Speaker 1 (00:00):
This looks at me on the All Sport Breakfast twenty
eight past seven. Let's ahead to National League Football heading
into another weekend, Round eight and the men's Compdale Warburton
is with us morning.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Dale. Yeah good, Hey, how are you going?
Speaker 1 (00:11):
I'm good For a while. Olympic had the bye last week,
there was a pass by Western Springs, so Olympic one
point back now in second spot, although Western Springs now
with the buy this weekend, so we'll get to the
Olympic game shortly Dale to see if they can reclaim
that lead back. Let's start off the Phraser Park this
afternoon one o'clock, the Phoenix Academy hosting Coastal Spirit.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Yeah. Bit of a battle of the bottom really, both
both teams on four points so well, Phoenix has played
one one less game compared to Coastal Spirit Chris Spirit.
They went down through one to Miramar Rangers last week
and the Colored the group Green was sent off in
the process, so he'll miss today's game as the Phoenix I. Meanwhile,
the Phoenix also lost to Spring Ulter lost last week
(00:55):
and they went down to Western Springs three one. They
went down two Oil pretty early before former Phoenix becoming
player and been well scored a third to seal that
that one. But I guess with the men's first team
on a break for the international window, they might have
a couple of fringe players this weekend to prod some
of their stocks. But you think probably the thanks will
(01:16):
be the slim favorites in that one out at Fraser Park,
all right.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
Next that Western Suburbs down the lower half of the table,
they've got the trip to christ Church for christ Church United.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
Yeah, a couple of middle table teams really are looking
like they were kind of hanging on to the leaders
for a while, but a couple of results haven't gone
quite gone their way, and then they've kind of slipped
down to the pack and their chances of making the
top tore pretty much gone, I think. And Sup as
they drew with Auckland Auckland SC last weekend they went
(01:48):
down one Noble Force, Sevestian, Button and Jerty equalized in
the second half to get a point christ each. They're
coming off a pretty sizable three and all lost there,
so we've not much to play for us. Had to
kind of pick where these will go. But the trip
down to Crush, which may make the mean that crush,
which is perhaps some favorites in that one as well.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
All Right, I need start of my rangers Dale. They
are in fourth spots and we're still a part of
that sort of leading pack and they've got Auckland City
this afternoon.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
Yeah, I think, I think realistically there's probably only four
teams left fine for the two spots, and these two
teams are the two ones on the tails of Wellington
Lovek and Western Spring. So Marimar they kept, there's some
chances alive without a three to one when last weekend
they had two goals in quick succession from Arstin Borner
midway through the second half before course of the Spirit
(02:37):
pulled one back and then Ronaldo who's scored a late
third goal to see it for three to one. It
kind of leaves in five points off the top two.
So probably need to win. I'd say the last four
games perhaps they might be able to sneak a drawer
in the somewhere. But after Auckland City they have Birkenhead,
Western Suburbs and Wellington's last games particularly challenging one. Auckland
(02:59):
City they're also with a chance. They're four points behind
thanks to a four two win over Auckland United. They
finished with Wellington Phoenix, Western Springs and Coastal Spirits are
definitely an easier run for them in that game and
probably a game that the result of us probably determine
whether they are either side. And also a couple more
(03:20):
games to go, but you think would more desperately need
a windier than perhaps a draw for Auckland.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
City indeed all right, and then to wrap up the
games featuring our Wellington team's Olympic as I said at
the start, back from there by this weekend looking to
reclaim the lead, and they've got the trip up to
Auckland f c's academy.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
Yeah, coming off by dropped down to second, but they
do have a game in hand after this one. They
have Croschich United, Auckland United and Murmur Rangers, so not
too much of a tricky run in for them if
they want to secure a top two finish Auckland that
they that draw within Suburbs. They remained down in fifth,
(04:02):
i'd say, and doing pretty well for them. They might
have a couple of teams from the first team dropped
down for them, but you'd think winning Slympics should see
should go and come back with three points.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
There, let's talk Women's National League Football now rounds eight
penultimate rounds two. Wellington United is the only Wellington team
in fourth with a mathematical chance still of reaching the
final in a fortnight. A correspondent, Hannah wignoles with us
morning to you, Hannah, and shall we start off at
a Tony memorial turf today? The Tony hosting Canterbury Units. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
So this game is a home game for Patonia, as
you've said, and it's a game they could just win
if they play their cards right. Petonia currently sitting eighth
on the ladder with six points, Canterbury just below them,
ninth in the league on four points. Platonia coming off
the back of two straight losses. In round six they
lost three nil to Auckland United. In round seven are
(04:54):
whopping seven nil loss to United. Those that were at
that game have told me the scoreline doesn't completely present
an accurate picture of the game, but I've been there
and a loss is a loss and it will have stung.
United got two goals past them in the first six minutes.
Canterbury are in a similar but slightly less confident position
(05:14):
to Paterny. They're coming off the back of four straight losses,
including an eight to one loss to United and a
five or Wellington United sorry and a five mil loss
to West Coast Rangers. Patoni will be pleased to have
gotten a couple of results out of their time in
the National League, but they really will want to finish
on a high. Canterbury is a team they can and
(05:37):
will be determined to beat. Getting a win against them
could mean a leap frog past the Phoenix Reserves and
which means they could and the league ahead of the
Phoenix And what a great brid of local rivalry and
some think I'm sure a lot of local football fans
would love to see. Next week Patoni have Eastern Subburbs
(05:57):
who are currently second in the league, so it will
be a really tough game for them. So this is
their week to pull out all the.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
Stops, all right, and hopefully they do that to thirty
this afternoon Wellington Units. They're in action at three up
the roads in Palmerston North against Central. They've got some
good goal scoring form on these last couple of week ends.
Hannah and yeah, as we mentioned, a push for the
finals still within reach.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
Oh totally. I mean, you know, a commanding seven zerl
win against Patoni last week and an equally impressive win
against Canterbury eight to one. And I think what's more
impressive is that United they had five different players on
the scoreboard against both Canterbury and p Tony, so you know,
the depth in that squad is really impressive. Last week
(06:43):
you interviewed Sarah Elder, who's now reached two hundred games
for the club. So it's kind of like they've got variety.
They've got a number of attacking players, but they've also
got an incredible amount of depth. I said at the
beginning that you know, United are finding their feet in
this league and they started out slow, but they've really
(07:04):
have built up a little bit of momentum. They're currently
fourth in the league on thirteen points. Sitting alongside them
is Southern United, also on thirteen points. United just have
a better goal difference. There are two points behind West
Coast Rangers who are in third. So it will be
an exciting end of the season campaign for United as
(07:26):
there could be a bit of movement at the top
where yeah, it is a slim chance for them that
they could make the top two and the Grand Final. However,
it is slim the two teams above them three teams
above them, but Eastern Suburbs and West Coast Rangers play
(07:47):
each other this weekend, and so a result in the
favor of the third place team would be good for United.
But we know that any chance of United getting in
the top two relies on Potni beating Eastern Stubburbs in
the final round, which I think is a a slim chance.
(08:11):
I will say that Central are a team that you know,
have not won a game this season, and they also
haven't scored a goal this season, so it's going to
be really tough for them showing up this week against United.
And I've been there. I've been part of a team
that's experienced a lot of losing streaks. But it is
(08:32):
possible to take small wins and improve, and so, you know,
having a revised attitude and a full squad. I'm not
sure if they will have a full squad against United,
but if they do, you know, they could break the
game down into chunks and hold United out. But I
expect United could reach double digits against Central this.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
Week, all right, Yeah, fifteen goals in two games. We'll
see where it goes this afternoon and then wrapping up
the round tomorrow. As you mentioned, Hannah, a bit of
an interesting battle for the Phoenix life. So coul to
get to Brownie points and they've got Western Springs at
home tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
Yeah, totally welcome to Lower Hut Western Springs. They Western
Springs sit six on the table, two points above the
Phoenix Reserves who sit seventh on seven points. I don't
think the Phoenix will be completely happy with their season,
pulling off just two wins and a draw this season,
(09:24):
so this is really a must win game for them.
They won't want to want to finish the season as
the lowest ranked Wellington team and they know Brittny is
hot on their heels. The last two weeks Phoenix have
had a win and a loss six mier win against
Central and a six to one loss against Eastern Suburbs.
And what we've seen in this league is the incredibly
(09:46):
high standard of Auckland teams. They're setting the bar really
high for women's football in this country and teams outside
of Auckland are really struggled to gainst get results against
them this season. And whilst Western Springs is the lowest
ranked of the Auckland clubs, they still have an impressive
depth to their squad and their experience of playing week
in week out in the Auckland leagues shows and it
(10:10):
shows in their positive goal difference in this league. So
if teams get a result off Western Springs, it does
not come lightly. The Phoenix will know this and they'll
need to be really strategic as they enter this game.
It might be that they just get a handful of
chances to put the ball in the back of the net,
so they will need to be incredibly clinical. I think
(10:31):
this is yeah, this is a chance for Phoenix to
get get a result in round nine. They've got West
Coast Rangers who are sitting third in the league, so
it will be a really tough game for them to
finish on next week.
Speaker 1 (10:43):
All right, well interesting for many reasons for those few
games featuring our local teams. We we'll scan some of
those results through the weekend. Hannah, thanks as always, and
we might add final rounds with you next week. Let's
do it for more from News Talks, there'd be listen
live on air or online and keep our shows with
you wherever you go with our podcasts on iHeartRadio.
