Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's a new hit list on iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
I'm your host, Angelina with the One, the Only Haldy.
Speaker 3 (00:06):
Hey, thanks for having me.
Speaker 1 (00:08):
Thank you so much for taking this time. I'm so
happier back.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
I know it's been like three years, but it feels
like a decade.
Speaker 4 (00:15):
But let me tell you, it feels like that to
me too. I can't even I can't even believe it.
I'm like, I'll tell you what it is, not like
riding a bike like r WHOA Like I'm trying to
I just I never thought in my life that in
my twenties I would take this level of a hiatus,
And like, you know, it's definitely been sort of crazy
coming back into everything for sure.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
Well it came back slinging. I was like, no, I
don't have me crying first thing in the morning.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
Oh I know, I said that.
Speaker 4 (00:44):
I was like, I don't know if we could do
this at seven AMLA time. I feel like that's kind
of cruel to do to people.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Let it be through it, let's hop right into it.
Lucky out now everywhere. I mean, I just feel like
this is the most vulnerable and really raw and honest.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
I've heard you.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
How are you feeling now that not just your song,
but I feel like your story is out now to
the world.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
Yeah, I mean, it's definitely been. It's definitely been a
big day.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
It's been a big day.
Speaker 4 (01:08):
But this is what I set out to do, was
to you know, share this through my art. And that's
you know, it's part of the reason why this, this
part of my story is kind of is coming sort
of delayed from when it was actually happening, is because
when all this was going down, I was just like,
I don't know how to talk about this if it's
not through you know, music, because I didn't really know
(01:31):
how to understand.
Speaker 3 (01:32):
It with you know, through through music.
Speaker 4 (01:35):
And so I kind of made a commitment to myself
that I was like, when I tell this story, I'm
going to do it my way, and I'm going to
do it through you know, something something creative and something
people can can connect to. And it's been you know,
that part has been really really successful, and I'm really
proud of it. But I know that I've got, you know,
a two year head start on some of these emotions,
(01:58):
and I'm watching people kind of catch up in real time,
and it's, uh, yeah, it's been. It's been really it's
been really beautiful and overwhelming and scary, but I'm really grateful,
and uh, I hate and I wanted to start here
because I felt like this context is really really important,
you know, to the rest of the music that's to come.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
Yeah, And I you know, I feel like, if you know,
if you go back to your old records and your
old albums, you've always been very like you could tell
you released like your therapy through your music. But I
love that you took the time to almost heal in
order to tell this story correctly.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
Yeah, I felt like I owed that to myself, you know.
Speaker 4 (02:37):
I think that I definitely have been really forthcoming and
sort of open in the past few years in the
sense of like I'm processing things as they're happening. I'm
and I'm processing them in front of the world and
with the world, et cetera.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
And so with this I.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
Did have a little bit of guilt in the beginning
because I felt like I was keeping this huge secret
from my fans, you know, and I had for so long.
I had been like, hey, you always know exactly what's
going on with me, and that was sort of this
like unspoken promise that I had made and then this
thing was going on, and like, you know, to be
completely honest with you, I feel like a lot of
(03:14):
people were like, hey, we feel like you're not telling
us something, or they felt like I was like a
little distant, or you know, I was a little bit
more private than usual, and I so badly wanted to
be like, it's not you, it's.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
I promise you're gonna know.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
I have to tell you the right.
Speaker 4 (03:30):
Way, you know, And that's made this even more even
more cathartic, I think, right, And it's it's crazy because,
like exactly, it's hard to juggle that when that's always
been your brand, to be vulnerable.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
But like, at the end of the day, a lot like.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
Not just you, but like artis in general, do not
owe anyone anything, you know what I mean when it
comes to personal stuff and doing with those kind of battles.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
But we obviously appreciate you being so raw on this record.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
It's really crazy to me because I just remember being
a little girl and like two thousand watching the premiere
of Lucky from Britney's face, like I was a Britney
Stan and like now being able to see you come
out in this way and watching the role premiere and
watching it all on full and it's it's.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
Kind of like a full circle moment for your fans
as well.
Speaker 4 (04:11):
Yeah, I just really wanted to do right by her,
you know, like I really wanted to maintain the original
essence of the record, and I wanted to maintain like
that feeling that I had the first time I heard it,
the first time I connected with it. If it's It
was definitely like a out of the box choice because
this is the only song where I'm sampling on the
entire album, because everything had been coming.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
Just so much from me.
Speaker 4 (04:34):
But I just had to do because you know, I
have this memory of hearing this song and really empathizing
with Brittany. You know, I'm five or six years old,
and I'm for the first time in my life, I'm
thinking about a pop star outside of the context of
how they're being presented to me, and I'm like, Wow,
(04:55):
she's a person, and she's going through things, and maybe
her life isn't perfect, you know, and she was going
through so much more than we even knew, you know
that we know now, and so I wanted this song
to kind of have I wanted it to be true
to that memory. Of hearing the song when I was
when I was younger, and also what I know now.
(05:16):
I kind of wanted both of those points of views,
like to feel feel represented, and I didn't want to
change anything too much. You know, obviously I wrote all
new verses and stuff like that, but it was kind
of already a perfect record, and I just wanted to
build on the experience and build on the story that
it was telling.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
That's so amazing.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
I just think it's so cool that we can relate
to that too. You know, it's like full circle moment
for both the artists and the fan. I have to
know what was her reaction, Like, obviously, I know you
had to go through some kind of process of getting
this cleared, Like how did that go about?
Speaker 4 (05:47):
I mean, she was so awesome and she was, you know, supportive,
and I was really terrified that, you know that I
didn't know how it was going to go, and I
was just really hoping that she was going to be,
you know, at the very least okay with it. I
was hoping she was excited about it, and she was,
which was which was great, But it was, uh, it was,
if I'm gonna be honest with you, it was insane,
(06:10):
like I, this is like the biggest pop star of
my life and like you knew I existed, you know,
So like having getting the chance to kind of like
interact with her in this capacity and to also you know,
incorporate her into my work in this way, it was
it was it was really really just mind blowing. And uh,
(06:32):
I think that's so much of this experience for me
has been an exploration of a fate kind of because
I was asking myself a lot when I first got sick,
because I think when when you deal with like I
think that one of the first questions that comes to
mind is sort of like could I have done anything
differently for this to not happen to me? Or was
this always just kind of written in the stars? And
(06:55):
this team can be said about my career as a musician.
You know, where I was kind of looking at all
these happening is these really intense happenings of my life,
whether positive or negative, and being like, is this always
how it is? You know, or or you know in
another timeline, in another universe, do these things not happen?
Speaker 3 (07:16):
And you know, I started applying that to you know,
my career.
Speaker 4 (07:19):
As a musician and it just one of the things
that came to mind was like, you know, if I
didn't sit in that room and I didn't listen to Brittany,
and I didn't practice the dances, and you know what,
I would I be here. And I think the answer
is maybe no, which is why it's so incredible to
have this come full circle in that way.
Speaker 1 (07:38):
Oh my god, we just got goosebumps.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
Now.
Speaker 1 (07:40):
That's so powerful. And I, you know, I'm a big
believer in that too.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
And I think it's amazing that you were vulnerable and like,
you know, sharing your health battles and everything that you've
been going through.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
Because already I've seen comments role in a people who.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
Are dealing with theirs, you know, and like feeling so
happy that they could relate to you know, their favorite
artists or just you know, use your song for to
help them get through what they're going through.
Speaker 4 (08:02):
I you know, it really means a lot to me
when I see you know, those messages as much as
it like really breaks my heart because I don't like
to see anybody, you know, going through something really difficult.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
But I guess because I did feel I did feel
kind of.
Speaker 4 (08:15):
Alone while it was happening, and it was sort of
by my own design, because like I said, I was
kind of keeping everything close to the chest. But you know,
now get into just connect with other humans, and you
know that's the kind of the whole point of that
song is like, you know, you never know what someone
else is going through exactly, and everybody kind of connecting
(08:37):
over that same that same message is uh, it means
it means.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
That something, something right is happening, you know.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
I hope no, that's.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
That's really the power of music. So I really apology
for coming out about that. And I just love the
music video. I mean, obviously I'm over here crying, like
there's so many layers to it, but I thought you
paid perfect commage and just you know, seeing Ashley with
all the posters and it's just so amazing how many details,
Like I know, you're really adamant about your visuals.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
You know, it's a ton of the process of the
music video.
Speaker 3 (09:08):
Oh yeah, I mean it's loaded.
Speaker 4 (09:09):
There's definitely a lot of like Easter eggs and hints
and and I think mostly for me, I just like
I really wanted to do something that felt authentically Y
two K and not kind of like the sort of
you know, cyberified contemporary reimagining of it.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
Which I also love, by the way, But.
Speaker 4 (09:28):
For this, I really wanted to feel like a memory,
like it was a nostalgic like you know. I showed
the video to a couple of friends before it came out,
and one of them said something that really just like
checked that box in my heart for me. And they said,
I feel like I'm watching a story that I remember,
like about you know, a pop star or an artist
(09:49):
from when I was younger. But I also I'm keenly
aware of the fact that this isn't a memory. This
is real and this is happening to you. But it
just feels like my brain when I watch it just goes,
oh yeah, I remember that.
Speaker 3 (10:01):
And I was like, that's exactly, you know what I
wanted it to feel like, I think, and I just
wanted to I wanted to be able to.
Speaker 4 (10:14):
You know, it's I'm gonna I'm in a weird situation
with this album cycle, to be honest with you, because
I'm talking about something that is so heavy. I'm doing
it with the energy of a person who really wants
to have fun and enjoy my life. And you know,
I'm so grateful to be here and to be beginning
to do this again. So there's a lot of sort
(10:34):
of contradiction, like conflicting emotions, and I hope that the
video really you know, captured how conflicting those those emotions are.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
I love that because I feel like it's really a
testament to your healing process as well. And I yeah,
saying what your friends said, like that's exactly how I
felt watching the music video.
Speaker 1 (10:53):
Like obviously hamas to.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
The Queen Brittany, but like I saw some like peak
references in there and sell these things.
Speaker 1 (10:59):
Are just like really brought me back totally, No, totally.
Speaker 4 (11:02):
It was like, you know, I was pulling references from
from everywhere and the whole thing kind of does. It
was meant to feel sort of like like my fever
dream distorted memory of the early two thousands, because you
know how like our memories are kind of you're kind
of unreliable sometimes and like everything together like I wanted
(11:24):
it to kind of feel I feel like that exactly.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
Well, I am so happier back. We're running lucky on
the show full like in rotation. I'm happy that you're back.
I missed your music, but you know who else, I
missed my favorite Twitter account, haul.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
Of the A line.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
I know, I know, I've been listen.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
I went. I saw how often I get.
Speaker 4 (11:46):
First of all, thank you for supporting the record, and
thank you for supporting the song because it's been it's
been so long, and I'm so you know, happy to
be back and it's nice to be back to you know,
it's nice to come back to music and to feel
like welcome and well received, and it just it definitely
(12:10):
is like a huge confidence boost that I think that
I really needed after taking that that break. So I'm
so so grateful and Halsey and One, I was like,
do I bring it back for the Olympics, Like what
do I do?
Speaker 2 (12:21):
You know?
Speaker 3 (12:23):
The now not just Halsey and One.
Speaker 4 (12:24):
It's like, I'm gonna give my expert commentary on you know,
javelin or something like I don't know.
Speaker 1 (12:31):
Basketball.
Speaker 3 (12:32):
I don't know how much I know about I mean,
I could probably do gymnastics.
Speaker 4 (12:35):
Maybe I'm not very fast, so I don't think I
could do anything anything else.
Speaker 2 (12:44):
Like U NBA content in there, you know, because I
love to say I'm a Warriors fan, so I hate
that you're a Lakers fan.
Speaker 1 (12:50):
But you're just so good. I have to follow account.
It's my favorite account.
Speaker 4 (12:53):
Listen I made I made Lucky with with a producer
named Michael Uzi who's a massive Warriors fan, and he
would just get every day he would come in wearing
like these like Golden State shirts and like I would
just be looking at him like, yo, are you trying
to fight? Like do you want to get into a fight?
Speaker 1 (13:12):
Right?
Speaker 4 (13:13):
Like we made a lot of the record, you know,
during the season too, so it was like, uh, it
was definitely a there's a friendly rivalry there.
Speaker 1 (13:22):
But listen, I totally respect it.
Speaker 3 (13:23):
I mean, the Warriors are a great They're a great team.
I love good basketball.
Speaker 1 (13:28):
I love good you know what.
Speaker 3 (13:30):
I mean, And just thinking so so so fun.
Speaker 4 (13:33):
And I also feel like everyone is deeply surprised to
know that about me because it's giving nerd you know,
me as a person, but like I'm a nerd about basketball.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
No, you really are, Like I remember a first all
the cows like wow, holes, he really does her stuff,
Like I'm here for it. I'm crying there also being
a big Warriors fan.
Speaker 3 (13:52):
But I mean some of the players would be angry
with me, like I would not go to a game.
Speaker 1 (13:58):
No, well, I'm just I'm just happy you're back. And
I mean, really it's honor for me to talk to
you about this record before I let you go. What
is net? What can fans expect next from Halsey?
Speaker 4 (14:09):
Ooh, the next song is just completely different than this one,
which is awesome and one of my favorite things to do.
I feel like all my albums are full of such contradictions,
and I really love just getting to an experiment and uh,
you know, it's always like expect the unexpected and and
you know, I would say that there's like a pretty
(14:31):
a pretty nice balance of the music to come between
like sad girl things and also like.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
You know, like screw this, like I'm not going to
let this get.
Speaker 4 (14:47):
Me down, and I'm you know, I want to I'm
want to talk my talk and and whatever else. So
you know, there's definitely like a little balance of that there.
I think that this is my favorite album I've ever made,
and I say that every time, and I mean every time,
because I feel like I just keep making records that
I like better than the last one, which is all
you can really hope for as an artist is to
(15:07):
continue to grow and to continue to you know, make
yourself proud, and uh, I think that I hope that
this is, you know, one of the pieces of work
that I'm really really remembered for. So I just I
can't wait to get the rest of it out and
get the whole story out.
Speaker 2 (15:26):
I'm so excited because that's exactly around that in life.
So I'm also really hoping I can sing these songs
alive and cry in concert with you.
Speaker 3 (15:34):
Oh.
Speaker 1 (15:35):
I'm ready. I'm ready for it.
Speaker 3 (15:36):
I'm ready for it.
Speaker 4 (15:37):
We got September and then maybe there's like, you know,
some more I don't know I'm getting. I'm going to
get the look that I'm giving stuff away, so I'm
gonna stop now. But I'm okay, okay, like the Lord,
a little little preview in September, and then we're gonna,
you know, we're gonna hit the road.
Speaker 2 (15:54):
So okay, awesome. Well, it was so great talking with you, Halsey,
And next time your services, so you have.
Speaker 1 (15:58):
To come to the station.
Speaker 4 (16:00):
Absolutely, I will be there and I will bring you
a Lakers jersey. Ah.
Speaker 1 (16:05):
All right, so good talking with you. Have a good one,
and we're gonna like you like crazy. Thank you. Thanks
