Now it's time for today's episode ofSuperman and this is the last bud
call your episode. The original airdate Januine Worry the twenty first of nineteen
fifty and this one is dead MenTell No Tales. That's stud on a
(01:07):
fitting bullet or powerful than a locomotive, A those elite tall buildings at a
single bound up on the sky.It's a bird. It's a plane that's
trouper Man. The advent yourself Superman. When the planet drypped on home of
(01:36):
a race of Superman exploder than hedoes. The sole survivor was an infant
boy who had been shut to earthin a field rocket. Today, that
boy, grown to manhood, isknown as Superman, foreign enemy of the
forces of evil. To wade himin his never ending fight for truth and
justice, he masquerades as Clark Kent, crime reporter for a great metropolitan newspaper.
His secret is carefully guarded. Noone is aware that Kent is Superman.
(01:57):
No one but you going with usNow on ABC, as Superman faces
the gravest problem of his entire career, the possible exposure of his supple identity,
and an exciting Franscraft adventure entitled deadMan Tell No Tale. The horrible
(02:22):
realization that one day someone will discoverthat Clark Kent, mild mannered, bespectacled
crime reporter is in reality Superman.Has hung over Superman's head like the sword
of Damocles, for he realizes thatonce his dual role is exposed, he
will no longer be able to workin secrecy. And now that day has
(02:42):
come. Returning to his apartment lateone night after covering a routine hold up
story at police headquarters, Clark Kentdiscovered that a secret caught it in his
bedroom had been broken into, andthe spare Superman costume he kept hidden there
had been stolen. For a moment, he was dazed, then the full
(03:05):
important what had happened struck him likea savage blow. Whoever had stolen the
costume, unless he was stupid beyondthe belief, was now aware that Clark
Kent was Superman. For almost anhour, can't taste the floor, unable
to think it. There were sixmillion people in Metropolis, and the sneak
(03:27):
thief might be any one of them. Finally, in desperation, he called
in his friend, the private detectiveCandy Myers. All right now, Clark,
relax, relax. Not the endof the world, you know,
and it might be for me.Ah, stop it, no matter what.
The guy stole a cafe. That'sbad. Let's have it from the
beginning. I told you. Igot back from headquarters at eleven o'clock.
(03:49):
I walked into the bedroom and foundthe door of the closet opened. Okay,
what was message? Well, that'snot important, Kenny, the important
be emain, It's not important.I gotta know what the guy left,
said darn, I he didn't takeanything. Well, and what's the all
a fuss? I'm still broke intomy apartment. I look palsy and not
pulling any wool over Candy Maya's eyes. In the first place, it's a
secret closet. In the second place, nobody has a secret closet and leaves
(04:13):
it empty. A third place,if the guy knew how to get it
open without jemming the door, hemust have had a pretty good idea of
what was in it. No,No, he couldn't have known what was
in it. So there was somethingin it? Yeah, well, well
what Jeff, Jeff, what dothey high now? Candy, believe me,
it doesn't matter. All I wantto do is get the seat.
(04:33):
Is that all? Well? Youknow what I mean. I don't know
what you mean, but I sureknow what you need. You neither swam
me with a crystal ball, nota detective Candy. Please, I look,
pal, you'll know as well asI do that whatever the guy took,
he's going to try and sell orhawk. The only way to put
the finger on him is to checkevery fence and hot shop in the steady.
Well, we can't do that unlesswe know what we're looking for,
(04:55):
Henry, But he won't try tosell or hawk this candy. It has
no value. Well then what areyou all hating bother the back? Well,
it has value to me, infact, it's every brother, No
candy, just do one thing forme. Well, just check the closet
door for a thinker print. Hegot your dusting kit with you? Yeah,
please, candy? Okay, butyou sure like that those things are
(05:15):
hardware. That's the only way inthis case. I wish I could tell
you more, Candy. Honestly,I do me more. Brother, You
haven't told me anything. Oh justfor fun though, Clark. Guess the
guy didn't know what was in thecloset. I mean, if he wasn't,
happen, how did he get itopen accidentally? I'm sure it's on
an electric spring and it unlocks whenyou pull out the top drawer of my
desk. Are you sure it wentto a lot of trouble I hide something
that doesn't have any value. Well, wait a minute. If what the
(05:38):
guy stock has no value, whydid he take it? I don't know,
can't you're lying in your seat. There's no skin off my back.
The prints on the door, orget him after that? Tall, you're
on your own. Hello, Yes, this is Kenny. Oh yes,

broke loose before the product car showedup. The cop chased him, shot
at him twice and swears he hithim, but he got away. Yes,

It doesn't take much remembering to rememberthe forty two thousand victims in last
(16:45):
year's record breaking polio epidemic. That'sright. The number of victims was forty
two thousand, of whom sixty percentwere children under ten years old. Thousands
of those stricken youngsters are still sick, still under treatment, still in need
of help. The help you canlend by giving to the March of Dimes.
(17:06):
The National Foundation for Instant Apparalysis caresfor every one who needs it,
carries out research stands as the greatestsingle effective block against this dread disease.
It needs your help, needs itmore desperately than ever before. This is
your responsibility, a responsibility best metby giving your dimes and your dollars.
(17:26):
Given the name of your child,Give so that more children can return to
their rolls as young, happy citizens. Give and give again to combat polio.
Keep those dimes and dollars rolling toyour local March of Dimes headquarters,
and now back till they adventures,Oh Silperman and Part two of Dead Men
(17:49):
Tell No Tales. Unaware that thetelephone call he received was from Nick Morrelly's
girl, and that both the girland the racketeer are aware of his double
identity. Dark Kent waits nervously andimpatiently for their arrivals, but Candy Myers,
suspisies of an attempted foul play, has not given up as he threatened
(18:12):
to do. Although we left Kent'sdepartment, he is now waiting outside the
entrance to the building. It isalmost three thirty in the morning, Sweet
is dark and silent. Suddenly,a car swings around the corner and moves
up in front of the building.Andy Myers stepped back into the shadow of
the doorway. None of this isthere. It is yes, no dog

That's what you said of it.So yeah, I know, but
the fright so many might come inand you said I had to be alone.
(19:03):
You've got people coming in at threethirty in the morning. Well you're
saying my business. You just can'ttell you know what it means. So

Sure I make with the talk. All you gotta do is lick. One
thing Nick Murray don't like is gettingthe double cross. You don't like it
for nothing. So if Nick Murraythinks the guy who's flipping the finger,
he's right away quick takes care ofit. See no, I'm swing the
(21:41):

Murray makes a mistake, it givesthe business to the wrong guy, the
guy who ain't slipping him no fingers. But with you, it don't matter.
If you're the guy you're supposed tobe, nothing's gonna happen. If
you ain't, then you're trying toslip money is a finger and you gotta

brilliant red and blue costume of Supermanraising a window. The only human being

on earth who numbers among his amazingpowers the power of light, leaps out
into the darkness. Hovering for atimeless moment in midair, he gets his
bearings and then, like an arrowshot from a bowl, feeds across the
city and drops down on the sidewalk in front of the Suckle House.
A forty five cart one glance andhis X ray vision shows him the scene

a matter of attempted murder. IfI'd been a split second light, that
bullet would have killed him. Sowhy did he have to try to slip
me the finger telling me he wasken? Is that's what he did?
Ask her? Yeah, he waswaking? No scares where you live?
What do you mean where I live? One sixty stands? We know the
score. Your name is Clark skin? You know too much? Could be
(24:26):
what's your name? Nick MORRELLI?And yours? Never mind? Yeah,
maybe I do know too much.Only what I know phase off does it?
I think? So what I meanis the only one know the tupid

(24:48):
kinda. If you don't, I'mgonna do a little talking and that's gonna
put you out of the superman racket. But quick, what if I see

Tell no, Taylor, you ain'tgonna knock a soft That ain't your way
Right now? I wish it wererelaxed and mister kin, but would you
like for me to score your Superman? You don't have to call me anything.
(25:08):
Where's the costume that was stolen frommy closet? I'm not in any
mood, but talking where is it? Yelling ain't gonna get you? All
right? Then maybe this well, well you're flicking my arm? Where is
that where I stuck it? Oneanswer to this, I've got to put
both of you some place where itwon't matter how much fucking you do.
(25:29):
Are you gonna act like this floor? We can make it to you.
I don't make it the shooter potdon't accept. You've made your bed and
now you're gonna sleep, and Iget your coats on. You heard what
I said, get your coats off, going or a little ride to your
new home. Now, I'm warningyou, this mountain top is four thousand
(25:55):
feet high and there's no way down. You're murdering us for freezer bay.
I'll be back with everything you needand pulling a foilo. You won't freeze
or start. Why do you throwthis spot? I saw you, I
was willing to forget it. Ieven saw you want to crush your hair,
and you're telling me it isn't worthmuch. I'll spread it on a
stack of fiber that's worth let fromyou. Oh this is how it's got
to be till I can think ofsomething else. You too, are gonna
live up here. Please please giveus a break. You're getting up break
(26:18):
I remember, don't fighter escape,I'll be back. Leaping into the still
darkened sky, Superman hovers in curiousflight above the mountain top, watching the
tiny figures of the gangster and hisgirl. Then, just as he is
about to turn in mid air andhead for Metropolis, he notices with horror
that hand in hand they are attemptingto make their way down a steep slope,
(26:38):
a stupid fool. Arching his powerfulbody, Superman prepares to swoop down
after them, but he is toolate. Loose sand and gravel rolls under
their feet, and losing their balance, they pitched forward headlong, their bodies
striking a ledge and bouncing off likesawdust stummies, falling to the valley four
thousand feeps below. Hello, Hello, this is Candy, Candy. What
(27:11):
happened to you? You sound terrible? Happened? And that he hadn't happened
to a dog? Somebody hit mein the back in her head with a
telephone, laughing, laughing, Candy, I just clearing my throat. You're
in trouble. I'm in trouble.Yeah. The name of Morelli has got
whatever was coping your quiet. Oh, don't worry about it, Candy.
(27:33):
I got it back. I gotit back. Yes. And Morelli and
the girl a diad They fell offa mountain. Oh, that does it.
I know. I should have hadmore brains than get mixed up in
it. It fell off a mountain, that's right. Sure. And I'm
thick, Tracy, And you're aSuperman. That's right, Candy. Good
night, Good night, Candy, and so and dead men tell no tales
(28:03):
on the Adventures of Superman, whichI have come to you each week at
this same time over many of theseTame ABC stations. With tonight's broadcast,
we end the current series of SupermanAdventures. Thank you for listening. We
hope to be back with you shortly, bringing you radio's most fabulous character in
thrilling stories of action, mystery andadventure. Oh be sure to listen when
(28:26):
next again you hear that familiar cryI stood on a speeding bullet, or
powerful than a locomotive able to eleastall buildings at a single bound up on
the sky. It's a bird,it's a plane, It's Cooperman. Cooperman
is a copyright Advanced Tribe feature appearingin Superman DC Comic Magazine. The role
(28:49):
of Cooperman has been played by BuddGollyer. Music has been composed and played
by John Guard Missus Jackson Beck sayinggoodbye for the present and hoping to say
hello again, and the this isABC the American Broadcasting Company, Welcome Back.
(29:14):
This episode was adapted from the radioserial The Mystery of the Stolen Costume,
and itself was actually adapted to theTV episode from series one or season
one of Superman, The Mystery ofthe Stolen Costume. It plays out almost
(29:34):
exactly on television as it did intoday's radio episode. It's a good story
in that it does expose a Supermanto some risk, which is pretty rare.
I think that moral A probably overstateshis case as to what the possible
effect of Clark kennon superman dual identitybeing revealed. It's less likely to be
(30:02):
the end of Superman than it isto be the end of Clark Kent.
In more modern versions, there's moreattachment to the Clark Kent persona. But
in this pre crisis situation, whereClark Kent has no family, no living
relatives, it's pretty easy to startover again. I remember a silver Age
(30:26):
Superman story where Superman gone amnesia andthought he was a British guy. This
was a silver Age and then hefigured out he was Superman, and then
he remembered that he was not reallythe British guy but Clark Kent. However,
he exposed his British guy identity toLois Lane, and when she discovered,
(30:52):
he said, well, I'm justgonna have to go and take another
identity. By having Candy Myers inthis situation actually creates a different dynamic than
having Batman in the original serial version, but it does work in a way.
It's a psychological pressure. You arein crisis, you want somebody to
(31:15):
help, but because it's about asecret you're trying to keep, you can't
actually tell him anything helpful. Youcan certainly understand how that would be very
frustrating for Kenny Myers. I willsay my big problem with this is that
the story really puts Superman in amoral dilemma whether to take a life or
(31:37):
to allow his identity to be revealed, potentially impacting his ability to save other
lives. He makes a choice notto kill the criminals, but is rescued
from actually having to deal with theconsequence of keeping these two permanently prisoner forever.
I'm just doing something that's really,really still it's a good classic story,
(32:02):
and that's what we end on.I should note that Bud Collyer's time
is Superman on the Radio was over, but he would come back in the
nineteen sixties to play Superman in theNew Adventures of Superman TV series, providing
the voice to Superman for sixty eightmore animated adventure add to that the Fleischer
(32:27):
and Famous Studio cartoons and more thana thousand episodes on the radio, well
more than a thousand episodes. AndCallier really was a key figure in Superman
and introducing him to generations of kids. So a wonderful legacy. And we
(32:47):
