football champion again.
I thought that was kind of interesting. Any kind of
things that were college football mister parody, how hard it
is to go undefeated durer a season that kind of
(28:52):
stood out it. I think he's probably wrong it's probably
gonna be more undefeated champions going or and I think
he knows that as well. But in him also, you know,
kind of pushing back on the reports of his forty
million dollars roster was little a little interesting. I don't
know how much truth or isn't that? But I was
interesting to hear him go on the record and say that,
and then also talking about the backup quarterback situation and
(29:13):
why they thought it was necessary to go out and
you get a better and a veteran backup with you know,
the young guys that they have and they're trying to
develop on the roster. Why they thought that that was necessary.
I thought those were interesting points that he made yesterday.
Speaker 2 (29:26):
Danny, is there a number? If if people are speculating
that as forty what in coach Sarkisian saying no, that's
not true. Is there a number?
Speaker 3 (29:40):
Look? I think.
Speaker 18 (29:43):
The reason why Steve was annoyed by the Houston Chronicle report,
and I think this is something we as reporters need
to be careful if going forward is I don't think
anybody knows.
Speaker 3 (29:55):
I think there's a.
Speaker 18 (29:56):
Few people inside that program, one of which is probably Steve,
one of which is you're probably Brandon Paris or GM
and maybe a money person or two that the Texas
One Fund, and even in that case, you know they're
not involved in all of the money. I just don't
think people fully know. I mean, there's people who probably
have an idea of what seventy five percent of the
number is, or you have a good grasp on what
(30:19):
things are, But I'm NOTSSU you're going to be. I
think Ohio State actually released the numbers, which is why
you know we're able to have that figure last year.
But unless like you're the head coach who doesn't really
talk to media in that in that way, and or
unless you're you know, really involved in the money, you
probably don't know. So if there's you know, reporters who
have one or two people who know some people inside
(30:42):
the Texas One Fund, chances out they're probably getting a
little bit of the picture. But I don't think we're
ever going to notice that those numbers are not fliable
and Texas One Fund doesn't have to release it's figures.
I just don't think we're going to know. We have guesses,
and there's some reporters who definitely know some people in
a world source. But I just don't think if Summer
(31:05):
reporter just says this is what it is, I don't
think they have a full grasp of the number because
Steve just doesn't talk to the media that way. And
unless Texas is going to release those numbers, I just
think we're just.
Speaker 3 (31:15):
Going to be getting Let me ask you this, because
why does it matter that that?
Speaker 1 (31:20):
That is my biggest thing is like why do we
even care how much money is being spent on a
player or an organization or at a university. Number one,
It is not your money, you're unless you're part of
the fund. What difference does it make, to be quite
honest with.
Speaker 18 (31:37):
You, Because one thing we would like to do here
is count people's pockets.
Speaker 5 (31:42):
You know.
Speaker 18 (31:43):
That's that's something that you know, even even going to
like trust to whatever, hell, even in your own jobs,
if you're looking across the newsroom or looking across the
radio booth or whatever jobs people are listening to you
right now, you people like to count what other people
are making. And so if people are overpaid or underpaid
or whatever, and that's just something that we like to do,
(32:04):
it doesn't matter. It shouldn't matter. I wish we'd you know,
quit you know, caring how much these these young men
and women are making, because I certainly I don't think
have most of your viewers care what I make and
most of yours care what's your team make. And so
if we're not gonna you take that same energy and
everyone else, you know, I don't think it should be
(32:25):
taking into these athletes. But one thing we love to
do is talk about how people are paid, and they'll
be paid in certain circumstances, it matters, Like I do
think it doesn't matter a little bit what the head
coach of the University of Texas is making and what
the university at university president is making. But it does
not you know, we need to stop caring about what
CDA Baxter's making or what's the new defensive tackles that
(32:46):
they got at the portal and making, Like it just
doesn't matter and people should be less and more interested
in what they're producing on the field and what they're
making off of it.
Speaker 2 (32:52):
It is like when I get on people about talking
about how nice Danny dresses in that wardrobe over his
has mister style in Austin.
Speaker 18 (33:03):
Well, if you think this is stylish, easy to get
out a little bit more top of that, Corey Bose
Eric that's the real stile, no.
Speaker 3 (33:14):
Doubt, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (33:14):
We're talking to Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman.
You can follow them at Underscore Danny Davis and Danny
Let's get to the Austin Regional of Texas Longhorns. We
understood that Texas was going to be a national host.
We didn't know that they were going to be the
number two team, number one team, but it didn't matter.
Coach Slapsnegel said, as long as they were in the
(33:37):
top eight, they were going to be just fine. But
now that this field is said, we got some familiar
faces that will be coming to the forty Acres. Texas
will take on Houston Christian, a team that they've already
played this year, followed by the winner of k State
and UTSA. They've already played UTSA and they've also played
(33:59):
in the past from being a Big twelve member, uh
case day. When you saw the field be announced, what
was your first thought.
Speaker 18 (34:08):
I think it's a favorable draw for Texas, not only
with this but also the Super Regional because at UCLA
Regions as a teacher any SEC team, so I think
that's a favorable path to Omaha, and obviously Texas has
to still get its work out and win some games.
And they've been struggling as a late UTSA even though
it's UTSA is.
Speaker 3 (34:27):
A formidable folk.
Speaker 18 (34:28):
They've had a good season. Obviously, came with Austin and
won that won that midweek game, and they're they're a
pretty good baseball team. That Kansastate team can hit. Can't pitch,
but they can they can definitely hit the ball. So,
I mean, Texas isn't going to walk to this regional.
But Texas should be favored to survive this weekend, and
maybe if they do surround this weekend, they'll be favored
against whoever comes to Austin next week. But obviously, you know,
(34:52):
Houston Christians, they're gonna win that game on Friday, that's
not going to be an issue. But they're going to
have their work out for them on Saturday against either
UTSA or or Kansas standing obviously, they'd have to get
the job done on Sunday against whoever is you know,
playing the game in Texas doesn't make it that far
before we let you go.
Speaker 3 (35:08):
What do you think about that one o'clock start? I mean,
I'm in sides. I don't care Dan, like shit, I
got that ac baby that.
Speaker 18 (35:21):
Like's playing it so you can get some scouting done
in the second game and doesn't have to worry about
prepping for his game. So, I mean, there's such strategic
reasons for it. Sometimes when you get that Northeast team
that's not used to the heat, it's an extra bonus.
But that's not going to matter against He's and Christian
obviously they're used to the heat as well. But I
think strategically, you get your game done, one should take
care of the four, and then you get to, you know,
(35:42):
spend some time with your coaching staff. I'm scotten that
two three matchup.
Speaker 1 (35:45):
No doubt about it. There He is Danny Davis of
the Austin American states Man. You can follow them on
social media at Underscore Danny Davis.
Speaker 3 (35:56):
Danny, I'll check you out on Friday, my brother.
Speaker 18 (36:00):
That sounds good.
Speaker 3 (36:01):
Appreciate you, Danny.
Speaker 1 (36:02):
All right, coming up next, we're going to continue the conversations.
The w NBA is having some issues and we'll talk
about it right here on the morning kickoff on sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Well, so just old
beat up trunk, But here's an opportunity for.
Speaker 3 (36:22):
You to go see Dirk's Bentley. That's right, folks, Dirk's Bentley.
Speaker 1 (36:26):
Will be at the Moody Center tomorrow tomorrow. As a
matter of fact, he will be there, and now's a
chance for you to win a pair of tickets to
go see him. All you have to do is leave
the word beach on the new and improved iHeart Radio app.
Tap tap that red microphone on a thirteen hundred the
(36:47):
zone and.
Speaker 3 (36:48):
Leave the word beach will give.
Speaker 1 (36:50):
You an opportunity to win a pair of tickets to
go see Dirk's Bentley tomorrow at the Moody Center. Make
sure you tune it in all afternoon as well as
Craig Waishow will give you an opportunity to win a
pair of tickets as well. I want to thank Danny
Davis for joining us. Always good chopping it up with
Danny and putting it in a perspective of where things are.
(37:14):
But putting it in perspective of where things are is
just as important in the WNBA. I know we don't
speak a lot on this, but the WNBA is an
exciting brand of basketball for those that are now involved
you start looking at what is going on with the
ticket prices and how things are starting to change.
Speaker 3 (37:35):
But here's the deal.
Speaker 1 (37:37):
There's a lot that has changed because of the simple
fact that now Caitlin Clark is dealing with injuries. She
is going to be out for a couple of weeks
as she's dealing with a strained quad, and so she
will be out at least two weeks and that will
impact not only ticket sales, but it will also impact viewers.
(38:00):
But the WNBA has the possibility of growing the game
to a billion dollars. It has been reported that they
have signed an eleven year deal and they are looking
at eight hundred and seventy.
Speaker 3 (38:13):
Five million dollars.
Speaker 1 (38:15):
All ten of the WNBA's best selling games on stub
Hub are the Indiana Fever. They are up ticket prices
up one hundred and forty percent. They have this eleven
year media righte deal that will be taking place in
twenty twenty six. And I think me personally with the
way and the players that are coming into the game,
(38:37):
because so many people are watching women's basketball, including college
women's basketball, because there's so much talent there. Now they're
shooting from half court they're being able to run the bunt,
gain do some different things. I think that the WNBA
is on the rise even more so, but they have
(38:58):
to be careful and stop putting out so much negative.
Speaker 3 (39:03):
Press, right I mean, and that's going to derail the
whole thing.
Speaker 2 (39:07):
But Harde, I'm gonna tell you right now, if I'm
Kaitlyn Clark, I'm like, hey, guys, where's mine?
Speaker 3 (39:12):
Where's my cut? Because she's a catalyst.
Speaker 2 (39:15):
She was like Jordan was in the middle Ladies to
ninety two, like we talked about I'm going to talk
about it in my world's strongest take about the ratings
for the NBA and the highest that it ever was
ninety eight.
Speaker 3 (39:36):
They had a thirty rating.
Speaker 2 (39:37):
Hard thirty million people were watching basketball, twenty eight percent
up from the largest number that had ever been thought about, right,
twenty eight percent higher than the best NBA ever did.
Come on, man, Like, that is what Caitlyn Clark is.
(40:01):
She is having the Michael Jordan effect in women's basketball.
Speaker 1 (40:04):
And I really you know, as someone who watch all
sports and that's part of our job description, but you
start to look at how.
Speaker 3 (40:13):
The game is being played and where the game is
being played.
Speaker 1 (40:17):
And the different arenas, and you can watch on TV
and you're seeing it. I believe, thankfully, Caitlin Clark is
doing an amazing job in bringing eyes to it. I
am still firmly believing that once people start truly paying
attention to Page but Becker's, they're gonna understand that not
(40:37):
only is it Caitlin, it's Page. You start looking at
Angel Reese. People love to hate Angel Reaes, but the
face of the WNBA is Asia Wilson.
Speaker 3 (40:49):
She is the MVP, she's the reigning MVP.
Speaker 1 (40:52):
She is got her signature shoe that a lot of
people out you and people forget to Sabrina and Aski
is one of the best players in the NBA. She
was one of the best players in college as well.
So if you pay attention to the sport, you'll start
to see that all of these all of these futures
(41:14):
are going to be more than just Caitlyn Clark.
Speaker 3 (41:17):
I know, Kaitlyn Clark is.
Speaker 1 (41:18):
Fun, she's Iowa, she's the Heartland and she's the all
time leading scorer and all that other stuff. That's great,
But go watch some of these other teams and what
they've been able to achieve, and you look at a
Breonna Stewart.
Speaker 3 (41:34):
She's one of the best players to ever play the game.
Speaker 1 (41:37):
Dina Tarassi, she's walked away from it now, but she
was a hoober. You didn't want to play against her
because she would cut your throat out. That's who she was.
Speaker 3 (41:45):
Sue Byrd, I mean these were gate ones. Kelsey Plumb is.
Speaker 1 (41:50):
Just as beautiful as the next girl that is playing basketball.
So if you're looking for those types of players to
elevate your your viewership, going.
Speaker 2 (42:01):
On a pick from everybody like just but I'm just
saying hard just to put it in perspective.
Speaker 3 (42:07):
I think Caitlyn is amazing, by the way, So don't
don't come after No, I'm not coming after you.
Speaker 2 (42:11):
I'm talking about the people's Yeah. Uh, Kaitlyn has been
in the league. This is her second year. She's already
the third time all time in triple doubles. She'll be
she'll be number two at the end of the season,
and beginning the next year she'll be number one. She's
(42:33):
only behind by six. Yeah, I mean, she theoretically could
do six get six triple.
Speaker 3 (42:39):
Doubles this year. But you got to remember too, and
this is where we get in trouble a lot.
Speaker 11 (42:44):
The game.
Speaker 3 (42:46):
Was not what it was a few years ago. The
game has changed a lot.
Speaker 2 (42:51):
Steph carry the women's game is becoming.
Speaker 1 (42:53):
The Steph Carry shop, so she can do more because
that's the way the game was more moving towards.
Speaker 3 (43:01):
And it's great.
Speaker 1 (43:02):
It's just like in the NBA you can get all
these scoring titles because it's not the same type of
basketball that was played in the seventies, eighties, nineties or
even in.
Speaker 3 (43:11):
The early two thousand. So there's so much more that
is there as well to kind of break down when
we come back.
Speaker 1 (43:20):
We'll continue the conversations in hour number two Pro Football Focus.
Speaker 3 (43:25):
Yep, they're back again, folks.
Speaker 1 (43:27):
They have the top five Heisman candidates and you can
believe that one of them Alreadys on the forty acres.
We'll talk about it right here on the morning Kickoff
on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back
to our number two of the morning kickoff right here
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. We talked
(43:50):
about the Pacers continuing to roll over the Knicks one
thirty one twenty nine triple double by Halla Burton as
his daddy was in the house and no turnovers.
Speaker 3 (44:03):
We also got a chance to hear from coach Sark at.
Speaker 1 (44:06):
The SEC meetings, Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman,
and we just talked w NBA.
Speaker 3 (44:14):
Coming up in the next segment, we.
Speaker 1 (44:16):
Will hear more from coach Sark at eight seventeen. We'll
also hear from chris Dale County and Kirby Smart. We
have the world's strongest take by the world's strongest men
in college basketball.
Speaker 3 (44:30):
Wait till you hear this crazy, crazy number.
Speaker 1 (44:35):
But right now we're going to get into the conversation
of Pro Football Focus and the fact that they believe
that this year's Heisman Trophy winner will be coming from
the SEC, not only the SEC, but possibly the forty acres.
I went over to DraftKings, by the way, special shout
(44:56):
out to DraftKings for being an ultimate sponsor of the
morning Kickoff and myself. They have done an unbelievable job.
And if you've got a gambling problem, called one eight
hundred gambler, but DraftKings always doing something special for you.
DraftKings Pick six. The crown is yours. But I wanted
(45:17):
over there to look at the odds for this year's
Heisman Trophy candidacy, there's.
Speaker 3 (45:24):
Odds and summer football haven't even started yet.
Speaker 1 (45:28):
Absolutely, there's going to be odds regardless because people have
to find ways to make wagers.
Speaker 3 (45:35):
So we went and I looked at all these numbers.
Speaker 1 (45:38):
For Texas A and M fans, your starting quarterback Marcel Reid,
he is plus four thousand, plus four thousand to be
the Heisman Trophy winner. If you are an Oklahoma fan,
your quarterback John Mayner is plus thirty five one hundred
(46:03):
and if you are an LSU fan, Grant Newsmyer plus
nine hundred. And for the Locals Cade club, Nick of
Clemson plus fourteen one hundred dollars. But the leader in
the clubhouse going into this season once again is arch Manning.
(46:26):
Arch Manning is at plus seven hundred, followed by Newsmyer
as the second highest odds to win the Heisman Trophy.
Drew Aller from Penn State is the third at plus
one thousand. Jeremiah Smith, you were talking about this during
the break, Marcus. You were asking what was the last
(46:47):
wide receiver that had an opportunity to win the Heisman Trophy,
and that was Davonte Smith. But Jeremiah Smith comes in
at plus twelve hundred. Carson Beck, who's at Miami of Florida,
is now plus twenty two hundred.
Speaker 2 (47:04):
I need you to put that out your mind. What
Carson Beck is. He's not gonna win anything. Rose like
a shot putter.
Speaker 1 (47:14):
DJ Lagway quarterback for four, can get behind that. Pretty
talented he is at plus twenty five hundred, and Leonoras
Sellers is plus two thousand. And I bring this up
because looking at Pro Football focus in their thoughts at
this particular time, they too have Arch Manning as the
(47:36):
top quarterback, five star recruit, nephew of Peyton and Eli.
He was the number one recruit in the twenty twenty
three class, six foot three two and twenty pound, and
he is one of those guys that just makes it
jump off of the film. But as I've said before,
and I'll continue to say, Pumpy Brakes a little bit.
(47:57):
Let him get out there and get adjusted to the game. Yes,
he's three years in two Sark's offense, things are gonna
be a lot different. And as we talked about with
Joe Cook yesterday, Joe Cook and I both agreed that
they're gonna have to scale down because all of the
plays before were big chunk plays for Arch, and now
(48:19):
they're saying, hold up, he's gonna have to go into
the flow of the offense for coach sark Harja.
Speaker 2 (48:25):
You may have to call your cousin and ask him
about this. But what if I bet fifty bucks on
all seven of the guys, then you.
Speaker 1 (48:34):
Might win one of them. I mean, you're gonna make
some money. But my thing is how much money do.
Speaker 2 (48:40):
You have to bet in order for it to cover
how much you spend? If you bet seven fifty dollars
on all of.
Speaker 1 (48:46):
Them, well it just all depends on which one actually
wins it. But you'll definitely get your money back. You'll
definitely get your money back, no matter what I mean.
You pick Arch, you put fifty on the Arch, you
gonna get your money back. You're gonna put it on Neusemier,
you get your money back. You will always get your
money back if you put money on all of these guys.
But how much money are you trying to win? That's
the question.
Speaker 2 (49:06):
Okay, So it's not about the win, it's about how
much you win exactly.
Speaker 1 (49:10):
I mean, you can you could put a dollar on
every single one of them and win something.
Speaker 3 (49:15):
I mean, I'm just asking questions because I don't know
how this works.
Speaker 1 (49:21):
Yeah, so there are some there's some numbers that are
out there that you can play play with to see
if you're gonna be able to win some money. But
you start looking at the preseason, as we've talked about,
and how all of these guys are being looked at
as potential Heisman Trophy winners. But not only that, you
(49:44):
start looking at a quarterback like Drew Aller. Drew Allard
from Penn Steak, six foot five, two and forty pounds quarterback.
A lot of folks have already looked at him and
saying he may be it because of the prototype of
what you see in a quarterback. Neu Smyer six foot two,
two oh five. Nico I'm gonna leave you he is
(50:09):
six foot five and two fifteen at the quarterback position. Obviously,
Carson Beck and Kay club Nick, these are the guys
that they have lined up as the potential Heisman Trophy
winning quarterback.
Speaker 2 (50:24):
Well, we've seen ky Comny play up close and personal.
When he came to Austin during the playoffs, he looked
really good.
Speaker 1 (50:34):
Yeah, he's gotten he's gotten leaked athletic. Then people give
him credit for big Dude too. He gave texts he
ran the ball on Texas like, not like he was
Cam Newton, but he ran it pretty you know, efficiently. Yeah,
I'm a big fan of what Kate has been able
to do. The adjustment period. Again, he was another guy
(50:56):
that was highly touted coming out of high school. He
struggled when he got in initially, and now he's finally
found his groove after a few years playing. And that
was in the ACCR. So everybody always talks about the
SEC and where you want to be and how you
want to play. This is that opportunity that I keep
(51:17):
talking about of being patient and.
Speaker 3 (51:20):
Letting your body develop as well as your mind. Yeah
for the game.
Speaker 1 (51:25):
Yeah, So we'll see how We'll see how how this
all plays out. But as we talked about, before you
start to look at these these names and these players,
what is your takeaway from from these names already that
are being put out there as possible Heisman Trophy candidates.
Speaker 2 (51:46):
I say, Kate Club Nigga is my favorite, and I
would go with Penn State because of.
Speaker 3 (51:56):
That quarterback looked.
Speaker 2 (51:57):
Really good in the playoffs and he was young, and
I just know that he's gonna be better as a sophomore.
You know, he can't not improve and understand that offense
better and have more responsibilities.
Speaker 3 (52:13):
You know, they played around him.
Speaker 2 (52:16):
You know the way that he threw the ball, it
was like, Okay, I gotta throw the check down. They
want me to throw the check down. It looked like
very controlled. When he can get out of that being
control phase, which I think arch Man is going to
be in that control phase this year because he's gonna
look to the sideline a lot. He's a lot of
(52:37):
times he's gonna be looking at the sideline. They're gonna
tell him where to go with the ball. And yes,
he could throw the deep ball. His arm is awesome.
But this game is gonna revolve around the running game
more than anything. Hard you got your start running back,
coming back, you want to be able to run plays
(52:59):
where he can pull the ball and nobody are nobody's
around him.
Speaker 3 (53:04):
That's what you want.
Speaker 2 (53:05):
You want the safeties, you know, to get back, but
for the most part, that's not gonna happen until Sark
sees him creeping and go okay, this is a signal,
and you know you're going deep, he's gonna be looking
at the sideline. You believe that I do. It's gonna
be a control game, and I'm he's gonna do well.
(53:27):
I'm not gonna put that on on that situation. The
only reason why is because of what I said earlier.
He's three years into the program. He knows the offense,
I would think pretty dog go well. Not only that,
I believe that.
Speaker 1 (53:41):
Coach Sark also knows his quarterback, and he knows where
he's gonna be good, and he knows where he's gonna
be bad. And I'm sure that they have had all
kinds of conversations about this as they break it down.
Let's not forget he says, he's these are arches words.
He and Peyton spend time together watching film. He and
(54:05):
Eli spend time together watching film. So I believe that
he's gonna be well versed in everything that is going on.
And I don't think they're gonna have restraints on what
he's gonna be able to do because I believe that
he's gonna be just fine. I just know that they
can't do all of Every play can't be a deep shot.
Speaker 3 (54:29):
No, it can't.
Speaker 1 (54:29):
Every play can't be a deep shot and they know that.
They looked at it before and they were like, man,
we looked at the play call and Sark said this,
and next thing you know, you're looking at it. You're like, man,
there's a deep shot here. There's a deep shot there.
There's a deep shot. And he's gonna take them. There's
no doubt about it. He's gonna take them. But it's
more about getting into the flow of Sark's offense with
(54:52):
the timing, because Sark is all about timing, and so
speaking of timing, coming up next, we got more from
Coach Sark because he talks about the roster, the portal,
and we'll get a chance to hear from Chris del
Conte as well as The Morning Kickoff on a way
Back Wednesday continues to roll on right here on Sports
(55:15):
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back to the
morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
The Zone. Coming up, in the next segment, we'll have
the world's Strongest Man giving you his world's strongest take.
But coming up right now, we want you to hear
a little more from Coach Shark in his time in Destin,
Florida at the SEC winter meetings and one of the
(55:39):
biggest conversations, and we talked about it a little bit
with Danny Davis a little while ago, was the cost
of the roster and the fact that people are so
concerned about what's going on with these college athletes that
it isn't even talking about the play on the field.
But here's coach Sark and he kind of took offense
(56:01):
to some reporting that was out there about how much
money has been spent on his construction of the Texas roster.
Speaker 11 (56:10):
What's frustrating on that was it was a little bit
of irresponsible reporting, right it was one anonymous source said
that that's what our roster was. I wish I had
forty million on our roster. We'd probably be a little
bit better team than we are. But you know, the
idea to think that a lot of other schools aren't
aren't spending money to get players. I mean, it's the
state of college football right now.
Speaker 16 (56:30):
It is what it is.
Speaker 11 (56:31):
And hey, we're fortunate, don't get me wrong. We've got
great support. Christo Kanye athletic director, does a fantastic job
on our donors, and hey, people are excited and we've
been to the CFP two years in a row and
we've had, shoot, I don't know, twenty something guys drafted
last two years. So it's been great. It's been a
great run. I wish I had about another fifteen million
or so though it might have a little better roster,
(56:52):
but so two or three full backs for fifteen what's
crazy about this day and age that you guys operate in?
And I've walked this for twenty five years now, this
this whole like the evolution of Twitter and social media
and podcast One guy writes an article from an anonymous
source that says, that's what our that's what our roster is.
(57:14):
Everybody ram with it, and I'm talking real publications ram
with it. And it was like, that's what's going on
at Texas, And nobody asked me one question, like okay, sure,
but if that's what you think that, that's fine. If
that's the narrative you want to paint for our team,
that's fine. Whatever, whatever, I love it.
Speaker 3 (57:36):
I'm here for it all day. Hearts to see him
go and make a fool out of the.
Speaker 2 (57:42):
Media world that believes what one anonymous source said is
lazy at best. It's just lazy reporting at best. Well,
let's say this. He didn't deny the fact that there
is a lot of money.
Speaker 1 (58:02):
Did you notice where he said, I wish I did
have about fifteen million more, we'd have a roster oo.
Speaker 3 (58:09):
So so you're saying it's just a fifteen difference.
Speaker 1 (58:14):
It just seems to be that there is some money
that is out there that is being spent, and he
too is saying, oh, if I'd have had fifteen million more, Well,
I mean that would put you right around a pretty
decent number of what is being spent.
Speaker 2 (58:29):
So if everybody can spend twenty million, if everybody can
spend twenty yeah, across the board, absolutely, another fifteen million dollars,
isn't it's feasible.
Speaker 1 (58:42):
And here's the deal. All that money's not coming from
the University of Texas. A lot of these guys are
making money on nil deals, truly.
Speaker 3 (58:50):
Off of it.
Speaker 1 (58:51):
You look at what we just talked about about, how
how Arch is doing his thing because he's getting paid
by other people.
Speaker 3 (59:00):
Right, So, I mean it.
Speaker 1 (59:03):
Is interesting though the conversation is always around the dollar
dollar bills instead of the performance that start was just
talking about. He talked about the fact that we were
in the college football playoffs. And I say we because
I'm speaking as him. He said, we were in the
college football playoffs back to back years.
Speaker 3 (59:24):
The only team, the only team that.
Speaker 1 (59:29):
In this expanded form was even able to make it
back into the college football playoffs and made it to
the final four.
Speaker 3 (59:38):
So he's done some amazing things.
Speaker 1 (59:40):
And one of the other parts of it is what
Sark has to say about the transfer portal.
Speaker 8 (59:46):
I don't know the exact timing of when that should be.
Speaker 11 (59:51):
I do think we're all in agreement that one transfer
portal would be beneficial.
Speaker 8 (59:56):
Again, we're trying to we're team builders.
Speaker 11 (59:58):
That's what we do, right, and it's hard to build
a team when you've got two different portals and you're
not sure who's on your team, who's coming, who's going,
And you do your best to build a culture to
where hopefully you can retain those players and bring in
some good players.
Speaker 8 (01:00:13):
And again we've all benefited from that.
Speaker 11 (01:00:15):
But I think if we can uniform that a little
bit at some point in spring, I think would be helpful.
Speaker 8 (01:00:20):
What that exact time is, I don't know yet.
Speaker 11 (01:00:23):
I do know from my perspective for two years now,
I have been in the playoffs the back to back years, that.
Speaker 8 (01:00:29):
December portal window was brutal, where.
Speaker 11 (01:00:33):
We had I think nine guys go in and then
ten guys go in the next year while we were
still playing in the college football playoffs, and that was
very difficult. So I'm definitely an advocate for that portal
being after the playoffs are done.
Speaker 8 (01:00:48):
But when in spring? When does that occur?
Speaker 3 (01:00:50):
I don't know yet.
Speaker 11 (01:00:53):
I don't know because you want to start building that
team too right, and may seems kind of late.
Speaker 8 (01:01:00):
Like I said, I think somewhere in spring is probably
the right timing. What does that look like? You know,
is that late January? Is that February? Is that March?
I don't know, you know, what does that exactly look like?
Speaker 11 (01:01:12):
And I haven't heard everybody's thoughts on that, And that's
what these meetings are forced to figure that out, that
that might spur some thoughts for me and maybe others
have some feelings that I have.
Speaker 18 (01:01:21):
On the issue.
Speaker 1 (01:01:22):
Well, not only does he have some issues and some
thoughts on it, so does Kirby Smart because he brought
up some very interesting parts of that conversation as well.
Speaker 17 (01:01:36):
You know, I didn't even talk to because I was
getting ready to talk to him.
Speaker 3 (01:01:38):
I didn't talk to Partly.
Speaker 19 (01:01:40):
I think of this meeting and I think everybody in
this room is eight or not SEC championship or not settlement.
Speaker 17 (01:01:47):
The biggest decision that has.
Speaker 19 (01:01:49):
To be made in college football right now, by far,
to me, by far, is when is the porter window?
Speaker 17 (01:01:54):
And is there one or two? Okay, that's not the
being decided by us today.
Speaker 19 (01:01:59):
A lot of people don't know how it's getting decided,
who's deciding it. But I need you to think for
a second, there is a strong contingent. We had an
AFCA meeting. We had a meeting in which we unanimously
decided that there really needed to be one portal window.
Whatever that is, is what it is, and it needs
to happen sometime in January. There is an outcry, there
(01:02:21):
is schools, there's different conferences that feel like it should
not fall during the play and season.
Speaker 17 (01:02:28):
I would love that. I would love to be able
to play the season without it. Is basketball able to
do that? Or do they deal with the portal during
their championship during the tournament?
Speaker 19 (01:02:39):
What do we deal with during the final Let's call
it maybe four teams almost I'm exactly right on that.
Speaker 17 (01:02:45):
But roughly we're down to four.
Speaker 3 (01:02:47):
We deal with that.
Speaker 19 (01:02:48):
Okay, that's because of the academic calendar for us, for
the academic calendar falls.
Speaker 17 (01:02:52):
And everybody doesn't have that incongruency. Oh, by the way,
we had to deal with that.
Speaker 3 (01:03:00):
Times.
Speaker 17 (01:03:00):
It's not fun.
Speaker 3 (01:03:01):
It's not fun.
Speaker 17 (01:03:02):
It's really hard to be playing in a championship setting
and having to deal with that.
Speaker 19 (01:03:07):
But when I brought that up as a complaint or
a problem, it was told to me there's no crying
from the yacht.
Speaker 17 (01:03:14):
So if you're going to play in these environments, you
have to be willing to do that.
Speaker 3 (01:03:19):
It's amazing, it's amazing.
Speaker 1 (01:03:21):
It is a very, very, very tough situation when you
start to think about how do you find a window
for the transfer portal, because one thing that he talked
about was the school calendar. You have to be a
part of the school calendar because if you're going to transfer,
(01:03:43):
it's got to be at the semester part of it.
Speaker 3 (01:03:46):
So when does that end.
Speaker 1 (01:03:47):
If everybody's not on the same accord, it's going to
be different for different schools. So it is a tough,
tough thought process of trying to figure out this transfer.
Speaker 3 (01:04:00):
A portal window, So can you get in it.
Speaker 2 (01:04:03):
Did they work it out that January would be best
because of the school year in the academics.
Speaker 1 (01:04:10):
They haven't worked it out completely yet at all.
Speaker 3 (01:04:13):
I mean, that's why they're having this. They start right there.
Speaker 1 (01:04:16):
Well, they've got to figure out because UCLA doesn't have
the same transfer portal time they start, they're in quarters.
Not everybody does the same school schedule. Okay, so you
can put a date out there, but is it gonna
be true? Then you also have basketball, you have baseball,
you got tracked, you got swimming, you got all these
(01:04:39):
other sports that are taking place that they're all being
affected by the transfer portal window.
Speaker 3 (01:04:47):
And it's like he talked about it.
Speaker 1 (01:04:49):
I'm sure we're gonna hear from Sean Miller tomorrow and
get his thoughts.
Speaker 3 (01:04:53):
But you start thinking about basketball.
Speaker 1 (01:04:56):
There were guys that were getting into portal in the
middle of the NCAA tournament, I know, just like Sarp
said about football season, there was guys that are trying
to figure out And if you're a coach and you
just happen to be one of the fortunate ones to
be playing in the final four, you're dealing with managing
your roster getting ready for a game, yet trying to
(01:05:19):
figure out who's gonna be in the portal at another school.
So the dynamics of this transfer portal, although people love
it and the whole nil world, it creates a bunch
of unwanted chaos and hey, figure it out, right, there's
a lot out there coming up next, we're gonna figure
(01:05:41):
out what this world's Strongest Take is going to be
as it is brought to you by the world's strongest
man right here on the morning kickoff on Sports Radio
and thirteen hundred the Zone.
Speaker 3 (01:05:52):
You heard the b drop, So you know what that means.
WWE Hall of Famer.
Speaker 1 (01:05:57):
And the world's strongest Man, the Mark Henry brings you
his world's strongest take.
Speaker 3 (01:06:04):
Take it away, big fella, Harsh, what's up man? You
know what time in it It's.
Speaker 2 (01:06:09):
Time for the world's strongest take by the world's strongest man.
Speaker 3 (01:06:14):
I guess back then they didn't know me. Now I'm hot.
Speaker 2 (01:06:18):
They all on men, guys, I'm gonna bring to you
today something that I feel like it is necessary being
in the time that we're in with the NBA.
Speaker 5 (01:06:32):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:06:33):
This season was not the best when it came to
the ratings. This was the lowest ratings in the last
four years. Four years we dipped down into the games
on the NB, on on ABC, ESPN, and TNT. The
(01:06:58):
average games were or one point five million viewers per game.
And I mean it's a small drop, you know, three
hundred thousand from last year, but it's significantly been going
lower for the last five years, and you know, it's
(01:07:18):
all going to add up. The decline from the previous
season was you know, it was one point five point
six million. ABC said that they were that they were
down ten percent, TNT they were down seven percent. But
(01:07:40):
something happened, and that's something that's called the playoffs. Playoffs
came around and the game went up twelve percent in
the first round. Now it's up to fourteen percent in
here we are now. So you went from the regular
(01:08:03):
season being one point five million viewers to now four
point eight million viewers on ABC and NBC. I really
feel like hards that, Yes, the playoffs have been really
(01:08:27):
good too. That's a part of it. I think that
everybody got matchups that they liked and everything. The balance
of the basketball force finally came to fruition. But my
opinion and my take is that the season is too
long and that people are not as interested in eighty
(01:08:51):
two games of basketball.
Speaker 1 (01:08:54):
They want to get to the best six teams and
let's do it. Let's say you, I think that is terrible.
I think that's a terrible idea of cutting all these games.
If you're going to do that, you need to cut
everybody's salary. If you're going to do that, you need
to cut all the things that go into it. And
(01:09:15):
this is why it's interesting that everybody is always talking
about these stats and these numbers. But the thing that
people keep forgetting is that people are watching it on
their phones, people are streaming, people are doing all these
different things. So they're still consuming these sports, whether they're
(01:09:37):
sitting at a sports bar, picking it up on.
Speaker 3 (01:09:39):
The TV, doing all these things.
Speaker 1 (01:09:42):
But the other part of it is people forget that
people have other lives. Our entire life is around moving
and shaking. You were just out of town because you
had an event that you went to. We have sporting
of that we go to, whether it's live, whether we're
(01:10:03):
on the road trying to get there, whether we're doing
all these different things, but we still try to consume
the game because we can look at it on our phones.
You know the viewerships for those industries and those numbers.
That can be true if you're hardwired and you're looking
at cable.
Speaker 2 (01:10:25):
But if you're on the road, then that doesn't it
don't cant.
Speaker 3 (01:10:27):
It don't count.
Speaker 1 (01:10:28):
You're on the road at hotel, you're watching it in
your hotel room, you're watching it at the hotel bar,
you're you're driving and the kids are streaming it in
the back seat. There's so many other ways to get
your sports. It's not appointment TV, because your appointment is
your kid got a basketball practice, he's got a soccer practice,
(01:10:50):
he's got a wrestling practice. He's got she's got ballerina,
she's got gymnastics, she's got wrestling. There's so much going
on with our kids today that we're not sitting at
home like we used to to be around the television.
Speaker 12 (01:11:06):
Plus, you're probably watching the game on your phone or
on your tablet while you're at your kids exactly when
they're practicing, you're watching it on the iPad.
Speaker 1 (01:11:19):
Yeah, you're doing different things, and people are working. You're
working all the time. You're at work doing this, so
you're gonna stream it. You're gonna have it on in
the background, but you're not actually watching it on cable anymore.
Speaker 2 (01:11:35):
I think a lot of the reason that the ratings
have gone down is because, and this is from talking
to friends that are basketball heads, they don't like the
fact that people could take off before they dribble the ball.
There's so much carrying that you would think that people
are packing their luggage through the airport.
Speaker 12 (01:11:57):
I heard that complaint for years, though I heard that
in a ninety people are traveling. They travel too much
in the NBA. That's why people love college basketball in
the nineties, because they travel too much.
Speaker 2 (01:12:07):
And the other thing is the situation that we talked
about last week with the with the files is being
in the flopping and being able to put your body
in waiting for somebody else to jump in the air
and then you lean into them. Or the other file
that I was talking about is I wait for you
(01:12:29):
to put your hands out and then I run my
hands into your hands. You don't like either one. I
don't like either one. I think they should penalize people
for both. But the whole point is there are guys
that are not playing. That's the thing that pisses me off.
Arge it's all of the load management. Like, that's the
(01:12:50):
biggest thing. And that's why when you talk about cutting
games out, they ain't. Let's just say, if you.
Speaker 3 (01:12:55):
Don't play in the game, you don't get paid that day.
Let's see what that looks like.
Speaker 1 (01:13:00):
Wow, that would make Let's see all That's what I'm saying, Like,
if we don't come here, we don't get paid.
Speaker 3 (01:13:08):
So you're making astronomical amounts of money.
Speaker 1 (01:13:12):
You are a WWE wrestler where your body is getting
slammed the entire time, and you were doing three hundred.
Better be there and you're doing three hundred, right, there's
no load management in that.
Speaker 3 (01:13:26):
No, it was, yeah, you want to load management, you'll
be looking for.
Speaker 2 (01:13:29):
A new job and it don't. And then those companies
don't pay like the big one exactly. And here's the
biggest thing for me in this moment.
Speaker 1 (01:13:38):
If you are making this ridiculous amount of money, and
I'm not jealous of it, like we talk about pocket watching,
you should want to show up every single day for
somebody that does not and is less fortunate as you
to have expendable money. Because there's a family of five
that just spent five thousand dollars that they have saved
(01:13:59):
up because your kid loves to go see X.
Speaker 3 (01:14:03):
Player in and he's not there. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:14:06):
Man, you ain't getting that money back. There ain't refunding
you that. So yeah, I'm I don't care.
Speaker 3 (01:14:13):
What nobody say. And plus what we gonna talk about
if they are no more games? Yeah that's good. Yeah,
we're gonna close out the show and send you to
Dan Patrick. But coming up.
Speaker 1 (01:14:22):
Next, college basketball has a portal problem. I'll explain when
we come back right here on the Morning Kickoff on
Sports Radio Am thirteen hundred the ZM. What ain great,
great show we've had, and if you missed any.
Speaker 3 (01:14:38):
Part of it. Number one, where you've been. Number two,
make sure you get.
Speaker 1 (01:14:42):
Over to our podcast page wherever you get your podcast,
and make sure you type in the Morning Kickoff as always,
and preset preset.
Speaker 3 (01:14:53):
On that new and improved iHeartRadio app. There's nothing else
like it, So make sure were you reach out.
Speaker 1 (01:15:02):
I want to continue to show and have this conversation
because I brought it up just a little while ago.
It was all about the fact that the transfer portal
has been part of the conversation for quite some time now,
and I saw a report yesterday that said that in
the transfer portal in college basketball, college basketball alone, and
(01:15:27):
I'm sure coach Miller would agree, that the transfer portal
in college basketball in twenty twenty five, and that's Division
one and D two has a total of forty two
one hundred, forty two hundred players are in the college
(01:15:47):
basketball and everybody right ain't transfer portal. It is utterly ridiculous.
In twenty nineteen there was fifteen hundred and sixteen D
one and D two transfers, twenty twenty sixteen, twenty three,
twenty twenty one, twenty four to fifty four, twenty twenty two,
(01:16:07):
twenty five, sixty three, twenty twenty three, twenty seven, twenty five,
and last year there was three thousand, fifty five transfers.
You have to be able to get this under control
because it is hurting the high school basketball game.
Speaker 3 (01:16:29):
All these kids that are playing high.
Speaker 1 (01:16:30):
School basketball in other sports, they are being affected by that.
Speaker 3 (01:16:35):
If they're not the top tier, five star, top.
Speaker 1 (01:16:39):
Of the line, they're not gonna end up on a
Team's gonna be difficult. It's gonna be difficult, or they're
gonna get an opportunity to go to one of those
smaller schools get their playing time and become one of
those transfers as well. It's just a lot to digest
when you start to think about all the things that
are going on in college athletics. And speaking of all
(01:17:01):
the things that are going on in college athletics, I
want you to hear from Chrisdale County.
Speaker 3 (01:17:07):
And I know a lot of.
Speaker 1 (01:17:08):
People are really really high on Chrystal County and this
might be one of the reasons why.
Speaker 3 (01:17:15):
So here's him with Paul Feinbaum in today's.
Speaker 20 (01:17:18):
Landscape of Nil, the house case, all those things. We
could in my chair could have a thoughtful conversation, but
they're on the firing lines of what's actually taking place,
and I think today to hear from them and what
is taking place in the industry. They may talk to me,
but now they're with each other and they're really sharing
what is going on and why we need guardrails. And
(01:17:39):
Steve Sarkisian is an incredible mind. But you got Kirby Smart,
you got the SEC has incredible coaches on and off
the field, and that meeting today, hopefully, I can't wait
to hear what they digest tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (01:17:52):
But something that every time comes out of it.
Speaker 20 (01:17:54):
Just kind of surprises me that we haven't thought of
because we're not a practitioner in that particular space. You're
running an entire enterprise, and what they're dealing with right
now is localized to them.
Speaker 21 (01:18:04):
So I mean, on any given day, being the position
that you have at such a massive organization, which is
the University of Texas Athletic Department, would be enough to
fill your day up every day all year. But now
there are so many other things on the plate. So
(01:18:24):
my question is pretty simple. How do you and your
colleagues but none of them have the same largess as
you do, how do you manage it?
Speaker 16 (01:18:34):
Well?
Speaker 20 (01:18:34):
I think kudos to the alignment. We have an incredible
chairman of the board, Our governor's a longhorn, our regions
are longhorn. When you have that alignment. We got a
new president, Jim Davis coming in as a longhorn. When
you have that alignment from leadership, that allows you to
do your job. And I think when you've been around
a long time, mister Finebaum, you see when campuses aren't aligned,
So the alignment is critical.
Speaker 3 (01:18:55):
Then secondly, you have a staff.
Speaker 20 (01:18:57):
I think we have the very best staff in the country,
saying because I'm in Texas, just where they came from,
their breath of what they did and responsibilities. That allows
you then to let them be the expert on the
subject matter. In house, we have people that understand the
landscape going around the nation and they're the experts on
the outside. So collectively we have a complete team effort
(01:19:18):
that sits around and discusses what's going to take place.
When you don't have that breath and depth of staff,
it can be overwhelming, unbelievable.
Speaker 1 (01:19:27):
You got to make sure you got everything lined up.
And that is what that is what he has talked about,
that's what he's going to continue to push and the
alliance of everybody that is in the front office and
at the University of Texas and all universities.
Speaker 3 (01:19:42):
Right when you've got to be agreeance.
Speaker 2 (01:19:44):
When you're as comfortable as saying what he just said
means that it's true exactly.
Speaker 3 (01:19:50):
There was no waiver hesitation. Listen, man, we're in alignment.
You know.
Speaker 2 (01:19:56):
We have everybody is our longhorns. Albody knows and we
allow people to do their jobs, not standing over micromanaging people.
We hire great coaches and their work proves what they
are yep, and they continue to try to make sure
(01:20:16):
that everything is in one accord because they got to
roll in the same direction, because when you start ruining
in a different direction, that's when the ship starts getting
popped all over the place, and you got to make
sure that everything is locked in. Tomorrow is a busy,
busy day here on the morning kickoff, we have coach Slasnagel.
(01:20:41):
We have Eric Henry of Horners twenty four to seven
at seven thirty four, we have coach Slasnagel at eight am,
and we've got Southwest Conference Hall of Famer. That's right,
he's finally inducted into the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame.
And our Legends of the locker room segment, we will
(01:21:02):
have Kirk Dressendor for one of the best pitchers. His
name is up on the wall on the forty acres
over there at dishfalk Field. One of the best players
in the history of Texas baseball. He'll be talking about
the preview for the tournament here in town.
Speaker 1 (01:21:21):
Also will be previewing Texas Softball as they get ready
to take on Tennessee, i mean Florida Tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (01:21:29):
At eleven a m.
Speaker 1 (01:21:31):
You can hear the game right here on Sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Make sure you tune in
this afternoon to the Craig Way Show as he breaks
it down.
Speaker 3 (01:21:42):
Breaks down this weekend's tournament.
Speaker 1 (01:21:44):
I'm sure he's gonna have one of the play by
play guys on as well to talk all things Texas Longhorns,
and he'll probably have some conversation about the SEC.
Speaker 2 (01:21:58):
Spring Meetings meetings now inter Meeting Spring meetings. And we
also will probably have a conclusion to our donut bet.
Speaker 1 (01:22:08):
Yeah, that takes place tonight. There's the Thunder and the Timberwolves.
They will be taking place. And yes, I said it
yesterday then not Marcus. Then I acknowledge that Mark was
actually right about what the dunder's.
Speaker 22 (01:22:22):
Defense was able to do to Anthony Davis. I mean,
not Anthony Davis, Anthony Edwards. So yeah, Mark, you can
get your donuts. Man, Hey, I'm trivialize my daughter. Well,
I'm just saying get your donuts.
Speaker 3 (01:22:34):
I want my baron call man.
Speaker 1 (01:22:35):
