Speaker 1 (00:00):
Because you're waking up fifth in the morning time. Kiss Hi,
good morning. Ask Julie on the jobs. She's our show's
career mentor you know, if you've listened before, she's helped
me navigate my show in our career here at iheard,
and so she answers your questions, stuff that's come up
on TikTok, stuff that's come up through our DMS, talkbacks,
(00:20):
all sorts of way to get in touch. Hi Julie.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Hello.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
First of all, shout out to all of our nurses
and you know, people who work in the trades, electricians, plumbers,
everyone that you know doesn't follow the typical nine to
five schedule. People want to go back to the trades, Julie,
did you feel like they ever really went away or no, it.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Went didn't go away. But what happened was we have
such an emphasis on a four year degree as being
the only way to have success and happiness. Yeah, that
the trades got left behind and got looked at as
a as a second option, and I think that's a
shame and we're suffering for it right now.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Okay, So I figured you'd be perfect for this question, then, Hi, Julie,
all my friends are looking into college. I always thought
I would go to a four year school and have
that typical college experience, But I find myself not knowing
what to do with my life. My dad's an electrician,
and I always told myself I never wanted to be
like my dad. No judgment, but I kind of am
(01:20):
torn because I wanted the college experience. But I'm scared
of debt and I can see the benefits of being
an electrician? Can you help me work through this?
Speaker 2 (01:31):
Thoughts? True? So if you are, yeah, if you are
thinking about this, you are not alone. And this is
what I love about this. Half of gen Z and
almost half a millennials are considering getting into a trade profession.
And the thing about trade professions are does not require
a four year degree. And what I love about it
is it's a great way to get had stability. Trades
(01:56):
jobs cannot be outsourced and cannot be typically done by
AI and good one right, yeah, and you can get
into it right away. And what people are struggling with
right now, and what this listener is struggling with is, yeah,
well if I go and get a four year degree,
what am I going to do when I get out?
(02:16):
And there's no like it's not a direct path. And
I hear that now with gen Z who is graduating
from college, like, I don't know what I want to do.
If you go study to be an electrician, a plumber,
be in the hvac world, be anything that a tree
school does, auto repair, any of those things. They're so sophisticated.
Now you know exactly what you're going to be doing
(02:39):
when you get out. There's a direct line from your
education to a job, and that is very appealing. These
jobs also typically tend to be not only stable, but
give you the opportunity to have work life balance and
resist the urge from those around you to say, oh,
you've got to go to a four year school. No
(03:00):
you don't. It kind of did used to be that way,
but we're past that. Yeah, we all do it and
all that. Yeah, so we've moved on, which is a
great Which is great news.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
Okay, what would you then recommend for someone in Sincy?
Then if they say, you're right, Julie, I should just
go and do the trades because I am type A
and this this will work for me. You lack the
college experience, yes, or no ways around that, just tidbits.
If you have.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
So go check out. You have to do some research.
Go to Cincinnati State, look at the UC campuses, the
branch campuses, look at all the trade schools that exist
in Cincinnati. Just do a Google search. Get in there,
start reading about all the education programs they offer and
just see which ones appeal which one's appeal to you.
You can start doing that research and see how you
feel about it and see like, does this seem like
(03:48):
something I could be good? And then take a few classes.
You know this doesn't you give a forty plus years
to work. You don't have to have it all figured
out today. Just get started.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
