Speaker 1 (00:00):
Very excited today to have on the Patent Danny podcast
mister Class of nineteen eighty nine, mister Clint Black, Yay, Hello, Yeah,
I just have to tell you I am just beyond
tickled that I'm getting to talk to you today. Huge fan.
Cannot wait to go to your big show which is
coming up at the Waterfront this coming Friday. Thank you
(00:23):
so much for just taking a little bit out of
I know what has to be a very busy time
for you to chat a little bit and get people
so excited about your show Friday.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Thank you, Thanks for having me on.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
Yeah, it's a big, I mean a huge deal for us,
and I just wanted to flash back a little bit
because it's just incredible to me the class of eighty
nine people that you really only have to say the
first name Travis Garth Alan, You've got Mary Chapin Carpenter, Okay,
I gotta say Mary Chapin. That's like two names. But
(00:59):
when you say Clint, you know that's Clint Black. And
what an amazing class of eighty nine that was.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
Yeah, it was a spectacular time. You know, it was
explosive and moory now, but it was amazing.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
Yeah, I just cannot believe it's been you know, you
say eighty nine, Okay, yeah, eighty nine. Then you say
thirty five years and you go, wait a minute, where
did where did the time go? Where did all of
this time go?
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Yeah, my calculator doesn't show it.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
Well, I bet it does show all of the singles.
Let's see. What does it say? Nothing but the tail
lights gave you twenty two number one singles. We're talking
a gentleman who has sold over twenty million records and billions.
That's with a B billions of streams. Clint black It's
(01:59):
amazing to me.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
It's amazing to me. I'm just so lucky to still
be doing this, to being able to tour with a
great band, to play for great audiences. We have a
great crew to be able to do this. We still
play about eighty cities a year. And I know how
lucky I am. I know that it's lasted this long.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
And you are literally you're going everywhere. So thank you
again for taking some time out to talk to us.
But this this tour, was it back on the Blacktop?
You know? Do I have out right?
Speaker 2 (02:40):
Yep?
Speaker 1 (02:41):
Okay, I'm nervous, but you've literally this tour is so
great because you're just gonna play. I mean literally, you
could probably do this two nights here because with all
of the songs that you have, I don't know how
you're going to get to everything.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
We can't. No, it's a wonderfully impossible task. And you know,
it's just something we think about all the time, what
to leave in and what to leave out. Like Bob
Seeker said, that's a good point.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
Yeah, absolutely. But you know, music is i'm sure your
number one passion, but that's not the only thing that
you've done throughout your career. There's been some acting, you've done,
some interviewing almost like podcast like things that have been
out for people to catch. You've really got a great
(03:37):
connection with a lot of country artists obviously. And then
I have to I just have to mention because I
can't believe you were on the show that is absolutely
I'm obsessed with it, which was the Masked Singer with
your wife Lisa.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
Yeah. Yeah, well you were the first duet and they
want to us together in the Egg and it was
really challenging. It's hard to it's hard to find a
song that's impactful and competitive. You know, we had to
choose songs, and then lawyers had to get them approved.
And that whole process is hard enough for one singer,
(04:17):
but then when you make it two singers and they're married,
and so the song has to ring true and it
has to work in our key, you know, And all
of these things were really challenging. And then you stick
us in an egg, and we have to move this
egg around on stage, and we're in these costumes that
(04:39):
fog up so you can't see out of the eyeballs
in the masks. It was harder than I could have imagined,
just logistically getting in there, getting on stage, suddenly moving
into place, the heart rate goes up because you know
you're almost falling down trying to move that egg around,
and then they go okay, and then the music starts
(05:01):
and suddenly you know you're singing difficult songs.
Speaker 1 (05:05):
Are Yeah, No, I was impressed. I mean I had
no idea about all that, all the stuff you're talking about.
I mean, it did look difficult, and I knew there
had to be a lot of challenges because the costumes
are outrageous, and both of you inside of an egg
was first off, very precious. Secondly, it had to be difficult,
and you chose really hard songs.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
Yeah, it was. It was the hardest part. Well, you know,
physically hard to do it, but figuring out what we
were going to sing was much more difficult. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (05:43):
All I can say is I'm really glad you guys
have a very deep, loving connection because that could have
been could have ended a lot of marriages there.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
We were lucky. That was in twenty twenty. So we
had been basically home down like everyone else, and we
do really really well with that. You know, just make
me stay home and make us stay home together, and
we're just happy as plans and then but we did
like the idea of getting out and doing something, and so,
(06:18):
you know, while everything was pretty well locked down, we
went out to California and did that show, and of
course there were a lot of restraints because of COVID
do so the whole thing. I can't imagine how much
easier it is to do now without all that to
worry about.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
Well, besides the tour, talk to me about some of
the other things you may be up to. At this point.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
We're going into CMA Week next year and going to
the BMI Dinner Awards, where they're gonna honor me. My
manager has been very secretive about it, but I know
that I'm getting the Icon Awards. Oh but the way
he's sort of set me up for this, it's supposed
to be. It's already a great honor, but what they're
(07:05):
gonna do with the evening for me is supposed to
be you know, somebody's gonna.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
Cry, Oh yeah, me, I will.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
It's supposed to be. It's supposed to be just an
amazing night for the oddicome recipient. So that's something I'm
really excited about now. And then we have some really
great things that will be announcing after the first of
the year that we've been working on. And it's going
to be a busy year for me in twenty twenty six.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
Oh my gosh, it sounds like it. Well, the best
of luck with you on this tour. We cannot wait.
Waterfront Convention Center. You can get your tickets there. Check
Clint's website to find out. Like, if you can't make
it Friday, you've got to get to one of the
other cities and see this because you will be missing
a lot thirty five plus years of absolutely fantastic hits
(07:58):
and I'm going to be there I'll probably be you know,
if you If I'm not in the front row, i'll
feel like I'm in the front row because I'm going
to be screaming and singing along the entire night.
Speaker 2 (08:07):
Clint, I'm counting on it.
Speaker 1 (08:12):
Well, thanks again for spending some time this afternoon. I
know you're very busy, so let you go, but I
can't wait to see Friday night.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
I'll see you then. Thank you.
