Speaker 2 (00:37):
I'm Rob King.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
It is a Friday before a big divisional matchup Sunday
against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Max. How you doing today, my friend?

Speaker 4 (00:47):
I'm doing all right, Bud. I cannot complain, uh at all.
Feeling better today?

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Good?

Speaker 4 (00:53):
And I was yesterday yesterday I was.

Speaker 5 (00:55):
I was down bad and I'm glad you you manned
the ship and uh.

Speaker 4 (00:59):
And was a to get through it without me. I
was trying my best, but my voice was gone and
my head was throving.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
Well.

Speaker 3 (01:09):
We were glad to you know, we open up the
phone lines and we're gonna have a confact on how
often we want to do that. And because we had
some good callers and it's fun to have them be
part of the show. Part of the show today is
Dan Horde, the outstanding play by play man for the
Cincinnati Bengals, is going to be joining us in just

(01:30):
about fourteen minutes or so. We also have it Couldonish,
who is the you know, perhaps the most respected NFL
voice in all of Germany. He is here, the students
have done some things in Germany, and he's gonna join
us and just about ten minutes or so give us
his insight on what the NFL looks like in Germany

(01:53):
these days. And Missy Matthews, the third but certainly not
the third, the first member of our broadcast team.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
How about that?

Speaker 4 (02:00):
Max?

Speaker 3 (02:00):
How bet if I put it that way, the first
member of our on air broadcast team for Stuthers broadcast.
Miss You'll be joining us at eleven o'clock. First questions, Max.
You know, we talked about this a little bit a
couple of days ago, whether we were going to be
glued to the game last night, just kind of checking
out the game last night. Where did you Where did

(02:21):
you sit with the game last night? Did you did
you watch it? Or I felt like after halftime and
then early on in the third quarter that the Jets
had let whatever opportunity they had to be in the
game slip away and their two game losing streak is
over and the Patriots are nine and two.

Speaker 4 (02:39):
Yeah. No, I mean I was watching a little bit
of it. I had, I had, I had. I had
daughter duty last night. Nice.

Speaker 5 (02:48):
So I was at the ASU University of Arizona volleyball
game with my daughter's teams.

Speaker 4 (02:54):
Their their volleyball team.

Speaker 5 (02:56):
So I was watching on a second screen on my phone,
and then after half, I was like, I'm just gonna
watch this game in front of me.

Speaker 4 (03:03):
So it ended up being a good match.

Speaker 5 (03:05):
The number eight Sun Devils took down their vaunted rival,
the University of Arizona Wildcats and four sets.

Speaker 4 (03:10):
So that was where I spent most of it.

Speaker 5 (03:12):
I was checking the game, and once I saw that
twenty four to fourteen, it just felt like it was
insurmountable for the Jets.

Speaker 4 (03:18):
Yeah, to come back from it.

Speaker 5 (03:21):
And it was just like, all right, nothing to see here,
there's no surprises here. Like we've seen the other crazy
things in Bizarre World, this one was a constant. The
Jets are still a bad football team, and the New
Leans Patriots are who we thought they were.

Speaker 4 (03:35):
They're they're a good football team.

Speaker 3 (03:37):
Yeah, they are a good football team. And I think
there's that's about. That's about all I need to say
on that one.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
Right, we do. There wasn't anything that we didn't expect.

Speaker 4 (03:47):
One last day, Yeah, one last thing.

Speaker 5 (03:49):
Did you like the NFL Rivalries jersey that New England wore?

Speaker 2 (03:53):
Actually you jo what Max? I did? I did.

Speaker 3 (03:57):
I'm not really much of a jerseys Yeah, not much
of this jersey. That jersey kind of guy. Hey, what'd
you think of the jersey's way? I just like the games,
you know what I mean, I don't really care what
they're wearing. But I looked at those and I'm like, huh,
those are so they were kind of like, I don't know,
grayish blue.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
Is that how you would describe it?

Speaker 3 (04:16):
Like?

Speaker 2 (04:16):
Yeah, yeah, they were a favorite.

Speaker 5 (04:19):
The stadium had one last night, so I was able
to see it up close.

Speaker 4 (04:23):
He had a Drake made jersey on, so I just
I stopped. I was like, hey, man, I was.

Speaker 5 (04:27):
I was like, let me just look at this, you know,
because I'm like, this is a pretty cool jersey.

Speaker 4 (04:31):
He's like, no, thanks, man. I ordered it because they
were gonna be wearing it tonight, and so I looked
at it.

Speaker 5 (04:35):
Yeah, it has this kind of grayish bluish and it
has like the the two toned or like three dimensional
ne on the sleeve with the stars around and there.

Speaker 4 (04:47):
I mean, it was, it was. It was a cool
looking concept. They almost looked throwback yet new.

Speaker 5 (04:53):
So I had a bit of like the old mix
with the new like that three like that three D
design on the on the on the shoulder was you know,
it was the new part of it. The rest of
the kind of looked like a throwback style jersey that
we're used to seeing.

Speaker 4 (05:06):
So it was. It was a pretty cool jersey.

Speaker 6 (05:09):
It was.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
It was for sure.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
So Max, I think New England, I think we agree
that they're a good football team, you know, so you know,
they they look like a good football team. Even so
a reminder once again of how close games are even
we even win. One team wins, and you know, makes

(05:33):
it look relatively easy. The Jets threw a long ball
up the left sideline down at the time fourteen to seven,
and if they complete that pass, who knows, maybe they
go in. It was deep would have been deep in
Patriots territory. Was a perfectly thrown ball by Justin Fields.
Dropped on the other end. Who knows, Maybe they go in.
I can't remember it was seven to seven or fourteen

(05:54):
seven at the time, but who knows what happens at
that If you go in and you make just that
one play, does it completely change the complexion of the game,
or do you take the leader?

Speaker 2 (06:05):
It might have been a to tie it.

Speaker 3 (06:06):
I can't remember the specifics of it, but you know,
it's a different feeling for a team, especially a team
that's been struggling. But even so, we see three, four
or five plays in every game that seemed to turn it.
It's incredible that so many games come down to that.
We saw that against the Chargers, We certainly saw it
against the Bengals, and it's a Bengals team. We're gonna

(06:27):
be diving into this more with Dan Horde coming up
in a little bit, but it's a Bengals team that probably,
from what I understand, Trey Hendrickson and possibly Shamar Stewart
are both going to be out for this game.

Speaker 6 (06:39):
Max.

Speaker 5 (06:41):
Yeah, I mean, I mean, we talked about this and
we looked at it Thursday night. They had a lot
of guys out and it did you know, it didn't
really matter that much. I believe Trey Henderson was out
against us in that one. Yeah, but Cam Taylor Britt
also was out. They're also without Logan Wilson this time

(07:02):
around because he was traded to the Cowboys. So I mean,
you're talking about a Bengals defense that's you know, that's
definitely in flux once again.

Speaker 4 (07:13):
Can the Steelers take advantage of a known, you.

Speaker 5 (07:17):
Know, lesser than an opponent defensively and can you not
play down to your competition, but can you play up
to the standard that you created for yourself. That's going
to be the question, because you know, you want to
get this bad taste out of your mouth of Sunday
night football and going to LA and not coming away
with a victory out of your mouth. And no better

(07:38):
way than do that than in front of the creature
comforts of home and aft for sure, and of course
against a rival that you are ego eager to get
a w in front of and not get the brooms.
You know, that's what we're playing for. We're playing not
to get the broom right now by the Cincinnati Bengals.

Speaker 2 (07:57):
Yep.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
And you know when you take Hendrickson out, who he saw,
you know, completely manhandle the Steelers last year in their
nineteen seventeen victory at Akroscher Stadium the final regular season game,
and Steelers just trying to find a way to have
a good taste in your mouth going into the playoffs.
They couldn't do it. They couldn't pull it out late

(08:18):
when they had an opportunity. Henderson had a huge part
of that. Shamar Stewarts, a guy they like, hasn't been
real productive because he's just had a lot of injuries.
They seem to think that he's going to be a
very good football player, but he's going to be out
of this game. But I think at this stage of
the game, it's hard not to think of the Bengals
as kind of a one trick pony, Like, hey, if

(08:39):
they get the ball last.

Speaker 2 (08:40):
They can beat you. You know what I mean.

Speaker 3 (08:42):
I mean, they're they're just putting up a ton of
points right now, and I think that's going to be
you know, the Steelers have got I think the big
stories here. They've got to find a way to bounce
back offensively Max from a really subpar performance in LA
and they've got to find a way to slow the
Bengals down and not let him score you know, thirty

(09:02):
eight points, which they've done in their last two games
and lost. I don't want to try that record again.
I don't want to give them thirty eight points and
see if the Steelers can win. So, you know, they
they've there's a couple things, a couple of items on
the to do list here for the Steelers for sure.

Speaker 4 (09:17):
Yeah, no, it definitely is. And when you think about it,
I mean, you look at their last three games.

Speaker 5 (09:20):
They scored thirty three against US thirty nine, they're thirty
eight against the Jets and forty two.

Speaker 4 (09:27):
Against the Bears.

Speaker 5 (09:29):
Crazy, So it's high power in the last three weeks,
or should I say since Joe Flacco has really earnestly
took the wings of the team, you know, and obviously.

Speaker 4 (09:39):
You know he got knocked out and Jake Brown had
to come in. But I mean, this team, like you said,
they can score points, their defense.

Speaker 5 (09:46):
Just can't stop guys from scoring points.

Speaker 4 (09:50):
And you know, there was a huge feeling.

Speaker 5 (09:53):
After that Chicago game, you know, and I think it
was Chase Brown that you know, let out like can
we just we just get a stop?

Speaker 4 (10:01):
And he was kind of probably roasting his uh, his defense.
So you know, I would love for.

Speaker 5 (10:06):
Him to have another comment about that at the end
of this game. That would be that would be great
to put that, you know, under our belt as well.

Speaker 2 (10:13):
Yeah, I think that that wasn't too well received.

Speaker 4 (10:18):
Yeah, I would say to the least, that was not
received very well.

Speaker 2 (10:21):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (10:22):
Uh, you understand the frustration, but that's not the way
to handle it.

Speaker 4 (10:28):
That is definitely not the way to handle it.

Speaker 5 (10:30):
But you know, at the end of the day, you know,
humans are humans, and you got to figure out your
locker room and that's one of the things we talk about,
keeping things within the locker room and not let them
spill out. That was that was a full of paw
on on the young man. That was you know, that
was frustrated, and he's also had his own frustrations as
being the lead back and not having the production that

(10:53):
he would like to have.

Speaker 4 (10:54):
So I'm like, you know what, if you're going to
continue to have issues, I welcome it. I receive it fully.

Speaker 3 (11:00):
Uh, you know care, Yeah, I think that's just that's
certainly a question we'reen asked Dan Horde. We're gonna ask
him about the injuries against on the defensive line, and
we're also gonna ask him about you know, Joe Burrow
being back, does that give this team kind of a
shot in the arm?

Speaker 6 (11:16):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (11:17):
Listen, We've said this this week. This team is not
out of it. This team is not out of the
AFC North race. As far as it comes against the Ravens,
they're in they're in command. I mean, if they win
this game, they'll be a game behind the Steelers. We
don't know where they'll be with the Ravens. Their series
season series will be finished with the Steelers, but they'll

(11:39):
also have a commanding division record and they'll only be
a game behind the Steelers, maybe a game behind the
the Ravens as well, who they still have to play.
So this is a very very important game for the Bengals.
Their season is pretty much on the line. And we
said that back on October sixteenth, and the Bengals beat him,

(12:01):
and there's a desperation factor again for the Bengals, who've
got to be kicking themselves. They've got to be kicking
themselves over they what's happened the last couple of weeks
in which they've scored prior to their by eighty points
and did not win either game. So a lot to
talk about with Dan Hord, the outstanding play by play
voice of the Cincinnati Bengals. Who's going to join us

(12:22):
next in the Locker Room presented by your neighborhood Ford
Store and the Students Pro Shop on Steelers Nation Radio,
a part of the Steelers Audio Network.

Speaker 1 (12:35):

Speaker 2 (12:56):
And we thank you very much for being with us.

Speaker 3 (12:58):
Inside the locker Room with Mac starks on, Rob King,
the three and six Bengals taking on the five and
four Steers and for more on the Cincinnati Bengals. We
are joined by the outstanding play by play voice of
the Cincinnati Bengals, the Dulcet Tones, the melodic, malifluous, wonderful
voice of Dan Horror joining us.

Speaker 2 (13:20):
Now, how are you doing, Dan.

Speaker 6 (13:22):
Well? After an intro like that, I'm doing great?

Speaker 2 (13:24):
How are you guys doing well? Doing fine? Dan?

Speaker 3 (13:29):
You know I have to before we start on. You know,
the injuries, and you know what we the desperation level,
and Chase Brown's comments and all this other stuff. I
have to say that I was discussing with you and
your partner before the Thursday night game the decision. Remember,
the team had just chaded for Joe Flacco, and I

(13:50):
remember thinking, boy, if how is the Bengals, I might
have traded for Russell Wilson And you say, hey, Joe
Flacco was their guy all along, And boy, oh boy,
did they make the right decision because that offense is
cooking under Joe Flacco right now.

Speaker 6 (14:06):
Yeah, it was a great trade, and all they had
to do is swap picks in the fifth and sixth round,
so the cost was low. But he's been amazing. The
point total has gone up every game from eighteen to
thirty three to thirty eight to forty two. I don't
think that streak will continue on Sunday in Pittsburgh. If
it does, heads will probably roll in the Steel City.

(14:28):
But Flacco has been awesome, and considering the last game,
we didn't even know if he was going to play.
He had a sprained ac join, a right shoulder injury
that he suffered the game before against the Jets, only
practiced one day leading up to the game against the Bears,
went out and threw for four seventy So he has
been amazing. I am pounding the drum to sign him

(14:50):
for next year if he's willing. You know, Joe Burrow
will be back. So he would be in a backup role,
but he's proven to be a tremendous backup. I think
he'll be a good influence on Joe Burrow. I think
he's already been a good influence on Joe just being
a normal person. Joe Burrow's life is so crazy as
one of the biggest sports celebrities in this country that

(15:12):
to have a forty year old father of five around
who's seen it all, been there, done it, won a
Super Bowl. I think that's been very good for Joe
because he's not had a quarterback in the room since
he's been with the Bengals that fits a description like that.

Speaker 5 (15:29):
I mean, and that's one of the amazing things when
you just think about like the journey of Joe Flacco,
right yeah, I mean, he's played for He's played for
three out of the four AFC North Division teams, and
like you said, that there's a steadying voice, and you know,
just kind of want to just ask you. You know,

(15:50):
this week Joe Burrow stepped back on the practice field
and started doing some light stuff. I mean, is this
the anticipation that you know, Joe could come step into play?
And I say that, I realize you have to also
say Joe Burrow, not Joe Flacco. Is the tale of
two Joe's in Cincinnati. But you know, for Burrow to

(16:12):
be up to speed, to start, you know, sooner rather
than later, getting back into the starting role and assuming
where he's supposed to be, and for Joe to kind
of take that backseat role once Joe is fully healthy.

Speaker 6 (16:26):
Joe Burrow is hell bent on coming back and playing
this year.

Speaker 2 (16:31):
Now.

Speaker 6 (16:32):
He came back to practice much faster than any of
us anticipated, except for him. I'm sure he thought he
would be back on the timeline on timeline that he
was able to come back in practice. But when he
had surgery to repair the ligaments to connect you know,
his big toe to his foot, the medical timeline was
three months that would get him back with three games

(16:54):
left in the season. He wants to come back for
the Baltimore game on Thanksgiving. I don't know if that's
realistic or not, but that would be three weeks earlier
than the medical timeline. So Joe Burrow's powers of recuperation
are incredible. Orlando Brown Junior compared him to Wolverine this
week for his ability to come back from injuries. So

(17:17):
Joe Burrow's not going to play this week obviously. I
don't think he'll play next week against New England. Could
he be back for the Baltimore game on Thanksgiving Night? Maybe?
But I do expect him to play at some point
this year, regardless of whether the Bengals are in the
hunt or not. He wants to play this year. He
thinks it's important. He says, every game is important, regardless

(17:38):
of whether your team is in the hunt or not.
And my gut tells me that he's probably going to
play at some point this year.

Speaker 3 (17:45):
Our guest is Dan Horde, the outstanding play by play
man for the Cincinnati Bengals. Dan Chase Brown, I'm sure
frustrated comments about, you know, the defense not doing its job.
I'm sure that Bengals are kicking themselves right now to
be the only team since the nineteen sixty six New
York Giants to score thirty eight or more points in

(18:07):
back to back games and lose them both. Even one win,
even one win in that group get you to first
place for the victory Sunday at Attersure. I mean, you know,
we saw that last year with the team scoring a
lot of points in not winning. But Brown's comments can
canary to call my tempest? Did a teapot? Let me
get my, let me get my my old metaphors?

Speaker 2 (18:27):
Correct? Is it a tempest? Did a teapot?

Speaker 3 (18:30):
It did?

Speaker 2 (18:31):
Does it?

Speaker 3 (18:31):
Did it make some people angry? Is it just something
that was said and it smoothed over and it's it's
not a.

Speaker 6 (18:37):
Factor, not a factor. And here's why. So what you
saw on social media was a small clip of an
overall interview, obviously, and basically at various points in the
overall interview, he defended the defense. He said early this
year they were doing the job and we weren't. But

(19:00):
in the course of his you know, of the overall comments,
at one point he says, just get a freaking stop.
Just get a freaking stop. That's what the defensive guys
were saying as well. It's not like what Chase Brown
said wasn't what everybody was thinking. So no, it didn't
create any problems inside of the locker room. We're always
looking for something nationally that drives conversation in sports debate

(19:23):
these days, so I understand why that became such a
lightning rod type of thing nationwide, But internally, honestly, there
was nothing.

Speaker 5 (19:35):
And also, you know, Dan as we kind of look
at just where the defense is. I mean, no Trey
Hendrickson again, possibly no Schamar Stewart, Logan.

Speaker 4 (19:45):
Wilson traded to Dallas.

Speaker 5 (19:48):
I mean, what do you think is the shape of
this defense going into the game on Sunday.

Speaker 6 (19:54):
Well, the numbers tell you all you need to know.
Historically bad to this point of the year. They're playing
a bunch of young guys and hoping those young guys
develop and get better over the final eight games of
the season. That's the hope to build something that will
be better next year when Joe Burrow is back, and
hopefully that's the case. But to this point it's been

(20:17):
frighteningly bad. We gave the numbers for the last two weeks,
they've scored eighty points and haven't won a game. If
you look back over the last two years, they've had
six games six games where they scored thirty three or
more points and did not win. That's hard to do.
So they've got one player on defense that's playing really well,

(20:40):
DJ Turner. Before Trey Hendrickson got hurt, he was playing
really well. Nobody else on defense has really played well
this year, and two out of eleven is not going
to cut it.

Speaker 3 (20:52):
No. And by the way, for those looking at history,
they are better right now than the nineteen sixty six Giants,
the last team to allow this many points game.

Speaker 2 (21:00):
So historically bad, worse than the Super Bowl era.

Speaker 5 (21:04):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (21:05):
Yeah, it hasn't been good for them, clearly. I did
want to ask you another question, though, Dan about the offense.
You know, I think Chase Brown's a really good, explosive
running back who can do some things for him. We
saw what the passing game can do, you know, the
outside receivers. No Fans scored a touchdown against the Steelers.
I'm wondering is are the Steelers are the Bengals, like

(21:28):
you know, scheming around their offensive line or has their
offensive line improved because the Steelers hardly had Joe Flacco
under duress. I know he's got to you know, gets
rid of the ball quickly, but has has the offensive
line quietly improved with a couple of young guys at
guard or is it are they sort of scheming around

(21:51):
the offensive line.

Speaker 6 (21:53):
The offensive line has significantly improved. So You've got a
second year right tack who was a first round draft
pick last year of Marius Mims, and you have two
rookies starting at guard. So three of the five starters
are really young. They are getting better, and they are
getting better fast. So I think the Bengals are cautiously

(22:15):
optimistic that they've got sixty percent of a good offensive
line going forward with Dylan Fairchild at left guard, Jalen
Rivers at right guard, and a Marius Mims at right tackle.
Ted Karris, their thirty two year old center, has always
kind of been a league average guy, good team leader.
He's never really been a problem. Orlando Brown junior in

(22:36):
the past, has had some great seasons. He's a four
time Pro Bowler. He's been a little bit up and
down in his time with Cincinnati, but I think he's
solid enough. You know, certainly league averager better. So yes,
the offensive line is trending up. As for what the
Bengals did in the first game against Pittsburgh, I think
over the course of Zach Taylor seven years as head coach,

(22:59):
he's just come to the determination. The Steelers are always
great upfront. You've got to get the ball out quickly
to help your offensive line. They certainly did that in
Game one in Cincinnati. They had a good running game
in that game as well. But I would expect them
to try to do that on Sunday.

Speaker 5 (23:17):
Yeah, And I got to ask you, obviously, the biggest
offensive weapons, Jamar Chase. Just the season that he's having
once again, it feels like, I mean, just how valuable
is it to have, you know, both him and t Higgins.
I mean, because you look at just the idea in

(23:39):
the offseason, how do you pay both on top of.

Speaker 4 (23:42):
Paying a quarterback?

Speaker 5 (23:44):
And they've they've made it work, and like you said,
the production is there, it's just the wins aren't there.
You know, how good is that decision now that you
look at it as far as the production that you
get on the field. When we talk about the thirty
plus points the last three weeks in a row only
gone up for Joe Flacco.

Speaker 6 (24:07):
Well, that decision to keep both wide receivers has certainly
been good for the offense. The question is how much
money do you have left to pay the defense? And remarkably,
they're still in decent salary cap shape going forward to
be able to add some free agents to this defense
in the upcoming offseason. So they've got to get that right.
When they went to the Super Bowl in twenty twenty one.

(24:30):
The reason why is that they built a really good
offense with the draft, and they built a really good
defense through free agency. But those guys eventually aged out
or left, and now they've got to do it again.
So can they go out and get a Mike Hilton,
who proved to be a great signing in Cincinnati after
he left the Steelers, should obey a wooge who played

(24:53):
great for three years in Cincinnati? And then can they
go out in the draft and get guys like Jesse
Bates who were part of that Super Bowl defense in
twenty twenty one. The draft picks in the last few
years on defense haven't hit, at least not so far.
They're going to have to try to rebuild it with
free agency and the draft this coming off season. And
I would expect virtually every dollar and virtually every pick

(25:17):
to be spent on the defensive side of the ball
because the key guys on offense are all signed. They
know that that side of the ball is good. They've
got to fix this defense and fix it fast.

Speaker 3 (25:28):
Yeah, and Dan to your point, I mean Shamar Stewart
first round pick, Miles Murphy first round pick, those guys
up front. You know, they put a lot of money
into Trey Hendrickson obviously well deserved, Cam Taylor, britt second
round pick, DJ Turner second round pick, Dax Hill first
round pick. I mean they've they've poured. You know, we
know how this works, right one one side, one unit

(25:50):
is usually.

Speaker 2 (25:51):
Getting a lot of money.

Speaker 3 (25:53):
You know, when that money runs out, hopefully that the
young guys on the other side, you know, have progressed,
and it hasn't happened. They've put the resources draft pick wise,
it just hasn't happened for the defense. Now having said
all this, you know, the Bengals and kicking themselves. I'm
sure for being three and six, even four and five,

(26:14):
if you'd won either one of those games instead of
allowing late scores to the Jets and the Bears. You know,
if this team is four and five, you're a win
away from being in first place. Exiting Akroscher Stadium. I
would say this though, and I felt the same way
going into that game in Cincinnati on a Thursday night,
a Bengals team. By the way, just a quick aside,

(26:36):
the Steelers had won ten games in a row, the
last ten. The Steelers are three and seven against the Bengals,
so keep that in mind, and also the desperation factor
I don't like. I think the Steelers. This game is
very important for the Steelers. I think it's almost this.

Speaker 2 (26:52):
Is this season. If you're the Bengals.

Speaker 3 (26:53):
If you win this game, you are right back in it.
If you lose this game, you're in very tough straights.
I think that makes him death And I think a
desperate team is always a dangerous team.

Speaker 6 (27:05):
Well, I agree with that. I rarely use the term
must win until it truly is so a game it
can end the season, or a playoff game or something
like that. But I do think that those words apply
for the Bengals playoff chances this year, for this week's game,
because they're not going to be a wild card team
at three and six, I think we can toss that
out the window and in a normal year they would

(27:27):
not be in the hunt in the AFC North, but
it's not a normal year. The Steelers are a game
over five hundred and in first, the Ravens started one
in five. They're coming on, but there's still a game
under five hundred and you know who knows. Lamar could
tweak his hamstring again this week. It's possible, so through
no credit or fault of their own. Well, I guess

(27:48):
it is fault of their own. But they're still in
the hunt. The Bengals are because they're three and oh
in the division. I'm sorry, two and oh in the division,
with a chance to get the three and oh and
a chance to be two and oh head to head
against the team that's currently in first place. So yes,
in terms of their playoff chances, I would agree that
this is a must wing, must win game for a
desperate Cincinnati team.

Speaker 3 (28:09):
Dan Horde is the outstanding play by play man of
the Cincinnati Bengals. For the Cincinnati Bengals, Dan, look forward
to seeing you on Sunday at Actor Sure Stadium.

Speaker 6 (28:20):
Me too, always look forward to the trip to Pittsburgh
and uh we'll see if the Bengals can make it
interesting by playing better defense on Sunday.

Speaker 2 (28:29):
Thank you, Dan, You bet my pleasure, Dan Hord.

Speaker 3 (28:34):
By the way, By the way, Max uh The when
I was working at WTVH and Syracuse, I got letters
addressed to you know, the mailing lists weren't always changed.
So Steve Ciphers, who is a reporter for ESPN, one
of their early guys, did a great job, terrific anchor

(28:55):
and reporter. He was followed by Mike Turrico Dan Horde.
So I used to get mail addressed to all those guys.

Speaker 2 (29:03):
Dan Horde a.

Speaker 3 (29:04):
TVH five alumni, CBS at station that basically doesn't exist
anymore anyway.

Speaker 2 (29:10):
I just throwing that out as a tippitt.

Speaker 3 (29:12):
So we're going to take a break because we have
we have some gentleman coming up next. We're going to
be joined by Ika Domish, who's going to tell us
just give us a little brief update on what's going
on with the NFL in Germany.

Speaker 2 (29:27):
He is here. He's one of.

Speaker 3 (29:28):
The most respected NFL journalists in Germany with a Steelers
bent toward that coverage, and we're going to talk to
him before we turn our attention back to the Steelers
and Bengals when we continue next in the locker room,
presented b our Neighborhood Ford Store and this year's Pro
Shop on Steers Nation Radio, a part of the Steelers
Audio Network.

Speaker 1 (29:52):
This is in the Locker Room with Kingyon Starks on
Steelers Nation Radio, presented by your neighbor hood Forward Store.
The F one is the official truck of the Pittsburgh
Steelers and by Steelers Pro Shop. Get it direct from
the team at the Steelers Pro Shop at shop dot
Steelers dot com.

Speaker 3 (30:14):
Hello, Guten tag ish fin Rob King Mitt Max Starks.

Speaker 6 (30:20):
I don't know how that.

Speaker 2 (30:21):
I don't know how that works. We're joined by ikadamis now? Ika?
How is my German?

Speaker 6 (30:29):
That was?

Speaker 2 (30:30):
That was pretty good?

Speaker 7 (30:31):
I thought I called it in German show? What is happening?

Speaker 2 (30:34):
Oh? Please?

Speaker 4 (30:36):
So?

Speaker 3 (30:36):
Ika Domish is the host of the Steelers German Podcast,
one of the main on air personalities for pro Seben,
one of the main networks in Germany. He's been the
NFL guy for many years, one of the most respected
voices for the game in Germany.

Speaker 2 (30:53):
And before we ask you a little bit about football.

Speaker 3 (30:56):
In Germany, can you get us caught up on what
it is you're doing here in Pittsburgh.

Speaker 6 (31:01):
This is uh, this is.

Speaker 7 (31:03):
A trip of a lifetime. I think I just doing
the podcast from Germany normally, but this week I'm here
in Pittsburgh for a couple of recordings for the podcast.
Had a chat with Nick Herbig Christian Kunns, He's immediate
person as well.

Speaker 6 (31:19):
That was fun.

Speaker 7 (31:20):
And today I will meet of course German's finest with
the Pittsburgh Sealers, Jurius Valschow. And you know it's gonna
be fun Sunday the game against the Bengals.

Speaker 6 (31:30):
This is a fun week for me.

Speaker 4 (31:34):
Yeah, this is a fun week indeed.

Speaker 5 (31:37):
And uh, you know, as you just kind of think
about it, like being able to come over here, you know,
go to the team.

Speaker 4 (31:43):
And like you said, having having a native countryman and.

Speaker 5 (31:47):
Julius west Yaw, uh there, I know he's come over
to Germany and and done some stuff with the NFL.
You know, I believe in the off season, the fast
off season. Can you just talk about what that means
having a player from Germany on one of the teams
that you're coming to visit and uh, you know, just

(32:07):
that experience with them and the exposure of Germany to
American football. Obviously we had we had the NFL Europe
in World football leagues over there, but now really seeing
an earnest effort and investment into Germany with the NFL.

Speaker 7 (32:25):
Yeah, the game is growing internationally. I think everybody knows
that even here in the US, there are games overseas,
and we had a couple of those in Germany in
recent years, starting in Munich. This year, we have been
in Berlin, the capital city of Germany, and there were
attack stadium, more than seventy thousand fans in the stands,

(32:48):
and a lot of people they follow their German homegrown players.
And that's why it's so sweet that the Steelers have
Yuius Vergeoffs because he's from the state of Bavaria where
I live, and I met him, like you said, in
the off season when he's been to Germany, and a
lot of people are asking hosts and commentators like me,

(33:11):
how is Julius doing. And that's why it's so cool
to have access to Jurius, and he tells in the
podcasts we did already together, how it is being a
Pittsburgh Steeler, how it is sharing the field with greats
like PJ Wat Aaron Rogers this year and this is
this is such a cool insight and that's why people

(33:32):
start following even more with the Pittsburgh Steelers. They know
about the success in the years before, but they start
to focus following the Steelers in recent years in Germany
with the player like Julius even more.

Speaker 3 (33:46):
Well, you know, and Ika domishes our guest, and Ika
just just I know you talked to herbig. That's a
German name. Koontz, that's a German name. Welshoff obviously is German.
Max's middle name is Weisner, mine is Schaefer. So we've
got the Germany covered from this end, I think here
in Pittsburgh. So which leads me to the question of

(34:08):
how popular are the Steelers in Germany. We know they
are hugely popular in Ireland. And I know you've you've
got a deep connection with everything you've done for this
Steelers podcasting and so on.

Speaker 2 (34:20):
Are this Youders a popular team in Germany?

Speaker 6 (34:24):
They are.

Speaker 7 (34:25):
I can tell you I'm a Steelers fan because when
I started watching, they won the Super Bowl with Mike
Tomlin two thousand and eight. That was that is my
personal connection with the Pittsburgh Steelers because when you start
watching from overseas, you of course experienced the successful teams first.
And we started free to air American football in German

(34:48):
television around ten years ago, twenty fourteen. That was the
time when the Steelers had Big Ben Antonio Brown Bell
as the running back, the great defenders like James Harrison.
Those were impact players, those were characters, and that's why
when we started broadcasting, a lot of people fell in

(35:10):
love with the Steelers and with the history of the city.
There's the steel city that really connected with Germany because
we have a lot of industry as well in our country,
and a lot of people really feel that the Steelers
are one of the authentic franchises in the NFL. And
of course I'm right now in the stadium in the

(35:33):
Achrosher Stadium. Germans have a big heart for stadiums and
we love that stadium and I have the view right now.
It's so beautiful.

Speaker 6 (35:42):
I like it well.

Speaker 5 (35:45):
And also I know that the that the Steelers had
the watch party and the BVB Stadium in Dortmund and
you know, a couple of weeks ago against the Colts.
Can you just talk about that experience that and the
Steelers have having a partnership with a team with another
club in Germany and how unique that is to be

(36:05):
able to have that and also the colors happen to
match as well, so we are definitely on the same page,
you know, with with color choice. But just talk about
that partnership, having a team there as a supporter of
your squad and kind of vice versa.

Speaker 7 (36:21):
Yeah, that fits right with the black and yellow and
black and gold.

Speaker 6 (36:26):
This is so sweet.

Speaker 7 (36:27):
Yeah, we had that watch party in Dortmund and the
connection is pretty strong, and I think that is one
of the key reasons while the game is growing internationally
because soccer is the most popular sport in Germany and
Borosia Dortmund is one of the most popular teams and
there are a lot of players. Even Nick Herbik told

(36:49):
me yesterday when he's playing FIFA, the video games are
basically when he's playing FIFA, he always plays with players
from Borussia Dortmund, and I think this is the connection
where both teams getting to know each other, players from
each team following each other because they're interested in different

(37:09):
sports overseas, and the connection with Boris Adortmund is pretty successful.
We had a couple of players from Borissa Adortmund over
here in Pittsburgh visiting the stadium and vice versa. With
Miles Killerbrew, he has been at the yellow wall. It's
called we have that is a special thing. We have

(37:30):
people standing in our stadiums. There are not seats for everyone.
There is the yellow wall where about eighteen thousand people
are standing and watching the whole game and they are
jumping and singing. And Miles Kilbrough had that experience and
he said that was one of the most impression, most
impressive experience he had ever in a sports venue. And

(37:55):
I think that's where both franchises really connect. It's the
passion about the team. It's in dartment, it's the same.
This is this is the team of the city Dartmund
and this is where the connection really really is really
is good. It makes sense.

Speaker 3 (38:11):
Well, I know you have a very tight schedule. We
thank you for your time today. We give you a
donka Shane uh for your time today with us. Thank
you very much. Enjoy the rest of the of your trip.
Are you going to be up in the Are you
going to be up in the press box on Sunday?

Speaker 6 (38:29):
Sure?

Speaker 7 (38:29):
I will look out for you guys, and uh make
a quick make a quick hello. I will I will
look forward for that game. This is nice. The Uncle
bowling number two, the first one was was impressive. I'm
looking forward for that.

Speaker 2 (38:44):
Persay, my friend. Thank you very much. Check out.

Speaker 3 (38:49):
It was a blessing, Joe, thank you very much. Acadamish
just giving us a little insight. You know when you
see the NFL and ously we have you know, Alvalo
Martin joined us every Tuesday, uh you know, uh the
part of the Spanish speaking broadcast, and that's a big

(39:10):
deal in Mexico.

Speaker 2 (39:11):
This Steelers is huge in Mexico.

Speaker 3 (39:13):
Huge in Ireland as we found out Max and and
certainly growing and big in Germany as well. And you know,
maybe one of these days we'll see the Steelers play
games in Mexico City and in Berlin.

Speaker 5 (39:26):
Yeah, I mean, and you know this is one of
the three countries that the Steelers have there there there,
I guess the GMP Global Marketing Program through the NFL.
This is one of the three countries assigned to the
Steelers Ireland, Mexico and Germany is the third country. So

(39:47):
you wonder why it's like, well, why are the Steelers
talking about Germany. Of a sudden thought, we had Ireland
and I thought we were doing Mexico. You get three
countries per team split out throughout all thirty two teams
and you know, we have a game this weekend that's
going to be in Madrid, right, so you have the
Spain market opening up and coming online. Germany obviously has
been online for for a couple of years now. But

(40:10):
that's that's the growth process of this becoming an international sport,
is allowing each organization to.

Speaker 4 (40:15):
Come in and you know, freely market.

Speaker 5 (40:18):
In these in these countries to see if there is viability.
And I think you know the first step once again,
Steelers sold over two hundred and fifty tickets to that
watch party, so they know that there is a draw
for not only American football.

Speaker 4 (40:33):
But specifically Steelers football.

Speaker 5 (40:35):
And like you said, the partnership with BVB, you know,
soccer club and and and just going through the different processes,
it won't be a surprise if you see the Steelers,
you know, in this market and a game in the future,
whether we're a visiting team, because there's multiple teams in
each market of the three that are assigned.

Speaker 4 (40:53):
So it's a pretty cool thing to see the international
scaling growth.

Speaker 5 (40:59):
That Roger good Dell in the NFL has really made
the effort on it and they and they put it
in the team's pockets. So this doesn't go a part
of what we call the group licensing Agreement.

Speaker 4 (41:08):
So this isn't just so the money that you gain
in these countries and what you do in these countries is.

Speaker 5 (41:13):
Not pooled resources from all thirty two teams like a
g l A, which that applies to everything else state side.
This is individual marketed things that the Steelers have to
go out of pocket too to endorse, to you know,
provide services for and to go you know, do things

(41:33):
on their own dime and create these partnerships themselves. So
it's been it's been a fun process watching the different
business summits in these countries and you know, talking to
potential sponsors that that are that are in those countries
and like connecting with the fans on more of a
grassroots level. And so this is just another example of
that and the Steelers you know, doing a tremendous job.

(41:53):
We saw what the success in Ireland looks like. We
see what you know, Mexico has been and will always be.
I mean, the Steelers are the number one team in
the Mexico marketing. You have all those other teams that
are on the borders of Mexico and the Steelers are
the one that have the greatest popularity draw, so it's
just continuing to spread our love and fanaticisms for the

(42:15):
team and.

Speaker 4 (42:15):
The Black and Gold up there in the steel City.

Speaker 3 (42:17):
Sounds wonderful and we're gonna have much more of course
on today's game as well. But I thought that was
the coolest side with Ikea Damish being in town as
part of the Steelers Podcast in Germany. Want to remind

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
