(00:01):
Good morning, good afternoon, goodevening. I'm Blake and I am back
with the Community Health Forum presented byCamden Clark Medical Center and their Health and
Wellness Center. I have Brittany backyet again. How are you doing today,
Brittany? I know we've had apretty decent conversation before recording, but
how are you doing today? Yeah? I'm doing pretty good. You said
that you were working at the poolthis morning. How did how did that
(00:24):
go? I was, well,it was nice and quiet. Thursday mornings
usually are pretty quiet, but it'svery hot in there, so I'm not
used to sitting in the eighty degreeroom for three hours, but it was
okay. I mean, I meanyou can go outside and sit out in
the eighty degree weather. I mean, is it is humid in there as
it is outside or is it kindof different? Yeah, it's pretty humid
(00:46):
in there. Yeah, there's nobreeze rights right. Yeah, I'm I'm
not a fan of the weather rightat the moment, just because again,
the humidity is so awful and Ifeel like if I walk outside at any
point that I myself have gone swimmingand I'm just done with the local weather.
And now it's raining buckets on topof buckets outside and I'm not a
(01:08):
fan of it. I'm just overit, over it. But what are
we talking about today? So?I was wanting to talk about our group
fitness program that we have at theHealth and Wellness Center. All right,
So what is your group fitness like? What is all of that entail over
there at the Health and Wellness Center? So we have several different group fitness
(01:33):
classes ranging from the pool to thingson lands such as yoga, cardio,
strength training, with several different instructorsthat come in and teach for us.
Okay, And do you have tobe a member to be a part of
these groups? No, not necessarily. Our classes are free for members.
(01:53):
But you know, if you justwant to drop in for the day,
you know, you can just doa day pass and do it that way
as well. Okay, what isI'm just gonna kind of get a biased
answer here, what is one ofyour favorite group fitness classes? Like?
Is it the pool stuff? Isthe yoga stuff? Like? What is
your favorite one over there? Rightnow? I'm putting you on the spot
there. Well, I like somany different ones. I mean, the
(02:16):
pool classes are definitely probably one ofthe most popular ones. We have,
okay, but then there are afew land classes that are really popular.
Yoga is always a good one,and then we have a couple of cardio
classes that are pretty popular too, okay, And is there multiple different pool
fitness classes? Yes, what arethose classes exactly? So we have quite
(02:37):
a few in the morning that aremore for arthritic classes, so there are
a lot lower impact. You know, they're just a lot easier on the
body, especially like if you're avery beginner, that's probably a good place
to start. And then we dohave a little bit more intense water classes
(02:57):
that are either right after that orin the evening that people like to come
to. Gotcha, Now, whatdoes it typically cost to do something like
a fitness group class or the likethe pool classes that you just mentioned.
What does it cost to do thatif you're not a member? So our
day passes are ten dollars, andyou know, if you buy a day
(03:17):
pass early in the morning, youcan use that all throughout the day.
You can come and go as youplease that day, so you can do
as many classes that day as you'dlike. Or we do have a group
fitness like class pass, so ifyou buy one of those, you can
do five classes for twenty bucks, which is actually like a pretty good deal.
(03:38):
Gotcha. Yeah, And I thinkthat's a good thing that you can
kind of come and go as youplease throughout that day pass. I think
that's a good incentive. On average, how long did these How did the
classes last? Like how long didthey go? Normally? So they usually
range between We have a couple thatare thirty minutes, but most are forty
five minutes to an hour. Okay, is it just for is it forty
(04:01):
five minutes just because of you getmore out of it? Or is there
a reasoning for it being forty fiveminutes? Is it? Could it be
longer? Could it be shorter?Like? What determined that forty five minute
time frame? Necessarily? I meansometimes it's a couple of different things,
like just scheduling with our studio, and then also some classes like if you
were to do it for more thanforty five minutes, you would really be
(04:24):
tired. So because the class thatI actually teach, which is pump our
X, you know it's like weightliftingtoning, forty five minutes seems to be
a really good time. We weredoing it for an hour before and since
I switched it to forty five minutesfor scheduling purposes. Everybody seems to like
that a lot better. They're like, yeah, this works better. So
(04:45):
I'm like, okay, let's stickwith forty five minutes. So pump our
X. We have we talked aboutthat before. I don't think so why
don't we Why don't we highlight thepump our X thing. Since it's your
class, let's talk about that fora minute. I want I want to
get the details on this, allright. So pump our X. We've
had it on and off at theHealth and Wellness Center for a while.
(05:06):
Prior to me teaching, it wasanother instructor that she no longer works with
us anymore, but it was avery popular class. And so it's,
you know, mainly focused on likeweightlifting and toning. So we use like
the mini barbells and like dumbbells, and then I've started incorporating like resistance band
(05:28):
stuff and like body weight strength training. Hmm, sounds fun. We can
get you can get Jeff in thereto do some weightlifting with you and get
him in there to do some uhsome pump our X. I think that
would be entertaining to have Jeff inthere. For sure. He's a he's
a comedian at at its finest, and I think he would make it fun.
Oh yeah, So get you bothin there teaching the class at the
same time. That'd be fun. Now, typically one of these classes take
(05:54):
place like I know, you saidyou had some in the morning and you
said they go out through all day, correct, Yeah, kind of.
So we do have a couple ofclasses that start really early in the morning,
like six am. We have acouple of water classes on Monday and
Wednesday, and then we actually dohave some early morning yoga classes on those
(06:14):
days as well right after. Butthe majority of our classes happen between like
nine and eleven in the mornings andthen in the evenings starting at five until
about seven seven thirty. Gotcha. So so they're time like they're they're manageable
with your time, so you cankind of plan with what class you want
to be in and then schedule accordinglyto those classes. Right, So that's
good. I know. Louis hasbeen on here previously in prior episodes talking
(06:40):
about the medical model and how withthe Health and wael Center being a medically
based facility, how did these fitnessclasses play a part into that medical model.
So for group fitness it plays moreinto like the preventative medicine portion.
Okay, so you know, well, group fitness and then also just you
(07:03):
know, working out in general playsinto that. So you know, if
you were coming in you know,as a healthy individual to start and you're
still working out and everything, that'sgoing to prevent you from developing you know,
diabetes and things like that, orfrom them getting worse. So this
works as more of a preventative measurefrom those things happening or you know,
(07:27):
potentially getting worse. Gotcha now, kind of tying into that question into another
question, I know that you guysdo a lot of like prior surgery like
rehab kind of stuff and then likestrengthening before surgery kind of things. Can
these do these classes also help kindof with that, Like can you integrate
those classes into like say, likea post surgery type thing or is that
(07:53):
kind of like a no no,oh, yeah, yeah for sure.
Honestly, one of the best onesfor that is yoga because yoga focuses on
a lot of stretching and a lotof times you know, flexibility or inflexibility.
Can you know, create all thesejoint issues and problems and pain.
Actually, one of our members thatI'm pretty close with, she's been having
(08:13):
a lot of back issues with degenerativedegenerative disc disease and stuff, and she
started doing yoga and she feels somuch better and it's only been a few
weeks. How common do you seedegenerative disc disease like here? I mean,
because I know, I mean, you may have one case of it
that you just mentioned a second ago, But how how frequent is something like
(08:33):
that have you seen? I mean, it's fairly common because it kind of
ties in with like arthritis and stufflike that. But just as you get
older, those discs are gonna squishdown even further and stuff like that.
So yeah, I mean, it'syou're going to see it right now.
And I've I've never been a partof yoga. I've never done yoga.
(08:56):
I know my mom's boyfriend does hisyoga. He does like his like meditating
type type of stuff. Other thanphysically, it would be beneficial like yoga's
beneficial like mentally and stuff like thattoo, if I'm not mistaken, right,
Yeah, absolutely, yeah, Imean I don't I've necessarily not gotten
behind the yoga thing just because Imean, I don't want to go and
(09:18):
do stretching and doing what is it? The the what the different posts they
call it's something. There was aguy on TikTok that does a bunch of
yoga stuff and he calls different positionslike a different name or whatever, and
it's just like, yeah, I'mnot buying into that, Like it's just
awkward. But where can you findthe scheduling for these classes? Like,
(09:39):
I'm assuming you can go on thewebsite to find it. If not,
Yeah, yeah, we always keepit posted on the website and usually at
the beginning of the month, youknow, we'll switch it to the current
schedule, but we also post iton our Facebook page and I believe or
Instagram as well, and if youare a member, we do email it
(10:01):
out to all the members too atthe beginning of the month. Gotcha.
Yeah, definitely follow the Facebook page. I've actually checked in on that and
I've seen the Facebook page. Andyou guys are very very on top of
making sure that you guys know whenceclasses are you especially, I've noticed that
you put in You're like, hey, this is when this class is going,
this is when I'm teaching this class, this is one of this classes
going on. You guys are veryvery on top of making sure the schedules
(10:24):
out there and very up to date. I will give you guys that.
Now with the classes aside, dothey ever how frequently do they change necessarily?
Like is there like a timeframe ofwhen they can change, or is
there like do they stay kind ofconsistent throughout the entire year. So it
(10:45):
kind of goes both ways. Youknow, if we have classes that are
really popular and doing really well, you know we keep those the same.
Honestly, our entire water class programthat we have in the pool, those
rarely ever change. We may addone here or there, but we don't
ever change them. The ones thatdo change a little bit are land classes,
(11:09):
because you know, something becomes popularfor a while and then you know,
loses interest, so then we justkind of change it around. Gotcha,
Now, I'm gonna pick your brainagain. It's gonna get an opinionated
question with an opinion opinionated answer. If there's one class that you have seen
(11:30):
at the Health and Wellness Center thatmay have like kind of gone away and
come back or has gone away andnever come back, what is one class
that you would want to come backand stick around, like it has there
been a class that you have seenthat you would want to come back necessarily,
m because I've been given all thechanges and maybe things have kind of
(11:50):
like you dropped classes or picked upclasses or whatever. I'm just thinking that
there's maybe if a class that youwere like, oh, this is really
a good idea or this is reallyfun, but then it kind of went
away just because of the popularity,Wasn't there necessarily Yeah, But I'm trying
to see if there is a classyou would you would want to bring back.
Personally I would want to bring back. Well, we kind of cycle
(12:11):
them through, so we do bringthem back frequently after we haven't had them
for a while. And Pump wasone of them because you know, Carla
did a great job with it andthen she left, but and now it's
really picking back up actually, solike that was one. But one that
we're really itching to get is aTRX class put the suspension training. So
(12:37):
we have all of it, butwe're just waiting to get it set up
in the studio because you know,it could be interesting. It's not set
up correctly, so we want tomake sure it's set up safely. So
kind of kind of explain what suspensiontraining is because I've heard of it,
but I've never actually like seen itor like done it or anything like that.
I'm kind of curious as to whatfully goes into sus mentioned training type
(13:01):
stuff. So the TRX is thatwe're gonna be getting here soon hopefully it
will connect to like the top ofthe wall, and then it comes down
to two different handles. So basicallylike you're using body weight, like you're
pulling yourself up to it or pushingyourself away, you know, doing like
a lot of like upper body stuff. You can do some lower body and
(13:22):
core with it as well with thehandles. Okay, cool, Actually that
actually sounds really it sounds it soundsinteresting because I mean, I know I've
seen tiktoks with people using like theresistance bands and everything, and yeah,
them doing like having the what isit the curl, like the pull a
bar or something like that, andthey're doing it with their knees or stuff
like that. I always get thatthought in my head of yeah, I'm
(13:43):
gonna snap myself in the face, and I don't particularly want to have a
giant bruise across my face doing it, so that would be something interesting to
be a part of. I'm curiousto see if that comes to the schedule.
Hopefully that does. Is there anysort of and I know I mentioned
this probably to recording and get everythingstarted. Is there anything like important coming
(14:05):
up here soon? Is there anythinglike is there a particular class you want
to highlight coming like starting soon,or is going on right at the moment
that you want to highlight, orjust anything in general event wise that you've
guys got going on, Because Iknow school had just started here recently for
a lot of local kids, soI know a lot of the probably the
schooling stuff or like the kids orientedstuff as might be on the downturn right
(14:26):
now. But what do you guysgot going on right now that you would
like to highlight? Well, askfor like big events. I don't think
there's really anything coming up here soon, since we just had the healthfare at
the mall that was a big thingthat we were working on. But something
(14:46):
that I would like to highlight iswe did bring back our Saturday classes because
we had them there for a whileand then we stopped. But we have
a newer instructor that I just hiredearlier this summer and she teaches like a
spin class on Saturday mornings. Soand what's a spin class again? Exactly?
So spin is like the the cyclingthe bikes. Gotcha? Gotcha?
(15:11):
Okay, yeah, I was.I was. I thought that was what
it was. But I wanted tomake sure it not sound dumb when I
asked when I asked that question,so I wanted to make sure my thought
process was right. And you mentionedthe healthfare of this past week? How
did how did the healthfare go?I I heard about it, but I
didn't really like look too far intoit. How did that go? Overall?
It went really well. You know, this was like the first one
(15:33):
we had at the mall since COVID, so you know, it wasn't as
big as before, but you know, it'll definitely grow for next year.
But overall it went pretty well. What do you guys necessarily do for like
at the healthfare? Like, howdoes the setup and how what's the goal
of the healthfare? Exactly? Sothere are a lot of different vendors or
a lot of different departments from thehospital come and set up a table in
(15:56):
a booth and just you know, give out more information about different things.
We had table set up, youknow, just for the Health and Wellness
Center to give out more information andyou know, get people interested. And
then we actually had a couple ofour classes there so people could come and
you know, kind of do likea demo of the classes to see what
(16:18):
we have. And also we hadStacy Howser come and teach some Temple Challenge
classes there too. Sweet. Yeah, sweet, And I cannot believe I
missed that. I cannot believe.Well, I mean, I've got my
weekends and my weeks have gone completelyhaywire since like even just the summer starting,
but now with school starting and everything, everything's kind of gotten even worse
(16:42):
now. So my ability to getout and do anything, or my motivation
to go out and do anything isvery minimal right at the moment. So
I'm trying my hardest to get backout to do things and to not be
stuck in the house all the time. Yeah, but is there anything else
that you want to touch on?Anything else you want to talk about?
Is there anything in particular do youwant, Like, I mean, you
(17:03):
can give a Louis a shout ifyou want to. I mean, I
know, I know he's very keenon hearing these, so give him a
shout out if you want. Isde Yeah, so are I guess we
can talk about the group fitness alittle bit more because there are a lot
of benefits to these classes. Sowhat I really liked, you know,
(17:25):
whenever I first started really working out, I guess and coming to the gym,
I went to the classes because Iwasn't exactly sure what to do on
my own. And with a class, you know, you've got an instructor.
They tell you exactly what to do. You don't have to think about
what to do. You just followthem. And what's great is usually they
always know the proper way of doingthings, like they'll tell you the right
(17:48):
form and you know, even breathingbecause that is really important when it comes
to exercise as well. And soit's almost like having a personal trainer,
you know, and just having theinstruction is really great. And not only
that, but a lot of peoplereally become friends and like it creates a
really good community as well. Becausethere's one of our classes, you know,
(18:14):
it's been a group of ladies foroh my gosh, thirteen fifteen years,
like the same core group of ladies, and I think on Fridays they
go to Panera and like get coffeeand stuff together. And and even with
my class, there's a few ofus that are like really interested in like
whole food plant based eating. Andwe actually found a class like a local
(18:36):
church here on certain Thursdays, youknow, they have like a nutrition class,
and so we all go there togetherand stuff, and it's it's really
nice because you just keep each othermotivated. Yeah, And I think that's
a good thing with just group groupclasses and just group like groups of people
working out together in general. AndI mean it's almost kind of like a
team base. It's like like ateam working together in a sense kind of.
Yeah, you kind of bounce offof each other or you motivate each
(19:00):
other, and you're not as awkwardgoing. It's less awkward going as a
group and being a part of agroup than it is by yourself with just
one other person or like a trainerdoing things on your own. I think
that's kind of a positive to comeout of that. And I mean,
and like you said, having friendsthat are able to go do other things
like go to Prenaire and grab somecoffee, or to go to Whole Foods
(19:23):
and get plant based I mean I'venever gotten into the plant based stuff.
I mean, I don't this isnot my thing. I don't know.
I mean, I've got to bedifferent lifestyle, that's for sure. I
have a pizza that I had fromyesterday literally sitting at my desk ready to
that's calling my name, that I'mgoing to devour the minute I get over
(19:45):
there. So I am not Ienjoy I enjoy every aspect of food,
but probably in the worst way,I guess. I mean, probably not
in a very healthy way. Butbut hey, it's it's up to you.
It's your personal preference. I mean, yeah, but is there anything
(20:07):
else you want to cover? Isthere anything else that I'm Is there something
that I miss because I guarantee there'sprobably something that I missed that you would
want to want to cover. Idon't think so. I think that was
pretty much pretty much. Ye,all right, So where exactly can they
find you? Again? One moretime? So? The Health of My
Illness Center is located on Birch Street, which is behind Michael's like up on
(20:30):
the hill, gotcha? Yeah,So if you go down where Gabs and
everything is across the parking lot,the old Crafts two thousand building and then
what is that Dollar General or DollarTree or something like Dollar Tree, go
in between the two buildings and goup the hill boom right there. If
you miss it, you probably lookthe other way. So you'd be surprised
how many people will say, like, I never knew this was here,
(20:51):
right, Yeah, I mean fromand it's been there for thirty years,
from like the traffic circle and likewhere like Bob Evans and stuff is.
I would necessarily like if I wouldn'tif I wasn't looking that direction, I
probably wouldn't notice. But going downin there behind Bob Evans and going down
into Gabs, there's no way youcan miss it. Yeah. So I
mean because there's what l Ranchiro orsomething like that kind of close to there
(21:12):
too, Yeah, so you canyou It's literally you can see it right
across the parking lot, so it'shard to miss. But where is a
set? What is a phone numberthat they can also call in to ask
questions as well? Off top ofyour head? Sorry, phone number is
three oh four four two four twothree four eight, gotcha? Gotcha?
And if there's nothing else you wantto cover, I just want to give
(21:32):
everybody please go check this out,go talk to Britney and let her kind
of give you a rundown of allthe classes. She's really good and she's
really knowledgeable with everything she does. Also give Louie a shout out. Tell
him his hair cut looks nice today. I love I love Louie to death,
and he's a he's a good dude. Make sure you give Jeff a
high five and tell him that he'sdoing a good job. Everybody does a
(21:52):
really good job over there. Everybody'svery approachable. So please please go check
it out if you have, evenif you just want to go out with
just to find something to do,you just want to find something to new,
go check the classes out. Thepool's really nice, and I will
tell you it's really well maintained. It's very well maintained. We actually just
did our annual cleaning, so it'sreally clean and new water, new chemicals
(22:15):
and everything. So that's good.See. And I'm glad again. I'm
glad that you guys can actually likesay that with confidence because I know a
lot of places don't necessarily do annualcleanings. I guess, or I'm just
glad that it's clean. I'm justvery glad that it's clean because the one.
I'm just glad that everybody has someform of a cleaning to product or
a towel that just constantly goes downand wipes everything down and make sure everything's
(22:37):
clean. You guys take time outof the week to specifically just clean.
Yeah, and which is today?Which when I get back? Yep,
yep, yep. I just hadto make sure. I just had to
remind you that you had to goback and clean. Not my favorite part
of the day. Not to killyour mood or anything, but yeah,
but if if there's nothing else wewant to cover, we're going to close
this episode out and we will hopefullysee you next the next episode hopefully.
(23:00):
If not, we'll probably have somebodyelse that is down there come in.
But I greatly appreciate you coming in. I appreciate everything you guys do down
there. You guys do a wonderfuljob. Keep up the good work,
make sure everybody gets back to ahealthy state of living, and continue just
continue to do what you guys do. Thank you, thanks for having me.
Ye And that was the WPU CommunityHealth Forum presented by WPU Camden Clark
(23:26):
Medical Center. I want to thankeverybody for listening, and we will see
you guys next time.
