Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the all Sport Breakfast and we are going
to be talking golf now in association with the Elmut
Trading Company. Were welcome to the program. Peter McDonald, j Peter,
how are you?

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Good morning? Craig, here are you this morning?

Speaker 1 (00:11):
I'm very well, thank you. The twenty twenty four edition
of the historic Woodward Cup competition gets underway today. What
can we expect? What are you looking forward to as
the convener of the well, what's your royal sort of
the convener of the competition? I would say, Peter, would you?

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Yeah, lookio to see all the end club competitions. Look
at with the Grave and golf. We've got a lot
of people wanting to play in the club golf. We've
got three hundred people or golfers playing each Sunday in
the club. So it's great. And we're about to kick
off the Woodward Cup competition. That's our premiere competition, been

(00:46):
going since nineteen thirty eight, so it's a well established
competition and that's always keenly forought. So that's about to
start at Pegasus Golf Club tomorrow. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (00:57):
Look, it's as you say, it's so keenly fought and
a lot of changes throughout the throughout the off season,
players changing clubs and what have you. So the defending
champions are the Christitch Golf Club and do they do
they play first? They play Timbleton? Well no, they play Pegass,
don't they?

Speaker 2 (01:16):
Yeahs, stud So have've got a tough tough job playing
Pegasus on their home course, and certainly quite the christ
Church team is very similar to last year the other
defending champions, and they will be one of the favorites
to win the competition, but playing Pegasus on the home track,

(01:36):
that's going to be a tough one for them first up.

Speaker 1 (01:39):
So how does it work, Peter? So each club that's
represented in the Woodward Cup they get a home game
throughout the throughout the competition. As there it works.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Are there's some stage that we we have nine rounds
of round robin and generally we're playing on most of
the courses, but when as we get into the days
where the daylight is allowing us to play two rounds,
we end up on there some clubs that don't get
the opportunity to play on their home course. But so
they've got nine rounds around robin over the August to

(02:12):
October key thing for the clubs is to try and
make these top four for the playoffs and we have
our finals in November.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
Just looking through the press release that come out, I
mean some top players involved in this competition, they read Hilton,
Tom Leake, Tim Leonard, Cooper Moore, Oscar Kaine here g
was some household names really in the sport of golf
here in Cannery.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
Absolutely. I mean this would be sent me in the
South Island, the premiere in the club competition. We have
a lot of people that want to play in this
competition and as say it started, there's a number of
people that have come into christ Church from outside the
area for work and they are joining up golf clubs

(03:00):
and it's some really exciting players here. Certainly the likes
of Cooper Moore, who's a real star, is one of
the key players here. I mean his recent form over
and it was represented New Zealand went to a tournament
in Scotland r and a junior tournament and end up
coming second. So outstanding performance by young Cooper.

Speaker 1 (03:22):
So to play in the Woodward Cup four a club
safe for tem Woodon for example, you have to belong
to that club. You can't just be bought in as
a designate hitter, I guess, and if you want to
term it in softball terms, for the competition, you have
to be a member of that club, is that correct?

Speaker 2 (03:36):
That's correct, yes, And you have to be a resident
that lives in Canterbury and the people that are playing
in wood Cup all live and work in the Canterbury
region and so that's a key requirement in as far
as playing in our competition.

Speaker 1 (03:50):
Okay, right, oh Peter, Well let's go through the draw
and you just give me who you think might win it.
So the round one is at Pegas is tomorrow. We
talked about the Christi's peak, Vegas is on their home track.
You like the chances there.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
I think it'd be very close. I think it could
even be an upset there. They've got young Yuki Meyer
who's the probably the number one player out there, and
plus a number of people, and say always starting off
it with having your home course advance does provide a
bit of an advantage for them, but a lot of
these guys have played these courses as well, so I
wouldn't be surprised if that goes right down to the

(04:27):
wire and it's very close. But the christ Ytch team
is certainly would as a strong team.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
Well, Mary Beach. They played Timbilton well I made Beach.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
Won the promotion relegation, so they haven't played in the
Wood Cup competition for a number of years and so
they have won the right to move up to Woodwold Cup.
They're playing Templeton. That'll be a tough ass Templeton have
we runner up last year and won the Woodwood and
the twenty one twenty two years, so they'll be a

(05:03):
tough ass for them. But it's great to see why
Murray Beach come into the competition. They're doing a lot
of good work in their club with their junior programs,
so we expect to see some good things coming out
out of one Mary Beach.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
One of my favorite clubs around Canary is Whedons that
they play clear Water.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
Yeah, well Whedon, I think it'll be tough one for
Weedon's clear Water one of the favorites as well. I
mean they've got lots of Cooper Moore who mentioned, They've
got Sam McGill, they've got Oscar Cadenhead who was a
professional's now back in amateur ranks, along with a new
guy to the area, Brody Ferguson. I don't know too
much about him, but he has been a representative for Taranaki.

(05:43):
So well, the selectors be keen to see how he
goes and we'll you know, it'll be it'll be a
tough one for Whedons, to be clear. Well, that's for sure.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
Russelly always bring something to the table. They take on
bottom Lake.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
Yes, this is this will be a very interesting game
as well. Russeley, where I suppose we get disappointed with
their performance last year. They missed out on the playoffs
and normally they are one of the key clubs to
feature in the playoffs. So they've had a bit of
a shake up and they are looking to sort of
address the performance last year. They've had a couple of

(06:24):
new guys come to the club. Can we representive Mike
Toki who came from Templeton And we've also had the
Russell They've had Adam Winter who is a Waikato rep
who's now working in christ Church. He's joined his brother
Luke Winter. So we've got a couple of new guys

(06:45):
that have come to Russeley Golf Club and yes, so
it'll be interesting to see how they go. I'd probably
think that Russelly might just sort of edgy out bottle
Ack in that game, that's for sure.

Speaker 1 (06:57):
And the final game between what a kiddy and he
would both I guess traditionally strong clubs, aren't they. That'll
be pretty close to I'd imagine.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
Yes, it will be named. They have always been knocking
on the door of making the playoffs, so both That
game could go either way. Here we made the playoffs
last year, so are they there? Team looks like it's
going to be regionally similar, so i'd e speak probably
he would each yet way to carry on that one.

Speaker 1 (07:28):
Good on you, Peter. We do appreciate your time here
on the All Sport Breakfast talking golf and of course
the Woodward Cupies. You say it's been around for a
long time since nineteen thirty eight, I think it was. Yes,
it is and always hotly contested and keenly contested competition
amongst the golf clubs here in Canery. We look forward
to following the progress of all the clubs over the
next few weeks. Is this competition now gets wound up

(07:52):
and the players get stuck into it. Appreciate your time.
