(00:00):
Welcome to Saturday Stein Line with MarkStein on ninety seven one, the freak
home to Dallas Mavericks Games, hostedby legendary NBA reporter and publisher of his
substract The Steinline. Here's Mark Stein. Friends, hellow once again, and

(00:23):
welcome to the Saturday Steinline, presentedby our good friends at Panini Trading Cards
and Collectibles. On another not sobreezy Saturday. We are completing our first
month of shows and with that aname change. You know, when I

(00:49):
went to Howard Stern Broadcasting School, they said, you know, you don't
need to heed what the program directorsays. But I should have listened to
our program director, Dominic Zaccanini, who told me you really should put the
Steinline in the name of the show. For some reason, I did not

(01:11):
heed that advice. But I wasinformed that even though we're a month in,
it's not too late to change. And the pod Father, Bill Simmons,
he always says, you should havethe host name, should be in
the in the in the name ofthe show somewhere if possible. So we

(01:32):
have rectified that what was once SaturdaySports World is now Saturday Steinline. And
the good news is it doesn't changeanything in terms of where you guys go
to get the podcast, whether it'sApple Pods, Spotify, Google, iHeart,
wherever you go for your pods, the feed hasn't changed. It's right

(01:53):
there. We've got a great showlined up for you on this the final
Saturday, July. Grant Hill, the Basketball Hall of Famer and now the
managing director essentially the GM of USABasketball. He will be our guest in
the second segment. In the thirdsegment, I'm gonna take text We're gonna

(02:15):
talk Luca don Chich, We're gonnatalk all things going on with the MAVs.
Hit me please on the Steinline textline two one four seven eight seven
one nine seven one two one fourseven eight seven one nine seven one.
Throw your texts at me, throwyour questions at me, and I will

(02:40):
get to some of those in thethird segment. Also a couple couple items
here. Again, as we've we'vesaid the last couple shows. If you
want to sponsor the Steinline text line, we've got an opening if that interests
you. If you if you wouldlike to attach your business to this fledgling
enterprise, email me at Mark Steinall one word Mark Stein at substack dot

(03:05):
com. But more importantly, todaywe have the first contest giveaway in show
history. You know, Panini isa national trading card and collectibles giant based
right here in the DFW area, but long before they had a presence in
the United States. You know,my whole life, they have been synonymous

(03:29):
with international soccer, soccer stickers, soccer albums. If you're if you're a
kid growing up in Europe, youyou definitely have Panini stickers have been a
part of your life, especially ifyou're a has been like me, an
old man. So the Women's WorldCup is going on right now, and

(03:50):
Panini has a beautiful Women's World Cupalbum, and we're given one of those
away today as well as two boxesfull of stickers. If you have a
young fan at home who is into the Women's World Cup. If you
are our thirteenth Texter today, numberthirteen in honor of the legend Alex Morgan,

(04:15):
US women's national team legend Alex Morgan. Yes, number thirteen also Steve
Nash's number. But this is aboutthe Women's World Cup. It's it's their
time for the US national team. Two games into their World Cup ride,
seeking a third consecutive championship. Justplayed Netherlands, their opponent in the previous
final in the group stages. Thecompetition gets tougher every quadrennial for the for

(04:42):
the US women's national team, butthey are going for a three peat.
And like I said, if youhave if you have a youngster at home,
and maybe maybe maybe as an adult, you're you're still into the stickers
like me, two boxes and analbum will go to our thirteenth Texter two
one, four, seven, eightseven and one nine seven one. All

(05:03):
right, let's get to business now. I'm not gonna lie to you.
Guys. They heat broke me lastweek and after this show, after doing
this show live in studio, Ibasically made made a bee line straight for
the airport. I had to Ihad to escape. It was only five

(05:26):
days, but I sneaked away toManhattan Beach, where it's roughly thirty degrees
cooler. And I'm really not abeach goer I spent I grew up mostly
in southern California, but man,I don't really partake in any of the

(05:46):
water sports, never learn to serve, boogieboard anything, but just being in
that air it was rejuvenating and ofcourse, there was no way I was
gonna not get back in time tohost this show. But like I said,
I just I just needed a quickbreak. I'm guessing you guys can

(06:08):
identify with that. But look, the NBA season is a long way away.
It starts a little bit later thisseason. Training camp for twenty eight
of the thirty teams does not startuntil October. Third. Media Day is
October second. MAVs fans, yourweight is a couple days shorter. The

(06:29):
MAVs and Minnesota have two exhibition gamesin Abu Dhabi. As a result of
that, they get to those twoteams get to start a little bit ahead
of the pack. I want tosay Media day is September twenty ninth.
First practices will be September thirtieth,if I have that right, So a
couple days before the rest of theNBA. But that's still it's a long

(06:53):
it's a long way down the road. So I am here today to just
give you a little bit of home. I can't offer any respite from the
heat it is. It's gonna betriple digits every day for the foreseeable forever.
That's my official freak weather update.I haven't counted exactly how many.
But every day that I've looked ahead, it's it's got three digits on it.

(07:16):
But you know what, August isan underrated month. That's really the
pitch that I'm making here today.August there will be more basketball activity in
August than we normally get, andwe need it. It's gonna help us
through. So just just I justwant to kind of run through these items,

(07:38):
just to make sure you guys areaware. August eleventh and twelfth,
roughly a month sooner than normal, and so you know, less than two
weeks away. Hall of Fame inductionsin Springfield, Massachusetts. I will be

(07:58):
there. Freak franchise players ben InSkin will be there. A certain Dirk
Werner Nvitsky is getting inducted in oneof the starriest Hall of Fame classes you
could ever wish to see. Severalof his contemporaries are also part of this

(08:20):
class. Pau gasol, Tony Parker. Do we say his buddy are they
buddies now? His buddy Dwayne Wade? Still not ready to go there?
People? They are, they're friendlynow, but it is yeah, I'm
not gonna lie still struggling. That'stwo not gonna lie for this first segment.

(08:41):
I'm still struggling to process that, but they are apparently pals now.
Dwayne Wade part of this Hall ofFame class, Greg Popovich, Becky Hammond.
It is going to be an absolutefestival and we will be covering it
in a huge, huge way hereat ninety seven one the Freak. I

(09:05):
don't want to give away all thesurprises, but we have lots lots lots
of Hall of Fame coverage coming yourway. I would, I would almost
I would. I'm gonna take theliberty of saying that we are We're gonna
We're gonna be known as the official, the official station of basketball Hall of
Fame coverage. That's how much wewe've got en route. And I can't

(09:30):
wait. I mean that seriously, all you know that class is so good.
It's the reason it's it's typically inSeptember, but it's in August this
year. One of the reasons DurkNavitsky is an ambassador for PHIBA and he
will be heading shortly after Hall ofFame abductions. He's got to get to
the World Cup. And that's reasonnumber two why I am so psyched for

(09:54):
August, a month that normally doesnot give us tons to look forward to
on the hardwood front. But FIBAWorld Cup thirty two teams love my International
Basketball ninety two games on all mannerof ESPN platform, so there's gonna be
a lot of hoops to watch.Luca Docich, of course, leading Slovenia.

(10:18):
Will get to more of what's goingon with Luca in the third segment.
But Luca this week joining up withhis national team colleagues. They won
EuroBasket twenty seventeenth, finished and agonizingfourth, just out of the medals at
the last Olympics in Tokyo. InterestingWorld Cup field. You've got the United

(10:43):
States with a solid team, butyou know not it's an all new group.
We're going to discuss that with GrantHill here in the next segment.
All new. You know, there'sthere's some All Stars on the team.
Jalen Brunson is on the team,a near miss All Star last season with
the nick they've got. They've gottwelve very good players, but it's a
completely new group with no international experience. Canada will be very strong. The

(11:07):
French will be strong, even thoughthey will not have Victor Wemban Yama.
Australia as always should have a verygood team, although they will not have
Ben Simmons. Really the Canada thisis the best Canada team, probably top
to bottom talent wise, that they'veever had. And it sounds like Jamal
Murray is playing as well as Shaygiljis Alexander so they you know, even

(11:31):
even though there will be absentees forCanada, no no Andrew Wiggins, no
Benedict Matterin, no Shade and Sharpe, no Brandon Clark still recovering from an
injury that he suffered with Memphis.Um, you know, Canada is going
to have a really good team.So I cannot wait for the World Cup.
There there are there, you know, there are a lot of notable

(11:54):
absentees. And look, Serbia willnot be as good as they normally are.
No no, no Nicola Yokich,no Milsteadsich, and no Vasily Mitchich,
the new thunder guard who's been oneof the best players in Europe over
the last few years. So Serbiawill not be as strong as they normally
are, but still a very goodfield and a lot to watch. And

(12:18):
again I am I am an internationalbasketball addict, and it is it is
a wonderful tonic when you're in lateAugust and the NBA season still feels a
zillion years away and you get towatch top level basketball. So that's that's
always a bonus. And then thethird reason we get the NBA schedule soon.

(12:41):
Last year we got the full NBAschedule on August seventeen, So my
instinct says that we will. Youknow, I have no official word on
that. I don't know exactly whatthe league's plans are in terms of schedule
release, but just my instinct wouldbe that it's it's probably going to be

(13:03):
in that August seventeenth range again andafter Hall of Fame inductions makes a good
bit of sense. Again, theseare purely my musings, my guestimates.
I don't know, but I willtry to get a firm word on exactly
when, exactly when the schedule leaseis coming, all right, as promised

(13:30):
in the next segment, A longchat with Grant Hill,
