from Wawatosa West High School as we bring you a
sectional semi final. I'm the girls side of the state
Division two basketball tournament here on Fox Sports nine twenty
and your iHeart Radio appnu Beryl and Eisenhower against Waukeshaw

West and big Time. This time of year, you get
to bring out some jewelry. The excitement goes to both sides,
the girls and the boys. And now that we're two
games away, these are the ones that are really really fun.

Speaker 4 (00:59):
Billy coached a long time, right and people ask me,
you miss it that I missed this? Yeah, miss I
look the grind. I don't miss a whole lot. But
the sectionals I was lucky enough to win be part
of some state championship teams. And I can't tell you
a lot about the state championship games.

Speaker 1 (01:20):
I can tell you almost played by place.

Speaker 4 (01:23):
Sectional semis sectional finals. Those were the games for some
reason that I remember so much.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
I remember a travel call. I remember a game where.

Speaker 4 (01:35):
We we we spent the entire year of closing out
high hand and don't jump on on a shot Bake,
And against.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
East Troy in the corner, we're up one.

Speaker 4 (01:47):
Time, running down shot baked, the kid goes flying past
them and he hits a He hits a shot from
from short corner. And so that's the stuff I can
that I just remember, and the atmosphere for a state
semi final. But what's interesting, Billy, the game we're at
is not like there's some marquee games around the area

and around the state tonight. When you look at the
records of these two teams, you got to play who's
ahead of it, right, you gotta. If you look at
at their regional and their sectional, you're kind of like,
heyde Berlin Eisner got the one seed and and Seedarberg
got the two and Wakshall West got the free But
if you look at some of the other regional sectionals

in the Division two division, on any of them, sometimes
you kind of luck out a little bit. But that
doesn't mean that you go into a game thinking, well,
you know we got where this isn't a great sectional
and we got a.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
Chance to get You just play who's ahead of it.
As coaches, we look at that stuff. And now coaches
our thing are.

Speaker 4 (02:50):
Are watching to see who's gonna win the Nasha West
a peer, But you don't even talk about that game
to these kids. It's look, we didn't got to be
on the side of mine, I say, But as coaches,
we always work ahead, right, You don't look ahead, but
you work ahead. And if I walked up the coach Closston,
a coach Darling and they said, what do you know
about Manasha or West of Pier, they could they'll break

down there starting five, breakdown who's coming off the bench.
And these players don't know they've done all that. And
in practice, if they think that they got a decent
chance to win this game, they're already putting in drills
against who they think is gonna win West of Piramnasha
because they play them in two days.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
So it's like, look, this time of year, it's so
much fun.

Speaker 4 (03:33):
It's the whole chess match of how much time are
we gonna put in for this?

Speaker 1 (03:37):
How much time we're gonna put in for this?

Speaker 4 (03:39):
We're gonna you know, we've already shut them down a lot,
maybe three weeks ago as far as two are.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
Practices and getting them on the line and running.

Speaker 4 (03:48):
Now we're getting a lot of shots up and getting
a lot of stuff done, how to break their press
when they go to zone, that kind of stuff, and
it's just really fun as a coach.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
You don't sleep much this time of year.

Speaker 4 (03:58):
I asked Bach asked both Darling and classon how much
you'd be slept, and they shiit. Come on, man, you
know you've been through That've been through it to know
that that's not happening. Yeah, you got that silver ring
over there for a reason. There was a lot of
sleepless nights at this time of year.

Speaker 1 (04:12):
Cool man.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
When when you talk about it, part of the grind
throughout the week is you get to earn the next week.
You sign up to play the entire regular season, but
you play the regular season to get a chance.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
To do this.

Speaker 3 (04:25):
You go through all the hard stuff to be able
to get a chance to do this here into the playoffs,
and we're gonna have a whole lot of fun here
tonight on the pick and Set high school basketball game
of the Week.

Speaker 4 (04:32):
You know, I it's a big game because uh Rob
Russell is sitting next to us and Tom Mainville, mister
Mainfeld's daughter plays for New Girl, and Eisenhower talking about it,
we go. Tom Mainville is one of the good guys.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
He is one.

Speaker 4 (04:45):
There's no doubt he's one of the good guys. I
talked to him for about twenty minutes yesterday and I said, hey,
how you feeling, He goes man, I get nervous. I'm
nervous about thist A pacing. And his daughter is a
junior on this team. She's led them in scoring the
last last two games, but their big time score had
been out with a concussion.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
She's back.

Speaker 4 (05:05):
Wakshaw West is out one of their best players fractured
an ankle, a big time softball player. I just saw
her on crutches walking a by and with six minutes
to go, they were up sixteen or eighteen and talking
to coach Darling and he said, look, I'm you know,
we're we're up eighteen with six minutes to go. Maybe
I should have had her. All said absolutely not, it's

a regional finals.

Speaker 1 (05:28):
Yet you got too much on the line. And they
were up.

Speaker 4 (05:30):
They were up fourteen with like four minutes going the
first half and it was even a half.

Speaker 1 (05:35):
And he said, look, I was a little gun shot.
And he said.

Speaker 4 (05:38):
If it was a horrible, horrible injury, and I feel bad,
and we're going to be missing her a lot. She
doesn't score a lot, but she does everything else. She's
our best defensive player. She rebounds, she attacks the basket
and kicks. He said, we're gonna miss her a little
bit tonight.

Speaker 1 (05:55):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (05:56):
And the competitiveness when you're one of those types of players,
we see it all over the time, all over the place.

Speaker 1 (06:02):
When you're one of these multi.

Speaker 3 (06:03):
Sport athletes, the competitiveness you bring to the floor, especially
into these clutch games, right a lot of times can
be invaluable.

Speaker 1 (06:09):
So we got a big one here coming up tonight.

Speaker 3 (06:11):
As the crowd continues to file in, Mike and everybody
see wants the way with Dan carry the voice coach
from Pies.

Speaker 4 (06:18):
He's here to support Joel Clauson. I'm sure Clawson still
works in the building. I believe at Pies coaches their
softball team, and he you know now when he when
he's playing Pies.

He said it a little bit weird because some people
cheering for me, other people booing me.

But now they they can come and and and cheer
for cheer for close Clawson and coach Carry. Coach Carry
from Pies is here. I think he's I think he's
supporting Clawson. I'm sure you look at yes he is,
so yeah, turn not to support coach Clawson?

Who uh you want to talk about one of the
long time guys in the business.

Speaker 1 (06:54):
He didn't you give you an award or something?

Speaker 3 (06:56):
Gave me the most the award for playing with the
most layer at the highest basketball camp at one point.

Speaker 4 (07:03):
Not efficiency do you have a little Jason Williams your
game or what little white chocolate?

Speaker 1 (07:08):
Yes, but it was a double order.

Speaker 3 (07:10):
It would be a double order in the white chocolate
if you're talking about me as a as a youngster
messing around in that basketball camp and not earning necessarily
in that invite back. It was one of those of like, hey,
we really appreciate it. There's other great basketball camps in game.

Speaker 4 (07:24):
They wanted to make sure the check was going to
cash and then they said here's your yeah, coach, class
is a smart one. Good like it was a cash
only good good luck in your football career, young head.

Speaker 1 (07:33):

new Berlin Eisenhower Lions. I'm Bully Schmid alongside big time
Mike McGivern and our starting lineups and more.

Here we are off and running New Berlin. Eisenhower starts
with the basketball. They win the tip ball controlled right
away by Autumn.

Tens passes it inside a couple of steps down low
rejected on the.

Way up there as a lot of Mainville is up
underneath the basket. Double team closed and Waukeshaw West has
it on the other side. End zone view for your
broadcast team.

Megan McDonald runs, Hey, she's got the first deuce of
a night. Good patience there Mike looked like she was
potentially gonna get some contact on them.

Speaker 4 (09:37):
Yep, laying Yeah, she's got uh, she's got the The
thing on her face is to protect her numbs out.

I know that one of their best players. I think
that was heard that was out of the concussion for
a couple of games and uh going.

Up, Yeah, very much so missed three by Natalie Bloom
offensive board for the Wolverines. Baseline drive five foot or
contacted on the way up. Foul is gonna come against.

McDowell of the Lions, and Ava Spratt is going to
be the one going to the foul line. Spratt's first
attempt short shooting throws a little over forty percent of here.

So Megan McDowell.

Had a concussion a couple of games that go near
the end of the game, and she went up and
got fouled and hit her head.

And so it's good to see that she's back.

She's their leading scorer and she's the one that offensively
really helps them.

Says at the top of the circle, off of the
pair of missus by Spratt at the foul line. So
an empty trip foul not an issue. Lions have it
stop the dribble at the elbow, kick it back out
has has it reset the offense.

Very patient And look, I've seen Joe klat since teams
over the years, and if he's got kids that can
get up and go, he goes. And if he got
his kids that can go half court, he goes half court.
He's uh, he's got a lot of wins.

It always helps to be able to adapt to your
personnel at the baseline. Attempt is missed here by the
Lions on McDowell. On the other side, it's Spratt working
her way inside the.

Speaker 1 (11:22):
Lane. Cook with the right hand makes it too too.

Speaker 3 (11:26):
Two minutes underway here inside of the jim Atosa West
Trojans hosting the Wolverines and the Lions.

Speaker 4 (11:35):
Yeah, talk talking to coach Darling with Peyton heizel out,
he said, look, she does so many things for us
on both sides of the floor. It's can be tough
to play without her. But they're gonna, you know, next
man up, as we say in every sport, right, Yeah,
no doubt about it.

Speaker 3 (11:51):
Johansson's drive was just stopped there at the she tried
to penetrate the lane. Now the offense goes to the
parient mcdowald's drive cut off. Good defense being able to
slow down some of these drives, and now a traveling
to be called against Mainville inside the painted area and
a turnover.

Speaker 1 (12:12):
Well, it's a tough spot to be in.

Speaker 3 (12:14):
Eisenhower was very patient on the offensive side, both student
sections having some fun here, drive inside, contact on the
way up, halfway down and out merely in and one
for the Trojans as Jordan Fenski, their leading scorer, had
the drive and she had a lane with the right hand.

But she's gonna get two file shots. Mike one hundred
and fourteen makes it the charity stripe this year. One
hundred and thirty one attempts eighty seven percent for Fenski,
and she knocks down the first.

You add my percentage to your percentage, you probably well,
Keegan Man, Keegan might be a little bit.

Lions will bring it. Across early stages of a game
like this, eve been waiting all week for it, kind
of feeling out process of what you expect from the
two teams.

And look, both teams offensively showing a lot of patients.
And I know new Berule and Eisenhower showed that kind
of patience all year long and just trying to get
something going to the basket. Don't shoot a ton of freeze.

Megan McDowell catches one on the perimeter and knocks down
a triple.

You're pretty happy to have her back, Huh, No doubt
about it.

She had a couple of baseline or drives that got
cut off right at the block. Looked a lot better
from the perimeter on that one. Five to four lions
all down onto the other side as Spratt has it
at the top of the circle, gives off into the corner.
That's bloom. That's a dribbler way out of there. It
got a little dicey, now, Spratt long that was deep

All right, here we go. Now we're talking. The nerves
are gone, and now we're just gonna play ball. Good

McDowell has it, She gets it poked away, bodies hit
the floor, a lot of contact, and the Lions have
it still inside the offensive zone. McDowell to Tes into
the corner. She'll dribble it out. Lane opens up, kick
off to a three left wing two strong. Tess gets
the offensive board. She'll drive it around the baseline and
it poked away. Good defensive play there by Fenski to

Now Joe Hanson's gonna inbound the basketball nearly to a

backs it up, works again, Sprat giving up a couple

of games away from getting to the state tournament.

Ooh boy, yeah, winner is gonna play the winner of

Inside feed Fenski found Kaylin Foster and she drops in
the deuce, gets into a nine to five advantage for
Waukeshaw West.

I think Dowell drives loses it, Piegan bounder are.

Stat Oh almost two touches with the right hand and
pull it into the other scorers table alongside. Luckily, Rob
Reischell crowds on that far grandfather Mike brother Beckett and

it away from the Lions, but instead Eisenhower will control

She's been there a couple of times, Mike, and that
time was finally able to get the shot off, lost

McDowell fires a three, no good, but a rebound comes

Walk Show West is a nice job of weak side defense.

Lauren Nutt nearly had a good opportunity for a back

Now Jordan Fenski runs for a Wolverines fires into the

it is Natalie Bloom thought about it inside feed and said,
gets it right back. Penske wants it, got it at
the elbow and kicks off to a three misses everything
nearly an offensive board by bloom Is.

She ran baseline to try to catch what looked like

One of those times where if you're Eisenhower, it's not
gone the way you would have liked, but you are
only two possessions out of this, like you mentioned, Yeah.

They feel a little bit discombobulated offensively right now and
walks your west defensively is taking them out some of
the things they're used to getting.

At the top of the circle, resets the offense for
the lions. Inside McDowell could passing a nearly better finish

frustrate McDowell a little bit here and she needs to

get to learn how to fight and do all this
different stuff.

to come back and go on the air and talk
about it. A friend of ours, Billy Listen with K
from ninety nine point one, did it and I talked

to her about it. She said, Mack, it's life changing.
And I said really. She said, Look, my step son's
a US Marine and I wanted to know what he
went through. And she said the things that in my soul,
what I learned, and how proud I am of our country.
I'm still carrying this and she I was going back
and forth whether I wanted to do this, and she said,

you have to go do it and hang out with
these guys. And I understand that when I get off
the bus and I walked on those yellow steps, people
are gonna be yelling at me and they said, just
don't take a swing anybody. You're not doing hand to
hand combat at that point. But I'm really looking forward
to it. You're the first guy who said, look who
camp for me was easy and I would.

Do anything to do it again.

Yeah, I wouldn't say it was easy, but I would
definitely say that it was. It was one of the
best times in my life. I mean, you meet, you
meet brothers and sisters there and the drone structors bulled
you from I mean really from a young boy to
you know, you leave a man, and the way your
family looks at you when you leave Argy Cauld.

I ask you one of the things that that I'm
gonna be there for his graduation. What was that like
for you?

I was terrified.

I'd never shaved my head before, so I didn't want
my family to see me bald. But also it's I
don't know, it's something that you really can't explain, just
like when you earn your eglobe and anchor, you really

You just have to go through it and see it
and do it. We was in an emotional time for you.

Speaker 5 (37:26):
Yeah, so when I earned my eglobe and anchor is
very emotional. That's where you know every marine cries. But
graduation was kind of the same thing because that's the
first time my family seen me for three months and
they said I was completely different. You know, my father
was proud of me and my grandfather he was a marine.
We stood on the same yellow footprints together and to
earn the same title, you know that he did was

just absolutely phenomenal.

and they see they put so much sweat equity into

you can see some tiers with some of the parents
up in the stands, and man, this tough time.

Look, that was easy for me because we won three
state state championships with my son Matthew. So that last
