Peter Giles has been involved with the now well-known Kabori kids, Momoka and Kazuma, as the pro at the Rangiora Golf Club for many years.

Still heavily involved in the game as a professional, coach, and tour player, Peter shared some of his story with Craig Kerr in association with the Elmwood Trading Company.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Then now persists as paid off and we've managed to
track down Peter Joels get I, Peter, how are you good?

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Great? Thank you good? Very good.

Speaker 1 (00:07):
Yeah, that's good. Hey, look, sorry to sort of have
been a bit of struggle get holder this morning. But
tell us a bit about yourself. Originally from Southend, you've
come to christ Church and you're off to Nelson.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Yes, yeah, originally from the Cargo and sort of born
and bred there and moved to back in the day.
Moved to Nelson in nineteen eighty seven to take over
Nelson Golf Clubs as assistant golf probe. Then back then
with a guy called Ken Allen.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
And you've been what you've been down here, You've been
at the rung. You're a golf club and I guess, gee,
we know of a couple of famous people out of there,
Momocha and Kazuma Kabori. Did you have a much to
do with them in the younger days.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
Peter, Yeah, they turned up I think both nine and eleven,
and we spent about six years with those kids. It's
just such brilliant kids. They started off pretty raw and
obviously just work really hard on their games, on their games,
so practiced every day and with a bit of sort

(01:13):
of guidance with getting the right principles in place, you know,
just the basics grip and posture and lighting up and
playing a bit with them. They have gone to where
they are. They're they're very world class, was world class
golfers now and both playing on their respective tours. Mimocha's

(01:36):
tenth on the Order Emerit at the moment and the
Ladies European Tour, and obviously Kazuma's been going great gun.
So I'm pretty pretty proud of them and nice to
be associated and get them started playing.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
Absolutely. How long have you been a professional golfer for.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Peter, I turned pro in nineteen eighty seven, so that's
quite a few years ago. Yeah, quite a few years ago.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
In your time here in Canterbury, has there been anything
sort of really stand out in terms of a major
change in the way that the game of golfers has
played or properly so much play, but certainly managed and
and and the course management and the different courses have
been popping up around the place.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
Yeah. I think Canterbury is very lucky. Obviously, it has
a huge range of very good golf courses and has
it changed? I think, I think the players and you know,
when you do go and play with some of these
kids now they hit it an extremely long way, and
you know with with that, they seem to be more

(02:44):
dedicated and more more, more work goes in. But in general,
really just golf of the golf and when you have
that upper level of golfers, they've the ball goes a
long way now and some kids that are an awful
long way.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
So yeah, now what lies ed for you, Peter, Well,
I'm going to say that golf will always be a
part of your life.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Yes, I still love competing and I love playing with
the boys on Wednesdays out at regular and and you
know the competing part for me, even though I'm now
fifty six, I still have the opportunity I play on
the Australasian Senior Tour, play sort of fifteen events on
that they come over to New Zealand and and compete

(03:35):
with those guys, So that that's a part that I
will still continue. I still love playing with maybe the
flat bellies as we call them, the under fifties and
the young kids because I can still compete to a point.
So you know, it's part of part of me playing

(03:56):
golf and played golf for a number of years. Still
love complaining correct, good on you play that look.

Speaker 1 (04:04):
Sorry to have to cut it short, but we do.
