Speaker 1 (00:08):
It's Thursday here on the morning kickoff, and you know
what that means. It's the one and only Eric Henry
of Horns twenty four to seven. You can follow You
can follow them on social media.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
At Eric c Henry Underscore. It is time.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
We are closer and closer. Two days away from kickoff
at dk R Texas Memorial Stadium as the Texas Longhorns
will take on the Colorado State Rams two thirty hot,
but the weather's looking a little bit better for us,
it won't be as hot. How excited are you to
get this thing kicked off?
Speaker 3 (00:43):
Oh man, good morning, Good morning fellas. I'm pumped. I mean,
it feels like it's been a long eight and a
half months since we left the Louisiana super Dome. They're
walking off the tariff after Texas lost, the Washingtons have
definitely fired up to get twenty twenty four kicked off,
and it should be a little interesting matchup. You know,
I had the Colorado State team presents a couple facet
that will test Texas as there as they struggle last
(01:05):
year in the secondary is it's definitely fired up to
get to the state of Saturday.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
So let's talk about that you brought it up.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
You talked about the secondary and that is going to
be a key component to this team, and it's the
part of it that has the most Uh, I'm gonna
say scrutiny at this particular time because we don't know
what adjustments that have been made. But if there are
going to be some adjustments made, where do you see
it happening?
Speaker 2 (01:28):
Who do you see it happening the most with?
Speaker 1 (01:31):
Is it because of a Andre mccoova being a Andrew
Andrew mccooba being here, or is it a Jelannie McDonald
who has stepped up? Or is it a Derek Williams
and a Michael Taft that are going to.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
Take that next step?
Speaker 3 (01:45):
Yeah, you know hard It's actually funny you ask it
from the perspective of an adjustment, right because and I
hate to put, you know, point the finger out one
or two players, but you go take a look at
the numbers. You go to Pro Football Focus, the worst
two tacklers of any full time defensive player on Texas
team last year, we're safety Sharon Thompson and Keaton Crawford.
Why do I single those guys out? Because whether it's
(02:07):
Steve Startisian or defensive corner of Pete Kotowski or others.
They all talked about the fact that Texasan's be better tacklers,
especially in the secondary this year. A lot of the
pass yags you go and look at the Houston game
last year, or the Tansas State game, or just some
of the games are teams you know, were throwing their
way back into games and a lot of it came
off of miss tackles. So to your question, I think
(02:29):
bring in and Andrew mccooba, having a Joline McDonald, guys
who have you know, reputations as sound tacklers, Johnny barn
being one of percent healthy. I think those things will
make a difference. And I even asked them Starkisian that
question on Monday. You know, hey, you have a dynamic
receiver and Tory Horden kid who's hauled in over one
hundred and seventy catches for you know, twenty four twenty
(02:50):
five hundred yards in the past two years. How are
you going to slow him down? And his answer was,
We've got to get him on the ground. You know,
it's a matter of when he gets the ball, get
him on the ground. And he has made a reference hard.
He said that guys are going to miscackle week one.
It's a matter of effort getting three, four and five
hats around the ball. That's something to keep my eye on,
(03:10):
especially in week one this early year, when you aren't
tackling as much in fall camp as you would back
in earlier days.
Speaker 4 (03:16):
Eric, Since we're on defense, let's go to Colorado State defense.
You know they had they lost a good linebacker last
year that was all over the place, but they still
have two guys that had over one hundred tackles. But
the guy that was the most effective was Kamara, their
defensive end or edge rusher that had thirteen sacks. Do
(03:41):
you how do you feel like he's going to fare
against this Texas offensive line.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
Yeah, I mean, big Mark, you know, it is at
that level, at the group of five level. When you
lose a guy in ed rusher like that who has
double digit sacks, I mean it's hard to replace him.
So for Colorado States defense as a whole, a defense
that you know, outside of quite frankly, really struggled last year.
You take a look at the safeties and Jack Cowell
and Justin Sanchez. Anytime you have two safeties over one
(04:07):
hundred tackles. That tells you that running back or getting
to the second third level of defense and they're making
touchdown saving tackles instead of making plays at the line
of scrimmage, right, And that's an area where I think
Texas has an opportunity to take advantage. Especially you know, hey,
you know, the forecast looks like it could be a
little rainy. You never know, we'll see what it looks like.
Comes kick a come kickoff. But especially for an air
(04:28):
raid offense like Colorado State is going to look to
throw the ball thirty thirty five or forty times a game.
In my perspective, that's going to allow Texas to have
this certain amount of possessions eight nine, ten, eleven, twelve
possessions to be able to grind the clock and use
guys like Jayden Blue and Jared Gibson another to get
those guys touches and really take advantage of where they're
(04:50):
going to win this game is in the trenches. You know,
for as many talents that Colorado State may have on offense,
they don't have the guys in the trenches to really
compete a four quarters.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
We're talking Aaric Henry of Horns twenty four to seven.
Make sure you get over to Horns twenty four to
seven for the latest and the greatest on all things
Texas Athletics and e.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
I wanted to bring that up too.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
You know, we talked about the trenches and how important
that this is going to be not only to keep
Quinn upright, but also to get to their quarterback. Their
quarterback has thrown for a lot of yards. He's a
Texas kid from Alito, so you know he wants to
come back here, probably had aspirations of coming to the
University of Texas.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
What does Texas have to do to get that.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
Quarterback on the ground, because they can get there, but
they have.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
To make sure they get them on the ground.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
Yeah. No, I mean it's a good call out on
your part, hard I think week one I don't want
to judge this Texas pass rush too harshly because again,
to take a look at that air raid offense, and
we're talking about, you know, the Colorado State version of
the air raid. Each team or a lot of teams
that run air ray have their own little wrinkle on it,
but this is probably the most original version of bit.
(06:00):
Colorado State's offensive coordinator Matt Mummy is the son of
hol Mummy, who of course kind of invented the air raid.
God Micro's Day to Kentucky. But I say all that
I played.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
Football against how Mummy when he was at copperce Cove
High School and that was the first time I saw
the air raid.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
There you go hard, So you know, you know from
his firsthand that ball want you to hit the quarterback's hands.
It's one read, two read, get it out, you know.
So there may be for guys like the edge rushers,
they may not have an opportunity just because the ball
is going to get out so quick. So what I'm
looking to see is that interior pass rush right an
area where last year Camandra swept Byron Murphy and others
(06:37):
really dominated in making opposing quarterbacks life difficult. This year
ac Burnham Broad and others just rushing up the middle,
can they make life difficult for as you said, the
Texas kid and Brayden Fowler. Nicolosi was coming home probably
looking to have a big time game in front of
friends and family. But in terms of getting home to
the quarterback to see on Saturday, excuse me, really looking
(06:57):
at that interior pass which as opposed to the edge
just because of how quickly the ball is going to
get out of filon Nikoloso Hams.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
We're talking to Eric Henry of Horns twenty four to seven.
Make sure you get over there. You also, I've talked
about this before and it's something that hadn't been brought
up a lot. It's the special teams factor in these
types of games. We still don't know for sure who's
going to be the punt returner or kickoff returner for Texas,
(07:25):
but this is where I love to see guys get better.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
Who do you think will be the game breaker for Texas?
Speaker 1 (07:33):
Is it going to be Matthew Golden for what he
was able to do while he was at U of
h Is it going to be a Silas Bowden, maybe
even an Isaiah Bond that might have a chance to
do some have an impactful piece to the special teams?
Speaker 3 (07:49):
Well, I'll say this. You know, I was someone who
was really campaigning hard for Jayden Blue to get some
kick return opportunities. That obvious is out the window, right
That's yeah, you know that's that's not gonna happen. So
to your point, yeah, I think you got to look
at the receivers. You gotta look at the guys who
experienced Matt Golden took two kicks back for touchdowns last year,
(08:09):
Silas Bolden over a thousand career kick returns, and Isaiah Bond.
You know, during fall camp we saw a lot of
him getting those first, those first set of reps in
the punt return game. So that is, to your point,
hard something you want to keep it on, especially in
a game like this because when it goes to a
deaf perspective, you think Texas is going to have better
athletes and better players on special teams. And also, let
(08:30):
us not forget that Michael Kerr was asked about during
the fall the true freshman punter and Steve Starkeisan did
say he got up to a bit of a slow
start get adjusted to college as you would expect the
kid who got her during the summer, But seemingly he
is going to hold down the punting duties. So in
addition to the return game out they keep an eye
on that. If for no other reason, you got to
go to Michigan week two, right, so you got to
(08:51):
get the seed wet now because you're going to have
one hundred and three thousand people screaming Michigan fans and
at some point Michael Kurrn wrapped the punt. Next week
you wanted to get a get some poss is momentum
heading in that direction for we too.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
There'll be one hundred thousand screaming here this weekend too,
so he might get a little bit, but they won't
be yelling at him, They'll be yelling for him. There
he is, my man, Eric Henry of Horns twenty four
to seven. Make sure you follow him on social media
at Eric c Henry Underscore and I will be reading.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
And looking for that prediction. Brother. I'll talk to you next.
Speaker 3 (09:22):
Week any time. Felt looking forward to it.
Speaker 4 (09:25):
Man.
Speaker 2 (09:26):
That's some good information right there.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
That's some stuff that we're gonna be paying attention to
as well.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
When we come back, I'm gonna talk a little bit
of baseball.
Speaker 1 (09:35):
I went to the Round Rock Express last night, and
the future is now, folks, The future is now right here.
On the morning kickoff on Sports Radio and thirteen hundred,
the Zogne
