about basketball season.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
Tipped off yesterday.
Speaker 1 (02:16):
It was all day action from men playing to the
women play and of course the NBA. But coach Shark
comes to us on Monday and you can hear it
all right here on Sports Radio Am thirteen hundred The
Zone on sports Radio. I want to make sure that
you get the full piece of this opening statement because
(02:41):
coach Shark went in depth with all of this and
they come off that big victory. There's some guys that
are banged up, but there are also some guys that
got some recognition this past week. And coach Sart talked
about his team and what he viewed on the videos.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
It was really good win.
Speaker 4 (02:58):
Force we knew going in Vanderbilt was a very good
football team, a top ten team in the country, and
the biggest thing about getting that win is to be
four and one in the SEC and UH to put
ourselves in position to compete for a conference championship here
with three weeks ago, I think is huge for us.
And so, you know, when you just look at the
(03:19):
game in general, I think that there was some some
really critical points to be.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
Made of how we played.
Speaker 4 (03:26):
You know, we really challenged the players on starting fast,
you know, of really coming out with an attack mindset,
and I think that we did that, you know, you know,
playing the first quarter up seventeen to nothing. We talked
a lot about how efficient Vanderbilt was as an offensive
football team and how could we get them off schedule,
(03:47):
and you know clearly we did that. I think we
had ten TFLs in the game, six sacks in the game.
And then conversely, offensively, how could we help the defense
that way?
Speaker 3 (03:58):
But also what what it was going to take.
Speaker 4 (04:00):
We knew going in it was going to be about
an eight to ten possession game, and so this wasn't
like Mississippi State where we I think we had sixteen
possessions in that game, and so we had to be
good early and we had to be efficient. Well, we
didn't give up any sacks and Vanderbilt I think he
had twenty one sacks coming into the game. We only
had one TfL in the game. Offensively, we were seven
(04:22):
for eleven on third down, but we put ourselves in
manageable third downs. We've talked about this about you know,
who were we going to be in third and one
to six and in this game or third and one
to seven. I think in this game we were six
to seven in those scenarios. And so when you put
yourselves in those situations, then you have to convert them
and we were able to do that, which which was
(04:42):
a huge component for us. And then coming out of halftime,
it was the same message to the team, how are
we going to start, how are we going to play
the second half? And to win the third quarter ten
to nothing. I think it was a huge component on
that front. I thought archs played a fantastic game, you know,
going back and really watching the tape now, numerous times
he was very efficient. I thought he threw the ball
(05:05):
extremely accurately. It's one thing not to throw the ball
down the field all the time, but you got to
put players in position to make plays with the ball
in their hands, and I thought our receivers really did that.
But the accuracy in which he threw the ball on
some of those throws, going back to the very first
pass to Ryan Wingo, I mean Ryan doesn't have to
break stride to catch that ball to go break those tackles,
(05:26):
and there were numerous plays like that in the game.
So he's playing at a high level for us right there.
And then you know, again the run game, I do
think there's more meat on the bone, even now, more
so than than after I watched the tape, So I
think there's room for improvement there for us. But to
outrush that team who leans into the run game, I
(05:49):
thought was big and you know, at the end of
the day, the fourth quarter, there's definitely things that that
we're going to have to improve upon on that front.
We should be better in those scenarios with the pass
rush that we have, but clearly we were. We were
banged up in the secondary and there was a moment
in there where we didn't have either starting corner, we
didn't have either starting safety, and we were holding on
(06:12):
a little bit. And we've got to play more with
the mindset of of going to win the game, not
just holding on holding on not to lose the game.
So that will be something that that we get to
work on. But I think this buy is coming at
a great time.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
You know.
Speaker 4 (06:25):
We we we we were able to survive that five
game stretch going four and one, and we found ways
to win games different differently week in and week out,
and and now we can get healthy and we can
get fresh, and that's really the biggest point of emphasis
for this week.
Speaker 3 (06:42):
We got to get healthy.
Speaker 4 (06:43):
We've got to get Michael taff, Jolana McDonald, Ryan Wingo. Mean,
there there's a there's enough guys that are banged up,
and they should be banged up. We've been playing a
lot of football in our conference, and it's November, so
we got to get healthy, we've got to get fresh,
and we've got to get ready for a very good
Georgia team here in a couple weeks. And so it's
a good place to be. It's good to be four
and one in the conference. We've got three big games
(07:05):
to go here in November, but none bigger than Georgia,
which is which is staring at us here in a
couple of weeks.
Speaker 3 (07:11):
You know.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
The one thing that he continues to talk about is
the growth of the starting quarterback. He continues to find
a way to flourish in the position at starting quarterbacks,
so much so that he was recognized as the Offensive
player of the Week for the SEC He's earned that,
(07:32):
he's earned that. He's gotten better every single week. And
I was talking to some people yesterday about him, and
people are are are starting to understand and something that
I said at the very beginning, the more reps that
he plays, the better he's going to be. The game
is going to slow down for him. And that is
(07:53):
exactly what has happened.
Speaker 3 (07:55):
I think it's slowed down for him.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
In at Mississippi State in that fourth quarter, he looked
like as good as I've ever seen it, and this
week proved again that things have slowed down. He made
throws that he would have missed two weeks ago. So
I'm seeing that. And I like the fact that Ko
(08:18):
Sark acknowledged what you said last week that sometimes you
cannot take your foot off the off the a him man,
because guys are they're they're gonna keep fighting, like and
we knew that if any team is gonna keep fighting,
it's gonna be Vanderbilt. Out of all of these teams
(08:41):
that you play, they have better talent, and other teams
they have more, they have greater coaches, but Vanderbilt has
players that are underachievers.
Speaker 3 (08:53):
Out of any team. To know to keep your foot
on your on a team's throat.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
Shouldn't Texas be that team with be You're right, Texas
should be the team It's like, look, we gotta lead.
We need to keep our foot on their throat exactly.
Everybody wants our.
Speaker 1 (09:08):
Blood well in Texas has come from behind to win
all these games too. I mean they've been battling, so
they know what it looks like. They know it can
be done, so they need to He understands it, and
that's what the challenge is. But one of the biggest
things that was discussed during the week or was what
was gonna happen with Cole Hudson. Cole Hudson came off
the injury list, so you automatically assume that he is
(09:31):
going to go back to center.
Speaker 3 (09:33):
Well he did not. He went back to left guard.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
He left Connor Robertson at center, and it seemed like
everything was where it needed to be.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
I do think that move.
Speaker 4 (09:47):
You know, I don't know if Cole and Connor are
the most physically gifted offensive lineman we have in that room,
but what they do have is experience. What they do
have is they're smart, and what they do have is
they're tough. And those guys exude all three of those things,
especially when they're playing together. And I think there's some
confidence in there of for Connor, if there's any uncertainty,
(10:10):
Cole knows the calls is good or better than anybody.
I think there's some confidence in there in Trevor where
he doesn't feel like he has to make every call,
that the guard in there can make those calls. And
so I just think the continuity, which is something that
we've been fighting for and striving force at the beginning
of the season.
Speaker 3 (10:26):
Is good for us.
Speaker 4 (10:27):
And again, I don't know if that's the most physically
gifted group of an offensive line that we can put
out there, but surely they play well together and that
showed up Saturday.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
You hear what he said. He said, they're smart and
they're tough. Smart. It is a byproduct of experience, but
also the fact that you just get it and you
know the playbook and you can make those line calls
on the fly.
Speaker 3 (10:54):
And we talked about that the last three weeks that.
Speaker 2 (10:57):
They have not been able to make the correct line calls,
and even to the point where we had Anthony Williams
on I was like, man like, who's making.
Speaker 3 (11:05):
The line calls?
Speaker 2 (11:06):
Like should one of these linemen dude or should the
quarterback dud it? He said, no, the lineman should definitely
the center. It's the center, he's the quarterback.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
That's why I said at the very beginning of the year,
missing Jake Majors is the most underestimated part of what
is going on. What was going on with this offensive line.
Now they've got some reps too, they're getting repsn't recognized it.
Coach Shark talked about people shifting at the last second.
Speaker 3 (11:32):
They didn't know what to do.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
Now they've seen it a bunch of times, so they've
been able to adjust to those types of things. So
the team is growing up right before our very eyes.
But the biggest challenge is in two weeks when they
take on the Georgia Bulldogs. When we come back, we're
gonna talk Texas women's basketball. And here from coach Vick
Schaeffer after a big victory.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
In the opening game of the twenty twenty five basketball season.
Speaker 1 (12:00):
Right here on the morning kickoff on sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone, Texas women's basketball does play here
and as last night they played at the Moody Center,
you could have heard Craig Way, the voice of the
Texas Longhorns. As long as all Texas Longhorns sports are
(12:22):
played right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone,
you will hear the voice of the Texas Longhorns, Craig Way.
Speaker 3 (12:29):
Last night.
Speaker 1 (12:30):
He had a big time matchup well for the women
because it was their first game. They ended up beating
Incarnate Word yesterday one twenty three to fifty one. And
I know it doesn't seem close, because it wasn't. They
were getting after it from the jump, and they continued
the pressure the entire game. You know how you talk
(12:50):
about putting pressure on somebody, that is how you do it.
They put pressure on incarnate word the entire time. They
had a couple five second calls coach Vic Shaeffer trying
to get up eight count early in the ball game
because of the way that the defense was being played.
They were attacking, attacking, attacking, but everybody was waiting to
(13:11):
see obviously Madison Booker and Rory Harmon, but they were
waiting to see what the new freshman Aliah Crump was
able to do.
Speaker 5 (13:20):
Harmon on the left side on the dribbling Jordan the
lead of the right wing. Now off to Krump. She'll
step back to fire up a three of drains. Her
first bucket is a Texas longhorn, and it's a three
pointer for e Leah Crump.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
And that was just her first one. They Vick Schaefer
said they were going to shoot. He got some shooters
out there now, and they continue to make shots.
Speaker 5 (13:42):
Outside long range. Three Aliah Krump, it's good. She knocks
down her second. Crump with eight here in the first
quarter and the long Horns lead at sixteen to two.
Speaker 1 (13:52):
Well, and if that wasn't enough, she continued to score
in the first quarter.
Speaker 3 (13:58):
On the base line.
Speaker 5 (14:00):
Tim Dallas Madison cockle seeking a target looking since it
is stolen underneath by Crump, She'll score off the glass.
That's like a pick six, you see, where there's nobody
out there but the defensive back.
Speaker 1 (14:12):
A Leah Crump came in and was not shot about
shooting the basketball. She was seven of sixteen last night
and finished with sixteen points. Jordan Lee she also not
afraid to shoot it, nine of fourteen, three to five
from three point Land had twenty one points, Madison Booker eighteen,
Bria Cunningham the Transfer had sixteen, and of course Kyla
(14:37):
Oldecker coming off the bench had sixteen as well. Big
time matchup, big time excuse me. She had seventeen and
Brianna Preston had sixteen.
Speaker 3 (14:48):
That's a lot of balance and from each position too.
Speaker 2 (14:52):
Absolutely, when you have all your positions scored near the
same thing, either it was intentional or you just have
great balance. And uh, I'm looking forward to getting over
there and catching some games man, because uh, you know,
we We talked to coach Vic last year and asked
him about the.
Speaker 3 (15:10):
Three point mark. We shoot the ball, yep. I mean
we choose to shoot it closer and play defense.
Speaker 2 (15:18):
But now he I guess he's uh, he's kind of
he's kind of letting him do the thing now, right.
That's that's what brings into recruits. People want to score
and they're shooting the ball.
Speaker 1 (15:31):
I mean Aliah Crump, she she looks like she's ready
to play at this level.
Speaker 3 (15:37):
You know.
Speaker 1 (15:37):
I talked to coach Vic Shaeffer at one of the
press conferences and he was talking about freshmen being able
to adjust to the speed. You know, you could play fast,
but are you playing fast under control? While you're playing fast?
Are you being sped up at times where you get
out of control? And Aliah Crump plays with control every
(16:00):
now and even good last night.
Speaker 3 (16:02):
Yeah, Every now and then you have a freshman that
they're just different.
Speaker 6 (16:05):
You know.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
We always talk about Cooper Flag. He's been different every
level that he ever went to.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
And TJ.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
Ford was one of those guys just you knew in
high school he was going to be a pro. Yeah,
And the same thing with Kevin Durant. You know, there's
some guys that are just they're they're more well equipped
for it, and she's one of those players.
Speaker 1 (16:26):
Well, you know, I sit and I look at the
basketball game and watch the rhythm in which teams are playing,
and not only your offense, but how your rhythm is
moving on defense and what you're doing with everybody else.
Because the pace is one thing, but if you can
(16:48):
create the pace and make people react to your pace,
it's something that's totally different. And that's what Texas has
been able to do the women.
Speaker 3 (16:58):
I know it was incarnate word.
Speaker 1 (16:59):
I'm not I'm not jumping out here and crowning them
as national champions, but that that's the difference of the
level when you watch a team like Texas play and
you get a chance to watch a team like uh
incarnate word. I was talking yesterday about basketball and what
we kept trying to make people understand is Texas is
(17:21):
a basketball school.
Speaker 3 (17:23):
Friend brought this up.
Speaker 1 (17:25):
People don't look at him as Yukon or or or
Notre Dame or some of those schools, but Texas is
just as good as all those schools, and they continue
to recruit at that level too. And Vic Schaeffer's style
is we are going to put pressure on the ball
because what most people don't know how to handle the
(17:46):
pressure when when when they have the ball.
Speaker 3 (17:48):
I thought it was one of the best things that
I saw.
Speaker 2 (17:52):
There was a Facebook post by a fan there was
a steal and on that steel. You should have saw
everybody run to the other side so fast filled their lanes.
Speaker 3 (18:07):
It was textbook that's coaching.
Speaker 2 (18:10):
I mean, you gotta have great athletes, but they were
running to the spot yep, on the steel.
Speaker 3 (18:18):
I'm just I think that there are things.
Speaker 2 (18:21):
That they've done so well in the year's past under
Koche for defensively, that if a little bit like a
ten increase in offense. Texas beats a lot of teams
that they lost to last year, including South Carolina. Well,
they have the preseason SEC player of the Year in
(18:41):
Madison Bucker.
Speaker 3 (18:42):
She continues to play well.
Speaker 1 (18:44):
They'll be back on the court on the seventh, hosting Richmond.
Then they play again on the tenth. They've got a
bunch of home games coming up. So Texas women's basketball
is here to stay. They are fun to watch and
if you know anything about Vick Schaeffer, he demands that
(19:04):
you give all out effort every single time.
Speaker 3 (19:07):
There is no in between.
Speaker 1 (19:08):
You can sit over there on that bench and think
about how much effort you want to put in, you
know what I'm saying, because if not, you're not gonna
be on the floor. I mean, it's just it is
just what it is. So I'm just curious to see
and watch this team grow as they continue to go
through the season. As I said, they won yesterday one
twenty three to fifty one. Richmond comes in, they're the
(19:30):
number twenty four ranked team in the country.
Speaker 3 (19:34):
They buy them on Friday night, seven o'clock. Tip.
Speaker 1 (19:37):
You can hear that game right here on sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred, the Zone and always free on the
iHeart app. Then on Monday, they take on the Louisiana
Lafayette Raging Cagns, then Texas Southern and James Madison before
they head out to Las Vegas for Thanksgiving and they
play UCLA and the winner of South Carolina and the
(20:00):
next day. So it is a big time time, big
time moments for this Texas basketball team. Is they starting
to ramp up right away? There's no easy wins on
this thing.
Speaker 3 (20:13):
In that Vegas trip, that sounds nasty.
Speaker 1 (20:17):
In South Carolina and Duke are there as well, so
they'll play either one of those teams win or lose
depending on how they do against UCLA. And the UCLA
is another one of the teams that Fran was talking
about yesterday. And if you missed our interview with lifetime
Longhorn and legend Fran Harris, get over to our podcast
(20:38):
page wherever you get your podcasts, but we prefer.
Speaker 3 (20:41):
You do it on the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (20:43):
But you can hear her talk about some of these
teams and what the expectations are moving forward for all
of them.
Speaker 3 (20:51):
Yeah, and Texas is right there.
Speaker 2 (20:53):
And when I say right there, I don't mean as
an afterthought or oh we're with them, No, we're at
the top. I mean Texas actually beat South Carolina last year.
It's not many teams can say they did that.
Speaker 1 (21:06):
Yeah, but South Carolina is going through some things too
because they are losing. They lost one of their best
players for the year. They're big posts, so she's out
for the year. So they're gonna see but it's South Carolina.
Speaker 3 (21:21):
They gonna, they.
Speaker 1 (21:21):
Gonna, They're gonna have somebodies in there to make sure
that they're good too. Speaking of getting ready to talk
some more sports. We've got our guy Joe Cook of
Inside Texas joining us to talk all things Texas Longhorns.
Speaker 3 (21:37):
What he heard from.
Speaker 1 (21:38):
The press conference yesterday, which I thought was very interesting
because coach Sark stretched.
Speaker 3 (21:43):
It out a little bit.
Speaker 1 (21:44):
And don't forget coming up at the top of the hour,
we will talk to our guy Tommy Yarsh and of
course will talk to Mark VanderMeer, the voice of the
Houston Texans. Because you know what today is, folks. Trade deadline. Yeah,
all that's happening in the NFL today, and the Cowboys
already made a trade right here on the Morning Kickoff
(22:07):
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. It's a
turn the page Tuesday edition of the Morning Kickoff right
here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. And
that means we get a chance to talk to our guy,
Joe Cook of Inside Texas. You could follow him at
Joseph Cook eighty nine and.
Speaker 3 (22:26):
Joe, I want to get right into the game.
Speaker 1 (22:28):
From Saturday, Texas came out and they were hitting on
all cylinders offensively, defensively, they played an unbelievable first half.
What was some of the biggest takeaways from you when
you saw how Texas was able to establish a dominance
right away.
Speaker 3 (22:48):
Yeah, it was a man good thing. Arch Manning's playing.
Speaker 7 (22:52):
You know, we had gone all week last week kind
of wondering whether it would be Arch, whether it be
Matthew Caldwell.
Speaker 3 (22:58):
You know, he got off that injury report I think
on Friday night, and you know, was going through warm
ups like, okay, what's he gonna look like?
Speaker 7 (23:05):
And you know, two for five start, But then he
went on a heater like we saw what we all
wanted to see and kind of expected to see from Arch.
I guess when we levied some of those lofty preseason
expectations on him, and he was doing great stuff. You know,
it got interesting at the end there because secondary, which
was already dinged up, got even more banged up. Had
(23:26):
a lot of second third string guys playing there the secondary.
Speaker 3 (23:29):
And you know, even even though you are.
Speaker 7 (23:31):
Second and third string guys at a place like Texas,
starters in the SEC or starters in the SEC no
matter what team they're on, and those guys were having
some issues back there.
Speaker 3 (23:42):
But Longhorns get a.
Speaker 7 (23:44):
Good couple bounces on a kickoff out of bounds and
ended up holding on at the end there.
Speaker 2 (23:48):
Joe, you had some of those young guys that you
mentioned in on the secondary, did anybody stand out to
you like, Wow, this guy should give a little bit
more playing time.
Speaker 6 (24:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (24:02):
When you looked at that secondary, there were you know,
I think two true freshmen, a red shirt freshman, and
maybe a third true freshman and then another red shirt freshman.
So like, there were a lot of young guys. But
I liked what I saw from Cade Phillips. He's someone
who's gotten a cornerback who's gotten a good amount of
regular snaps over the course of the season. They haven't
(24:22):
just limited him to garbage time and blowouts, and they
targeted him a couple of times and teams have I
think teams know whatever he's in there and think, Okay,
let's try to take our shot at this true freshman.
And he's always been up to the task. He's got
quite a few pass breakups this year. I think Sark
shouted him out during his Monday press conference. And so
(24:43):
he's someone, you know, I think has done a really
great job and his limited opportunities and kind of bodes
well for the future of the position.
Speaker 1 (24:50):
I feel like, yeah, you know, DBU is getting his
work for sure. You even had a Jonah Williams sighting
at the end of the ball game, so that's good
that he's getting a chance a play as well. But
on the other hand, you start to look on the
defensive side of the ball. With the defensive ends. Ethan
Burke is making himself some money weekend and week out.
(25:10):
Colin Simmons co Defensive Lineman of the Week again. That
pass rush which got to the quarterback six times on
Saturday has been very, very impressive.
Speaker 7 (25:24):
Yeah, Vanderbilt entering this game was I think one of
the best in the country in terms of not allowing
not getting taken down in the backfield. A lot of
that is, you know, the result of their offense and
some of the option things they do. But you know,
when they had to get into the pass happy mode,
Texas started teeing off and Colin Simmons did most of
his work in the first half, but then Ethan Burke
did the closing. You wish they could have closed a
(25:46):
little bit better with that fourth and nineteen play, but
all the same, you know, Ethan Burke, Colin Simmons, Brad Spence,
Zeno Umio Zulu.
Speaker 3 (25:54):
Lance Jackson.
Speaker 7 (25:55):
Like all those guys, each one has made a play
at a certain point in this season, you know, during
meaningful moments as well.
Speaker 3 (26:02):
So that position is really strong.
Speaker 7 (26:04):
And you know, Colin Simmons gets the glory for you know,
conference accolades, but that's a that's a position group that
kind of needs its own accolades.
Speaker 3 (26:13):
I think as a you know, one big unit.
Speaker 2 (26:15):
No doubt, Joe h we give a lot of credit
to these defensive players. Uh, but they went to that
race car package where Ethan Burke played tackle, and man,
they I love that. I've turned the hard several times
during the game going. Man, I'm I'm really digging seeing
Ethan at too at the two technique? Is that is
(26:38):
that a spot that we we should look forward to
seeing him and and do we give coach k some
of that love?
Speaker 6 (26:48):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (26:48):
That that that's a pretty interesting thing to see when
he's in those passing situations because you know a lot
of the I.
Speaker 3 (26:56):
Always kind of like to notice that.
Speaker 7 (26:57):
You know, defense have scheme has schemes too, and they
like to scheme up mismatches at the same time. So
when you have all those pass rushers on the field,
what that maybe gives you an opportunity for is okay,
you put these guys in a certain spot and you
get this guy one on one and maybe that's Colin
Simmons on a tackle, or maybe it's you know, Alex January.
Speaker 3 (27:16):
On a center.
Speaker 7 (27:17):
Well, sometimes it can be Ethan Burke one on one
with the guard if they take advantages of protections that
certain way, and that can be you know that that's
something that his quickness is translates pretty well.
Speaker 3 (27:29):
And then also he just has the power too, So
I like seeing that.
Speaker 7 (27:34):
But when they're in that situation, that means you don't
know where the pressure is coming from, you don't know
where they're scheming it up for, and it's a pretty
lethal option that Texas has in its back pocket.
Speaker 3 (27:45):
We're talking to Joe Cook of Inside Texas.
Speaker 1 (27:46):
Make sure you follow them at Joseph Cook eighty nine
and get over to Inside Texas and on three for
all the latest Joe coach Sart talked about the college
football playoff rankings come out to night and that he
was going to be able to watch him for the
first time in a while because they're on a bye week.
(28:07):
You know, Texas is sitting at thirteen everybody's making a
big deal about Oklahoma being ranked ahead of them after
they beat them ahead to head, But this is the
rankings that all that matter moving forward.
Speaker 7 (28:19):
Yeah, this is the one that you know, I usually
use the ape pole for whatever number I put in
front of teams about to start switching it up to
the college football playoff numbers. And you know, I know
there are a lot of people who see these rankings
and they're like, it doesn't matter until the very end. Well,
I kind of tend to disagree, because this is this
is how they show their work, This is how they
(28:40):
show their thought process. There are some years where that
thought process is consistent throughout the entire you know, month
of November and December, and then there are some years
where it's like, last.
Speaker 3 (28:52):
Week, we're gonna do something different.
Speaker 7 (28:53):
And I know that could be frustrating, but I feel
like you have to pay attention to this. We also,
you know, we get the head of the Selection Committee
or I think the executive chairman of the CFP, one
of those two. They go on a conference call right
after and they kind of explain what they're thinking was
and sometimes it's just empty words. But you know, a
(29:15):
lot of people last year were asking about Texas and they're, oh,
they haven't played anybody, Oh they got one law, so
oh why are they still ahead.
Speaker 3 (29:21):
Of Georgia stuff like that.
Speaker 7 (29:23):
Whereas you know, this year, maybe we'll hear some questions
about why the Aggies.
Speaker 3 (29:27):
Are where they are, why the Hoosiers are where they are.
Speaker 7 (29:30):
I would be I feel like it's a pretty safe
bet to put you know, Ohio State at number one,
but for some reason, I think the committee could be
a little contrarian, maybe throw the Hoosiers up there. So
I'm just happy this year that pretty much with that
with you know, say for a few exceptions, what you
see on the screen is what you see on the bracket.
(29:52):
You don't have to, you know, take the number six
seed who's the first conference champion and put them into
the three seed or stuff like that, Like unless you
get some wacky stuff where these conference champions are outside
the top twelve. Uh, you know, you're you're gonna be
able to see what's the rankings are and then see
what the bracket is, and it translates pretty cleanly.
Speaker 2 (30:12):
Joe, you you have four Texas has four SEC wins.
Speaker 3 (30:18):
How is Virginia ahead of them?
Speaker 7 (30:21):
You know, I this is one thing that the sport
is getting used to and that you can be undefeated,
but we have to look at what undefeated in the
in the ACC is, who they've beaten, who they've played,
and then you have to look at who Texas plays
and and that is a big struggle for me too,
because last year there are a lot of people clamoring
(30:43):
for Alabama to get into the playoff over teams like Indiana,
over teams like SMU, and I understand that to a
certain point. You know, I think you can look at
strength of conference and stuff like that to make up
for one win, you know, when you're looking at it
and two team versus a nine and three team. And
I think one of the big controversies the last year
(31:05):
about Alabama.
Speaker 3 (31:06):
Is like, let's not forget they were a number eleven.
Speaker 7 (31:08):
It's not like they were you know, banished to number
sixteen or anything like that. They were the first team
out and they had three losses. I don't think that
was a snub. I think that was looking at it
the right way. But I feel like last year, even
all the strength of conference and strength of record stuff.
Speaker 3 (31:24):
And all the different things, it's it.
Speaker 7 (31:26):
Can be enough to make up for one, you know,
one game of difference. But it's gonna be hard for
these committee members to make up for two games. Like
if you've got an eleven and one team that goes
and loses its conference title game like SMU last year,
and then you've got a nine and three team that
didn't even play in its conference title game. That I
don't think strength of conference should make up more than
(31:49):
maybe just over a game of difference, unless it's something
super crazy like a Power four team versus a group
of sixteen.
Speaker 3 (31:57):
But that's why they only have one slot.
Speaker 7 (31:58):
So you know, I think what we'll see is, you know,
you'll see Virginia ahead of a lot of teams that
they'd probably be and again this only goes so far.
They'd be an underdog against the neutral feel on a
neutral field. Well, we play the games on the field,
and Virginia has won all their to their credit. But
I think the committee knows that they can, you know,
they can look at things a little bit differently as
(32:20):
a result of some of the metrics in front of them.
Just how much they use those metrics to maybe change
some places.
Speaker 3 (32:26):
We'll see starting tonight.
Speaker 1 (32:28):
That's right, we'll see it all go down tonight as
the first official college football rankings will come out. As always, Joe,
great insight, and we appreciate you for joining us.
Speaker 3 (32:39):
Brother, Thank you, Joe, absolutely, thank you. Guys. There is
Joe Cook of Inside Texas.
Speaker 1 (32:44):
When we come back, we'll close out our number one
and talk a little bit about the low lights that
we saw last night with the Dallas Cowboys right here
on the morning kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred.
Those great stuff from Joe Cook a bit side Texas.
Make sure you follow them at Joseph Cook eighty nine
talking all things Texas Longhorns. We are your home for
(33:08):
all Longhorns athletics. You got the chance to see the
women kick off their basketball season last night and you
got to hear it right here on Sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone. The men will tip off tonight
against Duke in Charlotte. You can listen to that at
ninety eight point one KVET. But you can also listen
(33:30):
to the Dallas Cowboys and last night the Dallas Cowboys
you can hear them on ninety eight point one FM.
The Dallas Cowboys do what the Dallas Cowboys always do,
and that is make folks angry because of the simple
fact that they can't close out ball games or win
a game that they're supposed to. They go up against
a backup quarterback in Jacoby Brissett. In Jacoby, let them
(33:55):
know that, Hey, just because Kyler's not here, don't mean
that I don't run this stadium.
Speaker 3 (34:01):
Fourth and goal.
Speaker 8 (34:02):
They got denied last week in Denver, had to settle
for a field goal. They don't want to do that tonight.
Press got in trouble and down he goes.
Speaker 9 (34:12):
That's sweat.
Speaker 8 (34:16):
Hicks the Jets, and he's tripped up into fifteen. The
extra offensive lineman back in there, jumbo formation, and there
he is Harrison. They're infield goal range for Aubrey. It's
third down in seventeen. Here is Ferguson calls out and
(34:38):
into the arms a Buddha baker O'Donnell has it blocked
into the end zone in a race and a touchdown.
Sam Williams blocking.
Speaker 3 (34:58):
Kneeling the touchdown.
Speaker 8 (35:00):
Put some time back on precent. Touchdown first and going
from the twelve percent, let's apply m jump McBride touchdown
their first possession of the second half. Prescott in trouble
and second by sweat his second of the night. Now
(35:26):
from the five Prescott ends on Foy touchdown.
Speaker 5 (35:33):
The first of the night.
Speaker 3 (35:36):
And that's it. Now.
Speaker 1 (35:38):
If I told you we came in today and I said,
don't know the score, and I said, one team had
twenty three first downs, another one had twenty two. One
team was seven of thirteen on third down, one was
five of twelve. They both ran sixty five plagues. One
had three hundred and forty yards of total offense. The
(35:59):
other had three hundred and thirty three yards of total offense.
They both averaged five point two per game, I mean
per per play. You would think that your team at
least had a chance. And it was close.
Speaker 3 (36:14):
Yeah, that was a heck of a game.
Speaker 1 (36:16):
Yeah, and it was twenty seven to seventeen, a ten
point loss. Oh, by the way, you got one of
those touchdowns on a block punt that was recovered in.
Speaker 3 (36:27):
The end zone. Big, oh my god.
Speaker 1 (36:30):
Man, and your quarterbacks, both quarterbacks got sacked five times.
Speaker 3 (36:35):
Texas Texas, the Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 1 (36:38):
Well, they decided to fumble the ball three times last night.
Two of them were not being recovered. Don't put that,
moj on. I did not try to change it, I
try to change it. I'm I'm a Dak Prescott fan.
Speaker 2 (36:53):
Dak did me no favorites last night because you know
I have him as my quarterback in leg.
Speaker 3 (37:01):
Fifteen points.
Speaker 2 (37:03):
If he would have gave me twenty points, I would
have won the Money League.
Speaker 3 (37:09):
Okay, I'm I'm gonna chreat you like I hurt man.
I'm gonna church you like I treat you. All the
fans that talk bad about.
Speaker 2 (37:14):
That, I'm not talking bad. I didn't say nothing bad.
I said that he gave me fifteen What did your
other players do?
Speaker 3 (37:21):
Huh?
Speaker 1 (37:21):
Where were they at? How come they couldn't give you
five more each? How come they couldn't do that for you?
Why are you always putting it on the back of
number four? That's right, Number four can only do so much.
Happy you know, I.
Speaker 3 (37:35):
Have to break out this got to break out. The
church of you almost started again. Listen.
Speaker 2 (37:41):
That is normally a quarterback that's going to give you
twenty He's also a guy that's gonna give you a
passer rating above one hundred.
Speaker 1 (37:49):
Yeah, and he didn't do that because every week that's
what we expect, right.
Speaker 2 (37:55):
Well, so our expectations is putting pressure on him as.
Speaker 1 (37:59):
An NFL quarterback, not at all, But you know how
hard that is.
Speaker 3 (38:04):
Why are you taking up for this man like this?
Because he's my quarterback. He's always OKT. Yeah, he's my quarterback. Man.
I just need people to quit the hate on my God.
Speaker 2 (38:17):
I don't hate on him. I just was disappointed. You
have the right to remain silent. Our number one is
in the books. Our number two is just around the corner.
Our guy, Tommy Yarsh of.
Speaker 1 (38:34):
Dallas Cowboys dot Com, you better have some answers for
us as we try to find out.
Speaker 3 (38:41):
Can I go ahead and cash that ticket that I
had for them? Getting them with it?
Speaker 1 (38:45):
Right here on the morning Kickoff on sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone.
Speaker 3 (38:51):
Welcome back to our number two of the morning.
Speaker 1 (38:53):
Kickoff right here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Mike Harball, hards World strongest Man d Mark And of
course we got our guy Marcus behind the boards.
Speaker 3 (39:03):
And we and our number one. We got a chance
to hear from coach Sark.
Speaker 1 (39:06):
We also talked about Texas women as they defeated Incarnate
Word yesterday one twenty three to fifty one, and we
got a chance to talk to Joe Cook of Inside Texas.
We played the low lights of the Dallas Cowboys as
they lose twenty seven to seventeen. And to talk all
about it is our guy Tommy Yarish of Dallascowboys dot Com.
(39:29):
You can follow them at Tommy Underscore Yards.
Speaker 3 (39:33):
Tommy, it was not a.
Speaker 1 (39:34):
Good look for the Dallas Cowboys last night.
Speaker 3 (39:37):
But where do we start?
Speaker 10 (39:41):
We start with this is the third straight week where
I'm asking Mark Henry if there's anything going on for
him week after next So hey, you got some time
to ramp up if you want, because they won't need
you until next Monday. But yeah, man, it is It's
not great.
Speaker 3 (39:58):
It's not it at all.
Speaker 10 (40:00):
This defense is what it's been the entire season, which
is lacklusser and especially through the air last night. Obviously,
Deron Bland was the one sticking point that with just
he had a rough night, maybe the worst night of
his career. They kept picking on him and it was difficult.
And then yeah, the defense, kind of the defensive line especially,
(40:23):
I thought one of the better games. I think Genevion
Colonie had his best game as a Cowboy. Donovan Azaraku
continues to get better and better every week, and then
Kenny Clark had a nice bounce back night. But ultimately,
when your pass rush is waiting until the third or
fourth quarter to get a live and really start making
an impact on the game, and they can't get home
on early blitzes, then he got a problem. And so
(40:46):
that just overall. And then of course the offense not
being in stride for the second straight week when you
know essentially they have to play perfect for Dallas to
have a chance in the majority of these games doesn't
help either. So I think the bye wee comes in
a good time for the Cowboys. We need to reset,
look at themselves in the mirror, which is something they've
said over and over and over, and you know, it's
(41:09):
kind of reset going into the rest of the season,
which is all the more difficult.
Speaker 2 (41:14):
Well, I'm going to try to stay positive and I'm
not gonna dwell on any negativity.
Speaker 3 (41:22):
We're at a bye week. That's where it ends. Now.
Speaker 2 (41:27):
My thing is is a lot of these guys that
are playing in the secondary and these linebackers, they had
to know, They had to know before the season that
these guys were not they were not good enough to
play high caliber NFL football, Like, who is making the
(41:53):
decisions on personnel.
Speaker 10 (41:57):
For the defense, uh, personnel wise, I mean that's you know,
that's Matt Eberflus for the rest of his coaching staff.
I mean they ultimately it's up to them to decide,
you know, who goes out on the field. And in
terms of acquiring personnel, that's a team wide thing, from
you know, the Jones family, to Will McClay to Alex
(42:19):
Lomis the director of pro scouting, to the coaching staff too.
So really this kind of falls on on everybody, right
I think they they went out and got guys that
you know, were high upside players, and some of them
have worked, some of them haven't. And that's just kind
of what you live with when you're on your third
defensive coordinator in three years and you just don't have
(42:44):
a lot of great personnel and defensively and you know,
and I know, and then you send your best player
away six days before the Seaton starts.
Speaker 3 (42:53):
Excuse me.
Speaker 10 (42:54):
So I think that's that's where you're seeing a personnel
stem is just you know, right now, the Cowboys just
don't have a lot of great personnel on the defensive
side of the football. And that's why I've been of
the opinion that those draft picks are so important because
you can really hammer building the future of your defense
in the draft the next couple of years, especially when
(43:16):
you've got four first round picks as it stands right now.
And so and then, of course the Cowboys go out
and make a train today. Can we confirm earlier that
they sent a seventh round pick in twenty twenty sixth
to the Cincinnati Bengals for Logan Wilson, the linebacker whom
is signed for the next three years underth contract. And
so that's positive, and you know, it's a low risk,
(43:39):
high upside move that you know, the bar is so
low in the linebacker room that it's hard to imagine
Wilson doesn't help immediately. And then and this Dallas linebacker
room can can look completely different when we come out
of the buy because the marve On movershow is coming back.
So if it's a wild Wilson overshown room, then how
(44:02):
much that changed things I don't know, But I think
for defensively, there's blame to go around the entire way
for their shortcomings so far this year.
Speaker 1 (44:12):
We're talking to Tommy Yarsh at Dallas Cowboys dot com.
You can follow them at Tommy Underscore Yards. And you
brought it up about Demarvin Overshown, but I also wanted
to go back to the defensive secondary. This is something
where a bunch of guys have been banged up and
you're still trying to find pieces to get this done.
(44:32):
Is there a place or a spot where you find
that there is going to be some help coming back
sooner than later. I saw that they signed Dion Childress
and promoted him to the practice squad. You put Trayvon
Diggs on IR so your opportunities are a little bit different.
Speaker 10 (44:53):
Now, Yeah, they are different. I think you know the
linebacker room is the biggest area of help on the way,
and he has overshown is when he is fully healthy
and when he's fully going, And obviously we'll see how
just how healthy he is and just how full goat
he is after two major knee surgeries in the last
couple of years. But when he is playing the way
(45:15):
that he has played with his hair on fire, he's
one of the more dynamic players for the Cowboys defense,
and they can do so much for you in terms
of how quickly you can close to the ball and
then you know, we'll see what Logan Wilson is. This
has not been his best year by any means, and
of course you know he hasn't seen as much time.
Speaker 3 (45:33):
On the field.
Speaker 10 (45:34):
I think his request to get out of Cincinnati was
part of the reason why he wasn't playing as much,
because the guys that were in front of him certainly
haven't been doing a better job. I mean, if you
think about defenses that somehow could be worse than the
Cowboys unit, Cincinnati would probably be up there. And then
at a cornerback. You know, this group is really high
(45:56):
on some pun revel with rookie third round pick out
of East Carolina. He's looking like he'll be set to
come back. They will make his NFL debut, I should say,
in after the bye week against Las Vegas. Now, how
much can you put on his plate early is the
question there. I don't know if necessarily thrown him straight
into the fire and having a start in his first
(46:16):
NFL game coming off of major knee injury would be
the best idea. But when he gets his feet under him,
they really think that he can be a great player
and help out in this secondary a lot. So He's
a tall, longer corner with great cover skills. Just watching
him in practice, I mean, he moves really well and
it's difficult to tell that he's coming off.
Speaker 6 (46:39):
A big knee injury.
Speaker 10 (46:41):
So they're hopeful that that help on the wake and
can try to bolster some things up.
Speaker 2 (46:46):
We're hoping that el Zeraku can play more on the
right end, left side at end.
Speaker 3 (46:53):
Like, is there a.
Speaker 2 (46:54):
Reason that they don't use him more effectively?
Speaker 10 (47:02):
I think I think part of it is him still,
you know, stipping up and learning the NFL spear and
getting his feet under him there as as most rookies
have to do. But I think, you know, you look
at last night as his first NFL Star. I haven't
checked the snap count, but I can imagine that's probably
the most he's played in a game. And I think
they found a nice little complimentary piece on the other
(47:23):
side of Jadavian Clowney.
Speaker 7 (47:24):
Uh.
Speaker 10 (47:25):
You know, look at the two of them together last
night had the best night of any of the Cowboys
as pass rushers, I would say, And you know, you
put a younger guy on one side and the veteran
on the other side, it's gonna be difficult to handle.
And as Rock, who's got so many things that he
can do. In terms of how much he's worked on
speed to power. I think that's been their biggest point
of emphasis with him, who is getting that down pat
(47:47):
and then, like I said, the veteran presidence of Jadavian
Clowney having that in the room to teach him the
ropes and show him how it's done. A former first
round pick who had to, you know, kind of finest
footing too in the NFL, even though he was so
highly regarded out of South Carolina. I think he is
coming along well and the Cowboys are going to be
very pleased with them in the long term.
Speaker 1 (48:09):
I do want to ask you this, because that last
night Dak did not seem to be in rhythm.
Speaker 3 (48:17):
Is this something that you think that they're picking.
Speaker 1 (48:19):
Up on the coverages where they're starting to see that
they're trying to get the ball out of their hands
quick and some of these guys aren't adjusting their routes yet.
Speaker 10 (48:33):
Maybe that may it may be just miscommunication and smaller things.
I don't know if it's necessarily something to read into
too much, but it also might just be. Look, we're
nine games into the season now, and when we started
the year, the Sprideshine hand an advantage in the sense
that people knew what he was a play caller in
(48:55):
the past. They hadn't been a play caller in so
long that you really don't know what you're gonna you know,
you don't know what you're gonna get from him, and
you don't have an offense on film, and he didn't
show a lot on film in the preseason. He had
the comment about the seven Iron in terms of not
showing everything that they had in the bag. And and
(49:15):
now he had eight nine games film on you, and
defenses start to figure things out a little bit. So
you know, I think that that that all plays a
reason to it. And sure that some of the routes
were office. I think I think about the fourth down
play to to ceedee Lambs where uh Dak should after
the key. Dak got asked about it after the game
(49:36):
and he was like, do you feel like you held
out of the ball for too long? And he said,
if I got onto the ball for another half a second,
I was gonna be clobbered. So you know, it's little
things like that that when defense start to figure out
and then maybe you've got to sharpen the details a
little bit more. And I'm not concerned long term about
this offense. I think they're just too too good and
(49:57):
I have way too many good playmakers to, you know,
really give you any sort of concern or stomp it
about what they can do.
Speaker 3 (50:05):
No doubt.
Speaker 1 (50:06):
There is Tommy Yars from Dallas Cowboys dot Com. Make
sure you follow him at Tommy Underscore Yards. I'm gonna
give you a break this week, and then we'll get
back at it next week after the Cowboys get ready
to play against the Raids on Monday Night football.
Speaker 3 (50:23):
Once again, Thanks Tommy.
Speaker 10 (50:26):
All right, thanks you guys a good week.
Speaker 1 (50:27):
Appreciate it. We got a lot of trades that are
gonna be coming up too. Coming up next, we're gonna
talk to our guy from the Texans, the Voice of
the Texans, which you can hear right here on sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone, Mark vandermir will break
it down. I know he's got a lot to say
about what happened on Saturday. We'll talk about it right
(50:49):
here on the morning kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone. Welcome back to the morning kickoff right
here on a Tuesday edition of the Morning Kickoff, and
we need to go down to That's right, we need
to go down to h Town because I know my guy,
Mark VanderMeer, the voice of the Houston Texans, where you
(51:10):
can hear all the games right here on sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred. The Zone has got a lot to
get off his chest. And let's start with CJ.
Speaker 3 (51:19):
Stroud.
Speaker 1 (51:19):
What is the latest after that gruesome head off the
turf hit that he took on Sunday.
Speaker 6 (51:29):
Morning. Guys, Yeah, he's in the protocol. So when you're
in the protocol, it's a big mystery. Right, You're going
through this process and you're evaluated, and you see the
first entryway is to pass certain tests just to make
it back out to some kind of practice, and then
you're evaluated after that practice. This is the way I
understand it, and they continue to ramp you up. Now,
(51:52):
the odds of him playing this is just my opinion.
The odds of him playing Sunday are not great.
Speaker 9 (51:58):
Because if you have a concussion.
Speaker 6 (52:00):
A bad one and I don't know how a degree
this is on Sunday, to make it back the following
Sunday for a quarterback is pretty tough, and Tamiko Ryan
said so on his Coaches show. I talked to him
about this because I asked him, Hey, no matter what,
you got to get ready right now with a game plan,
probably assuming Davis Mills is gonna play, and he said, yes,
(52:21):
you're absolutely right, because you cannot assume J would be ready.
In fact, it's unlikely that a quarterback plays the following week.
Speaker 9 (52:27):
So there's our answer for now.
Speaker 6 (52:29):
Unlikely. I don't think he used that word, but that's
the implication here, and I would say that Davis Mills
would probably start. I'm hoping CJ has a miraculous recovery.
He goes through whatever initial tests they have and it's boom,
green Light City and he's out there. But I think
we had embrace ourselves for the Davis Mills experience, which will.
Speaker 9 (52:49):
Not be the worst thing in the world, but.
Speaker 6 (52:51):
Of course you'd rather have CJ.
Speaker 3 (52:52):
Strap.
Speaker 2 (52:53):
We finally got Kirk Back, Like, how did Kirk look
at you in Is he a full go?
Speaker 3 (53:00):
Oh right now? Yeah?
Speaker 9 (53:02):
Kurt?
Speaker 6 (53:02):
So he's fine. Look, Kurt's a professional receiver. We've talked
about him.
Speaker 9 (53:06):
The unfortunate thing about Kirk Back and there's.
Speaker 6 (53:08):
Nothing unforced about Kirk back. Let me rephrase that they
had a really great performance against the forty nine ers
with an ensemble effort and multiple guys catching multiple passes
and Jal and Noel, Jayden Higgins and everybody pulled together and.
Speaker 3 (53:21):
Got the job done.
Speaker 6 (53:22):
Well, then you get.
Speaker 9 (53:23):
The big guns back, and I have no problems.
Speaker 6 (53:26):
The Nico Collins get ten targets. I mean, that's what
you want. You have to have that you get the
big guns back.
Speaker 9 (53:31):
But then Noel doesn't get a touch.
Speaker 6 (53:33):
You know, he got one handoff and he got that
dynamite putt return.
Speaker 9 (53:37):
I think the ball's got to be in Nole's hands
because Noel.
Speaker 6 (53:41):
I don't know if they think this, but it's possible
that Noel is better than Kirk, maybe not yet, but
that he will be. That he is a higher ceiling.
And I think Kirk Steiling is real nice. There's no
question you need him. But they got to get Noel
the football, and there are only so many footballs.
Speaker 9 (53:55):
To go around in a game, only so many opportunities, especially.
Speaker 6 (53:59):
When you're ten double on third down, which they were.
They were zero for seven on third down. After halftime,
you know, Mills came in looked pretty good for a
while and then Denver figured it out, threw a lot
of stuff at him. Texans didn't deal with it well,
and they couldn't score more than three in the second half.
Speaker 2 (54:15):
Well, Harge wrote it up about arch manning in a
quick game. Can't they play the quick game and try
to get the ball out of Davis mills hands.
Speaker 6 (54:24):
That's what they need to do, and I think that's
what they'll work on.
Speaker 9 (54:27):
I think Davis Mills with.
Speaker 6 (54:28):
A full cup of soup, you know, a full week
of practice here getting ready for Jacksonville, will be a
lot better than what we saw on Sunday. Mills has
twenty five starts in his career. He's played a lot
of football on a lot of subpar teams. And that's
being polite. Now he's seen Jacksonville. He's four to five
and one against the AFC South in his career. He's
beaten Jacksonville, He's beaten Tennessee. If he's got to play
(54:51):
next week, that's who they face. So I'm confident that
Davis Mills with the full compliment of practice can do well.
But they got to get them going here, and they
have him on the roster for a reason. This is
his time to shine. He's got to do it. The
team needs him. They cannot afford to lose these next
two coming up.
Speaker 2 (55:08):
It's hard to come off the bench and your quarterback
just got smashed and do what. It takes everybody a
lot of practice to do. One of the things that
we talked about at the first game of the season
was CJ. Stroud, you know, him gaining twelve pounds and
him feeling strong and talking about this is the best
(55:30):
he's ran since high school, and it's catching up to him.
Like when does he get the message that just because
you can run doesn't mean you should.
Speaker 6 (55:42):
Well, I think of that into he's just trying to
make a play, you know, and he slid. I think
the problem here is also he runs kind of funny sometimes,
but that's fine. He makes plays.
Speaker 9 (55:53):
But the slide, He's got to.
Speaker 6 (55:54):
Work on sliding. It sounds ridiculous. And I go back
to David Carr days with the Houston Texans. He needs
to learn to slide. You know. During cars years here,
he was the second leading rushing quarterback in the league
behind Michael Vick. And one time they actually kind of
has a publicity stunt. They brought Craig Biggio out to
practice to teach David how to slide, and it was
(56:15):
ha ha ha, but you gotta flyd well. CJ kind
of flies both meat first instead of a side of
the leg, you know, the way a baseball player needs
the slide and a baseball player, I don't know, I
haven't played baseball, but you kind of hip drop it,
you do it in a certain way.
Speaker 9 (56:30):
He really does.
Speaker 6 (56:31):
Literally need to learn to slide better because that time
he wasn't all the way down when he was tagged
by the dB and they picked up the flag. I
mean adding insult to injury. Literally they picked up the
freaking flag, which blew my mind at the time because.
Speaker 9 (56:45):
I still look at it and I say.
Speaker 6 (56:46):
Really, that guy couldn't hold up at all. This is
a quarterback we're talking about on his way down, almost
all the way down. But you're not going to go
ahead and penalize the Denver broncos it is what it is.
It would have been great to see that drive continue
with Mills because they needed all the ops they could
get and they didn't get enough. Well, they did get enough,
they just couldn't take advantage of that.
Speaker 3 (57:06):
I know.
Speaker 2 (57:07):
Marcus is going to be mad at this. But the
guy did not hit him with his helmet. He hid
him with his shoulder in the chicks and you hit
him while he was going down. Not to mention he
was a runner. He wasn't a quarterback at that point.
Speaker 6 (57:23):
Yeah, yep, but he's slide and giving himself up. I
don't know. We could pick it apart. And look, you're right,
they picked up the flag. We'll see if there's anything
extra this week once the league really gets a full
look at it. Officiating is weird right now because you
have this replay assist, which I think is awesome. It's
not like college where you have this congressional hearing every
time they review something. My gosh, can we make a
(57:44):
decision please. That in the NBA just drives me bonkers.
At least in the NFL, if somebody's upstairs the eye
in the sky and they're like, yeah, that's wrong, and
they'll fix it pretty quick. But this crew on Sunday,
Ron Torbert, he.
Speaker 9 (57:58):
Was just standing there listening half.
Speaker 6 (57:59):
The time because he was so much relying on replay assist. Now.
I want them to get it right, but it makes
me feel uneasy sometimes when that's the case.
Speaker 9 (58:07):
It is what it is with that too, because.
Speaker 6 (58:10):
Look, that's not why they lost the game. It wasn't
the officials that cost them the game. They cost themselves
the game. And they are where they are at three
and five.
Speaker 1 (58:17):
I'm talking to Mark Vandermire, excuse me, the voice of
the Houston Texans, and Marcus somebody who had who did
play baseball. I totally agree with you with the way
that CJ slides. It's it's kind of unorthodox and it
doesn't look comfortable. But one thing that I want to
continue to talk about is this defense.
Speaker 3 (58:37):
You know, they were in this ball game.
Speaker 1 (58:38):
If CJ plays, I firmly believe that the Texans win
the game. But this defense has done some things here
over the last couple of weeks that have been very,
very impressive.
Speaker 3 (58:48):
Are they trending in the right direction for you?
Speaker 9 (58:52):
Yeah, they are.
Speaker 6 (58:52):
It's unfortunate that on the last ride for Denver yet
bow Nick scrambling twenty five yards and that put them
in long field goal range already, and that was terrible.
Speaker 9 (59:02):
But and they really own that.
Speaker 6 (59:04):
They thought that they cost the Texans the game. And
I thought, look, the offense wasn't moving the ball at all.
Speaker 9 (59:09):
The second half.
Speaker 6 (59:10):
You guys did a great job. You got the ball
back time and time again. What more can you ask for.
Still number one in the league in points and.
Speaker 9 (59:16):
Yards, and I believe they are headed.
Speaker 6 (59:18):
In the right direction. They will keep the Texans in
every game this year. I watch other games and I think, geez,
the Texans defense is so much better than this one,
that one, the other one. So that will help them
a lot. But they got to get it together. They
had the ball in goal to go at the one, goal,
to go at the two in two different instances while
CJ was still in the game, couldn't score. And the
(59:38):
play calling. Look, I always say this about play calling.
Speaker 9 (59:41):
If it works, you're the genious.
Speaker 6 (59:43):
If not, welcome to the second guest arena right where
it's just going to be out there for you. They
could not punch it in, so I'm sure Nick Kelly
would call different plays right now to get it to go.
But they have some terrible situations this season where they're
right in point blank range and not convert and it's
cost them games.
Speaker 9 (01:00:02):
Literally, So they have to live with it.
Speaker 6 (01:00:05):
And improve on it. But you're running out of season now.
As I say that, you still have nine games left.
You got a lot of teams on your schedule that
if you play well in those games, you will be
in it.
Speaker 9 (01:00:15):
But you have to start.
Speaker 6 (01:00:16):
Playing well immediately on Sunday against Jacksonville.
Speaker 1 (01:00:19):
Yep, you got the Jacksonville Jaguars coming into town.
Speaker 3 (01:00:22):
Twelve o'clock kick.
Speaker 1 (01:00:23):
You can hear all the action right here with the
voice of the Houston Texans, Mark Vandermir. As always Mark,
we enjoy the conversation and hopefully next week we're talking
about a Texans victory.
Speaker 6 (01:00:38):
That would be great.
Speaker 9 (01:00:39):
Thanks a lot, guys, I appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (01:00:41):
No problem.
Speaker 1 (01:00:42):
There he is Mark vandermir the Voice of the Houston Texans. Yeah,
there's a lot to unpack in Davis Mills. He's got
to get it going because last week coming in he
wasn't ready. He wasn't ready. But this week he gets
a chance to get ready. Coming up next, get ready.
You got the world's strongest man bringing you his world's
(01:01:03):
strongest take right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
The Zone, good stuff by Mark Van der Meer, the
Voice of the Houston Texans, where you can hear all
the action right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
is on another place where you can hear all the
action and especially the world's strongest take is right here
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred. He's the world's strongest man.
(01:01:27):
In w w E Hall of Famer. He is the
one and only Mark Henry. Take it away, big fella. Alright,
what's up man?
Speaker 3 (01:01:34):
You know what time?
Speaker 2 (01:01:35):
And then it's time for the world's strongest take by
the world's strongest man.
Speaker 3 (01:01:42):
My gosh, back then they didn't know me, and now
I'm hot, they're all on me.
Speaker 2 (01:01:49):
Guys. I I don't want to be the guy that
said I told you so.
Speaker 3 (01:01:55):
But I told you, I told you? What did I
tell you?
Speaker 11 (01:02:01):
Didn't I tell you cause I told you? And when
did I tell you a long time ago? And what
did I say? What happened when I told you? Exactly
what just happened?
Speaker 2 (01:02:11):
Guys, John Moran, I've been screaming from the tallest tower
that the guy is just not a good guy. He's
he's done, he's had, he's been handed everything in his
life because he was a good basketball player. And we've
(01:02:34):
we've seen that the apple doom fall far from the tree.
Dad getting in the fights with fans, getting arrested, My son.
Speaker 3 (01:02:43):
Is the starting punt guard Memphis.
Speaker 2 (01:02:47):
Shut up, man, it's quick driving one hundred miles an
now when I'm sixty, Like there's like the apple doom
fall from the tree. This this is a guy that's
brandishing firearms, that's doing the gun shooting to players on
the bench.
Speaker 1 (01:03:04):
Like.
Speaker 2 (01:03:05):
He's had so many violations and penalties and finds that
he could support a small country hundreds and hundreds of
thousands of dollars in fines. And then last week the
Memphis Grizzlies played the Lakers, and he's been told several times, listen,
(01:03:31):
don't go out, don't party like we're at a back
to back. They were playing the Lakers. They played the Clippers,
and then they played the Lakers. He went out both nights,
party hardy in Los Angeles to the midnight hours, and
then you got to play a game. He failed miserably
(01:03:57):
against the Lakers. The coach got on him. He told
the coach, Harge, I don't know where they do this. Harge, Well,
don't play me?
Speaker 3 (01:04:07):
Then what don't play you? You're a star. I'm just
blown away. I think that the honeymoon is over.
Speaker 2 (01:04:21):
I think that the Memphis Grizzlies is just gonna have
to say, you know what our expectation was. This is
not only was he going to be the best player
possibly on our team, but he could have been the
best player in the league.
Speaker 3 (01:04:40):
He could have been the face of the league.
Speaker 2 (01:04:44):
And that is not what we got and he got
suspended for his actions. He came back, the questions were
asked yesterday after another loss, how did you feel about
and he said, you know, know what it is, what
it is. And they asked a bunch of questions that
(01:05:06):
kind of looked like they were inciting the ride, which
that's what the media does, and he said that to them,
he said, well go and ask them what they what
their opinion on it.
Speaker 3 (01:05:16):
They're the ones that find me, they're the ones that
suspended me. And he said, do you have a problem
with him? He said, if I had a problem with him,
I wouldn't talk to him no more.
Speaker 2 (01:05:26):
That's a great Oh yeah, that's just great. Hard My
thing is that I'm done with John Moran. I mean,
you do what you want to with him. What's their year?
That's my take?
Speaker 1 (01:05:37):
Well, traders, I think he yeah, of course you're gonna
try to trade them. Yeah, I've been off the John Moran.
He got the best selling shoes that are out there
right now though so so the shoes are nice, But yeah,
Jah has been off my radar when it comes to
(01:05:58):
basketball for quite some time now because of the simple fact.
Speaker 3 (01:06:01):
That he is.
Speaker 1 (01:06:04):
He's not finding the solutions to what his problems are.
You know, you you you talked to when we had
Chris dell Conti on last week. You were talking about
you a problem solver, But why do we get this done? Yeah,
find a solution for John Morant. The solution for John
Morant is that he needs to humble himself. You know
(01:06:28):
you talked about the apple not falling far from the tree. Well,
job wasn't that good of a player coming out. He
was on the same team with Zion Williamson and nobody
really knew who he was. He grew, he blew up
and now he's very successful at what he does. But
(01:06:49):
his off the off the court antics are what is
hurting him so badly. And Marcus Tooda when we were
talking about it during the break, he was going to
be the face of the league. They were pushing him.
It was full send on John Moran and we were
all in.
Speaker 3 (01:07:07):
The kids were.
Speaker 1 (01:07:07):
All in kids were like, yes, Joe, he's one of us.
Now they're looking at him and they're like, golly, I
don't know, but can y'all get me these shoes? Because
they these them shoes are live. I will say that
got the hotter shoe in the game. But I'm with you.
I mean, I've jumped off that for a while. I
(01:07:29):
just think that him not doing self reflection, not taking
self accountability.
Speaker 3 (01:07:36):
And it may not be you.
Speaker 1 (01:07:37):
He may be doing nothing wrong, but the image, the image.
Speaker 3 (01:07:43):
You know, I don't see nothing wrong with him going out.
Nobody shouldn't. Man, I did it, we all did.
Speaker 2 (01:07:50):
But on a back to back night, and you know
you're gonna play against Luca and you're gonna play against Caruso,
Like you need.
Speaker 3 (01:08:00):
To get your rest, oh, man said Luca and Caruso.
Speaker 2 (01:08:04):
Not Carusoe ready when you you playing Reeds. And then
the night before you got James Harden. James Harden is
no walking the park. Man, you gotta go to bed Bro.
Like there's a lot of money invested.
Speaker 1 (01:08:22):
In you, and everybody else is invested in you, and
you're costing people money.
Speaker 2 (01:08:30):
Like man Like, I just felt like his maturity should
be further along at this point, and I'm I'm just
done with him. I defended him for a long time, remember,
and I'm my take is there is Look, you're on
your own, bro. I'm not defending you no more until
you step up and become a man and start.
Speaker 1 (01:08:52):
Treating your team like your they're your teammates. I'm done,
all right, man, I'm telling you right now. You got
to believe it and don't want shoes. Keep your shoes.
We're gonna close out the show and send you to
Dan Patrick Texas Basketball Big Time matchup tonight.
Speaker 3 (01:09:15):
That's right, folks.
Speaker 1 (01:09:16):
Basketball season is here and it's still football season right
here on the morning kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone.
Speaker 3 (01:09:24):
What a great, great show.
Speaker 1 (01:09:25):
We've had today Joe Cook of Inside Texas, Tommy Yarsh
of Dallas Cowboys dot Com, and Mark vandermir the Voice
of the Houston Texans, which you can hear all Houston
Texans games right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred

(01:09:46):
in this afternoon for the Craig wat Show two to
five Craig Way, Cam Parker and Jake Herman as Craig,
who is the hardest working man in sports, did the
women's game last night, a one twenty three to fifty
one victory.
Speaker 3 (01:10:02):
Hopped on a plane this morning so.
Speaker 1 (01:10:04):
He can get to Charlotte to call Texas men's basketball
as they take on the Duke Blue Devils tonight seven
to forty five.
Speaker 3 (01:10:15):
Tip.
Speaker 1 (01:10:15):
You can listen to all the action on ninety eight
point one KVET, but always free on the iHeart Radio app.
A lot going on today, Mark, NFL trade deadline is
hot and heavy to Dallas. Cowboys already made a trade.
They got Logan Wilson, veteran linebacker from the Cincinnati Bengals.
(01:10:38):
Reported by Ian Rappaport, the Cowboys sent a seventh round
pick back to the Bengals for the trade. He's been
hurt a little bit, so he hadn't had a lot
of time on the field, but now he'll be back
over with eber Flues. The Cowboys need help at the
linebacker position. I'm sure there's going to be more moves,
(01:11:00):
But is it enough?
Speaker 3 (01:11:01):
Mark?
Speaker 1 (01:11:01):
Is it truly enough for the Dallas Cowboys to make
moves like that right now? When your team didn't do
well last night obviously and it's gonna be tough for
you moving forward.
Speaker 3 (01:11:15):
I just don't see it.
Speaker 1 (01:11:16):
I don't see why or how this becomes a great
move for the Cowboys at this point, with.
Speaker 2 (01:11:24):
No practice, A guy that's actually not been playing that
much in Cincinnati as of like to come in and
to side get side by side with another guy that
hadn't played all season. I think there's gonna be a
learning curve. Like I mean, they are better players than
(01:11:48):
what the guys that are playing right now, but they
haven't got any reps. And I just don't feel like
it's going to be that effective. I mean, if it is,
it'd be a big surprise to me. Yeah, well it's
gonna be. It's gonna be interesting to see what they
do moving forward. It is at that point where things
are looking a little bit different. But we'll see what
(01:12:10):
the Cowboys end up doing. Because they have not been
taking advantage of situations, especially in these last few games.
Speaker 3 (01:12:18):
I just don't want them to use.
Speaker 2 (01:12:20):
The there are two new acquired first round picks.
Speaker 3 (01:12:25):
They're not they're not. There's if the cow look, look
I'm scared. Look if they do that.
Speaker 1 (01:12:34):
You you want to hear a meltdown as a kid
say he crashed, you will hear a crash out because
that's all we've been talking about. That's all we've been
talking about. How the Cowboys are gonna go out there
and they're gonna make some moves, and you know, I'm
all in, I'm all in, I'm going for it.
Speaker 3 (01:12:52):
You're not going anywhere.
Speaker 2 (01:12:54):
There's like three defensive ends that are on their board. Oh,
they're trying to get that. That and nobody wants to
un part with those guys for less than a second
round or first round pick. And if they give up
one of those first round picks, it's so valuable. And
next year's draft where you could possibly move up and
(01:13:15):
and and get.
Speaker 3 (01:13:16):
Some very valuable pieces.
Speaker 2 (01:13:18):
I'm I'm you're gonna You're gonna crash out, and I'm
gonna go through what team I'm going to be following
for the rest of my life.
Speaker 3 (01:13:28):
Move up.
Speaker 12 (01:13:28):
They could actually move down and get more depth, because
that's what they need.
Speaker 3 (01:13:32):
Some death.
Speaker 1 (01:13:34):
Man, I'm not even messing with that. They better not
do nothing but keep them picks.
Speaker 3 (01:13:41):
Wherever those.
Speaker 2 (01:13:43):
If it's a nerdy first pick, you need to stay
right there, stay right there and get the best thing
available they have so many holes.
Speaker 3 (01:13:52):
They like, so now you.
Speaker 2 (01:13:53):
Got two first rounds, you got two second rounds, and
your third fourth.
Speaker 3 (01:13:59):
Well, they gave away their seventh.
Speaker 2 (01:14:01):
Round, but we we don't even need They don't need
a seven round pick. They don't need a sixth round pick.
But like they need the field bodies and the guys
that they have. Now they should be fire selling people.
They should they really should be fire selling guys, digs anybody. Yeah,
nobody's nobody on that defense other than Clark, I think,
(01:14:26):
and and as a rakkup.
Speaker 3 (01:14:29):
Everybody else expendable, everybody clown.
Speaker 1 (01:14:32):
Everybody got room to go, not grow go, you got
room to go.
Speaker 3 (01:14:38):
Because this is getting to the points of marble.
Speaker 12 (01:14:40):
I didn't know this segment was turning to the Martin
Lawrence segment. I'm gonna get to step in, get to
