(00:00):
Thanks everyone for sticking with us onthe Saturday Steinline here on ninety seven one
the Freak. All right, friends, it's time, as promised, our
special guest this week. In onemore week, you will have to address
him as a Hall of Famer onall first references. But he joins us

(00:21):
now from a top secret location cannotbe revealed, far far away from his
spiritual home in Dallas. Is thisaudience ready for a good ten twelve minutes
with almost a Hall of Famer?Girk Werner the Vitski. Wow, you

(00:43):
are actually on the show. Thisis really happening, and this is big,
This is big. I'm excited forthe new show. I can't wait
to listen in. But like yousaid, I'm still overseas and I'm working
my way home so I can getready for spring feet excited. I mean
it's crazy Jersey retirement International jersey retirementstatue unveiling. I think there was a

(01:07):
street named after you in there somewhere. And now, like you said,
all you have to say in basketballis the word springfield. Everyone in the
game knows what that means. Buthas it sunk in yet? Are you
ready for this? I mean asready as I can get. I guess
I'm super excited, obviously a littleanxious already. I think it's gonna be

(01:30):
a super cool, fun couple days. We have family and friends coming from
all over the world. So yeah, I'm I'm already a little nervous.
Obviously I'm not a great speaker andholding a big speech there and then just
the whole hooplah there, and youknow, the limelight is not really my
thing, so it's it's gonna bea little bit uncomfortable at times, but

(01:53):
I'm gonna I'm gonna just try toreally enjoy it and enjoy it my family
and my kids are now old enoughto really understand what's happening, and so
I'm looking forward to a great time. And and like you said, all
this stuff, all the honorings andstreet naming and all that, people are
now like we got to celebrate youagain, Like when when is this over?

(02:16):
This retirement tour? And I wouldsay this to me, the Hall
of Fame is like the absolute tipof the iceberg, and it's the coolest
thing. It's an honor to bethere. And sort of I think things
will sort of for me at leastslow down after that. But It's been
literally one thing after the next, and I'm extremely proud of all these things.

(02:38):
So you're gonna have Steve Nash andJason Kidd there with you on stage.
And the way presenters work for theHall of Fame for people who don't
know you have to be a Hallof Famer to be eligible as a presenter.
You knew those guys were going tosay yes when you ask them,
But what was it like to actually, you know, are you nervous asking
them? Hey, guys, willyou come there with me? Because it's

(03:00):
also weird for the presenters. Theydon't get to say anything. They just
they just sit on the seabool. They just sit there. Yeah, you
know, you know me, Iwasn't. I wasn't doing it all formal.
I wasn't, Hey, Steven,do you mind that? So I
just kind of threw it out.And when we talked about all of fame
and and sand which a kid,you know, obviously they're they're not only

(03:22):
teammates of mind, they're really reallygood friends and friends for life, and
so you know, it was sortof informal. I kind of threw it
out, Hey, I'd love foryou guy, or for love, would
love for you to be up therewith me, and and they both were
kind of no brainer obviously, anduh and so they're they're looking forward to
it, and I'm looking forward toseeing them. I'm seeing their families and

(03:42):
uh and and just spending incredible threefour days up and uh up in Springfield.
You know, I always say thiswhen people ask me about the early
days, and you know, youand Steve both had a rough first year
in Dallas, which was a longlong time go, but having been there,
I'm certainly not gonna forget it whenyou think back. I mean,

(04:03):
how crazy does it sound to youthat there were two mv two future MVPs
and two future all of famers onthat lockout nineteen ninety nine MAVs team when
you and Steve first were teammates.Man, it's it's almost twenty five years

(04:24):
ago. Yeah, crazy, crazyhow the time has flown by, and
also crazy how that worked out.You know, do you know me,
I'm always a little negative. I'mshy, you know, it's my German
in me, and so I thatfirst year, I just I wasn't sure
am I gonna make it? Ihad to outscreeping, And of course there
were games you were there. Therewere games where I didn't play at all.

(04:46):
I was I was frustrated. Iwas you know, I was basically
questioning myself, did I make theright decisions here and to come over,
or should I have stayed in Europe? Should I have gone to Call?
And I guess all that's normal, and things don't really um, you know,
work out well or or work outas planned. And and then all

(05:06):
we really did was Steve and Iwould say, Hey, all we can
do is is is you know, work hard and and we'll we'll we'll go
from there. That's all you cando is control which you can control.
We used to go back to thegym every night, to the old Landry
Center there we didn't even have ourown practice facility, uh, and just
you know, played horse, playedone on one, played shooting games,

(05:29):
played played with other guys three onthree, and just you know, just
trying to work hard as hard aswe can and get exercessions in. And
so we you know, it wasn'treally if if it didn't work out,
then people can't say, well, you didn't work hard enough. So that's
that's what we both didn't want. And so we just really busted our tails
and trying to get better and tryingto make it and then you know,

(05:51):
I always mentioned and you were therethe end of my first year when we
were finally out of the playoffs. We were never really in it. I
think were like four or five gamesout of the playoffs at all times.
But then when we were finally eliminated, Nellie came up to me and say,
hey, listen, I'll start youagain. We have whatever ten games
left. Why don't you just youknow, get adjusted to the game and

(06:14):
have some fun and really love playing. And that stretched to me was I
was one of the biggest turnarounds inmy career. And Steve obviously started playing
well a little earlier, but forme, that was that was a big
turnaround. I got to I gotto be comfortable. I had one game
I had like twenty eight and thatkind of showed me, hey, if
you actually work hard and you havethe skills to succeed, and obviously in

(06:39):
Nellie will put you in positions withhis with his mismashed style, that that
even my body I was a littleunderdeveloped, I can be in a position
to play well and and contribute. And so that that meant that meant the
world to me. That thought thoselast ten games on my first year that
really changed everything. The one andOnly Dirt Nvitsky us here on the Saturday

(07:00):
Steinline on ninety seven one The Freakpresented by Panini America, And you guys
should know this show has now movedinto its second month. Dirk volunteered to
be the first guests in show history, our very first show. But I
know I wanted to wait. Iwanted to wait to do this right before

(07:21):
his induction into the Hall of Fame. And we are doing this now one
week before that induction with I'm I'myou know, I can't say I'm as
excited as you, but I'm prettydamn excited too. I just I can't
wait. I can't wait to seeall because it's not just you going in,
but everyone. You're going in withtwo Like, just what do you

(07:43):
think it's gonna be like to be? You know, you're with all your
rivals, Pow, Tony, Pop, your buddy Wade, like to go
in with all these guys too atthe same time, I mean, unbelievable
at times. In all there therewere times where all where all of us
didn't really get along and great butI think that's that's part of part of

(08:05):
competing at the highest level and partof you know, trying to win and
at all costs. And so therewere times where it didn't speak with Power
Mush, there were times where itdidn't be with Dwayne. Uh, Tony
and I were always pretty okay. But it's just that it just funny how
that works out that now all ofa sudden, we're all together in this
class. And UH, we talkedabout it a little bit when we got

(08:28):
UM introduced in UH in the finalfour in Houston, when they announced us.
We spend a couple of good daystogether there and UH, it's just
funny how that worked. And wecompeted against Power and Tony since we were
I don't know, twenty nineteen, twenty years old on national teams and UM,
so it was super cool to bepart of their crew. And you

(08:50):
know how much I inspect Pop.I mean to me, he was He's
probably one of the goals of coachingand the respect that and all the stuff
they's done for me and my lastgame and I mean, I can I
can go on minutes about the guys. So UM, super super humble to
be part of this, Uh,this amazing class, and like I said,

(09:11):
we're gonna have some fun. We'regoing there. I think we have
some We're gonna golfing one day withthe whole class, and uh so it's
it's gonna be a fun, funcouple of days and I'm gonna I'm gonna
enjoy it. Yeah, I gottaask you this one because I've got MAVs
fans asking me all the time, like are we are we supposed to know?
Are you and Dwayne Wade now buddies? Are you guys? Friends?

(09:33):
Is that how we are supposed torefer to you? You two? I
think friends. I mean, obviouslyfriends reach out to each other all the
time, they talk all the time. I wouldn't say we're friends. I
think there's a mutual sense of obviouslyrespect for each other's career, and obviously
we're cordial. Um. We weresitting actually and you sitting at that one

(09:54):
dinner. We were sitting at thesame table. Our family sat together there
and so there's just no there's nobad blood obviously anymore people have we all
moved on, Things were said onboth sides are done that neither neither side
light. But you know that's likeI said earlier, that's part of competition

(10:16):
at the highest level, it's there. To me, I'm still old school.
There were really no friends at theat the highest level. I understand
nowadays everything is a little different inthe league, but at the you know
where when I came in, therewere really no friendships at the highest level,
and and so that's that's where thatcomes from. So are we friends.
No, we don't text each other, but I think where there's a

(10:39):
lot of respect there and we're bothhappy to go in the Hall of Fame
together. I'm gonna have to doa poll among the audience, how many
how many listeners have moved on?That'll be a good That'll be something good
there out there now. Actually youdid that. It was in the recent
past, a year a year ago, maybe more, maybe a little bit
less, but you did a podcastwith Tony Cruse and Felix Cruce's brother,

(11:03):
the both professional soccer players. Obviouslyeveryone knows Tony still playing for Real Madrid,
and you talked about you were reallycandid with that. I'm guessing in
your own language and with fellow athletes, maybe it was easier. And you
you talked about how you said somethingto the effect that the last couple of
years you were questioning were they worthit? Because you know, you've you've

(11:26):
had some some foot issues since playing, and I think you said something along
lines of you could probably move bettertoday had you retired earlier, but with
a little bit more time. Howdo you feel about that part? And
how you know because you stayed twentyone years, but that gave you that
also gave you an incredible record thatmay never be broken. Twenty one years
with one franchise. How do youlook at that now? Uh? Yeah,

(11:50):
sort of the same. You know. I think it's normal to go
back and ask to self questions andwhen you that's part of reflecting if you're
done with some then in life, and then you kind of look back and
reflect a little bit, and it'snormal to ask questions, Hey, what
if? What if? If ifI would have squit two years earlier?
With that, I've made a difference. Honestly, it doesn't really matter.

(12:11):
I'm I'm super super proud of ofhaving played twenty one years or for one
franchise. Nobody can ever take thataway from me. And of course the
last years were a little tough.I mean, in my last season,
I could barely. I didn't practiceanymore. I missed the first thirty games.
It took forever from a somewhat playdecent basketball, So those times were

(12:33):
not not necessarily fun um. Butyou know, like I said, it's
it's part of my career now andI'm proud of it. Played twenty one
years at an older age and tryingto keep up with, you know,
guys that were half half your age, and so I'm proud that I made
it this long. And of coursehere and there, I have some some

(12:56):
ankle issues, but I think that'sjust you know, even if I would
have quit after nineteen, I wouldhave still had some issues. It's just
part of part of sports. Ourlast few moments here on ninety seven one
the Freak with the one and onlyDirk Navitsky, one week away from his
Hall of Fame induction. I askedTyson Chandler this a couple of weeks ago,

(13:16):
when we had Tyson on the showactually having a championship ring. Is
it you do you look at it? Do you just keep it away and
try not to think about it?Or how much on how much on a
daily basis can you feel, yes, I'm a champion because obviously in your
case, I think you know youyou heard for so long when you hadn't

(13:39):
won, I mean you were justreminded about it constantly, constantly, So
how much on a daily basis canyou feel, Yes, I actually have
that ring, So I don't.I don't look at the ring a lot.
Only when I really have new guestsor whatever and they come over and
they want to see it, Butit's usually in a safe place, so
I don't see it myself much.Maybe every couple of weeks, every couple

(14:01):
of months. But I am remindedof the championship every day. I mean
I have I have a photo athome in my little man cave where obviously
hoisted trophy and the whole team isbehind me, and I have the banner
somewhere around that, the remake ofthe banner with all the names on it.
So I am reminded of it daily, which is of course amazing,

(14:26):
and it puts me in a smileon muf face every day. But the
ring, I would say, onlyevery couple of weeks, every couple of
months, I'll look at it.So actually a matter of fact, I
haven't seen it now and in monthsnow, since we traveled a bunch,
so when I get home, Imight I might have to lay eyes on
it before I come to Springfield.Incredibly happy for you that you have that

(14:48):
ring, Incredibly happy for you forwhat awaits this coming week, huge week
for you. You've got a restaurantopening at DFW and then we all make
our way Springfield for this incredible ceremony. Still can't believe it's happening, but
huge, hugely grateful to catch upwith you today and have you on the

(15:11):
show, and thank you honestly forI mean, there's no thank you as
I can say. They're sufficient forthe the twenty five years that you've let
me pastor you. I actually beenthinking about it that September is going to
be twenty five years since I camethe work word for the first time,
which is just what happened to us. Man. Yeah, no, thank
you, thank you for coming alongon this journey. And you know,

(15:35):
at the beginning, we're kind ofyou know, we both started to talk
soccer and we had a great bondthere and so I really appreciate you being
part of this journey and it's beenit's been so much fun. So thanks
thanks to you as well. Forbeing part Dirk Nivitski. Everyone the future
Hall of Famer, and future meansonly one week. A week from today

(16:00):
he will be eternally referred to asthe Hall of Famer Jurkdovitsky. Stay tuned.
