Speaker 1 (00:00):
Don't have a good time.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
This mama got drama back for another episode. Your hostess,
Lady Ray here with you, and I'm excited. I'm always
excited to bring on uh, not only a new mommy,
but a mommy had that has so many other roles,
right because you're just stepping into this new role. But
you're into fashion. We've seen you in music. We've been
rocking with you for years on television. We gotta make
(00:23):
some noise. Eh, give it up for Shanelle West Coast
joining us today.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
Eh, how are you?
Speaker 1 (00:30):
I'm good. I'm good. I mean, mommy brain is working today,
so we good. How about you?
Speaker 4 (00:34):
Are you feeling I'm feeling a little bit tired because
I've been doing press all morning for this new TV show.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
But you know what, I'm excited.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
You gotta do it though, because it's an exciting move
that you're making. I already touched on the fact that
you know, we've been rocking with you since way back,
Like I remember seeing you like as an almost like
an intern at the front desk. To see your growth
as another mommy the like in the industry, Like, it's
just dope to see that growth. We'll talk about all
of that because you got so much going on. But
(01:02):
we always like to kick off the episode talking about
our babies, the ones that are making us mamas.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
And you know, they're always doing something new.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
Whether you got a new baby and you're just jumping
in the role, congratulations against Janelle, because welcome to the club.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
I love it. I love being a mom.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
I mean, whether you got a new baby or a
baby with a big old age, they're always doing something new.
Speaker 1 (01:24):
So what's something new that your baby's doing.
Speaker 4 (01:26):
So she actually just said her first sentence. She said,
she's already saying a ton of words, but she just
put together her first sentence and it was hafid. We
were at the beach and she was eating watermelon. She
loves watermelon, and she she's eating the watermelon and she's
all happy, and she literally went, I'm so happy.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
Oh my, oh, I just got a little goods bun.
It was.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
It was so cute, and I was like, what's her
first sentence? I'm so happy, Like I couldn't even believe.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
It's the best first sentence though, And she living her
best summer time life with a crispy watermelon hanging out.
Speaker 4 (02:02):
You love watermelon and strawberries, and she says them so cute.
You're like watermelon, You're like wo man while men and
then strawberries.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
Stop. Baby.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
She says, you have stepped into this mommy club with grace,
my dear, oh my god, you got the baby talk
all down, because all these moments as moms like we're
we're soaking it up with them.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
And we're in those moments.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
My baby is six and this young man is got
loose teeth right now. So you talk about having a
baby that can bite into a whole watermelon.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
I'm over here like, wait a minute, is it soft enough?
Is a tooth fund?
Speaker 2 (02:37):
Because you know, back in the day when we would
have a loose tooth, folks to tie strings to it,
throw a door on, you, do all types of traumatized
and stuff. I'm trying to make sure it's we're gonna
create a whole scene so you can lose your teeth
in a graceful way. Yeah, now you got the summer
here some of their teeth, So it's it's a whole
situation over here.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
But that's fun again.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
I mean, I'm so excited for you that you, you know,
are stepping into this mind. I had a moment there
while I was watching Ridiculousness and I was like, wait
a minute, where's Janelle at I need the giggle, I
need my home girl there. And of course, you know
you've been doing it for what thirty seas? You were
on the show for thirty seasons.
Speaker 4 (03:13):
Yeah, thirty seasons. Twelve years. It's so crazy. It's like
it doesn't even feel like it's been that long. But
I realized it when my makeup artists on Ridiculousness she
one day she's like her talk about her son like
being a senior in high school. I was like, wait what,
I'm like, I remember the first season filming the show
and he was like a little boy, and I'm like,
(03:35):
it's like this time for me doing the show has
been a blur. And she had raised a whole child
and that say and so and so That's that's where
I was like, oh my gosh, it's like this has
been a blur for me. But I'm so excited for
this new show and the evolution of just coming from
that show into my own becoming a mom and now
(03:56):
finally getting to show you know, everybody, what I really
do is it's really exciting.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
And that's the part of it that I'm excited about
the growth for you, right, because we would see you
on TV and we would hear little things here and
there about what you got going on. Of course, the
music was always a part of you know, Chanelle West
Coast and who you are. But now, like you said,
it's not it's it's one of those moments of like,
this is actually more sweet and bitter, right, because now
you're you're spreading your wings and you're letting the folks know, look,
(04:24):
I'm about to step into this mama role and continue
to do all the other things because you got fashion,
you got new music.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
Right, how do you talk to me?
Speaker 4 (04:35):
I got a lot going on of the music. It's
always been the first first passion in my life. My
first love was music. I am immersed in my music
at all times. When I'm as soon as Bowie naps,
I'm like, let me write, let me write some bars,
let me write some music. You're gonna really get to
see me on my journey as a recording artist, trying
(04:56):
to really get to that next level with my music
career and trying to get to that next level while
I am now a new mom and navigating motherhood for
my first time. So I'm just really excited to show
the world all of that. You know, it's and what
better place to do it than MTV. You know, MTV
is the music television.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
Network right right.
Speaker 4 (05:19):
I'm really happy to be able to bring music back
to the forefront of a show. You know, we got
love and hip hop, but I think sometimes the drama
can take over there. And and really with this show,
I want to show that, you know, music is my passion,
My baby is my passion, and we're combining the two
and we're making it work.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
You know.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
The hustle is real, right, and that's what our podcast
right here is about too, is you know, also just
giving flowers to our mamas because people don't always take
a moment to stop down and say, look, I know
that you are a mom first, but you have to
provide for your babies. Hey, you got to feel fulfilled
and what you're doing, you know, to have those moments
(06:00):
where you get to be a mom, You get to
knock down your career goals and knock off all the
things on your list and you still have time for
self care like you're doing it right. And this is
what this conversation, this podcast is about is to give
flowers to moms and let folks know, Look, it's hard
sometimes to be breastfitting ten minutes before you got to
(06:20):
jump into a meeting, and then right after the meeting
you got to snap back into mommy mode, you know
what I'm saying. And have you ever had those moments,
you know, being that you're so musically passionate creating little
songs for your baby. You're talking about writing bars right
after she goes, Yeah, like you probably rap her to
sleep sometimes.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
No, I make up so many little songs for her.
It's so funny. And that's what I love too.
Speaker 4 (06:40):
That's one of the biggest joys of being a mother,
is like I'll be singing these little songs to her.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
You know.
Speaker 4 (06:45):
Sometimes it's like it's first thing in the morning. I'm like,
my voice is still rough, I'm right off key was
my iboogers and Bowie's just like like clop like it's.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
The best performance she's ever seen, you know.
Speaker 4 (06:58):
And that's the beauty of being mom is like you
have your biggest fan already. And yeah, that's something I
don't know if I full outset it in the show,
but that is something that I've realized is. I do
have big dreams of my music career and I want
to I want to make it very far. But at
the end of the day, if that were not to happen,
I already have my fand and Bowie, you know, like
(07:20):
I'll do concerts for her and have fun and it'll
be way easier too.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
Girl. I don't know if it's way easier.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
My kids be like, excuse me, we need an encore,
and I'm like, can I get a drink of water?
Speaker 1 (07:30):
Is it cool? Man?
Speaker 2 (07:32):
But the West Coast Hustle you can catch it on
Thursdays of course on MTV. But talk to us about
you know what you've been experiencing with the juggle, because
it's a juggle right like on the daily Like there
are women myself included. You know, we have visions and
we have these things. We're like, Okay, I know how
this is going to work. I got a business plan,
but how do I fit that in with my baby? Now?
Speaker 1 (07:54):
With this new schedule? What has been you know the
obstacles for you?
Speaker 3 (07:58):
The obstacles really have been.
Speaker 4 (08:00):
It's funny like Dom and I both have very flexible
schedules with our careers. He does real estate and modeling.
You know, I'm doing music and I have my swimwear line.
We're able to both work from home a lot, but
then we both have to leave town a lot for work.
And you know, it's funny, like these things will always happen.
I'm like, I have a studio session scheduled for next Thursday.
(08:20):
Next thing, you know, he gets booked for a last
minute modeling job on that day, and I'm like, I had.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
My whole schedule, you know what I mean.
Speaker 4 (08:29):
He has to take his jobs and work too, so
then last minute, I'm scrambling to be like, okay, mom,
can you watch the baby or the babysitter or And
you know that's really just that's that's what I've had to,
you know, to learn to deal with. Is I am
a creative and I want to be creative and stay
working on my music.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
But it's a lot more structured now, you know.
Speaker 4 (08:50):
Like I was just saying this in another interview, It's
like before I had a baby, I would just feel
creative and be like, Okay, I'm gonna go down I
have a little studio on my downstairs. I'd be like, oh,
I'm just go make a song right now. I don't
have that freedom anymore. So I'm scheduling studio sessions for
next week. Then that day comes and I'm like, I
don't even feel creative today, but I gotta do it
because somebody's watching the baby today and I have the
(09:12):
chance to. So, you know, it does affect the creative
process a little bit, but it also is it. I'm
inspired a little more too to make music, knowing that
I have this child to like to to to be
an example for, you know what I mean, And so
when I am able to get in the studio, I
will say, as a mom, I do feel a little
(09:34):
bit more inspired these days.
Speaker 3 (09:35):
I love it.
Speaker 4 (09:36):
I feel like it's not just like making a song,
you know, as a rapper. Naturally, I got into this
because I was like, I'm gonna just talk some shit,
and now it's not just about that. Now it's like, Okay,
I want to make a positive song that's gonna inspire.
I want to make a love song for the couples
out there. You know, it really does change your creative place.
Speaker 1 (09:54):
I'm not laughing. I'm laughing because I'm feeling you on that.
Speaker 2 (09:57):
Because one of the things I wanted to talk to
you about is being that you're a mom. Now I
went through this myself, like it's humbling, Like you look
back at stuff and you've got it on a whole
other degree where you've got probably pictures and videos of
you back before you were a mom, and you're like,
wait a minute, do I would I still approach that
situation that way? And you were talking about, you know,
(10:18):
jumping on the track and talking that that that mess
or whatever, and that was like, wait a minute, is
this something that would be what I feel comfortable playing
for my baby? I mean, have you had those moments
where you maybe look back or cause you know, you
don't like we don't we don't like reliving old stuff
that doesn't doesn't sit well.
Speaker 1 (10:35):
But at the same.
Speaker 2 (10:36):
Time, like now that it's been some time, you can
kind of laugh at it, like, wait a minute.
Speaker 1 (10:40):
Was that was I really talking to that person that
way in public?
Speaker 2 (10:44):
Like but sometimes it calls for that, right, like it
costs you to come out your skin and remind folks
like you can't just disrespect me.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
But at the same time, now that we're moms.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
We're like, okay, that was that was me back in
the day when I was ready to get prety for anything, right,
Like I'm dealing with the smoke in different ways, right,
for sure.
Speaker 3 (11:03):
I have calmed down a lot. I've always been.
Speaker 4 (11:06):
I've always been a very chill person, a very chill,
friendly person, and sometimes I think that's when people think
they can like almost like be rude and like take advantage.
And that's led me to a lot of situations and
needing to speak up and be like no, no, no, no, no,
hold on, I'm not that I can defend myself. I
up on my behalf, which has maybe led to some
(11:26):
past like TMZ moments or whatever which people don't even
you know, know the whole story. But I'll say this,
the way I react to things now that I'm a
mom is if, oh my god, those moments would have
never happened if I was a mom back then, I
would have been like, I'm too tired for this, bye,
It's cool.
Speaker 1 (11:43):
I wanted to be at home anyway.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
Yes, exactly.
Speaker 4 (11:46):
And I'm like, dude, as a mom, like you just don't.
You don't have the energy for drama or petty stuff
at all. Like my child is what I'm way more
concerned about than arguing with somebody, you know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (11:57):
Oh, Yeah, for sure, I'm right there with you.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
I do have my moments every once in a while
where I'm like, I wish I had the energy to
go outside a little bit more like and not even party,
but just to be outside in that environment.
Speaker 1 (12:10):
Right, And then you're like, you know.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
What, it's actually quite comfy snuggling up with baby and
you know, hearing her baby talking all like this stuff.
But i mean, you know, I think the thing that
is the most kind of like mirror check is as
your baby starts to grow and you start to see
them do things that you do, You're like, oh my god,
like I gotta I gotta start rolling my eyes so.
Speaker 1 (12:31):
Much, or just little things that you do that they
pick up on.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
Are you noticing that she's picking up on things that
you're just like, oh.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
She definitely is, uh.
Speaker 4 (12:40):
And so that's why, you know, I'm very It's so
funny like I and I've never had like a cursing problem,
but like it's so crazy.
Speaker 3 (12:46):
I'll like, cursing has completely went out the window for me.
Speaker 4 (12:48):
Like like even yes, yeah, I had my girl on
speaker and we're talking and she said the F word
like twenty times, And before I had a kid, I
wouldn't have noticed at all, and on speaker and I'm
just like, h like she's cursing a lot.
Speaker 1 (13:04):
Every time they do it, your body does a little
ooh did they hear that? Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 4 (13:08):
So it's like I naturally just kind of snap into
like the the the edited version of myself for my baby.
Speaker 3 (13:16):
You know.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
Oh it's and it becomes more natural as they get older.
You go see you go see what the West Coast hustle.
I mean you you keep saying dom and dropping his
name for us that you know this is gonna this
is new for us right to see you in this
relationship and get to know him. And I'm hearing that
You're gonna have some guests on the show here and there.
Who you bringing on the show?
Speaker 4 (13:36):
I can't say who, but you're definitely gonna get to
see uh this season and in the next season. Some
of you know, my celebrity friends, you know I'm bringing
I'm bringing on anybody who is down to come on
and show love. You know, I've got a lot of
a lot of cool friends in the industry, and they've
been really big supporters of mine as well, So I'm
bringing a few of them on the show just to
(13:58):
make little cameos. But yeah, it's it's really exciting to
be doing the show with my family, and I think
that the world is gonna really love not just this
other side of me, but they're gonna love Dom, my partner,
They're gonna love my baby Bowie and my friends. My
friends have a really deep storyline in the season as well.
(14:18):
That's also inspiring to a lot of people. And I
just think people are gonna connect with everybody on the
show so much. So I'm really excited for you guys
to watch. And it's every Thursday on MTV.
Speaker 1 (14:30):
I love all of that.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
And you get to see the fashion line, you get
to see mommy at work, at home and all that
good stuff.
Speaker 1 (14:36):
So it's gonna be a beautiful thing.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
And like I said in the beginning, when I first
found out that you was leaving the show, I was like,
wait a minute, home, pause, what's going on? But it's
dope to see you getting to show the world the
fools shitnail West Coast and you're gonna hold it down
for the West right.
Speaker 4 (14:50):
Oh always my fam I got family on the East
Coast too, and they're always like, you're alienating us.
Speaker 3 (14:56):
I'm like, no, I'm not. I'm holding it down for
the West.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
Hey, right, it's no alienating. We're just proud, and especially
with what Kenny did for us. I mean, man, just
holding down the coast. It's no shade to anybody else.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
We're just proud to be where we're at on this coast.
But I'm so excited for you.
Speaker 2 (15:14):
I mean, there's so much for people to learn about
you Thursdays that can be with you and the fam.
Speaker 1 (15:18):
There is there, I mean, anything.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
Else you want to just share with us, because this
New Mommi world is an adventure.
Speaker 4 (15:25):
I mean, I just I you know, I don't want
to give away the whole show. I just want people
to know though, that it is. It's a lot of craziness.
It's the type of show where you're gonna go from
laughing to crying within like ten minutes, and you're just
gonna be like just feeling good.
Speaker 3 (15:39):
You know.
Speaker 4 (15:39):
I compared it twice now to Forrest Gump, and the
first girl I said it to you was dying laughing
at me, and I was like.
Speaker 3 (15:47):
Yo, well that's what it makes me feel like.
Speaker 4 (15:50):
You watch Forrest Gump, you laugh, you cry, You're like
and you just watch that movie and when it ends,
you're like, man, that made me feel good. And that's
how this show makes you feel. It makes you feel
like that.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
And this is why I wanted to bring you on
this Mama Got Drama, because the drama is all the
emotions we go through being working mamas. One minute, we're excited,
We're like crying, we got this new human that our
body just created. Next thing, you're like, oh my god,
how do I handle this? And it's just all the
emotions that we're trying to juggle and how we're breaking
through these obstacles to raise capable humans, to knock down
(16:22):
these career goals, and finding time for self care really quickly.
What is your go to self care because you got
to get it in there to be able to care
for your baby.
Speaker 4 (16:29):
Oh yes, well I'm all about. First for my mental care,
it's the meditation. I love medicine and that keeps me
calm and really also just you know, staying active, working out.
I like to go to the gym. We love to hike.
We take the baby hiking with us. Just being in nature.
That's so good for your mind and for your body,
you know, being in the sun and around the trees,
(16:49):
like all of that is actually good for our health,
you know, so those things really help me. And for
skin care. I'm obsessed with skincare. I've been so into
my skincare since I was like twenty, and that's just
what I'm really into.
Speaker 3 (17:05):
My face masks, you know what I mean.
Speaker 4 (17:06):
Getting to do a good face mask is like I
just like to relax in my bubble bath with my
face mask and I'm happy.
Speaker 1 (17:13):
Oh, a good face mask has changed your whole afternoon.
Speaker 2 (17:16):
Yep, Sanel West Coast, thank you so much for coming
on this Mama Got Drama.
Speaker 1 (17:22):
We appreciate you. Mama, thank you too,
