Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, Monica, thank you very much, and welcome to
the Morning Show here on seven hundred WLW. Scotty Hunter
is the co founder of Urban Artifact Beer and Coast
Alo Hemp, and he was kind enough to join us
a couple of weeks ago when the big story out
there was Governor Dwine trying to shut down the sale

(00:23):
of hemp products, and then it was overridden by the
Ohio state legislature. Now we're learning that in the reboot
to restart the federal government, apparently there has been some
kind of clause in there that's been written to shut
down the sale of hemp products entirely. Scotty, this is
right up your alley. Were you completely caught off guard

(00:44):
by this news?

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Tom?

Speaker 3 (00:47):
I never thought this was possible, quite honestly. Caught off guard.
Not entirely, though. Our trade groups have been aware of
this as a potential threat for four six, eight weeks
or so. We've been working built generally to get engaged
and contact our politicians, but unfortunately we haven't been able
to make as much progress as we would have liked to.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
At this point, what are you being told or what's
your trade group being told about how this came about.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
You know, this is a couple of very powerful politicians
in Congress that wanted this to happen through their special
interest groups. Frankly, like, we have polling data nationally, state
level that shows consumers want these products, they want them
to be regulated, they want them to be tested, they
want them to be safe. So the fact that federal

(01:41):
politicians would come in and override the twenty eighteen Farm
Bill potentially cause devastating effects on economy. We're talking a
twenty eight billion dollar industry, three hundred thousand jobs and
growing countless investments, all getting wiped away without even having
their day in Congress to speak and educate on what

(02:04):
this could do. You know, this was done through this
spending bill specifically so the public went and catch wind
of it and push back on it.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
Explain to me what this means in real numbers, or
real figures or real personnel issues. This means to you
because as I mentioned earlier, Scottie Hunter, you're the co
founder of Urban Artifact Beer and Coast Alo hemp products.
What could this potentially mean to you and your businesses?

Speaker 2 (02:35):
Yeah? No, absolutely, Tom.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
I appreciate that you know this is whether it's our
own hemp products or hemp products that we make for
other companies, other beverage companies, including some folks here locally.
You know, that's about fifty percent of our revenue right now, Tom,
So you know, we're looking at a pretty devastating effect
to our business if we're not able to get something
done in the next year's time. When you know, we

(03:00):
get a we do get a sale through period for
the products, so you know, at least there is that.
It gives us some time to activate and organize folks.
But yeah, fifty percent of our revenue, and you know,
I don't know how many businesses could sustain that, and
you know, main as they are in terms of personnel.
So I'm hoping that I don't have to really dig
in and think about those numbers too much because quite honestly,

(03:20):
I want to get something and the whole industry wants
to get something addressed well before we have to deal
with that.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
Is there any feeling at all that this part, this,
for lack of a better term, this addendum to getting
the government restarted, that this could be changed, if not sooner,
at least not too much later.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
I don't think it's anything that's going to happen quickly.
Given the federal government. You know, the House is going to,
I believe, vote on this bill today. Everybody wants the
government to be open, reopened, right like. And that's why
this is the way this was done was so devious,
quite honestly, is that it didn't really get of a
lot of politicians the choice to protect the hemp industry

(04:04):
because if they did that, potentially then you further delay
reopening the federal government. You know, the news stores are everywhere,
right the federal government needs to be reopened. People need
to be paid, we need air traffic controllers. Just it's
such a larger issue, even though you know, hemp is
a is a very you know, significant and growing business.

(04:24):
But it didn't give a lot of politicians many choices
in the matter. And that, frankly, was very sad and
disappointing to see.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
Are you finding, Scottie Hunter, that this is a political
issue Republican versus Democrat or is this a bipartisan issue?

Speaker 3 (04:41):
This this is bipartisan, you know, quite frankly. Our biggest
proponent is Senator Ram Paul of Kentucky. He did everything
in his power to stand up for the hemp industry. Ultimately,
he didn't get done when he wanted to, but he
will continue to fight. You know, I've seen, you know,
there's Democratic senators such as Center Lighten who introduced a
regulatord bill for products earlier this year, or tried to.

(05:05):
I saw Senator Ted Cruz come out yesterday and speak
out in terms of keeping the federal government out of
this and allowing states to regulate because the majority of
states either have or are in process of regularly regulating
these products, just like we're talking about in Ohio a
few weeks ago. And you know, I think the fact
that you know, big brother large government is coming in

(05:27):
and telling the states what they can and can't do,
telling the American people what they can and can't do, they.

Speaker 4 (05:32):
Should all be, you know, very angry.

Speaker 3 (05:34):
I'm gonna try to keep my words safe for the air,
Tom that everybody should should be angry because this is
very on American This is overreach and it shouldn't be
stood for.

Speaker 1 (05:44):
It seems to me that based on what you just
said and correct me if I'm wrong, I might be
one hundred percent wrong. I frequently am one hundred percent wrong.
It seems to me if they could do this to
the hemp industry, overriding what states have decided.

Speaker 4 (05:59):
And we just had this.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
You and I were on the air a couple of
weeks ago where the Ohio State Legislature had a very
very direct and firm policy on how they wanted this
to be, overriding Governor to wine on this thing. It
seems to me they could do the same thing on
dispensaries with marijuana.

Speaker 2 (06:21):
Oh absolutely.

Speaker 3 (06:22):
I think that's the principle of this matter. At the
very root of it is, you know, wiping out an
industry without you know, proper hearing and proper discussions, and
that should really scare you know, any any American that
fights for freedom, because you know, it's my it's my

(06:42):
business today and a lot of my colleagues, businesses and allies,
But it could be anybody else's next week because some
special interest group decides, I've got this powerful politician in
my back pocket and I don't like what they're doing
because it is potentially competitive for what I do, and
that's just not fair, that's not American.

Speaker 1 (06:59):
From what you're being this hasn't passed yet, it looks
like it might pass tonight, which this hemp addendum is
inside of this entire package of reopening the government, this
clean resolution for lack of a better term, are you
being told that you've got to stop selling your products
as soon as this thing goes in effect tonight.

Speaker 2 (07:22):
No, it would not.

Speaker 3 (07:23):
Be as soon as it goes go into effect the
night tom as soon as, you know, we do expect
it will pass the House, because again it's it's first
and foremost.

Speaker 4 (07:32):
About reopening government, right, and nobody.

Speaker 3 (07:35):
Argues that, so it'll go through the House once President
Trump signs it. There is a provision in the bill
that allows for three hundred and sixty five days per
GLAD effective date, right, and so you know, HEMP businesses
technically will have that amount of time to you know,
kind of try to adapt their businesses, line down, sell
through products, but realistically fight.

Speaker 4 (07:56):
And we're going to need anybody.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
That you know consumes HAMP product or cares about states
rights or access in this country to be active. And
as somebody that had doubted what you know, their voice
could do in the past, I've found out that you
can make a difference.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
You really can.

Speaker 3 (08:15):
And it might not be just one call or one email,
but if you're persistent and you care and you continue
to contact your legislators. You can absolutely make a difference,
and we will need many, many millions of Americans to
do that and make their voice hurt, because we have
many millions of customers that consume these products that want
to continue to have access. And the other point that
I'll make too, Tom, is, you know a lot of

(08:35):
people are throwing around misinformation that this is you know,
this is just gas station weed and things like that.
With the way they redefine the processing rules on the
hemp side, CBD products are in jeopardy because processors can't
even extract the CBD from the plant and not exceed
the zero point three percent TC threshold. But this new

(08:58):
regulations put into place, so anybody that uses just pure
CBD for a therapeutic standpoint is likely to lose their
access for that as well. So this is hugely, hugely detrimental.

Speaker 1 (09:07):
Wow, I mean you're talking now even more tens hundreds
of millions of dollars in that whole CBD thing too.
All right, Scotty, We're thanking everybody, and we wish you
nothing but the best. Thanks for joining us on such
short notice. But this just became news basically overnight when
this thing went through about one o'clock in the morning.

(09:28):
So best of luck and we'll continue to check in
with you and see how all this goes, Sir, I
hope all turns out for you.

Speaker 4 (09:33):
Okay, all right, thanks to appreciate you having me, all right.

Speaker 1 (09:37):
Buddy, Scotty Hunter, co founder of Urban Artifact Beer and
Coast Alo hemp Products.

Speaker 4 (09:43):
That is a big, big deal.

Speaker 1 (09:46):
You know, you don't even have to be I don't
think on this topic, you don't have to be a
hemp products user. I think he brings up something here
about big brother and government. Look, I'm not saying what
they're trying to do is right or wrong. I quite

(10:07):
honestly don't know enough about the whole thing. I don't
know what is the impetus behind the United States federal
government putting this into the government reopening bill that'll be
voted upon probably tonight. But here's what I do know.

(10:29):
I do know that states have done their jobs, rightly
or wrongly in trying to handle this whole marijuana thing.
Voters here in Ohio, I still think it was a
terrible mistake voting to legalize recreational marijuana because of the
long term effects of marijuana on individuals kids. Not talking

(10:52):
about miracle marijuana here. I just think it was a
bad mistake. But it doesn't matter what I think about it,
because more of you voted for it than against it.
But the bottom line is states presented it to voters
or in the Hemp case, to the legislators who made
decisions about how they want to run it in their
very US state. And now the federal government is coming

(11:13):
in and saying, no, we don't care what you think.
This is what we're going to do.

Speaker 3 (11:22):
HM.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
Between that and that story we heard a minute ago
on Google, Bill you talk about a disturbing story Google
reading your emails into all your personal stuff. Wasn't there
something written by a guy named Orwell years ago, nineteen
eighty four. It's happening right before our very eyes. And

(11:49):
this isn't conspiracy theory stuff. They're being sued Google. They've
done it. They've been doing it to you and me.
All right, eight twenty one, Let's check the roadway day
and see what Chapman out there chuck.

Speaker 4 (12:02):
Things getting any better.

Speaker 5 (12:04):
Sir, They started to, But now within the last few
minutes we're taking another turn for the worse. This from
the UC held Trimphic Center. You'll find more options and
clinical trials for pancratic cancer care at the UC Cancer Center.
Had a second opinion fast called five one three five
eight five UCCC latest wreck on southbound seventy five is

(12:25):
it sitting day and that was just starting to clear
out from earlier problems at Tylersville.

Speaker 4 (12:30):
That's where the break lights start once again.

Speaker 5 (12:32):
Now then slow again through the Wachland Split down to
the Record Paddock that has the right lane blocked. There's
a new wreck on eastbound two seventy five, this time
at mostellar right lanes are blocked off. Traffic now backing
up past seventy five and heading for seven forty seven.
Northbound seventy five continues slow between Donaldson and downtown. Chuck

(12:53):
Ingram News Radio seven hundred wlw WCPO nine first warning forecast.
It's going to be a beautiful day today unshine. We're
up to fifty three degrees, down to thirty four tonight,
clear and dry, then tomorrow more sunshine, pleasant seasonal temperatures
at fifty four, and then by Friday we're warming up,
continuing on sunshine and we're up to sixty two degrees

(13:16):
may be as high as seventy on Saturday, a little
bit cooler Sunday, but still lots of sunshine. Eight twenty
two coming up in the next half hour. Jason Williams,
I thought, wrote an extremely thought provoking column yesterday in
The Cincinnati Inquirre talking about this whole Joe Burrow thing.

(13:37):
Burrow's gotten remarkably, extraordinarily miraculously, some might say, healthy, healthy
er believes he might be ready to play as early
as Thanksgiving night, when the Bengals play against the Ravens.
But if the Bengals lose this week and next, should
they let him play? Eight twenty three, seven hundred WLW

(14:00):
forty one in the Morning Show seven hundred WLW Pastor
chat on vacation this week.

Speaker 4 (14:06):
Kind enough to join us. I love the stuff that
he writes.

Speaker 1 (14:09):
I did when he was in the quote unquote political
world and now shifting gears over to the sports world
at Cincinnati dot com and the Cincinnati Inquired. Jason Williams
a leads sports columnist over there. And I love the fact, Jason,
that you're not afraid to write things that might not
necessarily be popular with the fan base.

Speaker 4 (14:29):
He wrote the story earlier this year about Hunter Green.

Speaker 1 (14:31):
I thought it was a very fair logical presentation, at
least thinking about the possibility of trading him.

Speaker 4 (14:41):
And now you write a piece where.

Speaker 1 (14:45):
It was in yesterday's paper about this potential clash between
Joe Burrow and the people that signed his paycheck, the Bengals.
A should he play Fe's healthy or be should the
Bengals if indeither out of contention, should they not let

(15:05):
him play? This shapes up to be very fascinating stuff.

Speaker 2 (15:12):
Tom. It's great to be with you, and I told
you on text yesterday I love, love, love your show,
love that your back.

Speaker 4 (15:20):
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (15:21):
Uh, it's awesome, man. I I just I'm excited for
you and to continue to grow in your show. And
real quick on that Hunter Green day, I know people
gave me a hard time about you, but that was
that was reporting behind that. That wasn't just me making
that up out of sin air. I was talking to
people in the organization and that was what I was
picking up and that's what led to that. And you know,

(15:44):
here they are. But on the borough thing, Tom Wolf,
I mean they you know, the sheriff and I were
just talking off the air about all these different scenarios.
It is, uh, you there's so many different scenarios here
where you're kind of like, oh my gosh, these guys
are in a tough spot here, and tough in the

(16:05):
fact that it's Joe Burrow like and it's Joey franchise.
It's the most influential, most important player and franchise history,
so that factors into it. It's not as simple as
Zach Taylor saying, Hey, you know what, Bud, you're not
playing period where Alex playoff contention and you're not playing.

(16:30):
I guess it ultimately comes down to that if they're
out of contention. But I don't think it's that simple,
whereas it probably maybe would be for a lot of organizations.
But because the Cincinnati Bengals have set everything up that
everything revolves around Joe Burrow, that Joe Burrow now has
a voice, and he has the ear of the front office,

(16:53):
and he has influence over decisions they're making. Now. I'm
not saying he has complete influence, but they are listening
to him. They listened to him on re signing t Higgins.
They listened to him after the Super Bowl and they
were looking to bolster their offensive line and here's the guys.
I like that he let them know about He took
those guys to dinner, some of those, you know, potential

(17:16):
free agents, so that all stuff is factoring in here, like, oh,
we got to keep Joe Burrow happy. And if Joe
Burrow when I was that was down at his uh
down media availability on Monday, and I'm glad I was
there because you could pick up just the tone and
the body language and all it said, Tom was that

(17:39):
I'm playing, no matter what, if this team doesn't win
another game between now and the time I'm cleared to play,
I'm playing. This team's mathematically eliminated.

Speaker 4 (17:50):
I'm playing.

Speaker 2 (17:51):
That was the message that I picked up. And it
seems like that, you know, I mean again, you're in
the job. We're in, tomm you know, you're you're to
read between the two sometimes, But that was that was
that very much. Joe Burrow was sending that message, and
it's like, oh, are these guys heading toward a real

(18:13):
power struggle here, because how do you play the guy
if they're out of it? Or you know, and that's
the other thing too, are they going to be mathematically
eliminated by Thanksgiving or that first game in December, and
probably not with the way this division is. But let's
be honest, like, you know, they lose you know, four

(18:35):
of these next five or even three of them or whatever, like,
they're essentially out of it, and you can probably you
can make that argument now and I do you know
the fact that you lost those last two games the
way you did, like this season I think is effectively over.
But hey, look, you know you're not going to throw

(18:56):
the talent right now after the with the way this
division is. But from their standpoint, that's you know, you
can't blame them on that, sure, but I just find
I find the whole thing very fascinating. Tom and so
if they're out of it but not mathematically out of it,
and then it's all on top of that the Joe
Flack the quarterback position isn't their problem right now, and

(19:20):
so in all told, like Joe Burrow, get ready for
twenty twenty six. Let's reload, retool, try to figure out
this defensive thing, gets you fully healthy, and see if
you can have a season like you had in twenty
twenty four coming back in twenty twenty six.

Speaker 1 (19:39):
You know, the thing is for me, Jason and I
have long maintained this, and the analytics, the data, all
of it backs it up to be factual. It is
a different offense when Joe Burrow is the quarterback compared
to anybody else. And I don't mean to compare any
of the other quarterbacks to Joe Burrow. That's not what
I'm doing here. They're under center more, they run the

(20:03):
ball better when Burrow's not there, they're constantly in shotgun.
The only reason I bring this up, and look, that's
for smarter to people to figure out than me whether
that's good, bad, right, wrong, or indifferent. But it certainly
proves the fact that Burrow is running the show at
the end of the day on what kind of offense

(20:25):
they're running, So I tie that into this current situations
you just pointed out if they don't have a coach.
We all heard that Burrow had learned a lot watching
Jake Browning play well two years ago and the quarterback
being under center, running the ball more frequently, etc.

Speaker 4 (20:43):
Etc. We didn't learn anything from that.

Speaker 1 (20:45):
Now, he had a great year last year, but you
know it was Constant's shotgun again this year, which again
says to me, he's running the offense, which says to me,
the Higgins thing, all the things you pointed out that
in some small way, maybe large way, he's running a
lot of decision making in the franchise. So who in

(21:06):
the world in their right mind would think anybody in
that organization is going to tell him Nope, you're not playing.

Speaker 2 (21:15):
That's a great question, Tom. He's summed up. Well, I'm
glad you brought up the on field stuff too, because
you're exactly right. I've noticed that as well. I've I've
been like, how do I write about this, because it's
certainly been on my mind in terms of that. The
offense flat out is more balanced without him right now,
and this is not You don't want to criticize him

(21:36):
because he is. He is the guy, and he is
They can't win long term without him, I don't. They
can't win long term without at least a comminent defense either.
But you're right, like he audibles out of a lot
of a lot of run calls. He doesn't like running
the ball. They're a lot more balanced right now with

(21:56):
Joe Flacco. You know, I don't think that's any Joe
Flacco is a veteran who's taken the old cliche. He
takes what the defense gives him. And so you're seeing
them use Chase Brown more. And that guy's a good
player and you needed to see him more. But Joe
Burrow wants to sling it. He wants to sling at
the tee and Jamar and T and Jamar and T

(22:18):
and Jamar and sometimes just Sekey when he's when he's healthy.

Speaker 3 (22:23):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (22:23):
He that was another guy that he had influence on
them bringing back. Yeah, there's that piece too to it.
And and I did find from it from Burrow's press conference,
like I thought he would, you know, go out of
his way to really give a lot of kudos to Flaco,
and he certainly did, but it wasn't this big just

(22:47):
uh overly like, hey, I'm really glad they went out
and got Joe Flacco and that he's playing awesome. It's
great to see. Like there wasn't a lot of that. Now.
I'm not criticizing Joe Burrow for what he did or
didn't say about Joe Flacco, but I think Burrough's sitting
there feeling it a little bit. I think he's like, Hey,
this is my team and nothing nothing against Joe Flacco

(23:11):
or whatever. You know, he talked about how he respects
him and how he long respected him, and now it's
great to have him around. But I think I think
there's I think it's you can make that analysis that
Joe's you know, he's feeling a little bit in terms of,
you know, that's that should be me out there doing that.
I'm the one who does that, and and so I

(23:33):
you know, you wonder about you know that piece of
it too, and you know you didn't get a chance
to ask him about what he thought about the trade
itself of Flacco. But there's a lot going on here,
Tom and it's you hate to say it, but it
feels like more drama on the horizon potentially. And I'm

(23:55):
not saying from a public standpoint, and I didn't point
that out in my car. I don't think we're going
to see any public you know, Joe Burrow and Zach
Taylor and the franchise, you know, airing things the power
struggle publicly. You know, this is more of a behind
the scenes and you'll be able to pick it up
in some of the tone of what you know, some

(24:18):
of the you know guys say, or like what Burrow
may say or not say in a press conference, which
is the only time he talks to the media. That's
more of what I'm getting at. You know, we're not
going to see some big public blow up or you know,
Joe Burrow say this about the franchise, and the franchise
say this about him. So I just I do find

(24:40):
the whole thing fascinating. But I I don't know. I
just think that, you know, I think they're in.

Speaker 1 (24:46):
A weird spot, right, you know, their division sticks if
all of a sudden they win this weekend. I mean,
they're a game behind the Steelers, so and Baltimore is
coming on. There's no debate about that. They're starting to
look like the team everybody thought they would be, and
they look like they're going to eventually be the divisional winner.

(25:06):
But you're right, as you sit here today or maybe
on Monday, if they win, you're sitting there going, hey,
we're a game out of first as bad as we've been,
as crazy as we things have been, as bad as
it defense has been. And so if Joe Burrow wants
to come back, hey, you know, we welcome back.

Speaker 4 (25:21):
Jason.

Speaker 1 (25:22):
I cannot thank you enough for your time, my friend
joining us on short notice. Have a great day, man. See,
I love by I love this kind of debate because
not even debate. I love these conversations because I think
oftentimes remember now, the word fan is a shortened word
from fanatic, And look, we're all fans.

Speaker 4 (25:45):
I'm a huge fan, you're a huge fan.

Speaker 1 (25:47):
Right, But it doesn't mean that the best player on
our team that we're a fan of, or the coach
or whom the owner. It doesn't mean right about everything,
you can love Joe Burrow, while at the same time say, man,

(26:11):
I'm not sure this would be a good idea, because
you got to have him back next year. This window,
this proverbial window, it's gonna be twenty nine years old,
and they're staring down the barrel at this being a
third straight year they don't make the playoffs, two years
in which Burrow has not played much. So then this

(26:35):
time next year, we're talking about him being thirty. And look,
Matthew Stafford's playing great into his late thirties. Tom Brady
played great into his forties, So look, Burrow's not going anywhere.

Speaker 4 (26:47):
But all I'm saying is, at.

Speaker 1 (26:49):
Least open our mind a little bit to this entire
picture on whether this is a good idea or a
bad idea if they're in the hut. I think we
all agree if he's ready to play, he comes back
and plays, and you're all in if you're in the hut.
But if you lose these next two games and you're

(27:10):
sitting at three and eight, is it a good idea
for Joe Burrow to come back and play the rest
of this season? All right, let's check the traffic out
there one more time before we get out of here,
and uh, chuck Ingram, how are things coming along?

Speaker 4 (27:27):
Not good?

Speaker 5 (27:27):

(27:48):

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
